2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed for what I thought I was getting.......2006-08-25

When I first looked at this book at the bookstore I thought, Great,,my son has ADHD and was looking for a change in his diet to help. However the book just barely skims any one topic with a paragraph or two if you're lucky on anyone subject and has no depth to it at all. If you're just looking for the tip of the iceburg this is it. There is nothing more than an overview to any subject when it comes to amounts, dosages for supplements or nutrients and the amount needed. About half way through I quit reading it since it was of no help other than a broad spectrum overview. The Myth of Learning Disabilities..etc..by Robin Pauc I think, was much better at first glance and actually had dosages for supplements to know where to start and why this or that would help brain function etc. Hope this helps.

**** I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already.

A.D.D. stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. The "H" stands for someone with A.D.D. and has hyperactivity with it. If you are looking for something with A.D.L.D. ("L" stands for a problem with "Learning" instead of a problem with "Hyperactivity".) Then this book is NOT for you. Nothing in this book even remotely touches A.D.L.D.

This book is put together to give an idea of how to treat the symptoms of A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. naturally. That does not mean you will successfully treat the disorder by what is in this book. But what parent would not want to read everything they can find on the subject and gain an idea of what else they could possibly do? This book will have you parents saying "Yeah! That is exactly what my child is like! I know exactly what you mean!" I may be a "reviewer" but I only agreed to review this book because my own son is A.D.H.D. Whether you give medication or not, this book is for you! The concerned parent! The one who does not want to miss a chance of helping your child have a better life, now and in the future!

This book has been a best seller for a long time. It is revised often, as all good medical non-fictions are. After all, scientists and doctors are learning new things every single day. The public needs to be educated. Here is your chance to BE educated. Do not let it pass!

The chapters include:

If You Want Something Different, You've Got to Do Something Different.
Going Through The Open Door
"But Why Do I Have ADD?"
The First Step Toward Changing Your Diet
What Should You Eat?
Tasty Recipes
The Importance of Detoxifying
Supplements That We Need

5 out of 5 stars The ADD and ADHD diet by Bell and Peiper.......2003-05-05

Many Doctors seem to have limited knowledge in the area of nutrition. This book gives one insight into possible alternatives to traditional medicines. Having family members with multiple allergies, I feel this book shows you other poosiblities. This was a great introduction to ADD and diet options.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-03-13

This book makes total sense. Why not try the nutritional approach to ADD it can't hurt. The book brings up some great points. One being that people with ADD/ADHD are more prone to food allergies. Allergies to everyday foods can contribute to negative behaviors assocaited with ADD.

Book Description

Autism is now an epidemic in the United States and in much of the world, rising by as much as 1000% in some areas. The Healthy Mind Guide: Reversing Autism explores why and offers effective treatment options and the possibility of a positive outcome via natural medicine therapies that can ameliorate or reverse the disorder in many cases.

Part I of the book covers the basics of autism—what it is and what causes it. The book includes discussion of the following factors that are often involved in the disorder: vaccines, heavy metal toxicity, nutritional deficiencies/imbalances, food allergies, digestive problems and fungal overgrowth, viruses or viral overload, immune dysfunction, problems in the birthing process, and energetic legacies from unresolved family issues in previous generations.

A chapter in the book is also devoted to the deeper question of what makes a child susceptible to autism—after all, not all children who are vaccinated develop autism, for example. Included in this discussion is the work of William J. Walsch, Ph.D., whose latest research may well have pinpointed the genetic component of autism that has previously eluded scientific inquiry.

In addition to the biochemical therapy practiced by Dr. Walsh, Part II of the book covers a range of natural medicine treatments for autism. These are advanced therapies that demonstrate the comprehensive healing potential in the field, and include treatments to eliminate allergies, integrate children's listening and learning skills, nutritional supplements to correct imbalances, cranial osteopathy to reverse birth trauma, and many more.

5 out of 5 stars Most well-developed overview to causes & treatments of autism.......2007-07-05

Stephanie Marohn's books on mental health issues are all excellent and this one on autism is a good starting place for anyone wishing to find out more about Autism and how to effectively treat it. One challenge in writing this book was that there are multiple factors contributing to the development of autism, and the most prevalent factors happen to be iatrogenic - standard medical practices that cause illness. A recent study survey in 2 Western states showed that children who were vaccinated were more than twice as likely as their unvaccinated peers to have autism and other developmental disorders. The medical establishment and those indoctrinated by the cult of modern medicine don't want to acknowledge that they are causing unneeded harm to millions of people. There are financial and psychological reasons why many people won't face that reality. Thus, Marohn's book looks honestly at those issues and quotes doctors who oppose vaccinations and certain unnatural child delivery practices. One has to accept the validity of the factors cited in the etiology of autism to appreciate how the treatments discussed in the book work. A spectrum of treatments is explored (and the focus is on the most cutting edge and effective approaches, not the more mainstream approaches that most people investigating the subject already have exposure to). Most children will benefit immensely from a combination of the approaches discussed in this book. There is a growing body of evidence to support many of these approaches and much evidence that standard drug therapies cause a variety of side effects and impairments. Wouldn't it be logical to try the natural approaches first? Well, much of modern psychiatry and allopathic medicine are concerned more about conformity to dogma than using critical thinking and sensibly looking at all options. Stephanie Marohn looks at nutritional therapies, allergy clearing, osteopathy, homeopathy, sound therapy, and even family therapy and shamanic type interventions to help resolve issues contributing to autism. That's a lot better than just giving a child drugs, external behavior manipulation, and hiring someone to make sure the child gets physical and social stimulation (typical conventional approaches to autism). While this book doesn't cover every alternative therapy or go into great depth on each topic it discusses, it offers a good overview of the types of treatments that are working and it explains them in a clear manner. At present this is the ideal book for people looking to begin to understand autism and how to treat it - it's time to look beyond the DSM (the psychiatric diagnostic and statistical manual) and learn to really help those with developmental impairments.

1 out of 5 stars An excellent book (if modeling pseudoscience is your aim!).......2005-09-20

As a professional/advocate in the field of autism treatment, I am continually disheartened by the large number of false claims made about the causes/treatments of this disorder. This book only adds to that trend.

As of the writing of this review, there are still no definitive data to suggest that autism is caused by environmental toxins or vaccinations (although the author suggests otherwise). While the effects of environmental influences continue to be investigated by competent researchers, it is irresponsible to suggest to parents of children with autism that we already know the cause of this neurological disorder. The only influence/potential cause of autism that has strong evidence to this point is a genetic influence.

Homeopathic treatment of autism? How can the author seriously suggest that such a treatment is advisable? Homeopathic compounds have NEVER been shown to be effective for ANY disorder (autism or otherwise) under controlled conditions (and by that I mean double-blind placebo-controlled studies). Although many persons have reported a benefit of homeopathic rememdies in their own lives, just as many people have reported the same effect when given a placebo. This suggests that homeopathy rests on people's beliefs for its perceived effectiveness.

I typically suggest that people search the "Association for Science in Autism Treatment" on the internet to get a handle on what professionals really know about the causes and effective treatments for autism.

3 out of 5 stars A nice compliation of alternative approaches to treating ASD.......2003-10-03

This is a good book for parents as an overview of alternative treatments for ASD children. Note, it contains some approaches not all approaches of alternative medicine. I would sincerely recommend this book but if you are a parent looking at all alternatives, including Children with Starving Brains by Dr J. McCandless as well. These two books will provide you all the information you need in evaluating next steps with a good, thoughtful, forward thinking doctor.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful and authentic!.......2003-02-06

I am very excited by this book! As a professional working in the field it has been difficult to recommend books to parents of this client group. While it's wonderful to read heartfelt stories of parents struggles and them finding answers BUT I often feel uncomfortable if a particular 'brand' of therapy is seen as the 'answer'.

This book shares many 'answers' and feels like parents are at last getting the parts of the jigsaw. It's up to them which part they place down first! For professionals the book is educational and informative.

The chapters on vaccination, nutrition and detoxification particularly encouraged me. Many times I hear people approaching these subjects as 'alternative' and by association are seen as somehow being invalid.

I found the author's research impeccable and her authentic way of writing made it hard to put the book down.

Chapter 11 is a wonderful chapter talking about Levels of Healing using a structure I am slightly familiar with. The tone of the writing makes me interested and curious to follow up on these ideas and approach. Even I would normally dismiss some of these methods as 'far out'

The symbols 'See also' and ?Resources? are very user friendly as are the endnotes and references.

There is a chapter on the method I employ. I found was an excellent description and a clear understanding of how the work can help autism. After all the reading I've done in this area, this must be the best! The author is an excellent interviewer. Such depth of understanding of the various treatments- it's as if she has experienced them all!

I intend to email the details of this book to parents of autistic children I know. I believe it to be a must read for all parents and professionals associated with autism.

Thank you Stephanie!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative to Psychotherapeutic Medicines.......2003-01-07

Being a parent of an autistic 14 year old, this book has been a lifesaver. We are doing one of the options that is listed in the book after much research. The book triggered an option that we have not considered before. Our son has been aggressive since starting puberty. The natural medicine alternatives is allowing us to wean him off his medicines. I have been a PICU nurse for 22 years and believe in the medical field. As a mom who has tried everything, I believe in the alternatives especially if they work. All medicines have untoward side effects and never a cure. I wish this book was written ten years ago when our son was young for him to have a chance of full recovery. A must read book for everyone with a child with autism.

1 out of 5 stars Natural Genius Is A Very Disappointing Book.......2007-06-27

As a mother of a son with Asperger's I thought this book would be highly informative. Instead I found the mother to be completely self absorbed and I could not relate to her at all. She never discussed the toll her son's condition took on her marriage, the monetary cost of this condition, any therapies she tried for her son and various other topics that all parents of a child with a disability ask themselves. There weren't even any quotes from the child so we could see what was possibly going through his mind. There was nothing uplifting about this book and I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Long & Winding Road.......2007-06-25

This is one of the best accounts by a parent of a child with Asperger's that I have EVER read! Ben Rubinyi was born on October 14, 1986 when autism/Aspeger's (a/A) spectrum awareness was just taking off. A gifted child whose parents were also blessed with high intellect, Ben was raised in a bilingual household. He was fluent in French and English. He is also a skilled and natural musician with excellent taste - he is a Beatles' and Woody Guthrie fan!

I loved it when author Susan Rubinyi shared how she and Ben loved Bill Staines and found spiritual comfort in his music. I have seen Staines perform and he is truly special.

Ben's early behavior did not sound like severe spectrum behavior from the telling. He was literal in his speech; by the time he started school, he would simply leave to find his father who taught in a nearby building. Educated in French and American schools, the brilliant boy with the flair for languages showed a typical autistic pattern in referring to himself as "tu" (French for 'you') when meaning himself. In some ways, Ben's thinking was described as rigid.

After several years of wrangling and wrestling with the Oregon school district in which he was a student, Ben's mother tried other methods, including home schooling. A gifted music teacher named Dave entered their lives as her marriage was coming to an end and Ben's aides were presenting challenges of their own, including one aide who betrayed the family by acting as a school district "double agent." Dave, also a Beatles' fan introduced Ben to Beatles conventions and it was at the 2001 Beatles convention that Ben got to shine.

Ben's behavior reached crisis proportions in 1998 when he was obsessed with tearing leaves off of trees to "make the seasons go by faster." He would even try to get out of the car to follow this passion and went so far as to demolish a neighbor's trees. Sadly, this behavior led to Ben serving two hospital sentences after 4 horrifying episodes in emergency rooms. The treatment Ben was subjected to was appalling. The second sentence he served was at Los Angeles' NeuroPsychiatric Institute.

Once he served his sentence there, he was educated in Los Angeles. Susan Rubinyi had an ambivilent relationship with her native city, leaving at an early age with no intention of ever returing. Ironically, her Long & Winding Road led her back to her girlhood home. In time, she makes peace with her past and with Ben's uncertain present. The two, like John Lennon learn to "Give Peace a Chance." Ben's love of maps led to a job making films; Susan learned about other components of her life, including spiritual as well as intellectual. The two Come Together on their Long & Winding Roads. Through the use of skilled therapists and brilliant interpretations of their dreams (which makes me think of "Number 9 Dream" by John Lennon), the components of their lives; new adustments, e.g. end of a marriage and moving out of state do Come Together as they get by with a little help from their friends.

I loved Ben's insights; this brilliant young man with the extraordinary memory is truly a gift and a mitzvah. The Beatles were good for Ben; their music helped remove rigid mental walls in his thinking. For example, Ben was able to shift from playing one song to another when an unexpected change in plans came up. He also gave a well thought out answer for how he got into the Beatles at age 10. I just loved that part!

I loved the part where he regaled audiences at the Beatles' convention with his brilliant, flawless playing and the talk he gave to people about his experience with Asperger's. One of my favorite parts in the book was when Susan Rubinyi said that by following your child's special interests, you just might tap into talents and interests you didn't know you had or had been lying dormant.

This book is a Godsend, a mitzvah and one everybody needs. Like the Beatles said in 1967, "All You Need is Love" and I just LOVE this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-05

I found this to be a very honest and engaging account of the challenges involved in raising a young person with Asperger's. Particularly striking was the difficulty of working with the public schools. As well as how to treat what is 'neuroatypical' as a gift. I have nothing but compassion and respect for this Mother who has devotedly helped her son and now all who read this memorable book.

    Book Description

In this user-friendly book, parents learn revolutionary common sense techniques for raising successful children with disabilities. When we recognize that disability is a natural part of the human experience, new attitudes lead to new actions for successful lives at home, in school and in communities. When parents replace today's conventional wisdom with the common sense values and creative thinking detailed in this book, all children with disabilities (regardless of age or type of disability) can live the life of their dreams. Readers will learn how to define a child by his or her assets - instead of a disability-related "problem," and how to create new and improved partnerships with educators, health care professionals, family and friends.

Thanks to my friends who chased me down and forced me to take a look at the damage I was inflicting upon my children, we have rediscovered the joy of one another. Life is wonderful. Children are awesome. Disability is natural.

Take the time to read Kathie's fantastic book and leave chronic land ... you know the place ... thinking 10 years ahead ... worrying about every moment ... trying to "fix" that disability ... IEP battles ... say, "Goodbye" to Therapist Mom, Legal Pro Dad, and Peer Mentor Friends. Rediscover your child and reclaim your lives. Really!

5 out of 5 stars essential reading for all therapists.......2004-01-30

As a physical therapist I am thrilled to find a text that reflects the philosophy of my organisation. And the fact that it is written by a parent of a child who has a disability is even more exciting - someone who has expeience as a consumer of "the system" that insists on inflicting therapy sessions on kids, regardless of their needs.
Snow's book is a breath of fresh air. The entire book is full of excellent comments and advice. It should be a compulsory text for all paediatric therapists, (not to mention teachers) whether they work in a clinical or school setting.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Kathie Snow.......2003-01-26

Kathie Snow is one of those rare writers whose every word I hang on to. By redefining my child she recreated my family. Her book has permanently and positively influenced the way I view people with disabilities. I check her website, ...on a regular basis. Visitors on this website can sign up to recieve her free email newsletter. Periodically hearing from Kathie is always a joyous event. I have a child with a significant disability and my journey has not always been easy. Thank you, Kathie Snow, for helping me along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Not a 'Must Read' Book ,but a 'HAVE TO READ' Book!.......2002-11-11

Finally ONE book that has it all! Thisis a MUST READ for all parents of children with disabilities!

I have ordered so many books that didn't deliver the content that I was looking for. The reviews, the synopsis were grossly exaggerated or just plain wrong.

BUT Disability is Natural is different! I am going to require (or try to) my son's future teachers to read `Disability is Natural' over the summer break. I am going to encourage every one of you to order and read this book as soon as possible. Not only will it inspire you, it will give you the tools you have been seeking!

Not only does Kathie Snow accurately chronicle the history of disability, the current situations with our special education system and a variety of professional and parental attitudes that affect our children for a lifetime, she then provides the means for preventing history from repeating itself, changing the system, and changing our attitudes as well as other's attitudes.

One paragraph that intimately touched me discusses what happens to our children when we have `had enough' of the Special Education System and decided `I quit.' Her estimation is this happens around middle school and high school...I see the burnout occurring much much sooner in many cases, and potentially my case also (until now!)
I will excerpt this paragraph here:
"When we've given up advocating, the dangers to our children are great. The middle and high school years are crucially important: they're the springboard for our children entering the adult world of work or post-secondary education. We desperately want out of they system, but since we quit advocating, we must go to the experts for vocational help. At some point, we may no longer have to deal with the system anymore, but our children will. Sadly, if we haven't prepared them for SELF-ADVOCACY, they'll be at the mercy of the experts."

Now, she doesn't just lecture us on `how we should be thinking' she gives us to tools on `HOW TO DO IT!"

The book turns full circle from the history, where we are today, then HOW
to successfully take our children into adult-hood and independence.

Kathie helps us explore the natural resources in our community, what are they, how do we get them to work? (another excerpt) "When we use the system, we have to follow the rules of the system. We must take the single path (eligibility and red tape)... ...In community there is not just one path to take, there are many. There are no rules, no passwords, no gatekeepers. In community, we get what we want and need using the same methods as others: using the existing resources in our cities and towns, depending on friends, networking, calling on old connections and making new ones, offering to give, being creative, thinking out of the box, and being both flexible and persistent."

You will find practical things that you can actually DO. If your teachers read this book, hopefully their attitudes will change because they will be able to see where we have been, in a different perspective than "I don't need any more work." Perhaps they will feel empowered to `change the system' and we can actually form a team!

There are three sections of the book:
    The Way Things Were
    The Way Things Are
    The Way Things Can Be

Under the heading of `The Way Things Can Be' there are 11 chapters, I will list their titles here: `A New Paradigm' `People First Language' `Transformation' `Self-Determination' `Tools for Success: Meeting Needs and More' `Natural Lives in Community' `The Early Years' `Inclusive Education: Blueprint for Success' `Homeschooling, Unschooling, Alternative Education' `Bright Future for Teens and Young Adults' `Promoting Positive Images' Leadership and Influence'.
These chapters provide the `How To' tools to raise successful children with disabilities. She frequently mentions stories of children with Down syndrome in the book as well as other different abilities.

There is a thorough Appendix at the end of the book that lists Disability Organizations from all over the country.

So, finally a book that has it all under one cover...yes it is over 600 pages long, and I haven't been able to put it down since it arrived last week! Covering therapy, assistive technology, education, life in the community, and finally leadership (every Disability-Related Organization's employees and Board Members should read this chapter)
I will end with a quote from the back cover of the book, "Bright futures are possible for babies, children, and young adults with disabilities. Let's dream big dreams for our kids and turn those dreams into realities, STARTING NOW!"

I've been through it all. My low back pain didn't respond to the physiotherapist. My primary care didn't think it to be HIS problem. After weeks of complaints he finally passed me on to the orthopedic guy who wanted to fuse all of my spine bones. The second opinion of the neurosurgeon was to do nothing at all. Then I was back at square one until I read this book. Michelle's guidance and calm reassurance pointed me in directions I had never considered. I don't believe in magic and I think that most of the things that my friends and my doc says are crap, but Michelle got me through the worse times of my life. GET THIS BOOK IF YOU HURT!!!!! My review could have been THAT short.

      Book Description

Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster of staggering proportions. The vicious winds and surging seas that lashed the Gulf Coast on August 31, 2005, paralyzed New Orleans and left a scene of utter devastation in their wake.

But when the winds and waves abated, they revealed an unnatural disaster — a social catastrophe directly caused by the government's callous indifference to the needs of the region's most vulnerable residents. This pattern of near-criminal government neglect did not begin with its response to Katrina, but the hurricane did lay bare its extraordinary depth and horrifying consequences, exposing how race and class can spell life or death in contemporary America.

In the months that followed, The Nation published a series of articles and editorials documenting the gross negligence of the Bush administration and the heroic effort of community organizers and ordinary citizens to put their city back together again, as well as the attempts of political progressives to push for a 'New Deal.'

Unnatural Disaster includes riveting on-the-scene reporting, columns, blogs, essays and articles from Mike Davis and Anthony Fontenot, Naomi Klein, Patricia Williams, Jeremy Scahill, Eric Alterman, Adolph Reed, Jr., Eric Foner, Curtis Wilkie, Billy Sothern, among many others.

      Book Description

Sometimes the most unlikely heroine can become an inspiration

Every year the geese return. Honking and flapping, they always land in groups. But this spring something is different: an injured goose stands on one leg – alone. Shunned by the other geese, she is unable to search for food, swim, or fly away. A young girl watches and wonders how a goose with one foot can survive. She wants to feed her, take care of her, be her friend. But her mother warns that “a wild goose has to learn to live with her weakness. Or she won’t live at all.” It takes patience and courage for both goose and girl to let nature take its course.

Told from a child’s point of view, and based on a true story, this simple, telling, and triumphant picture book is wonderfully illustrated in the bold paper-collage art of Holly Meade.

"Henry hears the honking first. He circles the pond, around and a half, sending up splashes of warm spring mud all over his winter coat. Henry knows the geese are coming. And then I know it, too..." This is the best time of year for our young narrator, as the Canada geese arrive back at her family's pond, each spring. But this year she notices one of the geese has a badly injured foot, and when she visits the pond the next day, the goose's foot is gone. There she stands all alone, separated from the rest of the flock. The other geese have shunned her. "I never thought geese could be so mean." The little girl wants to take care of the poor footless goose, feed her, pet her, be her friend, but her mother and father warn her not to. "A wild goose has to learn to live with her weakness. Or she won't live at all." As the summer slides towards autumn, the little girl notices that the goose has grown stronger and more capable. It can balance and hobble on its stump, search for food, and swim. But she still worries that the goose won't be strong enough to push off and fly south for the winter, and will be left behind to die. And then one day when she comes home from school, all the geese are gone, and so is her little crippled friend. The winter months pass and the girl thinks often of the goose, and then one spring day, soon after she spots the first robin, she hears the familiar honking. "They land together. A couple of geese. Honking and flapping. Drinking and bathing. Combing each other's feathers. One is larger than the other, his neck as thick as a fire hose when he stretches it out to protect her-the goose with one foot..." Inspired by an actual event, Cari Best's touching and captivating story, as seen through the eyes of a grade school girl, is filled with drama, courage, determination, and triumph. Her engaging and evocative text is complemented by Holly Meade's bold and vibrant paper collage illustrations, that bring the wonders and wildness of nature to life. And together, word and art paint a vivid, empathetic, and uplifting portrait of an unlikely and endearing heroine. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Goose's Story is a heartwarming tale of nature and survival, and is definitely one of the best new picture books of 2002.
