Book Description
For children with sensory integration issues-those who have difficulty processing everyday sensations and exhibit unusual behaviors such as avoiding or seeking out touch, movement, sounds, and sights-this groundbreaking book is an invaluable resource. Long thought to affect only autistic children, or mistaken for ADHD, SI dysfunction is finally being recognized as a separate condition. Coauthored by a pediatric occupational therapist and a parent of a child with SI dysfunction, Raising a Sensory Smart Child is as warm and accessible as it is authoritative and detailed and is an indispensable guide for parents, therapists, and teachers who will turn to it again and again.

Rich Content.......2007-09-27
I like the detailed listing of all the different kinds of conditions, which puts things in perspective. It has also helped me weed through so much of the hype found on various quack web sites. I shared the book with my mother-in-law and she has found it useful too. This book is informative.
Advice from the "trenches".......2007-09-21
I've been researching this subject for some time and fighting for almost 3 years to get my child tested for and receive SI Therapy....this is a great book from people who REALLY get it!
They are well educated on Sensory Integration Dysfunction.......2007-08-21
Don't listen to the reviewer who only gave this book one star. It is full of knowledgable insight and tons of helpful information. This book is a good one for parents who are just learning about SPD. Sensory Processing Disorders are real and he needs to educate himself about them. I am the parent of a child who overcame her sensory integration dysfunction. Early intervention is key. There are many therapies available to help. Finding therapists who are knowledable of it is very important. This book leads you in the right direction. If I would have listened to naysayers like this, my daughter would not be the happy, healthy, and outgoing young lady she is today! Meghan's World: The Story of One Girl's Triumph over Sensory Processing Disorder
Power for Parents.......2007-08-15
This book empowers parents to support their children in positive ways on an on-going basis. Every therapist who treats children with sensory processing disorders owes it to the parents to recommend this book as a "must" for daily survival. glenda fuge, MS, OTR/L
Best book for SDI.......2007-06-19
Most books tell you what's wrong with your child. Well, most parents can write their own book in regards to that. This gives you tons of ideas of how to introduce tons of therapy to your child that's practical and fun. It's the best book for SI problems and solutions.

Brilliant Navigator.......2006-12-11
This book is truly a Godsend. It is ideal for people on the autism/Asperger's spectrum who are approaching adulthood. Dr. Baker is plainly a gifted man and this book is proof positive of his logical vision. He is also a brilliant navigator who leads expeditions for people on the a/A spectrum into understanding the neurotypical world and issues in it.
I like the way he organizes assets and challenges by putting them into categories, e.g. work, social, etc. Dr. Baker includes some good practical techniques for handling difficult emotions. His advice on dating and employment issues is something no adult on the spectrum should go without reading. If you are an adult on the spectrum, please make this book your best friend.
Great Life Skills Training.......2006-07-11
This is a great motivational book for someone on the verge of entering into adulthood. Dr. Baker pinpoints specific skills needed for a variety of "life situations" by catagorizing them and dealing with them individually. It starts out with mapping out assets and challenges. There are activity pages to use when anger is an issue and suggestions on calming ones self. The book includes a 16 page section on dating. It offers great advice for job seekers, from writing resumes to handling rejection. These are only a few of the sections found in this book. It truly is indispensable for anyone with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome. I definitely recommend this one.

Customer Reviews:
Must-read for all clinicians.......2007-03-11
Thsi revision of Barkley's book is outstanding. The book is easier to read than past revisions, yet like the previous ones provides up-to-date research findings on ADHD. The chapters on school supports are matchless compared to other books by ADHD researchers/writers. Parents will probably find the book "heady", but no clinician should practice without having read this book.
Excellent but challenging........2007-03-05
This is the most complete explanation I've read on ADHD. It has been a challenging process but worth every minute and frustration. If you become familiar with this book you will be familiar with ADHD and will have a great reference at hand. If you have a child with ADHD or suspect the same you will get invaluable information if you can stick to it. This is definitely not "ADHD For Idiots"!

only because of the class.......2006-03-13
I only got this book for the class I was taking. I have no opinion on this book.
Great resource to address behavior problems.......2001-11-19
This book is a fabulous resource for anyone working with children or adults who display inappropriate behaviors. Special Education teachers, administrators, Behavior Specialists, Counselors, Psychologists and people providing direct care will benefit from the hands-on tool. The book gives sample Behavioral Support Plans (Behavior Management Plans) derived from an excellent Functional Assessment Interview (FAI) tool. Readers will learn how to target the problem behavior and provide measurable objectives to address the behavior. A "must have" for anyone providing support to students or adults with behaviors and/or MR/DD.
Thorough; Easy to both read and implement........1999-06-27
I use this text in my college course on "Behavioral Assessment and Positive Behavior Support" for beginning special education teachers. It breaks down the process of completing a Functional Assessment and Functional Analysis in an easy-to-understand manner. The examples and the forms included are extremely helpful for all levels of behavioral intervention.
AWESOME!!! The most complete yet practical guide!.......1998-12-10
As my school district has been learning how to conduct functional behavior assessments, this is the book we keep passing around and referring to. It is practical, useful and the information is research based.
Book Description
For teachers, counselors and parents, this comprehensive new resource is filled with up-to-date information and practical strategies to help kids with attention deficits learn to control and change their own behaviors and build the academic, social, and personal skills necessary for success in school and in life. It then details a proven set of training exercises and programs in which teachers, counselors and parents work together to monitor and manage the child's behavior to achieve the desired results.
Customer Reviews:
Through and comprehensive.......2006-12-06
There's certainly no dearth of information or misinformation on ADHD available to the public. However, compiling a comprehensive knowledge base for the newly initiated is a challenge. I came across this book after reading nearly everything the public library had to offer on ADHD. In this book Dr. Flick succinctly puts together an excellent resource on all the evidence-based information on ADHD. He also includes sections on "alternative" treatments that will appeal to some but is careful to indicate where science meets the marketting.
If you're new to ADHD this tome may be a little intimidating. The writing is here is a bit more dry than some other good sources on the subject like Barkley, Rosenthal, Phelan or Hallowell. Also as with all books on ADHD published before 2000-2002 some of the details on medication are out of date. The only serious omission is an explicit section on choosing good professionals to help you manage ADHD. But if you read and assimilate all the information in this book you should become a good judge of whether or not every member of your treatment team is functioning well.
If you are only buying one book on ADHD to keep on your shelf at home this is it.
ADD parent not satisfied!.......2005-09-12
I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc. Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it? When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all. So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info. Just not what I had purchased it for at all! =(
what a great resourse.......2005-08-30
this book is an excellent resource. I used it in a class I took and scored an A...
Highly organized and lots of great ideas and methods to get started.
A Must for Parents with ADHD kids.......2005-03-04
This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place.
brilliant but where was the section on diet????.......2004-10-03
brilliant book but it was like a whole chapter was missing! nothing at all on diet and nutrition, the fundermentals of ADHD. great book but with the diet mentioned, such as the Feingold diet etc this book would be like an ADHD Bible.the strategies etc were superb, well done but please consider THE DIET!

Book Description
The bestselling author and psychologist whose books have topped 240,000 copies in print now addresses the trait of “high sensitivity” in children–and offers a breakthrough parenting guidebook for highly sensitive children and their caregivers.
With the publication of The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine Aron became the first person to identify the inborn trait of “high sensitivity” and to show how it affects the lives of those who possess it. Up to 20 percent of the population is born highly sensitive, and now in The Highly Sensitive Child, Aron shifts her focus to highly sensitive children, who share the same characteristics as highly sensitive adults and thus face unique challenges as they grow up.
Rooted in Aron’s years of experience as a psychotherapist and her original research on child temperament, The Highly Sensitive Child shows how HSCs are born deeply reflective, sensitive to the subtle, and easily overwhelmed. These qualities can make for smart, conscientious, creative children, but with the wrong parenting or schooling, they can become unusually shy or timid, or begin acting out. Few parents and teachers understand where this behavior comes from–and as a result, HSCs are often mislabeled as overly inhibited, fearful, or “fussy,”or classified as “problem children” (and in some cases, misdiagnosed with disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder). But raised with proper understanding and care, HSCs are no more prone to these problems than nonsensitive children and can grow up to be happy, healthy, well-adjusted adults.
In this pioneering work, parents will find helpful self-tests and case studies to help them understand their HSC, along with thorough advice on:
• The challenges of raising an highly sensitive child
• The four keys to successfully parenting an HSC
• How to soothe highly sensitive infants
• Helping sensitive children survive in a not-so-sensitive world
• Making school and friendships enjoyable
With chapters addressing the needs of specific age groups, from newborns through teens, The Highly Sensitive Child delivers warmhearted, timely information for parents, teachers, and the sensitive children in their lives.

Brought tears of relief and understanding.......2006-09-07
Elaine Aron has provided a wonderful book to the parents and caregivers of highly sensitive children. I came across this book in the midst of a rocky transition to preschool for my son. I now feel confident that my frustration and sadness at his suffering can be replaced understanding and support. I have always accepted and loved him deeply for the special person he is but understanding more about how he must feel and how to reassure him makes a world of difference. I have not yet finished the book but already have no hesitation about giving it the highest recommendation. One drawback, book lacks an index which would be nice for quick reference. / Addendum, since reading this book I have developed some additional concerns about my child - wondering if he might be Asperger's or the like. We are in the process of an evaluation as I would like to assist him maneuvering in social settings if this is the case. Regardless this book was helpful. Am now reading "Quirky Kids: Understanding and helping your child who doesn't fit in -When to worry and When Not to Worry" which is a nice discussion of those issues.
Very helpful!.......2006-08-30
Bedtimes, transitions, going to school, and many other things have gotten easier for my child after following suggestions in this book. This book is very reassuring and helpful.
Great book if your child matches the highly sensitive profile.......2006-06-29
Wow! What a great relief to find a book that so clearly describes my child. It had been scary for me to think that my child was different and to doubt myself - wondering if my parenting was making my child cry more or cling more.
This book was great for us to help us let go of the stereotypes of what our child "should" be doing - and to really appreciate the amazing qualities that our child has. We've changed our outlook in many parenting situations. Our son has become more confident in many arenas as a result. We now recognize the internal struggle he goes through when he is weighing the risks involved with every, single activity that he embarks upon. And we have found ways to build his confidence.
Highlights of the book for me were: 1. recognizing the challenges of having a highly sensitive BOY. There is a definite role that boys are expected to fill in society and it's not that of the sensitive, shy person... 2. Recognizing that my son's actual senses are part of his sensitivity and increase when he is overwhelmed. For example: the bath water feels too hot, the tags in his clothing bother him more, sunlight bothers his eyes, etc. 3. The author's explanation for why a sensitive child shuts down (for those of you who have read the book, the "oranges" description) really helped me to understand how to avoid overwhelming my child with too many stimuli.
I wish this author were available for personal child behavior counseling. I'd love to speak with her in greater depth.
I loved the book and have bought copies for family members and teachers. If your child fits the description (it is fairly obvious if they do), this is a great resource to have.
yes! an answer!!.......2006-03-24
I didn't know whether to treat my daughter with "tough love," telling her to buck up and get over it, or whether to allow her to continue with her "sensitivities," gently treating her with compassion and patience. This book explained her temperament with accuracy and researched knowledge. The author provides extremely helpful and practical advice on the way to treat, support, encourage, discipline, and think like my daughter. I am grateful for this book--it's enhanced our relationship and our family. Also, I've learned that I also was a highly sensitive child, so my husband and I can better understand me, too.
A great book for parents with HSCs.......2006-03-22
My son is 2 1/2, and I have always struggled with discipline and understanding why he is so affected by what I think are petty things. This book helped me to understand that he is unique in how he views the world and that he does notice the little things. This book not only helped me to provide a more solid structure and discipline routine for him, but also opened my eyes to more subtleties in the world around us. Definitely a must-read for parents or grandparents with HSCs.

Help was needed.......2007-08-20
All the information I wanted and needed to know about ADHD is in here. I especially appreciate reading the quotes from other parents going thru what we're going thru and also appreciate the extra titles of other books based on a specific subjects pertaining to ADHD. This book has been extremely helpful.
it is what it is...practical advice.......2005-07-15
i too felt as if my daughter was described perfectly in this book. i have begun to implement a lot of the suggestions in the book and keeping notes on what works and what doesn't. this is the first book that i add to my library on the adhd subject and it was a great buy! it's very easy to read...read it during a 4 hour wait in the dentist's office! there are sections in the book that don't pertain to my daughter yet but i know i'll find useful advice as she grows older. i welcome any suggestions on other useful books that i should read and add to my library. thanks!
A GREAT BOOK FOR PROBLEM SOLVING.......2004-08-17
This book is really great for those looking for solutions to everyday problems. We bought this book because we were tired of all the "medical stuff". We wanted a book written by parent of children that actually have it.
i suggest every parent have this book and apply some if not all the principles in there.....it has saved us alot of times
Not the best book on ADHD.......2004-06-16
This book is a very basic handbook. If you dont know anything about ADHD, it will be helpful, as it answers most of your questions. For more experienced ADHD parents, this book will not tell you anything you already know.
I have some basic knowledge on ADHD, so this book didnt tell me anything new.
Highly Recommended.......2001-07-06
As a parent of a six-year-old with ADHD, I highly recommend this book to all parents of children up to age 10 that have ADHD. It's easy for a doctor, social worker, etc., to tell you how to raise a child with ADHD, but there is nothing like getting tips and suggestions from other parents who live with an ADHD child. Ms. Alexander-Roberts has written a marvelous, infomative book that should be read by ALL parents struggling to raise a child with ADHD.
This book, written by Colleen Alexander-Roberts, is based on her actual parenting experiences--both what works and what doesn't work. Not only does she give the reader many tips and suggestions that work, she also gives the readers tips and advice from other parents.
The book "The ADHD Parenting Handbook" should be on the shelve in every parents home. Yes, it's that good. In fact, I saw it on the bookshelve in the office of my son's therapist. When I asked about the book, the therapist said that she highly recommended that my wife and I read it. We're so glad she did because it has became OUR BIBLE on ADHD and parenting.
Thank you, Colleen, for taking the time to share your real life experience with readers such as myself. It's obvious that you wrote this book for parents just like my wife and myself.
This is one book every parent should read.

Customer Reviews:
What I wish I knew before I got pregnant........2004-06-26
My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004. My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces. The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist. Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later. My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later. I was 31 weeks into my pregancy. He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home. This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.
I am 30 years old and was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure two years ago. This book is a step by step account of what happened to me. I developed pregnancy induced hypertension which turned into preeclampsia. None of my doctors (family practicioner or OB/GYN) told me how dangerous and high risk my pregnancy would be. I wish I knew then what this book has taught me now, it has been a real eyeopener and lifesaver.
essential for (expecting) preemie-parents.......2001-11-21
Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.
When I heared I was going to have my baby within half an hour, at 26 weeks of pregnancy... I had no idea what was laying ahead of me.
This book prepares you on what to expect when you have a high-risk pregnancy and takes you trough the 24 hours after delivery, your preemies growth and maturation, the neonatal unit, bringing your baby home and later-life development. There is also a part on babies with special needs and a part about when things go wrong.
From the many lonely hours I could not be with my baby, I spent many reading this book. The stories of other parents helped me survivng the nicu and the many charts and statistics helped me to get an image on what to expect.
Thank you very much for this book.
The book for a high risk pregnancy and the NICU.......2001-07-18
A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU. I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming. This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely.
Helpful beyond words.......2001-04-30
This is THE book I wished I'd known about in advance when we developed problems later in my pregnancy. I actually think anyone expecting a baby where there is a possibility of it becoming a high-risk pregnancy (and face it, that could be any of us, right?) should read this book so that you can be prepared to be the best possible advocate for yourself and your child in the NICU and during the transition out. It will also help you understand the complexities of what goes on in the NICU so you can work well with the staff caring for your infant.
Essential reading.......2000-11-21
This book has been a God-send. Its clear, comprehensive text, helpful illustrations, and authoritative advice (the lead author is a top Houston neonatologist) is just what my husband and I needed when we found out our baby was going to be born prematurely.
We especially liked all of the stories and testimony from parents, people who have experienced the fear and uncertainty of high-risk pregnancy. Their stories are incredibly reassuring. We needed to know we weren't alone.
This book is a must-have for any parent whose pregnancy is not going as planned.
Book Description
The Consulting Therapist will prove a valuable reference to therapists working in educational settings. Occupational and physical therapists will appreciate the comprehensive review by authors Barbara E. Hanft, M.A., OTR/ L, FAOTA and Patricia A. Place, Ph.D. of the literature on school-based therapy. Current practice in pediatric therapy in any setting requires that the clinician consider how to collaborate with professional colleagues and family members to expand the impact of direct therapeutic intervention. Ms. Hanft and Dr. Place have made it easy to learn about consultation specific to OTs and PTs in educational settings, filling a major void in the literature. The authors' years of experience are evidenced by their insight into what is necessary to become a successful member of the educational team. They understand that the clinician must appreciate the philosophy, roles, and responsibilities of the classroom teacher and the unique needs of the child with a disability in the school setting. They carefully guide the reader through the requirements necessary to provide educationally relevant consultative services. The effective strategies and case studies in this 154-page manual will assist therapists with implementing a consultative model in the school setting. Clinicians will have step-by-step information to help them:
*
apply their therapeutic knowledge and skills to improve children's school performance
*
identify the six essential decisions for using an effective consultation model
*
analyze the interpersonal skills needed for each of four stages of the consultation process
*
collaborate with colleagues and families
*
resolve conflicts among team members Helpful and time saving reproducible forms are provided for observing student performance, developing a school consultation plan, observing the environment, and assessing one's consulting skills.
