This is an outstanding book for kids and helps them learn a lot about different world cultures. The activities are fun and creative - I haven't seen a book like this in a long time. 5 out of 5 stars Kids around the world (and in Boston) cook!.......2004-03-10

I gave this to my first grader for the holidays, and he has been glued to it for the past several months. He loves learning about all of the cultures and talking with his foodie parents about cooking. A picky eater who is trying to change his ways, he now wants to try several of the recipes after we successfully made the mac and cheese (which was delicious).

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Way for Kids to Learn.......2000-04-21

This neat cook book for kids is filled with interesting recipes from around the world and is loaded with historical information about the cultures featured in the book and their foods. Want to know how the hot dog got it's name or when people first enjoyed an ice cream soda? Well, it's in this book. I've already tried a number of recipes including the nutmeg cookies from Norway, the potjiekos from South Africa, and the coconut bread from Jamaica. All were delicious! I would recommend this book to teachers, parents and kids who love to learn about different cultures through cooking. A great way to inspire youngsters and pass along a love of cooking!

5 out of 5 stars Kids Around The World Cook.......2000-04-03

I enjoyed this book for several reasons. Although there are other multicultural cookbooks around, I enjoyed the way Ms. Braman was able to combine the historical and cultural facts as well as the recipes. "Cooking Up Some History" provides information such as how the ice cream soda was invented back in 1874. "Culture Link" discusses information such as how the people in Denmark make a rice pudding that is eaten at the end of Christmas dinner. In addition, she added "Tasty Tidbits" and "What's In A Name?" that further provides information about the countries and their foods. Ms. Braman's writing style flows well, the book is easy to read and the recipes are written so that children will be able to make them with minimal help from an adult. I would recommend this "tasty" book to anyone, child or adult, who enjoys cooking/historical facts.

5 out of 5 stars A tale that flourishes like a lone camellia from beginning to end.......2007-02-10

The year is 1857. While other children are preparing themselves for the upcoming Moon Festival, twelve-year-old Spring Pearl is mourning the death of her scholarly parents, and packing her belongings to make the trek to Master Sung's home, where she will live with his family until she can find better accommodations for herself. However, while Spring Pearl is mesmerized by the lavish living of Master Sung, and his family, she can't help but miss her family's tiny cottage by the river, where she spent hours watching her handiwork in the garden flourish into a floral haven. Here at Master Sung's home, the garden has gone to pot, and all that remains are long, sharp weeds that sprout up every which way. Spring Pearl is supposed to be a guest in the Sung household, but Mistress Sung views her as nothing more than an orphan - one who would be better suited as a male, instead of a female, given the fact that she can read and write, but can't stitch to save her soul. She instantly begins treating Spring Pearl as one of the help, and allows her daughters - Miss Emerald, Miss Willow, and Miss Orion - to refer to her as such. Luckily, Spring Pearl finds solace in the form of Doggy, one of the Sung's hired help. Doggy is her age, and respects her, along with her tomboyish ways. However, when the Second Opium War begins building within the walls of Canton, China, and Master Sung is taken away for being a traitor, the only person there to help hold the family together is Spring Pearl. Together, she and Mistress Sung attempt to hold the family together, and keep it from going bankrupt. But as the French and British military begin to invade, the family begins contemplating whether an escape from within the walls would be safer for them all. It is only with Spring Pearl's "swamp-rat" ways that the family may be able to survive, and rescue Master Sung once and for all. But for that to happen, they must unite as one, and put their differences aside, in an attempt to come out on top and defeat their enemies.

I have read very little historical fiction revolving around China and the mid-1800's. However, from page one of SPRING PEARL: THE LAST FLOWER, I was drawn into the world of Pearl, and the somber cloud hanging over her as she attempts to ingratiate into the Sung household, and find her place among semi-royals. Laurence Yep has given Spring Pearl a strong voice, combined with vivid descriptions, as well as a brave heart and soul. Her intelligence during a time when female's were held down, and encouraged to obey their elders, as well as their male counterparts, is a wonderful thing to witness. Not only does Spring Pearl have the knack for reading and writing, but she has a talent when it comes to tongues, and the quick wits to bargain with just about anyone she comes in contact with. While it is sometimes tragic to witness the interactions Spring Pearl must hold with Miss Willow, Miss Orion, Miss Emerald, and even Mistress Sung, it is always entertaining to see the amazing way she holds her own, and manages to keep her cool, even as she is called names, and put-down. Spring Pearl is a heroic character, who will instantly win a place in the hearts of female readers, especially as she demonstrates her ability to overcome any obstacle she may face. A tale that flourishes like a lone camellia from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars This flower is unique and has rare beauty........2006-03-04

Chou Spring Pearl is a twelve year old girl growing up in Canton, China in the year 1857. She has just found herself an orphan. Spring Pearl goes to live with her father's friend, Master Sung, a rich scholar. Master Sung lives in a huge house in the very nice part of town. Spring Pearl has lived all of her life in the Rat's Nest of China (the run down part of town). Now that she has come to live with them they want to change her apperance which includes everything from her hair, which is done in a out of date style, to her feet, which seem to be a couple sizes to big. With all of this going on, Spring Pearl can only say that she has one good friend, Doggy. Doggy is a servant in the Sung household. Probably one of the strangest things of the time was that Spring Pearl was smarter than alot of the boys her age, even though she did not attend school and she doesn't care what other people think of the way she acts. Will Chou Spring Pearl be able to adjust to the new life changes or will she keep her differences? Find out for yourself.

I really enjoyed the book it really gave me an incite into the life of a girl in China during the "Opium War". I just could not put the book down. The author uesd exquisite details. Another really good book in the series, that you should also consider reading, which is not a book about a chinese girl but it is about a girl growing up in England in 1592. This book has alot of the same views. The name of the book is Isabel: Taking Wing by Anne Dalton

5 out of 5 stars A book all families can enjoy........2005-07-28

Spring Pearl is a 12 year old girl who likes gardening. But now that her parents have died she must move in with her dad's rich friend Master Sung. But this way of life is much different then her life in the rats nests, (where she used to live was called the rats nest). Will the Sungs ever except Spring pearl in there life, that is one thing that you will learn in this book after all the tragic events that the book will tell you about!

I think Spring Pearls story is great for all ages. But even if there is a girl on the cover, i think this book is good for boys to, because it is a story of adventure!!!

5 out of 5 stars True Chinese Sensibility.......2004-07-18

While this is a story which can be appreciated simply for the feisty character of the girl Spring Pearl, a poor scholar's orphan who goes to live in a rich patron's house at the height of the Opium Wars in Canton, it is so much more. Kind of a primer in Chinese culture which immediately raises modern questions as well. There are challenges to the system of values prevailing in the rich man's house, an understanding of the frustrated aspirations of adults as well as the difficulties of a girl's adolescence in a male-dominated society. But it is done with imagery not just wordy ideas, and this plays into the Asian sensibility to indicate rather than to assert boldly. I just loved it, and would recommend it for anyone from a precocious 8-10 year old, through to adolescence and beyond. I am eager to see the writer's series about the Chinese who came to America, the Golden Mountain. This is a superb introduction.

Another bonus is that it shows the true face of mercantilism and also of the internal politics of China in response to it. For those concerned about universal human rights, it definitely provokes thought. For those who think that merchants are just trying to strike a sincere bargain all the time, the fairy tale believers, it should also provoke thought.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2003-08-14

My 11 year-old daughter loved this book. She raved so much about it, I began to read it. From the very first page, one is drawn into the story of this very likeable girl. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2006-05-23

I love anything to do with Irish dance (I'm an Irish dancer) so this book was especially great to me, but it would have been a wonderful, historic story no matter who was reading it, and I give it five stars. A wonderful, inspiring story!

5 out of 5 stars Miracles happen.......2006-02-20

Kathleen, a twelve year old Dublin girl, is living among a struggling family in the early depression. When she shows up late to her strict, Catholic school a few to many times, the nuns suggest she enroll in Irish dance lessons in order to keep out of trouble. Upon the first lesson, she finds that she loves Irish dancing--and has a talent for it. The only problem is, her family has many financial problems, which ends the dream that never was.
Kathleen does not give up hope. When she is chosen to represent her class in a competition, she is thrilled, but finds herself in need of a miracle. With her mother's declining health and her family's lack of money, all she can do is pray for a miracle.
Beautifully written, and a very sweet addition to the Girls of Many Lands series.

5 out of 5 stars Miracles Happen.......2005-01-11

The year is 1937, and twelve-year-old Kathleen Murphy lives in the poverty stricken part of Dublin, Ireland, where she is made fun of for her torn clothes, and has a hard time making it to school everyday, what with having to try and help her Mother with the other children. It is only when strict Mother Rosario recommends that Kathleen begin taking Irish dance lessons, to keep her out of trouble and give her something constructive to do in her spare time, that Kathleen finds something in life that she loves more than anything. However, when Kathleen is chosen to dance at the feis - a dance competition - she begins feeling badly that she is so selfish as to pray to God for a special costume to wear, as her Mother is sick in bed. It is only when her marvelous Aunt Polly comes up with a fabulous idea for Kathleen's costume that she realizes that miracles do happen.

I have read three GIRLS OF MANY LANDS books since Christmas, and I will admit that KATHLEEN: THE CELTIC KNOT is one of my favorites. Kathleen is a wonderful character, whose fabulous spirit, and friendly nature will make her an appealing character to readers of all ages. Siobhan Parkinson has done a lovely job with the story of Kathleen, and has added many wonderful facts about life in Ireland during the 1930's which will attract history buffs. Overall, this is a wonderful addition to the GIRLS OF MANY LANDS book series.

5 out of 5 stars Makena's opinion.......2005-03-04

Isabel Taking Wing is really enjoyable because it is about
a girl in the 1700's. My opinion is that it's really good if you like historical fiction. It's really good to read from beginning to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Addition to the 'Girls of Many Lands' Series.......2005-01-25

The year is 1592, and twelve-year-old Isabel Campion is living under the strict rule of her Aunt Elinor in an upper-class neighborhood located in London. Isabel, unlike other 12-year-olds, wants nothing more than to escape the "conformist" society she is forced to grow up in. She doesn't want to spend her days cleaning stains out of shirts, or learning how to sew perfectly; but rather longs to explore the world, and become an actor like the boys she sees perform at the playhouse. Unfortunately, that's another thing Isabel is unable to do. Perform. For girls are not actors, and even the roles of females are played by males. When Isabel is sent to her Aunt de Vere's home, she becomes lost, and joins a group of boys who accept her as one of their own, and allow her to become an actor like them. But maybe acting isn't what Isabel was after all. Maybe there's nothing in the world that is perfect for her.

As a fan of the GIRLS OF MANY LANDS series, as well as sixteenth-century London, I found that ISABEL: TAKING WING was a perfect addition to the collection. Isabel is a spirited young girl, who is brave, and kindhearted, and will easily keep readers enthralled from the first page to the very last. Filled with many informational tidbits regarding sixteenth-century life, as well as information about London-born girls of today, Annie Dalton's effort will be cherished.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT book.......2004-01-12

Isabel: Taking Wing is a VERY good book. It tells about her life as a twelve-year-old in England in 1592. She becomes friends with Meg, a servant girl. But when she an Meg go to a theater alone, they end up staying too long, and they steal a boat that almost sinks. When Isabel returns home very late, her strict aunt tells her father what she's done, and she's sent away to her Aunt de Vere's country estate. When she finally returns home, her father forgives her after she saves her baby sister from dying. The only bad part in this book is when Meg dies from the plauge. This is a fantastic book.

First of all, the whole book, especially in the Then and Now part, have accurate descriptions of the clothing that was worn by women and girls in this time period. You learn about the different layers of their clothing and how clothes were used as a symbol of wealth and priveleage. You also learn of the accesorie called a pomander, which was important as it was supposed to ward off dieases such as plague. You also learn a bit about the hierarchy of birds and plays in that time. There are also hints about a women's place in society at the time.

If your purpose in reading this book was to learn about plauge, you also have several important details. In the book, especially at the end, you can find the symptoms of plauge. These may not be written out and palced in a list so to speak, but if you look for them and are good at inferencing, you will easily find them. Also, in the Then and now Section, you find about the attempts made my doctors in those times to ward of plauge. You also find out about how plauge spread, when it happened, and what families did if plauge hit them.

Of course, for many people, the reason they read this book was just to find an interesting book to read, and this book had details for them too. There are good descriptions in the book. Also, there are some parts in the story that are not necesseraly important to the overall plot, but form interesting, small sub-plots of their own, that make the book interesting and fun to read all around, although people who were reading this for specific information might have found those parts annoying. Many girls can connect to Isabel and her feelings, which are ones that we most likely have all experianced during our lives. Most of us can also probably imagine how it would be in this situation and if not you'd still might feel a bit saddened at first for Isabel.

This book is also very well written. The desciptions are very colorful and entertaing but they still give us insight on life in 1592 England. The parts that are funny, entertaining, and don't completely relate to the overall plot do not take over the book as in some other novels that I can metion but would prefer not to. The grammer is also very correct and the sentence starters vary, thus keeping the book from being dull.

In conclusion, this book is very informative, while still being interesting and entertaining. We can probably relate to it and it is extremely well written. I reccommend this to anyone of any age no matter what your reason for reading is.

5 out of 5 stars Moral-filled story.......2003-11-20

I've always heard that in many cultures and countries, boys are given so much more freedom than girls, and they get so many more privleges. I really think that's extremely unfair. Isabel: Taking Wing reiterates that boys are not better than girls. She has to stay at home all day while her brother, Robert, gets to go be an apprentice to a blacksmith. But whe Isabel goes to her aunt's place, she and I realized how great it is to help other people. Isabel also realized that she can't let a petty thing like how her other aunt is mean to her stop her from being adventurous. I admire her aunt so much for dedicating her life to helping others. It's an amazing book full of morals and lessons for life.

Saba Under the Hyena's Foot
By Kurtz
Historical Fiction
Character Motivation
By Jamie (age 9)
"I turned to flee. Out of nowhere hands grabbed me." This book is about twelve year old Saba and how she found out she was royalty. But when she did find out mean Empress Menen tried to get rid of Saba by marrying her to a prince. But Saba has one week to find her brother and escape. Will Saba do it? How? Reed the book and see!!

Saba's goal is to find her Emama and her brother. Her motivation is the unhappy thought of being married to a prince makes her keep trying. Another motivation she has is to be with her only family her and Emama (grandmother.) Another motivation she has is to get away from the evil Empress Menen.

Even though every book in this series is historical fiction the author's make the book seem so real like it was really happening. I recommend this book for girls ages 9-15 that have read at least one book in this series before. I like this book because it has a lot of detail that support the main idea. For instance, Saba would not take off her barebaso slippers because they were given to her in kindness. I hope if you read this book you will enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few great books about African culture!.......2003-10-29

Twelve-year-old Saba is a regular girl living in the country of Ethopia in 1846. Like any regular girl she has a brother, Mesfin, and a strict grandmother whom she adores greatly. Everything is well for her until she and her brother disobey and venture out of their home, where they are kidnapped and brought to the royal palace. It is there that Saba finally learns of her true identity. At first, Saba, keenly unaware of the dangers of the court, can only delight in her new found surroundings. Unfortuantely, innocence can not last forever, and she learns of a deadly threat to her and her brother...one that threatens their very lives and freedom. Yet, Saba is determined to use her wits to save her and her brother from the treacherous inner working of the court.

I was very much fascinated with this book for it was one of the very few books that talks about the Ethopia royal family in any great detail. Saba is a strong first-person narrator and you will enjoy her way of expressing herself. A definite must-read.

5 out of 5 stars ...brings India to life - taking readers on a cultural adventure.......2007-02-16

The year is 1939. Twelve-year-old Neela Sen wants nothing more than to please her mother after her fifteen-year-old sister, Usha, is married and moves away, but from the night of the wedding, the only thing she appears to be able to do is disappoint. Neela wants to obey her parents, but it is hard for her to think about settling down and getting married, when the only thing she wants to do is climb trees, play with her cow, Budhi, and learn everything she possibly can. And getting married will compromise all of that for her. However, when Freedom Fighters arrive at Usha's wedding, demanding that everyone donate a piece of jewelry, and hand over some money to support the cause to free India from Britain's rule, Neela begins to look further into the problems facing her beloved country. The problems that will certainly affect her in the future, even if they are not directly affecting her now. But then Neela realizes that she is being affected by India's fight for independence. For, soon after Usha's wedding, her father reveals that he will be going to Calcutta to march, and learn more about the problems affecting the world around them. Neela knows that her father will be fine, as he is a strong, kind man. But when he doesn't return home after one week, when he is expected, she begins to worry. She just knows that something horrible has happened to him, and decides to do the unthinkable...run away from home, leaving her mother to fend for herself, to search Calcutta for her beloved family member. While the world is a big, lonely place for Neela almost instantly, with the help of the relatives of a Freedom Fighter whom she helped escape from danger, Neela is able to integrate into upper class society, and learn more both about British rule, the fight for independence, and information regarding her father's whereabouts. Now, however, Neela must confront natives who have turned against their own kind, in an attempt to reunite her family, and save the only country she's ever known and loved.

I know very little about India. From its culture, to the Indian's fight for independence from Britain. However, since reading Neela's story, I feel as if I have walked away with a mind full of information that was not there prior to picking up this book. Neela is such a wonderful character. Full of spirit, and curiosity. Her transformation from an immature child to an educated, brave young woman is amazing to see happen before your eyes. Neela was determined from page one, and found the inner strength to strike out on her own during a time that was full of danger and uncertainty, and attempt to accomplish a task that seems so far-fetched for a girl of her age. A girl who was victim to a time when women were considered second-class citizens, and didn't have the same rights as men. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni paints a remarkable picture of the times of 1939. Her descriptions of the landscapes, and the lavish feasts and accommodations people of Neela's class, and those of higher officials, participated in on a regular basis were interesting to learn about, and really make readers think twice about the poverty that some people during those times experienced. NEELA: VICTORY SONG is a delightful addition to the GIRLS OF MANY LANDS series that brings India to life - taking readers on a cultural adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story line and Characters.......2006-04-05

This book is excellent! Neela, who is adventurous and brave (something very important in a good heroine), takes a dangerous trip to try to save her father with the aid of an intriguing freedom fighter during the era of protest over British rule. Every girl I have recommended this title to loved it, and I can't see why anyone would think this book is just "about a girl who doesn't want to get married" (like my fellow reviewer). I recommend it without reserve. It is an exciting story, that will interest the reader in Indian culture.

2 out of 5 stars Eh..........2005-06-13

This book is about a girl who is afraid of getting married, and also shows a bit of the struggle over India's independence. Quite frankly, the characters are generic and the plot is chichéd. I give it two stars because it DOES show emotion, and it DOES have a plot, but both are a bit flat and standard.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and educational........2005-01-07

This book contains quite a bit of information about the politics of India at a very tumultuous time; the information is presented in a way to make it extremely accessible to young women, which is an impressive feat. It seems to me like a lot of the Pleasant Company's main characters are somewhat rebellious, which makes them more attractive to a modern audience but also probably makes them less realistic. However, supporting characters, like Neela's sister in this book, let us view what more traditional young women would be doing as the action (in this case, Neela risking everything familiar to save her family and help her country) took place.

5 out of 5 stars Neela Victory Song.......2004-06-18

Neela is a twelve-year-old girl, she is brave, smart and intelligent. She lives in India with her mother, father, and her sister who is getting married. Neela is worried about India's freedom. Her father left to go fight for Mother India's freedom. Now Neela is stuck with her mother who is trying to find a husband for her, but Neela has other things on her mind than marriage. Three weeks go by, and now Neela is very worried about her father, who was supposed to come back two weeks ago.
Is her father still alive? Will he come back soon? Find out!
