Good info on form for two exercises.......2007-08-10
This book gives good descriptions of how to perform the deadlift and the side press. I learned how to deadlift from this book, and a competitive powerlifter in my gym complimented me on my form. (That made my day.) The sections on "hyperirradiation" and breathing techniques are also helpful, and the side press is a good exercise with which to practice them. I find that I can side press an Olympic bar only if I use these techniques.
I can't give this book five stars because the writing style is obnoxious. Tsatsouline is often trying to sell you his other books and products, not only with ads at the back of the book, but in the text of the book itself. An example, on page 62: "Check out 'Beyond Crunches.' In the back of the book, you can order my books and videos. Or else." Also, the "evil Russian" gimmick sometimes pushes the boundaries of good taste. For instance, on p. 28, Tsatsouline writes, "To get strong and hard without getting big--train heavy but do not do many sets. Thus spake Comrade Stalin." I do not want to take strength training advice from one of the greatest villains of the 20th century.
As many of the reviews here have pointed out, the program described in this book is primarily for people who want to gain strength without gaining size. If your primary goal is strength but you're not opposed to getting bigger muscles, you might be happier with Starting Strength. It has some features in common with PTTP: emphasis on compound movements, preference for five-rep sets, and detailed instructions on proper form. It covers five lifts, not just two. It recommends somewhat less frequency (3x / week) and somewhat higher volume (three exercises per session, three work sets on most exercises, thorough warm-up). And the writing style is much better.
very little factual information.......2007-07-27
Pavel is obviously a great athlete, however his books are filled with very little information about anatomy and physiology, and could be condensed into perhaps 10 pages. The Dragon Door marketing machine pushes these type of publications and kettlebells as a fitness revolution. Save your money, instead look at Power of 10, for example, or Ready Set Go Synergy Fitness, which are filled with excellent routines and theory. I own 4 of Pavel's titles and they are essentially empty pages.
A great book.......2007-07-25
Whether you are an experienced weight lifter or not. His advice on the types of lifts you should perform, and those you should avoid, is dead on. His concepts of the use of tension in lifts is something I had never read about until I read this book. He gives good advice on how to use cycling to make gains. Simple workout, easy to follow, and the concepts can be applied to other excercises. The only real downside is that it is very difficult to learn how to do the lifts properly from the book. If you're an experienced weight-lifter you may already know how to deadlift and may be able to figure out the lifts on your own, but if you're new or inexperienced, you'll need to get someone to show you or buy the companion DVD. He has a very entertaining writing style, even if he has the tendency to exagerate. Most of the "Russian Secrets" aren't either. Cycling is not a new concept, used only be eastern bloc supermen, nor is heavy weights at low reps ground breaking. Both have been used by western and eastern lifters alike for who know's how long. The tension stuff is new though, at least to me.
Amusing and refreshing.......2007-07-03
I liked Pavel's book - humorous at times, plenty of anecdotes, and yet a straightforward approach to training that makes the complicated "Men's Health"-type workouts seem even sillier than they already are. It's not the only book you'll ever need to get strong, but in my opinion it's a must-read for those interested in effectively training towards greater strength.
yawn.......2007-02-11
same old pavel..too much advertising hype for his own books, too much laboured Russian humour(?), and not enough meat. There are no strength secrets. Just lift heavier and heavier weights, you will get stronger. Some secret. Is this man built?

Book Description
This is Volume II: Since 1863 of LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER, Fourth Edition. LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER offers students a clear understanding of how America transformed itself, in a relatively short time, from a land inhabited by hunter-gatherer and agricultural Native American societies into the most powerful industrial nation on earth. The authors promote this understanding by telling the story of America through the lens of three major themes: liberty, equality, and power. This approach helps students understand not only the impact of the notions of liberty and equality, which are often associated with the American story, but also how dominant and subordinate groups have affected and been affected by the ever-shifting balance of power. This Fourth Edition retains the narrative clarity, unparalleled coverage, and thematic unity that are the hallmarks of LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER. It updates the text's proven ability to cover social and cultural history with such timely topics as globalization, the impact of science and technology, evolving roles for religion, and expands upon the text's extensively multicultural coverage. Backed by an ancillary package unmatched in this market, LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER makes its thorough, memorable coverage equally accessible to students and instructors. It's available in the following volume splits: LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, Fourth Edition (Chapters 1-31), ISBN: 0534627307; LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, Volume I: To 1877, Fourth Edition (Chapters 1-17), ISBN: 0534627315; LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, Volume II: Since 1863, Fourth Edition (Chapters 17-31), ISBN: 0534627323.

College student.......2007-10-06
I am a great student at college who loves school and I had to take a mandatory history class. I'm not good at history and do not like it but since I wanted a good grade in the class I had to read this book. This book was confusing to me and was not in a logical order. It kept jumping around from topic to topic in the first part of the book. It was too wordy and did not get to the important facts.
AP class.......2007-05-30
In reference to the other reviewers, the complaints here don't seem to address the actual content of the book - $95 is expensive for a paperback, but that's why the same book can be found for $20 under Used&New.
ANYWAY, I'm a high school student who ordered this for use in my AP United States History course this fall. The book is clearly laid out, the prose is engaging, and the parts that I have read so far are comparable to(and in some instances this one surpasses) Alan Brinkley's "American History: A Survey", which is ranked far better. I'll probably drop another review next year after the AP exam, but it seems to be clear and concise, and the resources on the CD-rom are invaluable.
Textbook price-gouging going on here........2005-12-04
$95 for a paperback book is highway roberry.
Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.
This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.
Worst High School Textbook Ever.......2005-10-13
I teach an accelerated college prep US History class in a high school. Our department selected this book before I arrived at the school in what I've gathered was a flurry of political correctness hysteria to "The American Pageant's" emphasis on white men. Even if Murrin's book makes an effort to be more PC (sometimes to a fault) it makes the much bigger mistake of assuming that readers already have a fairly sophisticated background in American History. I think it's interesting reading, but then again, I have a degree in history, so trying to learn how the concept of 18th century mercantilism is connected to the 19th century concept of progress all on the same page isn't really a major feat of mental gymnastics. Most teachers in my department don't even use the book because it's too confusing for the kids. If I could have my way, we'd just sell them all and buy something that's (gulp) a little simpler.
To its credit, the book has a nice website with lots of maps and images and resources - but in my memory as a high school student (which was during the age of the internet), a clear, concise textbook was a foundation of learning and more important than a nice website. This textbook is no learning tool.

Unorganized, scattered ideas.........2007-08-28
I really hate to be the one to give this book a negative review, specially with all the positive reviews it has gotten so far, but honestly and truly this book did absolutely nothing for me. In fact, I did not get past the firt 2 chapters. I truly believe the Author holds wisdom in her words--I really do-- the only problem for me was that she(or the editor) did not take the time to focus her ideas one at a time and write them in a well-versed and organized format.
Almost every sentence is an advice on its own expressing a different idea to take in, and the reader is being told this and that relentlessly, but is it really getting through? You'll be left wondering if that sentence you just read was the same one you read in the previous paragraph. Didnt she just say that? These are some of the questions I kept asking myself. Alas, as hard as I tried, I could not finish the book.
Make positive and extremely beneficial changes in your life.......2007-08-09
Can't figure out why certain things are happening to or not working for you? You could possibly find the answer in here. "If any area of your life is not working, one of your beliefs in that area needs to be changed" -from the book.
Many universal laws and principles are covered in this book. ie: Energy and how to sense and work with it, love, forgiveness, pain, how your imagination is a very important tool, (and the way it works with your subconcious is pretty amazing.) Each chapter ends with a 'Playsheet' which is very helpful, and gives you excercises to think about and try for yourself.
Besides the abundance of information, another nice thing about this is, while it's great to start at the beginning and read through, you can open this up randomly and read something beneficial.
This is an 'Orin' book, which means evidently the book is channeled from this entity through Sanaya Roman. I've only read a few books that claimed to be 'channeled', and I don't have a problem with it especially when the information is geared towards helping people to make positive life changes. There are lots of ways to grow and learn from reading this book and applying the new knowledge.
As always a good book.......2007-08-07
I really love sanaya's books, they leave you with a warm feeling and an inner knowing. This book was very good but i wish there were more excersizes like her other books ie spiritual growth.
Mark D. Hyde, Author of "Coloring Outside the Lines: One Gay Man's Journey to Self-Acceptance & Spiritual Awakening.......2007-06-16
I initially read Personal Power through Awareness about a year and a half ago. I was COMPLETELY amazed. It felt as if this book had been written specifically for me. The adage, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear is absolutely true. Sanaya Roman's book encapsulated my entire stuggle for the first 35+ years of my life. I so desperately wanted to be the good son, the perfect minister, ideal Christian, husband, friend, employee, etc. I wanted to please everyone, but the one who matters most.....me. This book was momunental in helping me reclaim myself and getting in touch with my energy. I even quote the following reference in my own book. "Being alone, sitting quietly, allowing yourself to rest physically, emotionally, and mentally will give you an increasingly clear sense of self. In those still times you are not playing out any role or any identity, and your soul can speak to you more clearly. You have the clearest sense of your own energy when you are not around others, when you are alone." I just finished reading this book again and even after five times through it, I still walk away with something new, timely, pertinent, and extremely helpful. I have no doubt whatsoever that you will do the same.
My life is forever improved........2007-02-13
This book, as with all books by Sanaya Roman with Orin as her channel, has perminently improved my life. I understand so many wonderful things about the universe that I did not understand previously. I am experiencing joy and love at a whole new level. This book really prepared me for reading "Opening to Channel" by Sanaya. "Opening to Channel" is the greatest gift I have received from any book I have ever read. Although "Soul Love" also by Sanaya, may have benifited me as much and I may not realize it. When a person is ready for this information, it will improve their lives forever! I am gratful that I found these books.

The title may be inaccurate but its excellent.......2007-03-13
This is more a book on understanding people and yes some of the text is a little dated but adaptable if you have a brain.
I would recommend it to anybody in sales.
for the price its worth a try.
Effective Communication with Others.......2007-01-10
If you have a history of being involved in problems with others, you need this book! Have you been fired? Have you had people turn against you? Have you had experiences of being stabed in the back? Get this book, study it and apply it's principals. I have used this information to help clients turn their business relationships around. It has improved the quality of my own relationships and opened doors of opportunity. It can do the same for you.
A self-improvement classic!.......2006-09-06
If your career or volunteer activities require you to interact with lots of different types of people and, more specifically, to get them to do what you want them to do, read this book! Lest there be any confusion, Giblin does not suggest that his readers manipulate, badger or cojole people into doing things; rather, he teaches how to change oneself so that people will want to see things your way. H.t.H.C.a.P.i.D.w.P preaches self-improvement, not strong-arming.
No matter what you do in life, the principles taught in this book, if applied, will make you a more likeable, more pleasant, more relatable person. With the confidence you will gain from applying the principles you will learn to like yourself, the necessary first step in winning the confidence of others.
If it were up to me, I'd make this book mandatory reading for every high school student in America.
Old but relevant.......2006-06-26
This book was written some years ago, but it is relevant even for today.
I haven't read all of the book as of yet, but it is very good and useful so far.
A genuine classic! Very helpful indeed!.......2006-05-07
Not after I finished it and started to write the review I didnt realize this book was first published in 1956. That means two things. First, human nature doest change. Second, it's so good that it can stand the test of time and become a classic.
As there is no content page here on Amazon, I would like to post one here for your reference.

Even if you are a frequent self help book reader, it will still satisfy you well with the no nonsense points. In short, highly recommended!
p.s. Below please some of my favorite passages for your reference.
J.C. Staehle, after analyzing many surveye, found that the prinicpal causes of unrest among workers were the following, listed in the order of their importance:-
1. Failure to give credit for suggestions
2. Failure to correct grievances
3. Failure to encourage
4. Criticizing employees in front of other people
5. Failure to ask employees of their opinion
6. Failure to inform employees of their progress
7. Favoritism pg 24
Remember, human beings are innately selfish beings. They are first, last and always interested in themselves, in their job, their family, their home town, their ideas. Even a question like, "Where are you from?" shos that you are interested in the other person, and consequently gets him interested in you. pg 89
Use "Happy Talk" as much as possible. Nobody likes a Gloomy Gus. Nobody likes to sit and listen to a prophet of doom. People dont like to hear bad news. pg 91
When a would be policitician asked Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes for advice on how to get elected to office, Justice Holmes wrote him: To be able to listen to others in a sympathetic and understanding manner is perhaps the most effective mechanism in the world for getting along with people and tying up their friendship for good. Too few people practice the "white magic" of being good listeners. pg 94
Most of us want the other fellow to think we are clever, intelligent, "smart". But the person who goes around always making "smart remarks", always knocking himself out to be "clever," is not voted in by the other fellow as a "clever person". Instead he gets elected to the classification of "smart-aleck," "blow-hard", or "egotist." pg 95
These three Yale psychologists found the best way to get ideas accepted is to use a low-pressure technique, one of calmly presenting facts, and leaving out threats or attempts at using force. pg 106

Customer Reviews:
I couldn't believe how useful the information is!.......2007-07-21
Steven K. Scott has put together a no nonsense book that will help you be more successful in life, careers, relationships and more. I am so pumped by the information I ordered the companion workbook and journal to begin my transformation. Scott is part life coach, career coach, therapist and motivational speaker. The best part is he is truly successful from using the techniques he teaches. He did not just making his money writing books and tapes. Ever heard of the Total Gym? His company markets it.
Leadership and Goal setting at its finest.......2007-03-07
This book will help you set a goal and follow through on that goal. Mr. Scott teaches the sucessful way of creating a goal and then breaking it down to the minor details of achieveing that goal. Out of this world. He could sell high dollar seminars on this very subject. If you are self employed this book has the potential to double or triple your business in the first year. Alignments are stressed in this book and have really opened my eyes to whom I am parterened with in business. Steven Scott hit a home run on this book!
One of the "success" books that actually delivers specific strategies that you can use.......2007-01-20
This is the earlier version of another book that had more fluff plus 2 more recent projects, one which he sells for well over 100 dollars.
Learn the basics here.
I have realized that he writes his books to wet your appetite for the higher priced courses, the best value being a cd series you can buy (do a search for his name if you want it)
Having said that I think he does a better job of revealing his strategies in this version than he does in the next, more recent book, where he basically says much of the same over again.
Here you will find ways to improve your business or personal life. What I did find most profound was the fact that I actually use some of these strategies before I knew of this material, and they really do work.
You will learn such things has how to properly utilize and handle criticism (hard for many entreprenuers), as well as improve professional and personal relationships by understanding others points of view, and how to get others to listen and understand you as well. I can tell you that these strategies to translate well into the professional life of an entrepreneur.
It touches on 15 different strategies to help you change your life:
1.)Reprogramming Your On-Board Computer (getting rid of damaging self-concepts)
2.)Overcoming Fear of Failure
3.)Turning Criticism from Foe to Friend
4.)Gaining a Clear and Precise Vision
5.)Overcoming Your Lack of Know-How
6.)Overcoming Your Lack of Resources
7.)Achieving Infinitely More in a Fraction of the Time
8.)Dreaming and Achieving Impossible Dreams
9.)Recruiting the Partners and Mentors of Your Dreams
10.)Igniting the Engine of Positiveness
11.)Effectively and Persuasively Communicating
12.)Acquiring the Discipline of Winning Most of the Time
13.)Taking Control of Your Life, One Minute at a Time
14.)Acquiring the Fuel of Passion
15.)Flipping the Switch
While I do feel that there is a bit of a over self flattering in all his materials there are some valueable lessons here for those that don't want to spend 80 to hundreds of dollars for his higher priced courses
Especially at this low price point on amazon, having said all this, it really is a deal, with some great tips with actual *real* strategies (that work) to help you rather than some rah rah book designed to just pump you up.
Great Resource.......2007-01-17
My husband and I believe that The Simple Steps to Impossible Dreams is one of the best motivational books we have ever read. We were able to identify our weaknesses, it makes us aware how negative our subconscious were and we were able to set our goals for 2007. What gives this book the exceptional quality is the road map.
I truly believe if these steps are followed, it will truly change our lives personally and financially.
This book is really really bad.......2006-12-20
Don't waste your money or your time. This is an infomercial salesman's book. Read: "How to be Rich" by J. Paul Getty instead.

Book Description
As all these people become publishers – and even more become blog readers – the nature of the material being produced has moved into the realms of politics, professions and consumerism. For example, “Engadget” is one of the more popular blogs, a daily review of newfangled and exciting gadgets.
Blogs and Blogging in business are relatively new, so new that there simply are no rules. If there were rules, they would be changing and evolving too rapidly to codify. The best anyone can say is “here is some advice based on what is working today, combined with a good dollop of common sense.” As a result, this topic fits the What No One Ever Tells You series format perfectly!
Despite their “newness,” blogs have rapidly proven themselves in business. They serve several functions valiantly, including: communicating with customers, potential customers, and other stakeholders, as a research tool to help uncover what is being said about you, your company, your competitors, and your industry, and even as a type of broadcast medium as some are making significant money by monetizing blog traffic through advertising and other means. Instead of offering our advice on blogs and blogging in business, in this book we offer advice from 101 people who are successfully harnessing the power of blogging.

Lots of Ideas.......2007-09-06
I've just started my blog on technology investigations called "Hack-igations". I was looking for ideas on how to make the most of my blog, and Demopoulos' book was a big help. It's full of stories about the experiences of other bloggers. The stories give me a sense for blogging culture; they help me fix realistic expectations about what my blog can and cannot do for me.
More of the same
.......2007-07-27
Unfortunately, this book is like so many books on blogging and other Web ventures:
1. It promises "insider information."
2. It's a thrown together compendium of the writings of Web marketing "gurus," most of whose only real experience is in marketing their own purported expertise in Web marketing.
3. From reading it, one does glean a few good ideas.
... and like all the others, it will be useful to those who are new to the field. To use an old saying, it's like a Texas longhorn: a point here, a point there, and a lot of bull in between.
A Great Toolbox For The Beginner Blogger.......2007-07-19
A book like this isn't about chewing through pages merely for the purpose of consuming knowledge on social networking. It's for the impassioned evangelist seeking to inspire others to action with nothing more than the seed of thought. The author has taken all these great relationships he's cultivated with winning bloggers around the world and compacted them into tiny, bite-sized chunks of expert advice. Based only on what I read in the book I've developed a blog (..) that within three weeks has attracted about 600 visitors including the attention of more than a few key industry people. And, the book is a great resource to review every once in a while to keep you focused on what works.
Worth a Quick Read.......2007-07-06
This book will take most readers about 101 minutes to read. It is designed in 101 very short chapters of about a page each. In fact each chapter it much like a Blog post. It is a series of interviews with commentary based on the author's discussions with 101 blog writers/experts. I got several ideas from it. It sent me off to the computer to find some of these bloggers. It inspired me to make a post or two. The content on podcasting is a handful of these short chapters. It is well worth a look, but it is not likely something one would read a second time.
A solid effort by Mr. Demopoulos.......2007-05-10
As a person with an interest in blogging and podcasting, this book gave me enough information and anecdotes to keep me entertained and informed.
The book uses individual stories from a diverse set of people in the industry as jumping off points for each given topic area. Grounding each theme in a real person's story provides useful context. The short chapters keep things moving without any unnecessary clutter.
If you are a techno-savvy reader, not everything in the book will be new information, but the author has probed enough nooks and crannies of the topic to unearth more than a few gems.
It's well worth your time if you want to stretch your brain in this area.

Good Study.......2007-06-13
We have the video to go with this book and our Sunday School class of middle age adults have enjoyed it so far.
Experiencing Transforming Power of Prayer in Mississippi!.......2007-05-21
Just completed facilitating a six week Bible study using this cirruculum along with the DVD (which is sold separately) and it was a transforming time. The study is easily assimilated and the study is written for one to do immediate application of each lesson. Pastor Cymbala explains things in a very comprehensible manner. The prayer stories based on real-life people that are members at Brooklyn Tabernacle are heart touching stories that lead you to the throne of God and know without the shadow of doubt the transforming power of God through prayer. I highly recommend this study for small study groups and as on ongoing study to be offered in the church that wants to start a prayer ministry or who wants to renew and re-ignite their current prayer ministry.
Awesome Bible Study on Prayer!!!.......2007-03-05
I attended Brooklyn Tabernacle for a few years during college. The prayer ministry there is amazing. We'd wait 2 hours on line outside just to get into the prayer meeting. To this day those meetings are some of the most worshipful and powerful times in prayer - go to the church if you can. I've seen God work in miraculous ways and His presence is so powerful in that Church because of the prayerfulness of the people. They have a 24-hour prayer ministry in and out of the church. Awesome how God responds when His people pray.
We're using this study in our Sunday school class (I'm a pastor). The DVD is done very well - professional, great graphics, engaging, etc (not that this matters so much, but it's nice to see that there is excellence in the production). I don't see the DVD on sale here but the Zondervan site tells where you can buy it. We bought it from CBD. The content is Biblical and has been inspiring us and challenging us. The discussion questions and Bible exploration portions in the guide are very good. There's also a good section on prayer promises in the participant's guide.
Pastor Cymbala's heart for God through prayer is contagious. The testimonies from each person in each session is evidence of God's amazing grace and His power and sovereignty (DVD). The testimonies will bring tears, and open you up to a whole new attitude towards prayer. Hearing such powerful examples of answers to prayers and the privilege of prayer challenges us to rethink why we don't pray more. "...God is rich in mercy to all who call upon Him" (Ps. 86:5). The last session is also really great for learning how to begin a prayer ministry in your church.
It's definitely worth using the participant's guide with the DVD. There are 6 sessions but you could easily break them up to have the study last for 12 sessions. No church should be without this curriculum. If you want a teaching series that will spark prayer by God's grace, this is it. I can't recommend both the DVD and the guide enough.

Gary Klein studies decision-making in the field, tagging along with firefighters, standing by in intensive-care units, and watching chess masters play lightning-fast "blitz" games to learn how people make choices with time constraints, limited information, and changing goals. From this research, he and his associates have developed a theory of "naturalistic decision-making."
Sources of Power essentially lends the validity of scientific research to techniques that many of us use every day. There's intuition, which is based not on instantaneous insight but on the rapid (perhaps even subconscious) interpretation of perceptual cues. There's mental simulation, a finely honed method of visualization. There's storytelling and metaphor, which enable decision-makers to devise meaningful frameworks and compare their present situations to previous events. Nobody is born with an inherent mastery of these and other techniques, Klein tells us, but we are all born with the capability to develop, through experience, the skill sets experts call upon to make good decisions.
Book Description
Anyone who watches the television news has seen images of firefighters rescuing people from burning buildings and paramedics treating bombing victims. How do these individuals make the split-second decisions that save lives? Most studies of decision making, based on artificial tasks assigned in laboratory settings, view people as biased and unskilled. Gary Klein is one of the developers of the naturalistic decision-making approach, which views people as inherently skilled and experienced.
Since 1985, Klein has conducted fieldwork to find out how people tackle challenges in difficult, nonroutine situations. Sources of Power is based on observations of humans acting under such real-life constraints as time pressure, high stakes, personal responsibility, and shifting conditions. In addition to providing information that can be used by professionals in management, psychology, engineering, and other fields, the book presents an overview of the research approach of naturalistic decision making and expands our knowledge of the strengths people bring to difficult tasks.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I was looking for.......2007-04-14
I was interested in the topic of decision making, both for professional and personal motives. And I decided to settle for this book. Unfortunately it turned out not to be what I was looking for. It is not that the book is not well written, it is just that the scope of the book is limited mostly to, shall we say, "quick" decisions.
The author outlines his model explaining such decisions, arguing that this is quite different from other traditional models. But even if he does a good job at explaining it, some of his findings seem rather obvious, at least to me.
Though it was interesting reading (that's why it gets 3 stars), definitely I wished I had chosen a different decision-making book more suitable to my interests.
4.5 Stars-Intuition comes from experience.......2006-04-20
Gary Klein has written a very good book on decision making in the real world that I recommend be purchased. His major point is that the vast majority of decisions people make are not based on the deductive rationality model of neoclassical economics.Such a decision making approach requires far too much relevant, reliable information and far,far too much time. The neoclassical model can't satisfy the time and information constraints that are operational in real world decision making processes.Klein argues persuasively that ,based on the empirical and experimental evidence carried out by many psychologists over the last 35 years, most decisions are based on pattern recognition:"This is one basis for what we call intuition:recognizing things without knowing how we do the recognizing...My claim in this chapter is that intuition grows out of experience...we can say that at least some aspects of intuition come from the ability to use experience to recognize situations and know how to handle them..."(Klein,pp.33-34).The reason I did not give this book five stars is that Klein appears to be completely ignorant of the nearly identical definition of intuition ,and its role in decision making, emphasized by J M Keynes in his 1921 " A Treatise on Probability "and his 1936 " The General Theory....".Keynes's understanding of the importance of intuition in decision making has been badly butchered by economists like R.O'Donnell,Bradley Bateman, and Roger Backhouse ,who identify Keynes's views on intuition with either (a) a priori thinking,(b)the "grey, woolly, fuzzy, monster" in one's head or (c)metaphysical vision.Keynes's seminal understanding of the importance of inductive reasoning ,argument from analogy, and pattern recognition are reproduced more effectively in Klein's book.Klein also recognizes that intuition may lead to the wrong answer. However,it is a self correcting process over time.Keynes would have agreed completely.Familiarity with the literature surrounding D.Ellsberg's concept of ambiguity would have also strengthened Klein's conclusions because an intuitive approach works better in decision contexts where the information and knowledge base is incomplete, unclear and ambiguous. The rational-deductive approach works, then,in the limit in the case of information that is not complex and is total, complete, and clear.
even high schoolers loved this book ..........2006-04-14
... because it affirms the way they believe they think and act.. at least that is what they told me when I proposed Gary's book to five classes of senior (restless minds) then had lively discussions with them through which I found that most had, indeed, read it... and as they get older, with more experience under their belts, they may need to be reminded of these tools. Also read Howard Raiffa, (e'st al) book, Smart Decisionmaking. - Kare Anderson, SmartPartnering
Recognition primed decisions.......2006-02-13
The book tries to characterize 'time critical decision making processes' . The author went out and interviewed guys leading firemen into burning houses, medics saving people in shock, soldiers deciding to fire a missle at an unknown airplane (fighter or commercial jet?), etc. When he started, he expected to find experts using the rational choice model. In this model, the decision maker collects data, then identifies 2 or more options, and picks the best. This was the academic model. Once in the field, he found none of the experts using 'rational choice'. Instead, they simply took a look at the situation, imagined what would happen if they acted on their first impulse. If the 'imagined future' looked acceptable, they would act. If the imagined future produced a disaster, they abandoned the line of thought and let another concept emerge from their subconscious. This new idea would be subjected to the same visual process. It was something like conjuring up a movie about what would happen. If they didn't like the movie that their subconscious provided, they trashed it and called up a second. The whole process was very fast. At no point was there a 'choice' between 'a' and 'b'. There was only 'will it work', yes or no.
There's no time for a whiteboard when you're facing an inferno........2005-09-26
Sources of Power is a fine volume that systematically dismantles classical "rational decisionmaking" (lets get a whiteboard and compare strengths and weaknesses shall we?) and sets out a wide array of decision-making techniques that we use, often quite unconsciously. These include (and the list here is far from exhaustive):
- Recognition primed decision making.
- The power to spot leverage points.
- Seeing the invisible, or the big picture.
- Storytelling, metaphors and analogues.
- The power of the team mind.
Rather than grind us through the theory, Klein packs this book with analogies and case studies, well told, that illustrate the points and provide a platform for explaining what it is that's going on when people - often in critical life and death situations - need to make the right decisions. There's no time for a whiteboard session when you're confronting an inferno.
Plenty of people can benefit from this volume. It serves as an excellent introduction to decision theory, an insightful approach to understanding the human mind and a practical manual for qualitative researchers who wish to gain more from their interviews. Quite often, as Klein demonstrates, people make massive decisions without even being aware they're doing so.
Is there a downside here? My only gripe is Klein's tendency to promote his own firm and to remind us that Klein Associates does things to a high degree of professionalism. This occurs to the point where an excellent text takes on, just slightly, the patina of self promotion. But that's a minor thing in the big scheme. "Sources of Power" is useful reading.

Book Description
A brilliant investigative marrative: How six average Soviet men rose to the pinnacle of Russia's battered economy.
David Hoffman, former Moscow bureau chief for The Washington Post, sheds light onto the hidden lives of Russia's most feared power brokers: the oligarchs. Focusing on six of these ruthless men Hoffman reveals how a few players managed to take over Russia's cash-strapped economy and then divvy it up in loans-for-shares deals.
Before perestroika, these men were normal Soviet citizens, stuck in a dead-end system, claustrophobic apartments, and long bread lines. But as Communism loosened, they found gaps in the economy and reaped huge fortunes by getting their hands on fast money. They were entrepreneurs. As the government weakened and their businesses flourished, they grew greedier. Now the stakes were higher. The state was auctioning off its own assets to the highest bidder. The tycoons go on wild borrowing sprees, taking billions of dollars from gullible western lenders. Meanwhile, Russia is building up a debt bomb. When the ruble finally collapses and Russia defaults, the tycoons try to save themselves by hiding their assets and running for cover. They turn against each other as each one faces a stark choice-annihilate or be annihilated.
The story of the old Russia was spies, dissidents, and missiles. This is the new Russia, where civil society and the rule of law have little or no meaning.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2006-07-29
I have just finished reading The Oligarchs - all 496 pages of it, and I just wanted to let anyone know who was thinking of reading it that it is an absolutely, incredible piece of quality work. I enjoyed every page.
Good Job!.......2002-10-06
Much better than I expected, a serious work with a great deal of research invovled. It avoided the typical lurid embellishments of the genre, and also made the point of the important period of transistion in the Gorbachev period, where nascent Russian capitalism started. It lacks somewhat in that it focuses on only six men, and they are of varying importance in the post-Yeltsin period. As Putin reportedly said when asked about Berezovsky--"Who?" Nevertheless, a good job, an interesting read and thankfully avoids falling into the tabloid style of so much of the literature on the topic.
The Power of Six.......2002-04-28
David Hoffman's "The Oligarchs" documents in great detail the rise of 6 businessmen--Aleksandr Smolensky, Yuri Luzhkov, anatoly Chubais, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Boris Berezovsky and Vladimir Gusinsky--who became the "oligarchs" who shaped the political and economic landscape of the New Russia. They were merely ordinary Russians until the Soviet Union collapsed. So how did a mere handful Russians end up controlling such an epic proportion of Russia's economy and have such great influence in its politics? And how did they manage to rise at Russia's decline? Hoffman's book will answer these questions by piecing together extensive research and interview to create a well-balanced, serious but at the same time, a downright fun and readable book. "The Oligarchs" is a landmark.
