Book Description
Their worst nightmare has returned . . .
Ever since Violet Baker's childhood companion was brutally murdered, she's been plagued with visions of the girl's last hours. Now, on the twentieth anniversary of Darlene's death, Violet's father is found dead, a note beside him confessing to the murder. But something doesn't feel right, and Violet returns to Crow's Landing looking for answers.
Facing the judgmental town as a murderer's daughter is difficult enough, but with the scalding tension between her and Sheriff Grady Monroe, Darlene's half brother, is worse. As the two of them race to unravel the mystery, it quickly becomes clear that Violet is in grave danger . . . and Grady suddenly knows that he'll do anything to protect her, no matter what the cost . . .
Customer Reviews:
In love!.......2007-01-25
When reading this book, and meeting the male character, I absolutely fell in love with Grady Monroe. He has gave me a great deal of respect now for any law enforcement. This book pulled you in from the beginning with the little girls and Violet screaming in her room for someone to help her best friend and Grady's half-sister, Darlene.
Grady Monroe is the one my heart went out to. He never knew his mother, had a father who stop speaking to him, growing up to always hear that Grady was the one to blame for Darlene's death. Fact was, Grady grew up to be a hard man to know. It was always about the law, doing what was right, and putting away the criminals. Except, living in a small town like Crow's Landing, he rarely had any crimes. He had a young woman in love with him at the local diner, but he wouldn't give her the time or day. Only a smile every now and then as she tried time and time again to get his attention. Then things begin to take a turn....
Violet Baker's father is found dead with a confession saying he killed Darlene. Grady is so confused on what to believe, but he calls Violet and tells her grandmother the news. Violet is then forced to go back to Crow's Landing, where she would be unwanted by the locals, to bury her father and hope to solve the murder and prove to everyone that he did not kill her friend.
Instantly, Grady and Violet resent each other. From their first meeting, to when Violet kicks Grady out of her father's house, to the next morning when he shows back up with a search warrant. They continue to resent one another until Violet cuts her way into the case of her father's mysterious death, and Grady is forced to allow her to help. Never realizing that he would lust after her, and she the same to him.
This story makes you want to bite your fingernails until no more. Grady and Violet have such mesmorizing chemistry, you never want their story to end.
This is by far my favorite Rita Herron book! And just because of Grady Monroe. Too bad he isn't a real person.....
Nearly as good as when Nora Roberts told this story in "Carolina Moon.".......2006-10-18
I enjoyed this book too much to deduct points for what might not have been a deliberate rip-off of Roberts' earlier treatment of the same plot. The same, or just similar? You be the judge.
'Carolina Moon' and 'A Breath Away' are the story/stories of a woman with unwanted psychic abilities, who has been haunted since childhood by her failure to prevent the brutal murder of her best friend. The heroine(s) grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in a small Southern town. She was an only child, isolated by poverty. Her friend was the beloved daughter of the town's most influential family. In both books, the heroine's father considered her psychic abilities a curse; the best friend had a snob for a mother, and an older brother who was destined to become the town hunk. Both versions of the hero-hunk remember the heroine as timid, plain, an object of pity and an unwelcome reminder of his sister's death. Both of him will have mixed feelings when the heroine returns to town - sophisticated, successful, distrustful of men, and still insisting she's psychic.
Both heroines experience visions of current-day serial murders that seem connected with the past, and are forced to accept the hero's help in the face of skeptical townspeople and vindictive mothers.
Surprisingly, the plotlines resolve in very different ways.
Despite the similarities - or because of them, if you find yourself as fascinated as I was by the possibility that two authors came up with this premise independently - 'A Breath Away' is an entertaining read, vastly more compelling and romantic than my one previous experience with this author ('In A Heartbeat'). There's enough originality in the motive for the murders and the way the mystery develops to keep things interesting, even if you've read the same set-up by Nora Roberts.
Has a few leaks that need repair.......2006-04-08
I understand it is difficult to integrate romance and suspense in one story. This book is an example of this difficulty. Ms. Herron did a fine job in the suspense department but the romance did not blend into the story. It is predictable and boring. What bothered me was in the beginning when Grady and Violet meet for the first time in twenty years.... The door creaked open. Faint moonlight spilled in the front porch, silhouetting a human form......... The author goes on to describe Violet through Grady's eyes from head to toe nail (In the dark)..... Toe nails with pink polish that made his body stir. (What kind of night vision goggles is he wearing? Did I miss something?)
A natural rose color stained full lips devoid of lipstick. She didnt need it. She had kissable lips. (How does he see this in faint moonlight?) I knew the story was going to have problems from that point on. I continued to read it however, because of the mystery. I agree with other reviews, there are too many characters that were thrown into the story for the sake of suspense and they just sort of unravelled at the end. Descriptions were repeatd which is annoying. I have quit reading books that start to fizzle in the beginning. Life is too short. However, I DID finish this book and despite the flaws, and felt satisfied. The actual plot was strong and creative. I will try another one of Herron's books.
Too many stories, not enough endings.......2006-03-28
This is my first Rita Herron book so if she has storylines in other books for some of the characters in this one, I haven't discovered them yet. First of all the story is fair with lots of mystery but she has so many major characters with mysterious lives that could make them the killer but then again they aren't but she doesn't unravel any of the mysteries. The mystery of Logan and his mysterious hands, lives with his dark glasses on always, sleeps in a cave, "something" makes Violet afraid of him. The mystery of Nick Norton the FBI man with lots of secrets, wants to jump his profiler Adams bones but she is married but unhappy? Then there is Joseph, Grady's half brother that disappears for "mystic reasons" having to do with his Indian ancestory, he also gets pounded on in his mother's resturant where he works for no reason but the men are bullies but they aren't arrested, just told to leave. He is handsome but no woman wants him. Poor DeWayne and his nutty mother are mysterious with lots to hide but Herron doesn't say what they are hiding other than intelligence and his dad. Half of the town knows about the secret that is causing women to be killed but too stupid to tell why. Makes no sense when many of the deaths are their own family? Finally Grady is going to just walk away from being sheriff and move to Tynbee Island and be with Violet and do what? Too many questions for me without any kind of resolution. I hate books like that. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY. Book was a let down.
less impressed than most.......2005-07-16
I guess I was less impressed than most with this book. I was really looking forward to it, and, yes, there were lots of suspects. But so much of the promise of the first 2/3 of the book became pure contrivance by the end that I was going "Oh, give me a break!" The beginning and even the clairvoiance were good and believable, but then we had to keep throwing so many troubled/psychotic/criminal people into the mix and having them ALL contribute to the plot. I am sorry, but the true criminal was not unexpected (I picked him out by the second time he was mentioned, even tho' we had NO background story on him, and almost too much on the others). I think she tried to make too many possibilities and instead made a muddy story.
Also, as a medical person, pavulon is a muscle paralytic but that means paralyzing all muscles, resulting in the person not only NOT being able to blink but also NOT BEING ABLE TO BREATHE! If they aren't on a ventilator--guess what? They DIE within minutes. Just really was the final mess in a rather messy story.
I would have liked it better, too, if she hadn't done the Disney "clean up all the stories and make everyone happy ever after" at the end.

Today's children are surrounded by stress. They experience stress in every situation from what they see, hear, and do. This is a major factor in causing both psychological and physical problems and yet we do very little to teach children the very important lessons on how to deal with this stress. This very uniques book combines activities, advice, and checklists to help with this never-ending job. Includes clay and two cookie cutters for the activities.

Customer Reviews:
A Breath Away .......2007-09-06
Jade Broussard used to work for the National Security Agency, but now she has her own security and investigation team. Remington Tremaine hired Jade after someone tried to kill him. Although Remi works for the NSA now, he has a shady past and possibly present, so Jade doesn't trust him. She is strongly attracted to him though. Remi is determined to get Jade into his bed.
As they try to figure out who is trying to kill him, their attraction turns physical, though when the job is over, Jade is still planning to walk away.
In A Breath Away, Remi and Jade are intense, sexy and tough. They are great together, in and out of bed. Remi's past, Jade's lifestyle and a growing mystery make A Breath Away an appealing story.

powerful romantic suspense thriller .......2007-03-08
Lucas Broussard (male lead of JUST ONE TASTE) asks his cousin former NSA agent turned personal security specialist Jade Broussard to protect art expert Remington Tremaine. Jade would do anything for her only known living relative so she agrees though she also knows that the client was an international art thief with many enemies.
When Jade and Remington meet, sparks fly as they are attracted to one another and he has doubts about a female bodyguard though he wants her to guard his body in his bed. As they become acquainted, attempts are made on his life; she shows her competency and her courage as she risks her life to keep him safe. They fall in love, but first a dangerous adversary must be stopped before Remington and perhaps Jade become victims.
This is a powerful romantic suspense thriller with plenty of action in and out of the bedroom as the hero's past catches up top his present. The story line is a fast-paced one sitting delight as the action grips the audience from the onset and never lets up until the final coda occurs. The support cast is fully developed, but the tale belongs to the gender bending couple as Wendy Etherington takes the breath away from her thrilled audience.

If only I could give this a negative star!.......2007-04-06
I bought this book b/c it looked promising, and didn't bother to read any reviews on it.
The story, while a little far fetched, could plausibly happen... But after 3 promising chapters, I lost hope. This book kept going on and on about the heroine being a "know-it-all" in regards to survival which grated my nerves. Yes, we get the point that she scares of men with her natural attitude. And the hero, OMG! could he be any more of an idiot? The coconut scene sealed the deal for me. Meanwhile his co-producer, Gwen, does a complete 180 on the heroine-she's acting like a gal pal on the phone and suddenly she's on the island acting like a b***h. This book is definitely headed to the used book store. Don't waste your money or your time!
Chick Lit at its worst.......2006-06-16
No stars actually! What a waste of money. I read the first few chapters and was not happy. But, I thought, give it a chance. Well, I did. I cannot recommend this book for anything but the trash. By the way, there is "chick lit" and then there is porn. This is the latter.
Returned book to store.......2005-12-13
This book looked really interesting when i picked it up. Also i like discovering new authors. The premise of the book sounded like something Rachael Gibson or Lori Foster would do and i totally love their writing but this was such a let down. I got to like chapter 3 and closed it, found my receipt and took a trip back to the bookstore to return it. I could not stand either character and how they were portrayed. I'm all for the strong independent woman but she was a bit overdone in my opinion and she made him look totally incompetent in his writing and he didn't seem to stick up much for his ability at all. It just wasn't a very good book in my opinion and I don't hold out much hope for the next title available by this author.
Totally Disappointed........2005-07-20
When I looked at this book, I could looked like a fun read. After slogging through the book, I can tell you that I'm hugely disappointed. The hero, Cole Ryder in this story sounds like a pretty great guy although why he puts up with the heroine's neurosis is beyond me. I mean, come-on, lust/attraction will only carry you so Far. I don't know too many guys that would jump through the hoops that Ariel puts Cole through. Even more, why would you require someone to jump through those hoops? Protecting your heart is one thing, being obsessively neurotic about it something else. I lost total patience with Ariel and began to wonder about what kind of a guy Cole was after he put up with all that nonsense. I know that I will not be spending my hard earned money on any Tina Donahue books from now on. It was just a total disappointment.
Steamy Jungle Romance!.......2005-07-05
Okay, first off one must put aside reality for this read to work for them. They call it fiction for a reason. If you can do that than you are in for a fun romantic romp in an unlikely location.
Cole Ryder is a former U.S. Marine turned screenplay writer who has written an action adventure screenplay set in the wilds of a rain forest. In order to make this seem more legit for film goers he hire's a survival specialist to help make his movie more realistic. (Remember...fiction) Well, his problem is not going to be learning about the tropics but instead keeping a lid on his emerging feelings for the sexy but shy Ariel Leigh.
Ariel has a bruised heart and a problem with self confidence. Not your normal problem for a person that can take on a rain forest and come out smelling like a daisy...okay some tropical flower just the same. But Cole speaks to her heart. He is everything that she wants, but everything she can't have. Or at least she thinks so. But will several days in the rainforest change things for the better for Ariel or will she let her hero walk away from her?
If you can get past the concept that a former U.S. Marine Force Recon officer will need help to survive in a rainforest, let alone need help to "spif" up his screenplay you will probably enjoy Ms. Donahue's latest effort. Aside from the unrealistic situation this was a fast read with great interaction between Ariel and Cole. Their dynamic is different but fun. This is a sweet but steamy romance between these two people. There are really no factor's provided as conflict except the issues that Ariel has. I would have like to seen this expanded just a bit to give it more punch but overall it plays okay. This is a good book to take on the road or to the beach. Although not above average this is still a fun read with some laugh out loud moments. Not brain surgery but entertaining if taken at face value.

It gives the reader a restoration or inception of faith!.......1999-09-17
Just A Breath Away: Tell Me How To Die, I've Never Done This Before by Reverend Edward Tabbitas is more than its title claims. Although it does help one deal with the emotional upheaval of death, it also serves as a handbook for coping with the many emotions, pains, joys and sorrows experienced from infancy to adulthood in everyday life. Since the book shares real heart rendering situations, each person reading it will find an issue to relate to and learn from. I have read the book through twice, a few months apart and each time it was in one sitting due to its mesmerizing content. The second time, I developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of its intended message. If you've lost your way and your faith, it will be restored. If you've never believed, you will after the first few pages.
I could not put the book down........1999-08-07
The book has given me a better understanding of what has happened to the love ones that I thought I lost. After reading Rev. Edward Tabbitas book I now realize that they are still with me. Many of his stories have touched me in a very special way. It made me cry, at times it made me sad, happy and made me at times laugh. It left me with a warmth in my heart that I have never felt before. This is definitely a book that is a must read. I have given this book to friends as a gift, and all of my friends that received this wonderful book have passed on to me their feelings of the beauty of this book. I must thank the author for this most moving book.
Rev. E. Tabbitas teaches us that dying is only a begining........1998-06-20
I was taught by my mother who is now 82yrs young, never to be afraid of the dead its the living that only hurts us. Reading this book confirms that. I have recommended this book to all my family and friends. They call me and tell me what an easying reading book it is. That you just can't put it down. Most of them finished the book in two days. Rev. Ed is like a brother to me and I have with my own eyes witnessed many of the stories that he has shared with all of us is this wonderful book. He is a man of many wonderful insights I have recommend him to all that have lost love ones. I feel that this book will give much insight to those who have lost love ones. It will show them that they are never futher then as Ed puts it Just a Breath Away. As you read all of the true stories he has shared you will as I did cry, laugh and say whow I can relate to that. Believe me one thing you will not do is regret that you purchased the book.

A good suspensful book with well researhed Hawaiin history.......1999-02-15
The ancient Hawaiian culture has always held an air of mystique. The language, not readily understandable by the rest of the world, even has a touch of the unknown. Couple these with a warm tropical paradise and you have the perfect setting for suspense. When Kate McKenna, the daughter of a native Hawaiian mother, visits the island of Maui in search of her heritage, a chance meeting with a mysterious stranger piques her curiosity. The stranger, Dan Kala, is disconcerted with the near-identical resemblance of Kate to a long-dead Princess of Hawaiian Royalty.Beginning with a missing roll of film, unexplainable events begin to occur which seem to have roots in a curse out of the past. When Kate begins to doubt her own sanity she wonders if Dan holds the answers, or is he on a search for his own reasons? TAKE MY BREATH AWAY is a good, suspenseful read that kept me turning the pages.
What a fun read!.......1999-02-09
Take My Breath Away is the fifth Meg O'Brien book I've read and the author continues to amaze me. Her writing is both intelligently crafted and full of suspense. I loved the way she weaved historical fact throughout a modern plot. The heroine is brave, but in a vulnerable sort of way, making me want to cheer her on every step of the way.
Excellent book. One of many of Meg's treasures!.......1999-02-07
This book is interesting and spellbinding. Meg's other books that I love are her Jesse James series and my favorite thriller is "The Keeper". If you like suspence and mystery, you have to read these books. When you read, you are there, you can understand the characters and are rapt to see what happens to them throughout the story. Jesse James of the series is a unique character and as the books evolve so does she. She ages and grows. The only thing wanting about these books is that it takes too long before a new one comes out!
Do yourselves a favor and get into a Meg O'Brien book, you'll be glad you did.
Terri Doria
Can't afford to go to Hawaii...Read this one!.......1998-02-20
I enjoyed Meg O'Brien's novel, "Take my Breath Away." It was spooky, scarry and suspensful. The visions of the princess in Kate's room where mystifying to me. It had me pause and take a glimpse around my own room to make sure noone was there. Great to read on a rainy day when you feel that you wish you were in Hawaii.
Only for fans of Hawaian ghost stories........1997-04-16
Unless you are already interested in Hawaian history and mythology, this book is likely to be somewhat disappointing. The relationships did not really make sense, and the hero is boring, with incomprehensible motivation. As for the supernatural part, it did not really integrate with the rest of the plot in my view
