Book Description

Any sensible diet will help you lose weight, but the challenge for 90% of Americans is actually staying on the diet they choose.Enter Dr. Judith Beck and The Beck Diet Solution.Dr. Beck, one of the foremost authorities in the field of Cognitive Therapy, has created a four-week plan that will help people stick with their diet, lose weight with confidence, and keep weight off for a lifetime. With other programs, you think about nothing but food: counting, weighing, and worst of all, food you cant have. This way of thinking inevitably contributes to diet failure. The Beck Diet Solution is the only program that helps dieters use Cognitive Therapy methods scientifically proven over 20 yearsto forever change those treacherous thought patterns that lead to overeating, cheating, excuses, and other dieting downfalls.

5 out of 5 stars A simple and easy-to-follow way to retrain the way you think about food.......2007-10-10

Coming from a family of obesity and over-eating, this is the one book that is enabling me to break the cycle and break free from my old ways of doing things (that were not getting me anywhere). It's definitely not another "diet" book but a great way to condition ourselves in order to succeed at any diet we choose to follow. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of failing at dieting and failing themselves and ready to make some real changes that will result in lasting and joyous results.

5 out of 5 stars Applies to more than just diet.......2007-09-27

Judith S. Beck is right, and her approach works not only for diet, but it can be applied to other efforts in life as well where people derail themselves with their own thoughts. This is a tool for success, not a diet.

5 out of 5 stars Beck Diet Solution.......2007-09-21

This book is great for anyone who wants to lose weight and keep it off. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the same thing I used to quit smoking 20 years ago, and it really works. The book is written in layman's terms so it's easy to understand, yet not condescending. I highly recommend it.

Judith S. Beck, The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person (Oxmoor House, 2007)

The Beck Diet Solution is not a diet book in the strict sense; there are no eating plans to be found here. This is, more accurately, a diet book adjunct; Beck has designed this to be usable with any diet, whatever you work with. Even the grapefruit diet. (If you're crazy enough to try the grapefruit diet, of course.) Beck's goal here is not to change what you eat so much as the way you eat it, the way you think about eating it, and your habits while eating. After all, as millions of us are well aware, just changing what you eat is in no way guaranteed to shed pounds and keep them off. The idea is to read a chapter a day for six weeks, learning Beck's tips and techniques gradually in order to change your mindset towards food. Does it work? I know that since reading it, I've looked at a few things differently; it's certainly worth a try. *** ½

I am always telling people to buy this book. I have made a friend buy it. Now the tricky part is sitting down and doing it daily. It is a process. I can't wait for the workbook to come out in Oct 2007. This book needs the workbook. It should have been thought out before.

Book Description

Is it really possible to change the structure and function of the brain, and in so doing alter how we think and feel? The answer is a resounding yes. In late 2004, leading Western scientists joined the Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala, India, to address this very question–and in the process brought about a revolution in our understanding of the human mind. In this fascinating and far-reaching book, Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley reports on how cutting-edge science and the ancient wisdom of Buddhism have come together to show how we all have the power to literally change our brains by changing our minds. These findings hold exciting implications for personal transformation.

For decades, the conventional wisdom of neuroscience held that the hardware of the brain is fixed and immutable–that we are stuck with what we were born with. As Begley shows, however, recent pioneering experiments in neuroplasticity, a new science that investigates whether and how the brain can undergo wholesale change, reveal that the brain is capable not only of altering its structure but also of generating new neurons, even into old age. The brain can adapt, heal, renew itself after trauma, and compensate for disability.

Begley documents how this fundamental paradigm shift is transforming both our understanding of the human mind and our approach to deep-seated emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems. These breakthroughs show that it is possible to reset our happiness meter, regain the use of limbs disabled by stroke, train the mind to break cycles of depression and OCD, and reverse age-related changes in the brain. They also suggest that it is possible to teach and learn compassion, a key step in the Dalai Lama’s quest for a more peaceful world. But as we learn from studies performed on Buddhist monks, an important component in changing the brain is to tap the power of mind and, in particular, focused attention. This is the classic Buddhist practice of mindfulness, a technique that has become popular in the West and that is immediately available to everyone.

With her extraordinary gift for making science accessible, meaningful, and compelling, Sharon Begley illuminates a profound shift in our understanding of how the brain and the mind interact. This tremendously hopeful book takes us to the leading edge of a revolution in what it means to be human.

2 out of 5 stars Reference book.......2007-10-14

Read what I was interested in and then passed the book on to a friend. It really was not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars believe you can change.......2007-10-11

I think most of us believe we can acquire new knowledge and skills throughout life. The hard part is believing we can change habits and emotional responses. That the mind can actually cause physical changes in the brain. This book does a good job of showing that the evidence is accumulating that change can and does happen. However, it is not enough to simply have an insight. The book also relates the actual process of change to the meditative (mindfulness) techniques of Buddhism. I use this information and techniques in my work as a school counselor. It really works! It can make changes in your life as well!

4 out of 5 stars 'Focus & Attention.".......2007-09-29

This book is based in part on an Oct.2004 meeting bewtween the Dalai Lama & a group of western neurologists & psychologists to discuss the mutability of the human brain. The main positives of this book are that it is meticulously researched, & yet concise. But, despite the title it is not a self-help book. One should not expect any life altering experiences. This is a history of neuro-plasticity, a cerebral trait discovered by neuro-scientific experiments some twenty years ago. The books central message is that the brain/mind can change when we want it to. The techniques of mental discipline can be learned, & our negative traits reduced. Here eastern philosophy & meditation meets western neuro-science. When the reader is interested in the latest developments for treating dysfunction & depression, or in the mental deterioration brought by aging this is a good place to start. Basically, the adult brain retains much of the plasticity of the developing brain, to change the circuitry that weaves neurons into the networks that allow us to think, feel, dream, remember, & suffer. Some findings show that changes can occur by certain mental activities: like learning a language, or playing a musical instrument. To a degree, the neuro-science does blend with the buddhist belief that our reality can be created by our own thoughts & projections. I have learned that meditation can truly help alter ones feelings, especially in dealing with grief & depression. The book explains in detail how various experiments, training methods, & therapies can change the adult brain. It has shown a remarkable ability to cope with unexpected changes, like blindness, recovering from a stroke, etc. The crucial changes in the brain can willfully overcome neural problems like dyslexia, etc by changing its own circuitry. However, the book does not actually answer all of the questions it poses. I was also a bit taken back that the Dalai Lama would condone animal testing? His statment that the larger human community would benefit from the experiments felt expedient to me. Still, this is a four star book for all the data it contains.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising science: new about neuroplasticity. .......2007-09-06

For nearly a century, scientific dogma held that the brain is immutable, fixed by genes and early upbringing. Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley recently visited the frontiers of neuroscience and returned with a news flash: The dogma is wrong. Researchers have discovered that the brain remains plastic, lifelong. This creates new frontiers: Stroke victims can rewire their brains using challenging exercises; deaf people can repurpose dormant auditory cortexes for other tasks; and blind people can begin to "see" patterns of Braille dots using a seemingly dead visual cortex. Suspecting that they were on to a general pattern, researchers soon looked for similar changes in "normal" brains. Working repetitively on your golf swing, playing the piano or learning a language, they found, also change your brain in lasting, important ways, as does practicing compassion toward others. Begley arrives with heavyweight friends: a foreword by the Dalai Lama and a preface by Daniel Goleman of Emotional Intelligence. If you want to understand how the brain keeps working, and how to make yours do more of what you want it to, we think you should start here. Your brain will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Change your Life.......2007-08-23

Reading this book will change your life by providing scientific proof that humans can change their brains through meditation. The book is readily accessible to the non-scientific/technical reader and the sections involving the Dalai Lama are fascinating. Those interested in neuroscience, meditation, improving one's quality of life, or in the mysteries of the brain will enjoy this book. Educators and parents will also will find this book as inspiration because it suggests a radical new approach to educating and developing young minds.

The unknowing progenitor of a whole generation of self-help books, Wally Piper's The Little Engine That Could is one of the greatest tales of motivation and the power of positive thinking ever told. In this well-loved classic, a little train carrying oodles of toys to all of the good boys and girls is confronted with a towering, seemingly impassable mountain. As nicely as they ask, the toys cannot convince the Shiny New Engine or the Big Strong Engine--far too impressed with themselves--to say anything but "I can not. I can not." It is left up to the Little Blue Engine to overcome insurmountable odds and pull the train to the other side. The Little Engine That Could is an entertaining and inspirational favorite, and the Little Blue Engine's rallying mantra "I think I can--I think I can" will resonate for a lifetime in the head of every child who hears it. 4 out of 5 stars My son loves this book!.......2007-10-15

I have a 2-year old son and he enjoys looking at the pictures in this book. Since it's small, he can take it anywhere. He hasn't ripped any pages yet! I would like to buy the full-size book later. I think the full-size one will be better for storytelling. Shipping was so fast we got this book in no time!

4 out of 5 stars Great classic, beautifully illustrated, with a few suprises.......2007-10-12

There are many versions of this story and I had read several to my 23 month old son when I decided to have his 2nd birthday theme be trains. I wanted something other than Thomas and remembered this beautiful story about the kindness, persistence and rewarded effort of a little blue engine. My son, like most, loves trains and now asks for the "Little Blue Engine Think I Can" story almost every night. If you appreciate original illustrations and timely references to toys gone by, you'll love this book. Surprise - the trains are female - no big deal just different from the norm. Also, the original version is much longer than others, (no so good for 2 yrs.) so I skip over or shorten some of the sentences and will read more details as he gets older. It's a great classic.

1 out of 5 stars Too Small.......2007-09-21

I wish I would have looked closely at the dimensions of this book. It's so small!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Children's Book.......2007-09-15

This is an all-time classic because it is such a classic, and as much fun to read aloud as silently.

3 out of 5 stars Curiously small size book.......2007-04-18

Be sure to check the dimensions of this book. It's smaller and thinner than the typical children's book, and it's even smaller than most board books. It's a cheap price and good size for travel, but you may be surprised how small it is.

A must for any soft tissue therapist. This completes an understanding of how the body is affected by a series muscles.

A huge topic with tons of minutia that is broken down in an easy reading format. I really liked the way the book is set up. Great way to look at the body as a whole and to start thinking about alternative and complimentary modes of treatment up the kinetic chain that you may not think about before reading this book.

Anatomy Trains is an accesible and comprehensive overview of the myofascial system of the body. This key to understanding the role of fascia in healthy movement should be required reading of anyone who works in the bodywork field.
It may be a bit ponderous to someone who is more physically inclined but do not be put off. You will find you absorb much through just forging through as I did.

An excellent read that discusses the functional relationships of muscles within the body. A must have for any student or practitioner of bodywork of any kind.

1 out of 5 stars Uhhh what?.......2007-09-28

Luckily I didn't spend money on this book because it gave me a headache just trying to get through the first chapter. The writing is SO BAD. I can't believe she collaborated with someone and this is the best they could do. It jumps around so much and alot of the book has nothing to do with Anna at all. I figure the reason for that is Donna's writing what she knows and she DOESN'T KNOW ANNA. It's all old news and assumptions. I could have written all the "secrets" that are in this book. Most of the photos are of Donna's family which sure they're partially related, but these people don't know Anna.

If you *have* to read this book, do what I did, and go to the library.

1 out of 5 stars grave-robbing at its best... .......2007-09-22

one word: trash. i bought this book because i felt, well, that no one could probably tell us the personality of this strong woman (and anyone who has gone through what anna nicole smith went through is definitely strong). i figured her sister would clue me in about the culture that brought this young woman to a tragic end. i must say, it is not there. this book would probably amount to "gossip" and nothing else. if you want to read everything you have already heard in the media, it is an okay read. if you are curious about anna nicole's life, this book won't offer you much.

5 out of 5 stars Train Wreck.......2007-09-12

I thought this book was very interesting. I have never been a fan of Anna but found this book to be a good read.I now understand Anna a little better and see that she really had a very sad life. If you are a fan or not this is a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Love you Anna!!!!.......2007-09-09

Good book, I ordered it the second it came out. Very nice cover and image, beautiful packaging. Donna Hogan is a decent writer. I think she might have been false on a few things but over all it was good and worthwhile for Die-hard Anna fans like myself. I LOVE ANNA NICOLE!!!!!!! Been her biggest fan since she came out. She is the most beautiful creature to have ever graced this planet and it is a shame she is gone. Rest is Peace Beautiful and keep the books comin!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars "User-Loser".......2007-09-08

Donna Hogan is just exactly what Anna said she was a "user-loser". She is trying to get her 15 minutes by trashing her half sister who she obviously really knows nothing about. Everything she claims to know comes from the media. She is the epitome of "trailer trash" and too ignorant to realize it. She thinks that her own sleeping with married men and whoever else will have her makes her worldly and sofisticated and that her use of Anna's name to further her causes is ok, yet she trashes her half sister who doesn't appear to have done anything worse than she herself has done. I wish I hadn't purchased this book because I hate to think of her succeeding in making money from trashing her dead sister. She is disgusting.

This was my sons' favorite story book at age 3 or 4. The language is advanced, with much more challenging vocabulary than a modern book would use for preschoolers, but it wasn't a problem, so it must be a good thing!

5 out of 5 stars Stories that have aged well.......2005-11-15

Having been exposed to the contemporary "commercial" version of Thomas the Tank Engine in various forms I had low expectations for _The_Complete_Collection_. After reading all the stories over the past two months at bedtime I whole heartedly give this collection 5 stars. These are the original stories by Rev. W. Awdry--not just Thomas stories, but other trains that have been forgotten by the marketplace. The language is the Queen's English and the terminology harks back to a different place and time. Fortunately the stories are robust enough to hold up without translation for my 3-year old.

While there are rude engines, naughty engines, and ample portions of just deserts as noted by another reviewer; I find the stories to be well balanced and if the young listener isn't careful some life lessons may be learned--really useful engines are happy engines. One aspect of these stories that broadens their appeal is "Each story is based on some odd incident which has happened to some engine, somewhere, some time." (quoting the author in the foreword) Many times I found myself laughing, or shaking my head and nodding in agreement with the outcome of the story. There were several stories whose full meaning was lost on my 3-year old, but never-the-less hit a tender spot with daddy. The most requested stories are those that involve Thomas and his familiar cast of friends. In October 2005 Random house published a selection of these Thomas stories that might suit an audience not interested in small steam engines or narrow gage railroads (the additional stories in the collection). For those that have an interest in trains beyond simple children's stories this book will be a pleasure to share with your young railroad enthusiast.

The edition I am basing my review on is a 1999 Random House Printing. Unfortunately this title is out of print at the time of this review, but you may still be able to find new or like-new copies through resellers. Should this book be republished, and in my estimation it is well deserving of another print run, I would encourage the publisher to include an index at the end with references to the particular engine and what happened to him. A frequent request is "Let's read the story about James getting pushed down the hill by the trucks", or some other engine and circumstance--it would be useful to have an index.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Thomas Book.......2005-10-13

I got this book a long time ago and I must say, this book is a must have for anyone even remotely interested at all in Thomas.

This book includes many of the stories on television, as well as never before seen stories and characters. And the incredible sense of realism in this book is inevitable. If you can read this book and see something incredibly unrealistic, besides the fact that the trains can talk, then you obviously have the wrong book.

Want to know how Skarloey and Rheneas celebrated their 100th birthday? Want to see Henry rescue two broken down diesels? Want to see special trains climbing mountains? If so, grab this book and enjoy. You will recognise many of the stories, ans also find some other tales as well. Many characters you will recognize, some others maybe not. Either way, this book is a 100% must read.

And to the soccer moms that didn't like the book, you obviously have no sense in realism and reality. I know that the book versions are a tad bit darker than the televised tales, but they're much, much better. Just because Duck said "Shut up!" once, or Henry got stuck in a tunnel and refused to come out (didn't you even read the story AFTER that one? where he comes out?) and there's no silly chindish morals doesn't mean that kids shouldn't read this book. If you want your kid to enjoy the real lives of these famous locomotives, please stop squalling and read the book.

Signed,

~Reagan Wolf

P.S. Somebody should publish Christopher's Awdry's books soon. Dang.

It was a delight to read of the origin of Thomas and all of his tank engine friends. The stories speak for themselves - cherished childhood tales that have stood the test of time.

Book Description

The third book in the breakout Core Performance series offers cutting-edge training for the endurance athlete

Mark Verstegen launched the core training revolution with Core Performance, which broke new ground in fitness with its intense focus on the muscles of the core—shoulders, hips, and midsection. Now Verstegen provides an exciting new application of his powerful Core program, addressing the special needs of the endurance athlete.

Core Performance Endurance :

• helps endurance athletes at all levels—whether they’re competitive swimmers, hard-driven triathletes, or everyday joggers—avoid the injuries that too often sabotage their performance

• delivers the desired combination of strength and stamina, balance and flexibility, athletic quickness and power that the endurance athlete strives for

• provides an endurance-oriented nutrition program—complete with recommendations for pre- and post-race eating

This book not only helps endurance athletes train more effectively, but also gives them a potent regimen of core training that will help them move more efficiently, thereby staving off overuse injuries and long-term deterioration.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for those wanting to go to the next level.......2007-08-01

This book shows you some new teqniques for improving your form and strength.
The section on the foam roller has been invaluable to me.
The book sort of ends quickly....I wish there was a bit more on implementing a program.

5 out of 5 stars An Innovative Work Out.......2007-04-09

Core conditioning meets endurance training in this manual geared toward endurance sports. This is a great program to work on with a friend.

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas, but a coach or video is necessary.......2007-03-20

This book looks nice with its colorful pictures, charts of exercise programs, and glossy paper.

Also the idea of working one's core in order to achieve stability seems to be an important development in endurance training.

However, many of the exercises need someone as a supervisor in order to ensure that one's form is correct. Also I developed more pulled muscles after starting the program without proper supervision.

If you choose this one, take your time, but remember that with endurance sports swimming, biking, and running are the best ways to improve.

4 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from Core Performance.......2007-01-17

First, the good. I've been a big fan of Core Performance workouts since reading the first book by Mark Verstegen. As I shifted toward more endurance sports like triathlon, I found the original book to be less helpful. Core Performance Endurance is the long-awaited combination of a core conditioning program with endurance training. On this most important point, I think Verstegen has again come through in a big way. Workouts emphasize flexibility, core strength, and injury prevention. Days are divided by emphasis on "strength", "power", "regeneration", and "rest". The idea is that, through this approach, an athlete will train efficiently and get the most results for the effort expended. What most people would call the "cardio" work is here referred to as "energy system development" or ESD. ESD work is done on most days, but it varies between slow days at less than race pace, relatively short intervals at race pace, and brief intervals at greater than race pace. The goal is to use the combination of approaches to improve the lactate threshold, the point where muscles start to "burn" and increase the level at which an athlete continuously perform without lactic acid build up. This flies in the face of "more is better" training, and it is consistent with the most recent advances in exercise physiology.

The Bad. If you are expecting a spoon-fed workout, you will be disappointed. The ESD workouts do not specify which sport is to be performed. That approach would work best for a pure runner or biker. For a multi-sport triathlete, it leaves a fair bit of the work in designing the program to the individual. For instance, should a swim be combined with a "power" day or a "strength" day? Should one alternate? How should "brick workouts" (two sports one after another, usually biking followed by running) be integrated? I like to take a hands-on approach to the details, but I can see how many might be put off by this. This book should properly be considered a foundation to an endurance exercise program, helping an athlete maximize their results and prevent injury. It should not be considered the whole program in itself.

The Ugly. An athlete progresses through stages (i.e. A, B, C) and levels (1, 2) that increase in length of time and difficulty. When ready to go to "level 3", you are instructed to go to the website, coreperformance.com. The problem? It's a site that REQUIRES A PAID MEMBERSHIP. I thought this was pretty sleazy. I don't think I would have bought the book if it had been marketed as "Two Thirds of Core Performance Endurance". When I first read the instruction to go to the website, I was pretty steamed. I was ready to dash off a 1-star review and trash the book. After I cooled down, I decided that, had there NOT been a 3rd level at all, I would have thought the workout was still pretty darn good. Judging the workout program by what is between the covers, I am reasonably happy. I decided to do my best to inform potential buyers and let them decide if it was a deal breaker or not. Consider getting the free trial offered at the site before buying the book, just to see if you think there is any value added for you.

So, for an excellent and innovative workout, I think Core Performance Endurance delivers. It would have been a much better book if it wasn't also a teaser for a subscription for an online exercise program run by the author. 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the Core Performance library........2007-01-07

I have been a fan of the CP approach since the original book. As a trail runner and mountain biker, neither of the previous titles addressed training and injury-prevention particular to my interests. Core Performance Endurance applies the already widely praised and very effective techniques of Movement Prep, Prehab, Elasticity, Power and Strength Training to the particular demands of cycling, running, swimming and other "lung" sports.

A great deal of space is devoted to "Tissue Management". The human body takes quite a pounding during endurance training but these techniques, combined with proper movement patterns and nutrition can prevent over 60% of the injuries commonly experienced by endurance athletes according to the authors. This information alone is largely ignored in other published material and easily justifies the purchase of this book.

The nutritional information provided is state-of-the-art, practical and effective. They know what an endurance athlete's body demands and dispell many prevalent myths that are ineffective at best and potentially dangerous at worst.

The material is clearly presented (they've learned what works from feedback regarding the previous books) and there are plenty of new tricks for those already familiar with the CP methodology. As a program it is very flexible and realistic for those who already have to squeeze in rides, runs and swims in-between work and family responsibilities. Many other books on this subject assume you've got endless time and opportunity to work on increasing your VO2 Max.

Other reviews have mentioned needing to purchase additional equipment to do some of the exercises. While this is true, all of the workouts can be performed with a minimum of equipment, most of which would fit in a bike bag or small duffel. This is a cutting-edge program and the investment needed for the additional equipment is modest compared with the return. Additionally, Mark Verstegen suggests a number of low or no cost alternatives should you not wish to purchase more equipment.

Whether you're gunning for a PR in the Leadville 100 or running your first 5k, Core Performance Endurance has got you covered. Highly recommended.

The authors are British and the work is heavily focused on British and Commowealth locomotives. Fairly ignores a myriad of interesting and innovative German locomotives.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2004-05-03

I am a train fanatic and I know a good reference book when I see one, and this book is one of the best I've ever seen. I have refered to this book at least fifty times at the railroad (whose name is undisclosed) that I work as a volunteer at. Simply an amazingly informitive book that I would recomend to any train fan of almost any age.

3 out of 5 stars Large book but has some short comings.......2004-03-19

The book is a fair to good encyclopedia of trains. It has a large number of foreign engines. Most of the photos are taken from the front and one side and not in profile. The Little Joe appears to be a A-unit but is in fact an A-unit on both ends. The pictures are not very large. Profile drawings would be a good addition.

It is not complete for North America and leaves out many novel, limited production engines like the S-1 Turbine and General Motors Aerotrain.

Some specifications are not available like engine length on many engines. Engine length and height are useful when determining whether a model is scale or not.

It is a good book but did not meet all my expectations and I am still searching for a more comprehensive guide to mainly North American locomotives.

Book Description

The never-before-told story of one of the worst rail disasters in U.S. history in which two trains full of people, trapped high in the Cascade Mountains, are hit by a devastating avalanche

In February 1910, a monstrous blizzard centered on Washington State hit the Northwest, breaking records. The world stopped—but nowhere was the danger more terrifying than near a tiny town called Wellington, perched high in the Cascade Mountains, where a desperate situation evolved minute by minute: two trainloads of cold, hungry passengers and their crews found themselves marooned without escape, their railcars gradually being buried in the rising drifts. For days, an army of the Great Northern Railroad’s most dedicated men—led by the line’s legendarily courageous superintendent, James O’Neill—worked round-the-clock to rescue the trains. But the storm was unrelenting, and to the passenger’s great anxiety, the railcars—their only shelter—were parked precariously on the edge of a steep ravine. As the days passed, food and coal supplies dwindled. Panic and rage set in as snow accumulated deeper and deeper on the cliffs overhanging the trains. Finally, just when escape seemed possible, the unthinkable occurred: the earth shifted and a colossal avalanche tumbled from the high pinnacles, sweeping the trains and their sleeping passengers over the steep slope and down the mountainside.

Centered on the astonishing spectacle of our nation’s deadliest avalanche, The White Cascade is the masterfully told story of a supremely dramatic and never-before-documented American tragedy. An adventure saga filled with colorful and engaging history, this is epic narrative storytelling at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical perspective of a forgotten catastrophe..........2007-06-25

Don't know why I was prompted to pick this book up...my husband is in a search and rescue group, so that was partly the reason. I read the info given on the back of the book, and having grown up in Northern CA and being a voracious reader, I thought I should have heard about this one transportation disaster. My father was born up in Washington, but somehow this one has faded from national consciousness.

What really struck me about this book is the straightforward writing of the author, Krist. He doesn't sensationalize, as some other books on disasters tend to do. He is honest and reflective, gives the reader all the information on both sides, and lets them draw their own conclusion. I especially enjoyed the information about the court trials and the aftermaths. We can dislike the typical corporate image that continues to run big companies (only now they are the pharmaceuticals who could care less...), but we also recognize that the men who dealt at the closest part of the railway with this disaster most probably did as good a job that could have been done. Unlike the Titanic, where there were some very dismaying behavior by many who were at the helm of the boat and the company, most of the rail workers, especially the superintendant who oversaw the whole week of work around this avalanche were hardworking and gallant, who did make a few mistakes but nothing overt.

By showing us how the courts handled this particular case, plus the information that came from the newspapers that did sensationalize this happening, Krist lets us see why we have come full circle to another place that if this case were tried today, it would have ended very differently for the company. Krist makes a good case for why the ending verdict was probably right (but probably would not have been reached in this era of lawsuits we are currently in). However, he also points out the impact that this case and other transportation disasters of that time had on labor and safety laws in this country. He draws a good diagram for the reader for why this trainwreck led to our current safety requirements and the change in attitudes of people towards corporations that were in control during that time period. Now we need to turn our eyes to the corporations that are currently out of control in ours...perhaps Krist would like to take some of them on?

5 out of 5 stars A good story told well.......2007-05-13

This is non-fiction at its finest. As the story unfolds, you almost wish you could get a warning to the poor passengers whose fate is all but inevitable. The author expertly weaves together the series of events that led to the disaster, providing insight into the decisions that were made from those in charge. As the snow continues to fall, adding layer on top of layer, the many characters in this story slowly become individuals with whom you can sympathize.

The story takes place in 1910 at the peak of the railroad era. The automobile and airplane are introduced as only bit players. All of the background information is perfectly balanced with the drama that unfolds atop the mountain.

There is no single mistake that led to the accident, but Superintendent James O'Neil is guilty of two mistakes that might have made a difference: His refusal to meet with the passengers and his refusal to negotiate with the laborers involved in snow removal.

This is a fast read made even more so by the author's clever use of cliff-hanging chapter endings. I highly recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars The White Cascade and our genealogy library.......2007-05-13

I ordered this book at the request of one of our genealogy society members. It came soon after I ordered it and I have not had time to read it myself because some of our patrons are waiting to read it. The woman who requested that I order it said it was the best of any of the books ever written about that disaster. We have several other books about the disaster as it happened in our area but it appears this one is the very best as it has been well researched and is well written, keeping the reader's interest to the very end. It is particularly interesting to genealogists searching this area.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful book.......2007-05-07

This book had if all and I have purchased several as gifts. I wish it could have gone on forever. I learded more about the West, Ameican econimy what life was like back then, values and morays of the time and of course the history of the railroads. It was all brilliantly woven togther with the stories of the people involved. It was never dull very easy to read yet covered some very complex issues. It got you totally involved and it was as if you where there experiencing the cold, the danger, nature and the wonder of how it would all end.

5 out of 5 stars White Cascade.......2007-04-12

Great insight into the thinking of the man responsible for keeping this train route open through incredibility bad winter snow conditions. Lots of insight on how the railroads operated back then. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this exciting account of the railway disaster.

Book Description

This book is not about discipline, nor problem children. The emphasis is on the training of a child before the need to discipline arises. It is apparent that most parents never attempt to train a child to obey. They wait until the child becomes unbearable and then explode. With proper training, discipline can be reduced to 5% of what many now practice. As you come to understand the difference between training and discipline, you will have a renewed vision for your family—no more raised voices, no contention, no bad attitudes, fewer spankings, a cheerful atmosphere in the home, and total obedience from your children.

A couple, stressed out with the conflict of three young children, after spending the weekend with us and hearing some of these principles, changed their strategy. One week later, they exclaimed, "I can't believe it; we went to a friend's house, and when I told my children to do something, they immediately, without question, obeyed."

These truths are not new, deep insights from the professional world of research, rather, the same principles the Amish use to train their stubborn mules, the same technique God uses to train his children.

1 out of 5 stars This book is Horrible!.......2007-10-15

This book should be pulled from this site! It advocates child abuse plain and simple. The things written in this book made the blood drain from my face and my heart skip a beat. Tonight I will be praying for the children suffering under such "parenting" methods as listed in this book and I will hug my babies a little closer.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ THE BOOK BEFORE REVIEWING, PEOPLE!!.......2007-09-30

This book is great. I was looking for a blog to discuss the Pearl's stuff, because I love it, and I found two or three websites telling people go and write a review of the book....WHEN THEY HAVE NOT EVEN READ IT! From the 30 or so comments I read, the ones that were negative sounded like this..some even admitted to not reading it.

COME ON! Read it, and find out for yourself. It is a great book. Spanking is not abuse, contrary to some people's opinions. However, I would agree, there are people who were abused or have anger issues that should not spank children because they do it in their emotion and not for discipline. But even the Pearls focus on TRAINING and not heavy handed discipline as the key! Discipline alone will not work without training.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Chalked full of practical effective advice!.......2007-09-24

This book is wonderful. I know others don't always agree with everything but everything works and nothing is dangerous about it when APPLIED properly. The scriptures are sound and properly used. I've used this book and have two sons (2 & 6) that no one can deny they are the happiest kids they've met. I'm not sure where it began but I've noticed some people have forgotten their grass roots on how their parents applied correction and have become soft and complacent regarding it. I see children crying in Walmart throwing themselves ridiculously & foolishly--crying out for a boundry from their parental guideposts and no one answers. There's no excuse for this kind of behavior from parents or children. Children need correction, just like we did, it shows passion which is love. It shows you care enough to set them straight when they stray. Think about it, when you're in your daily routine headed for failure and someone stops you and gently directs you back on course, doesn't that make you feel good about them and yourself. It should, they cared enough to take time to help you and you didn't make another mistake.
Real life example: A sad and recent prime example of why parents need this book is reflected in the life of my brother. Throughout their son's life, he was never corrected, he went through violent stages of childhood of kicking and biting. No correction just continuous excuses for his behavior & plain meaness. Never given any moral direction or discipline for reinforcement. To make a long story short, now he betrays his own mother with lies and deceit all-the-while befriending my brother's mistress. (I know, Wow) Your children will bring you shame too if you don't train them while you have the chance, moreover, the responsibility.
Society has harvested some of it's untrained, uncorrected and unloved. Thus the historically higher suicide rates, teen pregnacies and dependencies, "looking for love in all the wrong places."
This book is chalked full of practical effective advice and it works. It should be a required parental read.
I noticed the reviewer above disgruntaled remarks regarding the book's recommendation of tugging the infant's hair to get the infant to stop biting while breastfeeding. That's just practical for most people, maybe she would prefer presenting a 500 page essay explaining to the infant "baby has poor behavior and how that hurts mommy when you bite" A simple tug will do... Now, they didn't say pull the baby's hair out! (o: But you shouldn't have to pull yours out either! Remember, Application is everything, use with love always! Never correct while angered! Only correct disobedience, never for lack of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars How's that working out for ya?.......2007-09-21

Well, my response to the few others that have made negative responses to this book is - so what is it that you do instead that works so well?! I've read the reviews of people who have taken all the Pearls have said out of context to make it look like you should just walk around with a big whip and hit your kids often for no reason. Come on guys!! That is not what it says. READ THE BOOK. If you have all the answers, you don't need this book, but if you are frustrated because you are living in a child-run home, then buy this and apply it. There isn't much out of context that you can do with "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him." Try it out, it works. My kids are the talk of the town and they love me too - they don't cower in fear. Will your kids stop on a dime when the speeding car comes racing by in front of them? The Pearl kids will!
PS For the lady who got tears in her eyes over pulling the hair of the biting baby - ever been bit by a baby????? Talk about tears in your eyes!! I know one mom who refused to thump the baby and quit breastfeeding in fear of being bitten! I've got a 7 mo old that learned to quit biting and has learned not to touch "no, no" items. Happiest baby you ever saw! If they can remember what their bottle looks like or know a familiar person or blanket, they have the long term memory to remember that biting is counterproductive. If you choose to make it so...

1 out of 5 stars A Guide to Abusing Your Children.......2007-09-16

Another book about how to beat children.

I won't harp on it being awful and terrible and whatnot because at a certain point it's just redundant.

I will say this, most of the "discipline" suggested in this book will land you in jail.
