Some people might think that it is impossible to create successful relationships immediately, but the Shyas' discuss the concepts that will allow you to do just that. Combining Eastern and Western philosophies, this book deserves a its devoted following and its high, customer ratings. The concepts in this book are timeless and infinitely valuable. I'd also suggest a separately produced, newly-released DVD that is complementary to this book and provides very specific techniques for applying these Shya insights: see the web site of www.tcap.us (the DVD is about building confidence, but it it much more than that).

Brilliant for Friendships and Work, As Well As Marriage!.......2007-08-22
How to Create A Magical Relationship is deceptively simple, yet brilliant. At first, I felt one of its major ideas--that seeing a behavioral pattern, without fixing it, is enough to complete it-- was too simple. Then I began to see how it applied to my own life in ways I couldn't have imagined.
An example: I decided a long time ago that my mother should have learned to speak my father's first language, Spanish. I was embarrassed that she couldn't speak it well, and thought that she should work harder to learn it. As a result, I decided that when I grew up, I would study languages. Well, I did, but because I learned in a very competitive way, I was overly-sensitive to criticism, and I frequently got burned out. I even destroyed a couple of friendships by insisting that bilingual friends divide languages equally- in other words, if I had a Korean friend, I wanted us to spend half of our time speaking Korean, even if the friend was fluent in English. If they didn't agree to this, I'd feel they were cheating me.
This book helped me to recognize that pattern and even see small ways I competed in my own marriage! I still study languages, and I have a great relationship with my husband, but when my competitive side shows up, I recognize it, and in the seeing, I am able to avoid it. As a result, I'm able to listen better, take correction, and have more fun. My marriage AND friendships AND my work life are easier, and yes, more magical.

A phenomenal and groundbreaking book! .......2007-06-01
This book is incredible and inspiring. The authors approach relationships (both to ourselves and to each other) from a very pragmatic angle. They put the onus of the relationship on the individual: "It takes two to fight and one to end the fight" is something that I really can see now. I recognize myself and my patterns of behavior in my relationships more clearly than ever before. For example, how my unexamined, mechanical behaviors can trigger unwanted reactions and patterns from other people (especially people who are close to me like my parents). I see how I can cause a chain reaction to occur and I now have the ability to either 'go there' or take a brand-new road. I don't have to be a victim anymore and can instead take 100% responsibility for my life. To the spiritual seeker, a book like this is a blessing!

Our field is full of books on how to fix almost anything psychological. Most numerous are those which offer help with relationship and marital difficulties, ranging from the bent, the battered to the broken. They are presented by a series of authors, from the highly qualified and experienced, to those whose degrees suggest questionable origins. Still others rehash (probably without awareness by the authors, unfamiliar with the literature and earlier work in this area dating back over the last 65 years) old ideas as new and creative. Fortunately, the book we explore today was produced by two highly experienced and knowledgeable psychologists with a full awareness of the history and research in the marital field.
The present work is a re-release of an earlier effort by the authors. It is not presented as a revised edition, though a check of the referenced works indicate updating. Since I was unfamiliar with the original work, it was not possible for me to indicate new material.
The topics and contents of the book are solid, easy to read, easy to follow and replete with good examples, exercises, and guidelines that will serve both the educated and average couples as well. The work is moderately priced, well within the reach of those with modest incomes. For those who wish an enriched approach, the authors suggest a series of videotaped materials and additional self help books.
The contents of the first three chapters describe the basis for forming a solid relationship( understanding, encouragement). In chapters 4-7 the focus is on the importance of honesty, openness, appropriate choices and the development of effective communication. These chapters are pretty much the heart of the book, with ample examples, exercises and guidance for developing skill in this area. Chapters 8 and 9 provide guidance in dealing with and resolving conflict. The final chapter provides instruction on maintaining the gains from solving marital dilemmas.
As with many of Impact Publishers works, this volume is especially valuable to therapists who assign motivated clients homework and activities which extend into the other 167 hours of the week, following therapy sessions.

This is a must-read for all couples in a committed relationship who'd like to build a stronger, more satisfying marriage. Carlson and Dinkmeyer teach very practical, highly motivating techniques for initiating positive changes that will encourage your mate to respond in a more honest and meaningful way. This book isn't about slick or quick ways to get your partner to behave differently toward you. It's about learning to accept responsibility for your own behavior and realizing you have a choice in the direction your relationship takes.
Of course, this means actually making conscious choices about setting and achieving wise marital goals, which the authors acknowledge is tough for most couples. After all, our society is not exactly saturated with great role models for healthy marriages. It's also difficult, when you're angry at your spouse, to pull back and remember that you created the relationship you have now -- and you've got the power to change it. The key, say Carlson and Dinkmeyer, lies in understanding that the skills for a good marriage are learned. So you can start unlearning worthless habits and begin practicing new, more effective, positive ways of relating to each other right now.
As a hands-on tutorial this book is clear, comfortably paced, and interesting. It's packed with exercises designed to demonstrate the importance of learning to take risks and avoid ruts in your marriage; to focus on strengths and successes, back up each other's resources, and develop the courage to be imperfect; and above all to seek creative ways of resolving conflict. Best of all, like physical exercise you can incorporate into your daily routine, TIME FOR A BETTER MARRIAGE makes it easy to put a wealth of practical tips to immediate use every day. Carlson and Dinkmeyer are keenly aware of the value of being able to approach big changes in small strides. They advocate no daunting shifts in attitude or behavior, just countless simple ways of creating a healthier environment for your marriage. Activities like a Daily Dialogue, Encouragement and Marriage Meetings, developing a Marriage Mission Statement, keeping a journal, and evaluating your feelings on various issues help promote self-esteem, understanding, and mutual support.
This is a very "feeling-oriented" book that focuses on the message of emotions as the energy that powers communication. As anyone who's gotten mired in marital miscommunication knows, when you waste that energy in vague or misleading exchanges with your partner, you sabotage intimacy. Bottom line, there's no way to completely divorce-proof a marriage. But before you conclude you've picked the wrong mate, consider rediscovering your present mate by changing the only person you can change -- yourself. As Carlson and Dinkmeyer point out, the distinction between successful and unsuccessful marriages isn't in the challenges encountered. It's the choices couples make in meeting or avoiding those challenges that make all the difference. This book inspires the confidence to choose perceptively for a lasting relationship.

The workbook is light-hearted yet packed with helpful hints, exercises and is easily integrated into any communication or marital enrichment seminar. Peterson's Guide called Make Summer Count: Programs & Camps for Teens & Kids appears to have superseded the old Peterson's publication entitled Summer Opportunities for Teens and Kids (which was voluminous, comprehensive, and extremely helpful, but seems to be no longer published). At best, Make Summer Count can be described as skimpy, with only a very few options for a given type of activity, and very little information about each option. One could get much more inforation with even a cursory on-line search. I feel that Make Summer Count is practically worthless, and I would strongly recommend that you save your money and not buy it. (Peterson's should revive its Summer Opportunities publication.)

Practical suggestions are given to therapists regarding how to integrate marriage enrichment into their practice and expand it to include pre-wedding marriage education, managed care, and outreach to couples in need. Among other new opportunities for these professionals are training couples to mentor and reach out to couples who want help and influencing the marriage climate through developing community marriage policies and changing laws and policies to support well-functioning marriages and families. A review of the research, philosophy, and process of marriage enrichment is also provided.
The authors believe that couples who adopt the marriage enrichment philosophy, who are involved in the ongoing practice of marriage enrichment, and who participate in marriage enrichment programs that meet their specific needs, will be better able to maximize their potential as individuals and as a married couple. Top Pick for Marriage Ministries.......2007-02-13
My husband and I needed "fresh oil" so to speak, to pour into our marriage ministry and this book hit the spot. It brought up the answer to our long question of " Why aren't we a ministy yet". This 10 session course enriched over 20 marriages and they are effectively ministering to people now. I look to use this book over and over again!

And with Dr. Donovans material married couples can strengthen their relationship no matter where they are, newly-weds on up. We have been married for 30 years, yet we learned new and beneficial things all through the 10 sessions. The way Dr. Donovan has written and formatted the Christ-centered material, it makes it very easy to understand and follow. All marriages take work, and I would highly recommend "Maximizing your Marriage" for any couple that is looking to improve their relationship with each other.

The Book shows excellent methods for couples to renew love.......1999-10-19
I had the privlege to attend an Adventures in Marrage given by Warren and his wife Mary. Methods in this book were used during the Marriage retreat. It was the most enlightning seminar I have ever attended, and the words that both Warren and Mary left with me will always stay with me. If ever anyone has the chance to hear them speak or read the book, take advantage of it. It will be time well spent. I would love to thank them both again for such a wonderful weekend in western NY.
