4 out of 5 stars Out of Date?.......2006-10-02

This five year old PDR Family Guide to Nutritional Supplements, first edition, Dec. 2001, is an excellent consise book and easy to read. However it is out of date when compared with PDR Health on-line. To get started this book is good. To get the latest information from PDR one has to go on-line and combining the two can be confusing. I'll not order until the second edition is released.

5 out of 5 stars I use it in my healing practice, and nursing practice.......2005-05-25

Note: First of all, there are 2 natural remedy PDRs, one for Nutritional rRemedies and Supplements, and another specifically for Herbal Remedies. You will NOT find herbal info in the nutritional PDR, nor nutritional supplements in the Herbal PDR.

I have subscribed to the PDR for Nutritional Supplements, as well as the PDR for Herbal Remedies, since they first were available. The Nutritional supplement volumes seem to come out with editions more often than the Herbal Remedies, probably because there are simply a limited number of herbs, and their uses have been well-documented for centuries, if not millenia. The updates of those volumes contain more updated research, and more information about side effects and interactions. The Nutritional Supplement volumes require revision sooner due to the greater amount of research into so many of the newly identified nutrients and their effects on the human body.

As a holistic practitioner who engages in multiple natural healing modalities, in addition to earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, I use natural healing methods in treating my own medical disorders, and have successfully assisted clients to control blood pressure, reduce harmful cholesterol, eliminate allergic responses, quell the bouts of asthma, promote improved respiratory tract function, improve intestinal function and elimination, and restore restful sleep, as just a small sample of what can be achieved using natural methods, nutritional and herbal remedies.

My scientific background and training in nursing makes me especially cautious of overinflated claims about certain remedies, but it is wonderful to have the research listed in a respected and responsible publication, such as the PDRs, to provide allopathic physicians, among others, with the rationales and research that provide the basis for using the nutritional and herbal supplements in a holistic regime for healing.

I certainly do also keep up with the research and information from leaders in the natural health care field, but in presenting information that will be convincing to allopathic practitioners, and win them over to the side of the benefits of natural remedies, the information that comes from the PDRs holds a lot of weight, as it is a resource most physicians are used to depending upon.

I am now ordering the latest Nutritional PDR, and passing on my older volume to a nurse practitioner who is another formerly strictly allopathic practitioner to be won over to the side of natural interventions. This was due to the inability of one of her indigent clients to be able to afford the medication the NP was prescribing for her, and in desperation she was looking for someone well-versed in herbal or natural remedies. This person typically was presenting with blood pressures in the vicinity of 200/130, very very high. Someone referred her to me, and after careful assessment and medical history-taking, she was placed on a regimen of Omega-3/6/9 capsules, CoQ10, milk thistle, hawthorn, and a good multivitamin. By procuring this regimen online, at a low-cost site, the entire monthly regimen cost her less than $40, a fraction of what the pharmeceutical medication would have cost her. Within one week her blood pressures were in the range of 120/70, and stayed in that range. I provided both the client and her NP with thorough information supporting the use of every nutrient and herb, and much of it came from the PDRs.

5 out of 5 stars Brim Full of Information.......2001-11-18

Tired of getting your supplement information from the vitamin shop clerk? This is state of the art stuff. Finally here is a book that both the lay person and the physician can safely turn to. The author has no axe to grind. He neither overstates nor understates, but is carefully objective in his presentation and allows the evidence to speak for itself. Dr. Hendler brings to his subject an open mind, wide ranging intelligence, and a rigorous training in all of the relevant disciplines. He refuses to be a shill either for entrenched medical orthodoxy or starry eyed alternative approaches. The result is a cornucopia of information.

5 out of 5 stars A Critical Resource to Control Your Life Through Health Care.......2001-10-09

The PDR for Nutritional Supplements is the most well organized and substantive publication that I have ever used in over twenty years as a supplement consumer and one of the best literary purchases that I have ever made.

While other publications may purport to be "encyclopedic," they fall short of the mark in paying attention to detail. Dr. Hendler's PDR for Nutritional Supplements is a critical and necessary resource for anyone using nutritional supplements, functional foods and or herbs. The knowledge imparted here will allow you to take control of your life as it relates to health care and maintenance.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2001-10-09

This book is fantastic. Finally a scientific approach to the complex and often confusing information about supplements. Dr. Hendler makes no unfounded statements and he provides unbiased and objective facts understandable to both the lay person and physician. He even shows us the molecular structures of the supplements. This is a great work by one of the long time leaders in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for doctor's office and for fireplace reading.......2003-12-27

This book is under the banner of the famed Linus Pauling Institute (Oregon State University) has it has a great foreword by Bruce Ames. Linus Pauling was one of the best thinkers of the last century and he recommended much higher than RDA / Daily Value intakes from a multi-vitamin as well as some other supplements in order to help procure optimal health.

There is no science yet to suggest that Pauling was wrong about such high dose supplementation --for example to lower blood-toxin homocysteine, the most likely cause of most heart disease, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. However, the medical world is slow embracing the evidence supporting this approach but that is changing.

This book is an important and tightly edited work that will help practicing physicians and interested lay people with factual data, pointers and references and even the most knowledgeable person will surely pick up important health information they would otherwise have missed.

This is a well organized handbook with 27 chapters for the individual vitamins and minerals and their effects, sources and therapeutic indications and drug interactions.

This book has "Tolerable Upper Levels" tables to satisfy even the most conservative physician but it must be said that this heading represents a level that prevents the most uncommon or even trivial interactions, and a level that may well be much below "Optimal Levels" as suggested by Pauling, and which are likely to promote health in the great majority of people.

The book would benefit from a "Pauling Proposed Probable Optimal Levels in Most" table and from the inclusion of chapters for what used to be named vitamin F, with the F from "Fat", i.e. the essential omega-3 and omega-6 oils, think of them as vitamins F-3 and F-6. Present intakes of omega-3s are well below adequate levels while omega-6 (linoleic acid from most vegetable oils) may well represent our most common "vitamin overdose".

The challenge of the new nutrition is figuring out the "Long-Latency Deficiency Diseases", LLDD's if you wish, caused by the insufficient intakes over time of one or several nutrients, from vitamin D and calcium for bone health, to the homocysteine-lowering trio of folic acid, B6 and B12 for heart and other diseases.

This book builds a solid foundation with what is known, it is without technical errors and it is clearly presented. Vital in a doctor's office and much recommended for the interested lay person. .....

This is an excellent reference book on the usage of nutritional suppliments. I would recomend this book to others.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to understanding dietary supplementation.......2003-11-16

I recently discovered that both of my parents (both under the age of 60) have significant bone loss - osteoporosis. Knowing this, made me have great concern about where I stood right now at the age of 36. After a complete exam, blood work, and bone scan,- it was determined that I am showing some bone loss -20%. My doctor prescribed calcium, but it wasn't until I read this book that I understood that it is much more involved than just taking calcuim. Other vitamins and minerals enhance the absorbancy of calcuim, and I was deficient in those as well. With this book, I was able to sit down and determine what I need to be supplementing with and how much. She lists food sources, functions in the body, interactions, RDA recommended usage, minimum doses, maximum doses, symptoms of deficiency, symptoms of toxicity, plus other safety information about each vitamin and mineral covered in her book. Once I knew how the vitamins and minerals are used and how they interact with each other, it all made sense. I especially liked having the information on the safe amounts of usage. I was able to use her guide to determine if I was taking a safe combination or not. (Of course you should always consult with your doctor, because as she states in her book, some medications affect the absorbancy of supplements and vise versa.) This is the best vitamin and mineral guide I have found. I owned her first edition from 1994 and was pleased to find her updated edition from 2000. She is up-to-date with the latest research and makes your homework much easier.

5 out of 5 stars Great info regarding vitamins and many physical ailments.......1999-10-28

This book really covers each vitamin & mineral in detail. She simply explains what they do, how they may interact, describes signs of deficiencies/toxicities, and gives precautions -- such as and when usage needs to be monitored by a Doctor. The section that lists many different ailments(from A-Z), describes how certain vitamins may helpful to alleviate the problem. Sometimes there can be a very simple remedy. It has been very revealing to me specificmedical/medication problems, that warranted discussion with my doctor.

I would recommend to anyone who is interested in their family's health have this book on hand for reference.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Reference Guide.......2007-01-23

My mother recommended this book to me and I use it often. Very good!

4 out of 5 stars Useful and unique, but needs updating.......2006-08-08

The supplement industry moves at light speed at introducing new products, so the fact that this book is six years old is somewhat of a hindrance. However, that being said, it has a unique medical perspective on just about every vitamin, herb, and mineral you could think of.

Each supplement included in the book includes short sections starting with "Basic Information" that shows foods that include the supplement, if any exist. Also there are sections on known effects (studied and proven), possible additional effects (proven via anecdotal evidence), warnings and precautions, and notes for those who are breastfeeding, infants and children, and senior citizens. There is also information on storage, safe dosage, toxicity, and adverse reactions.

This book is written by an M.D., so it does seem a bit overly cautious at times, but in the age of the Internet with so many snake oil salesmen claiming they have the cure for everything from Alzheimer's to diabetes in a nutritional supplement, I find this voice of caution refreshing. I consider this book just one more weapon in my arsenal of nutritional knowledge.

I also recommend the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing". That book focuses on specific illnesses, while this book focuses on the herbal remedies and nutritional supplements mentioned in that book. They definitely make good companion reading.

5 out of 5 stars Factual explanation of the subject matter........2006-02-19

I found your book very useful, from a medical point of view.

    4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2004-10-12

I found this book to be quite helpful. It provided natural sources, effects, deficiency and overdose symptoms, side effects, warnings, and toxity. This ranged from generally safe for adults under 45 to slightly dangerous or do not take. Side effects of an overdose ranged from none known, diarehha to coma. I looked up several different things and they were all there. This is a reference guide, not a how-to. I like having a balance to whatever marketing information is out there.

1 out of 5 stars Why was this book written?.......2004-07-05

We (a class of about 20) used this book in a Nutrition Class. This was one of two books recommended for reference for in-class discussions. We would talk about something and then look it up in one of two or three books we had and someone would read the data. I would say that if we took an opinion poll of the 20 folks in the class, they all would say they were frustrated at the lack of "how to use", "when to use" information in this book. In fact the book goes a long way [or is it's main theme seems to be to Warn us of the dangers of the herb, mineral and supplements]. I can completely see that a Doctor wrote this and is protecting himself from lawsuit being excessively careful in the discussion. However, I don't understand the reason why this book was written in this fashion. It's marginally useful - low scale of usefulness. There are better books.

To me it apperared that the doctor that wrote this book never practiced dispensing the material for healing purposes - he just wrote this book as a "translation" of medical information. No indication was given if the author is an opponent or proponet of alternative medicines.

The bottom line is that the book was all but useless to us in our Nutrition Class...where we were working towards a "practitioner" level.

The sections are heavily weighed to show "Warnings and Precautions", "Overdose/Toxicity", "Adverse Reactions or Side Effects". In fact they could shrunk the book by 1/2 as most of the text was related to warnings and it droned on with the exact same warning text in pretty much every thing that was discussed. A symbol to reflect the dangers could have been posted to each item.

Who is this book good for? The book is [relatively] cheap so anyone wanting to start out in getting the "vocubalary" of this type of information = names of supplements, minerals, and herbs - their origin - alternate names and latin names and a very brief [one or two words] on when to use. If nutrition or healing is but a passing fad to you, you'll do ok with this book - it'll bore you sufficiently to pass on the subject.

If you are even the least bit serious about learning or understanding herbs and supplements and want to try and experiment with these, then DO NOT get this book - it will not help you - you won't learn dosages or how to make a tea or an infusion with this, what it looks like, when to use, how to get access or how it's taken [pill, liquid] look elsewhere, there are much much better texts for the "practical" people.

An alternate book could be "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" found as a customer-reference in lots of health food store. It's written for the same audience but conveys acutal and practical information. [This was our other in-class reference, by the way].

Also, don't hesitate in buying a book solely on Herbs, then one on Minerals and then one on Supplements - the data will be more useful that way. Some books come with pictures so you can identify Herbs or the sources of Supplements.

      Book Description

Learn how to use vitamins and minerals to maintain good health and alleviate the symptoms of common ailments. Nutritionist Amanda Ursell takes a commonsense look at the vast array of supplements and recommends how to use them safely to construct a healthy diet for your whole life. Why supplements work. Many people consider vitamins, minerals, and other popular food supplements such as fish oils to be a kind of "wellness insurance." In this book, Amanda Ursell explains why supplements work and how to get their complete benefits. The role of supplements today. Both population studies and laboratory research conclusively prove that stress, atmospheric pollution, and modern farming methods impoverish the best of diets. Although even advanced formulations of vitamins and minerals can never compare with the outstanding benefits of a diet rich in fresh produce, taking supplements as part of a personalized nutrition program makes good sense to counteract the less positive aspects of twenty-first century living.

      4 out of 5 stars A healthy read.......2001-11-25

This is a well presented, clearly written primer to each of the essential vitamins and minerals. Each nutrient is allocated two pages in which the author discusses; how it works, advice for supplementation and its therapeutic uses. As a bonus theres also an informative section on herbal supplements. The super high resolution photographs of the food are a pleasure to look at in themselves- so much so in fact that my three year old daughter
attempted to take a biteful out of one of the pages! There do however appear to be awfully many pictures of raw meat here which as a vegetarian i found quite repulsive. Some American readers may find the chapter on Vitamin E a little confusing as the British author talks about it's supplementation in terms of milligrams (mg) and not our international units (IU). That said, overall this handy book will come a welcome addition to any

The best way to include supplements into your life is to find them naturally in foods you love. A healthy diet will help you to have a fuller life. As a second option, you can choose to take supplements in pill form.

This book presents the source of the vitamin or mineral with the chemical name, preparations and RDA for adults. When you look up Vitamin B5 you will find a picture of dried apricots, you can also find this in peanuts, tahini paste, sesame seeds, pecans, walnuts, avocados, apples and dried figs. If you decide to go with the dried figs option, there is a delicious recipe in a book called Inter Courses that you will just love. I had never used dried figs in cooking before, but they are really good!

What I really liked about this book is the detail for each mineral/vitamin. On the same two pages where I found the apricots and pictures of other delicious foods, I also found a list of symptoms for if you have a deficiency of pantothenic acid. Stress and alcohol and large quantities of tea and coffee can reduce the absorption of pantothenic acid. Taken with vitamin C, you can help to strengthen your skin and promote healing. This is essential, say after surgery.

A wonderful and very helpful book you might want to keep someplace with your
recipe books. That way you can try to include as many of these wonderful foods into your diet as you can.

There is a great section on "other supplements" which explains Herbal Remedies. Please consult your physician before taking any herbal supplements as they can not be mixed with certain prescriptions.

For such a situation I recommend: Natural Health Magazine Instant Guide to Drug-Herb Interactions. This is a really handy A-Z listing of 150 common drugs with essential information on how they interact with herbs.

5 out of 5 stars The only Vitamin Book good enough to call itself THE vitamin book.......2007-02-15

One of the best nutrient/supplement guides in existence, albeit the title is too short. The Vitamin Book contains information on Vitamins, Minerals, Herbal Remedies, and everything related thereto. Especially helpful are the charts near the back, one of which shows the nutrients contained within everyday food, and not just fruits and vegetables. If you ever wanted to know how much Folic Acid was in a McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese, this book will tell you. This reviewer was actually surprised to learn that there is 100 mcg's of Vitamin A in a Sausage egg biscuit. Overall, this book is ideal for anyone who wants to know more about the vitamins they need, the supplements they take, and the foods they eat. A welcome tool for anyone's better-health arsenal.
