5 out of 5 stars Only Swick's Book Is Better........2006-12-23

This book has everything from parent involvement to parent teacher conferencing to the very best history of parent education/involvement that I have EVER seen.

If you can't find any book by Kevin Swick, then get this one. Heck! Get 'em both! You can never do with enough ways to get parents involved with children during the early years.

4 out of 5 stars A great step toward solid partnerships!.......2005-03-04

This book is comprehensive and easy to follow. It is useful for understanding the various perspectives of both teachers and families. I think it is essential for new teachers, as well as those who may feel the need to prioritize and start putting families and communication first!

Book Description

The SLOB Sisters are back after the phenomenal success of Sidetracked Home Executives (750,000 paperback copies sold), with a new program for organizing your home and personal life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Read GYAT before SHE if you buy both books!.......2007-09-30

I bought Sidetracked Home Executive in 1983 and I did the program. It worked for me as a mother of two young boys. I bought SHE as a gift for a newly-wed friend and "Get Your Act Together" for me. I read the book and laughed and cried as I related to the sisters stories and tricks and tips for those of us who are born disorganized. I like the new format for the card system. I can't wait to set up my box for my new stage in life--empty nest. If you buy both books life I did--read the GYAT book first. This will save you a lot to time when you do your card system. Read the SHE book second and laugh with these two crazy sisters.

another great book by the slob sisters! highly recommend to anyone who struggles with organization!

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book!.......2007-02-14

No, kidding. This book changed my life. I am chronically disorganized and although I still hate organizing and housework, I now find it bearable because I have a weekly plan and daily routine. I follow the plan in the book in a loose and flexible way and still manage to stay basically on track. I like the fact that you can structure it to meet your individual needs. I've read many organizing books and have come to the conclusion that there are three basic areas to organize: your time, your "stuff" (like your home and paperwork) and your money. This book does a great job tackling time management with it's index card system, daily routines and weekly plans. It also makes decluttering a priority and 1st step towards true peace of mind and order in your life. For me it has taken three favorite books and almost 2 years to get on track. I love The Organizing Sourcebook for organizing "stuff". It's very thorough and also has a step-by-step plan for decluttering your home and getting it organized. Sink Reflections (the Fly Lady book) is great for both time management and organizing and decluttering your things. I use the basic plan in Get Your Act Together and embellish it with Sink Reflections routines and lists. I found the lists and routines in Sink Reflections to be more thorough and applicable to my life, but that's not to say that Get Your Act Together won't be perfect as it is for someone else. I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to get organized and stay that way!

2 out of 5 stars A little outdated and out there........2007-01-10

Was very pleased with quality of book and service to get to me. Great timing to my house! Love ordering books with Amazon. After reading the book, I realized that it has some good ideas, but there is a lot of cooky stuff too. First time invented philosophies of sort of alter egos to confront. A little too strange for my taste. But some really good organizational ideas. Thanks.

These are actually repeat purchases I have followed Pam & Peggy's philosophy for many years and now do some consulting and wanted a spare book to be able to lend out without risking loosing my original. Great tool to have a peaceful home.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-10-13

The book is full of inspiration and is very pleasing to the eye.
The book can be looked at many times over and I'll get a new idea almost every time. I am enjoying this purchase and...now that Ms. Seymour is on Dancing With The Stars, she has shown us yet another facet of her artistic abilities!

3 out of 5 stars On middle ground.......2007-08-22

Not incredibly helpful, but not crappy either. Just in middle ground. I didn't really see much that I would want to copy from her home, she spent too much time making "tablescapes". I am a busy Mom with four kids and need something practical, I can't keep changing every little table around every month nor could I go all out in my entertaining guests.

It did help me gain confidence in my own ability just because I know that my style will fit me much better than Jane's fits me and that I do have a style somewhere because I know that her style isn't it. So I will quite trying to find my style in someone else's book and just try my best on my own. I may end up with a textbook or something on Interior Decorating to help with arranging pictures, though.

The book is pretty, but I think it will be donated elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Making your self at home.......2007-07-28

I thought the book was beautiful and the photography was awesome. But I thought it would be a how to. Instead of a biography of Jane Seymore's house. If that was what I was looking for it would have been 10 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good Ideas To Have.......2007-07-05

Easily read; and, very understandable. A good reference book for the inexperienced interior decorator. I like the idea of 'making it your own home' instead of the latest fads and fashions.

    5 out of 5 stars tablescapes.......2007-06-13

Jane has coined the word tablescapes to illustrate how to display things when decorating your home. I have been having a great time making ones of my own to aliven my home. When I started looking for things like what Jane suggested I found I have a lot of things that work. I reccomend this book to everyone. I believe trying the ideas she offers will work for anyone and will surprise you on how easy it is and how much better your home looks.

5 out of 5 stars Green has never looked so stylish!.......2007-07-26

This book is a great way to get you thinking of ways to celebrate responsibly without sacrificing style! As a children's event planner I am always looking for ways to celebrate and yet preserve our precious environment so the parties can continue for generations to come. Danny brings a new perspective to the concepts of reduce, recycle and reuse. I am excited at the many concepts that can be adapted or just plain copied to create many chic parties to come. Even if your faorite color is pink, with this book you can still go green.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing little book........2006-07-15

I saw this guy on the Today Show and he was very captivating and creative. His book is the same way, with pretty cool ideas on how to make gatherings unique using "green" products. It makes a great gift, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift! .......2006-06-15

I just received this book today and was so impressed by its presentation and great ideas. The size of the book is somewhere between a paperback book and a coffee table book so it's perfect to carry with you as well as a great little gift to give. I'm planning on buying more so I can give them out as housewarming gifts. The ideas are fresh and innovative and keeping in mind with being eco friendly. Highly recommend getting it! And will wait to get the follow up book, Simply Green Giving.

    Book Description

Busy as we are, mothers understand that childhood is a precious moment with limited opportunities to spend heartfelt time with our children. For generations, mothers have created their own family memories -- and keepsakes -- by sitting down with their daughters and making beautiful things for the home. Constructing a dollhouse, stitching a family quilt, painting a kitchen chair, baking sweet rolls, sewing the eyes on a nubby brown teddy bear -- at the end of the day, the hours spent together making these things are the ones we will best remember.

In Mothers and Daughters at Home, the talented writer and designer Charlotte Lyons examines and embraces the intimate personal style a mother shares with her daughter. Featuring 35 wonderful and easy-to-do projects -- from doll making, quilting, decoupage, and embroidery to papier-mâché, jewelry making, and cooking -- this inspiring volume introduces mothers and daughters to the delights of shared creative endeavor. The projects are fun and simple, and produce excellent results. But the most valuable element is the shared experience of making something together.

Inspired mothers and daughters will be delighted with their efforts as well as the moments they spend at work with each other. Organized according to the length of time each project requires -- from an hour to a weekend, or longer -- this lushly illustrated book shows us that anyone can make beautiful and exciting accessories for the home with the simple guidance and inspiration Lyons so wonderfully provides.

Profiles of mothers and daughters show us how deep the family bond can become when creative effort strengthens the mother-daughter relationship. Even the mistakes become cherished souvenirs of personal artistry and remembrance -- made together as dearest friends, mothers and daughters.

4 out of 5 stars When TV is so much fun, it's hard to pull my child away...........2006-10-07

When TV is so much fun (and easy to use to get a minute away) it's hard to pull my child away and have her expand her mind. My sister found this book for me and it has just turned my afternoons with my child around. I'm a stay at home mom and it's been hard to find new things for her to do to pass the time so she doesn't get bored of me.

This book has given us countless ideas of things to make, as well as tips at how to make the project come together and the supplies you will need. I have bought many books to get ideas on projects, and they seemed like things she'll end up making at school in a few years. "Mothers and Daughters" gives you great craft ideas that not only are fun to make, but fun to make together, and in many cases, help the child to make something that they will really cherrish for many years to come.

One craft in particular has become such a hit that my whole family has piched in with ideas. It's how to turn a simple scrap book or notebook into a cookbook. I now have many family members giving my daughter recipes to make at home and to include in her cookbook. She had lots of fun getting the supplies to make her book and each day, she wants to cook something to put in it. I know that this project will prepare her for many important aspects of life down the road, including fractions, writing skills, and trial and error.

Something else that is great with this book is that each section has a fun anecdote that pulls the book together so well, it's not just about crafts, it's about mother and daughter time (or as my mom says "Grandmother and grand-daughter time) that we take for granted in this busy world.

I recommend this book full-heartedly to any mother, step-mother, any woman for that matter that wants to have some real one on one time with a child they love and want to make memories that will last a lifetime. The only reason I didn't give this book a full 5 stars is because I wish it could have had more craft ideas and hope the writer does another book soon.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book with marvelous projects & clear directions.......2000-12-24

I love this book! It provides clear, step-by-step directions for a large number of projects, many of which are unique, and most of which will become family heirlooms. They vary in complexity (so some will be perfect for virtually every age of chiild). There were several I want to make for myself -- e.g., memory jars, made by covering a container with modeling compound and sticking charms and other saved treasures into the clay, so they will harden there. Although I seem to buy every craft magazine and book on the market, that's the only place I've ever seen this particular project.

My one and only quibble is with the title. IMHO, this would be equally appropriate for fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, grandparents/aunts/uncles/teachers and any boy or girl -- as well as making things for oneself. Somehow, I'd feel funny giving parents of three sons (no daughters) a book with this title -- yet it would be absolutely perfect for them, as well as for almost anyone with children and/or a desire to preserve traditions/souvenirs.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Craft Suggestions.......2000-06-20

I have four daughters and even when they were very little we always made our own holiday gifts (napkin stamping, candle rolling, apple wreaths, little journals). My girls are now 15, 13, 12 and 11 and I've begun to run out of ideas! Charlotte Lyons book was given to me as a gift and I have been pouring over it ever since. For one thing, it is a stunningly pretty book to look at and for another, it has craft suggestions that I need -- from the good cheer fairy for the younger ones to the wallpockets for the older ones. They also look like ones I can handle. As my children get older they are certainly more creative but the time we have for such projects grows less and less. I don't think I am alone in bemoaning that fact! Anyway, I am confident that we will have mnay fun hours together this summer because of this book. I wish all of you the same good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of a simpler time.......2000-05-13

I recently received Mothers and Daughters at home as a gift. I've only begun to read the opening chapters and it has brought back so many wonderful momories of my grandmother. She was my "craft" mentor. Mothers and Daughters is more than just a 'How to' book, for me it is a book of memories of a simpler time. I look forward to beginning my first project with my grandaughter!

    5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2000-04-05

Finally! A down-to-earth book that deals with real women, not Martha Stewart superhumans, and gives us a real purpose: spending time with the people we love most in the world -- our daughters -- instead of just making our houses beautiful. My 11 year old daughter and I drooled when we first saw the projects she suggests and couldn't wait to get started. And when we tried making one (the teddy bear is our favorite so far), I found her directions easy to follow and appreciated that she leaves room for individuality in every project. What I really liked is that this book is not just another "craft book" -- it's more like friendly advice on how to form a better relationship with our kids and that's something we all could use. I highly recommend Lyons's philosophy and this book!

Green thumbs and non-green thumbs alike will fall in love with Roots, Shoots, Buckets, & Boots, a remarkably fun and informative introduction to the wonderful world of gardening--and more specifically, gardening with children. Learn how to make everything from a pizza garden (pizza-pie-shaped, with herbs and vegetables for a fabulous pizza at harvest time), to a sunflower house (a secret hideaway with stately sunflowers and lovely creeping morning glories), to a moon garden ("Fragrance is the color of night"). Chock full of helpful hints, clever and artistic touches, and intriguing "recipes" (Moth Broth and Compost Sandwich, to name a few), this idea book will spark creativity and a lifelong fascination with gardening. Nine concepts for theme gardens are presented in a clearly defined yet non-rigid manner that is just right for encouraging young gardeners. Sharon Lovejoy, award-winning author and illustrator of several gardening books, including Hollyhock Days: Garden Adventures for the Young at Heart, has a true knack for working with all kinds of living things, including children. She understands how quickly young people will be turned off by inflexible rules, and instead encourages budding green thumbs to experiment and explore, while providing them with useful guidelines and helpful information. Wonderfully earthy watercolors make this cozy book even more welcoming. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Author of Sunflower Houses: Garden Discoveries for Children of All Ages and Hollyhock Days: Garden Adventures for the Young at Heart, Sharon Lovejoy is a nationally known garden writer whose books, television specials, and projects at her learning landscape in California have introduced thousands of children to the pleasures of gardening.

In her newest book, Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots, she presents 12 spirited, easy-to-implement ideas for theme gardens that parents and kids can grow together. Illustrated throughout by the author's own lyrical watercolors, each garden includes a plan, the planting recipe -- seeds, seedlings, and growing instructions spelled out step-by-step -- and activities. There's the Pizza Patch , a giant-size wheel garden planted in "slices" of tomatoes, zucchini, oregano, and basil. A Flowery Maze to get lost in. A Moon Garden of night-blooming flowers, including a moonflower tent. And Mother Nature's Medicine Chest.

Discovery Walks teach kids how the gardens work, and a chapter on gardening basics includes a child-friendly 10-Minute Plan for planting and maintenance, plus a list of the top 20 plants guaranteed to make gardeners out of kids.

    5 out of 5 stars neat ideas!!.......2007-05-14

This book has things I wouldn't normally think of to get kids interested in gardening and outdoors. My husband used the idea of a sunflower fort and planted sunflowers in a big circle next to our garden. The kids can hardly wait for their secret fort to come up so they can play inside. Our oldest (8) sits around reading it to her little brother so they can pick out their next project. :o)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! Lets start gardening!!! .......2007-02-26

I bought both books. Roots,Shoots,Buckets & Boots, and Sunflower Houses. They are not the same! There are a couple of similar items, but both worth having and different. Sunflower houses shows how to make leaf hats and flower crowns, screechers, boats, pansy dolls, and much much more. The first book (roots, shoots,..) shows more creative gardening and hideouts and things like pizza patches sunflower hideouts and flower mazes. They both teach how to make hollyhock dolls. I recommend both. But if you only want one, get the roots, shoots, buckets and boots. However dont pass up the chance later on to get Sunflower Houses. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Light hearted drawings and magical ideas.......2006-11-30

With lyrical watercolors this lively text explains how to create 12 child-friendly theme gardens, including both a moon garden and a pizza garden. I simply had to buy this book, because even though I'm not gardening with children, I enjoy dreaming up and planting fun theme gardens.
I included this book in my article "25 Best Books For Hobby Farmers", in the November/December 2006 issue of Hobby Farms magazine.

5 out of 5 stars good book, and a warning for parents of small children.......2006-10-26

This book is excellent. The idea is wonderful, the illustrations are beautiful; it makes a great gift; it's very inspiring. My three small boys were very excited about helping in the garden this year, and we paged through the book many times, trying to decide which project to start with.

However, I was shocked to discover that Moonflowers (recommended for the Moon Garden) are not as child-friendly as I assumed! I started some Moonflower vines from seed which didn't do as well once I transplanted them. It came up in conversation and I was told of a relative who almost died from eating something from this plant; recently there was a report on the news of college-age kids who were "pre-comatose" from eating the pods. Of course, you should always keep an eye on kids, and teach them not to eat anything in the garden without permission. But if you have small children, you know something is bound to go in their mouths that shouldn't, at some point. Many plants have poisonous parts, including tomato plants and foxgloves. If you have small children, be sure you know what you planted!!

Overall, I LOVE this book and look forward to trying more of the ideas in it, next spring.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of creative ideas!!!.......2006-08-27

I love this book!! There are so many creative ideas to get kids involved in gardening!!! I can't wait to try them!!

    Book Description

"This collaboration--posthumous in McAlmon's case--has proved amazingly successful. It gives us pictures of two lives--and many surrounding lives--from different angles, as if they had been taken with a stereoscopic camera. Thereby it gives us an impression of depth and substantiality that have been lacking in other memoirs of Paris in the 1920's." -- Malcolm Cowley, New York Times Book Review

There was no more exhilarating decade in the history of modern letters than the twenties in Paris. They were all there: Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Gertude Stein, James Joyce, John Dos Passos, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mina Loy, T. S. Eliot, Djuna Barnes, Ford Madox Ford, Katherine Mansfield, Alice B. Toklas... and with them were Robert McAlmon and Kay Boyle.

Their collaborative memoir began as a book written by McAlmon in 1934. In the late 1960s, Kay Boyle revised and edited the book, adding alternating chapters of her own. The result is a marvelous chronicle of the period as seen through two sets of perceptive eyes. As both writers tell wonderful anecdotes--of Joyce on his evening binges, of Stein holding court, of Hemingway at his most vicious--they beautifully evoke 1920s Paris in this sad, funny, informative, and nostalgic memoir.

"On his side of the dual autobiography (an interesting device which works very well here) McAlmon tells fascinating stories... and he is always honestly direct. You like the man and you like the book... On the other side, Kay Boyle is a delightful writer with a style that can be dazzling, yet strong as steel... It is Miss Boyle who gives us the airy magic of Camelot-Paris simply by telling us the story of her hopelessly romantic life." -- Mario Puzo

    5 out of 5 stars Eagles Without a Cliff.......2003-04-27

This is a strangely, piercingly affecting book ostensibly by and about two largely forgotten writers among the "Lost Generation" of writers and artists in Paris in the 1920's. It is an emotionally engrossing tale, especially on Boyle's part, of what physical and emotional/spiritual sacrifices the life of the committed artist demands.-----Yes, there is plenty of name-dropping and stories concerning Pound, Joyce and Hemingway-But that hardly seems the point and neither does their art (except for Boyle, at times). This book is about what sort of People they were, how they lived their lives, both internally and externally.

The stereotype of the artist as a self-destructive martyr to his or her art is certainly on display here, but the characters aren't represented as hollow stereotypes (which themselves exist, after all, for very good reasons). They leap from the page as living, breathing people, and one gains an insight into the modus vivendi of each of them. And it must be said that, of the writers from that milieu that are still remembered today (mentioned above), only Joyce comes through as a lovable figure, and a good man, despite his drinking bouts.

The major achievement of this book is that it brings home the humanity of both Boyle and McAlmon as they lived their externally festive (especially McAlmon's), inwardly tormented (especially Boyle's) lives. There are several other aspects on which one could dwell, Mcalmon's generosity and relative selflessness (as written of by Boyle, not he), Boyle's supposedly more "Romantic" way of life and art (as written of by McAlmon, not she), but the main effect is that of laying out a physical and psychological tableau of their lives in the 1920's.-As McAlmon confesses, "It is a horrible admission, but some of us are driven to work at times to forget about living life. That creative urge, if you will, or is it that something remembered or contemplated is more entertaining than the actual scene and event being experienced? Somebody else spoke of Marsden as an 'eagle without a cliff', but aren't we all?"-Later he writes, "...we had moments of enjoying the sodden destruction of time in a weary world."---

As we look back on this supposedly "dated" attitude of those expatriate writers, can we really say that their actions and outlook were so dated? What artist or what person has not had thoughts or periods of life such as expressed above?---At one point in the book, McAlmon reports a fellow reveller at a Parisian cafe chiding him for his well-known generosity and telling him that he has "too much humanity." This is the only criticism that can be levelled at this book, if you choose to categorize it as such.

    3 out of 5 stars A book for specialists.......2000-11-01

If you have read extensively about the Lost Generation and their Paris, then the McAlmon chapters will further illuminate what others have said. If you are fairly new to the subject, this book will bore you to tears with its laundry lists of who/what/where/exactly when and at what time so-and-so got drunk. I do not think Kay Boyle's chapters do anything but prove how odious she was.

5 out of 5 stars Memoirs of Paris.......2000-07-12

This is an evocative memoir -- much more substantive than many books exploring the lives of expats in Paris in the 20s & 30s.

Reading "Keep It Together" is like watching "Jeopardy!" You do it to confirm how many diverse things you know for sure. And when you find one, you discover that Ms. Lagatree knows whereof she writes. You have to assume she did her homework on all those other subjects too--so that on that rainy, snowy, or stormy day when identity thieves with a litigious baby come unexpectedly for dinner at the house you're planning to buy, and want your advice on hiring a contractor or hailing a taxi in Tokyo, you'll be cool as the cucumber you grew with tips from this book.

5 out of 5 stars SPECIALIZATION IS FOR INSECTS. .......2006-10-30

Science fiction aficionados, and many others, have likely seen Robert A. Heinlein's admonition, that a human being should be able "to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." It has always made me feel a bit inadequate, since I could probably even take a shot at no more than 50% of those tasks.

But this new book by Kirsten Lagatree offers hope! It is sort of an owner's manual for the aspiring renaissance woman or man. It contains dozens of short, pithy, practical, and wonderfully written essays on everything from how to organize your home office, to how to work a room, to how to perfectly pack your suitcase for a quick business trip, to how to talk to a doctor who's got one hand on the doorknob, to, indeed, how to comfort the dying.

Buy one for yourself and buy a couple more for a few folks you love. Read bits and pieces of it during TV commercials, or while waiting for your clothes to dry, or before you go to bed. Keep it on your bookshelf and refer to it when you need it. And you will find yourself becoming a more competent, capable, complete human being. Specialization is for insects.

    5 out of 5 stars Pumped-up checklists.......2006-10-28

I own a copy of Ms. Lagatree's previous Checklists for Life and found it helpful with the practical matters of life, well organized, and well written. So I ordered this new copy. It is better than the first with even more helpful advice listed. There was an additional bonus, however. I have two twenty-something adult children who spied it on the kitchen table. They picked it up to check it out and didn't put it down. They said, "This is cool but why hasn't anyone ever told us this stuff. They should teach things like this in school." It's good to be cool with my kids even if I have to buy another copy to keep in my house. I wish I'd known this before because it would have made a good stocking stuffer and I could have kept my copy.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book from Kirsten Lagatree.......2006-10-23

Want to know over 200 plus ways to put order in your life in a way even the most unorganized of us can understand? Kirsten Lagatree's new book Keep It Together is for you.
I found being told how to hail a taxi in New York invaluable info, how to fix a leaking pipe, how to comfort a friend who is ill. . . . Being enthusiastic about life and keeping a youthful attitude are what the book tells us so do read it to settle your life. We need to be reminded often that life is all about keeping it together.
