Book Description
Raise Him Right
Women are complicated. Men spend years in marriage trying to figure out how to love and understand their wives, only to wind up frustrated and ready to give up. Who better to help a man begin to understand a woman than his mother? While you hope and pray for your son’s future marriage, the time for your powerful influence is now! Don’t wait for the world to change its morality; let Preparing Him for the Other Woman show you how to shape your son’s character and teach him how to interpret the heart of a woman. Find ways to make your home a place of refuge, growth, and peace as you guide him toward becoming the kind of man who looks to God for guidance in loving his wife well.
What Kind of Husband
Will Your Son Grow Up to Be?
His is a generation of boys who have better relationships with their Game Boxes, i-Pods, televisions, and computers than they do with their families. His understanding of marriage is that it has little hope for success, witnessing a fifty percent divorce rate both inside and outside of the church. His world is one where pornography is no longer a hidden shame, but encouraged as entertainment.
Can you raise your son to one day love, lead, and protect
a wife and family in a world like this?
The answer is yes. The heartbeat of this book is to give you the tools to help your son become a tender warrior who will one day fight for his family, a godly husband who will faithfully love his wife, and a leader who will be a man of his word.
The time is now to take your love, tears, prayers, and influence and pour them into his future. Even if our world does not change its moral fiber, you can influence your son and bring hope to the next generation. It’s an opportunity of a lifetimeâyours.
âNot only is this an amazing concept, but it meets an urgent need for every mother of boys.â
Lisa Bevere
Speaker and author of Fight Like a Girl and Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry
âI have three sons, two stepsons, two son-in-laws, and nine grandsons! Any help I can glean to give me more wisdom is welcome. I would have welcomed more help like this when I was a young mother raising my young men for âthe other woman.’â
LeeAnn Rawlins
Coauthor, To Love Again
Story Behind the Book
When the manager of a large Christian bookstore told Sheri Rose Shepherd that readers of the popular His Princess TM series were futilely looking for material about raising their sons to be godly future husbands, she knew she could help. âThink about how much farther all men would be in their marriages if their moms had trained them how to one day love and understand their wives,â says Sheri Rose . âWe can take all the mistakes we’ve made in our lives and use them to teach our sons the right way to live. And we can use our most powerful weapon of allâour prayersâto fight for them.â

A Mother's Guide.......2007-09-09
I teach parenting classes for a Pregnancy center located in the lowerclass section of a large city. Many of our mom's are single and trying to raise their family without a lot of support from the fathers. They also din't have good role models in their own families while growing up.
I used this book as the topic for our Mother's Day luncheon. It gave them encouragement that they COULD make a difference! I also included the book, The Power of a Praying Parent..because they need God's help and guidance in raising their children.
Our mom's LOVED the class!
Letting him "go" is easier than you think...she'll show you how.......2007-06-12
This is, by far, my very favorite book on this subject matter that I have ever read. It has compelled me to write a review on it; I sent the link to my sister and friends and they all RAVED about it. More than anything, it has helped me to begin treating my "tiny husband" (as I used to think of him as) as a young man with a godly purpose to his life and doing it step-by-step this early on (he's 6)...which will help me to "let go" when God brings his wife to him someday. It will also allow him to "leave and cleave" to his wife in a healthy manner.
It has also helped me to begin truly loving his future wife and anticipating her arrival one day; I now pray more fervently for her.
My husband related to it so well, too. When I read to him that her husband's mother had been praying for her since she was a little girl, he actually choked up, as his mother died when he was a little boy. He's known that my mother always prayed for him - and I read that passage to him on his mother's birthday to let him know that he was never alone. We both now are treating our son in a manner to which he feels inspired to be a godly man, husband and father.
Simple, practical, loving, and Christ-following. This is my guide to loving my son and helping him to be the man that God calls him to be. Thank you, Shari Rose!

Sons are Awesome!!!.......2007-05-09
I am the mother of 4 sons. I wish I had read this book years ago when I was a young mother.
I am also a teacher of young kids and through the years I have seen a decline in respect among children.
This book had some really awesome ideas for how to totally bond with a son, beginning at a very young age.
It teaches how to show young boys how to respect women!!!!!!!
I am lucky that I had my 4th son later in life, so I did do things right with him. And what the book says is true...if you show boys how to behave, they will. My son is now almost 16 and to this day loves to spend time with me, even in front of his peers. He craves personal time and touch with his momma. I know he is going to grow into an awesome husband who will respect and love women.
So if you are a mother of boys, definately get this book. It would also make a wonderful baby gift to a new mom!!
Laurie :-)
Boost I needed.......2007-01-29
I loved this book! This type of book was one that I had been looking for for a long time. I have a 14 year old son and also work for an organization that works with single moms. I am also ordering this book for my staff who have sons. I was feeling helpless since reading other books that put so much stress on dads being a part of their son's lives and leaving out what moms can do. I agree with dads being the important element in their son's lives 100 percent, but what about the son who doesn't have a father figure or whose father is not active in the son's life? This book gives helpful and easy information for any mom to understand and apply. I highlighted many things in my book so I have a quick reference when I slip up and stop encouraging my son like I want to be. It might be common sense to some moms but to some of the moms I know, this book will be great! It's an easy read, even for someone who doesn't care to read much.

Book Description
The relationship between a father and a son is like none other. Dads have a God-given role to protect and provide for their families, always striving to teach their sons the life skills they'll need to grow into honorable men. But many dads struggle with feelings of inadequacy regarding their fathering abilities. They want to be better dads. Rick Johnson can show them how. In this insightful and practical book, Johnson shows how fathers can be equipped and inspired to be positive role models for their sons. He stresses the significance of male bonding, discipline, and spiritual leadership; discusses important topics such as sexual purity, respect, and self-discipline; and reveals the top ten mistakes to avoid as a father. From commitment and courage to honesty and humility, Better Dads, Stronger Sons helps men strive to be the dads God designed them to be--so their sons can grow to be everything they are meant to be.
Customer Reviews:
Good, solid practical wisdom for dads.......2006-10-23
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Rick Johnson is the founder of Better Dads, a fathering skills program designed to equip men to be more engaged in the lives of their children and he writes from the experience of a less-than-adequate father turned "super dad" following his conversion to Christ. Johnson shares his own failings, fears and weaknesses as a challenge to other dads to encourage them that they, too, can and should be more diligent about their fathering. The book is full of practical advice mixed with godly wisdom and would make a great gift to any father young or old, especially for that dad who feels overwhelmed or under-equipped for the task of spiritually leading his family.
Johnson addresses pretty much all areas of concern for a man. He deals with the importance of fathers bonding with their children, especially the need for an older man to bond with a younger man - he argues that true manhood is something that is caught by being in the presence of men, not something that a woman can teach and definitely not something that the culture is promoting or endorsing. Johnson also deals with the issues of sex and the important role that the father plays in this issue as well as discipline. Johnson is seeking to help fathers produce men of honor...not simply successful by the world's standards, but successful by God's standard - men who live by a code of honor that is greater than themselves and are willing to pay the price necessary to achieve "greatness." Johnson was one of those worldly successes who found that when he reached the top of the ladder, it was leaning against the wrong building - but he has changed directions and now is not only a successful husband and father, but a mentor and equipper of others!
A helpful book for fathers.......2006-07-10
At a time when there is a renewed emphasis on the importance of Fathers, BETTER DADS, STRONGER SONS provides an excellent guide for anyone who would like to have a part in helping to build a generation of stronger young men. By following the Biblical principles and practical applications outlined here, parenting can become a more exciting and less formidable role for every man who is a father. While much of the material will not be new to those who have sought guidance in parenting, Rick Johnson presents it in a dynamic format that inspires follow-up.
His list of "The Top Ten Mistakes that Fathers Make" is enlightening. It includes not only the expected "Giving too little time" but also "Forgetting to have fun" and "Being complacent and passive." Johnson covers many other topics that often are avoided or given the scripture treatment: i.e. the Bible says don't do, so don't do it. He discusses sex, respect, and the importance of showing love toward the boy's mother.
Each chapter is filled with examples, inserted highlights and Biblical references, and is followed by several suggestions for reflection and application. Used as a guide, these are sure to trigger more ideas that a man could develop to meet his own situation. For example, in the chapter "Making a Noble Man," one of the suggestions is to "Tell your son what you think makes a man. Ask him what character traits he thinks are manly." A follow-up might be to rent several "guy" movies and discuss whether the heroes were manly or simply macho.
Rick Johnson not only has written a timely book, he also founded Better Dads, an organization dedicated to equipping men to be better fathers. He delivers training workshops to businesses, churches and schools. Like many in the field, the author lived his subject. He was raised in a chaotic home where he did not get the fathering he needed. As a result, he spent his early adulthood trying to fill that void with drugs, alcohol and looking for love in all the wrong places. His epiphany came with the birth of his first son, and with God's help he has become devoted to forging a better path for future generations.

A Must Read for all Parents & Teachers - Brilliant!.......2007-10-09
Quite simply, this is the best thing i have read on multiple intelligences. As a teacher, it was FULL of practical tips and help and has caused me to think about how I teach. Dr Kathy makes this material accessible and writes in an engaging manner with lots of practical examples and ideas. I liked it so much I bought 5 copies to give to friends.
Not just for parents and teachers, but for everyone.......2007-05-15
This book is a fabulous resource for anyone, not just for those involved with children! I'm 40 years old, not a parent nor a teacher, and I discovered many wonderful things about myself, how I'm smart, and about the people around me. I also learned that it's never too late to train my smarts, so I'm now working on growing my "body smart," which is my least-developed way of being smart. Read this book to learn how you are smart, and how you and the people around you, even if they're not children, can learn to grow the different smarts.
Must Read.......2007-05-02
This is a must read for anyone with children. A wonderful resource for understanding your child of any age. Fun to map your whole family and understand how you can work better together. A great tool if your child is struggling with their educational experience.
Excellent book for any parent or teacher.......2007-03-11
This book is a continuation from Dr Kathy's teaching and lecturing and is written not just on the theoretical, but on a very practical basis. This book has been needed for a long time: it will challenge and inform all parents and/or educators how to identify and work with the God given strengths within each child/teenager. It is an easy to read book with some real gems and "aha" moments. The first two chapters provide a background to the multiple intelligences laid out in the next 8 chapters.
Dr Kathy has provided a great insight for parents into the Gardner classification of multiple intelligencies. If you care about your children, this is a "must read".
Loved IT!.......2007-03-10
This is a must read for anyone who has children, works with children or is around children in any way. If you want to inspire and encourage children to be all God designed them to be, then this is the book for you. I discovered SO much about myself, my husband, my son, my nieces and nephew (many of which are smart in different ways than I am). I loved the way this book is written in easy to read English but in depth enough to give you real information. Also included are many bible references which are GREAT for giving to your children. I loved it so much that I am buying 3 more copies - one for my sister, one for my son's teacher and one for my church library.

This book is a MUST READ.......2006-07-14
Mary's book is a MUST READ; not only for every parent, but also for everyone who has ever had a parent. Her insights into family dynamics are revealing and instructive. Her words bring healing and resolution. Mary's skill as a writer makes her Guide for Pioneer Parents an enjoyable, fast-moving read. But watch out - one time through will NOT be enough! You will want to keep this Guide around to read over and over.
Like Gold.......2006-07-07
Of the three excellent books of Mary's I have been priviledged to read, this is the one that has had me most riveted to each nugget of truth. I am a quick reader, and usually don't read a book twice in a year but this one has me dipping into it almost daily. I have read and re-read the chapters, blinking in the freshness as I absorbed and processed each life altering concept. It has revolutionised my way of life, the sense of who I am, how fragile we are and how Great is Our God. It has given me a glimpse of the Father heart of God and my husband and I have turned our mistaken foundation of parenting back to the example in the Word, thanks to reading this book. I am also peeling away the 'onion layers' of my own childhood.
Mary is a highly proficient messenger of the truth. Her words fly directly from the heart of the healer in my belief and I am honoured to have walked through the pages of her journey and find my own healing in that experience.
Get this book. Even if you have the most Christian upbringing possible. Especially then.

Extremely Helpful.......2006-03-26
This is a wonderful book. I used it to give a presentation at my church on Answering Tough Questions that Children Ask About God.. and Harold Kushner writes such accessible material. It was also useful to me in speaking to my own children about these difficult issues.
Wonderful Book.......2000-11-24
This is a wonderful book. It gives very useful advise to parents who are asked questions about God. The book addresses the easy questions. If you want to be able to answer the hard questions I would suggest you get a copy of An Encounter With A Prophet
supurb analysis of common theological questions.......1997-08-27
This is a supurb discussion of the questions that confront not only chidren, but adults bearing the burden of orthodox creeds. Don't be fooled by the title-this discussion is helpful to all of us who are young, either in chronological age or theological perspective
Excellent for parents & even adults with ?s about God.......1996-11-05
I was taken by surprise when my 3 1/2 year old asked me what God looked like. I thought I'd have another year or two before encountering these tough questions.
I quickly went to the library and got all the books on explaining God to young children. Most books assumed I wanted traditional explainations from mainline religions.
This book actually got me thinking about my own concept of God and where I got it from. I'd recommend this even to people without children.
(Oh, it did help me in a continuing dialoge about God with my 3 1/2 year old

Need A Godly Grandmother? Learn From This One!.......2007-08-21

As a grandmother of three, Yates writes to younger women without preaching, but does manage to convey her wisdom and experience. If you're a woman of faith who is struggling to balance all the demands and challenges of raising great kids in a one-parent household, you'll find help and hope here.
The subtitle gives you very good clues about the content here: you'll get advice about financial issues, discipline and child care, and also about how to move forward on your own journey as a person and parent. Good advice, from a friendly and effective writer.

"Living Well" Is Such An Attractive Idea.......2007-06-05
Most days I don't worry about "living well" --- I'm just hanging in there, taking things one day at a time, trying to stay calm and focused. Right after my divorce I didn't believe "living well" was even an option for me. Some days I still doubt it. But I am moving forward, step by step. This book did not tell me anything new, but it did remind me of some useful truth. I am grateful to the author for taking the time to remind me of these things.
Barbara Sheldon, M.S.W.
I also highly recommend: Raising Great Kids on Your Own: A Guide and Companion for Every Single Parent
One of the top books on this topic.......2006-04-01
Mothers are an essential influence in their children's lives. "I want to make the strongest case I can for your child's need for you," Yates says. "Motherhood is not a trial run. I exhort you to try to be in place for your children - especially if they are young. Provide stability and security for them and nurture them. Never forget that you are the first and foremost teacher your children will ever have."
Living Well as a Single Mom contains candid advice on self-care, time management, finances, choosing safe childcare, discipline, peer pressure, and emergency preparedness. Additional resources are listed at the end of each chapter for quick reference.
Being a single mom is an exhausting job with more to do in a day than can humanly be done. The fact is, the buck stops with the single mom and she can use all the support she can get. People tend to distance themselves from single moms. Yates comes alongside and encourages women to do what must be done, one day at a time.
A speaker on the well-received Divorce Care video program, Yates is also the author of Ditch the Diet and the Budget, and Living Well in Retirement. An award-winning humor columnist, Yates is the proud grandmother of three "grammy" awards.
With straight talk, Living Well as a Single Mom gives nuts and bolts advice, and is one of the top books on this topic. It's a road map to hope in an impossible situation. Put this book in the hands of any single mom, even if she's been single for years. - PeggySue Wells, Christian Book Previews.com

Welcome Guide for Parents.......2007-09-19
Having read a number of books on parenting, this book was found to be the most inspiring in terms of causing us to reach to God. As Christians we are called to walk by faith in every area of our lives. This book shows us how to be loving and strategic in our parenting whilst reaching to God in faith believing for our children also to walk with Him.
Teenagers.......2007-08-09
Reading parenting books takes time of which parents have little. This book has been encouraging and convicting- well worth the time. I highly recommend Age of Opportunity to any parent!
Parenting Teenagers.......2007-07-09
GREAT BOOK.
If you enjoyed "Shepherding a Child's Heart" and desire to train your children to be thoughtful and caring of others in their heart - not just training behavior - you will love this book. It looks at the great opportunity we have in the teenage years to help them see their self-centeredness and trust in Christ to be transformed.
Get to the heart of the matter.......2007-01-30
This is the best book I've read on parenting teens from a Biblical perspective. Tripp helps parents think about what the heart issues are, not just control the external behaviors. If you're interested in taking the time to use the trials of life to point your child to the gospel of Christ, this book is for you.
Great Resource.......2007-01-19
As a young pastor who does not have any teenagers of my own, this book has been a great resource to hand out to parents. Tripp's book has really helped open many of our parents' eyes to the wonderful opportunity for discipleship through the teenage years.

Chadron MOPS loves Tricia Goyer!!!!.......2007-07-12
If you can name the members of the "Brat Pack", wore leg warmers, or can still recite the lyrics to a Cyndi Lauper song, then this book is for you. Children of the 1980s are fondly referred to as Generation X. Tricia Goyer's book Generation NeXt Parenting explores the parenting styles of this generation. Tricia's insight from her own childhood lead her to change her parenting style to separate her from her baby boomer parents. This book is easy to pick up and start reading from where you left off. She has a style of writing, which incorporates original text, Biblical reference, quotes from other parents, and 156 other cited authors. She is able to bring each chapter together with an 80's song lyric which brought back a lot of my teen memories. In this day and age we are inundated with an overwhelming amount of how-to books. However, this book offers a practical approach to parenting with a study guide to develop your parenting skills. I would recommend it to fellow Gen X'ers.

Boomers: great gift for your daughter.......2007-06-26
Okay, I admit it--I'm not a Generation X mom; I'm a boomer mom, but the mom of several in the next generation and now the grandma of one and one-to-be. However, I found Tricia Goyer's book engaging, immensely helpful, understanding and just plain fun. I'm giving it to my daughter--who often feels the older parenting books just don't "fit." The author has done extensive research on parenting, has lived the ups and downs of being a mom to several kids (one from her teens), and has studied and incorporated the wisdom of scripture. I highly recommend this book.
Wise, Yet Never Pompous.......2007-02-06
For a few years now I've been a fan of Goyer's novels, with their realistic details, believable characters, and fast pacing. "Generation Next Parenting" is my first introduction to her non-fiction skills, and I'm suitably impressed. Here, too, Goyer deals with believable scenarios and honest struggles that Christian parents face.
I am the father of two daughters, ages 12 and 14. My wife and I have parented from the onset with the belief that we want to prepare our kids for life, not just protect them from it. Goyer finds that balance in this easy-to-read book, offering encouragement and philosophical angles to raising children. The pages are rich with spiritual insight, Scriptural foundations, and bits of humor. The quotes from Gen-X bands (Chicago, Gloria Estefan, Talking Heads, etc) add a light touch to these sometimes serious issues.
If you're struggling with your own generational parenting style, if you're wondering how well you are doing in God's eyes, or if you're just interested in a wise, yet never pompous, guide to "getting it right," then Tricia Goyer's book is for you. (And don't forget to check out here great fiction titles!)
Thoughts from an Old GenXer.......2007-01-20
"Generation NeXt" turned out to be an intriguing read for me. I am on the line between Boomers and GenXers. Different sources have placed me in each camp, so if I'm a GenXer, I'm an old one.
My review will be from the perspective of an old GenXer with a teenager and young adult children. At times, as I read "Generation NeXt" I felt exactly that, old, but then I'd turn a few pages and identify with exactly what Tricia had penned.
Had I read this book when my children were younger, I think I would have gained insight leading to freedom from some guilt baggage I lugged around for far too many years.
Tricia's "Generation NeXt Parenting" is an encouraging pat on the back with plenty of spiritual and practical challenges tossed in. She doesn't take traditional problems and toss out advice on how to handle it as much as she covers the holistic issues of parenting and Christlikeness.
If you are looking for another parenting book that has an index and multiple tips on how to handle potty training, you won't find much in "Generation NeXt." However, if you desire to dig to underlying motivations on your part and your children's behaviors, there is help offered here. Of course, a lot of the advice is what we who call ourselves "Christian" know because it's preached from the pulpit, radio and other books. But it bears repeating until we "get" it. Tricia gives practical ideas for how to get on track or back on track spiritually so that you can be the parent God calls you to be.
I learned far more from "Generation NeXt" than I thought I would. Tricia peppers her thoughts with those from other struggling parents and facts regarding the unique building blocks GenXer's have been given.
I thought of several friends who have younger children who could benefit from this book and intend to get a copy to them.
Generation Next Parenting, by Tricia Goyer.......2006-12-25
In today's generation, Christian parents face more obstacles than in any other point in history, perhaps even more so than those early Christians who hid their churches in their homes. With the advent of cable television, the Internet, cell phones and seemingly omnipresent advertisements telling our children - and let's be honest, us - how to look, act, dress, live, and what to believe in, Christians are engaged in all out warfare for not only for our own souls, but those of our children as well.
It doesn't help that Christianity is more splintered than it's ever been. A line has been drawn down the middle, and sides have been chosen: there are those on one side who deride "cultural sensitivity" and "Contemporary Worship" as "watered-down" and departing from Scriptural truth, and those on the other side who sneer at folks still reading their New King James Bibles, calling them "legalistic" and "not with the times". Popularity of speakers and spiritual self-help books abound, to the point where recently, when a young lady was threatened by a burglar, she pulled out - not the Bible - but rather a popular devotional book instead.
So, there a skirmishes all around, one side pointing the finger at another, but one thing that cannot be denied is the almost overwhelming crop of young parents and even younger children who feel isolated and cut off from God. They are desperately seeking answers in a post-modern age that refutes the sovereignty of answers, and many of them feel desperarely alone in their fight.
Generation Next Parenting, by award winning novelist Tricia Goyer, is an excellent devotional - not self-help book, not sweeping craze built on well-meaning concepts and snazzy catch phrases. It's an excellent tome of guidance for today's young parents. Founded on sound, Biblical principles - using only three or four different translations of the Bible, rather than fifty - Generation Next cuts right to the heart of what it means to be a young parent today; facing challenges and worldly opposition that our parents and grandparents never had to face.
A big selling point of this book is Goyer's frankness concerning her own mistakes and downfalls in life; she's open and honest - sometimes painfully so (but in an empathetic, good way). For me, as a young "Gen X'er" parent myself, this made quite an impact: I can't count how many times I've read a devotional book by some award winning speaker, pastor, or theologian, and thought to myself - "Hmm...must be nice living in your world." However, throughout Generation, I laughed, I winced, I sometimes felt stirred, (no, I didn't cry - because of course, we men never do that....sniff.)
The book's format is unique, as well - filled with relevant cultural quips and anecdotes, (those of us secret Duran Duran admirers will feel right at home), it's laid out more like a study guide or textbook, rather than a...well...really big book with lots of words that'll never get finished in the middle of work, doing the laundry, feeding the kids, changing the diapers, (which this man does do), and running the kids to every practice and event known to man. But don't worry, "busy bees" - simplify is one of this book's loudest hearkening calls.
On a final note, MEN should absolutely, positively read this book as well. Though it's written with a decided slant toward the female reader, for too long Christian men have distanced themselves from the "messier" side of leading the home spiritually (and I do mean "messier" literally; my father always said he changed the required amount of diapers a man was supposed to - one for me, and one for my sister!). This book gives practical, ground floor advice for all parents who desire their homes to be Godly ones, and should be on every Christian "Gen X'er's" shelf.

Book Description
Parents of teenagers in mid to late high school will appreciate this resource as they wade through myriad details concerning college applications, financial aid applications and admissions procedures. Tom Shaw, as a parent of collegebound teens, and as a seasoned educator and Christian college administrator, helps anxious or simply interested parents guide their teens to making the best choice for their college experience. Tom helps parents answer questions like:Is college the right choice for my teen?Would my teen thrive best in a secular or Christian environment? What are the differences between private, liberal arts and big state schools? How do I get involved without appearing controlling or overbearing?Written from the perspective of a Christian parent, this book places particular emphasis on the parent's role as nurturer and shepherd of their children's spiritual future. This resource would also be excellent for youth leaders and mentors of high school students nearing graduation.

Not bad advice, Christian or not.......2006-07-12
"The college search is as much an art as it is a science" (p. 13).
"Your teen's foundation of faith should be a strong consideration when choosing a college. During those undergraduate years, he will learn not only what to think, but how to think. Your student will question many things during college, including his faith. And the questioning of faith is not necessarily a bad thing -- it's a normal part of development. Think of it as an unpacking of faith" (p. 19).
"Many Christian parents naively send their student to a state school because of the affordable cost, without counting the cost of that experience on her spiritual well-being. In ten years, do you want to be asking yourself, "Was the cost really worth the price?" (p. 55).
This slim book does not bash non-Christian schools, but it does send a warning message: your son or daughter will be exposed to other thoughts and beliefs. For me, that is one of the points in SENDING your kid to school. Enough said.
The interesting thing is that Thomas Shaw really has a number of good insights into the college selection process, the admissions process, funding college, and "letting go." These insights are good for all parents helping their students go to college, Christian or not. If you are non-Christian, you will probably tire of the Biblical quotes sprinkled throughout the text (they are italicized and offset, and easy to skip over). If you are Christian, Shaw leads you through instructions from the Bible that are relevant.
The college selection process is complicated! Whether you like this book or not, never depend on one source of information. Read as much as you can, and make sure you visit those potential colleges. College Bound is one step in this journey.
Son or daughter looking at colleges? BUY THIS BOOK!.......2006-06-13
This is an outstanding book that begins with the philosophical considerations that parents need to help their students think through regarding the decision about life after high school and ends with very practical advice about options on how to pay for college. The intended audience for this book is the parent themselves, not the student; and the advice is solid, well-research and presented in a easy-to-understand manner that parents will appreciate. One caveat about the book, it ends when the student goes off to college - it is not a book about parenting through the challenges of college, only the decision-making process of selecting a college and the work necessary to get a student to that right next step. But, in what it does present, College Bound is really a very good read.
Shaw begins with helping parents think about the various options for their soon-to-be-graduating student - including presenting the option of taking a year off of school to mature, work, travel, etc., which is excellent advice and needs to be presented as a viable option to parents today. However, if college is in the future for a student, Shaw makes sure that parents help think through the various options of community vs. four-year college, and Christian vs. secular. Not every school fits every student and sometimes the choice that parents made isn't going to be the same as their children - a good reminder that Shaw drives home early and often.
College Bound is full of useful and practical wisdom for narrowing down the college choice as well as tips for admission, financing the college experience and the transition from high school to college. It's like having a college guidance counselor at your fingertips! Shaw ends with an encouragement to Christian students to make sure they plug into a good church home in their new community as soon as they settle down and then gives a few pages of valuable Internet resources as a final parting gift for those who still need more information. I found the book to be easy to read, very informative, and written with a sound Biblical foundation and would suggest this book to any Christian parent of high school-aged students.
