Great book for the "alternative' mom.......2006-08-28
If you are into herbs and natural health and pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant this is a must read! Full of wonderful information and very well written. Was my favorite book during pregnancy and beyond.
Good book about herbal childbearing.......2006-06-16
I really found this book useful. I've had it for many years and was looking for an herbal book for childbearing when I got it. I have several herb books but like the fact that this one zeros in on one subject. I wasn't really interested in the part about aborting babies, though. All in all, the book is very readable and interesting.
A must have for any woman who is expecting........2006-03-14
I just ordered two copies of this wonderful book for my office. I have a small healing center and women who come to me are into a more holistic and natural way to experience pregnancy and childbirth. This book is a wonderful friend to keep handy throughout your pregnancy and birthing experience. Ms. Weed lists a number of herbal preparations to use for the varying issues that come up during the 'waiting' period and the birthing also. Try it....
Book Description
It's in the news: American children are too fat and this is resulting in an alarming increase in type 2 "adult onset" diabetes in children under the age of 12. Dr. Naomi Neufeld recognized this more than two decades ago when she began seeing an increasing number of overweight children in her office as a pediatric endocrinologist - children who were not just 20 to 30 pounds overweight, but 50 to 100 pounds overweight and children who were as young as 6 years old.
The KidShape

Included are "The truths behind the myths about food," "Seven lessons for fit families," fun exercises, and healthy recipes.

EXCELLENT book for facilitating a weight loss group for kids or a family!!!.......2007-05-12
I bought this for my dear sister and her husband who I lovingly call food "stupid" becaluse they can't seem to understand basic concepts of healthy food choices. THey are both thin but their son (12) is overweight due to emotional eating. THis book is very easy to read for any parent or adult who is wanting to educate a child or a group of kids.It offers step by step and DOABLE plan of action. I purchased the cookbook for ny nephew and he absolutely loves it and has been cooking from it -- at 12 years old! recipes are delicious!!
Book Description
Aimed at parents and coaches of organized sports, this easygoing and friendly discussion of unrealistic performance pressure avoids medical jargon and outlines both physical and emotional milestones that determine sports skill development in youth. Revealing that body chemistry, thinking skills, and emotional maturity all play important roles in athletic training, this guide introduces differing developmental timetables, emphasizing that a focus on personal accomplishments is a much more effective practice than a focus on simply winning. Clever chapter titles proceed from "First Serve" and "Free Throw" to "9th Inning" and "Final Lap and Cool Down," with each chapter providing a questionnaire that gauges a child's readiness for the skill levels discussed.

Great read, easy and extremely informative!.......2007-05-21
This is an incredible treasure for the parents and coaches of young athletes. It is very well written, easy to understand and thoughtful. Dr. Stricker's knowledge on the subject of physical and emotions developmental levels of children and the impact this has on sports is supurb. Being a parent of athletes himself give a uniques perspective to the book.
Do you know any parents who push their kids to perform in sports way past the "fun zone"? This book is for them, but it's also for those of us who are trying to make sense of the increased commitments that are pressed upon our youth involved in most sports today.
A Must Read !.......2007-01-12
This book is great! A must read for coaches, especially of very young athletes. As a parent, I gained alot of knowledge and felt this book was a reputable source of information. This book explains so much about what kids can actually do, compared to what is expected of them.
The nutrition information is very helpful and I learned alot there as well.

Inspired by the revolutionary bestseller Toughlove®, a guide to help parents discipline their children with love and consistency
Toughlove® was an international bestseller and one of the first guidebooks for parents of extremely troubled teens. The Toughlove® Prescription picks up where the million-plus mega-seller left off, helping you discipline your children, who live in a world saturated by cell phones, the Internet, and graphic displays of nudity and violence. Dr. Ron Zodkevitch helps you apply the Toughlove® techniques to more-common problems such as a messy room, smoking, and homework. He also incorporates a new, four-step program for you to reach out to your teens.

Working Out the Tough Issues of Raising a Teen.......2006-09-24
This book helps parents answer tough questions like:
Can you enforce a bedtime on a 15 year old?
What if your child cheats on a test?
Is it OK to read your child's diary?
What do I say if the child asks if I used drugs?
We can't agree on discipline.
Toughlove for Tough Times.......2006-03-02
Dr. Ron's book offers keen insight and understanding into the troubled waters of parent/adolescent interactions. Parents of unruly teens will find many valuable tools and tips to help them build a bridge while still demanding accountability. This is a long overdue followup to the Yorks' pioneering work, and I think will become *the* survival handbook for parents of troubled teens.

Thank You!.......2003-03-12
I felt so much more empowered after reading this book on miscarriage. I have read several and whereas many I found good, this one struck a powerful cord in me! I believe this is due to the fact that an actual doctor wrote this book. He acts concerned for the woman as a whole. He also doesn't patronize with the "just wait and it will happen to you" statements. He seems to truly understand how a miscarriage plays with a woman's mind and emotions. I wish I had him as a doctor after my own 2 losses.
The book that offers answers.......2002-05-17
After suffering two miscarriages and getting no answers or help from my doctor, I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of Dr. Sem's book at the local library. What I got from his book was information that empowered me to make wise decisions about prenatal care and answers to questions I had about my miscarriages. I later had the good fortune to meet Dr. Sem and have him as my obstetrician. I can honestly say he practices medicine unlike any doctor I've met. He is sincere, compassionate, and caring. He also takes time to listen to his patients and to get to know them personally. My husband and I feel very fortunate to know Dr. Sem and can never thank him enough for helping us to have two beautiful, healthy boys. Thank you Dr. Sem for having the courage to share information other doctors don't want their patients to know and for doing everything you can to make every pregnancy count.
Life changing!!.......2001-06-14
Reading this book LITERALLY changed my life! After suffering through 2 miscarriages and being told that I would have to endure a third before my doctors would try any testing, I was enlightened by Dr. Semchyshyn. His book is informative and sensitive. I used the references in it to obtain the names of maternal-fetal medicine specialists in my area (a title which I had previously never heard of). I learned a tremendous amount about the possible causes of my problems and was able carry on an intelligent conversation with the maternal fetal medicine specialist whom I chose for my care. I felt empowered by becoming a well-informed patient and no longer felt at the mercy of the medical establishment with regards to testing. This book gave me information, hope and a sense that I was not alone. Testing revealed that I needed progesterone supplementation in the first trimester and I am now the happy mom of two beautiful, healthy boys.
Gives explanations and instructions.......2001-03-18
I am a owner of the book and a patient of the doctor. I have found that the book offers explanations to problems, offers education of the signs and symptoms that other doctors just ignore and offers alternative instructions to helping your next pregnancy be healthy and explains how every mother-to-be has to become "literate" about all of her body signs and partner with her doctor to ensure a successful pregnancy. Most doctors just want to tell you what to do, have time for limited questions and quickly get you through their busy offices. This is one doctor who truly lives up to the high standards of professionalism he discusses in his book and always tries to answer any questions from patients or worried mother-to-be's with questions from all over the world. After following the instructions in this book and partnering with him during my last pregnancy to become pregnancy literate, I delivered a healthy baby boy in August 1998 and look forward to delivering another healthy child in Sept. of this year. All of his patients only have great things to say about him and the sincerity of his caring about making every pregnancy count. I wish all doctors would be trying to save every pregnancy as much as this doctor does.
How to prevent miscarriage: lie down and take progesterone.......2000-08-11
With one ectopic pregnancy and two miscarriages, I am looking forward to a healthy pregnancy next time. But it won't be thanks to this book. The title is misleading. The main advise is: when you feel or think something is wrong: see your gynecologist, go to bed and try progesterone. After reading te book I can only conclude: there are no ways of preventing a miscarriage. And his so called 97.5% succes rate for bringing healthy babies to term in his high risk pregnancy, is an absolute mysterie to me.

There is help for parents in pain over their children.......1998-05-19
"Help! I'm suffering from a sexually transmitted disease - CHILDREN!"
Most parents, at one time or another, qualify for a medical alert bracelet with that message. Form the terrible twos to the empty nest blues, even "normal" parenting brings in its share of pain -- and for some parents the hurt reaches epidemic proportions. So what's the remedy? Lee Ezell prescribes a healthy done of perspective, forgiveness, and faith, washed down with an ounce or two of laughter. Writing from her own parenting experience, from years of counseling parents in their various dilemmas, and from her favorite biblical principles, she offers understanding and relief if you are wounded from trying to hug a "porcupine child" Worn out from trying to motivate a nonachiever? Agonizing over a prodigal who prefers living with the pigs? Sick with worry over your child's salvation? Weary trying to relate to a hostile stepchild? Black and blue from beating yourself up over your failures? or just plain burned out in your struggle to be a responsible mom or dad? Realistic yet hopeful, practical and biblical -- Pills for Parents in Pain is a lifesaving reminder that you're not alone in the parenting task. You share the job with a dependable and loving heavenly Parent who also happens to be the Great Physician. And he's the dependable remedy for all your parenting pain. "In an age of parent-bashing, child-hating, elder-discarding, and family-disparaging, it is a breath of fresh air to find Lee Ezell's realistic and biblical encouragement of both parents and children." From the introduction by Gloria Gaither "Ezell is perhaps best known for the moving story of her rape that resulted in pregnancy and her reunion years later with the child she had given up for adoption. Now she writes tenderly to parents who struggle with a difficult child. Christians, she observes, can be discouraged when their kids don't seem to be turning out "right." Christian pare! nts tend to be more concerned about passing on morality and values than their secular counterparts. Pain can be heaped on pain when well-meaning church friends like Job's advisors, hand out platitudes meant to straighten out the black sheep's errant ways. What are Ezell's pills? "Fatherly care" is God's steadfast commitment to our families in joy or trial, his love that covers our failures and our children's rebellion. "Blame removal therapy" describes when to let go of our kids and how to leave the ultimate responsibility with God. In her chapter "Taking Hold," Ezell reminds moms and dads of what they can work on--attitudes, habits, prayer and spiritual life, the marriage relationship and friendships outside the family." Ginny Nieuwsma. Lee Ezell is an author, and a "humor therapist" with a busy speaking and seminar schedule. She is the author of the best-selling The Cinderella Syndrome, Private Obsessions, and the nationally-acclaimed The Missing Piece, the story of her dramatic reunion with her "lost" daughter.

Even if you're a parent who prefers the straight and narrow of allopathic medicine, you'll find numerous tricks for soothing your little one in Gentle Healing for Baby and Child. From minor issues like splinters or a skinned knee to a nighttime cough that your prescribed medicine just isn't relieving, master herbalist Andrea Candee offers simple, safe remedies made from ingredients that you'll probably find in your kitchen.
Most chapters are focused on either a specific part of the body (skin, respiratory system, digestive system) or an age group (from infants to teenagers). You may be tempted to head directly to the chapters of most interest to you, but don't skip over "Dosing Guidelines." As with any medication, herbs must be taken properly in order to be safe, and following the simple charts of dosage frequency according to age and weight is an easy way to prevent problems. You'll also find suggestions here for getting some of those hot, pungent herbs down the hatch--it may take more than "a spoonful of sugar" to get your child to ingest doses of cayenne and garlic.
Some items show up repeatedly in Candee's book. Onions, garlic, honey, lemons, and salt are all commonly available and inexpensive, and can help with everything from sore throats (warm salt and lemon gargle) to an ear infection (onion poultice directly on the ear). Garlic, "nature's antibiotic," can take care of colds, parasites, and "anything about to become a something!" Honey works to soothe skin and the respiratory system. (Note that honey shouldn't be given orally to an infant; their immature immune systems might have difficulty fending off any botulism spores that might be present.)
Offering new and friendly ammunition for a parent's arsenal of healing techniques, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is an excellent addition to the family first aid kit and a fantastic way to avoid overreliance on prescription antibiotics. --Jill Lightner

The definitive guide for parents looking for an alternatives.......2002-10-27
Written by a Master Herbalist who has worked with physicians and in her own private practice for the past 25 years, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is the definitive guide for parents looking for an alternative to common treatments for everyday problems. In an accessible format, this guide includes solutions to ailments that occur both inside and outside the body. Got acne? Try an herbal detoxification, an herbal steam, or some Herbal Zinc Zapper. The Zapper recipe contains a mixture of zinc oxide, peppermint, and comfrey. Got a stressed out teen? Dose him with some Honegar - a mixture of honey and vinegar - to restore his chemical balance. In this book, the authors explain that the "floral nectars that comprise honey contain B vitamins and minerals which are calming to the nervous system." While you've got the honey jar out, don't forget to layer it over your little one's skinned knee before applying a bandage. Honey contains natural "anti-microbial properties."
Also included are sections that address subjects such as "Healing Imagery," as well as instructions for dosing herbs, where to find a local natural health practitioner, how to deal with toxicity, and even testing for food reactions. Herbalist Candee has created a helpful, easy to use guide to natural healing for parents. --Reviewed by Michelle Smith
A Wonderful Reference!.......2002-02-21
As a fairly young herbalist myself, i am very pleased with all the informative and varied rememdies suggested in this book. It is very easy to reference and very user friendly; nothing complicated. Andrea Candee offers a gentle manner in her representation of suggested rememdies. I have bought three extra copies to give as baby shower gifts! It's really nice to see such a variation of alternative rememdies/treatment talked about in this book, such as homeopathic, chiropractic, essential oils, onion poultices, and of course herbal preparations. It's nice to be able to make your own decision on a few different suggestions in many cases. It has been a great reference book for myself and other friends with babies as well. I highly recommend this book!!
Natural Healing is Naturally Great!.......2001-06-19
This book is wonderful! It provides useful alternatives to common everyday ailments that are gentle and effective, and it's easy and fun to read, too. Everything you need to know is clearly presented and referenced. The remedies are simple to prepare or obtain, and because they're made from nature's products, you don't have to worry about their effects being too strong for your child, or even yourself. Andrea Candee provides helpful information on how to decide upon which remedy is best as well as how to help "the medicine go down." This is a wonderful reference for every household. I love it!
Natural Remedies for Parents..or Anyone!.......2001-06-08
This book is a resource to revisit again and again. I received "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" as a gift, and was delighted to discover that it's chock-full of suggestions with applications for all family members. The authors have compiled a comprehensive, (but clear and succinct!) collection of natural remedies, illustrations and anecdotes. Introducing a wide range of herbal therapies for day-to-day problems as well as chronic conditions that sometimes can be addressed naturally, Candee does not eschew the value and necessity of skilled, conventional medical care when appropriate. She is a Master Herbalist, experienced and well-versed, and she speaks nationally on her subject, but she also appears to work comfortably within both conventional medical and holistic communities, embracing "the best of what works." Her own parenting experiences are shared in a friendly, comforting way and in clear, simple language. She covers a lot of territory, and often suggests more than one option. In my own work, facilitating mind/body stress-management, I meet concerned parents all around the country beginning to explore integrative therapies and become as informed as possible, to meet their children's health needs, and their own. So I was especially pleased to see that Candee pays considerable attention to the roles of stress-reduction, empowering children, emotional support and compassionate care, with what she refers to as "an educated heart." From acne and allergies...to pneumonia and vaccinations, "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" allows room for individual philosophies and personal preferences as Candee offers her own expertise with a light, gentle touch. There are many roads to Rome. "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child," is a thoughtful tool for parents, or anyone at all, to include in their decision-making for optimal health and wellness, extremely well-organized, and has an unusually detailed table of contents, as well as a comprehensive index for quick searching.

Book Description
Did you know that your actions during pregnancy impact your child's health after birth and into adulthood? That what you eat, how much you exercise, your stress level, and your immediate environment are all key factors in determining your baby's predisposition to such conditions as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke, cancer, even depression? Based on more than thirty years of rigorous scientific research, Dr. Nathanielsz's The Prenatal Prescription explains why this is so and what you can do about it.
Focusing on the main factors that directly affect the unborn child -- nutrition, stress, toxins, and exercise -- Dr. Nathanielsz lays out a clear and easy-to-follow program for "prenatal programming." He explains the science behind the fetal origins of adult disease, and offers tools that you can use to make your prenatal interaction with your baby memorable and beneficial.
Starting before conception, this simple prescription will change forever the way you think about preparing yourself for pregnancy. All parents want a long and healthy life for their child. The Prenatal Prescription explains how to make this a reality.

Excellent Book!.......2007-01-29
This is the single most informative and enlightening book I had read in a long time. After reading it, I asked my mom for details of how she cared for herself when she was pregnant with me, and it shined a light on so many things that I had dealt with since childhood. Now, I am myself 7 months pregnant and reading the book for a second time so that I may be mindful to do all that I can to grow a healthy baby. I recommend this book to all women who are pregnant or plan to conceive.
Waste of Time & Money.......2005-12-12
Not eveyone who is an M.D., Ph.D. can write or has something interesting or groundbreaking to say.
The cover of this book, with its ultrasound picture of a fetus, and the "AS SEEN ON THE TODAY SHOW", look interesting and makes the book look worth reading. But these are only a selling points.
This is a painfully repetative 212 page book that could have been written in no more than 20 pages. The author repeats himself page after page. He writes non-releavant stories about how researcher did some studies and came to some conclusions.
Everything in this book is common knowledge and common sense: eat healthy, don't over-eat or under-eat, don't drink, don't smoke, stay away from toxins and other chemical, take folic acid, and visit the OBGYN regularly.
Great information AND great writing.......2003-10-31
There aren't many books out there that address ways you can prepare BEFORE conception to promote the health of your child. The Prenatal Prescription carefully details the ways in which you can prepare your body, both before and after conception, to provide a healthy environment for your developing baby.
There are two things that set this book apart from other preganancy prep books. The first is that Peter Nathanielsz has carefully surveyed the research literature to answer some of the questions that every parent wants to know during pregancy (e.g. Can I exercise? Is caffiene okay?). He sifts through the evidence to evaluate the current thinking on prenatal development. It's very helpful to have access to this information in a pregnancy book. He also addresses topics that the reader may not even know are pertinent to pregancy; the chapter on stress and its effects on fetal development is fascinating, and the chapter on exercise is worth the cost of the book alone.
The second thing that sets this book apart is its tone. Nathanielsz writes with clarity and with great respect for the mother-to-be. He presents complex information in a way that is easy to process and absorb. This is a nice balance point between overly cutesy popular press and the too-technical-for-laypeople scientific literature. Finally, he manages to convey the need to provide a good prenatal environment without terrifying the reader, frequently putting the information back into the context of the 'big picture'.
This is an excellent book for anyone just thinking about when to plan a family; some of the recommended changes may take time to put into place.
A great read. Incredibly helpful for anyone who's expecting........2001-07-16
Easy to read. Very informative and well written. I enjoyed it immensely.
prioity for pregnancy.......2001-07-15
The Prenatal Prescription should be read by all pregnant women and by their families. It helps everyone to prepare and plot their way through the crucially important period of pregnancy. Professor Nathanielsz explains exactly what happens to the foetus, and more importantly, what is essential for the good health of the unborn child and its mother. The guidelines which he presents here are of inestimable importance. The book is immensely readable, presented for the general reader: the science does not obstruct our understanding of the extraordinary, exciting story of pregnancy.

Parents will learn how to assess their childrenâs selfâimage and how to help them know...
- They are loved and accepted by God and their family and friends.
- They can safely explore their world and learn new things.
- They are welcome in their family, church, and neighborhood.
- They can be ambitious and determined, and they can be leaders.
- They have positive physical, mental, and spiritual attributes.
Readers will find clear and practical suggestions as Dr. Hawkins describes childrenâs psychological needs, habits that can harm childrenâs selfâimage, and ways to help their children build a healthy selfâimage.
