Recently, temperament traits have come to the forefront of child development theory. In Raising Your Spirited Child, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's first contribution is to redefine the "difficult child" as the "spirited" child, a child that is, as she says, MORE. Many people are leery about books that are too quick to "type" kids, but Kurcinka, a parent of a spirited child herself and a parent educator for 20 years, doesn't fall into that trap. Instead, she provides tools to understanding your own temperament as well as your child's. When you understand your temperamental matches--and your mismatches--you can better understand, work, live, socialize, and enjoy spirit in your child. By reframing challenging temperamental qualities in a positive way, and by giving readers specific tools to work with these qualities, Kurcinka has provided a book that will help all parents, especially the parents of spirited children, understand and better parent their children.

Book Description

The spirited child — often called "difficult" or "strong-willed" — can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate. Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more" — by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Through vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka offers parents emotional support and proven strategies for handling their spirited child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:

Filled with personal insight and authoritative advice, Raising Your Spirited Child can help make parenting the joy it should be, rather than the trial it can be.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommend.......2007-08-14

This book is one of the best parenting books available. It is one of the few books that actually offers substantive advice about how to deal with certain behaviors. Furthermore, it is the only book that I have read that maintains a positive outlook on "spirited" children. The book does not focus on ways to change the child and does not imply that the child has a disability. It simply teaches the parent how to deal to deal with behaviors and feelings of the spirited child. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the book is. I reread parts of it nearly every night.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my mind.......2007-07-20

I was so sure my son was different in so many ways that I would never be able to keep up with him. This book helped me decide which of his spirits needed extra attention from me and how to direct that spirit once I identified it. Now when he goes nuts jumping up and down on the bed, I know it's because he has a lot of pent up energy from having to be still for a long time (i.e. school). When he gets very quiet and withdraws I know he is needing special one on one attention because something has bothered him too much and he's embarrassed by that. There are so many nuances for each of our children and this book really helps figure out the particular ones that your own child is gifted with.

5 out of 5 stars If you think you need this book, then you do!.......2007-05-21

This book is fantastic. I just can't say enough great things about it. If you think your child might be "spirited" do yourself a favor and give this book a read.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide for the perplexed (parent, that is).......2007-04-22

This lady obviously knows her stuff, as well as her audience. Ms. Sheedy Kurcinka seems to be describing my child in some passages. I found the tips for heading off a meltdown quite helpful. And it's of course comforting to know I'm not in this alone! I'd recommend the book to any parent who's getting gray dealing with a "spirited" child.

Book Description

Now in a NEW UPDATED version, Kurcinka offers parents the most up–to–date research, effective strategies and real life stories for:

•Managing intensity – not just the kids, but parents too

•Getting the sleep every family needs and deserves,

•Choosing their battles

•Helping children to hear their instructions

•Assisting children in getting along with siblings and peers, and

•Being successful in school and at home.

Spirited children possess traits we value in adults, yet find challenging in children. Studies now show that these children are "wired" to be more reactive to the world around them. The solution, rather than medication or punishment, is understanding temperament and working with it. Kurcinka in a supportive, warm style is able to reveal to parents how to do it, often leading them to ask, "How did she get into my home?" Winner of the Parents' Choice Award, voted one of the top twenty books for parents, and a "real life saver" for parents, this updated version is eagerly awaited by parents and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Good for every parent........2007-10-05

Raising Your Spirited Child is a good resource for every parent. It is important to understand your child's unique temperament. I especially like the practical suggestions and summaries of things to say to your child. It is a very positive book!

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2007-10-02

I can only describe this book as liberating. When I found it, our son was 5. I sat and cried with relief, knowing I was not alone. 7 years later I still quote many part of the books. I don't even know how many copies I have bought and lent out. My favorite part was the real definitions of introvert vs. extrovert...wow, what perspective. This concept alone has totally helped me to better understand my family and friends. It is also a wonderful thing to teach my kids so that they can recognize the needs of themselves and their friends. Our son is now 12 years old, very intelligent with a huge heart. This book helped us to learn how to adapt his environment without enabling him. Understanding his need for more sleep, less drama, and smoother transitions help him to be stronger and more secure emotionally and let's be honest....it all benefits the family dynamics. Praise God!

5 out of 5 stars truly excellent book.......2007-08-16

As soon as I started reading this book, I used some of the recommened techniques and got miraculous results. It helped me deal with my stress, and I found my 3 year old really relieved too. I guess anyone would prefer this style of interaction over our previous push & pull. I think this is a must read for anyone with any kind of child...not just spirited ones. It not only gives incite into understanding and dealing with your child's temperament, it helped me understand my own better too so I could clue her into my trigger points as well as her own.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource-- I'm purchasing a 2nd copy 10 yrs later!.......2007-08-01

This was a total eye opener when I originally purchased this book 10 years ago! (My son was 2 and my daughter was a newborn!)I've since recommended it and loaned it out so many times that my copy didn't come back the last time! (And I can't remember who has it now!) I both laughed & cried while reading it and I finished it in 1 night (newborn-remember?)It really helped both my husband and me see what WE were doing differently--not necessarily "wrong", just not RIGHT for our son--and WE made changes. (Note to the person who wrote "this book had no tips we could use": read it again & remember you're the parent who needs to guide the child.) We realized simple things--we shouldn't have taken him on numerous errands at the end of his day or WE paid for it (our son doesn't handle ANY change well and he still doesn't--he's 12 now!) We've had to teach HIM how to handle difficult situations. I'm now going to read it again to help with the preteen years for both of my children!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2007-07-08

This book is fantastic for anyone who suspects that they are raising a spirited child. Other child raising books just aren't sufficient when you're raising a child with "spirit." It was a delight and a relief to know that there are other children in the world who have as much energy and are as tenacious as mine. I highly recommend this book!

Book Description

The bestselling author and psychologist whose books have topped 240,000 copies in print now addresses the trait of “high sensitivity” in children–and offers a breakthrough parenting guidebook for highly sensitive children and their caregivers.

With the publication of The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine Aron became the first person to identify the inborn trait of “high sensitivity” and to show how it affects the lives of those who possess it. Up to 20 percent of the population is born highly sensitive, and now in The Highly Sensitive Child, Aron shifts her focus to highly sensitive children, who share the same characteristics as highly sensitive adults and thus face unique challenges as they grow up.

Rooted in Aron’s years of experience as a psychotherapist and her original research on child temperament, The Highly Sensitive Child shows how HSCs are born deeply reflective, sensitive to the subtle, and easily overwhelmed. These qualities can make for smart, conscientious, creative children, but with the wrong parenting or schooling, they can become unusually shy or timid, or begin acting out. Few parents and teachers understand where this behavior comes from–and as a result, HSCs are often mislabeled as overly inhibited, fearful, or “fussy,”or classified as “problem children” (and in some cases, misdiagnosed with disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder). But raised with proper understanding and care, HSCs are no more prone to these problems than nonsensitive children and can grow up to be happy, healthy, well-adjusted adults.

In this pioneering work, parents will find helpful self-tests and case studies to help them understand their HSC, along with thorough advice on:
• The challenges of raising an highly sensitive child

• The four keys to successfully parenting an HSC

• How to soothe highly sensitive infants

• Helping sensitive children survive in a not-so-sensitive world

• Making school and friendships enjoyable

With chapters addressing the needs of specific age groups, from newborns through teens, The Highly Sensitive Child delivers warmhearted, timely information for parents, teachers, and the sensitive children in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Brought tears of relief and understanding.......2006-09-07

Elaine Aron has provided a wonderful book to the parents and caregivers of highly sensitive children. I came across this book in the midst of a rocky transition to preschool for my son. I now feel confident that my frustration and sadness at his suffering can be replaced understanding and support. I have always accepted and loved him deeply for the special person he is but understanding more about how he must feel and how to reassure him makes a world of difference. I have not yet finished the book but already have no hesitation about giving it the highest recommendation. One drawback, book lacks an index which would be nice for quick reference. / Addendum, since reading this book I have developed some additional concerns about my child - wondering if he might be Asperger's or the like. We are in the process of an evaluation as I would like to assist him maneuvering in social settings if this is the case. Regardless this book was helpful. Am now reading "Quirky Kids: Understanding and helping your child who doesn't fit in -When to worry and When Not to Worry" which is a nice discussion of those issues.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful!.......2006-08-30

Bedtimes, transitions, going to school, and many other things have gotten easier for my child after following suggestions in this book. This book is very reassuring and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great book if your child matches the highly sensitive profile.......2006-06-29

Wow! What a great relief to find a book that so clearly describes my child. It had been scary for me to think that my child was different and to doubt myself - wondering if my parenting was making my child cry more or cling more.

This book was great for us to help us let go of the stereotypes of what our child "should" be doing - and to really appreciate the amazing qualities that our child has. We've changed our outlook in many parenting situations. Our son has become more confident in many arenas as a result. We now recognize the internal struggle he goes through when he is weighing the risks involved with every, single activity that he embarks upon. And we have found ways to build his confidence.

Highlights of the book for me were: 1. recognizing the challenges of having a highly sensitive BOY. There is a definite role that boys are expected to fill in society and it's not that of the sensitive, shy person... 2. Recognizing that my son's actual senses are part of his sensitivity and increase when he is overwhelmed. For example: the bath water feels too hot, the tags in his clothing bother him more, sunlight bothers his eyes, etc. 3. The author's explanation for why a sensitive child shuts down (for those of you who have read the book, the "oranges" description) really helped me to understand how to avoid overwhelming my child with too many stimuli.

I wish this author were available for personal child behavior counseling. I'd love to speak with her in greater depth.

I loved the book and have bought copies for family members and teachers. If your child fits the description (it is fairly obvious if they do), this is a great resource to have.

5 out of 5 stars yes! an answer!!.......2006-03-24

I didn't know whether to treat my daughter with "tough love," telling her to buck up and get over it, or whether to allow her to continue with her "sensitivities," gently treating her with compassion and patience. This book explained her temperament with accuracy and researched knowledge. The author provides extremely helpful and practical advice on the way to treat, support, encourage, discipline, and think like my daughter. I am grateful for this book--it's enhanced our relationship and our family. Also, I've learned that I also was a highly sensitive child, so my husband and I can better understand me, too.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for parents with HSCs.......2006-03-22

My son is 2 1/2, and I have always struggled with discipline and understanding why he is so affected by what I think are petty things. This book helped me to understand that he is unique in how he views the world and that he does notice the little things. This book not only helped me to provide a more solid structure and discipline routine for him, but also opened my eyes to more subtleties in the world around us. Definitely a must-read for parents or grandparents with HSCs.

Book Description

In a book likely to transform how parents manage many of their child's daily struggles, Drs. Smith and Gouze explain the central and frequently unrecognized role that sensory processing problems play in a child's emotional and behavioral difficulties. Practicing child psychologists, and themselves parents of children with sensory integration problems, their message is innovative, practical, and, above all, full of hope.

A child with sensory processing problems overreacts or underreacts to sensory experiences most of us take in stride. A busy classroom, new clothes, food smells, sports activities, even hugs can send such a child spinning out of control. The result can be heartbreaking: battles over dressing, bathing, schoolwork, social functions, holidays, and countless other events. In addition, the authors say, many childhood psychiatric disorders may have an unidentified sensory component.

Readers Will Learn:

The result: a happier childhood, a more harmonious family, and a more cooperative classroom. This thoroughly researched, useful, and compassionate guide will help families start on a new path of empowerment and success.

5 out of 5 stars The Sensory-Sensitive Child.......2007-06-10

It is very informative. It explains what is going on through the childs eyes as well as the frustrations that we as parents are going through with such a situation. It has made me better aware of the symtoms and how to deal with them. It also lets me know that my son is not alone in his struggles and it has been identified as a "real" issue, not just what a lot of people like to say is just an excuse as to why your child is misbehaving. I appreciated the input and am making a doctor's appointment next week in order to try and work on my son's sensory issues. I am extremely thankful that I found this book to purchase and read.

5 out of 5 stars The Sensory Sensitive Child.......2006-11-17

The Sensory Sensitive Child is one of the best books I have read on the subject. It truly helps explain what the child and families may be going through and gives practical solutions for dealing with sensory processing disorder. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars What EVERY parent should know about their special child!.......2006-11-04

As I started reading this book, a light bulb went off...either someone absolutely knew my granddaughter, from the inside out, or I wasn't alone anymore!! WOW! This book, is full of information, suggestions, and in general REALLY GOOD help for anyone who lives with a child with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Key message...YOU'RE NOT ALONE...and HELP IS AVAILABLE!

5 out of 5 stars These Authors have "been there".......2006-09-28

This is a fantastic book. My second daughter (now aged 7) has global and verbal dyspraxia (motor planning). We have been to many specialists for diagnosis. We have been in speech therapy since she was 2 1/2. We have had some OT, but not as much as is discussed in this book. We have been searching for ideas and answers, reading books, etc for most of her life. This book is the absolute best I have read for describing "What is it like, being a sensory-sensitive child and also a parent of a sensory-sensitive child. A Child whose world is not near as easy as it is for ordinary children." This book offers insight, relief, excellent advice and reasonable hope that you, as a parent, can make a significant improvement in your child's life. It is also very readable (many of these types of books are hard to finish). Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you, Karen and Karen. Well Done.

4 out of 5 stars Mother of a Sensory Kid.......2006-08-03

This book is a good primer for parents of kids with sensory processing disorder. Book is organized well and is an easy read. The book describes the characteristics of this disorder in segments which makes it easy to use it as a reference guide. The book does not offer a lot of ideas to help with sensory diet (keeping your kid happy and meeting his/her needs)--for that I recommend, Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun.

Book Description

Kids with sensory processing disorder SPD may seem unduly sensitive to physical sensations, light, and sound, and they may react strongly to sensory events that adult and other children take in stride or totally ignore. SPD can make it hard for kids to do well in school, participate in social events, and live peaceably with other family members. Until now there have been only limited resources for parents of kids with this condition, but in this book a child advocate and child psychologist offer this comprehensive guide to parenting a child with SPD and integrating his or her care with the needs of the whole family.

The book introduces SPD and offers an overview of what it means to advocate for a child with the condition. It describes a range of activities that help strengthen family relationships, improve communication about the disorder, and deal with problem situations and conditions a child with SPD may encounter. Throughout, the book stresses the importance of whole-family involvement in the care of a child with SPD, especially the roles fathers play in care-giving. Many of the book's ideas are illustrated with case stories that demonstrate how the book's ideas can play out in daily life.

5 out of 5 stars Family Relationships and SPD - A Unique Resource.......2007-02-14

Due to their sometimes unusual reactions and needs, parents of children with sensory processing disorder may need additional levels of patience, compassion and understanding. With this book, parents are given valuable tools to strengthen their relationships and to help their special children reach their potential. Through their own personal stories and the examples of other parent-advocates, the authors illustrate the tensions of living with children who have different aspects of Sensory Processing Disorders. They authors impart a concrete message of hope and encouragement with their advice on problem solving, coping strategies and relationship building. A useful book for professionals serving families, as well as parents who wish insight into their family dynamics.

1 out of 5 stars not that helpfull.......2007-01-23

I was disapointed with this book. It was more about family dynamics, especially how to have a good marriage than SPD. It was more about the author's austistic brother than dealing with SPD. Maybe because I have already read alot about SPD, but I thought this book was not worth buying and with the exception of the vinette about "Holland Schmolland" which is both funny (for those of us who have been there) and sad, not really worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!.......2007-01-18

This book was just what I needed! I'm always trying to find other parents who have experience with sensory kids and this book had lots of stories, practical hints, and thoughtful reflections from parents in many different situations. I came away with lists of resources to go to, but more importantly, I came away appreciating our family and was motivated to laugh with my kids and husband more. I'm so grateful the author took the time to put all the information together to address this issue -- especially since he's a busy parent too!!

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate and informative.......2007-01-12

This book, on a burgeoning subject, is packed with stories, tips, and resources, and covers all aspects of life and parenthood (including chapters on the too-often ignored subjects of sibs and marriage). A fine read straight through, or, as the authors recommend, taken in short bites as the reader skips from subject to subject. Probably everybody knows some parent, sib, or other relative who would find this book a godsend!

1 out of 5 stars Parenting a Child With Seneory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understandiung & Supporting Your Sensory-sensitive Child.......2007-01-10

I found some usefuly information in this book and have shared one chaper with my sons' Kindergarten teacher. In general I found this book very dry and hard to read, I kept falling asleep reading it no matter when I tried to read it. It just did not flow and keep my attention nor did it read like a text book, it just was not for me and I would not recommend it. I would like to offer I have read about 15 books on sensoery integration so I was knowledgable in this subject matter, maybe to a person just starting the sensory issues it would be better suited.

The Asperger Plus Child: How to Identify and Help Children with Asperger Syndrome and Seven Common Co-Existing Conditions is based on current research and the author s clinical observations from working with brilliant, wild, odd, and difficult children for fifteen years. It provides a map that helps them understand better at home and at school. The Asperger Plus Child is written for parents, teachers, counselors, and medical professionals. In this book, George Lynn continues the tradition of breaking new ground in his insights about the children he calls attention different. Some pearls from this work are: Why it is important to understand the real difference between autism and Asperger Syndrome. How you can tell if a child has AS or ADD and why the distinction will become more important as the child grows through his teen years. What a child with AS who also has a nonverbal learning disability looks like compared to a child with AS without an NLD! Though each child is as different as a fingerprint, neurology exercises a powerful force on character development: There are shared patterns, there are important differences. The Asperger Plus Child presents a commonsensical, interesting, and understandable description of these essential distinctions.

5 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Perspective on Asperger Syndrome.......2007-07-11

When you are a parent of a special child a diagnosis can be both a blessing and a curse. On the positive side, it can be a great relief because now you have a starting place to move out from to help your child live a full and wonderful life.
You may have received a diagnosis or suspect that Asperger Syndrome is what you are dealing with, but your child's symptoms seem to be more than just the basic criteria...now what? This is where George Lynn steps in with his latest book The Asperger Plus Child to help you navigate the often turbulent and unpredictable waters! Keeping in the delightful spirit of his previous books, the author helps us to gain the knowledge and tools we need to help our child, always pointing out the wondrous and unique gifts they have, as well as the inner strength that we as parents have to tap into.
This amazing book looks at Asperger Syndrome and the various co-existing disorders that may be present as well. The chapters are specific to each combination, well researched, extremely user-friendly, and filled with the encouragement and belief in our children and ourselves as their parents that George Lynn is famous for. The final chapter lays out a unique, easy to use tool designed by the author called A Character Map. It contains multiple yes/no questions that will help you to see what your child's diagnosis might be and then aid you in going to the specific chapter(s) in the book for help and understanding. This is a wonderful resource alone!
As a parent of a special child and as a therapist, I am so grateful for this marvelous addition to my reference library and return to it continually for guidance, understanding, and inspiration for my own child as well as my clients. I eagerly await George Lynn's NEXT book!!

5 out of 5 stars A Human Voice for Meaning and Therapy.......2007-03-20

Perhaps the most striking feature of the ever growing literature on Asperger syndrome, is the paucity of psychological therapeutic exploration. Models of diagnosis and education intervention are dominant, but what about the identity needs of these growing children and their families? Both are in dire need of psychological care and and a framework of meaning. Mr. Lynn has provided another wonderfully courageous and soulful discourse that will be of benefit to all parents and professionals who share their lives with AS children. He understands so well, that diagnosis and symptom are only one perspective in viewing the inherrent mystery and complexity of human psychology. Similarly, he is well grounded in the reality of the therapeutic and medical needs of this population. An excellent and much needed work to augment our psychiatric perspectives.

Book Description

Childhood wounds—whether from parents, siblings, teachers, or any other source—often leave us vulnerable to developing a "sensitive heart." When left unhealed, these wounds wreak havoc in our adult lives, especially in our intimate relationships. People with "sensitive hearts" grow to doubt themselves, and actually wonder whether they deserve a healthy, balanced relationship. In time, they begin to attract dead-end relationships. With each unsuccessful romance, the "sensitive-hearted" person moves farther and farther from a positive, loving, long-term partnership.

Psychologist Dr. Debra Mandel, who has worked extensively with "sensitive-hearted" individuals, now offers a unique, eleven-step program to guide you out of the emotional debris of the past, and help you establish happy, healthy, and successful relationships moving forward. This system works, as confirmed by hundreds of Dr. Mandel's satisfied clients.

Helpful quizzes, true examples of sensitive-hearted people who have turned their lives around, and cutting-edge information combine to make this a must-have relationship builder. There is no need for you—or anyone you know—to stay trapped in unhappy patterns. Healing the Sensitive Heart paves the way to a lifelong love that won't disappear, dissolve, or disappoint—ever again!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good advice........2004-01-24

This book is an excellent read for those of us who continually make stupid relationship decisions. Why do I let myself fall for the same type of person over and over when I know it will only lead to emotional pain for me? This book tells us so much about the ways of getting into these kinds of patterns, how to recognize them, and then how to move on. Everyone should give this book a try, even if you think you've never had any problems.

5 out of 5 stars This book combined with ýPsychic Giftsý can change your Life.......2003-12-06

I really liked this book. I am an avid reader and would recommend adding this book to your must read list. Another book that really impressed me is Psychic Gifts in the Christian Life - Tools to Connect, by Tiffany Snow, pub. 2003. In this time of increasing awareness for the need to help our relationships, workplace, family, self and environment, these two books are at the forefront of giving us the tools to do so - not only by positive reinforcements, but in the case of "Psychic Gifts," showing we have a Divine birthright to access the supernatural in our lives, and how to tap into that. I encourage you to Keep Reading, apply what you learn, and be a force for good in your part of the world.

4 out of 5 stars This is not just for those with a Sensitive Heart........2003-07-06

Healing the Sensitive Heart: How to stop getting hurt, build your inner strength, and find the love you deserve by Debra Mandel, Ph.D.

I thought I would be the worst candidate to get something out of reading this book. I am not one of the sensitive hearted people that Dr. Mandel is referring to, but there are many such people in my life. I may be a magnet for sensitive hearted people. I learned from reading this book that I can help my sensitive hearted friends.

I have friends and relatives whose sensitive hearts have kept them trapped in a fantasy world. They sell themselves short because they have been "taught" that their own feelings do not matter-they exist to serve the will of their parents or some other childhood character. Dr. Mandel shows a path that sensitive-hearted people can follow to become Thrivers. Thrivers enjoy life and give back to the world more than they take. Thrivers have a balance between serving their own needs and responding to the legitimate needs of others.

I recommend this book for the happy soul mates and friends of sensitive hearted people. We can benefit when we understand the likely genesis and resolution of behaviors that are so odd to those of us without sensitive hearts. Thank you Dr. Debra.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2003-07-01

As a therapist myself, I am on the look-out for books that would be helpful to my clients. "Healing the Sensitive Heart" is an outstanding resource! Written with clarity, compassion, deep respect for people, and belief in their capacity to change and grow, it resonates with authenticity. It provides an excellent analysis of the inner life and behaviours of the "sensitive-hearted", and clear, effective strategies for restoring balance and achieving a healthy relationship with self and others.
I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Healing the Wounds that Bind Us.......2003-06-28

'Healing the Sensitive Heart' compassionately takes us on a journey of a millions miles by encouraging us not to be afraid of taking the first step.

Book Description

"Why doesn't my baby sleep better?" weary parents ask. "How can we get more sleep?" There are as many answers to these questions as there are babies and families, says Dr. Avi Sadeh in this helpful and reassuring (some may say indispensable) book. Based on his years of research with sleep-disturbed babies and their sleep-deprived parents, Dr. Sadeh suggests a wide variety of practical solutions to babies' and young children's sleep problems.

Other experts may recommend one strict approach to changing a baby's sleep habits, but a single remedy fails to take into account a baby's uniqueness and the dynamics of his or her family, Dr. Sadeh contends. He helps parents first to understand the natural sleep patterns of babies, and then to consider their own family's situation and needs. In an accessible style designed to ease anxious parents' worries, Dr. Sadeh describes the various sleep problems of early childhood, outlines treatment possibilities, and details the pros and cons of each of these choices.

This book will appeal not only to sleepless parents seeking relief but also to those who are curious about the most recent findings in children's sleep research. Dr. Sadeh addresses a full range of questions: What is the importance of sleep to a baby? How do babies in different cultures sleep? How is sleep related to development? What causes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome? How do babies calm themselves? What are the advantages and disadvantages of communal sleeping? With up-to-date answers to these questions and more, Dr. Sadeh offers parents and professionals all the information they need to help babies—and their families—sleep better.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting data but no answers........2002-07-16

A very sensitive and thoughtful treatise on babies and sleep. It was written in a sophisticated, academic tone that was difficult to get through in my sleep-deprived state, and seemed much longer than its 200 pages, but the information is thorough, such as explaining how human beings sleep and how important sleep is to growth and development. The book has charts and graphs, but they are more scientific than practical. I really was looking for specific ideas and solutions, but had to turn to a different book for those: The No-Cry Sleep Solution, which has an exact step-by-step plan for helping a baby to sleep better.

3 out of 5 stars Pasadena Mom.......2002-03-02

Somewhat Socratic in style, Dr. Sadeh challenges the reader to understand the root cause of a child's sleep disturbances. Loaded with research data, sleep watch charts, and real-life case studies, the author gives a thorough explanation of infant sleep and infant sleep disorders. The author also gives a good explanation of the use of sleep transition objects. The book is well organized and chapters are kept short for an easy read.

Overall, the book has a "researcher" feel to it as if these problems are "interesting" rather than sad which bothered me as a parent. The author waits until chapter 19 to discuss treatment options which seems to be a bit of a cliff-hanger ending. In all, I found the book to be very educational and thought-provoking, but short on practical advice. I felt I gained more everyday guidance from the "Healthy Sleep Habits; Happy Child" book.

It has helped us from the time our son was just little (2yrs. old) all the way up until now at the age of ten. It continues on into the teen years. Everytime we pick up the book it seems to refer to something we are currently experiencing with our son. It is a very good guidance tool!
