Book Description
This is the anatomy and physiology text written especially for students and practitioners of massage therapy. This edition integrates massage therapy concepts within the anatomy and physiology content, including sections that discuss how massage interacts with the body systems. The book covers all of the major body systems--integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems--that are crucial to effective massage therapy, and provides an overview of other body systems to give students a well-rounded understanding of anatomy and physiology.
Customer Reviews:
The worst.......2005-02-21
I curently teach Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Kinesiology and various bodywork modalities at three separate, well known massage schools. This is the worst A & P text I have ever come across. I do not make this statement lightly. For 12 years I've recieved countless complimentary copies from major publishers and nothing compares to this mess.
It was obviously thrown together in a hurry to get it out there as "the only A & P text written for massage therapists".
It is poorly written. In most chapters, it offers little more than lists of terms and definitions. It has no consistency in text, nor in use of pictures. This text offers few examples, nor analogies, and it rarely explores the hows or whys of A & P. Its weaknesses are endless. My current students find it completely innaccesible. Heck, I can barely read it.
Prior to the start of the school year the owner of one school asked my opinion on switching to The Massage Connection. My opinion to him - don't do it! He decided to use it anyway. As luck would have it, he has ended up teaching portions of A&P. The result: The Massage Connection will not be our A&P text next year. He hates it as much as I do.
Sure, my review is harsh, but fair.
I just do not understand what Williams & Wilkins was thinking when they allowed this text to go to print?
Good book for learning A and P.......2004-09-10
I used this book as one of my references for learning anatomy and physiology in massage school. The book is pretty easy-to-understand and I think it definitely helped me through school. I also loved Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Patrick Leonardi. These had great questions to review for my A and P tests. There were lots of pertinent questions that were needed for preparing for my exams. These three books made learning A and P much easier for me.

Book Description
Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06
This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.
I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.
I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.
Johnson is "magic"!.......2007-07-09
This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.
The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.
Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13
I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.
Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.
I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.
Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.
This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.
So far, so good.......2007-05-11
Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.
Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.
I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.
The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.

Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology.......2003-04-12
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

Book Description
An ancient therapy used in China, Egypt, and India, reflexology provides effective, holistic treatment for both common and more serious disorders. According to reflexology, the hands and feet are microcosms of the body, containing points or zones that relate to individual glands, nerves, muscles, and organs. Reflexology harnesses the body's healing energy by stimulating specific pressure points on the hands and feet, alleviating the energy blocks that can cause pain or disability and restoring optimum health. In The Reflexology Manual, the practical text guides the reader in mastering these self-help techniques, and color photographs illustrate a full reflexology treatment step by step.
Full-color illustrations throughout.
Detailed diagrams of pressure-point zones on the hands and feet.
Clear explanations of how to work with the energy meridians.
Ideal for beginners as well as experienced students of reflexology.

book recieved.......2005-09-25
Book recieved as promised, which is more than I can say for my other independent orders I placed on amazon! This was a gift and I have not seen the book in person, but the recipient said it looked brand new and they thought I had actually ordered an unused copy! Overall, I am very pleased with the transaction. Thanks so much!
Excellent Textbook.......2004-03-27
I highly recommend this textbook on reflexology. The illustrations and written text explains in detail the technique involved in reflexology. excellent book.
Lots of color photos.......2003-12-16
I bought this book for my wife, but was a little unsure of what I was going to get, because the description is a little lacking.
It turned out to be pretty good, though. There's 144 pages with a semiglossy finish.
The thing I like best about it is that virtually every page is filled with large or multiple, full-color photographs or color diagrams.
Massage techniques are numbered sequences.
It seems very thorough, and although I don't plan to read it, my wife was very pleased with it (she was also relieved that I didn't get The Idiot's Guide to Reflexology, which seemed like another good beginner book).

Book Description
Moves reflexology beyond the realm of foot massage and into the realm of sexuality.
⢠Offers acupressure methods to build intimacy and heighten sexual pleasure.
⢠Helps couples find their sexual energy potential and physical compatibility.
⢠Provides techniques to perform time-tested Taoist sexual-spiritual exercises.
⢠By Mantak Chia, coauthor of The Multi-Orgasmic Man.
The most powerful reflex points on the body are on the sexual organs. While the practice of reflexology is normally associated with massage of the feet, in Sexual Reflexology Mantak Chia gives applications for using the sexual reflex points in lovemaking, transforming sexual intercourse into a form of ecstatic acupressure. By combining the classic Taoist sexual texts with modern reflexology theory, the author provides a unique opportunity for couples to practice sexual intimacy as an act of healing.
Mantak Chia shows how to evaluate a person's sexual energy potential as well as how the size and shape of the sexual organs determine a couple's compatibility. In addition to the specific ecstatic acupressure exercise instructions, he provides thoughtful commentary on ancient Taoist practices that reveal how we can all use our sexual essence to create healthy and loving relationships.
Customer Reviews:
Now I can last ALL DAY LONG! .......2007-09-12
I have read ALLOT on sex and really most of the information out there is terrible ESPECIALLY in contrast to this book! This is the first and only book which had a drastic positive effect on my sexual performance.
I went from good to WAY better and with all the exercises on the book I am just getting even better at heightening and having control over my sexual energy through the exercises they give. YOU WILL GET GREAT RESULTS FROM THIS BOOK IF YOU DON'T DO THE EXCERCIOISES! Especially the chapter Sexercise has a great effect. The exercises heighten your sexual energy, make your erections harder and with the focus on breathing I think has also significantly make a big difference on how I can last AL LONG AS I WANT! Seriously I can last all day if I want, but GF tends to get sore after too long but the point is you are in control, and just having more sexual vitality which gives you more OVERALL VITALITY. The chapter exercises is my favorite chapter and when you can last as long as you like you can practice all the moves in this book for longer periods of time.
To me though this book is not just about sex but longevity and feeling great, and it goes beyond just sex and into how being sexually healthy makes you more healthy in general..
I probably
Will not ever buy another sex book ever, because this books gives me all the solid foundation I could ever need, so anything outside this book will just be my own creativity.
The exercises may seem tedious at first, but do them you will get results and with some consistence you will notice significant results!!!!
THIS LITTLE BOOK HAS SO MUCH STUFF PLEASNTLY JAM PACKET WITHIN NOT VERY MANY PAGES. Which gives you less time needed reading so you can be having more sex : )
As far as the exercises go though I advice you study the nerves in the penis and be gentle with your penis! Not enough caution is given in the book I believe.
Also as far as reserving your seed I stand in the middle ground. I believe there is a point of no return, and really I believe not to excessively let lose but to every now and then releasing is better then not. Try both ways and go by your own feel. I don't believe EVERYTHING, but most of it I experienced as true. I learned SOO much great stuff.
total waste of money..........2007-06-13
Sometimes you see a book cover and read the summary, and think you picked a good one, and only later find out you got suckered. I guess that's the risk one takes buying books online. Well ... I got suckered on this one. This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. It went in the trash 5 minutes after I received it.
If you want a really good book on accupressure (packed with stuff that works), then check out another book I purchased called "Accupressure for Lovers: Secrets of Touch for Increasing Intimacy".
informative and written nicely.......2006-07-09
Being brought up with little knowledge in this area, this book very nicely presents sex in a positive, interesting and informative way. Not only physically and spiritually, also the healing powers of sex and relationships. I like how the book presents the material, some of the exersizes seam silly, however each to his own.
poor.......2005-12-29
I have the feeling this book has been more put out for comercial reasons using some taoist knowledge.
It has a few good reflexology relations some good exercises specially the healing positions. The physical caracteristics and the sexual reflexology chapter is a bit poor in judgments that I do not believe being part of the taoist knowledge....
new approach to sex.......2005-10-26
As a practising reflexologist, I found this book to be of great interest. In Europe many of us view sex in very a negative light, i.e., its dirty, something to feel guilt or ashamed about, or at the other end of the scale, a recreational sport, that should have no emotion attached to it.
This book not only teaches us how to view sex as a spiritual adventure, but in great detail tells us how to actually use it for healing purposes.
The chapter on how to read what someone is like sexually, by reading their faces, has given me and my friends no end of amusement, a must for anyone single, looking for a partner, I have been reading everyone, from celebrates to the post man ever since. I.E. lips equal in proportion means you can give or receive sexual pleasure in equal amounts, a bigger top lip, means you prefer to give pleasure, and a bigger lower lip, means you are a 'taker.'
A great read, takes sex to a whole new level.

Great to learn patterns for ears and hands.......2006-03-13
I am very pleased to use this book along with a previous purcahsed VHS from the author. It is clear, definitive and well written. It will help me as I teach reflexology to my students. Charts are very good.
Surprising technique.......2001-05-03
Okay, so I'm a nurse and dedicated to the medical establishment from which I draw my livelihood! I also have great respect for scientific methodology. That said, I also have to admit to an innate curiosity about alternative approaches to health care, and so when my license needed 30 CEUs for renewal, one of the courses I decided to take was one on reflexology. I purchased The Joy of Reflexology for that course and began reading it with more than a little skepticism. Although it suggested that practicing the art on oneself was less effective than doing so on another subject, I happened to have no one else at hand on whom to practice the techniques, so it was me or nobody. I was totally prepared to pooh-pooh the entire thing as so much bumpkin, when I discovered that the very unpleasant hip pain from which I was suffering at the time resolved and didn't return when certain pressure points on my feet were massaged as indicated in the text. Since I had been kept awake nights over the preceding several months, turning over and repositioning myself about every half hour trying find a more comfortable way to rest, I can tell you I was fully prepared to eat crow when the massage technique worked! True, a population of 1 isn't the best statistics, and a test on oneself is hardly the makings of a double blind study. So, coincidence? Maybe. But I got the first uninterrupted eight hours of sleep I'd gotten in months! I'll take it. Thank you Miss Gillanders.
not bad, but can be a lot better.......2001-01-16
The book is not bad, really, and it does contain useful information about reflexology, however I would describe its layout as nothing but sloppy. Many repeated pictures and explanations lead me to think the authors tried to make the book longer (thinker...) than it has to be. Realistically, you would be more likely to buy this book if it is 120 pages, than if it is only 60 pages :-).
There are many mistakes (one picture shows one thing, the next one conflicts and so on...). However, the book is still useful, and I would believe what the other reviewers said.
My 2c.
This book has been extremely helpful.......2000-10-05
I bought this book in 1996 and have since then used the techniques to help my wife deal with her Crohn's disease. I am writing this to let people out there know that reflexology works. If at the very least considered a relaxation method, we have experienced noticeable improvements in her condition after a few sessions. Four years later, we still use it whenever the need arises. For those of you debating whether to attempt this method, I would say you owe it to yourself to try it out. I hope you have as much if not better success than we have had.
good with detail.......2000-03-29
This book explores the theory of reflexology which says that by massaging our feet and hands (the outermost extensions of the body) we can stimulate certain body parts. This book includes sections on stimulating every major system of the human body along with tips on relieving certain common health problems. Each movement has an illustration complete with directional arrows so you cant go wrong. This is a great book to read if you want to help your loved one relax after a hard days work. Even if you dont believe in the theory of reflexology the massage movements still make the book worthwhile.

Great for learning reflexology.......2003-08-05
This book is well-written and excellent for teaching reflexology. In fact, this book was a helpful reference for the national certification test for therapeutic massage and bodywork. My study group and I also used the following for the national certification exam:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3
The last three books were excellent for helping my study group and I prepare for the type of questions asked.
If you're serious about reflexology, THIS is THE book to own.......2000-06-12
I agree completely with the previous reviewer. This book is truly "The Definitive Practitioner's Manual" as the title states. And if you plan to practice reflexology professionally, this is THE book to own. It's more costly than most of the other reflexology books available, but well worth the investment.
The most comprehensive reflexology book ever!.......1998-07-07
This book is concise, clearly written and easy to read. It includes the usual topics covered in reflexology books e.g. what is reflexology, history, how it works, zone theory, etc. Plus it covers areas that few other reflexology books have covered before: setting up a practice, consultation procedures, hand reflexology, ear reflexology and face reflexology.
It touches on all aspects of reflexology and health, mental, physical and spiritual. As the title says the definitive guide! A must for every reflexologist.

Customer Reviews:
What Is Breema?.......2000-10-27
I am sure that many who have happened onto this page are wondering to themselves....just what is Breema®? Is it like some sort of Thai massage? Breema is like, and is complementary, to all forms of bodywork, but it is also uniquely different. A large portion of the people who have received Breema bodywork comment on how parts of their session remind them of other bodywork they either do or have received...at the same time, they comment on how different it is to the various types of bodywork they have given or received.
Simply put, Breema is a method of mediation and bodywork aimed at connecting us to our essential nature. This is a comprehensive book that, without actually having to become Breema practitioner or receiving a Breema session, can give the reader an intrinsic understanding of exactly what Breema is. Essentially...it is guide, a direction, a teaching in how to live in harmony...with yourself, with others, and with life itself. The uniqueness of Breema is not in its form, but in how we learn to approach what we are doing with the form. The bodywork, along with its principles, becomes a tool to connect to our essential nature. In reality, Breema is ourselves as we truly are, not as we think we are. When we are present and living with the principles of Breema, everything we do becomes Breema. We are existence giving to existence. Once we connect to the principles of Breema, what we freely give to ourselves, we automatically give to others.
The manner in which this book was written allows the reader, if they choose, to open to one page and read a few lines, or just look at one picture, and get a "taste" of all that Breema is about...simplicity, connection, openness and receptivity to life. Of course, the impulse is to read more...and for some like myself, to learn more. This is the kind of book one never grows tired of. It is always new and fresh, allowing the reader to gather new perspectives with each and every reading.
At each moment in time the individual experience for each person will change, the bodies themselves will change, the minds involved and the concepts they hold, or let go of, will change. One of the things that is so beautiful about Breema is its inherent receptively to this understanding. This sense of understanding is part of our true nature. Learning about Breema can be helpful in bringing us back to that simple, nurturing part of ourselves.
Breema is a service mark of The Breema Center
A vital book to read for anyone who wishes to know oneself........1999-09-29
This book truly expresses who man is as an energy system and what his relationship is with himself and existence as a whole. Through the simple, natural Breema bodywork method as expressed here, one can come to the vitality of body in its natural state, and then the inner wisdom which recognizes Existence as a whole. A simple, practical guide which truly reveals the Essence of this precious method.
