Book Description

Readers captivated by Twilight and New Moon will eagerly devour Eclipse, the much anticipated third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob --- knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?

3 out of 5 stars This book was well written.......2007-10-16

I loved the back stories of the Cullen family and the history of Jacob's heritage of how the werewolves came to be. The plot with Victoria was a little predictable, but satisfying to me. I live to figure out plots before the ending. The day to day life of Bella is always an appealing feature in these books. Stephenie is always great at capturing the teenage angst and mentality of her age. Although... I feel that these books are read mainly for the relationship issues Bella has with the men in her life, and that is the problem I had with this book. Jacob does a lot of asinine things in this book, and Bella keeps going back to him, forgiving him (where I couldn't). While I realize that some girls like the "bad boys", I believe she has her hands full with Edward. By Bella riding the fence so long in this book, it made her look contrite and fickle. I lost any identification and likability of the charater. It was a little too reminiscent of the Anita Blake series for me, personally. I was also really dissapointed with the epilogue, as I feel that it didn't really do the job of an epilogue. I also would have appreciated a little more action. I am not excited about the fifth book in the Forks series, but I am looking forward to the Sci-fi and Midnight Sun book she's got coming out soon. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it. While I'm near the end, I'm reading it at a rapid pace because it's so addictive. There is something about his books that bring you in and get you hooked. and I'm loving this one.

5 out of 5 stars Twilight Serier.......2007-10-16

I absolutley loved the Twilight Series. All three books are a real treat. I am not a teenager, and haven't been one for a long time, but I really am obsessed by these books. I've already read them over three times and gone over my favorite parts time and time again. I discovered all these books at once so now am anxious for the fourth book to come out. I also am dying to read Midnight Sun. Hopefully Stephanie will get this finished sometime in the near future.

I don't agree with the folks that don't like Eclipse. For me at least it was very entertaining, and I will never get enough of Edward and Bella fawning over each other.

I loved Jacob as Bella's devoted friend, but I didn't like it when he became a werewolf and was so demanding and angry. I just couldn't picture Bella with a 6'7" shaggy man. Edward was just so much more intriging to me.

3 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointed.......2007-10-16

I am a huge fan of Twilight and New Moon. Sad to say that Eclipse did not have that hold. Bella is confussed and does not even know it.
I like Edward's character so i wont say anything bad about him in this review. Jacob, well Jacob is not that nice anymore, kindda annoying (actually really annoying). I dont know what to say without spoiling it for those that have not yet read it. but i loved the first two, even if New Moon didnt have that much Edward. I just think Bella could have been more mature in this book.
Hopefully in the fourth book, she redeems herself and lets go of the Love Triangle theme Eclipse had.
But do i recommend it?
Yeah, apart from the love triangles and whinning. You will find out stuff about other characters like Jasper and Rosalie. And get to read more about how perfect Edward is. lol

3 out of 5 stars Third book not a charm.......2007-10-15

The third book in this series was a disappointment to me. The overbearing, contolling Cullen family and the submissive, no mind of her own Bella, left me flat. Overall this third book was boring and barely kept my interest. Bella, stick with Jacob.

4 out of 5 stars Eclipse.......2007-10-15

Fascinating. Stephenie Meyer has done a great job with Eclipse. Although some people may not agree with some choices the main character, Bella, does, I think they only help to get across the book's message about real and true love, that goes beyond life or death.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, emotionally-charged book.......2007-10-16

The first time I read this book was in a bookstore where I fought valiantly against the urge to cry copiously. Yesterday, during both readings of my daughter's newly arrived copy, I found my voice breaking and tears starting. In simple prose and spare but beautiful drawings, this book does a simply wonderful job of summing up the complexities of a mother's love for her daughter. I can't think of another book that more perfectly expresses the love I feel for my little girl. I love how the book begins with the newborn and ends with the newborn as an old woman. It led to a discussion with my daughter of how I was once a baby in my own mother's arms and how I have grown to have a daughter of my own. The book does such a lovely job of describing this circle of life. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. I highly recommend this for any mother of a daughter--no matter how young or old your little girl.

5 out of 5 stars If you're a mom, this will make you cry.......2007-10-10

Touching book about being a mom. I've gotten it for my mom friends as a gift, and they all found it very touching. It's geared toward mom/daughter, but the message is sentimental. Cry everytime I read it. Love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-10-10

I absolutely love this book and cry or get emotional almost every time I read it. I have purchased it as a baby book for every woman I know who has recently had a baby girl. Each one of them feels the same for it. It is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Mother's Storybook Wish for Her Child.......2007-10-04

SOMEDAY is a mother's heartfelt storybook wish for her child -- that her child will grow up healthy, experience great joys, and someday have a family of her own. It's also a wish that she will be lovingly remembered by her child ("Someday, a long time from now, your own hair will glow silver in the sun. And when that day comes, love, you will remember be.") The book is reminiscent of Robert Munsch's Love You Forever, but the storyline is simpler and more realistic. The illustrations complement the story beautifully. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars touching, to say the least.......2007-09-21

This book brings me to tears at the very thought of it. I got about 1/2 way through the darling pictures and wonderful, sweet words and the tears started. By the time I finished I was a mess. I'm sure it will touch every mother who reads it-it is definitely a book for a baby girl or daughter since the pictures depict a mother/daughter relationship. It's about the simple memories we make with our children that mean more than anything. It's also about the dreams we hold for them. I now have a FAVORITE new book, one that will definitely be bought for others as well. Don't miss this one!

Legions of readers entranced by Twilight are hungry for more and they won't be disappointed. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural twist. The "star-crossed" lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, astounding, breathtaking, dazzling... absolutely MAGICAL. .......2007-10-16

There aren't enough words to describe the impact this book has on a person. It was every bit as sensational as Twilight. I must warn you before you begin reading this book that Eclipse (the next book in the series) won't be coming out until 2007. After reading the last page you'll understand my warning. If I had one wish in the world it would be that Stephenie Meyer published Eclipse tomorrow. I know most people feel the same way because I have yet to find a person who hasn't enjoyed this series as much as I have. This book, like Twilight is extremely unique. It is very hard to explain the way you feel while reading, I can only say that it allows you to comprehend every aspect of human emotion. I can say the same thing for very few books, if I had to describe New Moon in a sentence I would have to say... Painful to put down and utterly heartbreaking to finish. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it. While I'm near the end, I'm reading it at a rapid pace because it's so addictive. There is something about his books that bring you in and get you hooked. and I'm loving this one.

1 out of 5 stars Author should condense Twilight, New Moon & Eclipse into one book.......2007-10-15

Twilight made me crave more. So, I purchased New Moon. Much to my dismay the wording is extremely flowery. I wish Ms. Meyer would just say exactly what she wants to say straight to the point and not repeat the same old stuff over and over again. Honestly, there's a lot of pages though it doesn't say much. I think it could have been very easily condensed into one book with Twilight and Eclipse.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But . . ........2007-10-15

While I was reading this book, I liked it, until I got done with it and realized how much I didn't care for the subject matter. If you're into fantasy (which I'm not) and vampire romance, then you'll love this. Otherwise, you'll be caught up in the action, and realize in the end that you fell for the hype.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it as much as the first!.......2007-10-15

I liked "Twilight" because contrary to most vampire novels, there wasn't a lot of sex and biting, but a real love story. The storyline is sweet and innocent and very endearing.

This installment in the Bella/Edward saga finds Bella still head over heels in love with Edward. During an unfortunate incident, Bella and Edward find out how much their love is costing everyone...including those around them. See that is what I love so much about this story, and Charlie Huston's vampire novels (If you haven't read them, please do. They are definately for the more mature reader, but gritty and wonderful. Already Dead and No Dominion.), it is the tension between doing what is your nature to do (be a vampire...take blood and make others into beings like you) and the desire to retain a bit of your humanity (by fighting what is your nature to be). Edward struggles daily (one can infer) with his desire to claim Bella, and his desire to have her experience everything their is to experience in life (especially since she is only 17 and hasn't finished high school yet. He is about 80. Of course, that is a whole nother issue that I will save for another day.). So, once Edward realizes or makes the decision that Bella would be safer or better off without him, his whole family packs up and moves away, leaving Bella lost and lonely. And (contrary to other reviews) we see her do what most teenage girls who think they are truly in love do....she falls into a black hole of despair and grief, only to reemerge with the appearance of Jacob Black, her new best friend and member of the Quileute indian tribe, who has a mirad of secrets. He inspires her to do things that ordinarily she would not do (ride motorcycles and cliff dive).

Now this is also where I depart from other reviewers who ask "what is so special about Bella and why would both Edward and Jacob want her so much"? I think that that is why they both want her so much....because she is so ordinary that no one realizes just how special she is. I don't think that she is plain or boring, I think quite the contrary. I think she is so extraordinary, that that is why most boys want her. Those who criticize Bella have forgotten that Mike, Tyler and several other boys liked Bella when she first arrived in Forks, not just Jacob or Edward.

Anyway, New Moon is about two things in a nutshell.....(1) how does one go on once they suffer from a broken heart? and (2) It is symbolic of the changes, both physical and mental, that Jacob, Bella and Edward are undergoing, a transformation of sorts. Who knows how it will all end? But this book is also about hope, love, and understanding.

This book introduces us to a number of new characters: the Quileute tribe and Jacobs friends, a wonderful werewolf pact, and a fearsome vampire clan (among them a tiny vampire who has the power to inflict pain). And there is also the reintroduction of old characters, Victoria (who wants revenge for her lover's death), the Cullens, Charlie, Renee', Mike, Jessica and the rest of the gang. And as graduation draws near, we have only to find out what is to become of Bella, Edward and Jacob. Who will she pick? And hopefully, in Eclipse there will be some resolution about Victoria and the group in Italy who want Bella for themselves.

My only criticisms are that I think based on everything that Bella has been through, she needs to (1) stop doubting her own appeal and (2) punish Edward...well not exactly punish Edward, but make it harder for him just to come back. He thinks he is being selfless, but I think he is being more selfishness than anything. It is of course easier to be apart, but it will take real work to be together. That is the whole point. Together they can overcome all obstacles, while separately they will be defeated. I mean, ultimately, he is thinking of what is easier for himself (I know people are going to disagree with me) and not what is easier or better for both of them. If for no other reason than, we know that even without Edward in Bella's life, she still finds danger. LOL

5 out of 5 stars New Moon.......2007-10-15

Part 2 of the Twilight Series. you fall in love with other characters in this book but it still all comes down to edward and bella! Great book. i loved the first better but this was still a satisfying sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-10-05

This book was recommended to me by a newly married woman with stepchildren. I, at the time, was dating a woman with children (none of my own). I was having a difficult time being an 'instant father', and didn't know what to do half the time. I loved this book, and used the information daily. When I am around children now, I still use the information in the book. When I have children of my own, you better believe I'll be re-reading this one. (I also bought this book for my brother)

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE!.......2007-09-19

There are not enough good things to say about this book. I have it in conjunction with Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood and contrary to some other reviewers, I love having them both together.

I can't recommend this parenting technique enough. I have a 2 year old boy and we started using love and logic principles just after his 2nd birthday. What a difference it made in us all!!! Just like the authors say - it puts the fun back in being a parent. We are always getting comments on his calm demeanor and our ability to always be patient.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a child, toddler to preteen, this book will change the family for the better. It gives you the exact things to say in all kinds of situations, in fact half to book is dedicated to doing just that. This book gives you the tools to restore peace, happiness, hope, order and fun back into your home. I'm so thankful for this book!

5 out of 5 stars THE best parenting book ever.......2007-09-18

All my friend and I SWEAR by this book. This my not be the ONLY book you need, but it surely is one key book you MUST have. Extremely practical - there are actual cases and actual phrases to use, while explaining the philosophy behind the approach. This is the ultimate "how to" book on raising responsible, moral, kind children who understand cause and effect! It also takes the "you vs me" out of it and teaches children that their choices and actions have consequences. As a Christian, it sits well with me. It is especially excellent with defiant or contrary children, and children raise in foster homes or others who have attachment challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Best parenting book my wife and I have found.......2007-09-03

This is an excellent book on parenting, the best my wife and I have found. The principles work very well - we wish we had found it earlier. We and our children are much happier after using this book.

This is very sound parenting. This book teaches you how to raise responsible children who think about the consequences of their actions. It teaches principles and gives you strategies to help your children anticipate the real consequences of their actions - a good thing to learn when you're still a child and "the price tag is still low."

This book is not the draconian book that some negative reviewers have interpretted it to be. The authors advocate genuine compassion for children who experience realistic consequences to their bad choices. It is true that the principles in this book likely require more work on the part of the parent than other approaches.

Regarding whether this book advocates corporal punishment - it does not. Page 221 from the 2006 edition:

"Spankings ... give kids a quick escape from the responsibility of living with a bad choice. Instead of having to live with consequences and think about solutions, youngsters have a brief moment of pain, and then they're off the hook."

"The original edition of this book advocateded the use of spanking in limited, controlled situations. However, as we have grown in our professions and as more valid research has become available, we have changed our postion. There are many good reasons to avoid the use of spankings...[list follows]."

1 out of 5 stars Sick authors.......2007-08-30

Any author who presents themselves as wanting to help children and then advocates corporal punishment is a sociopath at worst or terribly misguided at best. They should never yield power over someone smaller or weaker than themselves. Maybe the authors need to be physically bullied (ex. spanked) by someone 100+ lbs bigger than them so they can feel what a child feels when some stupid or gullible adult follows their advice. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Parents and caregivers- please think long and hard before you hit the children who are depending on you for love and protection. There are much better ways of discipling children. Learn them.

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat."

As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.

Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer

Q: Were you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Angel? What are you watching now that those shows are off the air?
A: I have never seen an entire episode of Buffy or Angel. While I was writing Twilight, I let my older sister read along chapter by chapter. She's a huge Buffy fan and she kept trying to get me to watch, but I was afraid it would mess up my vision of the vampire world so I never did.

I don't have a ton of time for TV, and my kids get rowdy when I have on "mommy shows," but I do have a secret fondness for reality shows (the good ones, at least in my opinion). I always TiVo Survivor, The Amazing Race, and America's Next Top Model.

Q: What inspired you to write Twilight? Is this the beginning of a series? Why write for teens?
A: Twilight was inspired by a very vivid dream, which is fairly faithfully transcribed as chapter thirteen of the book. There are sequels on the way--I'm hard at work editing book two (tentatively titled New Moon) right now, and book three is waiting in line for its turn.
I didn't mean to write for teens--I didn't mean to write for anyone but myself, so I had an audience of one twenty-nine year old (and later one thirty-one year old when my sister started reading). I think the reason that I ended up with a book for teens is because high school is such a compelling time period--it gives you some of your worst scars and some of your most exhilarating memories. It's a fascinating place: old enough to feel truly adult, old enough to make decisions that affect the rest of your life, old enough to fall in love, yet, at the same time too young (in most cases) to be free to make a lot of those decisions without someone else's approval. There's a lot of scope for a novel in that.

Q: What is your favorite vampire story? Fave vampire movie?
A: I guess my favorite vampire story would be The Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice, simply because it's one of the only ones I've ever read. I keep meaning to pick up Bram Stoker's Dracula, because I get asked this question so often and I should probably start with the classics, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Again, I'm afraid to read other vampire books now, for fear of finding things either too similar, or too different from my own vampire world.

Ack! I can't even answer the movie question. I can't remember ever seeing a single vampire movie, outside of clips from Bela Lugosi movies on TV. I don't like true horror movies--my favorite scary movies are all Hitchcock's.

Q: What other young adult authors do you read?
A: My favorite young adult author is L.M. Montgomery I also enjoy J.K. Rowling (but who doesn't?), and Ann Brashares. As a teen, I skipped straight to adult books (lots of sci-fi and Jane Austen), so I'm rediscovering the world of teen literature now.

Amazon.com's Significant Seven
Stephenie Meyer graciously agreed to answer the questions we like to ask every author: the Amazon.com Significant Seven.

Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: The book with the most significant impact on my life is The Book of Mormon. The book with the most significant impact on my life as a writer is probably Speaker for the Dead, by Orson Scott Card, with Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier coming in as a close second.

Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: The CD is easy: Absolution by Muse, hands down. It's harder to give myself just one movie, but the one I watch most frequently is Sense and Sensibility--the one with the screenplay by Emma Thompson. One book is impossible. I'd have to have Pride and Prejudice, but I couldn't live without something by Orson Scott Card and a nice, thick Maeve Binchy, too.

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: My lies are all very, very boring: "No, you really look great in hot pink!" "My children only watch one hour of TV a day." "I didn't eat the last Swiss Cake Roll--it must have been one of the kids." That's the best I've got.

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: It's late at night and the house is silent, but I'm still (miraculously) full of energy. I have my headphones in and I'm listened to a mix of Muse, Coldplay, Travis, My Chemical Romance, and The All-American Rejects. Beside me is a fabulous, and yet mysteriously low in calorie, cheesecake....

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: I'd like it to say that I really tried at the important things. I was never perfect at any of them, but I honestly tried to be a great mom, a loving wife, a good daughter, and a true friend. Under that, I'd want a list of my favorite Simpsons quotes.

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: I'd love to have a chance to talk to Orson Scott Card--I have a million questions for him. Mostly things like, "How do you come up with this stuff?!" But, if he wasn't available, I'd settle for Matthew Bellamy (lead singer of Muse).

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: I'd want something offensive, rather than defensive. Like shooting fireballs from my hands. That way, you're really open to going either way--hero or villain. I like to have choices.

Book Description

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat." As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction.(Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell 10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer Q: Were you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? 4 out of 5 stars A very Teenage Vampire Novel.......2007-10-16

Since half stars are not available, I went ahead and rounded up to a 4, but my actual rating would be 3 1/2.

I picked this book up in the airport on my way to California. The vampire premise intrigued me, as did the tag on the jacket "In the tradition of Anne Rice".

I went into the book knowing nothing about it, and I admit, I was disappointed. Far from Anne Rice, this is a strictly teenage vampire novel. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it WAS a little misleading.

I am 30, but read many books in the YA genre, and appreciate a YA book that appeals to adults as well. But the Twilight Series is very much aimed at teens, and seems as if it could have been written by one. Meyer captures the teen angst and drama quite well, but the main character comes across as shallow and whiney, especially further into the series. I never really quite clicked with her.

The book feels immature to me, and the main character, Bella, is VERY immature. The book hooks you, though, and I have read the second book, and am partway through the third. Will I ever read them again? Probably not.

Another Teen Vampire series, The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith is a far better written series that I would recommend over this one, especially for older readers.

5 out of 5 stars Supernaturally Electrifying.......2007-10-16

Believe every good review of Twilight. It is so fun to read. The characters are so intriguing. I want to know more about them. I have New Moon and Eclipse (books 2 and 3)right in front of me and the only thing keeping me from diving in is finishing this review. Thank you Stephanie Meyers!

5 out of 5 stars WOW..........2007-10-15

I have no idea why it took me so long to read this book. It was breath-taking... Why didn't they have books like this when I was a teen. Even in my 30's this book was amazing. The romance is heady and the overall atmosphere of the book is shadowy and intoxicating. I am almost afraid to read the next book because I cannot imagine it matching this, much less exceeding it...
I have read TONS of vampire romances, mostly adult romantic fiction and this books rivals everyone. Seriously, Sherrilyn Kenyon, JR Ward, and Feehan have a new member of the club. Welcome Stephanie Meyer!

5 out of 5 stars Twilight.......2007-10-15

this series is the best i have ever read!! you will fall totally in love with Edward!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious & gripping.......2007-10-14

It has been a long time since I have read a book that immediately ropes you in and isn't difficult to get to know all the characters, who each are fascinating in their own way and the story line is fantastic! This is a book to take away on a holiday with you, for you won't be able to put it down for long! :)

All children want reassurance that their parents' love runs wide and deep. In Guess How Much I Love You, a young rabbit named Little Nutbrown Hare thinks he's found a way to measure the boundaries of love. In a heartwarming twist on the "I-can-do-anything-you-can-do-better" theme, Little Nutbrown Hare goes through a series of declarations regarding the breadth of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms, or as high as his hops, Little Nutbrown Hare is fondly one-upped by the elder rabbit's more expansive love.

Anita Jeram's illustrations are bound to elicit an "aw" from even the sternest of readers; these loving rabbits are expressive, endearing, and never cloying. In turn, Sam McBratney tells a simple bedtime story of sweet familial love with humor, insight, and a delightful surprise at the end. Children and parents will love snuggling up for this one--a treat to be read again and again, just before the lights are turned out. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1994 by Sam McBratney. 5 out of 5 stars For new baby.......2007-09-22

The first time I heard of this book was in my childbirth class. I loved it so much I had to buy it. I'm hoping it will become one of my baby's favorite books.

5 out of 5 stars Good all-around baby book.......2007-09-19

I bought this baby book based on the reviews and the fact that Guess How Much I Love You is one of my favorite children's books. The book does a nice job of asking enough questions to make a complete record for your baby without being overly burdensome. Some of the other books I looked at seriously asked what the weather was on the day you found out your were pregnant. Seriously, who would care about that? This baby book also gives great suggestions for a few pictures which is helpful--like the place to put a picture of you pregnant. I am very pleased.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Like the Message.......2007-09-15

I know many people love this book. I don't know why. We received one as a gift, and after reading it to my daughter, I was disturbed by the story. I felt sorry for the bunny whose parent invalidated his expression of love on each page. As many other reviewers said, it was a competition the adult wouldn't let the child win. This book contains a mean-spirited, misguided, sad, and disturbing message.

5 out of 5 stars Family favorite.......2007-08-01

"Guess how much I love you" is a classic. The story is a simple dialog between a big rabbit (the parent) and a little rabbit (the baby), each professing and comparing the depth & "height" of their love for each other. We read this book almost every day to our infant daughter. She loves the watercolor illustrations & coos at the pictures. A lovely addition to a kid' book collection.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful - this really is a very good book.......2007-07-24

This is a fabulous book for little children and the grownups who read to them. When children are read to daily, they learn to love reading. Perfect bedtime stories, to calm everyone down and make us ready for sweet dreams. If you can find the LARGE size book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Perfect gifts for any child, and a perfect tradition in your own home and family!

The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way. Then, inevitably, the day comes when she's too old and sick to hold him, and the roles are at last reversed. Each stage is illustrated by one of Sheila McGraw's comic and yet poignant pastels. 1 out of 5 stars I agree - this book is for warped minds.......2007-10-16

I was given this book and only recently got around to reading it to my children (we have lots of books to get through!). It starts out cute, and very quickly declines in to "strange behaviour". I'm a mother of 4 children whom I love dearly, and I do NOT want them to think that I'll be sneaking in to their homes later in life whilst they sleep. How creepy is that. And I really hope my son does not grow as a man who sleeps with his teddy and sucks his thumb. I'm shocked this book was published. Hollywood could make a really creepy movie out of this one.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't like the message.......2007-10-12

This book is very popular with my husbands family so I got it at my baby shower - I didn't like it a bit. Infact I got rid of it. I think any mom that is driving across down to climb up a ladder and into a window to rock her son to sleep is just strange!! I was fine with the book until I saw the picture of her in the car with the ladder on top. I just find that creepy. I won't be reading this to my son and I dread the day I have to tell my inlaws not to read it to him either. Its just creepy!

1 out of 5 stars This is a Top Ten Creepy Children's Book.......2007-10-03

This starts off kind of cute. The mother has a child in her arms and she tells him, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be." As an expression of a parent's unconditional love it's a great little saying from a mother to her son. And then you turn the pages, the kid gets older, and the you see the mom sneaking into the teenage son's bedroom and repeating the mantra. It seems a little Oedipus, as I'd not really like to think about my mom sneaking into my room when I was a teenager but ok, still kind of cute.

Then the son gets married and moves away. Happy ending? Not exactly. Now the mother straps a ladder to her car, drives across town, and breaks into the son's house, sneaks into his bedroom and while he's sleeping with his wife next to him tells him "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be." Ok, having seen Psycho, I have to say I'm a bit disturbed. This continues through the son's life, until the mother is dying, and the son repeats her mantra back to her.

The last page in the book shows the son, cradling his newborn, repeating his mother's mantra to the baby, and the cycle repeats. If this were a movie, I would have expected the creepy horror music to well up, have the son look into the camera and start an evil cackle as the picture faded to black.

5 out of 5 stars A comfort.......2007-10-03

It was my Kindergarten teacher who introduced me to this book when I was about five years old. It was a hard time for me at that age because my mom was gone a lot but this book made it a little easier. The song "I'll love you forever" still rings true today and occasionally I even get a little misty eyed. Looking back I remember singing it to my grandmother who couldn't help the tears that filled her eyes and a slight smile on her face when she hugged me "Your right little one and it will never change". It's a comforting book about love between parents and yes even grandparents that passes on generation to generation.

This is one of my favorite children's books and will remain so. However I believe that sadly now we are becoming more and more politically correct and thats unfortunately effecting our children's books. Judge for yourself but remember that sometimes if you look to closely you lose the magic completely :)

5 out of 5 stars I love my mom.......2007-09-28

This book is has impacted me in such a way, and from such an early age, that it will resonate forever.
It is only a sad book if you don't know how to celebrate the life of a loved one. I think it's good for children to question the lessons of this book.

Book Description

Imagine a young boy who has never had a loving home. His only possesions are the old, torn clothes he carries in a paper bag. The only world he knows is one of isolation and fear. Although others had rescued this boy from his abusive alcoholic mother, his real hurt is just begining -- he has no place to call home. This is Dave Pelzer's long-awaited sequel to A Child Called "It". In The Lost Boy, he answers questions and reveals new adventures through the compelling story of his life as an adolescent. Now considered an F-Child (Foster Child), Dave is moved in and out of five different homes. He suffers shame and experiences resentment from those who feel that all foster kids are trouble and unworthy of being loved just because they are not part of a "real" family. Tears, laughter, devastation and hope create the journey of this little lost boy who searches desperately for just one thing -- the love of a family.

4 out of 5 stars so sad.......2007-10-09

I've read all of the books and this one I felt was not as exciting as the rest but if you plan on reading all of them then you must read this one. So if you do plan on it just read it, it's not that bad but it's not that good.

5 out of 5 stars The brave boy.......2007-05-25

I recommend this book because it is very interesting, and you do not want to put it down.In the book, I learned that I have a good life and that I should be thankful for everything I have after seeing what Dave has gone through in his life. I would read another book by this author because all of the books are sequels and at the end of each book you are left hanging and wondering what will happen next. These are some things about the The Lost Boy.

5 out of 5 stars Dave's story helped me during really tough times........2007-04-18

As a foster parent who accepted only one child at a time, I needed all the inspiration I could get. Dave's story not only inspired but also encouraged me. It is full of truths that make us aware of how blessed we are. Anyone who is interested in helping abused kids should read this book. With Great Mercy author.

4 out of 5 stars The story continues.......2007-04-14

Dave Pelzer gives a wonderfull account of his experiences of foster care in this sequel to A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive. In this book you begin to see the transition to a "normal" state of being, but it is not without it's problems.

5 out of 5 stars My Hat Goes Off To Dave Pelzer.......2007-04-06

1 out of 5 stars Soooo boring that I couldn't finish.......2007-10-16

I read a lot of books and always finish but this book was sooooo boring that I have given up. My current favorite is the "Glass Castle"

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-10-12

I am in the second chapter and already am very distracted by the horrible use of commas and dashes in her long, meaningless sentences. Nobody ever speaks or thinks like that. The characters are not likeable. What a tedious exercise. Forget it, I'm trashing it, specially after reading all the reviews.

1 out of 5 stars What an utter disappointment! .......2007-10-09

Rating should be NO stars!

I was quite enthused to read this book, having read some of the reviews. I have limited time and so I tend to pick books carefully. All I can say is "my bad!" This book was such a disappointment - the characters were pretentious, the plot often vapid, and there seemed to be a ton of loose ends at the conclusion of the book.

Plot spoiler!!!! The book's chronology covers September 11, 2001, and it handled the day and its sadness in such a haphazard manner. I worked downtown in NYC and was a mere 4 blocks away when the first tower fell - the description of the event and the impact on the characters was laughable. None of the characters were appealing, save for perhaps one (Annabel Thwaite, but mostly b/c she was not very involved with the other characters, but rather her work, which was noble - assisting problem foster children in the system).

This was a very slow read, and I actually threw the book in the garbage as soon as I finished. I do not often have such reactions to books, but again, this was a huge let-down, empty characters, feeble storyline, and pretentious prose, to boot.

Skip this one!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money.......2007-10-08

This book was an absolute bore. I cannot believe it was a critic's pick. I found the writing style and the characters to be so unbelievably tedious, I threw it in the trash after page 160. I couldn't even give it away with a straight face.

1 out of 5 stars Made myself mad that I wasted the time!.......2007-10-06

I kept reading, waiting for something to happen. I would sometimes stop and read a sentence out loud to my husband, who would patiently get out the dictionary! Got to a point that I was skimming paragraphs just so I could finish and be done with it! Don't think I've ever been mad at myself for wasting time reading!
