My daughter wants all the books now!.......2007-07-08
My daughter is 9 and has Asperger's syndrome, or high functioning autism. She collects feathers, and the weather is one of her IMPORTANT subjects. She reads fast, and finished this book quickly.... and informed me that she needs to read the rest of them so could I please help her get them right away? The story itself is a little intense because the goblin is actually trying to hit Storm and girls with lightning, but of course it all comes out okay in the end. We will definitely read the other books in the series!
Got My Daughter Interested in Reading Again.......2007-05-07
We've been struggling for a way to get my daughter to read now that she's run out of Junie B. Jones books. The Weather Fairies books have done the trick. She seems to enjoy reading again for the first time in half a year or more.
I have to say I haven't read any of the Weather Fairies myself but I caught my twelve-year-old son reading the series because his sister had obviously liked it. He said he wanted to read more, too.
We love the Rainbow Magic series.......2007-02-06
My soon-to-be 5 year old daughter and I LOVE this series. The stories are simple enough and short enough (about 40 min) to hold her attention as a read aloud, and there are enough illustrations peppered throughout to give her something to look at as I read. Both the stories and the illustrations are delightful. These books have ignited a passion for reading in my daughter, and she is now extremely motivated to read on her own so she doesn't have to wait for me to read them to her. We can hardly wait for the rest of the series to be published in the US. There are also the Jewel Fairies, the Pet Fairies, and the Party Fun Fairies that are only available in the UK right now, but it looks like some of them will be published here this summer. You can be sure we will be pre-ordering them!
We love it!!.......2006-12-23
My seven-year old daughter Clare has read 12 books by Daisy Meadows and we've ordered several more. She especially liked Crystal the Snow Fairy. It has great pictures. Some of her other favorites include: Pearl the Cloud Fairy and Heather the Violet Fairy. What a great series!
Doodle's magic feathers lost!.......2006-10-13
I love this book! I would recommend this book for ages 5 and up. In this book Jack Frost's evil goblins stole Doodle's, the rooster who gives the weather faries their weather feathers so they can control the weather in FairyLand, tail feathers which are the weather feathers! Kirsty and Rachel are best friends, who are friends with the fairies so they can help! Their first mission is in this book when they have to find Crystal the snow fairies weather feather. Read this book to find out more!

Book Description
Inside you is the power to do anything
Meet Beth, who's just discovered something incredible she is a fairy, a marigold fairy, to be exact.
But Beth must learn to be a fairy during an emergency! The Feather of Hope has been lost and Beth must enlist the aid of her dog, Peanut, in a daring mission to rescue it from a house occupied by dangerous gremlins. And if Beth, her new fairy friends and Peanut can't get the Feather back, all hope will be lost forever.
What if you discovered you had magical fairy powers? Meet the girls of The Fairy Chronicles, otherwise normal girls like you who are blessed by Mother Nature with special gifts. Their extraordinary adventures will change the world!
Magic surrounds us, though we can't always see it. Gnomes add color to the plants in our gardens, doves deliver our good dreams, gremlins occasionally break our things and Mother Nature keeps the balance between the light and the dark. But just because you can't see something doesn't mean it can't hurt you.
Luckily, Mother Nature has blessed some otherwise ordinary girls with an extraordinary gift: in addition to being girls, they have been granted a fairy spirit, each one as unique and beautiful as the girls themselves, each as wild and powerful as their counterparts in nature. Watch Dragonfly zoom by with the speed of her namesake, or witness Firefly use the incredible light that shines within her. Each fairy spirit is a powerful gift granting the girls who use them the ability to do amazing feats. But with power comes responsibility and the fairies might have the hardest of job of all: to protect Mother Nature and us, even though we didn't even know they existed. Until now

Not Your Grandmother's Fairytale.......2007-10-12
This is a wonderful fairytale, but definitely not the ones your grandmother and mother read to you. It has morals and lessons built into it, but it is nothing like Snow White or Pinocchio, and the fairies do not particularly resemble Tinkerbell. They are fairly modern girls, taking on the responsibility of protecting nature and fixing problems, but in a most delightful and fairy-like way. Enchanting story, but not like the fairytales of old. This is a nice new version of fairies and other magical beings. However, it reminds me of books I read growing up because the children like to climb trees and draw, instead of playing on a computer. A friend tuned me in to this book saying, It's really charming. I agree and I think any person who ever enjoyed fairytales will like this story. I am getting a copy of this for my niece who particularly likes fairies.
A New Fairy Series.......2007-07-22
This reshapes the world of fairies and that's wonderful because the story is so interesting and fun. These are fairies living among us secretly as human beings, and the fairies do important things. When arguing with my daughter about chores, she told me, "I am very busy. For all you know I might be a fairy, which means I need time to do my important fairy business." In this first story we are introduced to the fairies and one (Marigold) who is discovering that she is a fairy. The girls set out on a mission to help the brownies get the Feather of Hope back. The gremlins are cute, along with Beth's dachshund who helps with the mission. This is a good children's book that even adults will enjoy as light/quick reading.
Great, even for Non-Fairy Types.......2007-06-16
I wasn't sure what to make of these books in the Fairy Chronicles series. I know that some girls love princesses and fairies and unicorns, but I don't think that my eight-year-old daughter and I are in that camp. We were both hooked in the first chapter, because this is not just a story about a feminine mythical creature. It's an adventure story. It's also a story of self-discovery. Every two to three pages are illustrated with really beautiful pen and ink drawings by Tara Larsen Chang, which makes the book even more captivating. The story could be enjoyed by girls age six or seven on up to ten, at least. The print is big (like an early reader), but the vocabulary is fairly complex (My third grade daughter could easily understand, but there were a few unfamiliar words). It makes for a nice combination that is not too intimidating to read, and yet will challenge a girl while she's reading it (sort of like when Kindergarteners have so much fun that the don't realize that they are learning). This also makes it a great read-aloud, because you can stop and talk about the new words. Each book is about 100 pages, which I have found is a nice length for a book that we are going to read together before bed, because we are able to finish the book within a week and not get too weary of it. It's also just the right length for a slower or more reluctant independent reader to be able to tackle on her own.
Beth is a [...] girl who is going to spend part of the summer with her quirky aunt. What Beth doesn't know is that her aunt has something special in mind for this particular visit. She's going to tell Beth something about herself that she doesn't know: she is also a fairy named Marigold. As a fairy, Beth learns to fly, to use her wand, and even helps ward off the evil activities of some gremlins, while exploring her new found relationships with other young girls who also happen to be fairies.
This first book sets up the storyline, so there is less action and adventure, but we've also read the second book and found it to be more exciting in that respect.
Interesting Storyline and Should Be Collectible.......2007-06-13
I say should because this book contains a terrific story with colorful illustrations. But the book is paperback. I can't find a hardback version. There is an "unavailable" earlier paperback edition but no hardback one. As captivating and interesting as this story is and as beautiful as the illustrations are, this should be a collectible book - but I don't know many people who "collect" paperbacks. This should be presented like Barker's Flower Fairies in hardback storybooks and on coffee mugs and calendars. This series is more complex than the Rainbow and Weather Fairies series. The stories are more along the lines of Fairy Realm, also a good series for young girls. This is a challenging book for early chapter readers and a terrific story but I would wish for a collectible hardback book for the long term especially since this will be much handled by many young readers.
Fairies, Magic and Hope.......2007-05-21
It is time to introduce you to the Fairy Team: Marigold, Dragonfly, Thistle and Firefly. Perhaps it is possible that they are the ones that magically fixed the lamp you thought was once broken, or perhaps that dragonfly you saw buzzing around yesterday was actually a fairy in disguise. In this magical fairy-filled world, anything from a young girl's imagination materializes in the magic of The Fairy Chronicles' first book of the series, Marigold and the Feather of Hope, the Journey Begins.
Young Beth Parish is starting her summer off in the most boring way possible - two weeks with her oddly strange aunt. As a nine year old, there is nothing else worse in the world than having to spend a half month with someone that is far from ordinary. However, no sooner than a can of root beer later, Beth learns that not only is her aunt a fairy, but she is too - a Marigold fairy, to be precise! It is at this instant that the young (and old) reader is pulled into the magical fairy world of writer and creator J.H. Sweet.
There are more than just fairies in this magical world. Garden gnomes, brownies and even nasty gremlins could be lurking around any house and garden on the block. Never fear, the fairies rescue the day when they defeat the nasty little gremlins wreaking havoc upon Mr. Forrester, just in time for the brownies to recover the Feather of Hope. This magical team effort is rounded out by the help of Beth's dachshund - the one creature gremlins are afraid of!
The Fairy Chronicles are more than just a magical ride through a mythical world, but also teach valuable life lessons while entertaining the senses. Learning to appreciate nature and the colors of the natural world is a great lesson to be learned in the midst of "Climate Change" and other scary, bewildering thoughts of the future. "Leave only footprints" is an idealistic thought for how all creatures (fairies and non-fairies) should treat the Earth. Also, while awaiting the rescue of the Feather of Hope, we see that Mr. Forrester believes that there are "two important things to consider" in our search for the meaning of life. "How we treat other people, and what we teach to children," are actual lessons demonstrated in Marigold and the Feather of Hope, the Journey Begins.
Another beneficial lesson weaved into this magical book includes knowing the importance of community as we see the how the fairies work together to solve problems with each other to benefit each other. The reader learns alongside Marigold on becoming an educated fairy and how fairies value honesty and virtue. Between the magic and the lessons, this book is a wonderful choice for young, impressionable readers with wild and ambitious imaginations.
In addition to being a very easy read, geared towards children ages seven and up, with colorful and imaginative illustrations by Tara Larsen Chang, it makes an excellent bedtime book to be read a chapter or two at a time. Magically fun adventures are on the horizon for Marigold, her aunt, the Fairy Team and others from the Fairy Circle. You and your child will both enjoy the adventures yet to come to the lovable fairies in J.H. Sweet's magical fairy world!

New Orleans greets Thais with many secrets and mysteries, but none as unbelievable as the moment she comes face to face with the impossible an identical twin, Clio.Thais soon learns that she and the twin she never knew come from a family of witches, that she possesses astonishing powers, and that she, along with Clio, has a key role in Balefire, the coven she was born into. Fiery Clio is less than thrilled to have to share the spotlight, but the twins must learn to combine their powers in order to complete a rite that will transform their lives and the coven forever.
Customer Reviews:
Plots of the Trieze.......2006-06-29
Clio and Thais, identical twins who only just discovered each other, are at the center of numerous plots by the group of immortal witches known as the Trieze. Each twin has her own views about what the reworking of the great spell might mean but they are both against the idea of being used by the other witches. As the time for the reenactment approaches, the twins uncover a lot of secrets both together and separately. They even find out who is behind some of the attempts on their lives.
As the twins are trying to deal with the enormity of the Trieze and what it represents, we get a lot of chapters from the viewpoints of the other witches. In this way we learn a lot about what they are really up to. We also see the arrival of the final summoned members.
Like the earlier books, viewpoints change with each chapter. Fewer of the chapters are from Clio and Thais's viewpoints. Also, at the end there is not the same need to see what happens next. There are a few unanswered questions at the end but nothing like in the previous volumes. It is almost as if the story peaked one book too soon. Still, it is as good as the first two. Check it out.
They just keep getting better and BETTER!.......2006-04-06
Cate Tiernan is such a fantastic author! I love all of her books and this specific one did not let me down. It starts where the last one left off and the drama and mystery continues. I love this series so much and hope that it continues!!
Something is going on with Clio..............2006-01-07
This book series just gets better and better. Clio is dealing with some things and Thais is still fighting her feelings that she has toward Luc. Not only that, one of them may be the dark twin and if so who? I highly recommend this book and can't wait till the fourth.
Suspenseful and entertaining!.......2005-11-17
This is the third book in the Balefire series by Cate Tiernan, and the best so far. Maybe that's not true. All three are the best!
Someone is still going after Clio and Thais and trying to kill them. They work a little spell to find out who, and it works, while almost killing themselves. It's a shocker when you find out who's behind all the madness, and even more of a shocker when you find out who is connected to the twins.
I can't wait to read the final book in the series which comes out next year!
Way 2 Long a wait..........2005-11-11
I Love this series, someone might kill me for this but i like it more then Sweep, you won't believe the crazy stuff that happens to thais and clio this time around, mostly clio though. There was a huge twist in the book, that was painful for me but probably joyful for others,i can't believe who the person who tried to kill them was... but i guess youv'e got to read it to find out. Lets just say this book was worth wait, but it's going to be agonizing to wait until March for the next installment :(

Customer Reviews:
Featherfin, an excellent children's book........1997-11-13
Featherfin is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. Both of my children were absolutely captivated by the story of this peacock eel. Not only were they entertained by the story but, in the course of the story, learned a lesson in the merits of listening to parental advice. I highly recommend this and the rest of Mr. Cosgrove's books as well. They are a worthy addition to any child's library.
Customer Reviews:
Loved the strength and beauty........2002-09-15
I really loved this book, I felt it had a lot to offer as a modern take on ancient traditions. The feminist message was refreshing and really made me feel strengthened and heartened. I liked her prayers for strength in mind and body, as well as her discussion of a woman's different stages in life as it relates to various northern Goddesses. I just like this author a lot - I also have her Moon Magick and it's written in much the same way as this book - a lot of prayers, light history, rituals and thoughts organized in segments. This one also has simple drawings which I really enjoyed and felt were powerful for some reason. I think it's the simplicity and unpretentious flow of her thoughts that I like so much. It's an action book, and a book for thinking about your own path to strength.
As a young woman who lives in a conservative rural area, I found her words to be uplifting and empowering. I see and hear a lot of prejudice and negativity directed towards women here (as well as in mainstream culture) and her prayers and rituals make me feel less alone. I wish more authors would write feminist takes on wicca and magick - they make me feel strong when I'm feeling discouraged.
I wouldn't reccommend this book to people who are looking for important works on runes or any in depth witchcraft, though it does touch on those subjects lightly. I reccommend it more for women who are looking to take action about their own paths through introspection and ritual. I think with your own imagination, you could take her ideas and run with them, creating for yourself deeper reflections on her already interesting ideas. All in all, I think this book helped me to be a stronger, and more honorable woman - so I appreciate this book a lot.
Almost too awful for words.......2000-08-01
In all my years of studying Norse Paganism and Shamanism I have never found anything so pitiful as this book. Norse lore and practices are conspicuous by their absence. The shamanic content is non-existent and her "knowledge" of the runes is total New Age clap-trap.
Volumes and volumes of information on the Norse traditions, including seidr, are available but she can't even stick with the subject for half a book. Since when are crystals, chakras and psuedo-feminist whining part of Norse traditions? What's with all the Californian psycho-babble?
Those looking for genuine information on Norse traditions would do far better looking for works by Freya Aswynn and Edred Thorson rather than this fluff-bunny bilge.
Of Differing Opinion.......1999-09-28
I actually enjoyed this book and did not find it overly feminist at all. I grew up reading feminist literature that make this book look tame. DJ Conway did a wonderful job presenting the feminine side of Shamanism and Nordic tradition.
Angry Feminist Revisionist History.......1999-04-05
This book was quite disappointing. It is a mish-mash of revisionist "wymyn's" herstory and feminist polemic ... with the occasional reference to pagan practices thrown in ... all of which are carefully crafted to exclude male practitioners. I was hoping to find information that would empower me as a woman, instead, I find myself wondering why I turned to this book rather than heeding my own inner strength.
Bad Norse Dianic wicca with a pronounced female chauvenist........1998-09-19
Incredibly disappointing work by DJ Conway, who normally can actually write. The bias in this book was so bad that I literally threw it across the room several times while reading it. Coming from someone who can easily stomach Z. Budapest and the ecofeminists, thats saying a lot. I was hoping to learn something about shamanism and spirtual growth from a woman's perspective. Instead, I got a hodgepodge of bad wymyn's hystory (owing entirely too much to The Chalice & the Blade) some divination techniques, some very odd meditations and a lot of anti-male propaganda. Despite the fact that she wrote another book on different belief systems, her knowledge of belief systems as used in this book is pitiful. Where is the woman who wrote _Moon Magick_? The writing was also disjointed and there were sections where it almost appeared that the polemics had been inserted after the text.

A Colorful and Pleasing Tale!.......2007-01-17
This is our fourth encounter with the Legends of the World Series and we thoroughly enjoyed it!! This volume finds us in Jamaica, spending time with Solidae, her Gran'mother, living a simple but fulfilling life gather the fruits of the forest and sea. As the story starts out, Solidae comes to her Gran and tells her that the once colorful fish are now brown and drab as the mud...all the color is gone. Gran'mother knows immediately that it is Mancrow and begins to tell Solidae his story, the only creature among man and beast who never chose one nature over the other and who had slunk away into the forest, with this dark and savage heart. With that Gran leaves for the village for a few days and advises Solidae to stay away from Mancrow and not to speak to him at all.
Naturally, she does have an encounter with him and Iguana loses his colors as a result and Mancrow steals all the light and color from the world in his anger...Solidae goes home, but eventually Gran'mother returns and she confesses her part in the lasting darkness and decides that she must track down Mancrow and pluck his colored feather to set things right again. In the end, The Magic Feather is an interesting look at this folk story and we all enjoyed reading how Solidae worked with all the other animals in the end to pluck Mancrow's magic feather and bring back light and color to their island. The kids also picked up that storms must be something people living on Jamaica were worried about, and that's why they had the story to explain why storms happen and how Mancrow might one day return.
What I like about this series is that the language is simple and straightforward, even if the point is a bit sometimes ambiguous...and the illustrations are a riot of color...or a totally bleak landscape devoid of color and life, giving the story a rich and vibrant feel! We enjoyed this tale and I would recommend this book without hesitation!
Overall, I think this series is a great basic introduction to a wide array of stories from many cultures the world over...a jumping off point also for kids to research more into the culture and mythology, legend and/or folklore of any given place. I'd recommend this for introducing young children to mythology and folklore. The age range cited is 9-12 which is probably the range of kids who would most appreciate and benefit from the story and additional information provided...but even younger kids (say 5-8) will love the stories and vivid, colorful illustrations...the stores aren't so complex or long that they will lose interest in them. I would definitely buy this for my permanent collection and hope to read more from this series soon! I give it a solid A...kids of all ages can enjoy this tale!

Let the feather be your guide.......2007-05-15
Jacob and the Magic Feather is a wonderful fantasy/adventure that any child will enjoy and identify with. A young boy happily makes his way through the mountains of New Hampshire prepared for a day's outing -- but not for the many chance encounters that he overcomes. This is an ideal book to inspire a love of the outdoors while building curiousity and confidence in children.
The illustrations are extremely unusual in their style. They do a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the colorful outdoors and the spirit of adventure.

Book Description
Five Golden Feathers is a story about the fears and dreams of eleven-year-old orphan boy, JOSH (JOSHUA) TAYLOR. JOSH lives with his only relative, Great, Great Aunt Belle Taylor, who's almost a hundred. He fears she'll die then he'll have no family. His dream is to go on an adventure like his great, great grandfather, Old Timothy Taylor had when he was just sixteen-years-old...where there will be fun instead of sadness.Aunt Belle reads to JOSH many times from Old Timothy's diary about his travels on foot from his home in Virginia to find land and build a home in California. JOSH loves to hear about Old Timothy's visit to the Hopi Mesas in the 1890s, especially the magical powers of the Hopi Kachina doll an old Hopi man made for him...and how if anyone tampered with that Kachina doll something weird would happen. Every time JOSH looks up at the shelf in the hall and sees the Kachina doll's golden feathers glistening in the sun...he wonders what weird thing could happen after all these years?
But when he whisks the doll off to his attic room, something weird does happen. JOSH and the ghost of his great, great grandfather, Old Timothy are zapped back in time over a hundred years.
Then the magic from five golden feathers imprisons Josh in the body of a Hopi Indian boy.

A Fantastic Children's Book!.......2006-11-21
This was not only a great story, but an educational one as well. It teaches you all about the Hopi culture - how they lived, dressed, what they ate, and how they celebrated their holidays. It's a much more interesting way to learn than through a textbook. Magic from a Kachina doll and time-travel bring the reader to a mysterious time and place, which helps Josh Taylor learn about his great great grandfather Old Timothy Taylor.
