5 out of 5 stars this is a book that every parent should own, a baby shower gift.......2007-05-28

How I wish I had had this book when my 28 year old daughter was born. We no longer have a relationship even tho we love each other but we are 16 (the farthest) personalities apart. I am an extreme extovert ESTJ and she is and extreme introvert (infp)just about the worst combo for mom and child. because she held it all in. She didn't have a chance to speak nor did she like conflict so it wasn't until she found a safe rock to jump to when she got engaged at 25, and she jumped all the way off my rock and never intends to return. I can't blame her looking back, but it wasn't my fault either, my biological family was definitely not introverted and I didn't know they would hold it all in. I am so sorry for what pain I caused her and never knew it, I was a great great mom,and elem teacher, but never knew my own daughter probably highly disliked me. Not until way too late, if only I had known. My heart is broken as I now have a grand daughter I will never get to be a grandmother to, and you may not understand this, but I am very extoverted and it is almost impossible for her to be around me even when I tone down 90% because of the experiences she probaby endured ages 0-5. So I'm sharing with you so you don't suffer the horrid pain I have suffered but have come to accept over the last 3 years since she married.I want only for her to be happy and I think that means she gets to be free of me :)

5 out of 5 stars The Fastest Way To Understand How To Be A More Effective Parent or Teacher.......2007-04-16

I work with students in an alternative K - 12 public school. We have found that it is always necessary to improve the understanding and communication between parent and child if academic and behavioral performance is to be improved.

This book is extremely valuable in helping an adult understand the child and the child to understand him/her self.

The book makes it easy for the adult to determine the adult's and children's styles that are interacting. It then goes on, for each style of child, to provide a brief overview, and then sections dealing with preschool, school-aged, and adolescent child. Within many of these age sections the authors have a sub-section that talks about "the joys and challenges of raising the child," and concludes each type with a page that recaps what works with that particular type of child.

I read the appropriate section to a mother and student and both agreed that it was a perfect description of how the child functioned and how the parent needed to deal with the child.

The advice given in the book on how my meetings with the student could be structured to maximize the achievement of goals I had set for the meeting produced results.

I strongly recommend this book to teachers and parents that wish to make a difficult objective easier to reach.

I also suggest you review the author's other books.

I use Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type to narrow down the types of jobs a student may be interested in before administering a career interest survey.

I use Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type to improve my understanding of how a person of my type can best interact with the type of person I am dealing with in a particular meeting or teaching / mentoring situation.

Why? Because I give them away and wear them out with people I care about. It is that practical. OK, I admit to being a certified instructor in the Myers Briggs and a licensed children's counselor now working as a leadership development consultant, but TRULY the insights of Type have helped me to be a better parent (my most important role)to my beloved children. Try it. Take a MBTI assessment for yourself and learn about what each aspect of your own Type means. Follow thorugh with helping you child learn about their type. You will see the bridges to cross together that lead both of you into a richer, more productive relationship with greater joy.

I bought this book before I had children because I was trying to understand my own personality a little better. Now I am trying to type my 2-year-old son-at least I am having a great time trying, even though I suspect I won't have any final answers until he is able to express himself a little more. Even at this age though, it helps me to identify different traits and not worry about the differences between him and other children in his environment. I think my son is an ESTJ and I am an INTP-so this book has helped to remind me that my son's way of relating to the world is different from mine, and that I need to consider his actions and needs in his context. Also, I like the fact that different learning styles, activity levels, and verbal abilities are discussed as well as the standard introversion vs. extroversion Myers-Briggs typing.

5 out of 5 stars One Important Tool for the Parental Toolbox.......2003-05-01

It is hard to underestimate the value of understanding personality type for developing effective business, spouse, peer, and parent-child relationships. I would speculate that many family conflicts are due to different personality types not being able to communicate with one another, or a child not fitting the behavior model established by the parents or siblings. Still, this is only one tool in the parental toolbox. Personality type should not be the only tool used, it doesn't mean that the tools of common sense and tradition are totally thrown out the window, yet it is a very useful tool and one that many parents are not aware of.

If you are not familiar with personality type, this book serves as a great introduction to understanding both your own and your child's, and may well be the first of a number of books you explore in this area of psychology. If you already have some knowledge about personality type (such as having read 'Please Understand Me II' by David Keirsey), it is still worth picking up a copy of this book. You will find the specific examples and descriptions of how personality type manifests itself in children at different ages to be helpful and insightful.

5 out of 5 stars MENDELSOHN IS A MAVERICK, BUT DEAD ON CORRECT.......2007-09-29

Some of the most critical life-affecting decisions regarding your child occur while pregnant and during the first moments, months, and years of their lives--nutrition, breast feeding, vaccinations, etc. Too many parents blindly defer to their ObGyns & pediatricians, and are not truly informed about the choices they make. You can get the same tired establishment line about how thimerosal (mercury preservative in vaccines) doesn't cause Autism in children. But, why even inject one of the most toxic substances known to man into our children the first place?

Sure Mendelsohn is a maverick, but you owe it to yourself to know all sides of the issues regarding your children's health.

My wife's ObGyn lives a block away from us. I am a medical researcher. She dismissed my concerns and questions when my wife was pregnant, and adopted the "I'm the pro here and do what I tell you" attitude. We ignored here advice, and designed an nutritional and supplementation schedule based on scientific research.

Our baby was full-term and rated a perfect 10 on the Apgar rating at birth. Her child, born two months after ours, was born weeks premature, underweight, and very, very ill.

An M.D. isn't a license in omnipotence. You owe it to your baby to read this book to get "the other point of view."

2 out of 5 stars A bit outdated........2007-09-02

I think the book was probibly great in 1984 when it was published. I was a bit disappointed about how outdated it was;it suggested giving a teaspoon of Whiskey for fever to an infant. I wish that the publication date was available to view before purchasing the book and if it was, to make it easier to find.

Times sure have changed in the last 23 years. The concepts are good but I think Dr. Mendelsohn needs to update the book and re-release it.

5 out of 5 stars I'm sharing this with all the mothers I know!.......2007-07-03

I purchased this book for two reasons: 1.) I am a mother of two young children who has had bad experiences with a few pediatricians in our pediatric group, and 2.) I work in the mental health field and a lot of the research I do on autism references Dr. Mendeholsohn's book and his position on vaccines.
With my own children, I have often felt disappointed with my well baby visits and have left the doctors office feeling that my doctors didn't really hear what I was saying. This book is so empowering and gives parents the needed information that is not shared with us in most situations. This book has helped me to choose a better doctor for my children and makes me more confident in taking an active role in their health care decisions.
Also, anyone who questions administering vaccinations to their child should read this book. I am utterly shocked that more pediatricians do not share this research with parents! Because this was written in the early 80's, some of the information is slightly outdated but this does not damage the integrity of the book at all. I'm giving copies to all pregnant women I know as well as any other interested parent.

5 out of 5 stars Bought this book in 1985 ...highly recommended reading!.......2007-06-11

I happened to be thinking about when I bought and read this book back in 1985 the year my daughter was born. I can't recall everything in this book this many years later, but I do remember the impact it had on me at the time, as I even wrote to Dr Mendelsohn to thank him for writing this highly informative as well as inspiring book. I was a first time mother and wanted to give my daughter the best start. I feel this book is one every new parent or every parent in general should read and pass along. He was a visionary in retrospect I would imagine, as I was just reading about the plight of parents with children that have autism and the vaccinations..this sparked my memory of this book and how I opted out of these vaccines..and am glad I did. I remember going to one "well baby" clinic when my child was a few months old and the nurse said to me" this is one of the healthiest babies I have ever seen"!!! and she has remained so. Her own friends throughout school always asked why she was hardly ever sick...well, read the book and pay attention to your instincts.
I had a homebirth with a midwife, breastfed until she was two yrs old, did not give her any food or cereal until 6 months, and then made all of her food homemade. I slept in bed with her from the moment she was born, and for the first few years. I did not allow pressure from others to vaccinate, especially with a childs immune system at infancy being so undeveloped. I took to heart the thought of anything that is introduced directly into the bloodstream as is most vaccinations, as opposed to the way we normally contract illnesses, through the mucous membranes. I see how to this day my own child at 22 is healthy and strong and has taken antibiotics maybe a few times in her life. When I was told she had a "slight" ear infection or redness..I would get into the car and crumble up the prescription for the antibiotic... and to this day they are overused.

The bottom line to me is that we should trust in nature and see that illness is not something we have to run to doctors for and get pumped up full of drugs, but to seek out less invasive ways to comfort and treat our children..like with herbs, homeopathics, or just plain rest and lots of loving care.

I see so many children that are sick alot today and are fed poorly, have had a lot of vaccinations, and antibiotics,, cold medicnes, etc..and are "ALWAYS" sick. Many of these children didn't even get the headstart of being breastfed with natures first line of defense for a childs immunities. Let's give this doctor the respect and praise he deserves in giving us this valuable information...and honesty. Not one person knows all there is to know, but we as parents do know our own children...and need to trust that birth, feeding, and the care and wellbeing of our children is a natural process, not one made in a laboratory.

A note: when I went to enroll my daughter in school they told me she could not attend without being vaccinated...so I went and got her at I think 4 yrs old, one shot of the then DPT, but asked to leave out the P pertusis part of it, due to controversies . After the one and only series of shots I found out that if I wrote a note to school saying" due to religious convictions I do not vaccinate my child" it was all I needed for her to continue on straight through high school without.

5 out of 5 stars Proof is in the Pudding.......2007-03-14

This book has been my bible for raising healthy children for the past 18 years and it has never been wrong. None of my brood has been immunized and they are the healthiest kids at school. I birth them at home, even one breech, with ease. I nurse them until them they're toddlers at least and practice what is now called "attachment parenting" that is espoused in the book. It works well and seems so much more natural than what I see more traditional, doctor-led parents go through, much nonsense of which seems to be harmful to their kids instead of good.

I think this book is timeless and still is quite relevant, maybe even more so in our current culture of fear. Parental fear is quite compelling, sometimes leading us to make the wrong choices for our children, and this book helps to keep the fears in check.

Honoring the body's ability to heal itself without the need for drugs; shunning invasive unnecessary procedures like circumcision (none of my boys are circumcised and most of their friends aren't either), ear tubes and tonsillectomies; breastfeeding and putting off solid foods until later; letting fevers run their course naturally; even mostly avoiding hospitals and doctors including well child checkups; has worked so well for us that our kids are considered a phenomenon as am I who just birthed my latest at age 46 -- at home in water.

Read this book and heed its advice. This now-deceased doctor knew what he was talking about and his wisdom is timeless, drawing on medical common sense and trusting the body to heal itself in most circumstances. The book will save you unneeded trips to the hospital and doctor and also a LOT of worry.

Book Description

If you grew up in a troubled or dysfunctional family and suffered through a parent's problems with chronic illness, addiction, emotional upheaval, or loss, you probably know what you don't want for your kids. But you may lack the tools and experiences to create the nurturing home you do want: a place where your children's physical and emotional needs are consistently met and where your children feel safe, valued, and loved.

In Healthy Parenting, Janet Woititz, a leading therapist, contrasts what happens in a healthy family with what happens in an unhealthy family to show just how your own upbringing influences the way you raise your children, and what you can do to make their upbringing better for them. For example:
-- In a healthy family the child is always loved even if the child's behavior is unacceptable. In an unhealthy family not only is the behavior criticized but the child is shamed as well.
-- In a healthy family the parent is teacher and guide. In an unhealthy family the child brings himself up the best he can.
-- In a healthy family there is structure, and reasonable limits are set. In an unhealthy family there is chaos or extreme rigidity.

As both therapist and parent, Janet Woititz can give you the guidance you missed in your childhood and help you avoid the mistakes your parents made.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy Parenting.......2003-10-18

This book is the most helpful parenting book I have ever read! It speaks to the unique issues of ACOAs while being applicable to parenting situations of all sorts. It really gave me a sense of what I have to be responsible for if I want to be a successful parent. The message given by this book is that the time for feeling sorry for oneself and for excuses is over, and that it is time to make things better with one's own children. The practical advice and examples gives the reader something to use to meet this end. I think that this book would be helpful to all parents - not just ACOAs.

3 out of 5 stars More empathy, please.......2002-05-29

This book has been helpful for me in turning around a lot of the unhealthy parenting patterns I learned from my dysfunctional parents. But I also was annoyed at times by what seemed to me to be a scolding, moralizing tone. Also, I felt the author should have shown a bit more empathy for her audience (as she does in her other books on alcoholic families). I finished the book with a bubbling rage toward my parents. Why did they get -- and exercise -- the option to fail their kids, while I am stuck having to work extra-hard to parent differently? Why do they get let off the hook so easily, yet I remain accountable? I've been stuck with this anger ever since my 4-year-old daughter was born, and even therapy hasn't thoroughly eliminated it. I do think Woititz owes us -- the true heroes in the struggle to break the chain of abuse -- a bit more validation and empathy than she shared in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about parenting that everyone can use........2002-02-10

This is a great book for people who have grown up in troubled families. It offers great advice and great insights on topics such as setting limits, boundaries, and a host of other parental problems. I use it with all of my clients and in my workshops and parent groups. Nicely written book

3 out of 5 stars Informative but not quite there........2000-08-18

Was helpful in realizng the actions of parents to their children, but I found other books more helpful overall such as, Toxic Parents overcoming their hurtful legacy and reclaiming your life, by Dr. Susan Forward. Not only helping the child, but focusing on the parent and how to correct their own lives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A Must-Read for ANY Parent!.......1998-12-01

The thing that I loved the most about this book was the way it clearly defined the fine lines between "Healthy and Unhealthy Parenting".

I learned that many of the ways in which I had been treated as a child were unfair, although I did not know it then.

My mother had no right to throw her adult temper tantrums around me, emotionally pounding me for the choices that she made in her life. At the time, I accepted full blame for her misery, and because of her hot and cold mood swings, learned at an early age what it felt like to be confused and depressed. My sister and I tiptoed around our mother, wondering if she was in a good mood, or in a bad one. If bad, we knew to avoid her and stay out of her way.

We learned early on to live underneath a shroud of denial, about our alcholic father and our verbally abusive grandmother, who we lived with.

Our mother would badmouth them to us, revealing innappropriate secrets so she could let off steam, then expected us to supress our own feelings. We were never allowed to vent or acknowledge that we were unhappy about our invisible father and overbearing grandmother.

My mother enjoyed using subtle psychological abuse. It left no physical scars, but was just as damaging. You were more likely to blame yourself than admit your mother caused your pain. Because my mother was not a big physical abuser, only having spanked us on rare occasions, we thought we had it pretty good, and had no right to complain.

As a young adult in my early twenties I became stepmother to a daughter who was diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder, a difficult behavior problem which requires much tolerance and understanding on the part of the parent.

Needless to say, I had trouble. I wasn't sure about what I had a right to expect and what I didn't have a right to expect from this child. We had endless power struggles because she had her own head problems brought on by her drug addict mother who abandoned her, and kept showing back up only to keep disappearing out of her life.

When I read this book, it made me only too aware that I was falling into the sinkholes of my past, in ways being much like my mother. I realized to my horror that I subconsciously set my daughter up at times to fail, so I could enjoy berating her. I never would have known had I not read the book. The book showed me in undeniable ways what was acceptable and what was unacceptable forms of parenting.

In every chapter I found something I could apply to my past. What a great relief it is to find out that all along, you didn't do anything wrong, after all. You can finally dump that huge weight of guilt, because it never belonged to you to begin with. And furthermore, nobody had a right to lay it all on you. How free, and light you feel after reading it.

My stepdaughter is not guilt free, it would have taken a strong individual to deal with what I coped with, but I wish I had this book from the beginning. Things would have been a lot less stressful, and much easier to understand.

I loved this book so much that it had inspired me to begin writing a book of my own, an autobiography about my life and what it was like to grow up with hostility, denial, and guilt. I am presently working on it and hope to publish it one day soon.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Adequate but not stellar..........2005-05-17

We adopted a four-year-old boy from Russia during the middle part of last year, and, of course, we faced many of the challenges that other families encounter in building trust, establishing a bond, integrating a new family member, and so forth. Having nearly survived the difficult early period, we were recommended this book by our social worker as something of interest to parents in our situation.

I found this book to be okay: helpful on the diagnosis side, but not so helpful on the resolution side.

As with other books about parenting, it does to tend to present issues more in the light of nightmare scenarios (exaggerating what most parents encounter, which is not to say that some parents don't encounter situations just like those presented, of course).

It's nice that the book immeidately goes beyond the catch-all rubric of "attachment problems", a phrase that is uselessly vague and helplessly non-specific. Our son faced (and continues to face) a number of challenges that this book does help identify (sexual abuse, abandonment, language skills, etc.) and categorizing the different kinds of issues in their own framework is a huge benefit.

It then proceeds to give bullet-point ways to try and address the situations. This is not an entirely satisfactory. Instead of seeming surefooted, these come across more like folk remedies (with no measure of success, no case studies showing whether something is working or showing lack of progress as well). Some things just seem like they are thrown out because they worked for the author. For example, why is it that giving your child a massage is a constant suggestion? I mean, yes, by all means, use physical contact as appropriate, but really now... family foot massage time is such a specific recommendation. It seems like the suggestions could use more polish.

I found a lot of the suggestions to be rather indistinctly delivered as well. Having validated one's observations (or stirred one's fears) there is relatively little material on how to work on various problems.

I don't know how things will ultimately work out for our family, of course. I like to think that, for the most part, we have the issues under control and are creating a happy, safe environment for our son. This book in many ways recognizes the challenges this presents and is valuable in helping identify challenges that might otherwise go unnoticed. But it is not so helpful in resolving the problems. For that other books might be more suitable.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful tips but lacks resolution.......2005-04-05

The book is a good overview of the parenting challenges that characterize the adoption of older children. The challenges are well, though briefly, defined and described. The challenges themselves are well-illustrated with vignettes of families.

What this book really lacks is resolution to the challenges identified. The vignettes each end with the intolerable situation that drives the family to seek help. They are followed by parenting tips for handling the situation, but without a second vignette showing how the family overcame the chanllenge the book feels depressing and the problems remain unresolved. The author, in not including a resolutions to the challenges identified, has missed a valuable opportunity to show the techniques she lists in action.

Nevertheless, this is a useful book and a good overview of the area. It would be a good introduction to the area, and a good complement to a more in-depth treatment such as Deborah Gray's Attaching in Adoption.

4 out of 5 stars Food for thought.......2004-05-11

The book contained chapters dealing with a variety of issues involving older child adoption, including ADHD, FAS, RAD, self esteem, creating a family, and other issues. She offered suggestions and solutions about how to best deal with these behaviors.

My one complaint involves the scenarios she outlined to explain each point. In them, she never resolved the conflicts she creates. I would have liked to see how those solutions might fit those scenarios.

The book offered me much food for thought as I considered undertaking an older child adoption.

5 out of 5 stars Rare, practical book in the adoption literature.......2004-01-08

While my wife and I have not looked far and wide, it seems that much of the non-academic adoption literature is very "adopt at birth"-focused.

McCreight's book is a rarer find, focusing on the differences older-child adoption presents. It is also rare in its presentation: wonderful, bulleted recommendations in bullet form, covering all of the major behavioral problems adoptive parents might run into. (Easy to look up in crisis situations!)

Lastly, McCreight has all the best street-cred: she's both a child therapist and an adoptive parent of seven.

I'd highly recommend this text for any prospective or current adoptive parent of an older child.

4 out of 5 stars A Self-Help Book for Parents with Good Lessons on Relationships.......2006-01-20

I don't have any children yet, but I read HOW TO RAISE EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY CHILDREN by Gerald Newmark because my cousin, a pre-school teacher, suggested it as interesting reading. It focuses on five critical needs that children have (that is, the need to feel respected, important, accepted, included, and secure) and discusses how to go about fulfilling those needs as a parent. It was a short, informative read, and some of the chapters included examples of how to deal with "real-life" situations at home. One of the things I got out of the book is the realization that you don't have to apply fulfilling the five needs only towards children - you can use them to also improve your relationship with your significant other, parents, siblings, friends, or whatever.

The book is a self-help guide, and it does offer a lot of good, sound advice. Unfortunately, not all of the chapters are as engaging as others, and some can come across as dry reading. Anyway, here's a list of the chapters in the book:

1. The Five Critical Needs of Children (Parenting as Though Children Really Matter)
2. Family Situations (A Closer Look at Behavior that Helps and Behavior that Hurts)
3. Recollections from Childhood (Memories Have Impact)
4. Becoming a Professional at Parenting (Childrearing Is Too Important to Leave to Chance)
5. Overcoming Obstacles and Taking Control (Maintaining Focus and a Balanced Lifestyle)
6. Implications for Families and Schools (Creating and Extending a Sense of Community)
7. Guide to Parent Resources (Tools for Life-Long Learning)

Again, it is a short book, but some the lessons you learn about improving relationships may stick with you for the rest of your life.

1 out of 5 stars How to raise spiritually healthy kids, by Bill Hybels, just hit the trash.......2006-07-18

How to raise spiritually healthy kids, by Bill Hybels, just hit the trash at our house. This book is supposed to be a book about parenting. But he starts out in the first chapter, "to be or not to be," he says that married couples should think twice before starting a family. What a way to start a parenting book! Obviously most people who would buy this book would already be parents, and the bible is very clear to "be fruitful and multiply". He takes power away from God. God can heal all wounds, especially in Christian couples who are seeking Jesus! Children are a blessing no matter the times we live in and God has a plan for every child that He "knits in the Mothers womb", regardless of the past, or emotional state of the mother or father. Eternity is what matters, we can take children with us into heaven, not stuff!!!!! "Children are an inheritance from the Lord and blessed is the man who is quiver is full of them". We need to raise Godly arrows "to go into all the World and Preach the Good News".

An excellent book to read when starting a family. I wish so much my parents had this book when I was a kid - it would have helped them avoid a lot of myths, doctors with hidden agendas, and simple mistakes that can have long term effects on a child's health.

Find this book in a library or through interlibary loan, read it, and it's likely you'll decide you want a copy to keep.

      5 out of 5 stars Alternative and/or traditional. What's best? It's all here........1999-05-25

If your looking for one book to give you real honest-to-goodness advice (without any hidden agenda's) on what's best for your child, look no farther. Lendon H. Smith, "the little baby doctor" as Johnny Carson used to call him, picks up where Mendelsohn left off with his "How To Raise A Healthly Child In Spite Of Your Doctor" (Copyright 1984). Smith's more up to date book delivers a well balanced and informative approach to raising your child. His advice is based all on the latest scientific data. He embraces that which is best for the child without any favoritism given to the "traditional" or the "alternative" approaches. The book is thorough, yet easy to read. If your looking for a book that follows main stream thinking, this is not it. If your really looking for a guide for what's best for your child and you are ready to fight for what's best for your child, then this is it (wife bought fourteen books, this book and one on breast feeding techniques are the only books we use). Buy this book. Sleep easier tonight.

      Book Description

Finally, a book to give you not only hope, but also practical and proven techniques on how you can parent your child and teenager effectively. Therapeutic Parenting offers:

      · Creative therapeutic parenting skills to address your child's emotional or behavioral needs
      · Basic parenting tools to help you guide your child everyday
      · An extensive list of possible warning signs for various childhood problems

Therapeutic Parenting is an invaluable resource you can turn to, as a preventative measure or as a hands-on support during your time of need.

The first half of the book contains primarily hypothetical situations and is intended for any parent or caretaker. This section of the book serves as a foundation for the remainder of the book, because it contains information on basic parenting skills that you'll need whether your child is occasionally oppositional or involved in illegal activities.

The second half addresses different problematic behaviors in children, and it focuses on some of the more prevalent issues that children face today. These chapters are based on the author's professional experience over the past eight years. In this part of the book, you'll learn how to parent children effectively and “therapeutically,” and you'll learn how to communicate with them at different developmental levels.

      5 out of 5 stars Straightforward Techniques.......2001-08-28

Therapeutic Parenting is a very well written, easy to follow book. It condenses the various types of children's problems into chapters so that parents can understand their child's problems. I really enjoyed reading about natural and logical consequences in dealing with your kids. It really helped me to understand the different ways to handle children, especially in difficult circumstances!

5 out of 5 stars Are Your Children Pushing Your Buttons?.......2001-04-17

Aren't children amazing? They know just which buttons to push to get a parent going! No matter what problem your child is experiencing and thus, which button he or she is pushing at any given time, it is addressed in this book. Not only does Ms. Kim recognize this issue, she gives examples showing a parent's normal reaction, and then shows how a parent's calm and matter-of-fact response can defuse the situation turning a negative experience into a positive one. The book format makes it an excellent reference guide easily referred to as various situations arise. This makes it a book that can be used over and over again instead of being read once and placed on a shelf. This is definitely a book for every parent. It will help you to keep your sanity, especially when your children are in the "terrible two's and horrible three's" and during those "challenging" teenage years.

5 out of 5 stars Yes , you can handle your kids!.......2001-03-12

...This book is a must have for anyone with children......it lets parents know that many of the things that kids do are normal and aren't the end of the world. The author gives excellent recommendations on how to manage your children on a general basis. But the best thing about this book is that the author K.H. Kim addresses a problem behaviors that are can be very frustrating and overwhelming for parents to handle. Not only will you find that many of these behaviors are perfectly normal, but you will also be given suggestions for dealing with them......

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids and adults for all ages.......2001-02-04

I found this book to be particularly insightful. I can even apply these lessons to my own self. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get a head start on raising kids, and even surviving them.

      5 out of 5 stars A New Primer.......2001-01-28

I wish I'd had this book available to me after the famous Dr. Spock primer, the parent's bible for young parents during the 70's. Having raised two sons, this book could have answered many of the questions I had as a young mother during their youth. Therapeutic Parenting is easy to read and well organized, enabling the reader to find information for any specific concern regarding children's emotional issues. The information is clearly defined by topic so that the book can be consulted as problems arise. The language has been distilled from Ms. Kim's case studies where she has drawn from her vast experience in the field of counseling to give any adult the working tools in order to succeed in the complex and difficult world of communicating with children today. It is a book that should be on the reference shelf of every adult working with children. I imagine Oprah will be saying the same to us in the near future.
