Book Description
Increasing a child's competence and trust
Attachment-based play can help build the intimacy that creates the healthy parent-child interactions that are so vital to a child's development. This is especially true for children how are troubled by emotional or learning difficulties. The thoroughly revised second edition of the author's classic work Theraplay offers clear, easily understood guidelines for professionals and parents to a dynamic and proven approach for treating children with attachment and relationship problems.
Based on the work of the founder of the renowned Theraplay Institute in Chicago, this new book explores how to use play to communicate love and authority and shows how this effective form of treatment increases a child's competence and trust. A comprehensive resource, the book offers effective techniques for working with special populations including children who have been adopted or are in foster care, victims of trauma or abuse, and youngsters with autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Written in a clear and instructive style, Theraplay is an excellent guide for both parents and professionals who work with children.

It is very helpful........2007-03-31
This has many wonderful suggestions for working with children and parents.
A book to refer back to again and again!.......1999-06-28
I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book. As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is very exciting to find a method of working with children that offers practical and impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you may already be doing. I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at the Theraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the Theraplay Certification process. Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particular child, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model has given me pervade my work. Parents of children that I am using Theraplay with often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior and attachment to them in a short period of time. One father of an internationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going to be able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were taking him to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us. Theraplay has allowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress in other areas of development."
The model of using parents as co-therapists, as presented in the book, is very empowering to parents and the parents I use Theraplay with have many positive comments to say about this. One foster/adoptive mother recently told me she thinks that every foster or adoptive parent should be required to learn Theraplay. She adds "It has given me a whole new understanding of my adopted children and their needs."
Theraplay is not only useful for children with attachment and bonding difficulties, but I have found it particularly useful for children diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. This is a comprehensive book that you will refer back to again and again.
This book offers elegant solutions to complex problems........1999-06-13
Jernberg and Booth explore attachment beginning in the nursery, what it looks like when all goes well and when it doesn't. Difficult concepts are presented in ways that make them highly accessable. The beauty of this work, is in the solutions that are offered. As I read this book, I found my self saying repeatedly, "this make too much sense." After reading Theraplay, I registered for the next training offered in Chicago. Anyone working with children in most any capacity would benefit from this well researched, time-tested work. Reading this book and attending the training has had a tremendous, positive impact on my work as a child therapist.

Play Therapy with Children in Crisis, Second Edition: Individual, Group, and Family Treatment.......2007-03-09
It was cheap and brand new!
good overview for beginners.......2000-07-04
boyd does a nice job of providing solid overviews of major crises that impact the lives of children, such as abuse, illness, divorce. however, the book doesn't provide in-depth coverage of any individual topic. for those just starting out, the book gives a good general idea of assessment, treatment planning, and some specific techniques for use with this population. however, for those with more advanced skills, the book falls short of providing information that will enhance practice. an excellent grad school textbook, or for those who lack experience with this population. the book does provide good tools for use in assessment, and does cover the assessment process in depth. the chapter on childhood bereavement is particularly good.
good overview for new professionals.......2000-06-30
good general overview of how to treat children whove experienced a crisis. the material on assessment is very helpful and detailed. each chapter is writen by an expert in a particular area of childhood crisis. since the book covers so many potential sources of trauma, there isn't really as much in-depth coverage of each topic as i would've liked to see. the book seems to be geared more to entry level professionals than to those experienced in dealing with childhood crisis and trauma.
Customer Reviews:
Practical, useful information.......2007-01-11
I became interested in Narrative Therapy at a conference for gifted children. I bought this book after it was recommended to me by one of the presenters who has used this therapy for several years. I have found it very clear to understand and have begun using the techniques that are described in the book. I would highly recommend this book to any therapist who is interested in exploring a different way to work with children, not only gifted but typical children as well.
Great tool for working with kids!.......2006-03-22
This is a great book for counselors and therapists who work with children. It has both a narrative and solution focused approach to helping children overcome their problems. I like the way it helps adults relate to children on their level - the level of play. A book all school counselors should have on their shelf.
Useful techniques but not grounded in real life practice.......2000-07-19
I would be more than happy to give this book a five star review but for a few key, significant complaints about narrative therapy. The main one is that no therapeutic failures are ever presented in narrative texts (including this one). This leads me to wonder if the authors' political, or politically correct, agenda is not more important than the clinical aspect of the work.
An example is the situation here where the therapist feels she must confront a client's racist remarks. It is presented as an imperative - that the therapists' needs at that point in the session are of supreme importance, given the context of the therapists' socio-political righteousness. I agree that racism should be challenged, and I am sure I am in accord with the therpaists' views here. But this is not the point.
After Ms. Freeman confronts the client about the racism the therapeutic relationship evolves to an epiphany in which all are blissfully healed - this is standard narrative mythology. In most psychodynamic literature (and real clinical practice) even skilled therapists sometimes suffer an empathic failure that leads to an adolescent leaving therapy. Young people are extremely sensitive to being judged, and it takes a very strong relationship, grounded in the clients' needs, to contain this type of intervention. Better still, the therapist should embody her/his beliefs in their being rather than by pontificating. A righteous stand like that presented here would stand at least a 50-50 chance of rupturing a therapeutic alliance. You won't find a book called "Failures in Narrative Therapy". This is not because failure is a 'construction' or some other bit of sophistry, or because therapeutic ruptures do not occur. It is because narrative therapy has yet to attain a level of maturity where it can admit that it, too, is an errant art that demands transparency and empathy, not preaching to the client out of the therapists' needs, no matter how noble.
All that said, many of the storytelling methods presented here are useful for working with children and their families. But please hold the self-congratulation, narrative enthusiasts.
Helpful and well writen.......1998-12-06
Provides original solutions to tough and common problems. I found that I was able to apply the concepts and suggestions, both personally, and in my practice, effortlessly. I bought it for every therapist I knew.
An easy to read book about new ideas for child therapy........1998-06-18
Playfull Approaches is an engaging book that makes the complex simple. A therapist parent or teacher will be spurred to creativity about even the most recalcitrant child. The authors work with children is presented in a literary form that puts the reader right inside their thinking and the world of childrens ideas. There is an excellent chapter on the use of expressive arts so its not just about talk therapy. The book shows how to put children in charge of their own healing and in touch with eachother. There are a number of extended case "stories" that are fascinating and educational.
Book Description
This book offers a survey of the historical and theoretical development of the filial therapy approach and presents an overview of filial therapy training and then filial therapy processes. The basic approach of filial therapy is to train parents to act as therapeutic agents with their own children through a structured format of didactic instruction, demonstration play sessions, required at-home laboratory play sessions, and supervision in a supportive atmosphere. The book will also include a transcript of an actual session, answers to common questions raised by parents, children, and therapists, as well as additional resources and research summaries. Additional chapters will address filial therapy with special populations, filial therapy in special settings, and perhaps the most useful resource for busy therapists and parents, a chapter will cover variations of the ten-session model, to allow for work with individual parents, training via telephone, and time-intensive or time-extended schedules.
Book Description
Now in a thoroughly revised and updated second edition, this volume presents a variety of play approaches that facilitate children's healing in a shorter time frame. Invaluable for all those optimizing limited time with clients, the book describes effective methods for individual, family, and group treatment of children struggling with specific disorders and life challenges. Featured are detailed, session-by-session guidelines and lively clinical illustrations that bring diverse techniques to life. In the second edition, all chapters have been revised, some with new authors, and five new chapters have been added on bipolar disorder, PTSD, family and group sand play, and parent training approaches.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for parents of disturbed children........2001-05-09
Very insightful and helpful. Pick this up.
Book Description
"At a national conference, I presented a workshop entitled "Do Children Hate Family Therapy?" The attendance was good. Too good. Clearly, the title struck a chord, because children often seem to dislike family therapy. And who could fault them for it? The fact is that many family therapists either exclude young children or do not know how to involve them actively in family sessions....
"This is where Dr. Gil's new book succeeds so wonderfully. By drawing on her extensive training and experience as both a child therapist and a family therapist, she shows us how to use all family members' capacities for expressive play simultaneously. Never before have we been treated to such a variety of family play techniques that are presented in such vivid clinical detail....Her methods are captivating to read about and described with sufficient depth so that the reader can visualize their application in everyday clinical situations." --From the Foreword by Robert-Jay Green, Ph.D.
In Play in Family Therapy, Dr. Eliana Gil provides a hands-on guide to a wealth of play therapy techniques for working with children ages 3 to 12, and shows how to adapt these techniques to conjoint family therapy. Illustrating the inexhaustible potential that play techniques hold for enhancing relatedness, communication, and understanding among families, this essential new volume represents a major step toward merging child and family therapy.
Chapters in Part One cover the history of play therapy and the integration of play into family therapy. In Part Two, clinical vignettes illustrate in user-friendly detail the application of such techniques as puppet interviews, art therapy, and story-telling. Dr. Gil covers the presenting problems and family configurations clinicians are likely to encounter when working with children. Throughout, the text describes the problems that may arise--such as family members' reluctance to use play--and shows how to overcome them by setting a positive tone and conveying the expectation that families will find play enjoyable and rewarding.
Providing clinicians with useful play techniques with which to expand their repertoire of family interventions, this work will be invaluable to all therapists and students who work with children and their families.
