The book is designed as a text for students and as a professional resource for practitioners. Clearly written, the book offers an expert and comprehensive review of the current literature and focuses on issues relating to the most vulnerable older people. Gerontological Practice for the Twenty-first Century also features case illustrations throughout and brief end-of-chapter questions for review.
The book has four parts. Part 1 reviews current and classic theories of aging and proposes an original framework for an integrative approach to practice with older people that incorporates both individual and policy-level interventions. The approach is based on current themes such as a life course perspective, heterogeneity, diversity, and inequality. Part 2 covers such common and important psychological problems among older individuals, as anxiety, depression, suicide, substance abuse, and dementia, and describes appropriate, evidence-based interventions. Part 3 considers the social psychological picture by discussing working with older families, end-of-life care, bereavement, and work and retirement. Part 4 focuses on core sociopolitical issues in the lives of older people: economic policy, poverty, health policy, quality-of-life concerns, and social services.
Current, authoritative, and original, this single-volume gerontology resource will be of valuable use to graduate students and practitioners.

Book Description
FROM THE FOREWORD by James Birren:
"Gaining understanding of aging is one of the most complex issues facing twenty-first century science. This book addresses the complexity of the factors that interact and influence the course of our longer life expectancyâ¦.How we humans grow old is a product of our genetic background as members of a species and our families. But the genome expresses itself in physical and social environments that modulate the appearance of heredity traits. In a sense aging is an ecological problem in which the dynamics are often difficult to explainâ¦.This book brings information from the sciences together in a way that is rarely doneâ¦..It provides an integration of knowledge about the dynamics of aging and can promote wisdom about how we can modify the life course to our advantage."
Â
In Health, Illness, and Optimal Aging: Biological and Psychosocial Perspectives, Carolyn M. Aldwin and Diane F. The Cultural Context of Aging: Worldwide Perspectives
Second Edition Manufacturer: Bergin & Garvey Paperback ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
Accessories: ASIN: 0897894537 |
Book Description
This volume uses the concept of culture to explore the parameters of aging and being old in a worldwide context, thus providing a true cross-cultural and qualitative approach to social gerontology. Containing both specific case studies and broader analytical articles, this revised and expanded second edition focuses on the multitude of cultural solutions societies have available for dealing with the challenges, problems, and opportunities of growing old. Composed almost exclusively of specially commissioned articles, the text is organized around six topical areas which cover the major concerns of cross-cultural social gerontology. Each section is preceded by an introduction providing a framework for the chapters and highlighting key related issues. Also included are state-of-the-art resource guides including Internet sites, special student resources, data sets, and annotated bibliographies of related readings. The authors come from the fields of anthropology, sociology, gerontology, social work, psychology, psychiatry, and nursing. Through explorations of the experiences of real people, the contributors illuminate how elders actually live in such places as U.S. urban ethnic enclaves, rural Kenya, a South Seas island, urban China, or a New York City women's shelter. Dealing directly with key practical issues relevant to those seeking to pursue a career in the aging field, this volume covers: policy implications of demographic aging; culture and successful aging; culture and caregiving; gender and aging; grandparenthood and the crisis in urban families; informal social support; homelessness and aging; nursing homes and pet therapy; assisted suicide and "death hastening behavior"; the aging woman and widowhood; rural aging; self-help groups; and the cultural response to Alzheimer's disease. This essential text allows students to understand fully how culture can dictate what may appear to be "natural" responses to elders and aging.

Women Over 50: Psychological Perspectives
Varda, Ed. Muhlbauer Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387463402 |
Book Description
A womanâs middle age had traditionally been regarded as a time of loss and decline. But in the wake of the women's movement and other societal and cultural events, a profound shift has taken place. Far from being marginalized, midlife women stand at the forefront of a great transformation of cultural perceptions and attitudes. They are rejecting stereotypes, embracing new opportunities, and forming what this important book terms "a new collective middle-aged identity."
Women over 50: Psychological Perspectives analyzes the challenges, benefits, coping strategies, problems, and accomplishments associated with the midlife experience. Ten chapters present the state of research (and correct longstanding myths) regarding significant aspects of middle-aged women's lives:
Women over 50 bridges a major knowledge gap in the feminist-psychology literature, making it an essential resource for clinicians and advanced students. It balances optimism and realism about older womenâs livesâand younger womenâs futures.

The Many Faces of Health, Competence and Well-Being In Old Age: Intergrating Epidemiological, Psychological and Social Perspectives
Wahl H. Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402041373 |
Book Description
The main aim of the book is to provide an interdisciplinary treatment of a set of key issues of current ageing research, i.e., health, competence, and well-being. These key issues are addressed based on three converging research streams: social-ecological research, which assumes that major processes and outcomes of ageing such as day-to-day competence are shaped by social and physical-spatial environments; geropsychology research, which is driven by a life-span developmental conception of ageing; and epidemiology, which offers most fundamental disease, function and prevention-related data. Each of the three major research directions are outlined by a short introduction, followed by three chapters treating in an empirical manner most recent key research questions. All chapters are then also discussed by renowned ageing experts. This volume links ageing research with policy considerations and implications and establishes a link between European research and the knowledge base of the international scientific community concerned with ageing.
This book will be of great interest to scholars and graduate students in ageing research, in the social and behavioural field as well as in epidemiology, geriatrics, geropsychiatry, demography, and biogerontology.
