"God, he was a smart kid..." So why did Christopher McCandless trade a bright future--a college education, material comfort, uncommon ability and charm--for death by starvation in an abandoned bus in the woods of Alaska? This is the question that Jon Krakauer's book tries to answer. While it doesn'tcannotanswer the question with certainty, Into the Wild does shed considerable light along the way. Not only about McCandless's "Alaskan odyssey," but also the forces that drive people to drop out of society and test themselves in other ways. Krakauer quotes Wallace Stegner's writing on a young man who similarly disappeared in the Utah desert in the 1930s: "At 18, in a dream, he saw himself ... wandering through the romantic waste places of the world. No man with any of the juices of boyhood in him has forgotten those dreams." Into the Wild shows that McCandless, while extreme, was hardly unique; the author makes the hermit into one of us, something McCandless himself could never pull off. By book's end, McCandless isn't merely a newspaper clipping, but a sympathetic, oddly magnetic personality. Whether he was "a courageous idealist, or a reckless idiot," you won't soon forget Christopher McCandless.
Book Description
In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter. How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild.
Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and , unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild.
Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life. Admitting an interst that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the dries and desires that propelled McCandless. Digging deeply, he takes an inherently compelling mystery and unravels the larger riddles it holds: the profound pull of the American wilderness on our imagination; the allure of high-risk activities to young men of a certain cast of mind; the complex, charged bond between fathers and sons.
When McCandless's innocent mistakes turn out to be irreversible and fatal, he becomes the stuff of tabloid headlines and is dismissed for his naiveté, pretensions, and hubris. He is said to have had a death wish but wanting to die is a very different thing from being compelled to look over the edge. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity , and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding--and not an ounce of sentimentality. Mesmerizing, heartbreaking, Into the Wild is a tour de force. The power and luminosity of Jon Krakauer's stoytelling blaze through every page.
Customer Reviews:
A magazine article made into a book.......2007-10-17
The author tries to extend a magazine article to book length by retelling the same story 4 or 5 times plus inserting chapters of related personal experiences. The story is good. Wish it was written in chronological order instead of in circles. Can't wait to see the movie. But overall, the book "A Walk In The Woods" is a better read for those with a passon for nature.
Bitter sweet.......2007-10-15
Into the wild is a book bordering on genius and insanity much like the people written so passionately in it's pages. The book is a great read for sure but whether or not it is a good thing is hard to say. I feel cheated. After seeing the preview for the movie I hoped for an inspirational book but after reading the cover I realized that wasn't going to be the case. It is written like an article and not a story. That made it feel more real and at the same time ruined the beautiful story with reality. Hopefully this book will deter people from tempting the fates to escape what they'll miss the most in the end.
A memorable book .......2007-10-14
Trips like that always tend to be instructive. The lesson that Chris apparently learned was that there was a reason why people had left the wild in the first place. Great book. I hear the movie is good too.
Harrowing account of a seemingly normal young man,.......2007-10-11
Excellent book about a fascinating, very intelligent, young man who decides to give up everything that he owns, and take off on an incredible journey, and how a few miscalculations did him in.
Beautifully written. The only time that I lost some interest in it was when Krakauer decided to put a detailed account of one of his expeditions into Alaska seemingly to fill pages.
Other than that, and excellent read
Life Changing Read.......2007-10-10
This book is an inspiring read. The letter to Mr. Franz is enough to move someone if not the whole book. Some people may think Chris was ignorant in trying to live in the Alaskan wilderness, and may have made some mistakes, but he did something he had been dreaming about, and I admire his rejection of society and living independently for 2 years. Yes, his wild adventure cost him his life, but I think he was happy in the end, and I think that's all that matters!
Book Description
To Persians, the fourteenth-century poems of Hafiz are not classical literature from a remote past, but cherished love, wisdom, and humor from a dear and intimate friend. Perhaps, more than any other Persian poet, it is Hafiz who most fully accesses the mystical, healing dimensions of poetry. Daniel Ladinsky has made it his life's work to create modern, inspired translations of the world's most profound spiritual poetry. Through Ladinsky's translations, Hafiz's voice comes alive across the centuries singing his message of love.
Customer Reviews:
Divine Hafiz.......2007-08-04
A lifelong fan (dare I say devoted?) to Hafiz and his many works, this book is a must have. Nothing compares to reading Hafiz in Persian, but this book comes very, very close. Hafiz is enlightening, spiritual, refreshing, and above all, very full of wisdom. His works are truly magical, especially considering after all these years, people are still compelled to his work and mystified by his writings. Classic.
Luminous soul food!.......2007-01-19
Hafiz is, together with Rumi, simply one of the greatest poets to have walked on this earth (in my opinion), and Ladinsky's translations bring them to English speakers in a way that we can easliy and deliciously assimilate. This book of enlightening poems will make your soul glow and shiver with delight, if only you let it...
Skip Ladinsky - read Hafiz.......2006-02-26
Once again, Ladinsky claims to be presenting English speaking readers with the work of the great Persian poet Hafiz, and once again, he hasn't felt the need to actually learn Persian or actually base these works on any previous translation of any poem by Hafiz. These are the poems that Ladinsky imagines Hafiz might have written had he been a twentieth century baby boomer Californian disciple of Meher Baba, instead of a 14th century Persian Sufi Muslim. Ladinsky believes (or claims to believe) that Hafiz told him these poems. If so, the afterlife hasn't done anything for the great poet's literary talent.
all you need is love..........2006-01-17
and this book to keep you in touch with your heart.
The beautiful words will take your mind on a sweet journey.
A MUST.......2006-01-15
Read Hafiz any where, any time, in any language.
Take a time to think about it deeply, again, again, and again.
You must try to understand it with your heart, not with your head!
I think no matter in which language is written or translated, Love has only one language.

Great book for birders.......2007-02-21
This is a great book for anyone interested in backyard birding, no matter what size your backyard may be. There are articles on how to attract, feed, and house different birds.
Fun.......2007-02-16
I like this book. I'm a new bird watcher. I've made some of the projects mentioned in this book and they work quite well.
Excellent book for bird-loving gardeners!.......2007-01-12
Numerous, easy to follow instructions on how to create wide variety of projects! Includes illustrations also. Must have for those that want to attract birds to their gardens without spending a fortune buying items ready-made. Would be a good resource for those wanting to learn how to make garden produces to sell also.
Projects for the Birder's Garden.......2006-11-28
The book arrived promptly and was a good bargain price. It had very good information on attracting and taking care of birds.
GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR LIBRARY - RECOMMEND HIGHLY.......2005-09-07
I have been a "birder" for over 45 years and a gardener (in a very sloppy, haphazard way) for just about as long. This is a wonderul work that fits well into my hobbies. It is simple, practical and a joy to work with. As another reviewer pointed out, the ideas put forth in this book actually work! I was also thrilled that most of these projects were ones that my four grandsons were more than able to help with and in doing so, actually taught them something. I happen to live in a rural area, infact, I live in the middle of the woods. Most of the projects in this book were non-intrusive and blended in well with the natural look that my wife and I strive for. Recommend you add this one to your library. Now if I can just train my nine barn cats......

Customer Reviews:
A brilliant begining!.......2007-10-10
This is an excellent begining to my absolute favorite series in the world. When I first got this book it was because I kept seeing ads for it, so I decided to get it just to keep the ads happy. I fell in love with the book, and back then I didn't know about its sequels. A couple years later I got the next five books in the series. I read them all. Now I own every book and have read the first series 3 or 4 times, the second series twice, and I am eagerly anticipating the next books to come. For people wondering "Hmmm... Should I buy this?" GET IT! It is a wonderful series and I encourage people to buy it. I won't summarize the book because I wouldn't be able to do it any credit. Besides plenty of other people have written descriptions of it. All I can say is that this book is worth the money, and that this is a book that I will cherish forever. I love this series!
P.S. - I know it says "A kid's review". Please don't pay attention to that, I'm not some 5-year old that thinks kitties are cute. And I don't think that many "kid's review" people are, so don't shoot this review down, just because of that title. I enjoy the books for what they are, not because their names are adorable and I want to hug them all because they're fluffy wittle kittens. (I would like to hug them though, and the names ROCK! They'd bite me for it though, oh well...)
A very Good start to a very good series.......2007-10-01
Any cat lover or animal lover should read this series! My favorite thing to do after school is to sit on my bed, my cat curled up next to me, and read a warriors book. This book is a great start, explaining everything and getting you set up for the rest of the series. I am currently reading the new prophecy book #2, Moonrise. If you are just starting the series, here's something you should know: you have to read the books in order! And DON'T read the backs or the character lists of books ahead of you! I made the mistake of looking at the character list of the new prophecy book #4 (Starlight?) when I was reading book #4 of the regular Series, Rising Storm, and saw something that you will find out in the 6th book, Darkest Hour. This is a very good start to a very good series!
Start of a series that will last you years........2007-08-31
This book takes the view of a cat, Rusty, as he is accepted into ThunderClan, a group of warrior cats. Two villans, one on the outside, one traitor in the clan. Suspenseful, shocking, and action are all over this book. Not only does it end with Firepaw (formerly Rusty, now a warrior apprentice) becoming a full warrior, it leaves you hanging with the dangerous deputy, Tigerclaw, watching intendly on young Fireheart and the evil Brokenstar banished, but plotting. It leaves you itching for the future books, and starts a series that will make you read nonstop.
Predictable, but Fun.......2007-08-28
If you picked up this book and read the summary and are expecting animals with magical powers, then look away. While `Warriors' are about wild cats living in clans, the names of the clans do not mean cats are water masters or wind mages. They are wild cats who live in clans, and that's about it. Nothing much special.
Rusty, a typical house pet, or `Kittypet', dreams about hunting and eating mice (a la Tag from `The Wild Road', etc), while Smudge, his cat friend, will eventually be neutered and spend his time lazing around (a common neuter myth). Rusty eventually walks into one of the Clan's Territory, Thunderclan, and runs into Graypaw. Soon enough, the two become friends and Rusty is sent to the leader of Thunderclan, Bluestar, who admits Rusty into the group due to the fact that the clan needed more warriors, and Rusty is now Firepaw. Him being at a clan with cats who despise Kittypets, Firepaw meets many challenges, especially when something sinister lurks in ambitious Tigerclaw. And the obvious-dark-clan-of-the-forest Shadowclan.
This book, while very, very predictable (no joke, a child will have this book figured out), was very interesting to read, and actually grips you to the end, even though Firepaw was a sugary sweet hero who seems to know what is going on while the others don't. Flaws, while small, affect the series as a whole. For one,
(-) Bluestar needs more warriors for her clan, yet is fine with the fact that only one cat joined her clan. Why not send scouts to recruit more Kittypets?
(-) The `Fire alone can save our clan' bit is obvious. We all know what this is referring to.
(-) The obvious characters who will nonetheless be bad (Longtail's dark pelt, Tigerclaw's dark pelt, Darkstripe's dark pelt and dark name; not to mention Shadowclan).
(-) The big one: inbreeding. If the clans were really big, that would be understandable, but these are wild cats...well, wild cats with human qualities and no, no wild cat will bunch up in a group like this, but this is a book. Even so, I notice that if you have such a little group of cats together like this, it won't be long until there would be some inbreeding going on, so isn't it kinda obvious that you need cats from different clans, and Kittypets, too, to prevent something like this happening?
These flaws aside, I'm sure `Warriors' will suit your needs, even though it's a predictable book. I liked it, nonetheless.
Pick it up and you can't put it down. You will love it. By a cat freak........2007-08-23
I won't say anything about the story (there are enough reviews already) except that it's about a kittypet (house cat) named Rusty that feels attracted to the wild forest. He eventually joins ThunderClan, one of 4 Clans, and becomes the apprentice Firepaw. Each book has its own great plot, and one big mystery that continues to fold out throughout the whole series. It's full of suspense, intrigue, mystery, action, friendship, grief, happiness, death, excitement (about... um... A LOT)... and of course cats! Each new book is better than the last. I have all of them except the New Prophecy (a runner-up series) #6 Sunset and the Power of Three (3rd runner-up) The Sight. Read them all. You'll be hooked. Then, after reading Warriors and at least some of The New Prophecy get Warriors Field Guide (contains spoilers!) and when you've finished Dawn (TNP #3) read the manga (The Lost Warrior). You'll become a HUGE fan. Oh, and a warning: if you buy a set or something with the first four, DO NOT, by any circumstances, read the fourth one without having the fifth one close by (I won't say why). MAKE SURE you have it ready. Oh and yes, I feel horrible that there's only 5 stars. This one should have, like, a bazillion. BUY ALL OF THEM! Warriors 4ever!

wild Rock.......2007-10-05
I hope they make a second book with these same charters. as this book is fun and action pack. has a great story line and tells what is realy going on. A must read book and Buy
Flowery Manga.......2007-05-21
Beautiful artwork works well with a happy plot that may even may you laugh with all its hilarity amidst the flowery romance.
Pleasing and Pleasureful.......2007-04-23
I'll pretty much reiterate what all the other reviewers have said first. This manga is undeniably and spectacularly cliched. You've got the masculine, capable seme and the extremely effeminate, emotional uke. There's never any plot twist that seems particularly daunting and every action is predictable. Even in moments that were supposed to be tense, I never had any doubt about how the story was going to end. And, come on. Leopard skin loincloths? It's laughable, to say the least.
And frankly, I don't care one bit.
I'll say it, I'm a sucker for flowery romance, which Wild Rock has a great amount of. It's the kind of love story that makes you all sigh-y and glowy for a day. And the art, it's nothing short of stunning.
Overall, even if the plot is cliched and predictable, it's made me happier than a lot of mangas I've read recently. I consider it worthwhile.
beautiful.......2007-03-23
Wonderful artwork.
Wonderful story. I actually enjoyed Rock Gaiden more than the featured story but....I do enjoy tragedy with my smut.
well, at least the art was good........2007-02-04
All I can say is that it is a good thing that my main interest in manga is the art. The art in this book is beautiful. The people and backgrounds are beautifully done, the frames flow well from one motion to the next. On the other hand the stories left me wanting. Maybe it's because this is a one shot deal, instead of a series, but there was not alot of character development. The stories were brief and didn't really hold my interest. So if your looking for beautiful art I recomend this book, but if your looking for an interesting story with deep characters go elsewhere. Wild Rock is worth buying, just not for its plot.

a guidebook for spiritual survival.......2007-09-23
When exploring the wilderness, it is vital to be prepared and carry the proper gear. Rabbi Comin's guide is a full backpack complete with trail maps, a soul directing compass, and just enough guiding to empower us to create and realize an intimate and personal adventure. I particularly appreciate the trek's preparation that conveys in succinct terms relevant Jewish resources that combines moral, spiritual, modern and environmental ideals so that we have the proper tools to traverse the untamed mountaintops (and cityscapes?) and find there nourishment for worn souls. Rabbi Comins is also an exceptional translator who reveals the essential vibrant aroma and intentions of the Hebrew terms for the English reader. This book is a significant addition to our Permaculture, Ecovillage Design and Jewish resource library.

Helpful on many levels.......2007-08-14
A Wild Faith is a highly inspiring yet extremely practical guide to connecting with Judaism through the wilderness. My husband and I just returned from a week of hiking in the Rockies and our trip was very much enhanced by practices such as 25-25-50 walking that Rabbi Comins outlines in this timely book. For anyone who is a fan of the outdoors, I highly recommend Rabbi Comins' lucid, good-humored, well-informed, and profound perspective on Judaism.
thoughtful and useful!.......2007-05-18
Rabbi Comins' book is both theologically stimulating and well grounded (pun intended). It is a great resource for making that essential link between Judaism and the natural world, between our prayer life and our outdoors experiences.
A New Look at an Ancient Faith.......2007-05-02
What a treasure! Rabbi Comins breathes fresh life into Jewish belief. A wonderful call to action.

A Passion for Protection.......2001-06-11
Bernie's earliest recollections of being fascinated by the sounds of nature set the stage for his discovery, in middle age, of his passion for documenting and protecting the environment. To make his avocation his vocation he had to create a whole new profession, and then sell the museums and zoos of the world on the concept -- but it is a testament to his genius and determination that he did just that.
His recordings are unequalled, and they speak loudest for his passion. However the stories here, which contrast the Rwandan jungle with his previous life, will make you understand when he says, "I feel much more comfortable and safe when I'm alone in a rainforest or a desert at night than I do when walking around the streets of Manhattan, Los Angeles or Paris in broad daylight, or enduring the pitfalls of academia or the business world."
Bernie is that rare creature, a man of genius and principle. In time he will become known as the Thoreau of his generation.
Paul Hawken is right--but how about one of the top **three**.......1998-11-12
Bernie Krause's albums have been an important part of our lives for nearly thirty years. We are so very pleased to learn that he is as facile in communicating with the written word as he is with sounds. When we were huddled in a little tent last year, 19,000 feet up Tibet's holiest mountain, we longed for something appropriate to read, while waiting for the snows to abate. Into A Wild Sanctuary would have been perfect. Now, stop reading this and go buy the book.

My little girl loves it!.......1997-12-02
My six year old daughter loves animals, especially wild ones. She has been fascinated with Alaska and with wolves for some time now, although (or perhaps because) we live in a large city. She wasn't initially attracted to this book because it isn't very beautiful, but she was captivated by the accounts of real wolves in their natural surroundings. There are many books that relate the nasty side of wolves, and there are some that attempt to undo the damage of the myths of fear; but to read about how wolves really live (and to acknowledge their mystery) is the best for my young wildlife lover.
