Fundamentals!.......2007-09-30
This book is so simple and concise. I homeschool my (currently) 1st and 3rd grader with this book, and it is laid out so well, it makes teaching the basics of Art so easy! One of those cases where I found exactly what I was looking for and it has been a huge source of help. Great for all ages and easy to plan around, too.
great for homework pages.......2007-09-15
This book is very straight forward and has some great ideas to present the 7 elements to younger kids. The easily reproduceable worksheets which accompany each lesson are excellent for kids and parents to expound on such things as the color wheel at home.
Great book to teach art.......2007-08-29
This is a great book that teaches art to children. The lessons are easy to follow, don't take alot of preparation, and teach the fundamentals of art.
Handy resource.......2007-08-25
I purchased this book for some new ideas for art activities in the college class I teach for elementary education majors. It is nicely arranged by formal art elements with clear, concise directions. While it has worthwhile classroom activities, those concise directions can be a bit thin for most teachers that don't have any art background, unless they are the more motivated type that will do some deeper study into the art elements and principles covered in the National Visual Arts Standards. The one other problem is in the examples pictured in the book, which are obviously done by an adult, and not very imaginative uses of the lessons. Real-live kids would give far better effort than is pictured throughout the text.
Overall, this is a nice resource for the classroom teacher.
How to Teach Art to Children.......2007-08-15
This book is set up in a logical order and has some pretty good ideas. There are some helpful and interesting little blurbs noted about famous artists that I believe students will find interesting. Also, there's a helpful list of simplified definitions on the elements of art. Each section is broken down into experiences for large-group, small-group, individuals, and centers. I teach 5 different grade levels and was hoping the book would break the activities into age-appropriate categories. Nevertheless, I believe this will be a helpful book with some useful ideas.

Parenting Plus.......2006-11-12
I was disappointed in this book. I was looking for a book that would encourage average elementary students to improve their typing skills. Instead I encountered a pyrotechnic display of a very exceptional seven year old's imagination. I wish Adora luck in her fiction writing, but examples of letter writing or report writing would be more helpful to average students. Most of the third and fourth graders at my school do not have the vocabulary to follow Adora's flights of fantasy.
"A child Shall Lead them".......2006-07-11
I am so impressed with the humility, joy and delight of Adora, and the devoted attention her mother gave her. It not only is a book about inspiring other children to put their thoughts into written word, but a grand tool for anyone teaching our youth....Then there is the inspiration of calling all mothers to teach, instruct and inspire their children. I am sharing this book with a couple of teachers. I am 71 years young. I will look forward to seeing where Adora goes in her future. Peggy Lippitt
Great book.......2006-07-08
This book was great, the writting tips were helpful, and the stories were very good. I'd also like to add that the other review made by Leelikah is a bit rediculous. She wrote that Adora's writting was "childish and stupid" however Miss Leelikah must not know much about the author considering she was only SEVEN when she wrote the book! Now I understand you called yourself an aspiring author, and good for you but I'm sure you didn't have any book published when you turned 8! Adora is talented, she was reading chapter books by the time she was 3! Not many people can say that they were able to do that. So before writting a review for the book and calling the author childish and stupid it would probably help if you knew what you were talking about.
Flying Fingers-A Teacher's Viewpoint.......2006-03-18
I have been consistently disappointed in my search for creative writing teaching tools for children. They tend to be condescending or banal, with few fresh ideas. Flying Fingers: Master the Tools of Learning Through the Joy of Writing proves to be an exception. A collection of lively stories by prodigy author Adora Svitak, Flying Fingers includes key vocabulary, creative writing exercises, exercises designed to improve basic writing skills, and an extensive guide for parents and educators. Adora's co-author, Joyce Svitak, has a refreshing stance on education, espousing a strong belief that most children are capable of much better writing-it's just a matter of tapping into their creativity and changing your own perceptions of their potential. For a teacher, this alone is an incredibly uplifting message; backed up by step-by-step directions and innovative exercises, it's a vital strategy.
Flying Fingers-A Great Teaching Tool.......2006-03-18
My children have been much more interested in writing since they saw Adora's appearance on Good Morning America, and I was thrilled that her first book included both stories and writing tips. Pairing the two together gives children a tangible example of what they can achieve, accompanied by tools to help them on their path. Adora's stories are quite humorous and entertaining in and of themselves (even for adult readers), and, with the accompanying `strategies for parents and educators' and `fun exercises for kids' segments, they make great learning tools. Since my children began reading Lemony Snicket, I have been trying to find more stories that include definitions of key vocabulary. The Flying Fingers glossary surpasses anything I have found so far; with words like scurrilous and ribald, Adora's vocabulary selection is lively enough to keep young readers interested.

Expanding simple sentences with ease and humor.......2007-09-08
I am a credentialed teacher who now tutors only. I bought this book primarily for ESL students who were learning to write in English. My three ESL students this past summer had very well-developed English vocabularies, but found it hard to put their ideas into English writing. Creating "Super Sentences" was a major help.
I also introduced the book to native English writers in grades 2-4. The book helped them see how they could easily vary their sentences by changing the position of some of the "formula" parts.
I then took the book one step further. After each lesson was finished, we cut and saved all of the suggested phrases in a personal reference book. I highly recommend the book to parents and teachers who are helping children grow beyond simple three word sentences.
Also, the book does flow well into the recommended partner, Fabulous Paragraphs.

just look at the sample.......2007-04-18
This is a "formula" sentence book, and you can see the formula in the sample (there is only 1). At the back of the book, are center activities, which might make this the only reason you would purchase this book.
Worthwhile Purchase.......2005-06-13
I purchased this book to use with second graders (many of whom are in the process of learning English). I have found the activities to be useful in assisting students in assembling grammatically correct extended sentences. The kids also have a great time coming up with funny sentence parts. This is a good book to purchase if you're looking for a short daily exercise to assist students with sentence construction.

Customer Reviews:
Babies need OLD, classic, Living books........2005-10-14
This is a wonderful book for many reasons. First, like other wonderful resources of its kind such as "Honey for a Child'd Heart" and "Books Children Love" it talks about the importance and the joy of sharing books with your children, with a special emphasis on the 5 and under set. It inspires and motivates you to spend time sharing books with your small children, something many people might not think is important at all, or at least not until they're old enough to talk or understand the story. But as this book explains, the earlier children are exposed to great literature, the better.
And that is the key - "great literature" - and what makes this book so special. So much of what is being written now-a-days is "Twaddle" and not worth reading to our children. A very large percentage of the thousands of books we've bought for our family's homeschool collection over the years has been older books - usually the older the better. In fact, the copywright date is the first thing I look at when trying to decide if a book is worth buying for my kids. We do have newer books, too, but the older ones are usually our favorites.
Most of the books listed in this guide are what Charlotte Mason calls "Living Books" - stuff to feed the minds, imaginations, and souls of our children. Yes, they may be harder to find, even at the library because sadly, libraries are getting rid of more and more of the good stuff to make room for the highly marketed garbage being passed off as children's literature today. But you can still find some of them through Amazon's used booksellers and other places and they're well worth getting whenever you can. But you have to know WHAT to buy and since they're not widely available this book helps by giving you titles and descriptions to go by.
It was because of some of these "hard to find, older books" that I found THIS book in fact. I stumbled across a book called "Dogger" in a closeout bookstore for $3.00 and as soon as I read it I knew I had found a real treasure. I went back to buy more for gifts but they were sold out so, of course I checked Amazon. I found out that it was out of print and then discovered that the author, Shirley Hughes, had written many, many similar books but that they were mostly out of print, too. I bought a few from Amazon and we found each one to be more delightful than the next, though "Dogger" is still our favorite. So I started searching for any book by Shirley Hughes I could find and I came across this book, because it was illustrated by Shirley Hughes. Being a book-a-holic, especilally on the topic of anything to do with homeschooling, I had to buy it and I found it to be an incredible gem, just like the children's books that led me to it. It inspires and motivates you with why you should read to your baby and how much you'll BOTH enjoy it and describes what makes a good book at each age level and is full of suggestions of wonderful books to look for. It's done in a conversational tone, like a grandmother or old friend and full of anecdotes of real babies and their family members and their experiances with books that make you think "I want that experience for MY baby, too."
Wonderful book - get it while you can before IT'S replaced by more Twaddle!
A Great Guide that Won't Overwhelm You! Her Selections Work.......2004-01-21
Reading "Babies Need Books" is almost like having a conversation with a sage older neighbor or friend. Unlike tomes that list 20 billion books for each age group, this guide
pares down the selections for the 0-6s into brief and chatty chapters that get you excited about reading. It's nice to read a guide that's personal, filled with annecdotes and opinions. But best of all, her picks work! Without fail, every book I've read that Butler reccomends has been a hit with my child.
While it is true that many of the books are on the older side (it would be wonderful if there was a new edition), I have to say, I kind of like that fact that some of the books are off the beaten path. I could find most of them at Amazon or in the library, and their sometimes retro illustrations and antiquated language make them all the more interesting. I think it's good for kids to see different visual styles as well as to hear different types of language use.
Butler is also not afraid to give opinions on what not to read (see her comments on Richard Scary and "educational" books). For these reasons, and others, I give "Babies Need Books" an enthusiastic 5 stars!
The title says it all!.......2001-06-05
A girlfriend sent Babies Need Books to me when my son was already six months old - thankfully we had been reading to him since his birth - but Dorothy Butler's facts, anecdotes and recommendations only served to strengthen our commitment to reading as a family. Now 17 months old, our son routinely brings us books, sits in our lap and waits for us to begin reading. Friends and family members have commented on his behaviour and deemed it exceptional for his age - not according to Dorothy! The reviews that indicate the recommended reading lists are out of date are missing the point in my mind. Yes some of the books are not easy to find, but we have found almost all of them, and the concepts contained therein are the meat of the lists in any event. A must have for people hoping to impart a love of reading to their children.
Babies need books.......2001-01-27
I have to disagree with the reviewer who wrote that this book is "Great on theory; poor research on books", October 26, 1999. Dorothy Butler first became interested in children's literature while teaching English at a secondary school. All the books reviewed in "Babies need books" have been read to her 8 children and then her 17 grandchildren over many many years. Dorothy Butler's selection has nothing to do with theory but years of reading aloud to children. Many of the books reviewed have become classics. Most out of print can be found at a good library. If you love reading to your children this is one book I'd definitely recommend.
Essential for new parents.......2000-08-08
This book is a great firestarter for parents of infants. It shows how important the reading process is and it also points out how easy it is for parents to read to their babies. Dorothy Butler does a wonderful job with this topic and proves herself a knowing expert who can impart information to a group that is often overwhelmed with advice -- new parents.

âFrom the Foreword by Marilou Hyson
Stimulate childrenâs love of learning while meeting standards and benchmarks!
Teachers today are often challenged by and concerned about the expectations in states' early learning standards. They have questions about their appropriateness, implementation, and tendency to overlook the needs of the growing number of children who are second language learners or who have disabilities and developmental delays. In
Play, Projects, and Preschool Standards, authors Gera Jacobs and Kathy Crowley tackle these questions (and more!) head-on, providing teachers with plenty of lively, creative ideas to develop children's genuine curiosity while building the skills they'll need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.
In inviting, informal language, the authors walk readers through the creation of well-planned projects and activities that both capture children's interest and enhance social and pre-academic development. Each chapter offers:
- "What Research and the Experts Say" snapshots, and applications of the research in practice
- "Try This" activity ideas that engage children and meet standards
- Suggestions for tailoring activities to meet the needs of bilingual children and children with special needs
This timely book is sure to give teachers the confidence and competence they need to connect the experiences that make preschool so enjoyable with the skill development that makes preschool so necessary.

One of my favourite parenting books!.......2004-11-26
This is one of my favourite parenting books, along with other books by the same authors. What I really like about it is that the book focuses on prevention and on how to raise children, not just what to do when there are problems. I highly recommend this book!
A wonderful book for parents of pre-schoolers........1999-09-15
This book has truely helped me understand my two year old. I have learned to appreciate the simple joys he finds in his life, and I have learned to let him enjoy them. I read this book last week and have since put these principles into action. I have noticed a significant difference in everyone's attitudes.

It's easy to get stuck in an unpleasant parenting rut--daily frustrations have a way of building walls between kids and parents that lead to ineffective communication and further frustrations. Sometimes an objective step back and a fresh set of reminders are just the ticket to get family life back on track.
A welcome combination of theory and practical suggestions, The Encouraging Parent first presents a general overview of typical parenting systems of punishment and reward. Examples like "If you make straight A's, I'll give you fifty dollars" and "You will sit here all night if it takes that long" may be embarrassingly familiar to some readers, but not to worry; author Rod Kennedy promises that he is out to break the cycle of blame for all involved.
He proceeds to do just that by showing surprisingly simple suggestions for discipline that is effective and loving at the same time. Practical ideas are listed with bullet points, followed by short explanations, a definite boon for busy parents who find their reading time to be limited. Lists cover topics like "verbal bombs to avoid," "nine characteristics of the emotionally mature parent," and personal traits of responsible people. Lots of real-life stories are included from the author's personal experiences, and these stories serve nicely to illustrate the 14 different communication skills Kennedy feels are necessary for good parenting. One short tale of his wife's bad day that is greeted with "start from the beginning and tell me everything," instead of "you think you had a bad day," is an easy lesson that can make a world of difference in an exhausted family. If you're ready to make a few positive changes at home, The Encouraging Parent is an excellent place to start. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Would you like to end temper tantrums, sibling rivalry, and other unacceptable behavior without resorting to threats, shouting, or spanking?
Let Dr. Rod Kennedy show you how to become an Encouraging Parent.
Remember that time when you were down on your knees, holding out your arms, and shouting out encouragement as your toddler took those first steps? When your child stumbled and fell, you didn't shout, spank, or reprimand -- you smiled, soothed, encouraged. You motivated your child to succeed. You can recapture that positive and effective attitude and harness it to raise a confident, self-disciplined, and happy child. The first step is to realize that the problem isn't how to "fix" your child, it's to understand how your own attitudes and beliefs get in the way of effective parenting, then learn how to fine-tune your emotional and communication skills.
Based on his popular workshops, which have trained more than 100,000 parents, Dr. Kennedy's book contains a wealth of practical information on how to teach kids self-discipline. Topics include:
¸ A self-test to help pinpoint where you need to refine your parenting skills
¸ Establishing daily routines that are easy to remember-- and that will end the chaos
¸ Teaching kids to get along and resolve their own conflicts so you don't have to micromanage
¸ Real-life parenting lessons from the parents who attend Dr. Kennedy's workshops
This warm, empathetic, and practical guide will help you nurture your child's positive development and create the loving, supportive atmosphere all kids need to thrive.

Dr. Kennedy's methods really work!.......2004-02-07
I was fortunate enough to hear Dr. Kennedy speak at my church and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only were his ideas practical and down-to-earth, but the goal is to raise joyful and self-disciplined children. The techniques worked very well with my two children and allowed for their very different temperments. I have read many parenting books and I would list this one among the best.
After attending the seminar, I read the book. It provided an easy-to-read format with lots of bullet items listing the key points. This is valuable when you need to go back and quickly find some advice for a particular situation. I also found it very helpful that Dr. Kennedy readily (and hysterically) admits some of the mistakes that he has made when raising his 5 children. He is very accessible in person as well as through his writing.
If you are looking for a book that will result in a more peaceful home and more joyful time with your family, read this book! You and your children will benefit from this Biblically-grounded method of raising our children in a loving environment that still manages to provide boundaries and self-disciplined children. It worked in our home! Thanks Dr. Kennedy.
Just plain Awful !! (Not to mention a sleeper of a book).......2004-01-29
I read a review of the book (which said how great this book was) on another website.
Talk about awful! This is book is definitely NOT a hands on book. It's wordy and the bottom line is, this author thinks we need to be "more emotionally mature" as parents, and to let our children rule the roost. Here are a few cheesy parts...p.197, "I will keep the toy until the two of you arrive at a plan for sharing." OH PLEASE! Can you just picture the look on your 3 and 7 year old faces? Then, on page 218, a rule for your kids "Ask permission to change the television channel." SURE...like that is going to happen. If you can stay awake thru the fluffy talk then buy this book. I found it a bore!
Super Fantastic Seminar.......2002-03-04
Rod Kennedy had over 100 of us rolling in the aisles with his very helpful hints in raising children. Anyone who has a chance to see how this father of 5 copes should give his books and seminar a "go!"...I loved what he taught me and my kids are doing better already. God bless him!
This book comes with the seminar and it is great.
Aspiring to Be Encouraging.......2001-11-01
I found the book refreshing and inspiring. I think that parents often fall into the trap of being controllers and forget how to encourage the children to think for themselves, confident in the never-ending love of God. While there are some concepts I may see slightly differently than Mr.Kennedy, I found the book helpful in my role as a parent of four and as an educator of parents.
Don't buy if you are conservative!.......2001-05-18
Mr. Kennedy was in town for a seminar on being an encouraging parent. I was unable to attend, and bought the book instead. I'm glad now that I didn't waste my time attending. I didn't even make it through half of the book, before I refused to read anymore. Mr. Kennedy is very liberal and would have us believe that we should never lay a finger on our children because it would break their spirit. It surprised me that as a preacher he quoted Bible verses, but put most of us down for our "incorrect" interpretations. After I got over being mad all through chapter 1 of Mr. Kennedy's accusation that parents who spank are "barbarians", I continued reading thinking he still probably had some good ideas on parenting. Then I hit chapter 5. I had to stop reading after that. I'm sorry, maybe it's just being from the Bible belt, but Mr. Kennedy not only told us to be tolerant of all people's differences (which I do agree with), but quoted the bible in support of homosexuality. That is where I draw the line.
