Disappointed in shipping condition..........2007-10-08
I have purchased many items from Amazon and this is the first complaint. We bought this very expensive book set for our grandson as a birthday gift. The 13 books came in its own display box which was severly damaged in shipment. His Birthday was this weekend and had to give the gift before retuning it. For the price of books and not even free shipping they should have been packaged more securely.

I think the series of unfortunate event is really good because the author tell the story in a fun way, unlike other stories, this book is really exciting. When I finish a chapter, I want to keep reading on because I wanted to know the ending quickly. I really like the character - violet on this story, she is really smart and calm all the times. I think the ending is really cool because it did not exactly tell us what happen, it leave us space for us to think

Klaus is the one who is hand with words. Sunny is just good at biting. Then their uncle who is after their fortune their parents left them. He is very mean and will mar4ry violet for her money. If she doesn't sine sunny dies. Will she sine or not read the book and find out.
I liked the book because it is entertaining and because you never know what will happen next. Also because it is full of mystery. Last because there is always an answer for your question. I hope you read the book "A series of unfortunate event book one."

I have read a lot in my ten years of life,but out of all those books,A Series Of Unfortunate Events have been the best. Some of it is funny, some of it is scary, and some of it is a little weird. If you mix that all together, you get 13 wonderful books. I wouldn't reccomend it for kids under 10 though, because like I said it is scary, although it's not always as scary as Lemony Snicket says it is. Some of it is a little violent, actually. Other than that they are great books. Oh, and people have been complaining about how some of the pages are uneven. That is how they are supposed to be! The End still leaves you with some questions, but when you find out the answer to a question your like, "O MY GOSH! VFD!"! And some times Lemony Snicket does something very unexpected, like in the 6th book when Esme Squalor pushes them down the dark elevator shaft, the next 2 pages were nothing but black, which was very scary because then I was reading in the car at night with no light but my book light. There are 2 reasons I am going to stop now. Reason #1: That is pretty much all you need to know, and Reasom #2 My hands ache from typing for 20 minutes strait. BYE BYE AND HAPPY READING!! :)

As a mom of special needs kids, I loved this book! It's from the perspective of a typical sister, which is a nice perspective. The book also shows how loving the sister can be, which is a wonderful change from most books, on any subject. A lesson from the book can be that no matter how frustrated you are, you can still be nice.

This is a wonderful book about a girl's life dealing with her struggle to be normal with a pretty profoundly autistic younger brother. She really works hard to be honest with herself, and is not always successful. Unlike a lot of children's books, this one even has an ending I can live with. It's touching without being saccharine, satisfying without being overly neat and tidy. Just a wonderful book with great characters (including the parents, who veer from the stock set appearing in most children's books).

Cynthia Lord has created a wonderful, endearing and entertaining story that opens up discussion for so many life lessons. Working with kids with autism, I welcome with open arms this enjoyable teaching tool. I would recommend this as required reading for kids from 4th grade all the way through 7th. I think the characters are realistic and they teach from the heart. It is a good tool for teaching kids (and adults) about taking the extra step to learn more about those around us. I loved the relationship between Catherine and Jason and enjoyed "watching" Catherine create new words for Jason which opened up his world a bit more. Kudos to Ms. Lord on her Newbery Award. Education, compassion and understanding are lessons this book offers. Sometimes people laugh when they like you. But sometimes they laugh to hurt you.
Some people think they know who you are, when really they don't.
Catherine would rather live like a normal person. It's hard enough putting up with her autistic brother, but with a potential friend next door, she feels even more embarrassed about him. And there's Jason, another potential friend. Do you think Catherine can make friends with them without letting her brother get in the way of her? (you have to read Rules to find out)
Rules takes place somewhere on the mainland close to the ocean, during recent times. Catherine is an artistic person and is used to covering up for her brother, David, but only to a certain point. She is patient enough with David but isn't willing to take full responsibility over him. Catherine doesn't really like going out in public with David because she hates the funny looks people give him (he goes around quoting Frog and Toad and his rules). however, she feels all right about him in the end. Catherine has made a bunch of rules for both her and David to follow.
David seems to always be shouting out random things, but what he says has some hidden meaning that only Catherine can understand. David goes to a therapy class/OT. He needs constant reminding to "chew with his mouth closed" or "keep his pants on in public". David doesn't understand that some people are trying to tease him and aren't laughing with him.
Jason is paraplegic and can't speak. He has to use a communication book with words in it so he can converse with others. He's pretty much like "normal" people his age in personality, but is probably more observant than others due to his disability. Jason goes to the same therapy center as David.
Jason has been going to OT before David, but only then did Catherine really notice him. His mom caught her sketching him, and that is how they got to be friends. Kristi, who would probably become really popular, moves in next door to Catherine. Catherine really doesn't want her to know about David, but she finds out anyway and their relationship doesn't get to a good start. She makes an effort to make friends with Kristi but she seems to like this guy who Catherine dislikes. Catherine gets closer to Jason but when the community center holds a dance, she uses her rules as excuses to hide behind.
I really enjoyed this book, and in some ways I could relate to the characters in it. Being an older sister, I knew how Catherine felt dealing with david. I learned not to judge people by the way they act or look because they could be a totally different person on the inside ("don't judge people by their covers") and not to restrain yourself with tons of rules. David couldn't understand what to do or what not to do, so Catherine made all those rules for them (kind of like The Giver, where if you broke one of their many rules you'd get in big trouble). But then she made unnecessary rules for herself that took away some of her freedom. Cynthia Lord's writing style included lots of details and I was able to understand everything. It had some Christian perspective in it, with Catherine opening a lot of opportunities for Jason and showing him the world in a different perspective. She learned that she didn't have to follow all those rules that she made. The pacing is a steady medium with some fast parts. The title is what it is mostly because of all the rules Catherine made. I would recommend this book to anyone in general, because there's not really anything inappropriate in it and I think everyone can relate to at least one character.

This is an award winning book that tells what it's like to be the normal sibling in a family with a special child. The protagonist is realistically drawn and her difficulties protecting her autistic brother from the harsh realities of prejudice and small-minded cruelty will touch your heart. Although targeted for the upper elementary or middle school audience, readers of all ages would benefit from the expressive and moving portrait Cynthia Lord paints of the conflicts faced by the members of families with special kids.

The best parenting book I've ever encountered.......2007-09-13
This book reads like a novel. I literally could not put it down, staying up way past my bed time and paying the price the next day. It describes a multi-week workshop that the author held. Each week there are stories from the parents, ideas from the lecturer, questions, problems, hearts being poured out, family stories, including the tales of the adults (now parents) who survived difficult sibling situations. You get to know some of the people in the workshop, and you live through the ups and downs of applying workshop ideas to their families. You want things to end well and you wait with abated breath for what happens next.
On top of that, the ideas are eye-opening, life-changing and at the same time so obvious! Like, how could I fail to see that?!
Never have I encountered such an excellent read in parenting books, nor, come to think of it, any non-fiction that comes to mind. Just don't start reading it at night! You could be a very cranky mommy in the morning!
Simplistic.......2007-08-30
This book, proposing to teach parents how to raise siblings who don't hate each other and whose adult lives aren't still ruled by childish pain, contains a few gems. I will keep from it several bits of insight as I raise my two kids.
However, I found much of this book far too simplistic. I was turned off by the pages of cartoons that seemed to imply that with one simple phrase from mom or dad, kids would stop fighting and get along. I also found the constant description of the workshop to be distracting and contrived, like the authors were unable to put together a book that answered all of the necessary questions about their methods without having these disembodied voices posing the necessary questions. In creating these voices, too, it seemed it was always the disgruntled man who opposed and questioned everything these enlightened women had to say. The whole writing style struck me as unprofessional.
Overall, this book was decent for skimming, and it left me with a couple of ideas to ponder, but it didn't succeed in dramatically changing my parenting style, and I don't feel like it will end the sibling rivalry in our household. My search for peace continues.

I have 3 children 3 & under and this book really helped me to understand why my children were acting the way they were and gave great insight on ways to help.
What was most helpful was the examples and questions in the first couple of chapters. It was also helpful to understand that children do have strong emotions and need a way to express them.
I read this book at the same time as Kids, Parents and power struggles and they seemed to work together.

Erin Hunter is losing her touch..........2007-10-15
The first series of warriors were the best books i have ever read. Firestar made a very likable main character, with a wide variety of great characters throughout, either challenging him. Tigerstar was a chillingly evil villain, that really made the danger seem real. The second series saw almost all the remaining characters of the first series die, leaving us with some new and not very well developed characters. Brambleclaw was a cool main charcter, and the third person narrative around Bramblepaw in Twighlight and Dawn was almost like seeing what Tigerstar felt when he was trying to take over Thunderclan. But it still wasn't as good as the first series. Now we have another series of Warriors that has went another generation away from Firestar. Actually i was surprised by how much the style of this series was like that of the first one. i think that all of the Warriors books are worth a read, and if Erin Hunter continues to write this way, she may save her novels from coming to a very boring end.

I absolutely LOVED the origional Warriors series. I loved reading about Firestar and Graytripe. I got my paws ( ha ha ) on The New Prophecy and I read each of them. I really did like them, and I enjoyed reading about Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, Leafpool and everybody else. I am patiently waiting for Firestar's Quest and The Secrets of the Clans, hoping they will be a good read. I never bothered to read The Lost Warrior, as my friend said it wasn't good. So I read Warriors: Power of Three. At times, I thought the blind Jaypaw, son of Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight, could be very annoying and mean at times, and that Lionpaw, his brother, was too cocky and was cooking up a Bluestar- Oakheart, Graystripe- Silverstream, Crowfeather- Feathertail, Crowfeather- Leafpool ( this guy has some relationship problems ) and Stormfur- Brook thing with this Heatherpaw from Windclan. Yep, total repeat. Getting old, that subject, if you ask me. And also, Hollypaw- their sister- seems to be the most regular one. Well, it is a nice read, though Erin Hunter seems to have lost a fraction of her touch. Anyways, I'd borrow it from the library instead of wasting twenty dollars on this book. Hope this review helped you!

Okay, I LOVE the origional Warriors books. I sort of liked the New Prophecy books. But this? Let's just say I think Erin Hunter rather lost her touch. Jaypaw is very annoying, and I wonder why can't he be grateful for once? Lionpaw is very cocky. And as for the thing with him and that Heatherpaw? It's a Bluestar- Oakheart, Graystripe- Silverstream, Stormfur- Millie, Crowfeather- Feathertail and Crowfeather- Leafpool ( this guy's got some problems ) thing. I mean, the lovebirds-in-different-clans thig. Hello, Erin Hunter? That's an old subject. Well, to be completely truthful it okay, I thought the idea with Jaypaw blind and with a special connection with Starclan was a neat idaea, but they didn't use it properly. I personally think Hollypaw is the only bright one suddenly. This was a book that was interesting enough to keep my eyes on the page, but not god enough to buy with twenty dollars. My advise- keep your money, borrow it from the library. I just hope that Dark River will be better. Anyways, I hope this review helped you.

I really think that this book kind of created a new writing style for all the series. I mean, there was one for Warriors, there was one for New Prophecy, and there is a new one for this, and I think that it is really good. I really think that the Erin Hunters outdid themselves on this one.

I really liked the new Warriors book! I can't wait until the next book comes out. This book is by far Hunter's best book. Jaypaw, the main character, is angry most of the time because he believes his clanmates think he is weak. Jaypaw, Hollypaw and Lionpaw are the grandchildren of Firestar, Sandstorm, Goldenflower and Tigerstar, from previous books. And they are the children of Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight. Hollypaw becomes the medicine cat apprentice, but then realizes she has special abilities as a fighter just as Lionpaw is a fine hunter and Jaypaw has mysterious powers with StarClan.

Picking up from the final pages of the Pentultimate Peril, this farewell installment to the ridiculously (and deservedly!) popular A Series of Unfortunate Events places our protagonists right where we last left them: on a large, wooden boat in the middle of the ocean, trapped with their nemesis Count Olaf, who has armed himself with a helmet-full of deadly Medusoid Mycelium.
The situation quickly and--this being the Baudelaires--predictably deteriorates. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves tossed in a storm so terrible that our beloved narrator spends four pages describing how he cannot describe it. From this point on, fans of the series' smarty-pants wordplay and acrobatic narrative can rest assured that they're in for more of the same (and how) in this 368-page finale, and Daniel Handler's deadpan Snicket continues to tutor a generation in self-referential humor (including one particularly funny bit regarding three very short men carrying a large, flat piece of wood, painted to look like a living room). Snicket notes, of course, that if you read the entire series, "your only reward will be 170 chapters of misery in your library and countless tears in your eyes."
There's one big question, though, for anyone who's made it through "the thirteenth chapter of the thirteenth volume in this sad history": is the final book a fitting end? That question is probably best-answered by one of The End's most oft-repeated phrases: It depends on how you look at it. Those looking for conclusive resolution to the series' many, many mysteries may be disappointed, although some big questions do get explicit answers. Not surprisingly for a work so deliberately labyrinthine, though, even the absence of an answer can be sort of an answer--and reaction to The End can be something of a Rorschach test for readers. Unsatisfying.......2007-09-24
I had such high hopes for at least a few answers to all the superbly intertwined questions developed in the previous 12 books. Unfortunately, after finishing "The End," very few were truly answered, and a long laundry list of questions remain dangling in the wind waiting for resolution. In fact I feel like this book created more questions than it answered. I can appreciate the author's style and desire to leave some of the resolution up to the reader, but in my opinion, it was too much, and I was left very unsatisfied. After 12 books of building suspense, "The End" is very anticlimactic.
Really fun book to read with children.......2007-08-26
I almost didn't read this book after watching the dreadful movies, but it was recommended, so I gave it a shot. I like to pick fun books and read them with my children. My 8 and 10 year old sons have really enjoyed these books, and it keeps them interested in reading. I have been hooked on Harry Potter, and these books do not captivate my interest anywhere near to the same degree, but they are a really fun series that I have had a great time reading with my kids.
A tacky ending to a great series.......2007-08-25
I've read most of the Series of unfortunate events books twice and after finishing the 12th one, I was very excited for the last to come out. The end of the 12th book sets up a great stage for the series end, were all our burning questions will be answered.
So, I get the 13th one the day it comes out. I read the book non-stop, waiting for the grand finale that will reveal everything.
So what did the ending reveal? nothing good. It really only reveals one thing, and its not even something I would have thought about if they hadn't brought it up. The only redeeming thing about the ending is that count olaf dies, which I'm sure everybody was eager for.
I would rather have Lemony Snicket release a FAQ answering all the mysteries in the series than having read this book
The World is Quiet Here.......2007-08-21
This book is so much more then i can put down. It is all so speachlessly true and powerful. I cried 4 times-and then went into shock! It's like Lemony says my thoughts. It is all so emotional-everything from Beatrice to the RING. V.F.D is expecialy important. I can not think of anything it needs. I promise that this book will be more then anything you have ever read. You won't be disapointed in the least. Please choose to purchase this book. If you don't you'll need help. That way you can learn the mystery of the ring and all of the other secrets that are dangerous to you- rather you know them or not. He warned you from the very bad beginning that it might be more then you can handle.

While I loved the first twelve books, and even reread them all carefully in final anticipation of the thirteenth, I really hated The End. Unbelievably disappointing. So disappointing that I gave away my entire series of first edition hardbacks.

My nearly three year old loves this book--I find him quoting lines out of it when he talks about our new baby on the way. The text and illustrations are simple enough for him to understand and hold his interest. It is very positive and doesn't bring up jealousy issues but rather emphasizes all the good things about being an older sibling. If you are expecting and are trying to prepare your little one for the upcoming arrival then I do recommend this book.

My son loves this book, and it's illustrations. Both of us love Falwell's We have a baby, but this is a good companion to that for any expectant or newly additioned family. I like that this is "big brother" specific, as that is a special title to the only boy in our family who is quite used to being the baby, lol. A good buy.

This book is a perfect fit for the age group specified, and I am very pleased after purchasing it for my nephew after the birth of a baby brother. The pictures are very detailed and colorful, and the illustrator is wonderful. The story is not too long, and not too simplified to be boring for parents to read over and over again.
Sweet Book for Preparing Tots for Baby Siblings!.......2007-03-09
I bought this book for my nephew, who's getting a baby brother this spring. I liked the gentle tone of the book, the fact that it shows Dad doing parenting chores, the fact that it doesn't establish the gender of the new baby, allowing you as the reader to use that as a discussion point (or not), etc. The book would best be used as a jumping-off point for talks about what a new baby in the house means: i.e., "this page shows the baby sleeping in a crib. You slept in a crib when you were a baby. Now you have a big-boy bed, right?" or however you want to handle it. Each page could be used like that, if you wanted to, a few weeks apart, to give the child more time for processing and asking questions. (Caveat: If you're in a single-parent, two-mommy, or two-daddy household, you might get questions about who the second parent is in the picture.)

Zen Shorts is a picture book written and illustrated by Jon J. Muth. But it's also a short story collection. And it's also a philosophy book. And it has a giant panda. Oh, and it is a Caldecott Honor book too.
The story starts when siblings Addy, Michael, and Karl meet Stillwater, a large Panda who wanders into their backyard to retrieve his umbrella. I love the opening scenes of the story. Karl, the youngest sibling, is looking out a window and telling Michael he sees a huge bear. Eventually all of the kids go out and say hello to Stillwater. Addy introduces Karl, who is "shy around bears he doesn't know." I find that phrase so enchanting. This kind of charm continues throughout the book.
The next day Addy meets Stillwater for tea. Then Michael and Stillwater hang out. Then Karl goes swimming with Stillwater.
Each outing is accompanied by an appropriate short story. The first is about a man (panda) who gives a gift to a robber. Another is about a man who knows that luck is a many-faceted thing. The final story is about a monk carrying an unnecessary burden. I'll never explain the stories as well as Muth tells them, so you should just read the book.
The illustrations of Stillwater and the children are beautifully rendered watercolors. The coloring is subtle with quite intricate line work for the drawings. The stories between the "real" story are printed on pastel backgrounds and illustrated with silhouettes so that they have a clearly different look from the rest of the book.
When you're finished you should also check out the afterward which explains the underlying philosophy for each story. (Muth has a lot of Buddhist/Taoist influences.)
This is a great book to read with older children because even if they don't get the philosophy, the stories are approachable and they'll get something from it. (Even youngsters will enjoy the pictures.) It's a great introduction to philosophy, a fact that becomes clear after reading the afterward, for "students" of any age. Muth does an admirable job creating a picture book that children and grownups can enjoy together.

this book has it all, great watercolor paintings (i am a classically trained artist so this is important to me), great story, and meaningfull messages. i read this to my two year old daughter who is a book fanatic and can sit quietly for more than an hour and listen to long stories. for those of you with very small kids who may just be begging to read longer stories hear is some advice 1.don't give up if your child does not sit through the whole book the first time you read it small children, like my daughter, like farmiliar things and sometimes it just takes a few passes for them to reconize and chose a certain story, 2.don't chose to read a book when your child is bubbling over with energy, and 3.with longer stories it can also help to use a lot of inflection and tone to create intrest before your little one starts turning the page. this book is moderate in wording, not super long but not as simple as short verses or ryming stories. this book has a certain eligance to it that reflectes its message. it is just beautiful.

I like to treat my kids with respect and gentleness. Books that help me are a treasure. Jon Muth is a regular source of those kinds of books. Zen Shorts is not overdone or watered down. It is simple and beautiful and useful. It makes great literature more accessible to young folks. It helps parents and kids trying to live a more mindful or aware life.

Finally a children's book that not only entertains but also make the child (at least my son) raise questions and discuss. I picked up the book on a wimp from the return cart in the bookstore and I have enjoyed reading it with my son ever since. We are waiting anxiously for the next Zen book from Jon Muth.

I want to go to New York to see this museum. This book was incredible and I loved the style of writing and the way the story unfolded letting each character have their own voice. I loved the notes at the end from the author. I really could tell she loved these characters and did care about their ever after. Every child should read this book. Twelve year old Claudia Kincaid, is bored with her life - being an "A" student all the time, not having a big allowance, and having to deal with being the only girl and oldest of all her brothers. So, she decides to change things a bit to make them exciting. She takes all her allowance, her brother's allowance, her brother (Jamie) and a trumpet and violin case and heads off on an enjoyable, fun adventure to the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City. There, they take tours everyday, sleep in queens' beds and do whatever they please while being careful not to get caught. One day, they uncover a beautiful, exquisite statue of an angel. As they get to know more about this angel, they find out that it is a mystery. No one knows who actually created this angel. Claudia is determined to find out who the artist is. But will she ever figure it out without getting caught?
This book was full of adventure, and filled determination and concentration. I really enjoyed this book because I felt like I was in the story with the characters through their good and bad times. Konigsburg makes this story become so realistic, it comes to life.
I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good adventure. The plot and setting of Konigsburg's book makes it an incredible, thrilling quest that I am sure you will enjoy! I know I enjoyed it!

E.L. Konigsburg wrote, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a Newberry children or teens book. The book is about two children running away from their house and staying at the Metropolitan Museums of Art. The obstacles they go through to live independently include regrets from going anyway. It reminds you how much you care about your parents. While at the museum the kids find a mysterious puzzle that has clues that to an unexpected conclusion. There are no weaknesses in this book. I read this book because my Aunt is the author. I am not saying this book is good because I am related to the Author but because it is a fantastic and interesting novel. I totally recommend this book to anyone. There is also other books of hers that have won Newberry medals. A movie has been made to go with the book if you are more of a movie kind of guy.

We bought this book for my daughter when she was 13 months old. We read it frequently to her but never knew if she really understood what the whole "new baby at our house" concept really meant. The day day her baby sister was born when she was 18 months old we read the book to her and on the page that says "someone new is at our house, do you know who it is?" she immediately pointed to her new sister. We were so excited to realize that this book had taught her the concept of being a big sister even though she was so young. I highly recommend this book.

This book is so wonderful! We started reading this book to our 2 year old at about 1 month before the baby was born! She LOVED the book and after reading this book she would carry it around the house. She kept on commenting that she was going to have a baby. When baby finally came, she was so excited to tell her that she was the "big sister"!
The baby is now 15 months old and my now 3 year old still loves to read the book and actively particippates and helps Mommy with the baby because she's a "big sister"!
The book talks about something new in our house, a baby. The baby in the book seems to be gender neutral which makes it convenient if you're expecting either a new girl or new boy. There are also some helpful tips for parents on the final page of the book. We highly recommend this book which is an easy read for your toddler.

Good Book. It is wonderful at introducing the concept of a new baby being in the house to a sibling. But this book also emphasizes that the sibling is still special to the parents and it is good to be an older sibling.
