classic in adolescent studies.......2004-11-23
In All Grown Up and No Place to Go, David Elkind methodically maps out teenagehood for his readers in three parts. In the first section he details bodily and emotional changes that take place within the young person, illustrating his observations with popular young adult literature, interviews and personal experiences. In the second section he turns to the growing obstacles that face youth in these changing times. Finally, in the third and final section Elkind cleverly identifies the physical, social, emotional and familial results stress causes in the lives of young people growing up in America. Through categorizing and characterizing the differing types of stress the young person faces, Elkind addresses the differing reactions that result from differing typologies of personalities of young people and finally ends with a chapter suggesting possible suggestions to deal with the different kinds of stresses.
Through reading Elkind's summarization of the teen years the reader recalls the awkward years that he/she survived on the way to adulthood. From the physical to the emotional to the spiritual issues that mushroom in the lives of the adolescent, the reader is reminded and therefore able to empathize with the struggles teens face from within themselves as well as from outside influences. With this deeper level of understanding of the teenage world, Elkind's concept of the patchwork self does much to enlighten the readers as to behaviors they may identify in their own past as well as in the youth that populate the halls of high schools, youth centers and churches alike.

Elkind, David. (1984) . All Grown Up & No Place to Go. Reading, Massachusetts: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company.
Reviewed by: K.N.B. of SJC
Elkind's book discusses many of the issues that face adolescents each day. Even though the book was written in 1984, the topics Elkind discusses are still a concern for many children, parents and teachers. Now, fifteen years later, there are even more things that we all need to worry about. Some of the issues that Elkind covers are: substance abuse, sexual activity, suicide, crime, value systems, puberty, family structure, media, pregnancy, school systems, stress and peer pressure. He gives many examples for each concern. Some are fictional. Others are actual life experiences that have come out during interviews. Elkind writes about both Erik Erikson and Jean Piaget when he discusses what needs to be accomplished mentally in the teenage years. He briefly mentions different phases of life in terms that are easily understood. In fact, the entire book is easy to comprehend. Elkind really keeps the interest of the reader. His use of personal life experiences is truly captivating. Unfortunately, some of the stories are sad to read about. Growing up in the 80's myself, I was never aware of how common some of these issues were. This book makes me realize that the incidences that occur today occurred back then as well.
Very Informative.......1998-04-21
I was looking for a book to learn how to deal with the teenage crises facing our nation. This book showed a lot of negative views. It was very informative but usually showed only one point of view.

Head Games - Football's Concussion Crisis.......2007-10-06
I had 11 concussions playing football in the 1960's. My last two happened when I was playing for the NY Jets Taxi Squad. They ended my career. "Head Games - Football's Concussion Crisis" has given information
and understanding that I had not known in 40 years. I think every parent should have knowledge about head injuries no matter what sport their children play. "Head Games - Football's Concussion Crisis" is a great way to start.
Fantastic book!.......2007-08-01
This is a fantastic book and a must read for parents, athletic trainers, coaches, and anyone else interested in seeing a summary of the current research on concussions. Nowinski breaks down the complex science into layman's terms and uses LOTS of stories and personal accounts to really drive home the importance of his message without ever taking an alarmist tone. As an athletic trainer, I would highly recommend this book to anyone remotely involved in sports, especially collision sports like football and wrestling.
Eye opening.......2007-02-20
This should be required reading for every clinician that sees patients who have had concussions.
An excellent read.......2007-02-11
As a physician and athlete, I was surprised at how much I didn't know about head injuries! Not only is this book an excellent layman's guide, it is a well-researched and even-handed review of the emerging data on post-concussion disability. Nowinksi has a personal writing style and uses his own experience for credibility and context. He is to be commended!
Great Book ! A must for every parent's bookshelf........2007-02-05
As an emergency medicine physician I found this to be a very entertaining and informative book that should be a mandatory read for all parents, coaches and health care professionals that are assosciated with contact sports .The author related up to date medical thinking in a easy to understand way that will have the majority of physicians thinking "Wow , I didn't know that ! "
I would suggest all parents "force " there sons to read this before playing to really emphasize the difference between "hurt and injured."

Book Description
The inadequacy of the foster care system has long been recognized. One of the biggest obstacles to reforming the system is the relative unavailability of research data from the field, information that would shed light on key empirical trends and pressing issues.
This long overdue volume provides a much-needed overview of the current state of foster care. Leading researchers and practitioners summarize and discuss the results of their current research, providing through their data an unparalleled, detailed glimpse of the inner workings of the foster care system in its entirety. The volume is also valuable for its survey and syntheses of important issues and trends affecting foster care. Subjects discussed include welfare reform, reporting systems, family reunification, mental health services, and the needs of minority children. Wide-ranging and detailed in its coverage, this collection is destined to become an essential reference and guide to the foster care system.

If you've got a teenager at home who is manipulating the family and refusing to live by your rules, consider the practical guidance of Teens in Turmoil. Aimed specifically at families experiencing severe distress, Teens provides insight and instruction through real-life examples. Most of the stories are full of anger and miscommunication--problems many parents are all too familiar with. Using tools like "instant replay" of unsuccessful conversations to elicit more positive exchanges, you'll learn how to achieve better results from incidents like poor grades, missing a curfew, or lying. Diagnosis for teen problems can be a little tricky--is what you're experiencing "normal," or have things gotten out of control? To this end, the guide offers helpful questions to ask yourself as well as warning signs: Is your teen being physically threatening or sexually promiscuous? Any abrupt changes in personal style or behavior? Certainly, teens test limits, experiment with style, and cop attitudes; that is as it should be during these years of mental and physical upheaval. But parents have every right to have standards and expectations that their children can be required to meet--even when the child in question is "nearly an adult." --Jill Lightner
Book Description
An important, honest, and life-changing book for parents of troubled teens--coauthored by an expert psychotherapist and a "parent-who's-been-there"
More than ever before, it seems, we're discussing teenagers and their problems. But for all the talk, there have been few books offering any answers ... until now. In Teens in Turmoil, Dr. Carol Maxym and Leslie York offer parents a process through which they can become catalysts of change for their troubled adolescent. In a very accessible style that includes quizzes and charts, and illuminating family stories and examples, the authors guide parents toward making an honest assessment of their teen, themselves, and their family. Parents are then shown how to apply their increased knowledge and insight to everyday life where they can begin to implement positive change. The final section offers an extensive guide to making decisions about therapy, professional programs, and local or residential placement, along with resources and recommended reading.
Teens in Turmoil is a timely book that will speak to everyone who has worried in silence over the fate of their adolescent, and will help parents restore their adolescent's future while reclaiming their own lives.
Customer Reviews:
Teens in Turmoil.......2004-04-13
Having firsthand experience with a Teen in Turmoil, I can truthfully say that our entire family was floundering. What to do? What to say? I had read many books on the subject of parenting a troubled teen and found conflicting advice. THIS BOOK IS THE ANSWER! Instead of treating the symptoms, this book addresses the problem! We are currently incorporating Dr. Maxym's advice to our problems and we are seeing results! You will, too. I highly recommend this book to ALL parents, whether you have a teen in turmoil or not. It might even prevent you from going through the turmoil and it doesn't get any better than that!
Teens in Turmoil.......2003-07-06
There is no book that I would recommend more highly to families struggling with the teens in their lives. So many of us scratch our heads in dismay at what became of those precious children we raised as they morph into disrespectful, manipulative, defiant members of the household. So many families feel like they are "walking on eggshells" when their teenager is at home and they worry about where they really are and what they are doing when they're not home. I read a number of books that were interesting and gave me a few insights about how to deal with our daughter but they were really only bandaid approaches. I was on the verge of giving up hope until I read this book.
Carol provides an uncanny insight into some of the reasons why these behaviors have developed and then, based on the level of difficulty you are experiencing with your child, she offers actual possible courses of action! She describes in depth where to get more information or help depending on what you think will most benefit your own relationships. Finally, at the end she lists her website where you can e-mail her directly for personal help if you are not sure what your child really needs.
I almost did not read this book as I had read so many that did not really help. But, I picked it up and leafed through it and immediately knew this was the one we needed. Reading it gave us real direction. Taking the action that we decided on has made a life changing difference in all of our lives. She discusses all the areas of adolescence that are so powerful in the world today including lying, alcohol, drugs, sexual acting out and more. Our daughter is in a program that is transforming her into a strong, confident, responsible person and we are all much closer and communicating on an intimate level I never expected to be able to achieve. There are many more fabulous programs out there that the average family counseling does not know about or understand. Carol is knowledgeable about virtually all of them and, if you choose, as we did, she helped us discern exactly which program would benefit our daughter the most. We are getting our daughter back thanks to this book and the action we took.
I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK HIGHLY ENOUGH.
For Average Parent of Not So Average Kid.......2002-05-07
There are some excellent scenarios to fit different kinds of kids and parents. I will definitely suggest this book to others. The only drawback is that is is written by two therapists from a sort of counseling perspective. If you are willing to address your imperfections this book will help. It will also aid in knowing how to deal with manipulation, lying, guilt, blame, parent splitting, medication and denial. A good read.
Guidance when you need it.......2000-04-29
Our son is not our first child. My wife and I had been concerned for some time about aspects of his teenage behavior. However, we weren't sure if that behavior was a real problem or something that would typically pass in the transition to adulthood. Teens in Turmoil was pivotal in coming to our realization that not only was our son was at risk but his behavior required immediate action on our part.
At a time when we, as parents, felt alone, confused and desperate for information Teens in Turmoil provided a path to recapture our lives and a future for our son. Through case descriptions of adolescents at risk, insight into the underlying causes of self-defeating behaviors and suggested courses of action, this book helped us act decisively.
Teens in Turmoil was instrumental in pushing us to act and take the first steps to reclaim our lives and our son. If you are considering this book, chances are you will find that Dr. Maxym has put her finger squarely on your child's behavior in a concise manner that ties together seemingly chaotic elements of teen conduct. We recommend it enthusiastically and without reservation.
A Wonderful Guide.......2000-03-15
As the parent of a teen who has gone through a couple of very difficult years, I have been on a continual search for some sort of guidance to help us navigate this period. Our bookshelf housing teen and family titles is the most extensive of anyone I know. Finding "Teens in Turmoil" has been a blessing. After having been told to see another therapist, another psychiatrist or to try another medication, what a relief it was to find a perspective which encourages taking ownership of the problem and accepting responsibility to survive (for both the teen and the parents). The case studies, while not exactly like our situation and in many ways much more serious, have proved invaluable. The book has encouraged us both in terms of the way we are handling things, as well as the psychological aspect of not being the only ones with our type of problem. What a helpful guidebook! Anyone who is struggling with serious issues of parenting a teen in turmoil will not find a better book. I could not recommend this book more highly!

Customer Reviews:
Needed addition in suicide literature.......1998-05-23
This is the first book I've seen that looks at a suicide attempt from the family's perspective. In so doing, it acknowledges the family's terror, the stigma issues the family faces, and the family's love for their child as they struggle to try to understand and help.
Williams helps parents explore their own feelings about suicide, encourages parents to overcome their reluctance to reach out for help and support, then discusses suicide issues and theraputic approaches.
On one hand, the book seems too simplistic. It doesn't discuss the impact of the suicidal person's moods and behaviours on the family; the terrifying roller coaster of therapists and medication before the right combination is found; the families torn as they try to help their precious child.
But the author's calm, compassionate presentation may be the more useful and helpful approach, particularly for parents who have never been to any kind of mental health professional and are afraid of being blamed for their child's behaviour.

Book Description
Lack of access to affordable high quality child care is frequently the tipping point that catapults a family into poverty, joblessness, and homelessness-a constant threat to the well-being of women and children. Polakow spent a year traveling around the country listening to low-income women from diverse backgrounds tell their stories of struggle, resilience, distress, and occasional success as they encountered ongoing child care crises. The resulting work is both a compelling account of the lived realities of the child care crisis, and an incisive critique of public policy that points to the United States as an outlier in the international community. Drawing on historical and international perspectives, Polakow creates a groundbreaking analysis of child care as a human right, persuasively arguing for a universal child care system.

If you work with kids, you've got to have this book!.......2006-11-26
Don't be put off by the price because this book is worth its weight in gold. As a public school teacher, I refer to this book throughout the year, each and every year. We can't assume our children know what "teamwork", appropriate behavior or even "good sportmanship" is. We often need to provide explicit instruction and plenty of practice. This book offers literally hundreds of activities to teach those social and interpersonal skills many of our kids seem to lack. My classroom is a happy, welcoming, enjoyable oasis in the school thanks to Dr. Borba's book.
Outstanding curriculum guide and resource for all educators........1999-08-12
I've referred to this guide every August as I create long-term plans for the school year. The ideas and activities help cement a sense of harmony and safety in my classroom. The program works because it builds upon the five sequential components of healthy self-esteem. I've implemented this curriculum in both an inner-city and a more rural setting--with success. Dr. Borba offers such endless ideas for all ages. This curriculum is easy to integrate into the school day, and it encourages school-wide participation. The program also offers powerful long-range effects: children learn to set realistic goals and define their sense of mission. A must-have for all educators and administrators.

Here is a book that forthrightly examines this problem from the perspective of an internationally renowned nutritionist and a holistically trained physician.
Learn why:
* 1 out of every 5 American children is overweight.
* The incidence of asthma has increased 61% in the past 20 years.
* Increased teen violence may be attributable to the prescribed use of some antidepressant drugs.
* Immunizations may be related to autism in infants and children.
* 2 out of 5 of today's teenagers are likely to later develop osteoporosis.
* Environmental and food toxins may cause neurological and behavioral problems.
* Commonly prescribed amphetamines are not the answer to ADHD.
* Eating disorders among teenagers have reached near epidemic proportions.
The authors present a positive, balanced approach to health and nutrition that addresses these issues and offers hope to millions of undernourished, overmedicated children and their families.

An excellent guide.......2003-08-13
I've read a few books on nutrition as it relates to health but few compare with this one. In "Our Children's Health" author Bonnie Minsky details the "nutritional crisis" of America's children. She does an excellent job of discussing allergies, food intolerances, asthma, immune system dysfunction, ADD and other learning and behavior disorders, autism spectrum disorders, vaccines, osteoporosis, eating disorders, depression, and violence and how each of these may be affected by nutritional or environmental factors. With lots of charts, descriptions, suggestions, and other detailed information this first section is easy to follow and use.
The second section of the book covers how you can ensure that your child can have optimum health by discovering environmental and nutritional problems and fixing them. The section on a diet that can be used to determine your child's food and chemical sensitivities was especially useful. Using it anyone can work through the system to determine what he or she and their children should be avoiding. It also includes nutritional support regimens for athletes and children. Finally, the appendix details some safe household product alternatives to ones with more toxic chemicals.
"Our Children's Health" is a recommended read for anyone concerned about nutritional health of their self or their children. It is also recommended for those who want to seek alternative holistic approaches to some common problems of childhood.
Everyone should read this book!.......2002-09-16

Finally, a book with meaningful, actionable information about the health problems of our children. Enough with the pills! The authors suggest we start with food and environment and watch the changes. No matter what page I opened, the information was relevant. A great reference/resource book.
