Book Description
A book to help women understand the biomechanics of the entire maternity cycle and the rationale for and against certain exercises. Noble shows how to recognize and remedy weakness and dysfunction that often plagues the average, sedentary woman during her childbearing year. As well as chapters explaining role of the key muscles (abdominal and pelvic floor) during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum, there are chapters on the principles of exercise, posture, comfort, bed rest, and Cesarean rehabilitation. Hands-on techniques for relieving some of the common joint discomforts are listed in the appendix and there are summary tear-sheets at the back of the bookfor the prenatal, postpartum and Cesarean recovery programs.

essentail exercises for the childbearing years.......2007-10-12
the book is a good book althought i was a little disappointed becasue there were about 6 pages that didn't print good and the material printed half on one page and the rest on the other page. aside from that the book it's is very usefull.
Must Have .......2007-01-11
This book educates women about important exercises during pregnancy and post partem that will give them a new perspective on how their bodies work. In fact, imparting the exercises throughout life from now on would benefit every woman immensely.
Worth the time to read.......2006-04-29
After reading some of the negative reviews, I felt compelled to write my own. In my first pregnancy, I did find the book hard to follow in some places (and yes it could be organized better), and I did not use it. Now in my second preganacy, and in hindsight I greatly regret not taking the time to actually read it and use it. I have searched for other books, and have found some that seem better organized, however, all of the other books seem based on MS Noble's but less complete, and do not really promote exercises which will not increase pelvic floor problems. This book is designed to protect the pelvic floor, and repair it (instead of surgery). So no, do not expect to break a sweat or find and intense work out (of which high body temp is bady for baby's brain anyway). If you are looking for something with a 5 second simple sound byte for instructions, this is not the book for you. Such as in life, some of the really good things require thorough explanantion and a bit of your time. Ms. Noble's book was one of the first like it, is still the base reference for most others, and will truly teach you how to protect your abdomen and pelvic floor safely. Unlike some other books, which have exercises that will actually increase abdominal recti seams. So, if after pregancny you do not want a saggy abdomen, a uterus hanging down, and not to pee when you sneeze- this is the book for you.
Essential Exercises For The Childbearing Year.......2006-02-07
I wish that I had found and read this book before both of my pregnancies, especially since I now have a severe uterine prolapse shortly after my second! (I never even knew this could happen in someone my age- 36!) I will now try to repair some of the damage pregnancy and delivery has wrought on my body by using the exercises in this book, and fully recommend other women do the same to avoid the awful problems I am having!
Probably not for women who are already exercisers.......2002-08-31
Although this book has some really interesting points on abdominal exercises (although the other reviewers are right about the poor organization; and, there are typos and visually the pages are very cluttered), it absolutely does not offer an overall fitness program. It's much more like a physical therapy program focussed on abs and pelvic floor. So, if what you're looking for is supplemental exercises to add, it may be fine for you, but I'm going back to the drawing board to find a more all-purpose pregnancy exercise book. Plus, I think I can handle more than three or four crunches (I think she says you can do "up to five").
Also, be aware that the author has a judgmental streak. I may agree with some of her digs at the medical establishment (I was delighted, for example, to hear her pooh-pooh the idea that lying or exercising on your back will cause supine hypotension), but when she aims her barbs at women with bad posture, for example, it seems counter-productive (I could do without the screaming jagged "NO!"s next to the pictures of incorrect posture).
Book Description
On the Nature of Prejudice commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Gordon Allport 's classic work on prejudice and discrimination by examining the current state of knowledge in the field. A distinguished collection of international scholars considers Allport 's impact on the field, reviews recent developments, and identifies promising directions for future investigation. Book Description
Every parent of twins knows that raising them can be full of unique challenges. Getting through the first twelve months may be especially difficult, but that is only the first hurdle. In Raising Twins After the First Year, author Karen Gottesman, a mother of boy-and-girl twins herself, guides parents through the many specific issues they will face as their twins grow from age one to ten. She covers ways to deal with “the terrible two’s times two”—potty training, the legitimacy of cryptophasia (twin language), sibling rivalry, managing double mood swings, how to start to give your twins independence, and much more. Completely practical and down-to-earth, Raising Twins After the First Year will be a useful and comforting resource for every parent bringing up twins.

Disappointing... Very elementary advice.......2007-06-30
When I saw the title of this book I was thrilled -- it was exactly what I was looking for! But I was very disappointed when I began reading it. I hoped the book would get better with each chapter but it only got worse... The chapters based on age are very limited and short. It was so basic and boring that I was shocked this book even got published. It explains many "no-brainer" to parents of twins. An example is that it takes the time to explain that fraternal twins were created with two eggs and identical twins with one egg. I'm guessing the majority of twin parents already knew that...
I would love to find a book that provides tips in raising twins after the infant stage -- but this book is NOT it.
Looking for More.......2006-09-14
I was so excited to get this book and when I got to the end I was still waiting for the tricks and advise to the many issues I am having with my 21 month old twins. The author has some good stories and thoughts that pertained to her situations. I didn't seem to find the answers or comments to any problems I was having. I wish there was more info on the problem stages instead of a little info on every stage. I had to stop reading after about a third through the book because I didn't need info on age 5 + yet. I should have gotten a book about toddler issues and then later in life, when needed, buy a book on preteens etc.
The book was a good read but not what I was looking for. Try "Ready or not there we go" by Elizabeth Lyons MUCH better for toddler twins!!!!
Looking for more specific hands-on ideas.......2006-04-25
I just got this book (my twins turn 1 in a few days) and eagerly read through the first several chapters. It was an entertaing, fun read, but I was a little dissapointed. I was just hoping for more tricks, ideas, and hands-on suggestions. Perhaps it will be more useful when my twins are older.
Book Description
"An exceptional book that I enthusiastically recommend to everyone whose life has been touched by the death of a baby." Pat Stauber, RN, MSW, Bereavement Coordinator, North Shore Medical Center, Miami, Florida
Your child's death is like losing a part of yourself. . .
This special book speaks to those who have lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, sudden infant death and termination of pregnancy. It is also for the caregivers who help them through this difficult time. The voices of other parents who have suffered the devastation of their baby's death are heard throughout this warmly written, insightful book.
Part One guides parents through the experience of bereavement, from shock to a time of renewal and coping. Hannah Lothrop gently suggests what has helped other parents in this situation and might help you: ideas that are both comforting and practical for working through grief, shared with compassion and understanding.
Part Two provides specific information for caregivers in the hospital and those providing care for the family. These caregivers may include hospital staff, ministers, childbirth educators, funeral directors and support-group members. An extensive resources section helps parents identify additional sources of support.
Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing Your Baby in Pregnancy or the First Year can help parents consecrate their precious memories of this pregnancy, this baby. And with empathy and first-hand knowledge, Hannah Lothrop also helps bereaved parents start an important healing process that resolves grief into acceptance.

A must-buy for anyone who's lost a baby.......2002-02-03
I didn't know what to do with myself when my son died on Jan. 15, 2002. I still am having a huge amount of trouble, but this book is helping me take steps forward even though part of me does not want to. I have purchased many loss books and this one is the best for practical advice. It helps you feel less alone, offers you ideas on what you will go through (all of which you need) but also gives you practical ideas on what to do to help yourself through this horribly difficult time. It is hands down, one of the best books I bought. If you buy only one loss book, buy this one.
Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing your Baby in Pregnancy or.......2000-01-28
This is the best book on the topic of perinatal loss I have read. It is a guide through the grieving process not only for the bereaved parents but also for caretakers, friends and others. This book can help parents make decisions during a time when they may not be able to make decisions or when they not know what their rights and options regarding their precious babies are. It also validates the bereaved parents' feelings, since parents often feel isolated during their grieving process over their child who died before he/she ever lived on this earth. Other parents share their experiences and you realize you are not alone. An exellent book that I will recommend to everybody who has lost a baby or who knows somebody who has lost a baby.

Busy new mom needs book? Read this one........2006-12-13
I gave away my copy. I'm buying a new one for an aquaintance and a spare for myself. My nurse practicioner/nurse-midwife said 'anything by Sheila Kitzinger is good.' I found my copy in the remainders (ie cheap) section of our local bookstore.
It was the only book childrearing/mothering book in my personal library that I felt compelled to read, and I had 6-8 such books. Too busy being a mom to waste time reading about it? Not with this book.

Refreshingly realistic description of the 1st year.......2001-12-23
I haven't read a lot of books about the postpartum period that realistically describe the physical and emotional effects of becoming a mother. This book was a refreshing change of pace. After the birth of my child, I felt guilty about not being overjoyed. Sheila Kitzinger validated my feelings, which made it easier for me to accept my new role as a mother. I disagree with the previous review, describing the book as "depressing and morbid". Unfortunately, hormonal upheavals and dramatic lifestlye changes can feel that way. But I think that anyone that has had a baby should read this book. It describes what many women are thinking, but often don't talk about for fear of being judged as "abnormal". I believe that the author's discussion of these thoughts and feelings can be empowering for a new mother. It's a good read for what can sometimes be a challenging period in a woman's life.
Depressing and morbid........2001-09-25
Don't buy this book. Each chapter seems to focus on the negative aspects of birth and having a baby. It's depressing, morbid, and has little practical information.
I love this book!.......2001-02-07
Giving birth and becoming a mother was chaotic, overwhelming, wonderful and scary at the same time, and of the many books I bought to help me through it, only this book really helped. Where so much that is written about the experience of new parents is advice driven and vaguely judgmental, this book has the perfect empathetic air. So many times while reading this book I would think "oh yes, that is exactly what I have been feeling!" My only advice to expectant mothers would be, buy this book, wrap it up, and give it to yourself as a gift for that moment when you are back home with your new child!!!
A Must for Every New Mom!.......2000-12-04
Sheila Kitzinger has once again gone where no woman has gone before! This time, the renowned feminist, childbirth expert, and author provides an essential guide for self-care so you can make the transition to motherhood without losing your self. Combines practical advice on exercise, eating, and daily life with warm encouragement and affirmation. A wonderful gift for an expectant or new mother.
Honest and True feelings about life after birth..........2000-04-01
This book was a gift from a real friend! I was so lost and unaware about all the stuff that the doctor didn't tell me! Shelia's book gave me a wealth of information about breastfeeding and why babies cry and that it's okay to feel frustrated and say "Why the hell did I do this? " The info about post-partem sex, baby slings and most importanly post partem feelings were priceless and right on. Not may people write honestly and from real life/world experience about the spectrum of feeling and emotion that follow the first intense months of babies and moms life. This book is a must have treasure written by a woman that cares and has made her lifes work about woman! BUY THIS BOOK!

Excellent.......2007-03-19
This is an excellent book as it gives great info regarding depression DURING pregnancy. Well written.
A great resource!.......2005-09-30
I read this before my first child was born and it was so helpful. It was very honest and informative, but NOT SCARY like so many other books that I read. I highly recommend this book for first timers and beyond.
Knowing what to expect makes the unknown easier to approach........2004-06-29
For many women, the time period after giving birth is an unknown -- How will they feel? Is there any pain involved? What can I expect? Even though each pregnancy and after birth experience is different, if a woman has never given birth before, she is much in the dark about what she can actually expect.
The book "The Post-Pregnancy Handbook," by Sylvia Brown, explains in detail what new mothers can expect to feel after giving birth. It discusses recovery and any problems you might experience; caring for and getting your body back after you get home; breastfeeding; relationship issues; sex; and exercise.
MyParenTime.com recommends this book -- it answers many questions that women might be afraid to ask their doctors, and aims to reassure women that they can recover from pregnancy...physically, emotionally, and sexually. If women know what to expect after childbirth, they will be more equipped to deal with post-pregnancy experiences.
Give this book to every pregnant woman.......2004-02-27
When I was pregnant I read a ton of pregnancy and baby books, but none prepared me for the post-pregnancy realities. All pregnancy books ended at labor and all baby books started with baby. But I had a really difficult time after the birth of my first baby and there was nothing available for ME. This book gives new moms honest information to help them get back to themselves in every way -- emotionally, physically and sexually. Now I give this book to every pregnant friend. It is the best shower gift.
Fine guide book.......2003-11-07
THE POST-PREGNANCY HANDBOOK provides a wide scope look at post-partum issues that mothers face in the first year following the birth of the child. The self help book came about because Ms. Brown found little guidance amidst the available but scattered literature as her body continued with the change process that pregnancy caused.
The guide is a general help tool on a myriad of topics (this reviewer doubts any were left out or at least cannot think of any), but by attempting to be so comprehensive, depth is somewhat lacking. When I showed my husband the statistician some of the supporting numbers, he groused that the statistical support lacks specificity making it unreliable as a source of information.
Still this is an easy to follow book and appears comprehensive in terms of including all the issues (medical and societal). Used correctly as an all-purpose guide that needs follow-up with a personal professional, THE POST-PREGNANCY HANDBOOK is a strong tome assisting the new momma with one source that furbishes possible answers to a host of questions and doubts.

Awakening the Spiritual Aspects of Motherhood.......2000-12-22
Ms. Hallett has clearly and beautifully addressed the "other side" of postpartum days. Aside from the physical, the days and weeks after birth offer each mother the gift of awareness. Awareness of the child, her life and herself. These stories of women experiencing the first nudges of spiritual awakening through motherhood push us all to examine our own experiences with our children. The pages ask us to consider the existance of something more powerful around us. It is a one of a kind book, daring to look at the most powerful time in a woman's life. Thank you, Elisabeth Hallett, for recognizing the miracle of this time.
Uniquely spellbinding!.......1999-02-28
While I often pour through a book from cover to cover within a day or two, not so with Elisabeth Hallett's _In the Newborn Year_! I savoured it for weeks! With every revelation and each reported experience, I was cast further and further adrift on a sea of my own thoughts and memories, recalling with amazing detail my experience of that intense, joyful and sometimes tumultuous time of life referred to as the postpartum.
This book was definitely not what I expected! More than conventional stories of mother/infant bonding, Ms. Hallett gives us intimate and thought-provoking glimpses into her own and other women's postpartum experiences, which for many include voyages into exotic imaginal realms, and mysterious, sometimes disturbing altered states of awareness. From the blissful to the surreal, no two experiences described in her book are alike, yet they are connected by a common thread. The message is that even the most difficult of postpartum journeys are transformational opportunities for the psyche which may lead, not only to a deep and more intimate connection between mother and child, but also to greater levels of personal growth and self-awareness, and the birth of enhanced creativity and freedom. My only regret is that _In the Newborn Year_ was not yet published when I began my own journey into motherhood!
