4 out of 5 stars knowledge is power!!!!!!.......2007-09-22

I did not follow the book to the word, but I sure did pick up some tips that have really helped. I thought my baby hated to be swaddled, because she would kick off the blanket all the time, the book stated that babies like to swaddled, so I gave it another shot, this time swaddling her in the front and in back, so she was more secure, and it really worked!!! That alone was worth the buy. Plus I learned how to read her signals that she was tired. If you pick up a tip here and there from a book it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars It worked for me..........2007-09-21

GENERAL COMMENT: Like every baby book I read, I try to keep an open mind. You will NOT find a book that will work for ALL babies but this book worked for mine, who I think is a text book baby.

SITUATION: I was going back to work and my baby was super needy at 6 weeks-- wanted to be helded all the time. He won't nap if I wasn't holding him. And at night, I would rock him to sleep and put him into his crib very very gently when he has fallen into DEEP sleep. Otherwise, he would CRY. But that was my fault because I HELD him alot. This would be fine if I was a stay at home mom...but if even I was, I think it would have taken it's toll on me at some point.

LIKE: I like this book because it helped with getting my baby on a good routine, nap longer, sleep on his own, and sleep longer through the night. I made my own version of the EASY plan, customize it to my baby and what worked for me...this book afterall is not the BIBLE.

RESULTS: By about 8-10 weeks, he was sleeping from 7:30-8 pm to about 4:30 am (with 1 dream feed). Now at 5 months, he sleeps from 8pm to about 7am (with 1 dream feed). He use to nap about 30 minutes at a time. After the plan, he started napping for 2 hours (slightly shorter now since he is older). He LIKES his crib and falls to sleep in about 20-30 minutes of laying down...without ANY fuss. And he is a happy healthy little boy who is 50% for weight and 80% for height.

TRANSITION PERIOD: This didn't happen overnight. I would try for a week or two and revisit the book about a thousand time to make sure I wasn't doing it wrong. He would progess and go back to his old self and progress some more. After about 2 weeks, I customize the plan. You WILL be glad to get some time for yourself and hubby when the baby goes down to sleep in the evening instead of at night. He sleeping pattern gradually falls into place. I don't believe in cry it out so the SHH/PAT worked for me. It was hard and I gave up several times. But it worked before you know it. Just give it your best try and be PATIENT AND CONSISTENT. Even now when he takes a little longer to get to sleep, I still PAT/SHH and he is out.

DON'T LIKE: The tone of the author can be a bit annoying (KNOW IT ALL) but after all, she is a super nanny and have worked with THOUSANDS of babies. This book made me PARANOID as a parent--thinking that I would just ruin my child if I made any wrong moves. But we all turned out okay and our parents didn't have this book.

CONCLUSION: Your instinct as a mom is truly the best guide but sometimes, it does get you into situations that are difficult to overcome. This book helped me better manage my baby's sleep/eating which are the biggest parts of his life. Life is so much less HECTIC for MOM, BABY and DAD.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO "CRY IT OUT!".......2007-09-09

I'm on my 2nd child, my first slept though the night from early age, and was a very easy baby to care for. But my 2nd baby was a different story! According to the BW, he is Spirited. This book helped me to help him to take regular naps and be on a good routine, with NO crying it out alone in the crib. (He is 6 months old). I read Babywise book before this one and found it WAY too strict for my spirtied boy. We are still working on sleeping through the night, but i have hope that we can accomplish that soon!

4 out of 5 stars Good common sense.......2007-09-03

I didn't like the idea of "recipe" parenting, but some of Ms Hogg's tips worked very well on our 5-month old, who is now sleeping 11-12 hours every night. I like her approach to behavioral issues, especially in toddlers. The tone is quite condescending, but if you can get past that, its a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Andrew & Kim.......2007-08-27

I'm actually on Amazon today because I'm going to buy this for a colleague who is having her first baby. This book was absolute lifesaver. Like most new parents we had absolutely no idea what the baby wanted and way too much old school advice from well-meaning friends and family. We agreed to try this book for two weeks and there was never a question as to how great the advice was.

We agree with some of the other reviews about the author's tone. Fortunately, you cannot argue with the results. Her methods were spot on accurate and our children immediately adapted to the EASY schedule.

Thanks Tracy!

5 out of 5 stars Emotional Development of Children.......2003-01-20

Illogical to assume that a child's psychological and emotional development are not patterned as infants from the first day, and that his or her outlook and life attitudes of emotive responses are created by parental attention and attentive encouragement, this book is a long time overdue. Acknowledging this fact, and considering labor issues which remove parents from the household so much that this vital process is minimized threatens each infant born and promising to erode the value of human interaction and harmonious potential in all human resources areas. Valuable time, effort and progress which once lost is not recoverable is enormously important to America and to each country in the development of humans and their treatment of one another. Robotic clones without the emotions of compassion, guilt, empathy or sympathy can only promise a hard-hearted society, a direction of high risk detrimental to everyone of all ages in all capacities. This is a very much ignored area of human relations that addresses all of the social system involving mental health and the subsequent poor physical health that inevitably follows.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fabulous book!.......2002-02-06

As the mother of a now nineteen-month-old, I highly recommend this book. For the first eighteen months, this and the AAP's book were all I needed. I liked the blend of research and advice explained in an easy-to-read and nonjudgemental format. While some may find the book overly general, frankly, I already knew how to change diapers and stuff, and I prefer the approach of being told what is happening developmentally with my child at a given moment and then letting me decide what to do with the information. There are some very good suggestions for what sorts of stimulation a child needs at various ages, and they're nice to use for launching points. Having made it all the way through the stages in the book, I can say that their advice helped my son become the happy, well-adjusted toddler he is today.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent with a newborn should read this book!.......1999-03-16

This is a fascinating and very readable guide on early learning and emotional growth for the parents of newborns through 18 months. Using the latest research, the internationally renowned Rameys discuss how infants adapt, learn and grow, both intellectually and emotionally. Right From Birth contains examples of proven benefits, the Seven Essentials, that parents can give to their children beginning at birth that will result in permanent developmental benefits. It also contains many practical suggestions on parenting that are easy to understand and apply. They are presented in simple formats such as What Parents Should Do. This book considers everything from an infantss personal style to elements of growth to what to expect. It covers teaching, daily routine, language development, outside care, appropriate activities, and a myriad of other important elements and milestones in an infants development. If you are the parent of a newborn, this should be must reading for you! Start Right From Birth to give your child the best head start for development!

5 out of 5 stars A nice blend of research and common sense advice!.......1999-02-10

The Rameys have crystallized a lot of research and have given prudent advice on the importance of building your child's foundation in their infant years. This book is easy to read and nicely laid out so that busy parents can learn a lot even if they browse for only a few minutes. It has earned a spot on our library shelf next to Dr. Spock!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and enjoyable, but disappointingly generalized........1999-01-28

This book is an excellent read for parents who are ignorant of child development, or for those who still are depending on regimented ideas from the past before so much was known about how babies learn. As a new grandma, and a teacher who specialized in early childhood development years ago, I was expecting to learn something new. I didn't.

5 out of 5 stars A Realistic and Practical Guide to Feeding Kids Right.......2000-05-02

I'm giving this wonderful book as a gift to all my friends who are starting families. It is packed with practical information about how we parents can manage to get the best, most nutritious foods into our kids.

It covers all the developmental stages - from infancy, into the "finicky eater" years, and through the teens, when high-fat, low-nutrient fast foods seem to hold the most allure.

Dr. Goldberg gives a wealth of easy-to-understand information on kids' basic nutritional needs and also debunks long-held assumptions about the real value of some popular dietary stand-bys (like peanut butter). I really appreciate all the practical advice he gives here. He not only tells parents what's best, he explains why. So, rather than simply preaching breastfeeding to new mothers, he gives sound, compelling reasons why infants benefit most from mother's milk.

As a pediatrician and parent, Dr. Goldberg seems to understand the practical problems we all face in actually getting our kids to eat what's good for them. The temptations of high-fat high-carb fast foods are all around us. Taking all that into consideration, he provides lots of easy, delicious recipes that we can make for kid's meals, school lunch boxes, and snacks. You can tell he appreciates good food himself - there are no dry, gritty or bland "health foods" on the menu. He names brands here, too - some products to avoid and some that can enhance a healthy, delicious diet kids (and parents)will actually want to eat.

Thumbs up on this one for its wise and parent-friendly advice!

3 out of 5 stars Not for the easily Frightened!.......2005-07-14

My husband and I recently decided to begin trying to have a baby. We decided to buy this book along with a couple others so that we could prepare. This was one of the 1st books that I read and after about the first half, I was convinced that I would be infertile and unable to have a baby. Some of the information is very good but a good proportion of the book covers the plethora of things that can cause a woman to be infertile and then all of the latest medical treatments that can help an infertile woman get pregnant. This might be a great book for the woman who has been trying for a while without success but for me, I finished it and was scared to death!

    3 out of 5 stars Overkill!.......2003-10-29

This book provides some wonderful information, in a very easy-to-digest format. The section on the pre-conception exam is great- you'll know what to expect, and how to make sure your doctor isn't overlooking something important. I also liked the attention on male fertility issues, which are often ignored. However, the first half of the book is esentially "you could be infertile, and not even realize it!" It describes the fertility problems caused by cysts, endometriosis, etc., and lists the very common symptoms (gee, who hasn't had headaches or heavy periods?) and stresses how frequently women have these diseases without realizing it. Halfway through the book, I was convinced I had every problem listed. The authors' approach may be helpful if you're having difficulty getting pregnant and want to educate yourself on possible causes, but I think for most people it's really overkill.

    5 out of 5 stars Well..........2001-07-07

Ordered it....1 week later it came, I opened the box while my wife was doing the ept exam, two lines appeared, never read the book. One month later, gave it to my brother since his wife is trying to get pregnant. She says its pretty good.

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative..........2001-02-27

My husband and I purchased this book while we were undergoing fertility treatments for "unexplained" infertility. The doctors had no other explanation for why two otherwise healthy people would be having problems conceiving naturally. I found this book full of information in laymen terms without all the medical jargon which can be boring and hard to understand. I wanted to be a better informed patient and be able to make responsible decisions regarding what treatments we were going to have. Getting Pregnant tells us about environmental factors, personal habits, and all the treatments that's available as well as general information for couples who are not experiencing infertility. I was surprised to read some of the unfavorable comments left by other readers. It is extremely draining physically and emotionally having to deal with infertility and everyone should take what they read with a grain of salt. I am happy to say that we had a beautiful baby girl while waiting for an IVF cycle and I guess that's where the "unexplained" comes in again. In all this book is well worth the read.

3 out of 5 stars Would not recomend this couples just beginning to try.......2000-09-10

I thought the book was ok but not really geared for couples just starting to try to conceive as it claims to be. There are a few helpful suggestions on baby making but most of the info is about the many things that can possibly be wrong with you or your spouse to cause you NOT to conceive and about medical treatments available.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-06-16

Very informative and beautifully illustrated, this is the best book on breastfeeding that I have seen. It is full of useful information on positioning and other basics. Shares the personal experiences of breastfeeding mothers, and has a great section for trouble shooting. Clearly explains the importance of both foremilk and hindmilk, and how to ensure your baby receives both.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!!.......2007-03-06

This is by far the very BEST breastfeeding book I have ever read. It has TONS of actual pics of mommas breastfeeding their children and that is so helpful. Most breastfeeding books generally only have drawings of breastfeeding moms and babies, and while that is ok it is not always helpful. This book is so amazing. I was unsuccessful in nursing my first daughter, and I really think it was from lack of support and knowledge in what I was doing. This book is so informative, so helpful and full of encouragement. Its like your own personal support system in a book. I know I will be 100% successful breastfeeding my next little one. : )

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2006-11-11

I extremely enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to anyone planning on breastfeeding!

If you're going to breastfeed, and especially if you aren't planning on taking a short course in it at the hospital, I'd say this is a fine substitute. It basically covers nearly everything you need to know, from the physical aspect of how breastfeeding works, to how you properly do it, to common mistakes.

I, myself took the class my hosptial offered so a lot of this book was repetition for me. And, while the first few days I had a very hard time, after that it was smooth sailing. However, I did have some questions about things my baby was doing once in a while and was concerned, I thought maybe the book could help. Had I had this book at home already from day 1, I think I could have gotten more use out of it, since I was having latch-on issues (then). The book covered this in great detail, I don't think you could ask for a better book from that aspect- latch-on, how to know if baby has had enough, how to position yourself/baby etc. Anyway, the concerns I was having, and I'm sure a lot of moms have different issues once things are going well but then something pops up- the book didn't help me with. One main thing I think I would have liked more help with would be how what you're eating affects baby, and when your baby has bad gas problems. I know a lot of moms have problems with this, as well as fussy times, and we often wonder if it's something in our milk and what we can do about it...So while I feel the book is missing a few things and/or should have gone into greater detail about certain things; I'm still convinced this is one of the best books out there.

Overall, if you are going to breastfeed, get this book! It's awesome to have on hand, it also covers things like common myths and has some case studies of women who had different difficulties. The price for this book is so reasonable and I think what it gives you is priceless!

5 out of 5 stars WAS having problems..........2006-05-31

I spoke with a lactation consultant at the hospital before I was released with my first daughter, and thought I had breastfeeding down pat. Boy was I wrong! I was really sore in no time and had a lot of frustration. I was hesitant to go to the consultant again for fear of being judged by such a "pro". I bought this book, took it's advice of having my husband compare what I was doing to the book and poof! my problem was recognized and solved! I would recommed this book to anyone who is having problems breastfeeding but really wants to continue to try it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the reason for my successful breastfeeding!.......2006-04-11

I failed to get my son to successfully latch and breastfeed 3 years ago because I really had no idea how to hold him and how to help him latch correctly. This book taught me how to do both and now I am successfully breastfeeding my daughter!!! This book has many excellent photos and tips for breastfeeding. My only complaint is that it doesn't address moms going back to work and/or pumping.

Children are a joy to parents. But they can also be a source of frustration and anxiety. Knowing why children think and act the way they do is the key to understanding their bewildering behavior. This is the best remedy for the stress that so many parents experience and the best guarantee of raising happy, well-adjusted, responsible children. Using the proper techniques, successful child rearing becomes easy.

Unlike many parenting guides, this book is not simply a compilation of techniques to apply in specific situations. Instead, Dr. Raskin divulges the reasons behind your child's behavior and the developmental hurdles your child will face at each stage of development. Only by understanding what is actually happening within your child can you make sense of the behavior and respond in the best way.

Your Child's Success Begins with You covers every significant issue parents face as they progress with their children through the first five years. In addition to the garden-variety hassles such as nighttime awakening, feeding problems, temper tantrums, and toilet training that so frequently confuse and frustrate parents, this book also discusses an array of other important topics, including the trauma of divorce and how to minimize it, the problems of the working parent, how to teach responsibility, issues related to sexual identity, and preparation for school. These techniques work!

Dr. Raskin is a child psychiatrist with four decades of experience. This book is the culmination of his experiences with young children and their interactions with their parents. For forty years he has helped parents use this information with consistent success.

I was so impressed with this book I bought 10 copies. I've sent five to my brothers/sisters and given 5 to colleagues who are new parents. So far their appraisal agrees with mine, 5 stars plus.

This is probably the most important investment you could make in a child's future.

        5 out of 5 stars a women's history masterpiece.......2003-08-06

This historical work is truly skillful because it focuses on female leaders in reproductive rights and health other than Margaret Sanger. Before reading this book, I was unaware of the many other figures in reproductive health's history, but Rosen uncovers these figures and illustrates why their lives and actions were so important to this historical topic. A must read for women's studies' classes and any person who is interested in this aspect of women's (and society's) history.

Robyn Rosen explores this topic masterfully. This book is sure to be a must read for women's history classes everywhere. Rosen is an academic historian with a dramatic and dynamic writing style. I highly recommend this book.
