Product Description
In Hilary Flowers second book, ADVENTURES IN GENTLE DISCIPLINE, she allows the reader to explore goals of gentle discipline, rewards for both child and parent, and what it looks like in action. Hilary debunks myths about the effectiveness of gentle discipline methods while empowering parents to find ways to make gentle discipline work for both themselves and their children. With creativity, courage, and commitment, each parent and child can develop their own unique way of engaging in gentle discipline. Gentle discipline is not a far off standard for us to meet but an imperfect, lively and richly meaningful way of communicating with our children. Although experts can offer theories, this book proves that parents themselves have a great deal to offer other parents in regard to this incredibly worthwhileand revolutionary!way of guiding young children. Line drawings capture small scenes from the journey of parenting and personal stories from a variety of mothers show creative adaptations of gentle discipline methods in different families.

great for new parents.......2007-08-04
Hilary Flower collected suggestions and strategies from lots of different parents and presents them here. She focuses on toddlers as she says that is what new parents need. As the first-time mother of a soon-to-be two-year-old, I agree! I have several books with sound philosophy but I think this is the book that has the best concrete strategies for dealing constructively with your little ones.
Invaluable resource.......2007-08-01
I find myself applying this book to parenting situations on a daily basis. This book is a must read for parents who approach discipline with a desire to nuture rather than punish. Ms. Flowers has written a timeless resource for parents everywhere.
An invaluable book and a "must-read" for new parents.......2006-03-07
In Adventures In Gentle Discipline: A Parent-To-Parent Guide, author Hilary Flower allows the reader to explore the goals of a gentle discipline, rewarding both the child and the parent. In explanation of her own theory of discipline, Hilary clarifies the reader regarding how other disciplines may not be as effective, if not abusive as well. Adventures In Gentle Discipline is an invaluable book and a "must-read" for new parents.
A discipline guide that every parent should read.......2005-12-31
Hilary Flower has written a wonderfully down-to-earth and real guide to gentle discipline -- a book that every parent will be able to relate to and that every parent would benefit from reading.
Unlike some other books in this genre that leave you feeling like you could never measure up to the author's standards of parenting perfection -- and that can therefore end up taking a toll on your parenting self-esteem -- "Adventures in Gentle Discipline" is empowering and, above all, inspiring.
By reading about how real parents have found practical ways to apply the basic principles of gentle discipline to everyday situations that you, the reader, can relate to, and by including chapters about parenting mistakes and how you can get yourself back on track discipline-wise when those parenting faux pas inevitably occur, Hilary Flower gives her readers the wonderfully liberating message that you don't have to be perfect to be a parent (thankfully) and that it's normal for parents to learn alongside their kids.
Learning from the experiences of other parents can be invaluable, both in terms of helping us to come up with new ways of dealing with particular parenting challenges and in helping us to develop a unique parenting style that works for ourselves and our children. This book takes that approach by bringing together the experiences of the true experts on gentle discipline: parents who have used this discipline method.
I highly recommend this book to other parents.
An Empathetic Parenting Book.......2005-11-10
From my review at Hylands Homeopathy, Rx:Chat Motherhood (www.hylands.com/forums/): Sometimes it's easier to focus on the parts of parenting that don't work, the times that are hard and frustrating. In contrast, I've been enjoying reading Hilary Flower's book "Adventures in Gentle Discipline." It's subtitled "A Parent-to-Parent Guide," and one thing I love is that it's filled with stories and statements by real and actual moms. Sure, some of them come off as too saintly for me, the type of mom who never raises her voice, who unlike me never gets frustrated or impatient. But that's a small percentage, and balanced by personal essays near the end that are exruciatingly honest, whether about being raised with very strict discipline and threats of violence, or another by a mom who confesses hitting her child, even though she doesn't believe that anyone should ever hit their child.
I've liked opening the book to random pages and reading sentences like "There will always be someone to tell you that you are being too strict, and someone else to say that you are being too lenient." Don't we all need to hear reassurances like this along the way? The book is so down to earth, so understanding that as parents doing our best we try hard, but, as Flower writes, "No matter how proactive you are, you can count on parenting, childhood, and life in general to be messy anway."
Since I tend to be the kind of parent who gets frustrated and says things like "If you do that one more time you will never ever eat dinner at my table again," it's helpful to be reminded that fanciful ultimata like this just don't work (though they may feel good for the moment before my daughter keeps on rocking the chair on two legs, or smashing ranch dressing into the placemat, or whining, or whatever else she's been doing to drive me crazy). Flower reminds us to empathize, be gentle, and to extend the benefit of the doubt, but within a framework that still wants kids to behave and to listen to us. The many stories give us lots of possibilities to try.And what is gentle discipline? "Gentle Discipline means, quite simply, placing empathy and respect at the very center of your parenting." It may not be that different from what many of us do. However, I appreciate the chance to be reminded of my ideals, and to be supported as a parent by an author and book that itself is kind and unscolding, that is, a book that places empathy and respect at its center.

Highly Recommended .......2007-02-01
I highly recommend this book for clarity, good sensical advice, and widespread usefulness to counteract prevailing inadequate, ineffective and harmful disciplinary practices. It is simple, clear, highly readable, directly applicable and of practical usefullness to 90% of parents who are having difficulty with their preschool and elementary school age children.
Great book on discipling your child.......2007-01-12
This is a great book! It really gives you some get ideas for discipling your child without spanking.
New 3rd Edition of SOS Help For Parents.......2006-03-01
I have a new 3rd edition of SOS which has a new ISBN of 0935111212. You can only find it at Amazon if you put in the new number. It is so easy to read and understand and you will see amazing changes in your child's behavior right away. The new SOS makes a great gift for parents with young children.
Reactions of a teacher, mother of two sons, and wife of the author .......2006-02-27
This 3rd edition is now available on Amazon with an ISBN number of 0935111212. The part of SOS that I like best is the `Index of Solutions to 46 Behavior Problems.' Parents are busy people and it's easy to find a section dealing with a particular behavior problem such as tantrums without reading the whole book. I have used most of the SOS solutions in my elementary classroom, with my two sons, and with preschoolers when I taught preschool. These methods work!
Some of my favorite parts are: Index of Solutions to 46 Behavior Problems, handling tantrums and aggressive behavior, time-out for toys that misbehave, and avoiding 9 common errors when using time-out.
Some of my 5th graders actually took the book home to persuade their parents to use its methods with younger siblings. My 5th graders especially liked seeing their parents successfully use SOS methods with their younger brothers and sisters and telling me about it.
I am proud that SOS is in eight languages. At conferences, I have talked with foreign mental health professionals who have told me there is such a need for this parenting book and how grateful they are to find it in their language.
Excellent.......2005-06-24
I am a bit partial, as I had DR.Clark for classes, but this book is wonderful. Not having children at the time I first read it, I thought it was a little much. Now I have two of my own and I refer back to it often!

Looking for folktales from China for elementary children? An informational children's book for a middle school science class? A list of books on the topic of compassion? A sampling of ABC books? These lists and more can be found in Nancy Keane's treasury of "great reading lists" for children. This versatile guide provides reproducible book lists based on the most common needs of educators and librarians who work with young readers. There are lists for standard curriculum areas (e.g., math, social studies, science), other areas of study such as character education and values, genres (e.g., pop-up, memoirs, ABC books), themes (e.g., animals, food, sports), and read-alikes (on bookmarks). You'll find 100 reproducible lists of fiction and nonfiction books for ages 5-14 (elementary/middle) that you can use to create hand-outs for teachers and parents (as well as for older readers), put in your newsletter, or post on your Web site or bulletin board. Focus is on new titles and classics that are still in print and readily available for purchase. On each list, titles are grouped according to grade level. Room to customize with your library logo or clipart is provided on each reproducible sheet. Bibliographic information and a brief description are given for each title. A dozen bookmarks are also included. This is a great time-saving tool and a good source for finding extended reading lists and read-alikes! Grades K-8.

Recommended Books for the Little Ones.......2006-06-14
You can pretty much tell what this book is about from its title. It is a book, broken down into three major parts that gives lists of recommended books for children. The three parts are: School Subjects, Character and Values, Genres and Themes. Each of thes parts is further broken down into the specific lists themselves. For instance under Genres and Themes, there are Genres and Themes. Under themes there are Angels, Cowboys, Holidays. Some of these, such as Holidays are further broken down into Chinese New Year, Easter, Christmas, etc. All in all there are 100 lists.
While not copyright free, permission is given to libraries to copy the lists, put them into a newsletter or other such uses. The lists themself are organized on pages by themselves so that a library logo, clipart, etc. can be put on top of the pages before they are reproduced. There are also a dozen bookmarks that can be reprinted for library use.
Therre is a wealth of information here that can be of great help in the right situation.

Great for parents with toddlers!.......2005-08-11
I read this book that was loaned out to me by my son's daycare provider. (She also gave input on the proof-reading, she is a friend of Joni's....I think that's what she said and I did see her name in the book!)
I thought this book was a great book for any parent or person that will ever be caring for a toddler/child. My son is 22 months old and a lot of the things I read about in this book, he's been doing right at the age Joni writes about. I hope that I will be able to use some of what she says to help with any tantrums that my husband & I might have to deal with now that we have our 22 month old son and 3 week old twins!
Review - Everything Guide to Tantrums.......2005-08-04

Everything Parent's Guide To Tantrums.......2005-07-20

The book is easy to read and provides developmenatally appropriate information on a variety of topics that parents as well as teachers see and deal with on a daily basis.

Signs for me.......2007-09-24
I bought this bool to increase my ASL vocabulary to use with my hard of hearing children and it has disapeared! One of my children liked it so much he took it to school to use to teach his main stream teacher.
Excellent Buy!.......2007-03-08
Other books I have tried were very difficult to understand. But this book made it easy for me to learn simple signs and relay them to my preschoolers.
Book: Signs for Me............2006-11-11
The books arrived in great condition. The seller was very prompt in getting the books out to me. Thank you!
Check this out!.......2006-08-28
I have a daycare with children who use & do not use sign language. Personally i have used signs for a long time. This book is not only a teaching tool, but fun for the kids to use. I have created a memory game with some of the basic signs that children use everyday. With the other teaching books i have & use this is the one the children flock to to learn new signs. I only wish i had bought it a long time ago. After i bought it i had an instant request from a parent to buy one!
great.......2005-08-28
This book is great for children. The pictures of the signs are very easy to understand and the pictures illustrating the words are wonderful. My four-year old doesn't need to be able to read the vocabulary word to understand the book herself. She loves this book. I'm a sign language interpreter, the book shows ASL signs, but no grammer rules. It's basically a sign dictionary. I agree it's missing a few key signs, but overall I really like this book. I just recently used this book to teach a Parent/Toddler sign class. Everyone in the class liked this book.

Book Description
This book answers some of the basic questions we have as parents for our children. How can we help our children to develop the skills and character they need? What should our role be? How can we know when to act and how to act when we see that character is at issue? Of course, there are no hard and fast answers to these questions. This book will share with you that in our daily interactions with our children, we influence them and affect the development of their character, sometime positively, sometimes negatively.
Customer Reviews:
This is wonderful!.......2003-02-21
This book is a practical and empowering approach to raising children to be their personal best. I want my children to be happy and find personal fulfillment, to have strength of character and moral integrity, and to be kind and considerate of others. Madelyn's book addresses these issues from all angles. She discusses accountability, overindulgence, values and courage. It has helped me tremendously in defining what is truly important, and in understanding how to guide my children toward a productive and fulfilling life.

Mary Leonhardt, longtime English teacher, reading specialist, and author of the terrific Parents Who Love Reading, Kids Who Don't has put her almost 30 years of teaching experience toward providing 99 specific tips to turn your child into an avid reader. From number 1 ("Resolve that a love of reading will be your most important educational goal for your children") to number 99 ("Keep a perspective. Top reading skills should be your most important educational goal for your children but not your most important life goal for your child"), Leonhardt's suggestions are wide-ranging, specific, and highly effective. Leonhardt is an advocate of providing kids with reading material they like (go for the comic books and leave the classics for later). Whether your children are early readers or teenagers, 99 Ways to Get Kids to Love Reading will help you inspire and support your child's lifelong reading habit. --Ericka Lutz

80 Should be listed under "DUH!" and 19 are good.......2005-12-09
I didn't actually count, but most of the ways listed were just common sense. There were some ideas that I hadn't thought about, I must admit, but the majority of the book was just stuff anyone with half a brain should know.
Truly a public service! For more detail read Parents.......1999-02-06
I'm a tiny disappointed, tho. It's mostly the same info as Parents Who Love Reading (great!) in a faster format. I bought 99 to get an update. For example, where can you still get comic books? I can't find any. What has replaced them? I loved Richie Rich, et.al., too but the format has disappeared except as collectables. Help! My kid needs something comparable for EASY, FUN, AVID, ADDICTIVE recreational reading!
Book Description
This clear, well-written, practical guide describes bullying and its impact. Most importantly, it offers a sensible how-to approach for improving children's self image so that they are more well-behaved when they go to schools, playgrounds, and day care. In addition, parents learn how to examine themselves in order to better model healthy, assertive, nonaggressive behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Bullying.......2001-03-18
There can not be enough said about bullying, it can devistate lives, and change a person for a lifetime. This book is a wonderful guide to be used in schools and places of enployment to control some of the spiteful actions of both children and adults. This book is a guide to better understanding of how to cope with anger, pain, and social attitudes. Then it helps in the healing. I believe this book will help many children as well as adults deal with the insight of how Bullying changes lives.
Book Description
Written specifically for teenage parents, who must blend their own needs as adolescents with the tremendous needs of their children, this book advocates gentle teaching rather than the harsh punishment too often utilized by parents. Teen parents and former teen parents share their viewpoints on such issues as spanking, disciplining a child while living with one's own parents, toilet training, and other topics of concern during a child's first three years.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for pregnant & parenting teenagers.......2006-02-24
I am very impressed by this book. It is well written and in language a teenager can understand. I used this book while preparing to teach a class to pregnant and parenting teens and found that even adults have something to learn by reading this book (although it is certainly not written for an adult reader.) The information is concise and correct. It focuses on positive parenting to improve the parent's self-esteem while teaching the parent to develop the self-esteem of their child. Not only does the book pose the difficulties of being a parent, it also points out support systems and strategies for inproving a child's behavior. Most importantly, the book looks at parenting from an adolecent's point-of-view. The authors did an excellent job of addressing real parenting dilemmas, but they were able to tailor the material to an adolescent's perspective. I also appreciated that the authors included comments from teen parent's in the teen's words. I think all parenting classes should have one book for each student to read.
Review from a teen mom.......2001-02-28
I thought that this book was very good. I loved the quotes from actual teen parents- I could really relate. The suggestions were very good. The only thing I didnt really like was that there wasn't enough focus on teen parents that were possitive.
