Book Description

In the late 1980s, gangsta rap music emerged in urban America, giving voice to -- and making money for -- a social group widely considered to be in crisis: young, poor, black men. From its local origins, gangsta rap went on to flood the mainstream, generating enormous popularity and profits. Yet the highly charged lyrics, public battles, and hard, fast lifestyles that characterize the genre have incited the anger of many public figures and proponents of "family values." Constantly engaging questions of black identity and race relations, poverty and wealth, gangsta rap represents one of the most profound influences on pop culture in the last thirty years.

Focusing on the artists Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, the Geto Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur, Quinn explores the origins, development, and immense appeal of gangsta rap. Including detailed readings in urban geography, neoconservative politics, subcultural formations, black cultural debates, and music industry conditions, this book explains how and why this music genre emerged. In Nuthin'but a "G" Thang, Quinn argues that gangsta rap both reflected and reinforced the decline in black protest culture and the great rise in individualist and entrepreneurial thinking that took place in the U.S. after the 1970s. Uncovering gangsta rap's deep roots in black working-class expressive culture, she stresses the music's aesthetic pleasures and complexities that have often been ignored in critical accounts.

4 out of 5 stars Unintentionally Proves The Point.......2006-08-02

This encyclopaedic examination of "gangsta rap" culture states that the "movement" is a viable culture not only in the nation but within black society. I've been mistaken - I was convinced that the dumb spelling, childish slogans, ridiculous speech and obsession with obscenities was simply a marketing device. I now know that talking, writing and acting like semi-literate folks "normal". The author takes it further: It is to be admired and praised as simply another expression of black/street culture.

This "culture" reinforces every stereotype - uneducated, violent, obscene, criminal, lazy, irresponsible. The author asserts that gangsta rap genuinely describes the contemporary black experience for large numbers of folks. If so, the future is bleak indeed. We've all seen white & Latino kids trying to identify - rapping the words, dressing childishly, talking in that unintelligible shortcut speech accompanied by hilariously absurd hand gestures. Yet one knows it's an act. No one, especially black Americans, take them seriously. At any time they can re-enter modern society - lose the attitude, change to adult clothes adn speak normally. Those in the "gangsta" world may not have this option and that is sad. (The author would probably disagree.)

We get a tremendous amount of data supporting his thesis. Sadly, he may be correct. Gangsta rap dumbs down culture, offering a childish simplicity without complexity. Musicians cannot read, play or compose, entertainment is mindless, language is replaced with childish babble. "Western" values of education, thrift, hard work, morality, family and planning have been replaced by "street knowledge", living for the moment, criminal "heroes", gangs and an incredible ignorance of the modern world - from science to history to politics. It is a devestating indictment that is punctuated by the success of immigrants who adoped "Western" values and have flourished despite the many obstacles.

The question is not who can rap the baddest, has more street cred, sells more CDs, has better drugs or wears more bling. No, the question should be: Who will teach the children, heal the sick, fix the lights, repair the roads, deliver the mail, run the internet or produce BET? These basic societal functions are, of course, the ones that require so-called "Western" values. If we all lived the way the "heroes" do, where would we be then? No one in their right mind would choose this lifestyle for their child or family - it's a cultural death wish. This is an uneasy book, one that disturbs and leaves one depressed for the future.

1 out of 5 stars I am reminded of a certain infamous quote..........2006-03-01

After perusing this book at the local library, with its sympathetic eye to the prolifetation and glorification of hip-hop as a viable "culture", I can't help but think of something Hermann Goering once said: "Whenever I hear the word 'culture', I reach for my revolver". Decadent, apologetic propoganda in its worst form, disguised as credible academics, truly pathetic.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting interdisciplinary study.......2005-10-15

The author explores the genesis and maturation of Los Angeles-based gangsta music and culture during the post-Civil Rights era. She ties the genesis of gangsta to the time when the U.S. manufacturing economy shifted to a service based economy, urban areas were neglected and the neoconservative policies of the Reagan/Bush era redistributed the nation's wealth to a small group at the top. Theoretically this wealth would then "trickle down" and I suppose it did, though in the form of low paying, dead end service jobs for those who used to be skilled and semiskilled laborers. Her study ends in 1996, where the centrist policies of the Clinton administration did little to ameliorate the problems of which gangstas rap, and classic gangsta artists are mellowing. (And not coincidentally, the year Tupac Shakur, a child of Black Power parents, died in a drive-by shooting.)

The generation of young black men coming of age in places like Compton during this time saw only social immobility in the Land of Opportunity, so they created their own opportunities on their own terms. The irony, as she points out, is that gangsta is both a commentary on and child of the rampant free-market 1980's and `90s: ruthless, exploitative, unabashedly commercial, individualistic, hustling. (So is it really any surprise that here in the 21st century, Lee Iacocca gets jiggy with Snoop Dog for Chrysler commercials?)

This is an interesting interdisciplinary study of gangsta's texts and contexts, its academic commentators and its diverse opponents. While neither defending nor dismissing gangsta as the latest incarnation of the minstrel show stereotypes (like Stanley Crouch and others ) she demonstrates that it is rife with black archetypes which participate in some very old expressive repertoires. And she looks forward beyond 1996 by mentioning "Barbershop" in which Ice Cube's character has learned the value of community and non-materialism.

Those unfamiliar with the jargon of cultural studies might find themselves confused on occasion (I admit I did) but will also find that things clarify themselves with further reading. I recommend this for anyone interested in African American music and cultural studies.

Book Description

Hip-hop megastar Snoop Dogg and award-winning playwright David E. Talbert join forces to bring you the unforgettable saga of an aspiring young rapper who finds himself at several crossroads at once, where everything, including himself, is about to suddenly change.

The year is 1989, Long Beach, California. When Ulysses Jeffries's mother decides to move her family from the drug-infested East Side to what she believes is safer North Long Beach, Ulysses and his little brother Bing are hurled into a world like none they've experienced before. Instead of moving on up, they've just moved on over.

From a classically trained piano-playing gangster named Buddha, to the next-door neighbor, a foster mother turned basehead named Crazy Betty, to Uncle Mike, a freeloading relative who has a knack for showing up when times are good and a knack for leaving just before they turn bad -- these characters and more take you on a journey like never before. With growing conflicts in the streets, and at home with his mother, Bing, and his mother's new live-in boyfriend Harvey, Ulysses is forced to make decisions that will forever alter his life. It's clear that his only chance of survival is through close friends, family, and the music he loves.

Love Don't Live Here No More is the first in a drama-filled series of novels called Doggy Tales that takes readers from the unforgiving streets of Long Beach to the bright lights of show business. The novel also comes with an original single that provides the backdrop to this compelling tale.

3 out of 5 stars Doggy Dog World.......2007-07-15

This book was a quick read, you learn about Ulysses's life living poor with his mother and borther in Long Beach, California. Ulysses looks up to a local pusher and starts selling drugs at and young age. He watches his mother struggle just to get by, He wants to help but don't know how, he has dream of being a rapper but must first learn how to survive. This is Vol. 1 of the Doggy Tales so I must know what will be next.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Page Turner.......2007-06-12

This book was definitely not what i expected. The only thing that kept my attention was the ending cliffhanger. It was a slow read that was a coming of age story. I was not connected to the characters in any way really which was a downside to my reading this book. I may read the second installment of this series but I am not going to rush to buy it. It was an okay read, not anything special. I definitely commend Snoop for starting to co-write books. However, 50's G-Unit books are much better thus far, I would read them 1st before the Doggy Tales' installments.

5 out of 5 stars Love Don't Live Here No More.......2007-03-11

i bought this book not too long ago. it is deffinately an easy read. it is modeled after snoops life. cant wait for the second. :)

4 out of 5 stars Keep moving.......2007-01-02

The book is quite interesting and quick reading. I wonder if the youth of the hip-hop generation will read the book and wonder if this the route they really want to go. There will always be struggles in life which is displayed in the story but it is what you do about it. Do you move in a positive mode or let the situation keep you down and move in negative mode?
I am looking forward to reading more by Snoop Dogg& David E. Talbert.

3 out of 5 stars WHOSE STORY IS IT?.......2006-12-21

I purchased this book three days ago. This story is the story of a single mother that is struggling to raise her sons. This is the typical untrue saying of women cant raise men. One of her sons goes against the grain. Reading this made me wonder if this simply Calvin Brodas biography.

5 out of 5 stars practical and straightforward.......2004-12-15

An amazing book! If anyone wants the real deal on Islam, and doesn't have time to wade through all the mumbo jumbo and politics that many books confuse Islam with, then this is the book you need to read. It's a simple read, and it's loaded with all the basics that you need in a metaphorical, yet practical and straighforward way.

4 out of 5 stars Not What You'd Expect.......2002-06-22

If you are expecting the wild polemics of the former H. Rap Brown, this isn't it. The "revolution" Jamil El-Amin is referring to is the revolution within oneself and the means in with the teachings of the Islamic faith and the Koran could cause a person to reform oneself. Even if you are not a Musim, it's interesting reading as a change-of-pace,

4 out of 5 stars Learn about the real Jamil.......2001-05-15

This book gives us a look at the current views of Jamil al-Amin. Geared toward muslims, it's a guidebook to the major tenets of Islam from an African-American perspective. It's a good introduction both to Islam and to the current views of the unjustly-incarcerated Muslim leader.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the real "nuts & bolts" of what Islam is........1998-05-12

A very well written book that explains exactly what Islam is really all about, and how it was intended to be practiced. If you are looking for a lot of rhetoric or race bashing, this is not the book for you. If you are looking to read something that accurately explains the religion of Islam, I highly recommend this book.

    Book Description

Therapists are always willing to write and talk about cases, but somewhat reluctant to expose themselves and their experiences. In this book, however, sixty psychotherapists of various backgrounds, disciplines, and levels of experience talk openly about themselves and their work. Divided into four main areas - Practice, Theory, Personal Experiences, and the State of the Field - the book covers such subjects as fees, schedules, cancellations, medication, termination, the effects of managed care, supervision, attitudes toward patients, and questions about unethical colleagues, to name a few. Every therapist is curious about what other professionals do, feel, and believe. Patients also want to know what their therapists think and feel when working with them, and what it's like to be a psychotherapist. Both kinds of readers will find answers here.

5 out of 5 stars Although a secret, Shrink Rap rivals DSM in usefulness.......1997-11-27

The DSM IV is widely heralded as the bible of the Psych world due to it's comprehensiveness of diagnosing. Shrink rap has the potential of gaining this status with regard to psychotherapy, but for different reasons. It is comprehensive in that it gives young psych. majors insight as to how the old pros handle situations. Editor Kassan interviews 60 practicing Psychotherapist with regard to their most intimate trade secrets. They include their first cases, how they handle the boring patient, the seductive patient, and where they see they field going next. Like moving from college Professor to Professor we see how one person's answer differs from another. The book is user friendly with different font and indentations for questions and answers, a percentage breakdown of how therapists answered and a table of contents which groups areas of similarity. At the very least, it is an examination of how thinkers think. Troy Turner New Jersey Psych. Master's Program

5 out of 5 stars Great Monolog Material for Adolescents.......2005-07-07

Although the subtitle is "thirteen lives in search of the twelfth grade", I have found that middle school students connect with the monologs remarkably well. One of my students' favorites is Pat, who is running for senior president on a platform to ban high school, hair spray (destroys the ozone layer), and animal experimentation (in mascara products), to name a few. She fearlessly passes out flyers to the audience and expounds on women's rights as she delivers her campaign speech. Another favorite is Betty Jean, who has just run away from home and imagines listening to T.V.news flashes of her parents' frantic search for her and visualizes her picture splattered on milk cartons across the country. She calls home hoping to find her mom a nervous wreck, but finds Mom calmly fixing dinner. Still, to save her mom's sanity, she decides to return home in time for dinner and Mom's apple pie.
This script is well worth having in your library of scripts, if you work with teenage performers.

1 out of 5 stars The Downfall Of Western Civilization........2005-08-01

Well, maybe that's taking it a little far, but I think you catch my drift.

Ah, 1999. I was coming of age, preparing to graduate eighth grade that coming June and to start high school. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was ABC's cash cow, the no-talent neanderthal Fred Durst was still popular, and, of course, millions of giggly kids tuned in to a popular MTV show called "Total Request Live". The premise of the show would be to allow the aforementioned giggly kids to vote for a certain music video, and try to get it to the coveted #1 spot. Sounds good, right? Well... the videos were mostly of the brainless pop genre. The clientele were mostly over-excitable pre-teen girls. And the host, Carson "Carsick" Daly, was about as exciting and interesting as a sack of wet diapers.

Did I watch? Okay, you got me, I'll admit I watched on occasion, hoping that the Beastie Boys, Korn, or Limp Bizkit would be on (I was 13 too... I still kinda like the Beasties though, and Korn's "Word Up" is cool). Even in retrospect, it wasn't that cool. I remember one time they literally showed about seven seconds of "Intergalactic". It then cut to Carsick, prompting me to yell to the TV, "I HATE YOU CARSON!" I never watched another god-forsaken TRL episode, and my brain cells still thank me for that to this very day!

But the real problem lay in the usual TRL fare. Most of it, as you all probably know, consisted of boy bands and pop tarts getting tons of airtime, and, of course, the less-than-intellegent kids on the street, screaming their lungs out just because "OMGOMGOMG!!! IT'S CARSON!!!!! I'M GONNA BE ON TV FOR TWO SECONDS!!! EEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" Lest we forget the geniuses paraded on camera during the actual videos' run. "OH MY GOD, okay, like I wanna like request the BACKSTREET BOYS because they are like SOOO CUUUUUUUTEEEE!! EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" Oh yeah, and the e-mails scrolled across the bottom of the screen. "OMGO)MMGOMG, lyk,i wanna reqwezt nsync bcz justin ais lyk ssoooo HAWTT!!!! - Buffy, 14" Talk about lowest common denominator... (Hey, you wanna hear something funny? I heard some moron from my high school was crying because she couldn't get on the show! HAHAHA! Sad or what?)

Sure, there was an option to request your OWN video, but I don't think one vote for Pantera would make it because it would simply get lost in a sea of the votes of shrieking tweens for their fluffy pop "muzik".

I think this stupid show is still on, but thankfully it's no longer popular. Even Carsick was smart enough to jump ship! Yes, folks, this was surely a very low point of an already dismal period (1999-2001ish). But thankfully, we can pretty much put this one behind us.

All the former teenyboppers who love Carson can now bombadeer me with unhelpful votes. Thanks for reading my wacky diatribe.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2000-12-04

TRL makes you feel like you're right there on the set with Carson. Makes you realize how cool and smart (but totally normal) everyone on the show is. It all looks so easy, but this book made me realize how much work goes into TRL, but also how much fun they have making it.
