For families that place good food high on their list of priorities, educating their wee ones about the joys of sushi may be far more important than teaching about bunnies and balls and flowers. But even those who don't know futomaki from hatahata will relish the playful rhymes and lush collages in Amy Wilson Sanger's wonderful First Book of Sushi.
Miso in my sippy cup,
tofu in my bowl.
Crab and avocado
fill my California roll.
English-speaking tots will love wrapping their lips around Japanese words such as tekka maki, ebi, and wasabi, and will soon be joining in the bouncy recitation of sushi favorites for the very young. This bright little board book, with its gorgeous array of patterns and textured, mixed-media collages, looks good enough to eat. And who knows, it might even inspire picky eaters to try a little egg tamago or squishy salmon roe (otherwise known as ikura)! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
For the littlest fans of that favorite Japanese finger food comes a sturdy board book sure to inspire giggles (and even some growling stomachs!). Sanger's textural, mixed media and cut paper collages form an ideal accompaniment to her bouncy rhyming text to captivate/fascinate even the most finicky eaters. Whether a temaki know-it-all or clueless about ebi, First Book of Sushi is a welcome side dish for nori experts and novices of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful little boar book.......2007-06-01
This is a really cute little book. Perfect for any sushi loving parent. For the food lovers, she's done books for lots of different cuisines.
my baby LOVES these books.......2007-05-23
i was given a stack of these board books at my baby shower. First Book of Sushi, Yum Yum Dim Sum, Urban Babies Wear Black, as well as, the Petit Connoisseur: Art and The Petit Connoisseur: fashion, my kid LOVES them!! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such! And they are virtually indestructible! Great addition to any new baby room!
cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07
My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!
First Book of Sushi - Tiny Little Book.......2007-01-22
This is a very little kid's book, one of those small 5.5 inch x 5.5 inch, indestructable, 10 thick little pages. I was surprised when I received it. Almost too infant-like for my 5 yr old. It was a little fun though and I didn't return it. Just skimpy, a little disappointing. Honestly, can't remember if it was adequately decribed in the Amazon description. For $6.95, you decide.
Turning raw fish into fun rhymes.......2006-11-05
This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"
I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).
Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.

Book Description
Renowned therapist, eating disorder specialist and recovering food addict Kay Sheppard helps countless individuals win their battles over food addiction-people for whom diets, pills and purging have become a way of life. In 1993, her groundbreaking book, Food Addiction: The Body Knows, explained the illness of food addiction from the physiological origins through recovery. Today, obesity is on the rise. In addition to the 300,000 overweight people in this country, millions more who may not look overweight are unable to control their eating. Sheppard's follow-up book, From the First Biteoffers the latest medical insights into food addiction coupled with time-tested, practical advice. Unlike other books that are very dry in nature, this book includes compelling personal stories and do's and don'ts from other recovering and relapsed food addicts, including the author herself, who began her own recovery in 1967. The book explains how to avoid the physiological and situational triggers that lead to relapse; how to confront the emotional issues behind food cravings; how to establish a balanced food plan that eliminates cravings; and how to avoid hidden dangers in cleverly packaged foods. The book also includes a handy Twelve-Step workbook. Just as Sheppard's first book broke new ground, her latest work offers a critical first step for food addicts on the road to physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.
Customer Reviews:
Hope for the hopeless.......2007-09-30
This book opened my eyes to realize I had a Disease and that I was not crazy. I realize that it wasn't because I didn't posess the willpower to conquer a diet program and win, it explains so well how the disease progresses eventually to death. No one wants to be called an "Addict" that sounds so harsh. But in reality, it is a matter of LIFE or DEATH. Very in depth to the truth of food addiction with a plan of recovery and hope for the "hopeless"
Life Saver to say the least.......2007-03-12
Oh my God! What can I say about this book. Kay's first book is a good introduction to the Food Addiction subject but From the First Bite is much more than a complement. Is a must have if you related to Food Addiction. Everytime I read it, and I read it all the time like a survival of life kind of book, I feel renewed and strong enough to continue with my new way of eating and of life. Everyday I feel recovered from a disease that had devastated me. I am so thankful that a book like this one came to my attention. I am even thankful with Amazon for making it easy for me to have it!!! Thanks Kay Sheppard reading your words is getting hugs, love and approval on a regular basis.
From someone who has both read the book AND worked the food plan..........2007-02-03
I have been a binge eater for years, I have read this book from beginning to end, I have science/medical coursework as part of my education, and I have used this as my plan of eating. Given all that, I believe that this is a valuable book for anyone who is desperate to find a better way than living with food addiction/compulsive overeating/binge eating.
To be fair, it's really better that you do read Kay's other "The Body Knows" book to fully know what kinds of food issues she is directly addressing with this book - this book is the "what to do", the other book is more the "why". If you don't know why you're doing something, you're not going to be motivated; unless, of course, nothing else has worked and you're willing to try anything. In any event, it is a plan based on sound nutrition that is formulated to fix your mind while you fix your physical/chemical issues with food.
Not everyone who has food issues has to cut out everything that Kay suggests. That said, if you work this plan AS WRITTEN, you'll more than likely remove all of your trigger foods, remove the mental dance around volume eating and gorging, and actually eat healthy. More than that, you'll change your lifestyle, which is what most health experts say you need to do anyway.
So if something else works well for you, I'm very happy for you - congratulations! But if you've suffered from food addiction and issues surrounding compulsive eating and/or binge eating, then try this program for 90 days. If you're not completely satisfied, your misery will be fully refunded.
Completely Ridiculous.......2006-05-05
It's obvious that all these glowing reviews are by a small band of loyal groupies from the Kay Sheppard Yahoo group.
It's about time to start asking some questions here. Like, if Kay Sheppard is an "expert", then where did she get her training? What university? Where is her research? Where was it conducted? What exactly do these so-called credentials she uses mean? Where is ANY science to back up or give credence to anything she states? If you can't eat white rice, but you can eat white potatoes, where in the science of biochemistry does that seeming contradiction support itself?
The book and the entire premise that it's based on is entirely made up out of folk lore, oral tradition, junk science and food quackery, and it capitalizes on the sad and lonely search for something, anything, to help dysfunctional eaters stop eating destructively.
For all the book's claims, there is zero evidence that the 'food plan' works, or that any statistically relevant number of people ever achieve "abstinence" beyond short and sporadic episodes. Since Sheppard has no peer-reviewed research or any documentated legitimacy to the claims promoted by the book, it has to go to the same junk pile that every other diet book goes.
Unhelpful for binge eaters.......2006-04-25
I have been a food addict for years now, and I was looking for a step-by-step recovery plan to help me. This book is terrible and the suggestions are completely ridiculous. For example, Kay Sheppard says not to use iodized salt because it contains sugar. This is blatantly untrue--check the label of any salt container yourself. Furthermore, her "abstinent" meal plan recipes include potato salad and blueberry muffins--total binge foods for just about anyone!

Handy little book.......2007-06-08
This is a very handy book to tuck in your purse or keep in your pocket as you follow the First Place Live-It plan. Lists not only foods you prepare but also exchanges from some of the most popular chain restaurants.
Handy, but limited.......2007-04-06
This handy pocket guide is a helpful resource for anyone following an exchange-based dietary plan (First Place members, Weight Watchers, and diabetics, among others). Because of its small size, it is limited. Not all foods are listed. But if you want to be able to double check portion sizes for common foods, this little book will help.
Useful book.......2004-12-31
this book has been very handy and useful to use on the first place program, it easily fits in your pocket or purse and comes in handy at the grocery store.

Customer Reviews:
Little one loves this book.......2007-07-15
I am not a huge fan of this book, but my daughter LOVES it, so I am giving it 5 stars. She refused to try a sticky bun tonight because 'it's junk food', so I appreciate that (we mostly eat healthy around here). I just hope that she never points at anyone out in public and says something like "they eat way too much junk food".
A classic, even if you like junk food.......2007-01-24
I buy this book for all the little people in my life, after growing up loving it myself. It's a Berenstain Bears book, so it needs little introduction on its moral qualities and instruction. But it's a good book that offers a balanced look on... eating balanced.
But I especially enjoy the illustrations of the junk food. They're up there with Hooper Humperdinck - Not Him!
better teachers than i am..........2007-01-19
l bought these books to give to my little nephew for christmas. we are now well grown out of berenstein bears' books, but my children and i remember them well! the kids loved them because, among other things, they were a longish and satisfying read with mom or dad, not a quickie, but a book with a real story, particularly effective for delaying bedtime with a long book. all the books teach and some of the lessons still echo down the years. 'messy build-up' has kept the kids' rooms fairly tidy for years. manners? well, manners pave the way in life like few other things and are so critically important. junk food? there's an important message to teach about junk food and we needed all the help we could get with reinforcing it. we have a foot high stack of the berenstein books upstairs, carefully tucked away for the next generation. it is such a pleasure to buy them and give them as truly valuable gifts.
Good Book .......2006-11-15
This is a good book. It teaches that eating junk food just makes a person chubby and isn't providing any nutrients the body needs. However, when Mamma Bear hides the food in the freezer, that isn't a good idea especially since she tells them. A kid could just go there and grab the treats. Further, denying kids treats totally is not a good idea either. Better is to let them have one treat a day or every other day then to totally not let them have any at all. Then when they do get treats like on Halloween, Christmas, and Easter, they will binge on them. Also the part about the bears all running all the way home is too farfetched. The home is far away and if they have not been exercising as they should have been then that jog is too much to take at that time for them. They should work their way up first so they don't get sore muscles.
Great teaching book for all libraries!.......2005-12-29
This is a cute book even without a message attached to it and it makes my little one laugh every time we read it. Dealing with eating too much candy and junk food is the subject and it starts with mama seeing that her cubs were eating all the time and getting quite chubby. So, after running into the family doctor at the grocery store, the bear family gets to see a slide show on the body and how it works. Plus, they learn the importance of eating good food and not the junk. The best part is something that all of us have difficulty doing. Mama bear throws out all the junk food in the house (actually, she puts it in the freezer) and provides only healthy snacks like carrot sticks, nuts and raisins. We've even tried this and believe me, it works. There's now a preference over candy for nuts and raisins (especially the yogurt ones!) and candy, well, it's just not that prevalent anymore. I highly recommend this one - it will stick with your children for life.

Food Additives: A Shopper's Guide To What's Safe & What's Not
ASIN: 1560259221 |
Book Description
Like Silent Spring, Diet for a Poisoned Planet took on an entire industry and went onto become a classic work of environmental writing. Now reissued in a new millennium edition, the work's in-depth look at the contaminants in individual food items is updated with the latest Total Diet Study findings.
A motivating book, Diet for a Poisoned Planet changes people viscerally. Steinman tells his own story of fishing in the Santa Monica Bay as a child and how he went on to testify before Congress as an expert witness on the contamination of his own body by the fish he ate. The book is written by a true expert who has been a member of a National Academy of Sciences committee to advise Congress on seafood safety legislation.
Customer Reviews:
Diet for a Poisoned Planet.......2007-06-27
Very interesting book. Documented on USDA reports. Makes me afraid to eat anything commercial, however. It is also very revealing about how slack our government is in regulating the amount of poisons on our produce. We need to demand organic products. They are available, albeit more expensive. But the more demand, the lower the price. Right?
disappointed by the update.......2007-01-19
I bought this book because it was an update from the 1990 book, which I also own. In reading from the beginning, it would appear that the only information that is new are the results of the new tests for toxicity. Perhaps I am wrong, because I didn't study and compare both books side by side, but that was my impression and my impressions are usually accurate. Having read the original book years ago, it was like re-reading it so I went over that part very, very quickly. For those who haven't read the first book, you will probably find this book a five star. It was somewhat of a disappointment to me, yet I'm still giving it four stars because of valuable education on what is toxic and what is not, how toxic it is or isn't and from where it is and where it is not.
An invaluable resource for eating healthfully!.......2007-01-06
I am a big fan of the author and first discovered "Diet for a Poisoned Planet" when the first edition was published in 1990. I just read David Steinman's latest book "Safe Trip to Eden: Ten Steps to Save Planet Earth From the Global Warming Meltdown" and this is an excellent companion.
I am quite suspicious that two of the reviews below seems to be from the California Advisory Board's counter PR campaign to the first edition. However, as a result of the information in this book, many raisin companies reduced or eliminated the spraying of DDT on raisins! Here are some references on this PR campaign:

The Greatest Story Ever Told!.......2006-12-29
I bought this book in the early 1990's and it changed my life. It was the most informative book I have ever read (and I read them all!) on the subject of a healthy diet and what goes into (and onto) the food we eat. I carried this book around as my food "bible" for years and years and was thankful every day that Mr. Steinman did thousands of hours of research to help make my life healthier and happier by testing the foods we all eat for toxic residues and other toxic substances and publishing the results. This book is for EVERYONE. Every person on this planet should read this book and use it to help them make their food choices.
A few years back I was wondering if some of the material in the book wasn't outdated, especially with the boom in organic food available now (thank goodness) and wished Mr. Steinman would update the book. My copy is old and tatered but I still refered to it all the time. Low and behold, it's here! An updated version! Long awaited, I pre-ordered it on Amazon and it arrived yesterday and I've already read most of it. It is just as great as the old version and I feel better that the information is now more current, espeically since I have two small children to feed, and the current information is invaluable. PLEASE, read this book. Do it for yourself, your health, your kids, YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. The information is will change your life for the better.
I grew up in Pacific Palisades, near the Santa Monica Bay where Mr. Steinman's story begins, so I truly understand his reason for writing this book (I remember the signs posted on the Santa Monica Pier too warning not to eat the fish caught! AWFUL!) and wanting and NEEDING to know the truth about what goes into our precious food. If people trust our government to keep our food healthy you are fools. Take matters into your own hands. Buy this book.
By the way, I just read some disturbing reviews that insinuated that this book has something to do with Scientology. I've read this book cover to cover for over a decade and can't figure out how some people come up with these sort of strange ideas. Very worrying....
Thank you Mr. Steinman for taking care of me and my family! Truly!

Book Description
The Food Chemicals Codex is the accepted standard for defining the quality and purity of food chemicals. It is frequently referenced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and many international food regulatory authorities. This Second Supplement to the Fourth Edition provides revisions and updates, reports on changes in tests and assays, and includes an errata section to both the First Supplement as well as to the Fourth Edition.
This supplement also includes eight new and 34 revised monographs, two new and two revised general analytical test methods, and one new test solution. As in the First Supplement, each monograph will be presented in its entirety with a boxed explanatory section preceding it. The corrected or new sections of general analytical tests are also presented in their entirety. A more specific table of contents and the use of page headers, along with other planned design changes, will make this text even easier to use.
The supplement will be of interest to producers and users of food chemicals, including processed-food manufacturers, food technologists, quality control chemists, research investigators, teachers, students, and others involved in the technical aspects of food safety.

In Your Face Raw.......2007-01-10
This is a very concise in your face addition of a raw food informational book. It strictly tells you many INTERESTING details about the benefits of eating raw for yourself and for the stewardship of Mother Earth. I thoroughly enjoyed it and believe everyone should be aware of its contents. It teaches truths many of us have yet to ponder. You will be happy you learned what you did from this book. I've read it twice, once in the beginning of college and then again four years later; so happy I reread it recently because it opened up my eyes again to truly believing in a clean diet for all.
I read some other reviews that this work was plagiarized from a man named Arshavir Ter Hovannessian in Place Sanai, 2 Kamkar Avenue, Tehran, Iran. This is very interesting to me. I don't know whether it's true or not and I'm not sure how they found out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. David Wolfe hasn't reached spiritual enlightenment by far (I spent a week with him at a retreat in Hawaii) wasn't impressed at all by his womanizing behavior and egocentric attitude. I don't put much stock into his partner Steven Thor Arlin either. Nevertheless the information is good. If the plagiarism is true please thank Arshavir Ter Hovannessian instead and go to his website. I heard he is in prison, if so my prayers are with him.
I disagree with most reviews thus far..........2006-03-26
Not only is this my favorite RAW book, it's probably in my top 5 favorite books altogether. Yes, it is a jolting book so far as their message being overtly strong, but the fact that people are dismissing it so quickly because of a lack of "scientific evidence" is part of the point they are trying to get across; "scientific evidence" is too often trusted in place of REAL LIFE experience (from which this book is actually written). Of course people are going to become defensive and claim this book is "terrible!" when it so blatantly causes them to reconsider almost everything they have been taught regarding food.
Everybody is different, and will respond differently to every situation. But I really DO recommend this book for those with an open mind, who want the low-down on RAW food vs. Cooked food written from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. And I implore others, who have dismissed this book so readily, to reconsider the true motives of doing so. Reconsider the points made in this book, whether or not you agree with the writing style or the sentence "Cooked food is poison."
I've been a RAW foodist for going on 9 months. And I return to this book often for inspiration. Sometimes you need somebody getting in your face about something, and I think that that is exactly what most DON'T like about this book; that the authors do not sugarcoat their message of cooked food being entirely unhealthy, and that those who indulge regularly in cooked food are approaching health incorrectly.
Set aside your "How dare you call me wrong!" attitudes and take on a perspective aside from the socially-conditioned one we've all been brought up with. Please.
There are better things to do with your money..........2006-02-16
This book is not motivating, is not well written and as someone said, followed no logical pattern.
For those "enthusiastic" souls who were quite liberal with handing out stars (Where were you when I was in grammar school), I have a sneeking suspicion that the folks at NFL (Nature's First Law)have been stuffing the ballot.
In the long run I think a raw food approach to eating has a lot of validity. I have read other books on raw foodism by other authors that were better written and more fluid in their information.
I think David Wolfe has quite a bit of potential, I have heard him on CoasttoCoastAM.com and he was very well spoken and informed. I believe he can become a real leader in the world of raw eating.
So, buy this at your own risk, and see how you like it.
amateur brainwashing........2006-01-12
This was the first book I read to aid me in going raw. Unfortunately I was so put off by how idiotic the writers sounded, I returned it and put off going raw for awhile. A plain insult to one's intelligence. I agree with most of the comments here, especially the "cooked food is poison" remark, which stirred me up just as much, and the religion remark. Made me wonder if maybe they were missing a few sanity nutrients from cooked food.
That was a joke, you rawies can put your heavy artillery away!
Thankfully other books have had a better effect and actual facts to support claims, as opposed to, well, cooked food is poison.. cooked food is poison.. cooked food is poison.. cooked food is poison.. cooked food is poison.. cooked food is poison...
Impossible to give zero stars.......2005-12-07
This is one of the five worst books I've ever read, and that does not include even Jane Austen or Adi Da or The Tao of Pooh-all very crappy, but not this crappy. The book averages three stars simply because the first 10-15 reviews were written by the authors and are 5 stars. Everyone else hates it for a good reason: it is terrible. This was my first book on the subject-luckily I have enough sense to know I am reading crap so I stopped at page 32 (perhaps more of a chance than it deserved), and will look for another book on this subject I am so eager to learn about. If you are thinking about getting this book, do yourself a favor: just read the first half of the first paragraph of the first chapter. If you like it, you will like the book!

Let's Cook.......2006-08-01
I bought this cookbook for my grandchildren. It came to where I work and all the ladies just loved going through looking at the simple recipes and all the great information about measurements, etc. One of the ladies even asked me to get her one for her daughter who is going off to college. The daughter loves it and the first night she sat down and colored one of the pages, ran into where her mom was and said mommy look at my picture I colored!!!! How fun!!! The recipes are simple, there's tons of information and you can even color the pages!!! What more could you want!!! Went back and bought another one for my son who will soon be out on his own!!

Cute pics, not much language.......2007-08-18
Don't buy this if you want a story line or a lot of language. There are just a few pictures of food with both the French and English words. However they are very cute pictures which my son enjoys.
Try "Usbornes First 1000 words" in French for more useful and extensive picture dictionary to share with your child.
Great book.......2007-01-18
I love this series of books. Great way for the kids to learn French!!
