4 out of 5 stars Great for Older kids.......2005-08-04

I think this would be a highly useful book for parents of children 8 and older. There are activities for your child to do like rating their worry on a number scale that I felt were too abstract/advanced for my 4 year old. The general information about anxieties would be good for parents of children of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas For Desperate Parents.......2005-05-17

My 8 year old daughter has a lot of issues with anxiety. Fortunately it hasn't gotten to the point where it's extreme but we want to give her tools so that it doesn't get that way. I myself have had issues with anxiety my whole life so I'm sure much of the problems stem from hereditary.

That being said, I as an adult have learned many tools such as Yoga and meditation techniques which have been incredibly helpful. Still, these techniques have been hard for me to translate in a useful way for a child this young.

This book has given me and my wife many tools to help with our daughter's anxiety issues and I am learning a lot to use for myself as well.

It is written in a way that anyone can use it, you don't need to be a therapist. The approach to realistic thinking is very realistic to implement.

One suggestion I have for those wishing to implement relaxation techniques for their children is to also look into the wonderful materials by Lori Lite. Her CD's "Indigo Dreams", "Indigo Ocean Dreams" and "Indigo Teen Dreams" are produced with young children in mind as well as teenagers. They are guided meditations, affirmations, relaxation and visualization techniques that are suitable for kids (and my wife and I have done them also).

While the material in the book is certainly excellent, these CD's by Ms. Lite make it considerably easier for children to relate to. Plus they can be used to help your child sleep more soundly and can help them relax if they have bad dreams. They have very relaxing, healing music and wonderful narration that helps these wonderful stories gently lead children to a more peaceful state of mind and overall being.

The combination of the excellent book plus these CD's are wonderful tools to help you to help heal your anxious child.

After reading this, I gained more compassion for my child, and I was better equipped to handle his anxiousness.

5 out of 5 stars A very effective approach.......2003-05-01

The approach on this book brought almost inmediate results as I helped my son with certain anxieties. It was like magic! Very good tool. Thanks

4 out of 5 stars Finally step by step.......2002-12-13

This is a really super book. Normally, each time you pick
up a self-help book it is abstract, nothing concrete, no examples
or scenarios. This books really lays it all out. It gives you
practical examples, question and answers! My child is enjoying
the exercises as well.

Thank you.

Concerned about the patterns of anxious behavior exhibited by your child? From simple, specific phobias to general anxiety, these problems can start early and cause tremendous stress for families. Your Anxious Child presents a thoroughly mapped-out program called COPE to deal effectively with anxiety when it starts. While this is a multistep program for fairly complicated mental health issues, information is presented simply, broken down into smaller steps and specific actions. (Plenty of real-life stories provide context, too.) The first step in the program is teaching kids methods of self-comfort, ranging from meditation and prayer to easy breathing exercises and biofeedback. The second is developing plans to relieve anxiety, focusing on improved communication and problem-solving skills. Since each plan will need to be as unique as your child, only a few concrete examples are given; but the directions for creating individualized plans are straightforward. The third step could be the most important: persist! Anxiety problems aren't solved overnight. Lastly, evaluate the program's success. What can be changed to increase effectiveness? This book's clear-cut approach can help parents and children wade through the difficulties of anxious behavior to get positive and long-lasting results. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas and Information.......2005-05-17

I was reading this book at the same time as "Helping Your Anxious Child" by Sue Spence, Vanessa Cobham, Ann Wignall, and Ronald Rapee.

I quickly found myself preferring "Helping Your Anxious Child" to this one though this certainly had a lot of good information.

While this book certainly gave me a lot of insights into the nature of anxiety it seemed that some of the techniques would be much harder to implement than the approach of the other book.

Regarding relaxation techniques. This is approached in both books, but the best resource I have found for helping a young child learn relaxation techniques are the wonderful CD's by Lori Lite.

Her CD's "Indigo Dreams", "Indigo Ocean Dreams" and "Indigo Teen Dreams" are produced specifically with young children as well as teenagers in mind. They are guided meditations, affirmations, relaxation and visualization techniques that are truly suitable for kids and if you are in the same room as your kids you will benefit as well.

While the concepts contained in the above book are certainly excellent, these CD's by Ms.

Of course the material in this and the other book I mentioned are very important for dealing with the broad scope of anxiety and for knowing what tools may help. The CD's have provided an excellent and immediate safe haven for my own child as we work together on tackling the roots of her anxiety.

In fact my child was having some anxiety before school today and my wife drew a little picture of a spider and web (to represent Lori Lite's "affirmation web" which she learned from the CDs) and it helped my daughter to go to school and have a reminder throughout the day if ever she felt anxiety starting up.

2 out of 5 stars Hard for the non-psychology expert to understand........2001-11-30

I found the advice impractical in the home setting. I would not recommend this book for parents or teachers. Perhaps those in the clinical setting would find it helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2000-04-03

For parents and concerned friends and relatives of anxious children, Dr. Dacey and Dr. Fiore have co-authored the definitive guide for dealing with anxious children. As a parent, and now a grandparent, I highly recommend this informative, reassuring and inspiring book.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource.......2000-03-18

This text finally provides tools and strategies that I can, as a parent, become an expert at using. I just wish the publisher would print more of them at a quicker pace so that my friends could pick up copies. Great book! -ms

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide.......2000-03-01

Although there are many texts which address anxiety in children, I found this book to be far and away the best available. Dr. Dacey and Dr. Fiore provide an excellent framework for parents who want to help their children. It can be difficult for parents to deal with these complicated issues, but Fiore and Dacey make everything clear and to the point. With a Masters Degree in Public Health I have reviewed several modalities of care for anxious children. This one is simply the best. I highly recommend this book to all parents, especially those with anxious children.

Book Description

A smart, authoritative, and comforting source for expectant mothers and their loved ones

"An outstanding blend of practical information and humor. Dr. DiLeo provides a wealth of useful information in a style that ensures a productive relationship between patient and physician. This book should be required reading for any patient who desires a "low stress" pregnancy. Dr. DiLeo's insight on pregnancy is so valuable my plan is to recommend this superb contribution to the literature to all of my patients."
--Douglas M. Montgomery, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans

"A wonderful, must-read book. Dr. DiLeo possesses an extremely rare combination of medical expertise, along with the ability to write in an informative and entertaining style, adding strong doses of compassion and wit. I've read just about every pregnancy book available, and many make great bedtime reading (as the medical jargon and dry writing styles often put you right to sleep). This book will not only keep you awake, you will be compelled to read it from cover to cover while you celebrate the miracle of your pregnancy with your favorite book and doctor. Dr. DiLeo is a wonderful person, an excellent doctor, and a brilliant writer. If only he could deliver your baby too!"
--Jeanine Cox, publisher and cofounder, BabyZone.com

"As both a surgeon and first-time pregnant woman, I had the privilege of reading this book from both perspectives. Dr. DiLeo provides a guide that interweaves the parent with the obstetrician, the philosophy with the physiology, and the practical with the miraculous. This book is nothing less than a complete celebration of pregnancy and childbirth, but with all the facts. An entertaining read! True to its title, my anxiety as a prospective mother has been successfully tamed by the perspective Dr. DiLeo instills into even the serious complications that are a part of any thorough discussion of pregnancy. The surgeon in me applauds an important, informative book. The mother in me finds great comfort in the perspective provided, and the woman in me had great fun reading such a charming and funny book about such a serious subject."
--Elizabeth Kinsley, M.D., F.A.C.S.

"Dr. DiLeo's take on nutrition in pregnancy is right on. Finally, someone has decided to stop over-complicating the diet for normal pregnancy with ridiculous chapters on calorie counting that no one will follow. And finally, someone has decided to champion the role of nutrition and diet in complications unique to high-risk pregnancy. This is the pregnancy book that dietitians and nutritionists have been waiting for. And it's fun too. It's a book that's both delicious and nutritious."
--Diana Davis, L.D.N., R.D., licensed nutritionist, holistic Registered Dietitian, certified American Dietetic Association, national lecturer on nutrition and neuro-linguistics

As expectant parents--especially if you are first-timers--you know pregnancy is synonymous with anxiety. You and your partner require lots of hand-holding from your doctors, loved ones, and friends. Like a soothing cup of chamomile tea, a handy bedside reference, and your dream obstetrician all rolled into one, The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy is your source of must-have information, inspiration, and, of course, comfort, in the angst-ridden world of pregnancy.

Inspired by BabyZone.com, the number-one parenting website (more than a half million visitors a month)--and written by its obstetrical adviser, Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo --this friendly, fun, authoritative guide helps you separate fact from fiction, while calmly and rationally filling you in on common problems that may arise during pregnancy and how to deal with them.

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunate.......2007-10-07

This is the kind of book for only a small segment of the population. Unfortunately this physician only sees birth as an emergency. In the process, he legitimizes all medicalization of birth. Indeed, he has a captive audience, since femininity is challenged and he is the savior each time.

The irony is that the outcomes of all his interventions for the normal, healthy mother and baby pair are not looked at since it is all over for him after the delivery. Too bad he is not able to visit postpartum and see why the anxiety occurs predictably due to the birth experience for the mother and baby.

I would not recommend this book to the general population---only high risk mothers.

5 out of 5 stars This is the ONE AND ONLY pregnancy book.......2005-07-15

After having my first child and avoiding chapters that scared me half to death (and then being unprepared for pre-eclampsia and a placental abruption)I felt reassured reading this book. Dr. Dileo calmly explains everything in layman's terms and makes me feel that, even if I were to have complications with my next pregnancy, those complications can be managed with good prenatal care.

FOR THE DETRACTORS....I had considered home delivery with my first pregnancy. Had I done so, I would not be here today. I WAS one of those people who he speaks of that is doing fine one minute and hemorrhaging uncontrollably the next.

Oh...and I'm lucky enough to call him my ob/gyn. He's as great in person as he is in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book out there.......2005-06-28

After having an ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage we definitely qualify as anxious. This book covers all the things you wanted to know and then some. Dr. DiLeo conveys these things in a manner which all can understand and helps you to figure out when to worry and when to go with the flow. Some of the other books out there we bought (of course) and this is now THE book I'm recommending to all my friends who are trying to conceive or are pregnant. I think this book will even make my ob smile as he's probably already muttered something about how anxious can they get.
Great book - excellent information!

5 out of 5 stars Best Pregnancy Book I have Seen!!!!.......2004-10-08

I have read a couple pregnancy books and mostly they have caused unnecessary alarm and don't seem to touch on the questions and concerns that I have had.
This book COVERS EVERYTHING!! Every concern and worry that I have had has been addressed in a clear and percise manner. I had a m/c a little bit ago and there is an entire chapter about conceiving after a m/c.
His writing style is great and easy to follow and makes a VERY easy read while still providing exceptional factual information that has been very very helpful.
Some of the other reviews found his tone patronizing, however, I thought that it was the exact opposite. He talked to you like a good, very knowledgeble doctor that was caring and truly concered about his patients health and well-being.
I am very lucky that I have an OB that I really like and can makes the time to answer all of my questions, but after having a previous m/c I am constantly filled with worry over every little thing. Stuff that you can't call your doctor 12 times a day for, and this book was the solution. It has really helped to ease my mind and concentrate on my well-being instead of being consumed with worry.
I would recommend this to ANY pg women, especially one that has some additional concerns and worries.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for those that are really anxious.......2004-09-07

After losing a baby - I found myself at the top of the anxious parenting hill. Every little thing freaked me out. This book helped reassure me and also helped me learn more about what to really be worried about. Highly recommend it for those who are truly worried, but is probably not necessary for the normal pg woman.

Book Description

View the Table of Contents. Read the Preface.

"The book is more than a synthesis of existing scholarship. It is a compendium of ideas - some personal, mostly scholarly - about the experience of parenting in the United States since the beginning of the twentieth century. The book is imaginative and thought provoking."—History of Education Quarterly

"In what is his trademark style, Stearns creates an artful synthesis that is both revelatory and captivating. An at times unsettling analysis of parental angst, the book is replete with worthy insights for historians and contemporary parents alike."—The Journal of American History

"Anxiety is the hallmark of contemporary parenting. Today's parents are tormented by fears of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, child abductions, and juvenile drug and alcohol use. In perhaps his most timely and exciting book, Peter N. Stearns explains with wit and humane insight how modern mothers and fathers came to agonize incessantly about children's personality development, school performance, and psychological well-being."
—Steven Mintz, University of Houston

"Stearns . . . argues that over the course of the twentieth century, a kind of down-home, common-sense confidence in the basic sturdiness of children in general was replaced by an idea of the child as psychologically and socially vulnerable."
—Ruminator Review

"Stearns takes readers on tour through a wondrous variety of twentieth-century worries about children."
—American Historical Review

"Grounded in research, this study offers insights into such school-related developments as the rise of grade inflation, the growth of parental ambivalence toward the schools, and the influence of escapist entertainment on learning and social development."
—Education Week

"A strong, effective, and readable portrayal of how twentieth-century American parents have invested and over-invested in their children. In a fairly short compass, Stearns has demonstrated many of the things that historians have tended to belabor-the role of expertise, why despite their declining numbers, children have become so important socially, the new realm of consumption, how the anxiety about children has become a central matter in twentieth-century culture and even an identifier of American life. Stearns knows what is going on and that children are not a means to express other anxieties, but the very source of many of the anxieties we express."
—Paula S. Fass, University of California, Berkeley

"Stearns has put a lot of thought into this dense but elegantly argued and thoroughly researched volume, and it should become a classic in the study of American childhood."
— Publishers Weekly

"Stearns points to a number of contemporary phenomena, each of which he considers an expression of parental anxiety. Steans appears to be particularly sensitive to the upward mobility of kids' grades."
—The New York Review of Books

"It's a shame that many new parents may not have time to read Peter N. Stearn's Anxious Parents: A History of Modern Childrearing in America."
— The Atlantic Monthly

"Stearns is a prolific historian."
— The Chicago Tribune

"Recommended."
—CHOICE

"Engaging and well written."
—History

"(Stearns) has a keen appreciation of what really mattered to 20th-century Americans, in their families and beyond. Indeed, it is his easy command of all that was going on outside the home- and his profound grasp of the connectedness of those larger developments and their consequences for childreaing- that sets his study apart from other histories of the modern American family." —Journal of Social History

"The book is as useful to scholars as it is informative to the general public....beautifully written and thoroughly interesting."
—Metapsychology Online Book Reviews

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw a dramatic shift in the role of children in American society and families. No longer necessary for labor, children became economic liabilities and twentieth-century parents exhibited a new level of anxiety concerning the welfare of their children and their own ability to parent effectively. What caused this shift in the ways parenting and childhood were experienced and perceived? Why, at a time of relative ease and prosperity, do parents continue to grapple with uncertainty and with unreasonable expectations of both themselves and their children?

Peter N. Stearns explains this phenomenon by examining the new issues the twentieth century brought to bear on families. Surveying popular media, "expert" childrearing manuals, and newspapers and journals published throughout the century, Stearns shows how schooling, physical and emotional vulnerability, and the rise in influence of commercialism became primary concerns for parents. The result, Stearns shows, is that contemporary parents have come to believe that they are participating in a culture of neglect and diminishing standards. Anxious Parents: A Modern History of Childrearing in America shows the reasons for this belief through an historic examination of modern parenting.

1 out of 5 stars A clueless, angry ramble.......2006-05-07

An Amazon search finds over 100 books written by Mr. Stearns. When I first noted this, I wondered how it was possible for one man to be so productive. After reading this book, the answer is clear. Stearns book is less an academic work then it is one long ramble ramble. It makes no coherent argument, it simply flits from subject to subject. It makes factual claims, but does not back them up with footnotes -- instead, Stearns simply lists all the books he read before writing this one in the back, assuming you'll be able to find the source for whatever claims he's made in one of those. (Indeed, judging from the writing, the book hardly seems to have been edited at all.) And it does not remain objective, instead Stearns whines about the spoiled kids of today and the "dad as pal" mentality that allows parents to indulge them. This is the kind of stuff that belongs on the Rush Limbaugh show, not in a supposedly-academic text.

And while such half-finished work will undoubtedly waste the time of the reader, it has apparently done wonders for Mr. Stearn's career -- he's now Provost of his college, George Mason University.

5 out of 5 stars Child is Bother to the Man (and Woman).......2003-09-29

This is a brief and wonderful account of how American parents came to be so anxious that fretfulness often seems the predominant state in which we live. (The section called "I'm Bored" is worth the price alone.) It's also reassuring; contrary to the scare-mongering of experts and the media, the kids nowadays are all right. Everyone who has children ought to read this sensible and illuminating work; it's worth 100 times its weight in parenting advice books.

Being a parent of a current college student I took this book out on loan. While some of the advice is excellent, the attitude in this book reflects why American students know little about other cultures, foreign language, American history, art, etc. It is very directed to those whose goals are business fields. It is also aimed toward parents who have the earning capacity to place a child through 4 years of college with little financial aid.Such advice as finding an internship each summer of college is great. However, there is little admiration for those who just take a job to make ends meet. Never mind that many pay thousands (as some programs have you do) to get (oops buy) an internship. Instead of just joining a sorority everyone should lead.Become a lawyer? Forget it, become a paralegal first. But what about the time and money on the paralegal program? What about starting a family along the way? Graduate school - forget it, too much money. One wonders how the author attained his Ph.D. College is seen as one means to an end - money, and career. Knowledge? Only those who want to be business majors need apply.Leading us to know why many politicians can graduate from Ivy League Schools but still make major mistakes and alienate the rest of the world because they do not know their world or American history, let alone a foreign language.

5 out of 5 stars Daycare search relief.......2000-03-28

Being the typical anxious parent with worries about daycare upon my return to work, I found Ms. Ehrich's information about researching daycare centers to be an invaluable part of her book. It was really a stress reducer. There were many valuable insights in a well written, easy to understand book. Being a NJ resident, I saw an article about Ms. Ehrich in a local newspaper whereby it mentioned the anxiousparents.com website. It is well worth a viist there too. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to find stable, quality help with your daycare needs. It gave me the direction and confidence I needed, especially since I am a first time Mom.

5 out of 5 stars The Anxious Parents' Guide to Quality Childcare.......2000-02-24

I have read the book and am just embarking on my own search for quality childcare. I was surprised to read the review of another from NJ who said the book was not helpful for daycare situations. I am seeking a daycare center environment for my child and found the book invaluable. As this is my first, I am the anxious parent as described. Ms. Ehrich's book gave me the confidence and direction to channel my search in a productive and time-efficient way. The guidelines for daycare interviewing and selection focused me and gave me many things to investigate and interview for. Thank you Ms. Ehrich for this most valuable resource.

2 out of 5 stars Not for families searching for Daycare Centers.......2000-02-12

Unfortunately I found the book to be too slanted towards family home care or nannys - these are not viable options for everyone. I found there was no fair balance given to daycare centers. While the checklists/questions were comprehensive the author's overall condescending tone put a damper on the information presented. For anyone whose main alternative is a daycare center, this is not the book for you - save your money.

5 out of 5 stars I'm telling all my patients about it!.......1999-12-18

As an obstetrical nurse and working mom, I have both a personal and professional interest in childcare issues. Over the past ten years, I have read literally dozens of childcare help books. This book is by far the best - the most common sense, encouraging, informative and easy to use. It has a permanent place on my bookshelf - and I am telling all my patients about it too. If you are buying only one book on finding childcare, it should definitely be this one!
