Book Description

Packed with trade secrets and inventive cleaning solutions, it goes through the house room by room, offering doÂ's and donÂ'ts, step-by- steps, and before-and-after Âgrime scene photographs.
Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie are known as Âthe queens of clean from Lifetime Television and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Tips include:
Use a banana peel to dust plants; the dust clings to the skin and the juice nourishes the leaves
Leave laundry detergent to soak in your bathtub overnightÂthe tub will gleam in the morning (no scrubbing required)
To loosen dirt and grease inside the microwave, put a few slices of lemon in an uncovered bowl of water and cook on high for 3 minutes.

Good Book.......2007-10-14
I love the show and was disappointed that Lifetime no longer shows it but BBC still doesn
The book is great. I have learned a few things that I have never seen on the show.
Just makes you want to get up and clean something! .......2007-10-02
Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie tackle some of the messiest houses on two continents, and they do it with humor and style. Just because you're elbow deep in muck is no reason not to look elegant! (I especially like their glamorously trimmed rubber gloves.)
This terrific companion book to the TV series, "How Clean Is Your House," isn't a comprehensive guide on how to clean anything and everything. It's just a fun little book with hundreds of tips from Kim and Aggie. It's hard to keep reading though - you keep wanting to get up and dust something!
The chapter called "Getting Started" includes both ladies' preferences for putting together an essential cleaning kit. Kim and Aggie prefer simple, easily available things like white vinegar, salt, baking soda, lemons, laundry soap - even denture cleaning tablets. It's amazing how common items and a little elbow grease work miracles if you know when and where to use them.
Other chapters offer advice on Kitchens, Living Rooms, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Pets and Allergies.
These ladies really know how to motivate people and make cleaning fun!

Love These Ladies!.......2007-09-19
Excellent book, makes me want to clean my house! I like that they use so many common household supplies (lemons, baking soda, vinegar, etc.) instead of commercial chemicals.
Hip, Funny and Helpful.......2007-08-18
Gotta love these two old British biddies with their "Oh my gawds" style of speaking. Their show is grand and the book is not bad. One of my peeves is on the show they use the term "biological powder" but never tell you what that is. A friend says it's "Fab" but that's just detergent, right? The girls don't mention what biological powder is in their book nor own their website. This is frustrating. Other than that, it's a good romp about how to clean your house - start in the bedroom first! - and move to the front (or bottom) of the house. Super advice. Good writing. Nice presentation. Lots of colorful photos.
How much happier a clean house makes you........2007-08-10
Kim and Aggie change lives- If you have never seen the TV show, these women go into homes that should rightfully be condemned, clean them from top to bottom, and return them to the owners with stern warnings to "keep it clean". The book is an extension of this fantastic show that literally transforms people's lives. One can easily underestimate how much cleanliness and order contributes to a happy life. This book is a great guide to achieving and maintaining such order. The cleaning tips and methods are smart and easy and the cleaning solutions they use made from borax, salt, vinegar, baking soda, lemon to name a few are "cheap and cheerful". Cleaning made fun.

Helpful hints indeed!.......2006-03-22
This book is surprisingly fun. You name it and this book has a tip on the most effective way to do it. I bought this book in conjunction with two other home maintenance and repair books and it has many items that were not covered in the other two. I only gave it three stars because I will probably only refer to this one after the other two to verify that there isn't an easier way. What would make this book better? I say combine this book with their "New Fix-It-Yourself Manual" (my top choice), and you have an ace book!
This book is amazing........2002-01-15
I have not bought this book...yet. I recently borrowed it from the library, and will keep renewing it until they force me to return it. When they do, I intend on hunting it down at my neighborhood bookstore.
This book is very comprehensive for the do-it-yourselfer that is just starting out, and contains many neat tips and tricks that even the expert handyman would not have known. The book is extremely useful for everyday stuff, and even has instructions on those once a year fix-it items.
The book is arranged in different categories, such as Lawn & Garden, Plumbing, Electrical Appliances, with subcategories like pruning, toilets, and washer/dryer. About half of each page is covered with colorful handrawn pictures that apply to the tips listed. Most tips don't have pictures, but these are usually ones that don't require them. The other half of the page contains detailed instructions on how to replace/repair/install items of importance. These instructions have real pictures of the process, and are wonderful for reference.
I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a home. Once you buy it, read everything once so you'll know what's in there, then put it in an accessible place so you can grab it at a moments notice.
Excellent source of clever ideas and tips.......1999-10-21
While not a comprehensive home repair guide (superficial instructions and difficult to see and poorly labeled photos and diagrams), this book is a useful addition to a home repair library. When tackling a home repair, the book provides numerious time-saving and result enhancing suggestions on how to make the job go more smooothly with a higher quality outcome.

As a single parent and homeowner, I can't tell you how handy this book has been. If you don't have a friend, relative or spouse who's a handyman, you definitely need this book. I've been able to save enough money to furnish my home. I've purchased many of the Reader's Digest books in the past and found them to be of high quality and excellent value. This book contains step-by-step procedures and instructions that are depicted in numbered color photos that makes easy work of repairs and maintenance-plus you are assured it's done right.

*****Pleased By Content*****!.......2007-09-19
Small book but packed with loads of information. Mostly common sense stuff I think but we wouldnt be buying this book if we were doing those things to keep our house uncluttered! I suggest this book to anyone! I enjoy it !
Unclutter Your Home: 7 Simple Steps, 700 Tips & Ideas (Simplicity Series).......2005-08-03

Seven steps to unclutter your home.......2004-10-25
An easy to read format with several tips/ideas on each page covering all the clutter zones with suggested systems to simplify your home.
Each idea is presented in a paragraph format, about three sentences with basic details. The book consists of 176 pages of these ideas with seven to ten on each page with many being similar and pretty basic in concept. There are some tips that are used for more than one room, so when another room is discussed this tip is presented again with examples.
I think if someone stopped and tried to come up with ideas for how to organize their house they would easily have the format for this book, because it read like many thoughts jotted down in sentence form.
Many of the tips make sense and may be overlooked when trying to tackle the task of uncluttering years worth of collections and junk. Finish one room before attempting another, for every new item brought into the home toss out five items, plan activities around garbage day.
There are a few tips and recommendations that I did not agree with or really understand the need. When going through your home to decipher what is clutter, think in terms that each item is sacrificing space. The question to ponder is do you want the space for this clutter or for breathing space. The tips are presented with suggestions, but I did not get the sense that the author has done all these steps due to the lack of personalization to these ideas.
Unclutter your home: 7 Simple Steps, 700 Tips & Ideas is a quick read, good for someone who might need a push in this direction and certainly a wise investment for someone to kick in their new year resolution come holiday time. Most of this is just common sense and not too difficult to begin the process. I had time to kill while at the library and wanted to see what I might have overlooked when arranging my house.
Ok, color me surprised but it *works*!.......2003-04-11
Although a lot of these ideas boil down to common sense, (open the mail each day as it arrives and while standing next to the recycle bin, for instance) I do have to say that reading this book inspired me to do some *SERIOUS* uncluttering. I've only owned it a month and in that time I think I've thrown out, sold, or donated about two dumpsters worth of things I was holding onto for all the wrong reasons. For the first time I'm enjoying getting rid of things, and making room to actually have places to put things away. Let's just say I used to browse for costume jewely in online auctions, but now I drool over storage accessories. Sigh. (Another lifelong clutterbug bites the dust.) In short: yes, I'd have to say that the book was very helpful, at least in providing that intial kick-start that so many of us pack rats need.
Unclutter Your Home.......2001-10-26
I found this book to be very helpful. There were many ideas that are really just common sense but you need someone to point them out to you. For example, just the idea that everything has a place and mail once opened never goes into a pile, but gets filed or thrown out. My piles are now a lot less. There are many other great tips and ideas and it is sometimes helpful to hear things over again. It is also one of those books that you can pick up when you just have a few minutes and get something out of it.

Customer Reviews:
Dear Sister, the book saved me lots of time and headache..........2003-05-24
Dear Sandra,
Thanks for lending me Fodor's How to Pack book! Having never been abroad before, I had a lot to learn and didn't even know it. I'm going to have to get a copy of this book for myself, especially for the checklists of "Basic Wardrobe Options for Women," ditto for men, and what to put into a first aid kit, laundry kit, sewing kit, toiletries kit, etc. I read the sections on packing for cruises, mountain trips, hot and cold weather, and adventure trips even though I wasn't going to use them for this vacation, just because they were interesting and I kept picking up the stray tip. (Thank goodness I don't have to use their advice on traveling with children!)
The sections on what to wear on the plane, what to pack in one's carry-on (as well as reminders of what NOT to pack), food for the journey, and how to pack luggage that will be checked in were extremely useful. Who would have thought to pack clothes in those plastic bags from dry cleaners to keep items from wrinkling?? I'm trying it and will let you know how it works out. They also talk about the different philosophies of packing -- the "roll" style that is especially good for duffel bags, vs. the "interlock" style where you stack layers and then fold them all together to decrease wrinkling.
On the down side, the book seemed padded and too chatty, when, being the procrastinator that I am, I needed to get the information right away. But I was able to find it, and someone could just use the many helpful checklists and be way ahead of the game, as I was. And there were things I never thought about, such as compiling a "personal documents" file to put in my carry-on, with a copy of my passport and driver's license and a photo of my luggage in case it got lost.
Altogether I found this a must-read for either the procrastinator or the unseasoned traveler such as yours truly. Thanks for caring enough to send me this book!
Best wishes,
-H

Not what I expected.......2006-08-08
Sadly, this book spends more time being funny than it does offering sound advice and instructions for actual home maintenance. If I had bought it for entertainment purposes, it would have been great, but I got it to help me care for my home...something it doesn't do.

more than satisfied.......2007-05-08
I purchased this item for my daughter. She first used it at the half-way house where she is a care-taker for three young men. She wanted a copy of the book for herself so she could try out different recipes at home. She uses it a lot.
Fantastic Resource.......2005-05-27
I have thoroughly enjoyed going through this book. I have not been able to try everything, but what I have tried works. The book is written so that it is easy to follow. There are hundreds and hundreds of "recipes" and tips which can be used to remedy any number of situations around the house/yard/garden. The best thing is that most of the ingredients were already in my kitchen cabinet - at least for the things that I've wanted to try so far. I also appreciate that this book provides alternative methods to the use of hazardous chemicals/pesticides. Additionally, this book provides a wonderful offering of recipes for self-care (pampering) such as lotions and tonics, and hair and skin care. Even if you've never even THOUGHT about making your own "stuff," this book will introduce you to any number of concoctions that you can have fun experimenting with. I highly recommend this book... have fun seeing what works for you!
Book Description
Clean smarter, not harder! That's Donna Smallin's cleaning motto, and now she shows readers how to do it in just minutes a day. The One-Minute Cleaner Plain & Simple is the perfect handbook for busy people who might never find the time for a top-to-bottom household scrub, but do want to keep their living areas clean, sanitary, and clutter-free.
Two broad sections, Ready, Set, Clean! and Challenges Inside and Out, cover every cleaning situation the reader is likely to face. Room by room, challenge by challenge, Smallin's handy tips keep dirt and grime at bay. A few minutes each day is such a small price to pay!
Customer Reviews:
It's Not Torture..........2007-06-08
This book appeals to me because it is written in such a way that you can really get something accomplished. Smallin encourages "a clean house, one small task at a time." And, she is encouraging, because her attitude is that cleaning--for her anyway--is therapeutic, not torture (as I have previously thought). This change in attitude came, for me, from using the Flylady techniques, which also encourage housecleaning a bit at a time. Previously I would have thought that it would never work--there was way too much to do. But, broken down into little steps, housework is not that overwhelming.
The author gives many different approaches to cleaning--seasonal, day by day, special occasion. It's like a smorgasbord of cleaning systems you can pick and choose from, according to what works for you.
I liked this book and would recommend it to my daughters or anyone who wants a clean house but doesn't want to spend all day getting it.
It seems to be, though, a condensed version of the author's other, larger book called "Cleaning Plain and Simple". If you want the shorter, compact version, get this one. If you want a more thorough book that goes into more depth of cleaning how-to's , then I'd recommend the other one. They are good in their own right, but you don't need to purchase both of them (as I did!), thinking this one was filled with ideas on how to clean something in one minute (I wish). It takes one minute or less to read the page and then it takes, well, whatever it takes you, to get the job done.

This book first came out in 1988 and has been in my general "how-to" library ever since. Updated and reprinted in 1994, it is still one of the most extensive household help books I know. It has tips on organizing your home, cleaning, repairing things, gardening, caring for pets, even record-keeping and decorating! Well organized, well indexed, and easy to use, this book is packed with a whole lot of information on practical matters of living, and you'll find yourself keeping it within easy reach!
Book Description
More than 4000 time-saving and cost-saving tips for everyday life. Packed with shortcuts, practical advice, ingenious ideas, how-to information, and more than 1000 illustrations, all designed to save time and trouble.

Truly Lives Up To The Title.......2005-01-28
This is a great book - perfect for reading cover-to-cover or just the areas you want to read. Illustrations are helpful and are very clear. If you're trying to become more organized or want to save time, you need to get this book! And....it would be a great wedding or housewarming book, too.
Everything you need to know in one handy volume!.......2000-07-01
While I'm embarrased to admit it, this is the volume I consulted last week to figure out how to sew a button back onto one of my shirts. It also includes all those annoying laundry symbols you can never remember, food preparation tips, pet care, how to organize your life, and first aid instructions. The answer to pretty much any household question you have can be found in this book. It would make a perfect gift for a son or daughter who's leaving home for the first time.
a book that lives up to its title.......2000-03-29
finally, a book that actually delivers all the information it promises to in its title. this is the most comprehensive household hint book i have read (and i am constantly aiming to improve my household skills}. so far, this book has provided relevant tips for my entire house renovation and when both the fridge and oven and washing machine broke down the same week it saved me countless electrician bills. by providing clear guidelines how to identify the problem and even instructions how to fix simple breakdowns.the text is concise and easy enough to understand - even my husband is using it as a reference (and he never has patience to consult any book). all in all, i would consider this a perfect book for the new house or apartment dweller or even a more experienced one could cull some valuable information here.

Very straightforward advice.......2006-08-22
This author's advice is direct and simple and seems very good for getting the reader started immediately on organizing. Highly recommended.
"Satan,get thee behind me!".......2006-01-10
If you're anything like me,you've been fighting clutter all your adult life.Reading about how to control clutter to me is like reading recipes is to my wife. After all this reading we'll look at each other and say,"Let's go to the Mall, and then out to eat."Although newspapers and magazines are continually carrying articles about clutter, they're as common as those on energy conservation. The best book I've come across, several years ago, was "Clutter's Last Stand" by Don Aslett(see my review of December 29,2005).Despite my best intentions and efforts Clutter still stands.
When I came across Adler's book, and already having been familar with his other book,"Outwitting Squirrels",I thought it would be well worth reading. Both of these books are to the point, totally all encompassing, full of humor and will describe both you and your cluttering instincts to a tee.Whether reading this book will help you turn your habits around or will become another addition to the 'pile' ,all depends on you.So what's new about raising Hell on Saturday nite and reading the Bible come Sunday morning?Anyway, you gotta keep trying, just think how it would be if you didn't try.I am reminded of Larry McMurtry's novel "Cadallic Jack" and the old fellow who had his house stuffed with bird nests he had collected over the years.
I'll give you a little personal example.I came into a small collection of matchbooks and have no interest in them.Come to think of it I hardly see them anymore.I have offered them to several, but to date no takers. Now is the time to take advice from my title.Get rid of them!
The one big thing that comes into play with clutter is that it definately involves those we live with.Somebody elses clutter is a lot more easier to get rid of than your oun.Now if you want to really declare war on it,exchange control over one anothers clutter. However;one should also discuss divorce expenses before embarking on a War on Clutter..If you think Bush bit off a big one with his War on Terror, you're in for a biiiig surprise!
Don't loose heart completely.Just like his book shows how you can still continue to feed backyard birds and still live in peace with squirrels,he gives some of the same help in living with clutter. If all else fails, organized clutter beats disorganized clutter every time.My wife and I have declared two areas in our home off limits over clutter.I have half of the basement for my 7000 books, puzzle and other collections and she 3 closets and a bedroom,as a result of empty-nesting,for her treasures. The rest of the house is neat as a pin and off limits to clutter.
I think the best laugh in this book is where Bill talks about the clutter of hair shampoo and and conditioners ..check out 151.
while most advice on clutter deals with getting rid of clutter;Adler takes it a step further and gives some good suggestions on how to manage it,if you can't eliminate it all together.
While Adler gives us a great war cry,"Don't bring it home";an old friend of mine gave me this piece of wisdom,"Every thing you get, takes looking after."
Hilarious and Helpful.......2003-05-17
Bill Adler, Jr. is hilarious. If you don't get anything but a good laugh from this book, it's worth it. He has a great sense of humor and he knows how to make decluttering fun and lighthearted. He gives good tips and a different insight which you may or may not agree with(choose and use those which you think will work for you). I have read a lot of material on decluttering and organizing and this book was still helpful, enlightening, and just plain fun to read.
