    Book Description

"An exceptional book that I enthusiastically recommend to everyone whose life has been touched by the death of a baby." Pat Stauber, RN, MSW, Bereavement Coordinator, North Shore Medical Center, Miami, Florida

Your child's death is like losing a part of yourself. . .

This special book speaks to those who have lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, sudden infant death and termination of pregnancy. It is also for the caregivers who help them through this difficult time. The voices of other parents who have suffered the devastation of their baby's death are heard throughout this warmly written, insightful book.

Part One guides parents through the experience of bereavement, from shock to a time of renewal and coping. Hannah Lothrop gently suggests what has helped other parents in this situation and might help you: ideas that are both comforting and practical for working through grief, shared with compassion and understanding.

Part Two provides specific information for caregivers in the hospital and those providing care for the family. These caregivers may include hospital staff, ministers, childbirth educators, funeral directors and support-group members. An extensive resources section helps parents identify additional sources of support.

Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing Your Baby in Pregnancy or the First Year can help parents consecrate their precious memories of this pregnancy, this baby. And with empathy and first-hand knowledge, Hannah Lothrop also helps bereaved parents start an important healing process that resolves grief into acceptance.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-buy for anyone who's lost a baby.......2002-02-03

I didn't know what to do with myself when my son died on Jan. 15, 2002. I still am having a huge amount of trouble, but this book is helping me take steps forward even though part of me does not want to. I have purchased many loss books and this one is the best for practical advice. It helps you feel less alone, offers you ideas on what you will go through (all of which you need) but also gives you practical ideas on what to do to help yourself through this horribly difficult time. It is hands down, one of the best books I bought. If you buy only one loss book, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing your Baby in Pregnancy or.......2000-01-28

This is the best book on the topic of perinatal loss I have read. It is a guide through the grieving process not only for the bereaved parents but also for caretakers, friends and others. This book can help parents make decisions during a time when they may not be able to make decisions or when they not know what their rights and options regarding their precious babies are. It also validates the bereaved parents' feelings, since parents often feel isolated during their grieving process over their child who died before he/she ever lived on this earth. Other parents share their experiences and you realize you are not alone. An exellent book that I will recommend to everybody who has lost a baby or who knows somebody who has lost a baby.

After several years of writing a regular column about the despair, anger and confusion she felt after the death of her only child, Marie Levine weaves the story of her own bereavement into a collection of essays, poems and writings that chronicle her own surviving mother's journey. As a nightmarish reality envelops her, Marie describes the ultimate restoration of hope and healing as she learns to live a whole new life she could never have imagined.

5 out of 5 stars Hope for the Childless Parent.......2007-05-27

Excellent and beautifully written account on the impact of losing an only child. As a "childless" parent, I search for like-literature in bereavement material. I am often disappointed to find either a couple of lines, or no mention at all on the loss of an only child - or all children. I commend Marie for having the courage to write this book and being the voice of now-childless parents- as she describes the added, and yes, quite different set of circumstances we face in our quest for survival. Thank you for articulating so well all that we are and hope to be.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Marie.......2007-05-17

The horrific tragedy that has befallen my life, I thought, was too painful to explain but Marie has done an excellent job of it with her book. It is like Marie had read my mind and journals. Sadly, I know all too well the pain of losing your only child. Marie, thank you for writing such a wonderful book and making me understand that I am not alone in my thoughts and feelings.

    4 out of 5 stars Happily Surprised!!.......2007-08-12

My son had to read this book for his summer reading assigment. I also read this book so I could quiz him on it later. I actually enjoyed reading it. It was in the young adult section of the library and I thought that I would get bored with it. I was surprised. Mr. Cormier knows how to pull his readers in his story, young and not so young. This book was very thought provoking and my 15 year old enjoyed it too. He actually liked dicussing it with me afterwards, which was very surprising.

    1 out of 5 stars Still screaming!.......2005-08-21

I don't know how anybody could bear to write this book. It was so creepy! I guess there are a few good parts, but not many. I had to use the book for a book report and it was really freaky. I can't believe I chose it for free choice! Children twelve and under, I don't recommend this book! Please consider this review before purchasing this book for your child or yourself! Consider yourself warned!

    5 out of 5 stars Exciting.......2005-03-18

The novel, After the First Death by Robert Comier, is an exciting thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. This book gives you three different perspectives of what is going on in the book. Comier allows you to enter the minds of three main characters named: Kate, Miro, and Ben. Kate is the innocent bus driver which has no control of the terrorists that entered the bus, Miro is one of the terrorists that take over the bus, and Ben is a son of a General who is part of a top secret agency in the military. I came across this book when I was assigned to read it for English class in school. This book is so exciting that I read past the number of assigned pages for the night just to find out what would happen next. The way Comier decides to narrate the book captures you into reading more of the book.
The book first starts you out with Ben's perspective of what had happened the day on the bridge. What he thinks of happened ruined `Inner Delta' which is a top secret military agency which his dad is apart of. And then you witness your first perspective change in the book when the point of view switches to Miro who is one of the terrorists assigned to hijack a school bus full of kids. This shift tells you the plan of what is going to happen and when it will happen. It also gives you a background of Miro where we learn that Miro calls his team of terrorists `Freedom Fighters' who are trying to win back their precious `Homeland', and we also discover he is a regular teenager with likes/ dislikes. After we learn what the terrorists plans are we then witness the hijacking of the bus, how it was exacuted, and where they are taking the bus. And then finally we get the perspective of the bus driver whose name is Kate. Cormier allows us to enter the mind of Kate and find out what weaknesses and strengths Kate has. People who enjoy exciting thrillers will enjoy this book. This book has left me on the edge of my seat and I'm sure it will to you to.
I highly recommend this book to teens who don't normally read books. This book may change the teenagers opinion on books. When you start reading this you will not be able to put the book down. Go and pick up a copy of this exciting thriller today!

1 out of 5 stars Model of Hollywood Formula.......2005-03-17

Cormier's book is written for young adults, but in many ways, this writing is insulting to the reader. There is a distinct level of the Hollywood formula that this book models. In other words, you have the introduction, you have the climax, you have the descent. Ok, all plots follow this, but in Cormier's book it is so much a part of the text that it takes away from the story. Additionally, in this book, the climax is so brief that it really is almost an irrelevant part of the story other than a climax is necessary.

As I read this book, what I pictured in my mind was the book cover being turned into a movie poster. This shouldn't have been written as a novel, instead it should have been written as a screenplay. However, in terms of screenplays, I think Battlefield Earth would be better than this.

The basis of the story ties into the modern day issue of terrorists infiltrating the United States and then taking hostages so that certain demands can be met. As a story idea, it's great, it's the execution of the story that is so disappointing. The overall dialogue is poor and as you read it, it seems forced. The use of imagery is ok, but all in all even this is short changed in the book, finally the plot development is less than desirable. Cormier does try to experiment a little in his writing by bouncing between first and third person and back and forth in time, which is the only thing that kept me reading the story. All in all, even for young adults that are looking for action, there are much better choices out there.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps you reading until the end!.......2004-05-28

Robert Cormier's Thriller "After the first death" is dealing with a problem that is even more topical today as in the days Cormier wrote it 1979: terrorism.
He writes about the hijacking of a bus full of children on an old railway-bridge and the consequences for all people who were involved in it. The plot is described out of different perspectives in different times which could be a little bit confusing at the beginnig, but this style of writing later makes it easier for the reader to understand the actions of both sides, on the one hand the actions of the terrorists and on the other hand the reactions of the victims, esspecially Mark and Ben, a General and his son, whose relationship is very problematic, and Kate, the driver of the bus, who tries to fight against the threat of the terrorists.
All in all, Robert Cormier's style of writing and the detailed description of the inner selves of the characters who all undergo a certain development keeps you reading to an Hollywood unlike ending.

5 out of 5 stars True ? Don't know but the tips could change your life!.......2004-01-06

I picked up this book just out of curiosity. Well, I don't know whether it is true or false but the analogy explained here is very logical and consistent with our over all perception of reality.

I am writing review not because the description of afterlife fascinated me but for the concluding chapters where Susan gave us some tips about how to live our present lives here. I think if you read only that much and practice some of them; your life will change.

Don't know what happen after we die but as long as we are living here (we have no choice but to continue like that till that call comes!) we can best use it.

5 out of 5 stars Also a Guide to the Present Life.......2002-06-23

I appreciate "Guided Tour to the Afterlife" with all my heart. It
affirmed many things for me, and also gave me a sense of peace to feel
and envision, from the very personal level Susan comes from, the state
of existence I came from and that to which I will return. I can say
that the insights I gained from Susan will actually help me live life
here with more freedom and understanding and peace.
Harriett and Susan have given the world a great gift. This is a
cutting edge book that everyone needs to read for encouragement in
creating happier lives for themselves. I can't imagine that there is a
person anywhere who wouldn't benefit from the information in its pages.
I am very much looking forward to their next book.

2 out of 5 stars Just plain bad...........2001-05-29

I looked forward to reading this book based on the other reviews here and was sorely disappointed. It's poorly written with a rather fantastic premise filled with boring personal anecdotes.Let's face it,just about anyone can write a book on the afterlife and describe their 'communication' with those who have passed on,but this book is simply devoid of any credibility or original research; it doesn't even make good fiction. There are a lot of good books out there on life after death; this isn't one of them.Avoid.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK.......2001-04-08

CORRESPONDS WITH MY OWN KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE. BUT IT EVER TAKES THE READER FURTHER INTO THE AFTERLIFE. I COULDN'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN. PROBABLY THE BEST I HAVE EVER READ ON THIS SUBJECT. I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT OF THE AFTERLIFE.

1 out of 5 stars Too Clinical For Me.......2000-10-03

I lost my dear father recently and became quite interested in what he was experiencing in the afterlife. This was the first book I read on the subject and it was actually upsetting to me. I subseqently read a book by Echo Bodine, which I found much warmer, much gentler and more comforting. I was better able to reconcile my beliefs in God and the afterlife much more with Echo Bodine's book. It's helped me feel more at peace with my dad's continuing presence in my life. I hesitate to say anything negative about a book that's been a comfort to the other reviewers, but felt I needed to offer my differing opinion.

    5 out of 5 stars A support group in a book!.......2006-03-23

I have been leading widowed support groups for several years. A variety of topics continue to be addressed by most widowed people. This book takes these topics and talks about them similar to the way they are discussed in a suport group. Many people are afraid to bring up items in group as they think they are going crazy or are the only people to feel as they do. Laurie-Ann's book brings out these issues and discusses them in a way that is applicable to every person who has lost their spouse or partner. Excellent book that every widowed person should have and read.

5 out of 5 stars Important book for widowed people.......2006-03-19

I write a newspaper column titled "Single Again" for the Orange County Register in southern California. I am in daily contact with new widows and widowers. I recommend to them Laurie-Ann's book. It will help them fight their way through the first year after losing their spouse.

Laurie-Ann lost her husband unexpectedly. She describes her way through the pain and then provides encouraging tips for people having similar experiences. A 5-star must read. Highly recommended.

This book will pull you in and never let you go. Hearing the stories and thoughts of others within the backdrop of Laurie-Ann's own story is both haunting and heart-warming--whether you've experienced a loss like the author's or not (yet). You'll cry and you'll laugh. And you'll want to talk about this book when you're done. For those going through that very personal journey of recovering from the death of a loved one, which is on ongoing process that never really ends, this book can be your best friend who holds tighly onto your hand.

Everyone need to handle their grief in there own way and not be critized for it ' Laurie you wrote the book BUT IT'S OUR BOOK a book we can share and know we aren't alone in grief
Thanks . This is a book every grievance counselor should read because it came from the heart of the people who lost someone .

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 1969 Block Thriller Does Show Its Age in Parts.......2006-03-02

This is not a bad short thriller, originally published in 1969 references throughout do definitely constantly highlight this is not a modern tale. A pack of cigarettes is purchased for 4c, you can get a taxi from one side of Manhattan to the other for just over $2 and chocolate bars cost 10c are factors in the first few chapters that keep reminding you of this fact. Still After the First Death is a pleasant light quick easy read and is definitely ideal for the commute to work or to read somewhere like on a plane.

In After the First Death Alex awakes with a killer hangover and has suffered another severe blackout where he cannot remember a thing from the time he started drinking. As he tries to work out where he is and gather his clothing he is shocked to see they are covered in red wine. Closer inspection reveals they are in fact covered in blood and the girl with the slit throat next to the knife covered in blood seems to be the source. Alex has been in this situation before and was recently let out of jail on a technicality after four years for that murder. Like now he blacked out after a heavy drinking session. He was sure he was innocent then, but knows no one will believe him this time round. He isn't even sure of his innocence himself.
