I hated what to expect when you're expecting. I found it totally paranoid and annoying. This book, however, was very useful. I enjoyed the monthly breakdown of developmental skills and issues that might come up. It's in a question/answer format, which is easy to read on only a few hours sleep.

An absolute must for the intelligent parent. This series is not for the paranoid (it will only make you more obsessed about where your child "ranks" amongst otherchildren. This great easy to read book series (what to expect when you are expecting,... the first year... the toddler years) does just what it says it does. It gave us a guide to lessen the shocks and surprises that my daughter kept in store for us. It also helps me to gauge if any social or developmental abnormalities are occuring so that I can seek help if neccesary. Because of this series (in good part) When my daughter had her first peanut reaction on her 1st birthday I knew what was possible, watched, caught it, and got her medical attention immediately. I now carry a life saving Epi-pen. If you are now paranoid , don't get the books. If you can be rational and want to be aware, then run to get it, love it.

Its a useful book for any new parents. It begins by explaining what essentials to purchase for your new born, breast feeding vs. bottle feeding, post parteum then it goes into depth for the first year fo your baby's development. An ESL text you really "can't live without".......2006-12-02
Research in second language vocabulary acquisition demonstrates that learning idioms is one of the most important aspects of acquiring a second language. ESL students who do not understand idioms will not be able to understand a large portion of the English language. Consider that an ESL student can understand the grammar of the phrase "kick the bucket" without having any clue as to its actual meaning. Furthermore, ESL students who do not understand idioms will have a much harder time fitting into the culture of native English speakers. This struggle can be severely detrimental to a learner's intrinsic motivation, which is one of the most important factors influencing language learning success. A Year in the Life of an ESL Student: Idioms and Vocabulary You Can't Live Without is an outstanding resource that addresses this important issue of idioms by teaching ESL students an expansive number of them in an engaging and enjoyable manner.
As to the expansiveness of the text, it provides idioms that address a wide variety of situations from attending a TOEFL class to suntanning on the beach. The following examples give a glimpse of the range of idiomatic expressions that students will learn: "better late than never," "cover for someone (to)," "hangover," and "work one's butt off (to)." The presentation of each idiom is clear with each of them first appearing in bold letters in a stimulating dialogue. This feature of the book is beneficial since research has shown that lexical items are much better remembered when learned in authentic contexts. As the author states, "Context is the key to making the daunting task of understanding and using idiomatic English not only possible, but enjoyable too." The dialogues are followed by pages where each idiom is placed in glossary format. After that, there are a significant number of exercises for students to learn the idioms interactively.
Beyond meeting a need in the ESL community, the other aspect of this text that makes it so successful is its engaging style. Many language learning materials present grammatical and cultural information with pictures and other helpful graphics; however, when it comes to vocabulary and idioms these items are often still presented in lists. On the other hand, A Year in the Life places idioms in interesting dialogues that often contain humor and are related to the actual experiences that an ESL student may have. In addition to the dialogues, learners also have the opportunity to learn idioms by playing games. Two common exercises found throughout the book are crosswords and word searches. The realistic dialogues and the exercises make learning the idioms interesting and fun.
Considering the need for a text of this kind in the ESL community and its engaging style, I would recommend it without reservation to both ESL teachers and students. A Year in the Life will lead learners into a much more native-like competence.
Good application of the lexical method........2006-11-20
Michael Lewis caused quite a stir in the world of ESL when he published his "The Lexical Approach" in 1993. Lewis's point was basically thus: ESL students are force feed too much English grammar. The idea that grammar can be mastered and then students fill in the blanks with vocabulary is naïve, according to Lewis, and makes it difficult for students to understand natural English phrases such as "Let's have a coffee," because students have only studied "Shall we drink coffee?" Having taught English to Japanese students, who are taught grammar and only grammar in high school, I found this to be a huge obstacle. Lewis's book caused a huge sensation on the ESL teaching community, and many teachers thought they didn't have to teach grammar anymore, it was fine just to teach idiom after idiom. Lewis followed up a few years later with a book on how to apply the lexical approach, saying that it is idioms, expressions and grammar are not so far removed from grammar. In other words, idioms and expressions should be taught as a part of grammar.
Since Lewis shook up the ESL world, there have been attempts to bring out commercial textbooks that implement the Lexical Approach. However, most of them are not so different than previous textbooks, with traditional grammar the focus of the lesson, and idioms kind of tacked on as an afterthought. "A Year in the Life of an ESL Student" does a good job of introducing idioms as an integral part of communication, not just as an added bonus. Colorful idioms such as "Drink like a fish" or "toss one's cookies", as well as expressions that are not idioms, but present difficulties to ESL students, such as "mope around" are presented in natural conversations, and than reinforced through various exercises, such as crossword puzzles, word find exercises, and so on. Many ESL students have the goal of being able to watch Hollywood movies with no subtitles. Just studying grammar and straight vocabulary will never allow this to happen. However, this book will equip students with hundreds of natural and useful expressions that will help them understand and by able to speak more natural English.
The book focuses on a Swiss student, Andre, as he studies for a year at a private language school in North America. All of the conversations in the book involve Andre and his friends at the language school. Students will like this because it makes the stories easy to follow and understand. Teachers will like this book because there are lots of good exercises in each of the 16 chapters, making it easy to teach good lessons with no or very little preparation. Then there is the theme of this book, studying language abroad for a year. This should be the goal of many of your students, and if it is not, studying with this text will hopefully get them interested in the possibility. For classes with more advanced students, this can be a good springboard for a discussion on the topic.

Francis Nails It!.......2005-09-01
Never before in my 20 years of E.S.L. teaching have I seen a better idioms textbook. A Year in the Life is simple to use, is extremely comprehensive, and helps meet a need for relevant, structured, higher level material dealing with spoken English. There are a variety of exercises and activities that can be utilized/skipped according to needs and tastes, and the extensive definitions and examples make it possible for students to learn correct usage at home. All in all, a great find for students and teachers alike. Bravo Mr. Francis!
An Invaluable Work Book.......2005-05-23
One of the most challenging difficulties teachers of a second language face is creating an atmosphere where the learning process becomes meaningful and at the same time practical, painless and enjoyable.
From my own personal experience learning French, it was only when my ear became tuned in to the nuances and subtleties of the language, and I ceased translating from English to French, that I achieved a certain amount of fluency.
One of the keys that aided my personal plight was being immersed into situations, where I had no alternative than to make myself understood to individuals, who could not converse in English, such as in a shopping mall, a restaurant, or hotel.
When I picked up a copy of Edward J. Francis' A Year In The Life Of An ESL Student: Idioms And Vocabulary You Can't Live Without, I asked myself, would life not have been far simpler if I had at my disposal this excellent workbook?
Francis is an ESL professional with over 15 years of teaching experience. He has put together an innovative and creative workbook that serves as a compliment to the classroom teaching of English as a second language.
Specifically, through the various exercises included in the book, students are exposed to a variety of practical circumstances, wherein certain words and idioms are regularly employed.
Rather than just providing vocabulary for the sake of language, students are stimulated by true- life situations rather than abstract concepts.
Divided into sixteen chapters, the workbook format follows the life of André, a student from Switzerland, who spends a year in North America in a private language school learning English. André experiences include his arrival in the country, wandering around the city, sitting in the student lounge, attending a TOEFL class, eating dinner with a roommate, shopping in a mall, picking up a friend at the airport, a day at the beach, waiting for a fireworks show, working out at a fitness club, drinking in a bar, catching a movie, driving to a cabin for the weekend, finishing classes, snowboarding and returning home.
Each chapter is set in motion with a conversation between André and another party, wherein certain key words and idioms are identified and printed in bold letters, and subsequently defined. As an example, where André works out at a fitness club, some of the key words and phrases are tuckered out, cleaned up my act, kicked the habit, pooped, carried away, do wonders for and many more.
This is followed by a series of exercises where the words are reinforced by having the student match the words/idioms, use them within sentences, complete a cross word puzzle, rewrite sentences using the word/idiom from the dialogue, fill in the blanks, comprehension questions, discussion questions, and identifying where certain words were more apt to be heard.
Also included at the back of the workbook are a list of related websites to the topics covered, answers to the exercises, and a glossary of terms.
No doubt, the traditional methods of teaching a second language are passé. Gone are the days when students only regurgitated vocabulary and rattled off verbs without integrating what they have learned into everyday situations. For the most part, with excellent workbooks as, A Year In The Life Of An ESL Student: Idioms And Vocabulary You Can't Live Without, there is recognition that what is the key to learning a second language is creativity, innovation and experimentation in the classroom.
This workbook should be a must for anyone who wishes to learn English, and will definitely prove to be an invaluable learning aid.

Some common sense, but much dangerous information sprinkled with politics.......2007-09-30
It's unfortunate that the American Academy of Pediatrics would use this book to push their political agendas about gun control. On page 389 it says
"The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly supports gun control legislation. We believe that handguns, deadly air guns, and assault weapons should be banned. Until handguns are banned, we recommend that handgun ammunition be regulateed, that restrictions be placed on handgun ownership, and the the number of privately owned handguns be reduced."
People who are buying this book are looking for baby advice, not political garbage. It's sad that AAP would stoop so low to include comments such as this.
They also make dangerous recommendations about how to put your child in the car seat on page 411:
"Place a small rolled up diaper or receiving blanket bewteen the crotch strap and your baby to prevent his lower body from sliding too far forward."
This is contrary to manufacturer's recommendations with car seats and any seat that uses a seat belt. In an accident the rolled up diaper/blanket would compress and cause the belts to be too loose, potentially causing additional injury or even allow the baby to come out of the belts/seat altogether.

My pediatrician gave me this book before my daughter was born. Similac pays for them. It was a helpful resource to know what she should be doing and signs of problems. While I wouldn't buy it, it was nice to have while she was little.

I wanted to like this book...but..........2007-09-03
During my pregnancy, Your Pregnancy Week By Week was my constant companion. I looked forward to reading the chapters for each week, learning about my baby's development, and considering different baby-related issues as my pregnancy progressed. The book was user friendly, cleanly laid-out, and easy to follow. Logically, as I was looking for books about infant care, I considered Your Baby's First Year Week By Week.
The layout of the book was similar to Your Pregnancy Week By Week. It included the familiar weekly chapters containing useful nibbles of information about what to expect from my baby and what kind of care to offer him. It covers a wide variety of issues, including baby gear, bathing, diapering, pets and babies, and all the things you would expect from a comprehensive parenting "manual."
However, as I dove below the surface a bit, I was disturbed at some of the content and appalled at some of the blatant errors I found in there. The most shocking example was in reference to the care of uncircumcised baby boys. The authors advise parents to gently retract a baby's foreskin to clean. Every reliable medical source, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, states clearly: don't ever retract a boy's foreskin, as forcible retraction could potentially lead to problems later in baby boy's life. I was also very upset to see the authors' take on breastfeeding, which again contradicted the official positions of the AAP and the World Health Organization. If Your Baby's First Year Week By Week can't even provide reliable information on these two fundamental infant care themes, then I don't feel inclined to trust the knowledge of the authors in any other matters.
In the end, I put this book back on the shelf and opted instead for a copy of Dr. Sears' Baby Book. I would strongly advise any expectant or new mother to give Your Baby's First Year Week by Week a miss.
Excellent book for those with COMMON SENSE.......2007-08-09
This is a wonderful book. It tells week by week, what the AVERAGE baby will be doing. It can be used as a wonderful guide to know how to assist your baby in growth, or it can be used as a guide to drive yourself insane because your baby is not doing a certain thing by a specific week. For example: Babies get their first tooth at the average age of 7 months. Since some babies are born with teeth, that means some must not get them until they are a year old. If you are the type of person who can see the book as a guide, it is a great one. If you are paranoid or a hypochondriac. DON'T BUY IT!

I'm surprised by this book's bad reviews. This is my favorite baby book! I actually gave away my other baby books and kept this one. I saw all of the reviews when I was online buying a copy for a friend! I like how the book discusses baby's development week by week and the milestones are fun. The book has practical information and it's an easy read. Maybe to minimize distress, new parents should realize that their baby's development probably won't track precisely with the book's week by week discussions since every baby is different.

I must admit that I am a little baffled by the negative reviews about this book. I have many parenting books, but this one is one of my favorites. I don't bother getting too technical about what exact week my son is on, but I guesstimate which chapter to read by the month guidelines in parentheses in the chapter headings. This organization style works really well for me, actually. I love reading the short chapters when I have a minute during naptime or bedtime. I skip over anything that doesn't interest me and use the index to reread any sections that I have an immediate interest in--i.e. rashes if I see a red spot on my son's skin. The developmental milestones in the book have corresponded amazingly well to my son's progress. Sometimes I didn't even notice a new ability or behavior until I read about it in the book and then recognized it in my baby.
My favorite part, though, are the Toys and Play This Week sections at the end of each chapter. I love these extra songs, games, and play suggestions that correspond to my baby's development, and so does my son. The book is worth buying for those alone. I have not agreed with all the advice in the book, certainly. I use cloth diapers and I have not fed my child as many types of solid foods as the book recommends for a baby of his age, for example. But like many other parents, I have lots of different books and I like to read the different opinions and then do what my doctor and I think is best for my baby. Babies are so different and parenting advice so varied that I can't imagine there is a book out there that would completely, 100 percent correspond to my baby and my parenting style. I wouldn't take anything I read in a parenting book as incontrovertible truth. The bottom line for me is that this is a wonderful book to use to get a general idea of what developmental milestones to look for in your new baby and find some creative games to play with your child as they progress through their first year of life.

This book was our bible!!!! It went with us everywhere. We had our first son and didn't know what the heck we were doing! He had alot of issues in the beginning with jaundice, acid reflux, diaper rash, fifth's disease, you name it and this book answered so many questions for us on whether or not we were overreacting or being safe. I read the other reviews on the book and maybe it wasn't on point on the one subject for that one reviewer but overall, the book covers nearly any problem that may arise and gives some sound advice that worked great for us and since, my sister, 2 cousins, 3 friends and a 2 co-workers...I highly recommend!!!!!!!

Not be the best book for those using Attachment Parenting.......2007-09-18
There was a spot in the book that I didn't particularly like. It was about co-sleeping. Although it was claiming not to be putting down co-sleeping, it was definately inferring that it was better not too, I felt that it was putting the undertone suggestion that it wasn't the best thing. That children need to be able to self sooth etc...We are strong advocates for Attachment Parenting, and very researched in this area, and those related topics around it, and it is not correct to assume a child won't learn to sleep on their own, if not put in an alone situation, or that they will some how miss out on skill's like calming or soothing themselves, if you don't push them more quickly towards independence. Children will grow independent, on their own time table, and because of the attachment you unselfishly allow when they are young, which is not pulling away the security they need, they become more grounded, having been allowed to mature on their own, and reach towards independence step-by-step when they are ready, they grow up feeling secure. When children grow up feeling secure, that were not rushed into sleeping in their own bed, or forced to stop Breastfeeding before they are ready, etc... These people grow up more secure and independent than otherwise. Our Daughter just turned Three and still sleeps with me, and i'm in no hurry to move Her anywhere, and She's a very happy person, and, with no issues, and growing more and more independent on Her own, anyway, everyday : )
This does NOT mean that we put down any other Parents for anything they are doing, or whats right for them. Thats not what I mean. We have Friends that Parent in all different ways. I just wanted to say my peace about the co-sleeping, for some Families like us, it works, and has turned out to be a great experience, and I don't agree that it is some how any kind of a negative. For us it's a definate Positive!

Jane Nelson once again provides sound, practical advice for creating a positive energy household. Our 4 year old had us spiralling out of control until we read this book and made some simple changes and became more understanding of her developmental capacities.
Perfect helper when you need it most!.......2006-03-13
Our daughter has just turned three and wow, what happened? We feel like we have tried everything for discipline from time out to consequences and even the "S" word. Nothing really works. My friend recommended this book and it really does help. It's not the end all and be all of all books but it reminds you to think on their level and gives you good ideas for when you are faced with those very tough moments. I must say they suggest a positive time out, which I thought was CRAZY but figured I have tried everything else so why not? It really does work and continues to work. The best part is that I make it her choice and most times don't even have to get mad. I simply say, if you are going to behave that way (explaining the bad behavor, i.e. not playing nicely) please go to your time out corner until you are ready to come back and play nicely and sometimes she goes running in there crying (and then will return letting me know she is done and ready to play nicely) and sometimes she'll stop and think a moment and say, I don't need time out I can play nicely now. It's amazing.
Great advice, but have support.......2005-09-27
Dealing with preschoolers, as any parent will tell you, is a challenge. How do you deal with this little being, that is both independent and dependent, at the same time? Nelsen, et al, have provided a common sense approach to raising preschoolers.
The ideas that are presented in this book, when used properly, are incredibly powerful. An example of this is recognizing the message being sent by the misbehavior of a preschooler. If you can identify what the message being sent is, then you have a greater chance of being able to redirect the behavior. Of course, you have to be willing to take the time to analyze the behavior and define what you are willing to do in response to the behavior. While the tools provided in this book are very powerful when used properly, they can also be very damaging when used improperly. If you have someone that can read the book with you and provide support, you will be much more effective at implementing the strategies successfully.
This book provides an idea for raising children without using humiliation or punitive measures to get short term changes in behavior. If you are looking for support for the, "My parents raised me this way and I turned out just fine." mentality, then find another book. If on the other hand, you are looking for a book that provides a basis for what I would consider to be an improved method of dealing with preschoolers, then this is your book.
The one thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is that it fails to address immediate safety issues. In many cases the book suggests plans that are implemented after you have had a moment to consider your response. It would be helpful if the authors provided some ideas as to how to respond to potentially dangerous situations without losing your cool and still treating your child as a human being who has control over their own actions.
Best guidance for a lost parent.......2005-09-07
WOW!! My 4 year old has been pushing me to the limits and all I kept thinking was that I was failing. This book has put so much into perspective for me and has given suggestions on how to handle situations. I don't yell as much and I don't get angry either. I have a better understanding of my daughter's mindset and it has helped with my 17 month old too!!

Concise and Worthwhile for new parents on Child Development.......2007-08-13
I purchased this book because I want to make sure that I keep a keen eye on my child's development the first year. This includes, knowing when something is wrong, knowing when he is behind in developing and normal activities that my child enjoys each month as they progress. This book provides all of that in a concise month to month format. Each chapter is broken down into the following sections: Overview, Images in Development (includes, to name a few: Motor Control, Perception, hearing, cognition, vocalization), Developmental Close-up (includes, to name a few: sleep/wakefullness, motor reflexes,crying, colic).
I don't have a lot of time to read about these things and don't want a book that talks over my head and this book is perfect for this requirements. For example, one of the things my infant does is to bend his arm at the elbow and place his palm nex to his head while the other arm is straight at his side. I thought this was just a cute thing he did but upon reading the book realized this a reflex called "tonic neck reflex" and should disappear by month six. If it has not then my child needs to be tested for a neurological disorder.
As a parent, it is imperative to know what to look for as your child develops. A pediatrician can only diagnose what he sees or what you tell him about. I would not have known to look for this reflex and its continued existence past 6 months without this book. This is just one example of how this book has helped me.
I recommed this book over the Dr Spock books anytime. If you want a book on how to calm your baby in the first three months of life you HAVE to get the book and DVD called" The happies baby on the block".

I think this book is a helpful guide. It is a quick, easy read when you are using it by the month. "Baby Steps" gives an accurate overview of where your child is at physically and emotionally--just as the title says. I feel like it sheds light on the mystery and subtlety of a new baby for a first time parent.
Fascinating 'guidebook' for your babies develpment........2005-12-20
The book covers child development from birth to 24 months, with a chapter corresponding to a month of the childs life. Each chapter covers Motor Control, Perception, Vocalizations, Cognition, Social Development and one or two other topics such as crying, physical development milestones, socializing etc.
I've found it fascinating to watch our twin boys develop and read about their developmental progress in this book. It's very easy to read, gives a lot of information without delving too much into actual physiological reasons for behaviours/abilities like a lot of other Developmental guides.
My only complaint is that the print quality of the book is very poor, and my copy also had sections of text actually missing due to printing errors. Hopefully these problems will be rectified, as it really is an excellent read and I'd highly recommend it for new parents!
