Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mothers Day Lunch.......2007-02-09

The attractivness of this story is the special bond that has occurred with Henry and his family. He is so excited about Mothers Day "knowing" that he and dad will take a secret trip to get something special for mom. Arriving home they creatively make something together, that they think mom will just love! Mudge and his appetite just enhance the humor that makes this an all around fun story.

4 out of 5 stars another Henry and Mudge.......2005-09-30

Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat". My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day. If you love the series, get it. If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Biscuit Loves Mother's Day.......2007-06-12

I believe that all the Biscuit books are written very well and I know that my child loves them all. This book shows how the little girl and her dog Biscuit prepare for Mother's Day. It is written very well and I would recommend it to anyone with small children.

5 out of 5 stars Right To the Point.......2005-07-28

Another Biscuit holiday flap book that gets right to the point. This time it is Mother's Day and The-Girl-In-Purple-Sneakers and Biscuit are going to make it a special day for Mom and show how much they care. Gifts are made, Mom seeps in, and a special breakfast in bed are just the beginning of Mom's special day.

The book is packed with the typically adorable artwork that has been a backbone to the Biscuit series. The end flaps reveal what Biscuit is up to in his usual puppyish ways. All in all another good holiday book that is attractive and fun to read.

    Book Description

In I Love You Like Crazy Cakes, Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer told the heartfelt story of one woman's adoption a baby girl from China. These sentiments are brought to life again in this touching portrait of birthday celebrations and unforgettable moments between a mother and her little girl: from joyous hugs for a new puppy, to quiet nights gazing at the stars remembering a faraway family. Capturing the richness of both Chinese and American cultures, Every Year on Your Birthday is a poignant tribute to the growing bond of love only a parent and child can know.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book warms the soul.......2007-10-15

I am an elementary school teacher and avid reader of Rose Lewis. Her new book, Every Year on Your Birthday, has brought so much joy to my students-who come from all types of families and backgrounds. That is what I love about Rose Lewis' and illustrator Jane Dyer's work. It strikes a chord with so many children and adults, no matter who they are or where they come from.
My enthusiasm for her work is equaled throughout our school, by teachers and students. We were all so excited for our library to receive a copy of Every Year on Your Birthday, it is rarely on the shelves! I can not say enought about her new book. It is beautifully written, incredibly illustrated, and (from her fans)certainly appreciated!

    5 out of 5 stars Perfectly delightful.......2007-08-01

Once again Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer so perfectly captures an extraordinary aspect of childhood...that being a birthday. The book and the experience of reading it will delight any child and any parent. I loved every word and every picture.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis & Dyer's second gift to the adoption community.......2007-07-29

What a joy to open up that Amazon.com box and see the smiling face of Alexandra Mae-Ming Lewis, daughter of Rose Lewis, starring up at me rendered by Jane Dyer in her familiar and much-loved watercolor illustrations. If you and your little ones enjoyed I Love You Like Crazy Cakes (2000), I think you'll want to take a look at Every Year on Your Birthday.

Aimed at children 4-8 years of age, Every Year on Your Birthday is a sweet, simple and lovely book that illustrates, birthday by birthday, how the lives of Rose Lewis and her daughter have proceeded since they first became entwined in a hotel room in China. I think that many who have adopted from China will be able to identify with both the images and the experiences offered up in the book. For example, with my own girls now 4 and 6, I could identify quite completely with lines like "I think about how quickly your gurgles have turned to giggles." And I was equally moved by Jane Dyer's poignant illustrations showing the little one's progression from toddler to little girl; her illustrations could have been watercolor renderings of many of the snapshots awaiting placement in a scrapbook here at our house!

While Jane Dyer's illustrations were probably my favorite part of the book--I love watercolor and will admit to a particular soft spot for her work--I was also very appreciative of the way the book stayed connected to the child's history before her adoption. For instance, one section of the book celebrates the little girl's relationship with her "first friends," her orphanage "sisters" and those who cared for her in the Social Welfare Institute. And, as was the case in Crazy Cakes, the book offers a remembrance of the child's Chinese birth family, using the idea of looking up at the stars as a point of reference for them and a way to send them good wishes.

With Every Year on Your Birthday Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer have given another gift to the adoption community and to those who wish to better understand the experiences of adoptive families. For some, it will be a way to remind a child of the good time spent; for others, it may be used as a springboard for discussions about birth families and a life before adoption. Either way, it is a beautiful, heartfelt addition to the books on adoption from China.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-27

This book lacks the emotional connection of 'Crazy Cakes.' Nice illustrations, but the story struggles to find its way forward.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Thoughtful Book for Growing Chinese Adoptees.......2007-05-24

I Love You Like Crazy Cakes came out just as I was completing the paperwork for my daughter's adoption, and Every Year on Your Birthday arrived just in time for my daughter's 4th birthday.

When she opened her present, she held up the book and proclaimed, "It's ME!" I can't overemphasize how important seeing other Asian faces is to my daughter-- and our family goes out of its way to ensure that.

The illustrations are beautiful, the sometimes difficult subject matter of orphanage life is treated sensitively, even positively.

I highly recommend this book for Chinese adoptees-- and even other Asian adoptees-- although the content doesn't *quite* match all experiences, it is an excellent starting off point. For example, we talk about what we did on various birthdays, speculate as to how she celebrated her first birthday before she was adopted, how we celebrated her birthdays and GOTCHA days each year. What a wonderful, easy way to begin sometimes difficult conversations.

An excellent addition to any pro-adoption library!

    Book Description

It's December, and Amy can't help but remember the last holiday she spent with her mother. Back then, Amy was training Sundance, the feisty pony they had rescued from an auction. While Sundance had proven to be a talent in the show ring, he was still impossible to handle in the stable. Frustrated by the pony's attitude and her mother's rigorous training schedule, Amy is lacking holiday - and Heartland - spirit. But then, Sundance falls ill. As Amy watches over him, she is finally able to glimpse the vulnerable pony's true heart - and understand the precious gift she shares with her mother.

Hi! I wanted to tell the people that haven't read this book yet that I found it kind of disapointing and boring. I think the only part I really liked was at the end when she got something. I can't tell what it was, though! I also want to say that the whole book was kind of sad. I hated the part were Sundance got colic. My horse got colic, and he was almost about to die, but he just made it! Whenever I read this, that part makes me cry. I like the other books better. But Lauren Brooke, WRITE MORE!!!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!.......2004-12-09

This one was really really good! It gives you an idea of what Amy's mom was really like. It is sad when Sundance gets the colic, but it is really sad knowing amy's mom didn't live that much longer after when the story is based. You can really see how much Amy has improved with the horses since her moms death. A must for Heartland and horse fans.

3 out of 5 stars Heartland Holiday Edition.......2004-12-04

I am absolutely in love with the Heartland series, however, this particular book was a bit of a rude awakening. Not much time was spent in explaining the horses and Amy's time with them, and it was by far the most melodramatic and confusing story yet. I am sure this one is simply one glitch in the Heartland's numerous fascinating stories. I love the rest of 'em, just not quite this one!

Keep readin', writin' and learnin' about horses! They teach us everything!

P.S. Rescue Remedy (r) works on humans and dogs, too, not just horses! I use the Natural Remedy methods at my barn in Duvall, WA.

Written by Eileen Spinelli and illustrated by Lydia Halverson, I Like Noisy Mom Likes Quiet is a lighthearted picturebook about a racoon mother and son. The mother likes quiet activities, such as drying the cat on the porch, and the son loves nothing more than making lots of noise! But one day the noisy boy does his best to tiptoe and whisper all day long, because he wants nothing more than for his mother to enjoy Mother's Day just as she wants. The playful, humorous and finely detailed color illustrations bring this charming family story to life.

    4 out of 5 stars sweet story.......2005-03-05

This is a sweet picture book all about the special bond between a mother and a child. It tells of all the hopes and dreams that a mother has when she brings a child into the world. The book features a mother promising lots of things to her newborn child. She promises to love the child and respect him or her as well.

The illustrations were breathtaking and the babies featured in the book looked so sweet!

I would recommend this book for mothers and young children to read. It has a very positive message.

    5 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring!.......2004-07-16

This is a beautifully written and lovingly illustrated book about the nurturing bond that develops between a mother and child. It is also a book filled with feelings of adoration, which lend themselves to the mystery of that special spirit known as life.

When I first noticed that David Danioth had illustrated this book, I knew right away that it would be beautifully done. Mr. Danioth's talent knows no bounds. Then, as I read A Mother's Promise, my heart was filled with a tenderness that is hard to explain. This feeling of sensitivity and softness was enhanced by the stunning illustrations, which were so realistic that I wanted to reach my fingers out to caress the baby's tiny face.

While preparing to bring new life into the world, mothers everywhere whisper promises to their unborn child. They know that the world can be a perilous place, with unknown terrors, but promises that come directly from an adoring heart become inspiring and hopeful messages of love.

*****This awe-inspiring book is guaranteed to stir memories in the heart of every mother, and will become a treasure that can be handed down to every child.*****

    Book Description

Celebrate the life passages shared only between mothers and daughters in this uniquely moving collection.

Mothers and Daughters reveals the full breadth and depth of the mother-daughter bond as only poetry can. From pregnancy to toddlerhood, adolescence to leaving home, grandmotherhood and beyond, and every passage in between, this collection captures the voices of mothers and daughters as they write about the most moving moments of their times together.

Honest, inspiring, joyful, and reflective, the full range of women's voices has been captured here: the inexplicable joy of a mother holding her baby girl, a mom witnessing the first grown-up tears of her adolescent girl, a mother watching her daughter walk down the aisle, a ten-year-old trying to explain to her mom why she hates broccoli, and a daughter saying good-bye to her mother in her new dorm room. All the poetry, selected by bestselling author June Cotner, is accessible and beautifully crafted, alternating poems that will move any mother or daughter to tears with others that will make her laugh out loud--and all of which will deepen the reader's understanding and appreciation of this unique bond as no self-help book ever could.

5 out of 5 stars Mothers and Daughters: A poetry Celebration.......2001-04-25

My heart's joy and ecstasy, it's wrenching pain and bittersweet memories have been captured in ink and put before the world. Expect to be transported through a kaleidoscope of moods, feelings and memories. Your mother, your daughter, your experiences as a daughter and as a mother - all will accompany you on this poignantly presented journey to the soul of womanhood. June Cotner has created an absolutely lovely book for women - sweet without being overly sentimental.

5 out of 5 stars The Beauty of the Tie That Binds.......2001-04-17

In her powerful anthology MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS: A POETRY CELEBRATION June Cotner gives her readers a heart opening look into our first and probably most defining relationship. Mothers, daughters, grandparents (and sons and husbands who want to gain an intimate understanding of the women in their lives) will be enlightened and entertained by this thoughtful, generous collection.

The poems flow as naturally as the time periods they describe: pregnancy, babyhood, birth, childhood, adolescence, leaving home, adulthood and so on into such meaningful territory as partings, reflections and inspiration. No aspect of the mother-daughter bond is neglected, no emotion untouched. Incredible attention is paid to pacing and placement encouraging the reader to move seamlessly from one piece to the next, difficult to resist the pull of the following chapter even as daily obligations would call us away.

Reading these poems is a gift to oneself; the treasure of insights so artfully crafted into literature links us with the humanity of others while it illuminates our own experiences in revealing ways. So many times the people closest to us are the ones we have the hardest time sharing our authentic feelings with and so much of importance goes unsaid. By all means buy this book for your mother, daughter, or maybe, most importantly, yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Too scary for children!.......2003-04-27

Though I like the idea of this book, as well as the talent behind the illustrations, after reading this to my children and seeing their anxiety about the huge, menacing black cat that scares the mice, my husband and I have decided not to read this anymore to them. The mouse family is sweet, and the intent of the story is admirable, with the littlest mouse giving his mother a thoughtful gift for Mother's Day. I understand that most plots have some type of conflict that is resolved, but we discovered that the cat in this book was too scary for young children. There is a full-page illustration of this cat's scary face and head which is unnecessary, I believe, to make this story a success. We absolutely love reading stories to our children, and in fact, don't watch T.V. as we want books to be a bigger part of their lives. I understand that some people value exposing their children to scariness in books as a way to explain these things in the safety of their home, but sometimes images can remain in a child's mind for a long time, and if it comes from a contrived situation, such as in a fictional story, the child may find it harder to reconcile within the context of real life. We found that our children had a hard time appreciating the point of the story, because they were too thrown by the big, black cat. These happen to be children who live on a farm and have a pet cat themselves! They've dealt with real-life "scariness" such as the death of animals, nearby sightings of bears, foxes and other wild animals...etc., but all of these fit within the context of their lives. I books, they seem to appreciate images and text that work well together-in this case, the cat is bigger than life.

Favorite characters: Biggest Little Mouse, Middle Mouse, Little Mouse, and Mother

This book is about three mice who want to each get their mother a gift for Mother's Day. Each mouse wants to get the best gift, but it ends up being the littlest mouse who gets her the most unusual gift of all.
A nice book illustrated with colorful pictures that show these three little mice along their journey for presents. A nice story that shows how to share your love for your mother on Mother's Day.

    5 out of 5 stars The Mother's Day Mice.......2003-03-12

I thought that this story is an excellent story for young children and their mothers to read together. This story about three, cute little mice is precious. They want to find the perfect present for their mother. The Little Mouse is the sweetest character I have read about in a while. They pass some dangerous situations as they search the meadow for the gifts. The surprise at the end of the story will make you so happy, that'll you'd do that for your mother! The story is a very cute story to read, especially around Mother's Day. The illustrations in it are very, very well done and the mice are the cutest mice ever!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Wonderful Gift!.......2002-11-01

This is another heart warming story. It shows how much love there is for family and what family will do to do something special for the people they love. The mice were searching for special gifts for Mother Mouse on Mother's day..... and Little Mouse found the most wonderful gift of all!!! I think it's a very sweet book on how much family will do for each other. It tells what the little mice had to do to get their mother their own special present for a special day.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Present of All.......2002-06-28

Big Mouse, Middle Mouse and Little Mouse (shades of the 3 bears) are so excited about Mother's Day that they are up two hours early. They hurry outside to find their parents. Little wants to give Mother a spray of honeysuckle, but Cat is sleeping on the porch of Honeysuckle Cottage. Soon it's too late to pick the flowers, so the mice hurry home. Little is sad because he has no gift for Mother, but soon he thinks of the very best present of all.

Beautifully illustrated, with rich and tender prose, this book is a special one with a lovely message about a gift that lives forever.
