5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Excellent Advice from an Expert.......2000-10-23

This book is packed with great information, is very well written, and has an easy to follow format. Tips are given that are easy to understand and implement by parents desirous of increasing the success of their children. The language is straightforward, the bullet points of ideas and shaded boxes of examples, create an inviting approach for the reader. Referencing information after the initial read is simple, which is a real plus for a hands on book like this. The ideas offered in each chapter are critical and can make a difference in the lives of children right away. As a professional speaker and mother of two small children I look forward to many years of using Jay's techniques! Thank you for sharing your wisdom in a practical format that will make an impact on the youth of today and tomorrow! Excellent work.

5 out of 5 stars Moments of Truth.......2000-10-20

Jay has put together an insightful book that contains what you need to know and what you need to do to connect with our youth of today. This is an excellent book for adults without children as well as parents and teachers. Our world is heading in a better place and the future looks brighter because of books like this. Thank you Jay, and keep up the great work!

5 out of 5 stars Have More Fun, Save Money, Bond Better!.......2000-10-11

Author shows us how we can have more fun with our children, do it inexpensively, and build better relationships as a result of good parenting habits. Lots of resources and great ideas you can read in one night. Not only does the author tell you "How" to teach your children easier, but also "Why" kids do the things they do so it all makes sense. If every parent read this book, they would see that they don't need to go broke "buying" their children unnecessary toys, but that just spending valuable, quality time with them is the best gift of all. Great work!

5 out of 5 stars For Grandparents Too.......2000-10-09

As a grandmother of a just two year old, I was delighted to have a book available to me to help me spend the precious time I have with my granddaughter in creative and constructive ways. This author has written a book which is both an inspiration to read cover to cover and one to keep on the shelf as a welcome reference from now well into the early school years. He not only suggests ways to make everyday activities quality teaching times but has arranged the chapters into educational areas making it easy to go back for specific examples. He highlights many excellent books for children. Now I know where my gift list resides.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond First Grade Academics.......2000-10-07

This book is just loaded with good content for parents who have children of ALL ages. Yes, it certainly covers the basic teachings of first graders, but more so than that! It shows opportunities for parents to teach in everyday circumstances as an adjunct to classroom learning.

"Teach Your Children Well" covers how to communicate to our children in ways that convey respect, acceptance, and understanding. There are delightful tips and nuggets thru out for things to do, places to see, & references to other helpful books.

I think if all parents read and used this book as the manual of childrearing, our hard working teachers' job would be easier, the children more receptive to learning, and our homes a little less chaotic. I highly recommend this book. Buy it in Kindergarten, but use through high school. It's never too late to teach our children and for us to learn good parenting skills!

Madison and friends are at it again in the second book in the series Teach YOur Children Well!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Party Princess.......2005-09-27

A wonderful book and part of a wonderful children's series! Dr. Braver helps parents teach their children well in a fun and creative way through her books. Children will also benefit and learn moral values from this fun series of books as well.

5 out of 5 stars A positive and uplifting book with a meaningful and relevant moral.......2005-09-12

Writte specifically for children ages 4 to 8 by practicing child and adolescent psychiatrist Vania Braver and enhanced with the lively and entertaining illustrations of Cary Pillo, Party Princess is the newest addition to the "Teach Your Children Well" series from Child & Family Press. Party Princess is the story of young Madison, who wants to look extra beautiful for her big birthday party. But an accident with nail polish leaves terrible stains on her gorgeous dress! She feels terrible for a while, then finds a way to make herself feel better - by sharing a treasured gift with her best friend. The wisdom that she learns is "Beauty comes from the heart. You should feel good about yourself... especially when you realize that real beauty is what's on the inside of a person, not the outside." A positive and uplifting book with a meaningful and relevant moral, especially in today's appearance and fashion-driven world.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book!.......2005-06-21

I'm an elementary school teacher and read this book to my class a few weeks ago. The kids loved this book, even the boys! They are still talking about it. They already knew the characters from Pinky Promise. There were so many great points to discuss afterwards. I used some of the activity sheets and teacher's guide from the author's website which were helpful. The illustrations are well done and compliment the book nicely. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Party Princess is Superb!.......2005-06-19

The story is warm, sweet and simply wonderful!!! Dr. Braver (visit www.drvanitabraver.com) captures the magic of story telling, accompanied by beautiful, whimsical illustrations. My children love the first book, "Pinky Promise". I look forward to collecting the entire "Teach Your Children Well" series. I'm sure all the books will be treasured for years to come!"

5 out of 5 stars Princess Learns Beauty's True Source.......2005-06-19

Dr. Vanita Braver knows that it is difficult to teach our children well.

For starters, she's a child psychiatrist who is the psychiatric medical director of the residential treatment center Bonnie Brae. She's also a mother.

She took much of what she learned in both roles to create her series Teach Your Children Well. The second book in that series, Party Princess, released in April 2005, is a book that features 6-year-old Madison and the lessons she is learning about morals.

Party Princess opens with Madison getting ready for a big day. She's put on a lovely pink dress and is thrilled with how beautiful she feels. As she welcomes her best friend Emily as the first guest at her birthday party, she decides that some of her mom's makeup would make her look even more the role of a party princess. Only like most 6-year-olds, she isn't quite coordinated enough to put on make-up without making a huge mess-including spilling sparkly red nail polish all over the bathroom counter and her dress.

At this point in the story, many parents are nodding their hands and ready to jump up and tell their stories about times that they as a child or their own children have done something similar. It is this familiarity that Braver strives for-putting her protagonist into realistic situations that both parents and children can relate to.

What might be less common is the response of the mother. While she is obviously frustrated and shares her disappointment with Madison, she doesn't yell, she doesn't punish, and she doesn't make Madison feel worse than she already does. Instead, she just sends her to change out of the beloved party dress into something less desirable, but not smattered with nail polish.

Throughout much of the rest of the party, Madison sulks. While her mother may not have yelled at her, Madison feels her disappointment pretty keenly and feels guilty about her misbehavior and unhappy with the consequence of not getting to wear the pretty clothes that she had so carefully dressed herself in.

Her mood is only restored after opening a present and getting the opportunity to make Emily feel good-an opportunity that she takes advantage of to the approval of her mother and the delight of her friend. At bedtime that night, she and her mom talk about the makeup incident and her mom reminds her that she is never to touch the makeup without permission. She also reinforces that Madison is pretty without makeup-that she is beautiful because of the spirit within her. Madison reflects on the day and said that she felt far better about sharing with Emily than she did about wearing her party dress.

As a woman who dislikes the pervasiveness of makeup and the message from the beauty industry and media that we must change ourselves in order to be beautiful, I found a lot of appeal in this short picture book. Madison discovers on her own that she feels a lot better from being a beautiful person than she feels from simply looking beautiful. She also discovers that efforts to beautify oneself physically can backfire and leave one looking ridiculous, wiping out all the time invested.

A device that Braver uses in both books are the appearance of Madison's stuffed animals. Wisdom the Owl, Honesty the Bear, Hope the Bluebird, and Courage the Lion all are good friends to Madison the way stuffed animals are to children. For the adult reader, their presence can seem a bit of overkill. However, our children are less jaded and the target audience of four to eight-year-olds will appreciate the presence of listening companions who seemingly whisper in Madison's ear as she drifts off to sleep, helping her to process the day's events and what's she learned from them.

Cary Pillo is the illustrator and she uses bright happy colors throughout the books. She does an excellent job of painting pictures that seem alive with both motion and emotions. She paints some of the most infectious smiles I've seen in picture books.

The book is published by the Child & Family Press, an imprint of the Child Welfare League of America. They are a publishing house who dedicate all of the proceeds from sale of their books to supporting CWLA's programs for children and families.

I always approach morality stories for children with a bit of trepidation. They too often fall into the category of being too didactic or absent of any sort of dramatic conflict whatsoever. Thankfully, Braver manages to avoid these traps. Party Princess is successful on two levels. First, it has a charming story for children that addresses the importance of self-esteem and developing an inner beauty. Second, it provides a good model for parents on how to respond to those frustrating situations-including a model on when to step back and let the child work out the problem.

Party Princess is the second book in the series. The first one is Pinky Promise. The third one is due out in April 2006.

Book Description

For the past 30 years, effective methods of teaching children and preventing illiteracy have been used in a small number of schools and learning centers across North America. Despite their proven effectiveness, these methods have never been adopted by mainstream educators. This book documents the use of three effective methods of making students successful in school: Behavior Analysis/Behavior Management, Direct Instruction, and Precision Teaching. It focuses on the method in which Michael Maloney combined these powerful technologies into a single whole to produce even more rapid academic gains for both children and adults.

For anyone with a child in school, an interest in education or literacy, or a concern for the quality of students that North American public education currently produces, this is a must-read book.

5 out of 5 stars Why is education so inept at doing its job?.......1999-06-02

It is hard to imagine how such a large segment of our society with such an important task could have strayed so far from its central purpose. Our schools are failing our children to an alarming degree. In the major city in which I live, in nineteen of ninety schools second graders score below the 25th percentile in reading comprehension. Forty-two of the ninety score below the 35th percentile. How do you spell "disaster?" We have a good superintendent who had been on the job for two years, and has done some courageous things to stem the tide. But it might be too late. Providing some hope, the superintendent has looked closely at one of the programs Michael Maloney advocates for in this book, Direct Instruction, and has included it as one of three programs schools have to choose as their reading program. Alas, only ten schools out of ninety chose Direct Instruction. The overwhelming majority chose a somewhat nebulously defined literature approach to reading--whole language all over again, which has gotten the second graders to the achievement I noted above. Where are the credentials of these programs, besides monumental failure as in California? Why are teachers allowed to use faulty tools for learning? Where are the child advocates? This book names a few, and that is why all teachers should read it. Maloney describes educational powerhouses based on strong research that proves without a doubt that the programs work. Take Direct Instruction. It is crafted so carefully that only teacher faulty implementation can cause learning to misfire. Many criticize DI as too restrictive. We wouldn't send a heart surgeon into an operation without an explicit script to follow, with rules and experience to dictate just how to proceed in a particular case. Is a pilot unable to function with detailed checklists, mandatory procedures, exhaustive training for situations that may never occur? But we will send a teacher into a classroom with the most meager of tools, scanty directions and a "wing-it, don't measure it" attitude. Can we expect anything else but a nation at risk? The programs and techniques Maloney describes share the theme, "learning is behavior change." If not all of the programs are based entirely on behavioral technology or applied behavior analysis, they include and are compatible with behavioral principals. Just as Skinner reminded groups of psychologists of the error of their ways, even as they were awarding him their highest honors, behavior analysis varies with the educational mainstream. Even seven years of data which provided clear evidence that Direct Instruction taught children much more effectively than the eight other paradigms studied, could not turn the heads of the educational zeitgeist. Programs proven to retard the academic growth of young children were funded more readily than Direct Instruction. If children had an adequate lobby, they wouldn't be so easily taken advantage of. It is hard to understand what is happening in education without invoking the concept of an evil empire calling the shots. Proficiency tests and charter schools indicate that the public may finally get serious about education reform. When they do, they will find themselves ready to align with the programs in Maloney's report. Precision Teaching, a much under-noticed technique, could solve the testing disputes. Based on timing correct and incorrect responding, it removes all ambiguity from testing. That should have happened when Chester Finn noted that in every state in the union over half the children scored above the fiftieth percentile on standardized tests. In Ohio, the state decided to reduce the required score on the fourth grade proficiency test, because so many fourth graders were failing the test. It was also revealed that the standard for passing was based on nothing in particular anyway. Back to Precision Teaching. Building fluency in skills has been ignored by education and training, when it is the most powerful concept to ever be introduced by Skinnerian behaviorism. Ogden Lindsley seized this notion of his mentor, Skinner, and honed it into a sophisticated technique for building learning and measuring it explicitly. We can easily observe the rate at which third graders can compute various kinds of math problems. We can average the score of thousands of them, if that suits. Then all we have to do is give your favorite third grader a page of similar problems, tell her to "go", and see how many she can do. Why do we have to order sacred test booklets, enflame the fears of the most confident students, send the tests off to the sponsor and get back data that are of limited use, since they are based on mysterious "norms." Again, we seem to have lost the student in the shuffle. The more we can keep the student's actual behavior in focus, the better off we are. That is Maloney's message. Teach Your Children Well was written by a man who has done it himself. We should listen to him WELL

5 out of 5 stars Hope and help for those failing in public school today.......1999-01-21

Finally, an up to date documentaion of the research that proves the parallel shortcomings of the public education system in both Canada and the United States, AND the little known proven methods of reform. Parents learn that their children are failing because of the ineffective classroom methods used, not their child's 'learning disabilities'. More, parents are assured that their children CAN learn to read fluently given proper instruction and practice time. Research proves there is a better way and I thank Michael Maloney for compiling that truth into a book that will bring hope and help to the parents and children who know the despair of failing to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Solutions offered for those failing in the public school sys.......1999-01-11

For those students that are failing to accomplish the skill levels required to occupy a productive role in modern society, Michael Moloney has solutions. He describes these solutions in some depth, and gives you directions where to go to get help. He also describes why these solutions are not available in public school systems. Maybe we can change the school system in time, but meanwhile you may need to get direct help for your loved ones who are not being served in the present system. Unfortunately you have to forsake your tax dollars and find something in the private sector, but the productivity of your loved ones is at stake. All of this is detailed in the book, Teach Your Children Well.

              Book Description

In a society adrift without a moral compass, parents worry about their children navigating through difficult issues and making the right choices. Substance abuse, escalating school violence, and the increasing use of pornography make daily headlines. What can parents do in the face of these grim statistics?

To help kids survive--and thrive--in contemporary culture, parents need practical tools to help their children build a strong foundation of moral character. Don Otis, the father of three children himself, offers a wealth of information on moral decision-making in this book, including:

              * helping children stand firm against peer pressure
              * limiting negative influences
              * building strong moral character
              * teaching kids how to make good decisions on their own
              * helping children make good friends without being overprotective

This easy-to-use guidebook will be an invaluable resource for parents, teachers, and anyone who seeks to empower children to make confident, positive choices in a chaotic world.
