MENDELSOHN IS A MAVERICK, BUT DEAD ON CORRECT.......2007-09-29
Some of the most critical life-affecting decisions regarding your child occur while pregnant and during the first moments, months, and years of their lives--nutrition, breast feeding, vaccinations, etc. Too many parents blindly defer to their ObGyns & pediatricians, and are not truly informed about the choices they make. You can get the same tired establishment line about how thimerosal (mercury preservative in vaccines) doesn't cause Autism in children. But, why even inject one of the most toxic substances known to man into our children the first place?
Sure Mendelsohn is a maverick, but you owe it to yourself to know all sides of the issues regarding your children's health.
My wife's ObGyn lives a block away from us. I am a medical researcher. She dismissed my concerns and questions when my wife was pregnant, and adopted the "I'm the pro here and do what I tell you" attitude. We ignored here advice, and designed an nutritional and supplementation schedule based on scientific research.
Our baby was full-term and rated a perfect 10 on the Apgar rating at birth. Her child, born two months after ours, was born weeks premature, underweight, and very, very ill.
An M.D. isn't a license in omnipotence. You owe it to your baby to read this book to get "the other point of view."
A bit outdated........2007-09-02
I think the book was probibly great in 1984 when it was published. I was a bit disappointed about how outdated it was;it suggested giving a teaspoon of Whiskey for fever to an infant. I wish that the publication date was available to view before purchasing the book and if it was, to make it easier to find.
Times sure have changed in the last 23 years. The concepts are good but I think Dr. Mendelsohn needs to update the book and re-release it.
I'm sharing this with all the mothers I know!.......2007-07-03
I purchased this book for two reasons: 1.) I am a mother of two young children who has had bad experiences with a few pediatricians in our pediatric group, and 2.) I work in the mental health field and a lot of the research I do on autism references Dr. Mendeholsohn's book and his position on vaccines.
With my own children, I have often felt disappointed with my well baby visits and have left the doctors office feeling that my doctors didn't really hear what I was saying. This book is so empowering and gives parents the needed information that is not shared with us in most situations. This book has helped me to choose a better doctor for my children and makes me more confident in taking an active role in their health care decisions.
Also, anyone who questions administering vaccinations to their child should read this book. I am utterly shocked that more pediatricians do not share this research with parents! Because this was written in the early 80's, some of the information is slightly outdated but this does not damage the integrity of the book at all. I'm giving copies to all pregnant women I know as well as any other interested parent.
Bought this book in 1985 ...highly recommended reading!.......2007-06-11
I happened to be thinking about when I bought and read this book back in 1985 the year my daughter was born. I can't recall everything in this book this many years later, but I do remember the impact it had on me at the time, as I even wrote to Dr Mendelsohn to thank him for writing this highly informative as well as inspiring book. I was a first time mother and wanted to give my daughter the best start. I feel this book is one every new parent or every parent in general should read and pass along. He was a visionary in retrospect I would imagine, as I was just reading about the plight of parents with children that have autism and the vaccinations..this sparked my memory of this book and how I opted out of these vaccines..and am glad I did. I remember going to one "well baby" clinic when my child was a few months old and the nurse said to me" this is one of the healthiest babies I have ever seen"!!! and she has remained so. Her own friends throughout school always asked why she was hardly ever sick...well, read the book and pay attention to your instincts.
I had a homebirth with a midwife, breastfed until she was two yrs old, did not give her any food or cereal until 6 months, and then made all of her food homemade. I slept in bed with her from the moment she was born, and for the first few years. I did not allow pressure from others to vaccinate, especially with a childs immune system at infancy being so undeveloped. I took to heart the thought of anything that is introduced directly into the bloodstream as is most vaccinations, as opposed to the way we normally contract illnesses, through the mucous membranes. I see how to this day my own child at 22 is healthy and strong and has taken antibiotics maybe a few times in her life. When I was told she had a "slight" ear infection or redness..I would get into the car and crumble up the prescription for the antibiotic... and to this day they are overused.
The bottom line to me is that we should trust in nature and see that illness is not something we have to run to doctors for and get pumped up full of drugs, but to seek out less invasive ways to comfort and treat our children..like with herbs, homeopathics, or just plain rest and lots of loving care.
I see so many children that are sick alot today and are fed poorly, have had a lot of vaccinations, and antibiotics,, cold medicnes, etc..and are "ALWAYS" sick. Many of these children didn't even get the headstart of being breastfed with natures first line of defense for a childs immunities. Let's give this doctor the respect and praise he deserves in giving us this valuable information...and honesty. Not one person knows all there is to know, but we as parents do know our own children...and need to trust that birth, feeding, and the care and wellbeing of our children is a natural process, not one made in a laboratory.
A note: when I went to enroll my daughter in school they told me she could not attend without being vaccinated...so I went and got her at I think 4 yrs old, one shot of the then DPT, but asked to leave out the P pertusis part of it, due to controversies . After the one and only series of shots I found out that if I wrote a note to school saying" due to religious convictions I do not vaccinate my child" it was all I needed for her to continue on straight through high school without.
Proof is in the Pudding.......2007-03-14
This book has been my bible for raising healthy children for the past 18 years and it has never been wrong. None of my brood has been immunized and they are the healthiest kids at school. I birth them at home, even one breech, with ease. I nurse them until them they're toddlers at least and practice what is now called "attachment parenting" that is espoused in the book. It works well and seems so much more natural than what I see more traditional, doctor-led parents go through, much nonsense of which seems to be harmful to their kids instead of good.
I think this book is timeless and still is quite relevant, maybe even more so in our current culture of fear. Parental fear is quite compelling, sometimes leading us to make the wrong choices for our children, and this book helps to keep the fears in check.
Honoring the body's ability to heal itself without the need for drugs; shunning invasive unnecessary procedures like circumcision (none of my boys are circumcised and most of their friends aren't either), ear tubes and tonsillectomies; breastfeeding and putting off solid foods until later; letting fevers run their course naturally; even mostly avoiding hospitals and doctors including well child checkups; has worked so well for us that our kids are considered a phenomenon as am I who just birthed my latest at age 46 -- at home in water.
Read this book and heed its advice. This now-deceased doctor knew what he was talking about and his wisdom is timeless, drawing on medical common sense and trusting the body to heal itself in most circumstances. The book will save you unneeded trips to the hospital and doctor and also a LOT of worry.

Best book for Parents.......2007-10-04
This book is so great. I have used it alot. I think it has saved us from many unnecessary trips to the Dr. It has all the right answers and what to do for injuries or illnesses. It is now a standard baby shower gift from me.
Packed with useful information.......2007-08-10
I bought this book after reading several reviews and have been pleased with what I have read so far. There is so much information, which is a plus. I will more than likely only read certain pages when my child's health pertains to that particular subject. Would recommend as a sole source for a new parent.
If an "Instruction Manual" exists for kids, this is IT!.......2007-06-12
This book is an ESSENTIAL reference guide for all parents, grandparents and caregivers. A friend of mine who is a pediatrician recommended this book when I asked her what her favorite child care book was. It gives the straight nuts and bolts of every issue that could arise with your child, from colic to fevers to jellyfish stings(!)
The book has come through for me so many times when I have had questions - is this serious, should I call the doctor now or in the morning? What is that RASH? Why is my infant making that wierd noise? As someone else said in another review, it's tuly like having a pediatrician on speed-dial.
My only sticking point with recommending it is the advice on child rearing, which I believe should allow for more grey areas than the black and white answers Dr. Schmitt provides. I agreed with many of his points. His "How to Spoil a Child" bulleted list is hilarious, and spot on. Likewise his advice on how to curtail tantrums.
But there were a few things that we definitely did not see eye to eye on (ex: vegetables are NOT "overrated" in my opinion, and darnit my kid's gonna eat 'em!) Those of you who are fans of co-sleeping may not like his sleep advice. Another reviewer called these "cultural differences," and I agree the book does not really take them into account. Take this advice with a grain of salt and go with your gut.
But if your kid just vomited and then went back outside to play like he was fine, leaving you a little puzzled and panicked about what to do, this book is for you. And get a copy for the grandparents' house, too.
Great for the whole family.......2007-05-26
This is the best medical guide I found for my child. I use it for my husband and me too. Efficiently written, it gets to the point so you can find the information you need quickly, which is important when your child is sick. It is very thorough and has covered every topic I've needed.
A Must Have.......2007-05-21
I have brought 8 or 9 copies of this book and given them as gifts to new moms. They all have found the book useful, especially the first time breast feeding moms. The book was recommended to me when I had my daughter and it helped me so much. My daughter is now 3 and most recently with the allergy season upon us, I foud myself looking up the treatment and dosage for itchy and runny noses.

"Feeding is a metaphor for the parent/child relationship overall," says Ellyn Satter, author of How to Get Your Kid to Eat ... But Not Too Much. Satter stresses her "Golden Rule" of parenting: parents are responsible for what is presented to eat and the manner in which it is presented. Children are responsible for how much or even whether they eat. Early chapters describe basic feeding principals. Satter then stresses ways to develop and maintain normal eating patterns from birth through adolescence, and provides solid information (and information on "solids") to both empower and relieve all parents worried about how their child eats. Later sections focus on feeding problems, obesity, special needs children, and eating disorders. How to Get Your Kid to Eat ... But Not Too Much may be the most sensible and accessible book on childhood feeding on the market.
Book Description
Answering a multitude of questions—such as What should a parent do with a child who wants to snack continuously? How should parents deal with a young teen who has declared herself a vegetarian and refuses to eat any type of meat? Or What can parents do with a child who claims he doesn't like what's been prepared, only to turn around and eat it at his friend's house?—this guide explores the relationship between parents, children, and food in a warm, friendly, and supportive way.

How to Get You Kid to Eat...But Not Too Much: From Birth to Adolescence.......2007-03-16
I use this book in my practice to loan out to new mothers and also as a reference.
Great stress reliever for first time parents.......2007-01-09
We hear it all the time that most children are picky eaters and go through food jags. However, as often as we hear it, when your child does it there is still stress. First time parents have a difficult time dealing with the ups and downs of their child's food intake. This book is a great resource and provides some really practical advice on how to make mealtime less stressful for everyone. It is written by a registered dietitian with a good deal of experience counseling parents and children. I got this book during my child's second year, so the advice she gives on the younger years I did not utilize and skipped over. What she suggests does work, and I find I just don't get uptight about how much he's eating. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
No help for early toddler stage.......2006-12-02
This book doesn't help if you're struggling with a toddler too young to really communicate rationally with. The chapters go from introducing solids to babies under the age of one, to dealing with toddlers at least 2 years old. That crucial time between 12 months and 2 years is neglected and there is no help for picky eaters you can't negotiate with. You can't ask a 17 month old to "try one bite", or explain to him that if doesn't eat now, that's it, because after this it's bedtime. The book has a good point about parents deciding when and what to eat, and the child deciding if and how much he'll eat, but when you're dealing with a young toddler and communication is limited, and negotiations are impossible, the author falls short in giving helpful advice or even acknowledging that this is a difficult stage.
judgmental!.......2006-02-28
The advice in this book is solid and appropriate for most kids. However, the writer's attitude is judgmental. If you are buying this book, it's probably because your child's eating has not gone as smoothly as you'd like. For most of us, a lot of our parental self-esteem is wrapped up in this issue. So it just makes no sense to act as if it's usually the parent's fault - why alienate and beat up your target audience???? Plus, while I'm sure that some parents contribute to kids' eating issues, plenty of kids are just born more sensitive! If you can read between the lines and get to the take home message without letting her attitude get to you, more power to you - otherwise, go elsewhere.
Good for ending food-related conflicts.......2005-11-11
This book was recommended to me by our pediatrician when my then one-year-old son wasn't gaining weight rapidly enough. While his problem was not of the seriousness of failing to thrive, it was extremely stressful to my husband and I as first-time parents. And I learned the foundations for parent-child food conflicts can be laid well before the child can participate in a discussion.
I was not interested in having the rest of my life turned into a food battle ground, and this book helped permanently defuse any conflict. My parenting style is relaxed. My husband's style is old school. And my son is willful. Satter's recommendations worked for all of us.

Wonderful cookbook full of healthy recipes that really are tastey!.......2007-08-14
I have made many of the recipes in this book for my son who is now 1 year old and he has enjoyed them all. Most of the recipes are quite easy and not very time-consuming. There are many that are good for the whole family to enjoy. I love this book so much I am going to purchase a few others by this author.
Great Gift.......2007-08-09
I bought this for a friend who is expecting a baby and she loved it! She has a gluten intolerance so this cookbook will be very helpful for her and her husband. They loved it!
Great book!.......2007-05-09
I needed a baby food for dummies type book and this is one of a few I liked! Its very easy to use, has good explanations and so far seems to provide correct information with regards to foods to avoid, list of approved foods, etc. I like the charts that provide an at-a-glance for what is okay to feed, etc. Definitely worth the money!
Great ideas, but some are questionable .......2007-01-06
I love many of the meals in this book and they are generally easy to prepare (I love that many of them can be frozen), but I think some of the suggestions are questionable for small babies (for example a lot of tomatoes and onions). Otherwise, I love it and would suggest it to any moms interested in making homemade baby food.
Too meat intensive.......2006-11-09
We hastily bought this book for a friend and just as quickly returned it after taking a look at it's content. If you're still on the carnivor boat and wish to expose your child to the high dioxin and chemical load found in meat, then this book's for you. If you're a bit more informed and concerned about the contamination of meat, then look elsewhere for alternative nutrition and recipe info.
As a pharmacist, let me tell you that children are exceptionally sensitive to the chemical contamination that is in U.S. produced meat. This ain't the good ol' days and meat has changed. Be very careful where your animal products come from or consider eliminating them altogether.

Comment on Jaundice and breastfeeding.......2007-02-02
HI, I was just browsing through this book online and I came across the paragraph on jaundice and breastfeeding. This information was supremely inaccurate on this particular subject. The book says that breastfeeding makes jaundice worse and that you will have to stop nursing for your child to be cured of it. I am a very well read La Leche league member and breastfeeding is well known to reverse jaundice by helping your baby to excrete the bilirubin build up. The more often you nurse the faster your baby gets rid of the dead red blood cells. It is the best treatment for jaundice despite was this book says. Stopping brestfeeding during the crucial first weeks is dangerous for your baby's nutrition and immunity and bad for mom in terms of losing your milk supply and suffering engorgement or mastitis. Other than that topic I didn't read the rest of the book so it may otherwise be a good book.
FABULOUS book..........2007-01-17
We love this book. Except for the oysters (my kids just don't get into the texture), we follow everything on this book and our kids are SO MUCH healthier than their friends. They eat better at home AND they make healthier choices when they go to parties/events, as they are not used to so much sugar! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to help their kids improve their immunity through diet.
A Must-Read for Moms.......2007-01-06
I found two things to be most helpful about this book: 1) the information on the essential fatty acids that young children need in their diets from flax oil, evening primrose, cod liver oil, etc, especially if they have allergies; and 2) the specific doses of certain vitamins and minerals for each age group.
My son's allergies to milk and wheat are gone, in part, I believe because I introduced flaxseed oil into his diet nine months ago as result of reading this book. Flaxseed oil, I found is the easiest to incorporate into a young child's diet because it's readily available at health food stores and it doesn't have any taste. I generously poured it onto my son's oatmeal every morning and it provided a good source of fat for him and, in my opinion, played a role in eliminating his allergies. Evening primrose and cod liver oils were a little tougher to be consistent with, but if your child has severe allergies, it's a small price to pay for the potential positive outcome.
As for vitamins and minerals, Dr. Galland has specific recommendations for safe upper dosing levels for different age groups. (Who knew that a 2-3 year old can have up to 1000mg/day of vitamin C as long as his tummy will tolerate it?)
I also found the chapter on nutrition for pregnant and nursing moms to be really helpful (for example, too much of the mineral manganese in the mother's diet can be toxic to a nursing infant up to six weeks of age).
The main concern for me, however, had to do with Dr. Galland's recommendation for so much soy in children's diets. There has recently been much controversy over the safety of soy for kids because of the high amounts of isoflavones or naturally occuring plant-based estrogen. Babies on soy formula have been observed as young as three years old to go into puberty, it is believed, due to the estrogen in soy. [...] So I wonder if Dr. Galland were to write an updated or revised version of this book, if he would still recommend so much soy for children.
At any rate, the book is a brilliant reference point for moms and it's easy to pick and choose what is doable and helpful for your child and lifestyle. I consider it a valuable and insightful must-read for every mom. Thanks, Dr. Galland, for sharing your expertise on child nutrition. It's so refreshing to hear from nutritionally oriented MDs who don't resort to medication for every problem.
It's not that hard & a great book on eczema........2006-10-25
Why feed your kids something that actually depletes the nutrition you are trying so hard to give them [such as hydrogenated oils which prevent your child's body from absorbing other nutrients it needs]?
This book makes it clear what kid's need & what they don't need. I found the explanation of which vitamins/minerals can be too much - blocking absorption of other necessary nutrients - very helpful. Everyone I have turned on to the book has loved it!
Another thing I found helpful was the chapter on what to start feeding your 6 month - 1 yr. old. It lists what to start them on & what to hold off on & explains why. This is far more detailed than our pediatrician's information. The prenatal chapter is good as well & I wish I had this book when I was pregnant.
Especially easy & helpful is the information on which supplements are beneficail for your child's specific needs/problems like hyperactivey, yeast infections, eczema, cradle cap, fatigue, diabetes ect..
It's really not that hard. It's very basic nutritional information just well explained. It's really not difficult to feed your kids & yourself basic whole foods. Read the labels! You may quickly realize these are lifestyle changes that you want to make since it is so beneficial to your child's health & development of their brain, eyes, etc.
Great format & an easy read.
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE FOUND ON ECZEMA FOR CHILDREN OR ADULTS.
I also recommend:
Chemical-Free Kids: How to Safeguard Your Child's Diet and Environment by Allan Magaziner, Linda Bonvie, and Anthony Zolezzi
This book better explains the importance of organic foods among other things.
Another great format & an easy read.
Great book!.......2005-10-19
I agree with one reviewer who said that it is difficult to pull off. But, I will still give this one 5 Stars. First I never knew how much important EFAs are and this book explains that well. Second it talks about tackling EFA and other mineral defficiencies for kids of various ages starting from Prenatal(pregnancy). I love the format in which this was written. Very easy to refer. My three and a half yr old is a very picky eater. I might not make her eat all the healthy stuff thats said in the book. But I started rubbing FLAX oil onto her skin, and her eczema is getting better.
The book also tells you about anti-nutrients. I now think a little before giving junk food to my kid. Recipes sound good but I never tried them yet. Hopefully I will get my kid to eat atleast a few of those. Highly recomment to parents who worry why your kid gets sick more often and suffers more than all the rest of the neighbourhood kids.

Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.
Buy the updated version!.......2007-05-09
Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!
Well Written!.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.
Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.
Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.
Book Description
Cutting edge scientific research has shown that exposure to the right kind of environment during the first years of life actually affects the physical structure of a child's brain, vastly increasing the number of neuron branches--the "magic trees of the mind"--that help us to learn, think, and remember. At each stage of development, the brain's ability to gain new skills and process information is refined. As a leading researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, Marion Diamond has been a pioneer in this field of research. Now, Diamond and award-winning science writer Janet Hopson present a comprehensive enrichment program designed to help parents prepare their children for a lifetime of learning.

Great for Parents.......2007-01-08
I was assigned to read this book for a class on Child Development. It went along with many of the main ideas in the text book about the brain development and growth of a child's brain from infancy through adulthood. I work at a daycare and would pay for the parents to read this material. It really help you appreciate how fragile children are, and scientific explinations for the wonders that they achieve every day. The writer does talk a lot about herself and her personal journey making about 1/4 of the book an autobiography, and she seems to brag a bit which is a little annoying to be honest. But if you can get past that then I think it is worth reading for the information that she provides.
Magic Trees of the Mind : How to Nurture Your Child's Intelligence, Creativity, and Healthy Emotions from Birth Through Adolesce.......2006-12-11
This book is scientifically grounded and well presented to make it a fascinating read and easy to apply at any age.
My daughter was about 13 months old when we were vacationing in San Diego when a guest who had been observing us interacting by the poolside approached us and informed me I should considered this book. It turned out that the guest was a child pychologist and 'saw' tremendous potential in my child and went on to explained the power of nurturing and stimulating the young mind; particularly keying in on the 'window of opportunities' or knowing when the right timing for introducing particular stimulants at specific ages to enhance development of the mind. It has been 6 years ago since I purchased this book and I still make references to it!! It has been a tremendous "awareness" gift given to us from a complete stranger and this is why I felt compelled to write a review (even years later) and to share my enthusiasm! It is rewarding seeing my daughter thrive and so full of life and eager to learn. I am grateful I got my hands on this book early enough to make a difference in our lives.
Parts of the book provide medical explanations and supporting examples on how the brain's neuron, branching dendrites and synapses function and develop. Along with this, the author provides parent-recommeded enrichment tools to introduce at each particular age which has been an invaluable reference; keying in on when and what types of activities to undertake or books and games to support a childs learning.
I highly recommend this book as a vauable guide for those parents who sensibly want to nurture their child's growing mind.
For an understanding of the relationship between life experiences and brain development.......2006-06-30
As a child psychiatrist, I've recommended this book to area developmental specialists, teachers in early childhood education, and parents who have questions about understanding the relationship between brain development, behavioral and emotional development, and early life experiences.
It helps parents feel assured that negative experiences will not be destined to cause permanent adversity. It helps parents feel less guilty about "failing" to expose their child to Beethoven in utero. And it helps parents understand a bit about why early intervention for emotional, behavioral, and anxiety issues may be very protective.
Readers will come away from reading this book with a vivid picture of how the brain's neurologic connections are always dynamic--for example, if you sit in a room and practice piano for hours and hours, the areas of your brain responsible will become very dense and enriched. If you then stop practicing, that area will "prune" and become less enriched. Of course, early childhood is a time when the brain is more ready to learn many skills (language, for example) and the book explains this, too. But ultimately its message is that we can all explore and experience new things at any time--a very positive message!
I use some of the concepts presented in this book to educate parents about development, parenting, nurturance, and enrichment. I use some of the concepts to help others understand the impact of child abuse, and traumatic early experiences.
I haven't utilized the appendices that recommend specific books and toys for enrichment--I really believe in following a child in this regard, and so I make more personal recommendations to parents than a book can really do.
Nurture nature!.......2005-10-14
Half technical manual and half advice column, this book serves as an explaination as to how the brain develops, and how to best nuture that development. The book divides the human brain into "trees", each one branching out into different areas such as emotions, intelligence and creativity.
Included in the book are interviews with leading scientists as well as brain-enhancing activities from parents. The premise is that by learning how the brain develops you can best stimuate it's growth. This is an excellent book for all who care for children from infancy through middle school.
Absolutely a must have!!!!.......2005-05-03
I have been using this book since I was 3 months pregnant till today (my son is 10 months old). I find the information in this book very helpful to help me educate my son and help me learn about the different stages of development. This book is a great buy and useful reference book. Highly recommended.

worth the time.......2007-05-21
When I first received this book, I read the book quickly without taking the time to get a notebook and complete the daily exercises. When I finished the book, I grabbed a notebook and started back through each chapter. Hannah's advice hit right on target in many areas of my life. Hannah understands the chaos and emotions involved with motherhood. She offers avenues for mothers to take back control of their life. In a world where everyone is selling external fixes to problems, it's nice to read a book that focuses on the internal you.
Great ideas and tools........2007-05-14
This is a great book with great ideas. It really does work for a full-time working mother, as well as a stay at home working mom. Even if you only utilize a handful of her ideas it is worth it.
Book Description
It's in the news: American children are too fat and this is resulting in an alarming increase in type 2 "adult onset" diabetes in children under the age of 12. Dr. Naomi Neufeld recognized this more than two decades ago when she began seeing an increasing number of overweight children in her office as a pediatric endocrinologist - children who were not just 20 to 30 pounds overweight, but 50 to 100 pounds overweight and children who were as young as 6 years old.
The KidShape
© program she founded is a family-based weight-management program that has helped thousands of young people lose weight by learning how to make healthy choices about eating and activity. Included are "The truths behind the myths about food," "Seven lessons for fit families," fun exercises, and healthy recipes.

EXCELLENT book for facilitating a weight loss group for kids or a family!!!.......2007-05-12
I bought this for my dear sister and her husband who I lovingly call food "stupid" becaluse they can't seem to understand basic concepts of healthy food choices. THey are both thin but their son (12) is overweight due to emotional eating. THis book is very easy to read for any parent or adult who is wanting to educate a child or a group of kids.It offers step by step and DOABLE plan of action. I purchased the cookbook for ny nephew and he absolutely loves it and has been cooking from it -- at 12 years old! recipes are delicious!!
Book Description
Children don't grow up simply by adding inches and pounds-child development is a much richer mix of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. While children make progress at their own pace, parents can help (or, occasionally, hinder) them. Understanding the many ways in which your child grows is the essence of parenting, and if you appreciate the ebbs and flows of development, you can raise your child with more insight and confidence.
The Yale Child Study Center studies the life experiences of infants, children, and parents. The faculty-psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, and educators-provides the unique combination of a solid grounding in the science of child development, an understanding of a child's point of view, and an appreciation of parents' expectations and experiences.
Problems arise, of course, in every family's life. Dr. Mayes and Dr. Cohen's reassuring approach helps parents understand the nature of a problem, their role in it and response to it, and when and where to go for help with concerns such as learning disabilities, bullying, sibling rivalry, mental health and depression, anger and other difficult feelings, and divorce. This classic guide will be an incredible resource in every family bookshelf.

good reference.......2006-06-10
This book is good if you want a book that doesn't tell you how to parent, but rather helps you understand your baby/child. With the information in this book, you can make your own educated decisions on how to parent. It's very straightforward and it's easy to use it as a reference if you have a specific question.
If you're tired of books that tell you how you should be parenting but are interested rather in your child's development, this could be for you. It makes you think and is not a manual.
For example, in the sleep section, it doesn't tell you what to do, but rather the implications of different methods of helping your kid sleep and why your kid might be having trouble or falling into certain patterns (like maybe it's just part of development). This book really respects the parent-child relationship.
A wide-ranging, eminently readable reference.......2003-05-17
The collaboration of Linda C. Mayes (Arnold Gesell Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center) and Donald J. Cohen (Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center), The Yale Child Study Center Guide To Understanding Your Child: Healthy Development From Birth To Adolescence is a superbly practical and "reader friendly" guide for parents which compiles the findings and discoveries of the Yale Child Study Center (an organization first founded in 1911) in order to assisting men and women in finding their own parenting style, achieve balance between family and work duties, and acquire ways to strengthen the ties the bind their family relationships and deal with difficult issues arising from new siblings, to school bullies, to divorce and death. The Yale Child Study Center Guide To Understanding Your Child is confidently recommended as being a wide-ranging, eminently readable reference packed with solid information for parents and caretakers of children everywhere.
