Book Description
In this rare, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in hospitals across the country, a longtime medical insider and international authority on childbirth assesses the flawed American maternity care system, powerfully demonstrating how it fails to deliver safe, effective care for both mothers and babies. Written for mothers and fathers, obstetricians, nurses, midwives, scientists, insurance professionals, and anyone contemplating having a child, this passionate exposé documents how, in the most expensive maternity care system in the world, women have lost control over childbirth and what the disturbing results of this phenomenon have been. Born in the USA examines issues including midwifery and the safety of out-of-hospital birth, how the process of becoming a doctor can adversely affect both practitioners and their patients, and why there has been a rise in the use of risky but doctor-friendly interventions, including the use of Cytotec, a drug that has not been approved by the FDA for pregnant women. Most importantly, this gripping investigation, supported by many troubling personal stories, explores how women can reclaim the childbirth experience for the betterment of themselves and their children.
Born in the USA tells:
* Why women are 70% more likely to die in childbirth in America than in Europe
* What motivates obstetricians to use dangerous and unnecessary drugs and procedures
* How the present malpractice crisis has been aggravated by the fear of accountability
* Why procedures such as cesarean section and birth inductions are so readily used

Every woman should read this book.......2007-09-08
This book should be make available to all women having babies, in all book stores right next to "What to Expect When Your Expecting", and other bools like that. "Born in the U.S.A.", tells the truth about the harm done to women, and their babies in the American medical services system. I refer to health care as medical services, because there is very little healthy caring going on in America. I'm a former RN who belives in doing right by my patients, thats why I'm a former RN. If you read "Born in the U.S.A.", you will get a clear picture of why nurses leave and women are damaged.
Born in the USA.......2007-09-01
This book was excellent, an eye opener, it should be read by every person involved in the care of pregnant women. It was very encouraging to me, as i work in a natural birthing center, and it strengthened my belief in and commitment to midwifery, natural childbirth and out-of-hospital birth. Wagner is very thorough, breaking down the valid (and invalid) research, readable and comprehendable even for those not in the medical/scientific fields. I only wish he went into more detail about the dangers of medications during labor (narcotics, epidurals, etc). Taking birth out of the hospital setting for all healthy pregnant woman will mean no more artificial means of pain relief which i think will be the hardest sell to american women who have been taught to fear labor pain and usually are depending on that quick fix (epidural).
If you are having a baby or know anyone who is this is a MUST READ!.......2007-08-28
America is pretty screwed up with our birth practices, and this just shows exactly how much!! A MUST READ if you are involved with babies and birth at all!!
Every OB, MW, CBE, doula and parent should own this book!.......2007-07-20
Childbirth professionals, educators and expecting parents should fully understand the U.S. maternity system, how it is broken, how to fix it and what this means to them! Childbirth is negatively affected everyday with the loss of the mother's life, loss of the baby's life, permanent or temporary damage to the baby or mother or bad emotional experiences as a result of a traumatic childbirth related to the unnecessary and overuse and overtreatment of laboring mothers and in-utereo babies with medical interventions, episiotomies and cesarean sections. Dr. Wagner captures the reader's attention from the start with his honesty and experience. It is very rare to have a glimpse into the world of medicine and obstetrics that is as truth-telling and eye-opening as this. I recommend everyone involved in childbirth to read this book!!
Do it for your patients, your sisters, your wives, your daughters, your friends...

So Right On!.......2007-07-08
I am a certified doula and attend homebirths and hospital births. I leave the hospital births often feeling sad, depressed and discouraged and worrying about the health of the mother and newborn. What I see happening to child-bearing women in hospitals is downright criminal, and Marsden Wagner exposes it all; this is not hype, I see it happening with almost every hospital birth; please, if you are considering birthing in a hospital, read this book, it is an eye-opening expose. And consider having a homebirth, it's very, very safe!

Growing Up First Born.......2007-10-06
This is an excellent book if you can get your hands on it. It helped me realize why I am different than my siblings.
Growing Up Firstborn.......2001-11-04
If you or the one you love was the firstborn son or daughter in your family, read this book. Otherwise read "The Birth Order Book." It is amazing how many things about our personalities seem to determined by the order in which we were born into the family.
As I read this book, I was suprised at how well I was described in these pages as first born son. I have since also read the "Birth Order Book" and found it helpful as I sought to understand my siblings better. And both books are helpful now as I seek to be there for my boys.
My world tilted on its axis!.......2000-05-09
This book has not only helped me understand myself (an "only child") but also helped me avoid some of the pitfalls in raising my widely spaced children. I have recommended it to many people over the years, and withouth exception they have found it illuminating and practical. With humor and compassion, Leman lead me to acceptance of certain traits and the release of others. It has definitely made me a better parent, and a better person.
It was a great help to me........1999-04-11
As a first born, this book helped me understand more about the who & why about myself. It helped to understand my parents and my siblings. It brought to my attention that I am not the only one in my family that is a First Born. Dr. Leman has a great sense of humor which helps lighten up areas that were difficult to read about. He not only provided information about me but also included techniques and processes to help get past some of the bad feelings. This book is not just for the first born. It is for parents and siblings.
There were some theories that were interesting but hard to completely believe in.

Very good and entertaining reading. Good character development and to know it's based on Frank's life makes it even better. Glad he wrote this book!

Disappointed.......2007-06-12
The book struck me as silly and it bored my 6-year old, who wouldn't sit through it. It is also overtly Christian, so if you don't want to send a message about Christian God, it's not appropriate. I returned it.
A must have.......2006-11-10
All parents of first borns should own this book. It is laugh out loud funny and brings tears of joy to your eyes. This book rang so true to our first born, even though he's of a different gender than the character in the book. I buy this for all my friends!
Too Stereoptyped.......2005-09-14
I am a psychologist and bought all 3 books in the series when my son's wife gave birth to his 3rd child. I didn't preview it before I read these books to the oldest as well as to newly deemed "middle child." I was disapointed and a bit apologetic to their parents when we all read it together. These children knew the message(s) in the book were related to them. I felt that since they are so young, they were getting a message about how they were going to (or should) turn out. Also, there were references to Christmas and I felt this didn't leave room for people who celebrate other holidays than those. I thought the concept of the book was good. From the title, I was mainly interested in the message that the mother loves all three of her children, recognises differences, but loves them just the same. I wish the author would have just adhered to that theme and left the predictions about their personalities and behavior out of it.

Good for older children older than five........2005-08-09
This book is very good to read to your firstborn. I purchased it as something special to read since baby sister came along. It is a little long winded for younger children. I have a four year old that is very interested in books and she was a little bored. I think the reading sections on each page are a too long for her. It is still a very good book. I look forward to sharing it with her more in the future.
Great gift for the new big sisters and brothers.......2005-08-02
I ordered all 3 of the books in this series as gifts to my children upon the arrival of our third child. My oldest is three and she loves for me to read this story to her and tell her about the events of her birth and life. It really helped her feel special in her place in our growing and changing family!
Book Description
Jason Trayhern wore his father's glorious military legacy like a thorny crown. Though a skilled fighter pilot himself, Jason's rebel tactics didn't sit well with his commanding officers. They expected more from Morgan Trayhern's son, which was why they gave Jason another chance. But that chance felt like a death sentence. For Jason was going into combat with a new partner. And she was all too . . .female.
A handsome, arrogant daredevil was the last thing Annie Dazen needed in her cockpit. But once she saw the wounded heart beneath Jason's tough-guy façade, she longed to heal him. And once she discovered the passion in this brooding soldier's touch, she longed to hold him tight. Now the stakes were higher. Because if she hoped to see a future with her would-be hero, they needed to survive their dangerous mission first!

Military? stay away.......2004-08-02
Truthfully, I couldn't get past the first third of the book. The mistakes McKenna makes with regards to the military are horrible. One reviewer already mentioned that she got the ranks wrong, but it goes way beyond there. There's a ton of mistakes with regards to uniforms, and decorum, even things as basic as the main character not having her hair up off her collar. I kept trying to get past it, and just when I thought I could get back into the swing of the story, up would pop another mistake. Maybe some someone who only read military themed books because they're exciting could get past it. But I'm ex-Army myself and every five pages I wanted to knock my head against the wall. I would have actually given it One Star, but I gave Ms. McKenna the benefit of the doubt and decided on two, since I couldn't get past the glaring errors into the actual plot of the book. For all I know, that might be okay. I just didn't make it there.
Don't Bother.......2004-07-06
As a loyal fan of MS Mckenna's early works I was very disappointed with this book. Ms Mckenna has many military books to her credit so... why in book #23 would she get something as simple as military ranks wrong. She has her hero going the wrong directions from a CWO3 to a CWO2 as a promotion. OPPS! This has been a growing problem with her more current books as well; a case in point she refers to women in the Navy as Waves. There haven't been WAVES in the Navy since the 70's. So a book in 1990's present shouldn't use that word, it isn't accurate and takes the knowledgable reader out of the story. If she can't get it right then get a copy editor who can. Military romance readers expect books to get military issues right, or why bother using the military theme.
Add to this the plethra of backstory filler about Morgan's story, which her loyal readers know, slowed the pace down considerably and didn't add to the story at all. Even if the reader didn't know Morgan's story so much backstory took away from the H/H own story and it ended abruptly. Had that filler not been there would have been more pages for a more intense story line for this H/H who deserved better care from such a seasoned author. The Native American mysticism was over done and a bit too preachy which short changed this reader's appreciation of the heroine.
She never created a believable enough dark moment from which the h/h can come to terms with their future. The hero has a big change in attitude but the transistion was not believable as it was not done through growth but NA mysticism. There was a lot unsaid here between Morgan and Jason and this reader felt cheated. We see no change in the heroine at all, she comes off as too perfect and not real. The story ended all too quickly leaving a bland taste in my mouth. It would be nice if Ms Mckenna can find her voice again like her books RED TAIL and BEGINNINGS.
If you have to read it find in a used bookstore.
First Born is a disappointment.......2004-06-07
I had eagerly awaited the arrival of First Born. It started out very well. It answered some of the questions I had about the treatment of Jason when he was kidnapped by the drug lords. After that the book goes down hill. He turns into Mr. Nice guy by just being around the heroine Annie. Then he gets wounded. He loses his memory. It seems to be a rewrite of Morgan's story of amnesia. Ms. McKenna makes a gigantic error in time and personel when puts Jason's great grandparents in World War II. In Dawn of Valor, Chase and Rachel Trayhern are in Korea as a pilot and a MASH nurse. Since they are Jason's grandparents, there is no way that this is possible. That is an error that ruined my appreciation of the book. I am a faithful reader. I hope that her next book is better, or that she gets an editor that is more familiar with previous works.

Most refreshing!.......2004-08-23
This is a superb romance anyway, but I was delighted to see one with mature characters instead of the usual under-25 crowd. Tate's a divorcee with teens when he inherits his uncle's winery. Throw pretty widow Colette and her daughters into the mix, and you have the key for an intriguing tale as Tate and his brothers enter the winemaking business- and find love along the way. You'll want to read the whole series!
Exquisite Writing, Exquisite Setting.......2002-08-30
This book was recommended. I read and was not disappointed. The talented Muriel Jensen has crafted a wonderful book that features characters so real and a setting so rich that it, too, becomes a character. You'll love Tate Delancey, who with his brothers Mike and Shea, inherit an Oregon winery. Each brother needs a change and so they decide to keep the winery and restore it. The current manager is prickly Colette Palmer, a widow with two daughters and a boatload of mental baggage. Tate, a transplanted Easterner, must use tact and a lot of cunning to get the widow to decide a lifetime with him is exactly what she needs.
Look for well-developed characters throughout, interesting details on winery management that don't overshadow the love story. And look for Mike's story, the next in this exciting trilogy.
Superb romance with a duo of delightful Delanceys to come.......1998-12-24
Boston architect Tate Delancey feels lonely and dissatisfied with his current life. His former spouse, married a diplomat, and moved the family, including Tate's two beloved biological daughters to Paris. His two partners fell in love and married each other. When the Fax arrived that his missing Uncle Jack has legally been declared dead, Tate has mixed feelings. He prays that wherever his uncle is (on earth or elsewhere), he is happy. However, Tate relishes starting over with the Oregon winery he inherited along with his two siblings.
Tate meets his two brothers (Mike and Shea) in Oregon to decide what to with the winery. Currently running the place is Colette Palmer, a widow with two small children. Though the facilities look like hell, Colette has managed to keep the vines in superb shape. As the attraction grows between Tate and Colette, she continues to fight him, leaving it up to the transplanted easterner to persuade her that they can share a lifetime of happiness together.
The first novel in Muriel Jensen's "Delancey" trilogy is a warm second chance at love story that fans of the theme will devour. The story line is fun as the lead protagonists and the three Delancey brothers continually argue, fuss, and fight. The characters are all wonderful as Ms. Jensen creates fully developed protagonists. Readers will clearly want to peruse Mike's tale, scheduled for release in June.

An apprentice swordsman, Locke has ridden the narrow trail to the City of the Sorcerers to see with his own eyes the Ward Walls that hold back the realms of Chaos. It is Locke's dream to become a Chaos Rider, and seek his destiny beyond the Wall. It is Locke's hope that somewhere, in the wildness where time and change rage out of control, his lost father still survives.
But more than just survival is at stake. For on the other side of the Wall awaits a Darkness beyond all ken--and evil inchoate that will test the steel of one young hero and, indeed, all of that bold and foolish race called humankind.

Fantastic.......2003-07-04
First of all, do yourself a favor and don't skip ahead in the book, you'll ruin it. This story is Stackpole at his best. An original setting, convincingly and logically written. The author clearly considered the implications of the environment he created. The foreshadowing was available without being obvious; characters were well described and seemed to stay within prescribed personalities. The only qualm I had with this book was that toward the end it was hard to keep track of who was alive, who might be dead, and who was really dead. Fortunately, that's all explicitly stated close to the end of the novel.
An excellent read, order it and enjoy. If you want further excellence from Stackpole read The Dragoncrown War cycle, starting with Dark Glory War.
Good start...where is the end?.......2002-07-26
This book is pretty good...very readable. Only problem with this book is that it is a start of a Trilogy that does not end. The second book does not have the main character in it but is also a very readable book despite the shift of spotlight.
Truly unique.......2002-07-14
Yeah, I've never come across a book quite like this. Stackpole really managed to create a very unique and fascinating setting. The characters are fleshed-out individuals too. See, a long time ago, some wizards screwed up a massive ritual. Now, except for a nation that the wizards reclaimed from the destruction, most of the world is ruled by a twisting wave of chaos, that inevitably and unpredictably changes everything it touches--including adventurers. Yet, there are those who for one reason or another feel compelled to venture into that chaos. Such a one is the hero, Locke. Locke seems like the flattest of all the characters in the book, but trust me, he's not. Meanwhile, the other 'chaos-riders' are amazing examples of characters. Magicians, mutants, and warriors, one way or another each character gets drafted into Locke's mission. And the best part is, you don't figure out the answers till the very end!
Though it's good, the second book in the series focuses on a different character, which I find unfair. So here's hoping another one turns up soon!
Science-Fiction Fan.......2001-12-21
When I read all the books my 8th grade teacher had available (the books my teacher we like a 6th grade reading level to me), I went in search of a book. Not just any book. I was looking for a challenge and I came upon this book. I picked it up thinking, what a weird cover. I started reading it and immediatly got hooked. I bought it from the store, took it home, went to my room, and never came out for hours. When I finished the book I read it again. I can't wait to read the second book! Michael A. Stackpole is now my favorite author. Keep up the good work!
All Right!.......2001-08-04
I loved this story! Very well written, suspenseful, with some interesting twists and a good healthy dose of versimilitude. The main characters weren't necessarily invulnerable, which I feel is very realistic. EXCELLENT BOOK!!!

Outstanding.......2003-01-21
I know this book has been around for almost 2 decades and I am know finally reading it. WOW!!!!!! This book had me crying, cursing, loving and hating with every line I read. The characters and the plot were outstanding. I do hope one day they do make it into a movie or TV miniseries, but when they do I hope they do the book justice and capture every detail that Doris Mortman wrote down. Fantansic job!!! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!
Absolutely wonderful.......2002-04-02
This is absolutely without a doubt the best book I have ever read. I have never had a book be able to make me laugh and cry like this book did. These womens stories were truly touching and extremely well written. I could not put this book down! I was up til 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning reading this book a couple nights.
firstborn.......2000-03-27
This is book is about 4 women, all cousins and all named after their late grandmother. This book such a great book that i think it shouldv'e made into a movie...... i really love the storyline
It was the BEST!!!!!.......1997-03-14
I truly loved the whole plot of this book. The separate stories from each of the women's lives were fascinating. The history of the family was discussed at appropriate points. This book would actually make a great TV movie. I am surprised that nobody has thought of making the movie. There are plenty of actresses who would be terrific in the parts of the four women.
