Lots of Information in an Easy to Read Book.......2007-08-27
As an Occupational Therapist I focus on the obstacles my students face in their everyday lives and particularly in school. Often my students have received a diagnosis of ADHD but actually present with symptoms that, in my opinion, are better represented by other disorders such as Aspergers and Central Auditory Processing Disorders. Dr. Kutscher's book emphasizes the co occurence of various disorders and confirms that a single diagnosis is the exception and not the norm in these complex students.
The book is packed with information that includes essential vocabulary and concepts, web sites, and reference to experts in research and treatment. While Dr. Kutscher jokes about how he may be oversimplifying concepts and brain function, he actually includes many key concepts that can greatly clarify the struggles of children in the syndrome mix. Some examples of the information presented in the book that, I believe, would enlighten teachers, pediatricians, parents, etc. include the following: the demoralizing result of receiving a zero on a school paper;the Connor's checklist;contextual clues and reading; phonological dysfunction and early signs of dyslexia;Fry's Instant Word List; establishing a hand dominence by 2; the 4 areas of communication;Theory of Mind; an adult using "child speak" to help a child develop social skills; social stories; using the child's special interests to engineer friendships; and sensory integration dysfunction. If the reader takes advantage of the suggestions in the Further Reading section then more in depth knowledge of subjects that are only touched upon in the book can be obtained.
Dr. Kutscher reminds us not to treat these complex children as typical because they are not. One can view them as having a wonderful uniqueness or as having a disability that needs to be accomodated for. I agree it is very important not to expect typical behaviors from these children. For them to become all that they can be and to have good self esteem, they need special consideration and help.I enjoy working with these children and I am often impressed by their uniqueness and gifts.
Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!.......2007-07-30
I want to know how the author knew my kid to a "T" without ever having met him! This book was amazing and tied together several of my son's challenges in ways that no one ever had before! Instead of dealing with each "diagnosis" in isolation, they were related to one another and the interactions - positive and negative - were examined. Just knowing why something that "should" work didn't - in such clear and reasonable language - takes SO MUCH of the stress off of us as parents, advocates and caregivers.
The language, terminology and humor made this a very accessible and comfortable read. The density of information made it a reasonable slow but very rewarding read. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any parent, teacher, grandparent, friend or cargiver of a child (or adult)with any of the neurodevelopmental disorders it covers. You'll most likely find out that the picture is more complex but definitely more manageable and less frustrating when all the variables are considered.
Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!

kids in the syndrome mix.......2007-05-13
I had first read this book at the library but it had so much helpful information that i decided i needed it in my home library as a reference guide to go back to-this book is one that any parent who has a child with emotional disorders should read.I have recommended it to my sons therapist/counselers/doctors/teachers and my own support group.

Great Book for Professionals.......2007-07-16
Thought this book was very indepth. The work pages for students and teachers seemed like great tools. This book needs to be on the shelf of every reading professional. It can help them explain and re-explain tests to parents and the student. The work pages are great for students of all differing abilities.
Very helpful.......2003-10-03
As a former special education teacher, I am sometimes too aware of little problems. I know my child's self-esteem is affected by this problem however, and this book is very helpful for being me to work with her at home, especially since teachers don't seem to think there is a problem. This book, along with "The Gift of Dyslexia" brought so much practical, usefel information. I took this book out from the library, and will buy it, to use for a longer duration at home.
Practical strategies for dyslexia.......2000-09-16
Ms. Stowe has managed to be both concise and thorough. This book is aimed primarily at teachers of students who have dyslexia, but parents will find it extremely helpful in understanding their child's (their own!) struggles with a confusing and frustrating condition. The interviews with adolescent and adult persons diagnosed with dyslexia bring the more academic aspects of the work to life, and help the reader to identify with the information in the other sections. Unlike those in some other books on the subject, the activities presented actually seem to be as they are described on the cover, "Practical." I especially liked the suggestions for teaching writing and making writing accessible to students on differing levels (word, sentence, paragraph) who might be working within the same group. I wish I'd had this book when my son was younger! I would recommend this book to principals and teachers, to parents of kids in school and parents who homeschool, and to youth and adults who grew up with any of the difficulties described.

valuable resource.......2006-03-09
As a guidance counselor, I am always interested in obtaining good resources to use and share with others. I have recommended this book to parents and teachers. It has a wealth of information about ADHD teens.
BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER!.......2003-10-26
This book talks to teachers. As a special educator with ADHD children of my own, Chris Dendy zeros in on understanding this neuro-biological difference. She writes in a clear and concise manner. This book is loaded with hands-on materials, excellent up-to-date information, and strategies to teach the compensatory skills to these students. Buy this book for your child's teacher and send one to the director of special services, too.
It's not just for teens..........2003-01-27
I'm 59 years old and have recently been diagnosed with ADD. I'm going back to college and requesting Section 504 accommodations. This book is so helpful. It has so much information and just plain great advice. Any one who has ADD and wants to know more about how they learn and what can help them learn more easily will benefit from this book.
Book Description
Divided into two sections, this resource provides solutions to common ADHD issues, such as behavior modification and medication control. The first section offers an overview of ADHD and helps clarify the common behaviors associated with it, while the second section provides one-page guides for specific problem areas both at home and in the classroom.
Customer Reviews:
a good starting place for teachers and parents.......2001-07-21
This book is divided into 2 sections. The first is devoted to a brief yet thorough overview of ADHD. It is particularly helpful in explaining WHY children with ADHD struggle with particular behaviors. It is very clear and informative. The second part is devoted to one page guides on dealing with particular problems areas at home or school, such as car rides, or wandering in the classroom. The front side of each page describes the characteristics a child will show in the situation, and the back side gives a list of practical strategies and suggestions to help the child be more successful in that situation. If you have been struggling with an ADHD child for a long time, you may find the suggestions too basic, but for those who are facing this struggle for the first time, it is a great starting point for your reference library.
Not terribly helpful........2000-12-03
I have a difficult 7-year-old son with ADHD. I didn't find this book to be very useful in managing him. It stresses rewards and punishments (such as time-out) which just don't work with my son. In fact, they make matters worse. A lot of the advice here is just plain common sense, such as giving clear rules, role playing, being consistent, supervising your child closely, explaining consequences, etc. The book also suggests that both parent and child sign a "Good Behavior Contract" to reinforce or eliminate a particular behavior, for which the child is rewarded if he keeps his promise. Perhaps this works for some children. My son is just not motivated by such things. One book that I found extremely helpful in changing my son's behavior was How to Talk So Kids Will Listen by Faber and Mazlish. I saw a very positive change in his behavior within days. That book was a life saver to me. He is more cooperative when I apply the principles from the How to Talk book. It's easy to read and easy to apply, and it's amazing that it works so well -- without rewards and punishments systems.

Book Description
From a respected pediatrician and author comes this accessible yet authoritative guide for parents who know or suspect that their child has a learning disability. In this book, parents get clear descriptions of the recognized learning disabilities. Dr. Feldman covers how LD assessments are conducted and what doctors learn from them.
Once parents are given the background on learning disorders, Dr. Feldman provides an up-to-date discussion on treatment, including the pros and cons of currently popular prescribed drugs. A child with special needs must be considered a part of the family dynamic, and merely knowing the facts, while it is the key to understanding your child, it isn't enough to help your child thrive. To this end,
Learning Disorders offers invaluable advice on how to help your child and family live with LD, day-to-day and for the promising future.
Topics discussed in this invaluable resource include: dyslexia and other reading problems; problems with writing, spelling, and math; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); autism; separation anxiety; and common phobias.
Customer Reviews:
A good effort with some misleading info.........2001-01-12
Why is an MD writing on learning disorders? Some inaccuracies Inoticed..autism is a neurological disorder, not a developmental disorder. And I question the statement "shyness and autism are sometimes confused". He never discusses motor delays as a reason for poor handwriting. Some useful information here, but much inaccurate information.
