Baseball in times long passed was a very different game, but like today there were some really wild characters to mke the game all the more interesting. The 1934 Cardinals, "The Gashouse Gang" were an exciting, odd collection of great ball payers who played for the love of the game in a way we wish today's players did.

If you love baseball you won't be able to put this down, and even if you don't it will be too intriquing to stop reading once you start. Well written, well researched and as entertaining as anything I've read this season. Highly reccommended!

The Gashouse Gang Personalities.......2007-09-15

This book climbs to the top wrung of my baseball ladder. Rather than a statistical or play-by-play book so common in baseball pages, this features personality development of some of the wackiest players of all time. Learn that Ducky Joe should have been Mean Joe, that Leo the Lip couldn't handle relationships, or that Dizzy Dean was really Jerome or Jay or Hanna or Herman, maybe that he was from Arkansas or Oklahoma or Texas -- well, you get it.

This book captures the thrill of a season and the joy of a team effort. It really makes you think of the Oakland Athletics of the Catfish days.

Just one observation: John Heidenry missed the point of the moniker, "Gashouse Gang." He can't figure out where it came from. He even ponders how "Gas Tank" became "Gashouse." During that day, electricity was provided by manufactured gas plants, sometimes called "witch's brew." The main structure was known as the "gashouse." The working class fellows who toiled away in those dirty gashouses were known as "the gashouse gangs." They cursed, they played dirty and hilarious tricks on each other, they had great and sour dispositions -- necessary to get through the tough days, and yes, their clothes were always filthy. Sound like the beloved Gashouse Gang?

Snag this book, and you will enjoy several hours of quiet time, if you can block out your own laughter.

In baseball, 1934 was a year to remember, a year in which the Saint Louis Cardinals, a scruffy team of misfits and malcontents, came from almost the graveyard to win the National League pennant, and then the World Series. While we learn a tremendous amount about the Cardinals, and especially the Dean brothers, Dizzy and Paul, there are others about whom we receive thumbnail biographies. Most importantly, Branch Rickey is focused upon for much of the early part of the book, and just reading about this remarkable man is sufficient reason to study this book. Other famous players make cameo appearances: Babe Ruth, Mel Otto, Mickey Cochrane, Leo Durocher, and Pie Traynor, with whom I was once priviledged to have an extensive conversation about baseball when I was in college. I also remember listening to Dizzy on the television announcing(?) games and talking about all kinds of extraneous subjects other than the game he was supposed to be calling. Of course, Dizzy is the centerpiece of this book, and he strides through it like a colossus. He did things then that would not be tolerated by a basseball organization today, and perhaps we are the pooorer for not having men such as him (and Curt Flood)to challenge what is considered the "right" way to act as a porfessional ball player. He's gone, and so are all of those famous old-timers, and the world misses them!

Great Father's Day gift.......2007-07-12

I gave this book to my 60 year old father for Father's Day. He hasn't read a book in years but is a huge baseball fan. He loved the book and stayed up late into the night reading it. Great for a Cardinals or baseball fan!

Before I give you the details of this book, let me save some people their valuable time, by telling you who this book would appeal to! Old School Baseball fanatics, "Baseball Historians", Saint Louis Cardinal fans. If you think the designated hitter rule is good for baseball this book isn't for you.

73 years after the famous (To the above listed people.) Saint Louis Cardinals, hereafter known as "The Gashouse Gang", won the World Series, they have had an excellent book released on their exploits and accomplishments. As a self-acclaimed baseball fanatic, some of the statistics, and idiosyncrasies, I discovered in this book about famous old time players that I already knew about, were both interesting and amusing. The author's writing style is not anything you'll remember as out of the ordinary, since so much of the meat of the book, you can tell is repeated from old newspaper articles. But the detailed, meticulous, research should be applauded. As I've mentioned in my earlier reviews, I've read literally hundreds of baseball books, and memorized half the "Encyclopedia Of Baseball" when I was 10 years old, yet I learned even more details and amusing personality "quirks" of some of the old-time stars. I of course already knew that Dizzy Dean was a great pitcher, in the Hall Of Fame, and the last National League pitcher to win 30 games. What I didn't know, but learned here, was the absolute bottom of the barrel poverty he came from in the historically famous "dust bowl"! I knew he was a "wacky" character, but I didn't know, it went to the extent of him literally being the Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, of the baseball world in the 1930's, before there was an Ali. I didn't know that Dizzy held out and boycotted games, in a demand for an increased contract, in the middle of the season. I also got to learn much more about the great Ducky Medwick, (The last National League Player to win the Triple Crown 70 years ago.) who was one of my dear departed Mother's favorite players, when he later played on the Brooklyn Dodgers. I never knew he was such a New Jersey, street fighting, chip on the shoulder, ready to fight anyone, including his own teammates, type of guy! I learned more than I ever had known about what led up to one of the biggest name trades in baseball history, Rogers Hornsby for Frankie Frisch. The detailed background on Branch Rickey, before his famous relationship with Jackie Robinson, was also expertly detailed. The almost blow by blow reporting on the 1934 World Series between the Gashouse Gang and the star studded Detroit Tigers makes you feel like you were there. I could go on and on, but like I said in my opening sentences, these facts, that are exciting and educational to me, would only be exciting to the type of people I described in my opening.

Inspiring Read.......2007-09-19

Erin Gruwell's book motivates teachers to take action. Her persistance is a key to her success. I know many teachers who are just as successful as her in teaching "at-risk" teens. Her story is famous because she turned her class into a product "The Freedom Writers" and marketed them to the world. This allowed her to get funds to finance their educational trips and college years. She was very business savy and a hustler! One of my old college professors (who taught high school English) would constantly ask corporations and local churches for support. It is true the sweaky wheel always gets the grease! Thus, if you are an extremely motivated teacher who works hard in the classroom and networks outside the classroom there are no limits.

I purchased this book and picked it up to read out of obligation for a graduate class. However, once I began reading I could hardly bear to put it down. I could not wait to see what Erin was going to be able to accomplish next. As a high school teacher I was amazed by how dedicated this teacher was. BRAVO

The BEST book on Education!.......2007-08-27

I read the Freedom Writer's Diary, watched the movie, and then read Erin Gruwell's "Teach with Your Heart." I have to say that, by far, this book is the best book I've read on an education related topic! Having taught High School students in California for 4 years and reading countless literature (journals, articles, newspaper, and books), this is one for the ages.

Erin Gruwell's passion, energy, and enthusiasm are extremely contagious. Her commitment to working with and caring for her students is what helped her earned her stripes and gain credibility, for they had become acustomed to being called "stupid" or "worthless" and being brushed off as problem children who many other teachers refused to teach.

The book chronicles her start in education with her student teaching stint, up until her Freedom Writers graduated from Wilson H.S. whereby she then went on to work for the University of California as a professor in the Education training program.

Imagine if each and every teacher emulated the qualities "Ms. G," as she is affectionately called by her former students, possess - what a change there would be in our educational outcomes and learning potentials!!

This is a book which reinforces the belief that every single person can make a difference in this world!

Erin Gruwell shows the world how everyone can make a difference in another's life by just using some imagination and a lot of hard work. Despite her inexperience as a teacher, she had the determination to change her student's lives and did all she could to achieve this goal. A must read for all.

A beautifully-told tale of tragedy...........2007-06-10

I first read AMERICA IS IN THE HEART as a young teenager in high school. Writer Carlos Bulosan goes the semi-autobiographical route to re-examine some of the most painful memories of his life, starting as a youth in the Philippines up to his last days on the West Coast of the United States. Carlos Bulosan, born on November 24, 1913 in Pangasinan, Philippines, came from a very poor background. His family had no choice but to work, collectively, while he and his siblings toiled in the fields of Pangasinan, and abroad in the United States, just so they could [barely] subsist on their earnings and scrap by.

The main character, Allos, must relocate to the United States, to find work in various odd jobs (including the canneries of California and Washington state). He is faced with racism from all sides--Caucasians, exploitative Chinese and Japanese bosses, and just about everyone else. The darker your skin, the harder the discrimination fell on workers of the 1930s and 1940s. This came with strict laws again miscygenation. If you were Filipino, just speaking to a White woman could get you in a lot of hot water. Yet, in the face of all of this pain, Allos becomes involved as a labor organizer and demonstrator for the rights of exploited laborers. What's more, he meets and is reunited with friends and family, over the course of the story, and even finds friendship with a Caucasian woman, Mary.

AMERICA IS IN THE HEART beautifully recounts the pain that faced countless laborers who arrived in the United States to bring in income for their families, in their countries. Many of the passages read like poetry, yet remain very accessable to people for whom the concept of the plight of migrant workers is a fairly foreign concept. Great reading.

Voice to FilAms.......2006-11-26

I first read this book for a Filipino History class at UCLA in 1991. I read it again this year and have appreciated it more. Age and the fact that I re-read it for pleasure this time around can make a difference.... Though I do miss the book discussion at UCLA.

What I love about "America is in the Heart" is that the book gives voice to Filipino Americans, particularly to the forgotten ones from the early part of last century. Just like the Filipino American War, only a few knows about this chapter of American History. The struggles and successes of this group of Filipino men should be heard and this book gives good account of their experiences.

My own thoughts/reflections on America..........2004-09-10

This book tells the story of Allos (or Carlos) Bulosan - from his early days as a peasant child in the Phillipines to his days as an itinerant laborer and reformer for the Filipinos in America. This autobiography reflects the hard life of a persecuted nationality. With no rights to own agricultural land and the risks of being beaten for even conversing with a white women, Filipinos were despised along the West Coast and treated as criminals and monkeys. With no legal recourse or organizations, Filipino workers were often exploited by the contractors and the Chinese and Japanese who owned the gambling houses and whorehouses. This exploitation led many to drinking and violence, only to aggravate the hatred of their kind. Bulosan tells of the brutalities endured by Filipinos at the hands of the white community and of the terrors of disease and unemployment. How many times did Bulosan have to hear "You're fired!" after trying to stand up for himself and his people.

One thing that struck me about the book was the concept of meeting your siblings when you're old enough to remember it. Having grown up with my older sister always at my side, the first scene in which he firsts meets his older brother, Leon seemed very foreign to me. It brought home the point that working families didn't always have the luxury of living together. To survive, each family member had to contribute whether it was working the fields or selling goods in the market, but it meant that the whole family was not united. This family never seemed to be fully together, at least one sibling or parent was always away, trying to do their part. It was hard for me to really relate to that, although I certainly felt for them.

Another concept that I noticed was the sense of time in the book. While Carlos was in America, I never really grasped how much time was passing, and it seemed that Carlos himself didn't either. When reflecting, he often wondered at how many years it had been since he arrived in Seattle. Even after reading the book, I'm not sure exactly of the years that this autobiography covers, although I'm given a few references to historical events and figures. While years seemed to be pass by unnoticed, Carlos writes of an "acute sense of time" because he has to focus on the present just to survive. He writes, "yesterday seemed long ago and tomorrow was too far away. It was today that I lived for aimless, this hour - this moment." That to me was an interesting contrast.

Carlos also wrote of the conflicting visions of America - how it could be so cruel at times, while certain aspects could be so kind. He could not understand the country that terrorized his people, and yet contained some people so willing to help. The violence and pain Carlos experienced made him fear even himself - that he would not be able to contain his rage and would last out. He was afraid of his own brutality, even when he longed for goodness and love in the country of opportunity.

This book is filled with names and places, and it is often difficult to remember exactly who's who or what happened in which city. As Carlos travels all along the West Coast and meets a great many people. Surprisingly to me, his world seems small, as he meets most of his friends and companions multiple times during his travels. Seemingly by chance, he encounters his brothers who came to America before him. Maybe it was vastly different then, but I have a hard time imagining that continuous traveling on the coast would lead you to your family and friends as often as it did for Carlos. However, since the Filipinos were confined to certain districts, I guess it shouldn't be so surprising.

The last parts of the book relate Carlos' experience in trying to organize the Filipino labor movement, and his intellectual emergence as a writer. Throughout this section, Carlos regains his faith in America, as he meets more people fighting for his people and reads dozens of books proving that situations can get better and uneducated people can write the story of their people and their struggles. America became a part of Carlos - through it's land and his struggles and successes in it. He wanted desperately to help America grow into the country he knew it could be, and he sacrificed so much for America. His hopes were contained within America, and so America was contained within him.

The subaltern has spoken........2003-08-17

Writing a review of Carlos Bulosan's AMERICA IS IN THE HEART is a deceptively difficult thing to do. What gives? It is an easy read, very straightforward, and well articulated. On the surface, the ARCHIVE (in the Foucault sense) point to a death by a broken heart. However, closer examination points to a death brought on by the collective affliction, deprivation, and maltreatment since his arrival in the early 30s - not to mention the bouts of excessive drinking and violence. The book, moreover, leans toward a united effort to combat global fascism; but this poignant autobiography is really a testimony to those years of struggle against racism and violence.

An autobiography in four parts, Bulosan takes us back (literally and figuratively) to his roots in Binalonan, Pangasinan. Bulosan is keen to intimate his adolescent years were his family barely survived on four hectares of land (which they eventually lost to the moneylender and the absentee landlords) and the efforts of the DYNAMIC LITTLE PEASANT WOMAN. In the end, things just got SO BAD that the men (most barely boys) in the clan eventually opted for the promise of jobs and such in America. This begs the question (and often overlooked by scholars) that the suffering really started at home. His habitus was so bad, it seems, that despite the ravages he (and his direct kin as well as kababayans) experienced, they elected to remain in the US. That seems to be the common plight of most immigrants to the US - and I say this guardedly.

At this point, I would like to juxtapose the optimism and the rage that formed the collective consciousness of Carlos Bulosan and his inability to reconcile the contradiction.

AMERICA IS ALSO THE NAMELESS FOREIGNER, THE HOMELESS REFUGEE, THE HUNGRY BOY BEGGING FOR A JOB AND THE BLACK BODY DANGLING ON A TREE. AMERICA IS THE ILLITERATE IMMIGRANT WHO IS ASHAMED THAT THE WORLD OF BOOKS AND THE INTELLECTUAL OPPORTUNITIES IS CLOSED TO HIM.

WE ARE ALL THAT NAMELESS FOREIGNER, THE HOMELESS REFUGEE, THAT HUNGRY BOY, THAT ILLITERATE IMMIGRANT AND THAT LYNCHED BLACK BODY. ALL OF US, FROM THE FIRST ADAMS TO THE LAST FILIPINO, NATIVE BORN OR ALIEN, EDUCATED OR ILLITERATE. WE ARE AMERICA!

Carlos Bulosan, excerpt from AMERICA IS IN THE HEART

Almost echoing the angst of Richard Wright, Bulosan and his proletarian experience is translated quickly to a racism tour-de-force. It cuts right into the heart of his critique. Despite being laced with communist verbiage, the autobiography is a critique against the savagery of prejudice. The subaltern has spoken. We simply need to take heed.

One of the most compelling or fascinating issues brought up in AMERICA IS IN THE HEART is the issue of gender discrimination. The laws prohibiting marriage to white women by so-called Mongolian (and later changed to include Malay) was to exacerbate the racist problems. What is the REAL impact on the psyche of a law such as this? What are the long-term effects of ignorant eugenic laws such as these? Who knows?

Despite the clarity of the writing, it would seem that the book was written in good faith but it certainly fumbles from a lack of sophistication (which does not pose a problem for me). I don't think Bulosan meant this work to be representative of the entire Filipino-American experience but it certainly suffers an editorial/historical problem. Bulosan certainly edits his experience. Punctuated with a sense of disgust for the human experience it makes me feel that he lacks pathos. In terms of the veracity of the entire book, I have no problem believing the accuracy of the experience but history is already removed one step to us via the writer and one more step removed again by the writer to his actual experience. We may never get to the REAL truth and the REAL extent of the violence. However, if but one experience of violence against a Filipino AS SUCH, or a denial of lodging to a Filipino AS SUCH (or any group for that matter) is accurate then an injustice has occurred. We as a body politic should take note. AMERICA IS IN THE HEART is therefore a book that is also a call for collective agency.

To re-iterate, this book may not be fully representative of the PINOY experience and certainly Bulosan should be read carefully. It is an indictment on a negative social condition - where one man can create an OTHER in a society that plays up universal brotherhood. Not to trivialize the concern, this is not an uncommon malady. The question that begs to be asked is: Does Bulosan write AS IF he is writing about the whole truth?

In closing, Bulosan is a necessary read because it augments the selection of the Asian-American experience in general and ethnic studies in general. It is a deep and cutting exploration into a Filipino experience - it adds to the complexity of identity creation. If anything, this book is a pause to be self-reflective of the past for both the SAME and the OTHER. In loving memory to a brave kababayan...

A Tragic Attempt at Tragedy.......2003-05-28

Those looking for an uplifting read need to look elsewhere; Bulosan's "America..." reads like a laundry list of suffering and hopelessness. Bulosan writes powerfully, compellingly and beatifully, but he would have been better off sticking to his own story instead of trying to create a composite.

With tragedy so frequently present nowadays, it doesn't seem hard to believe that Bulosan's protagonist would experience so much tragedy (extreme poverty, deaths, heartbreak in every sense of the word, a severely debilitating disease, etc., etc.). A closer reading reveals that he has indeed created a composite, mashing the numerous hard-luck stories of the Filipino migrant workers of that time into a single person's life. It is difficult to believe, but if you can get beyond that fact, "America..." proves a depressing read with important historical weight, chronicling the ups and mostly downs of the Filipino migrant, with a progression from childhood to the life's winding down phase.

I lent this book to my grandfather, who lived at approximately the same time, and could very well have been in the provincial areas, practicing the customs Bulosan described. It was extremely disappointing but enlightening to have him give the book a thumbs down based on accuracy. Many descriptions of the hardships of not only Bulosan but those around him, particularly in the Philippines, were much too tragic for my grandfather to take, although he had suffered plenty in his childhood.

Often in writing stories, reality is much more interesting than fiction; by trying to unrealistically include everyone's experiences as one individual's trial does create an unbelievable tale, that will be even more difficult for those unaccustomed to the goings-on and atmosphere of a third-world country.

Bulosan's work is important as it is one of the select pieces of Filipino-American literature that has made the rounds in universities and literary circles, and that it covers an often forgotten group and struggle in American history. However, his attempt to create an all-encompassing experience within a single character is his downfall. A read recommended with a grain of salt.

Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.

While med school at the University of Pennsylvania didn't expose Oz to the holistic healing methods he employs today, his upbringing in Turkey and exposure to cultures worldwide did leave him open to new ideas. Oz helped develop the LVAD, or left ventricular assist device, which helps the heart of a patient awaiting a transplant keep pumping. I rate this book very highly with relation to what it teaches regarding cardial care.
What also struck me is a reference to what he experienced in Turkey, were Dr. Oz spent a vacation as a child or teenager. He refers to this somewhat timidly.
Can you imagine: there was no toilet paper. It was explained to him, that Turkish people, like Indonesians and other Asian people refrain from rubbing an obnoxious substance into a tender skin with paper, which Western people have been led to believe represents cleaning, but rather prefer using water and their left hand.
People that use their right hand's middle finger to signal derision, don't know what they are signaling about. Dr. Oz mentions, that the Eastern method of personal hygiene also diminishes the survival rate of hemorrhoids.
So it would seem that the book promotes health of heart as well as of another , but less admired, part of the human anatomy. A double whammy so to speak.

Dr. Oz is, I guess, trying to be a complementary surgeon, and he does okay in his explanations of the typical complements i.e. yoga, music, but he is still a surgeon, and his belief in surgery comes through loud and clear. Just as the "YOU" books are deceptive in their attempt to woo the reader into believing this is a new approach to medicine. Alternative therapies were mainstream medicine long before Oz decided to be a revolutionary. Hard to read a book based on false premises. I much prefer the truth, even it sounds to some as being "too loving." Read Rayna Gangi, Deepak Chopra- let these guys go be surgeons.

Dr. Oz, the heart wizard, is of Turkish descent and attempts to combine East and West traditions of healing during post-surgery. He is a heart surgeon located in New York City. First of all, he is searching for the elusive one universal healing endeavor. Some things we all need are recommended such as Love is a major healing force, as is religious faith in one God. He is of the opinion that modern medicine is not perfect. Nothing is perfect, not even beauty, he says.

Music can be healing or it can turn destructive if your favorite network plays exactly what you dislike the most, as mine is currently doing, as an irritant. Believe me, I have the emails to prove it is done on purpose just to make me hurt. But I push a button until that awful stuff is over, so it really doesn't fulfill the purpose they intend. There are devils on earth.

Pets can be a reason to live. Some are actual life savers for their owners. The purpose of healing is to bring us in harmony with ourselves. Sounds like Depock Chopra.

Our minds and emotions affect our immune systems. Depression, loneliness, and stress (brains and bodies) can cause death. Emotions are not only in our heads but affect all of our body cells. All cells are geared to know what each is supposed to do, independent of messages from the brain.

He talked about the Greek myth of Psyche and Cupid, god of Love. She needed the knife so as to be armed to deal with consequences. Who knows when an ardent lover will turn violent.

The view that all types of medicine (western and eastern) working together makes sense. This book seems to encorage a balance between both. I enjoyed it.

Good book but...........2007-10-05

I had to tweak alot of the recipes for added flavor. Although marvelous with detail of the true authentic Mexican dishes, there is some lack of substance with some of the recipes. Sometimes some are just plain bad with poor seasoning and flavor. Rick Bayless has some real hit and misses, but his books are good reading, and his programs are just downright enjoyable and mouthwatering to watch. Oh, and one last note...I met Rick Bayless at a book signing in San Antonio Texas just recently, and was disappointed with his personality, but I'm still a fan nonetheless.

I received this book yesterday, and I will say to those who don't own any Mexican cuisine cookbook: buy this as your first Mexican cookbook! This book by Bayless contains a discussion of basic cuisines of Mexico, ingredients, the most popular dishes and variations of them. It is authentic while also hinting which dishes have inspired Mexcian-American fares such as burritos you see in Mexican eateries in the US and beyond. Bayless also discusses the variations, and antedotes about each dish.

Here in New Zealand (or Australia), Mexican eateries are very few and far in between and most serve an Anglicized version (or in some cases, even Southeast Asianized as they are owned by Muslim Malay Malaysians) of Cal-Mex dishes, which I trust you are aware are already modified to suit North American palates. This is a good book for NZ-based foodies to get educated with this fantastic cuisine that, in my opinion, is up there with cuisines of Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia in flavours.

I do believe there are a few shortcomings though: the book has only scratched the surface, there is no listing of each dish at each section's headings, and no taggings are made of the origin of these dishes. In comparing with cookbooks of Indonesia (a country as equally diverse as Mexico and sharing a lot of parallels with it) such as Yasa Boga's "The Best of Indonesian Cooking" the contents page of poultry section will show satay ayam Madura (Madura-style i.e. peanut sauce chicken satay) is from East Java. Unless you read the descriptions carefully it is hard to find that Birria de Chivo o de Carnero (slow-steamed goat or lamb with mild chile seasoning) is from Guadalajara.

Having said this, I feel it is only a starting point for those who like to delve deep into Mexican cuisine. I recommend Bayless's "Mexico One Plate At A Time" for additional coverage of the most popular dishes like mole and flans, and Richard Sandoval's "Modern Mexican Flavors" or Thomas Schnetz's "Dona Tomas" for a perspective of what modern metro Mexican food in the early 21st century is like. From other reviewers, Diana Kennedy's works are equally good and worth to own as well but other than "From My Mexcian Kitchen", I believe they tend to overlap with much of Bayless's works on recipes. Unless you are interested to build a library of Mexcian cookbooks at home, I would suggest purchasing either Bayless's or Kennedy's works.

One of the most difficult challenges I have faced when suggesting to my patients on dietary modifications is offering patients alternatives to their inflammatory menus. i think the most important step in choosing a bible is the version. this is an nkjv, and i'm very pleased with how easy this version reads.when others pick it up, i am usually asked if i could get them a copy, and even my kids find this version understandable, and therefore enjoyable.

that aside, this is the most beautiful bible i've seen. with paintings from thomas kincaide, and the words of his wife, i have found a new beauty in grabbing and READING my bible.i have had the juniper(dark)green leather bound copy for two yrs.i am pleased with how good it looks, and i do not have a delicate hand! i have also given them as gifts.my local bible shop charged just a few dollars to personalize, which should be a considaration in price. reading this pretty bible feels like a treat!

A beautiful "take anywhere" Bible.......2005-11-18

Thomas Kinkade fans will not be disappointed! I have only had this Bible for a week and am just delighted! This Bible is absolutely beautifully illustrated. My words do not even do it justice.

This NKJV is sleek and put together very well. It is not too large or heavy making it easily portable, yet the size of the print is still large enough for comfortable reading. (For the record, I have very bad vision corrected with contacts.) I have seen reference Bibles larger than this one with smaller size print!

The devotions are also very inspiring, but I have not read them all yet. While the devotions I have read are very good, there are not that many of them as compared to other more in depth devotional Bibles. (About one per week, plus a few more.) This is not a bad thing. It is just not that type of Bible. All of these devotions, as I understand it, were written by Nanette Kinkade, and I appreciate her sharing them very much!

The overall quality of this edition is exceptional. To be fair, I am not sure about the hardback edition as I have never seen one. I realize this is a matter of preference, but I believe, the bonded leather edition is the way to go. It may cost a bit more, but it is well-worth the difference in price. I say this as it seems Kinkade's pictures just seem to belong in a leather bound Bible. Again, this is a matter of opinion. His pictures are certainly beautiful any where.

The only real complaint or disappointment I had was that this is not a red letter edition of the Bible. It was put together so well and so beautifully, however, that I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would.

I just read a grand review of this book that appears on Vintage Rock www.vintagerock.com.bjones_book.aspx in which the reviewer compares Brian's killing to the conspiracy behind JFK's assassination. What I find most interesting is the complete quiet we hear coming from the British Isles when so many are currently presenting clues and evidence surrounding Brian's death.

Even though Ms. Shepherd's book offers compelling facts relating to his death, she leaves out another suspicious death--that of Graham Bond who would've made a fantastic witness to talk about the threatening phone call Brian received at his "hideaway" only two days before his death. While the author does a dramatic job of re-enacting the events of Bond accepting the phone threat on Brian's behalf, she fails to mention that Bond "accidentally" fell under a train not long thereafter. Before he could personally testify about what he knew. Just as with witnesses who were willing to testify about JFK's assassination, many who were willing to testify about Brian's death also either suddenly disappeared or suddenly died! Coincidence? Think about it.

Lonesome Dove.......2007-09-16

Since I learned this book is supposed to be written from Brian's POV I don't understand why some complain that the author only focuses on Brian's good qualities and doesn't put him down for all the horrible deeds and nasty pranks he was known to have committed against others. I got it right off. Since Brian is talking about himself here, he like any of us wouldn't be sitting down (or standing up LOL) talking badly about himself.

He probably couldn't see all his faults especially since those nasty pranks were mostly committed during his up's and down's mood swings, when he didn't have much control over what he was doing. None of us sees ourselves as others do, and Brian was hurting over losing the friendship and camaraderie of his band mates but he couldn't understand where he had turned them off. Also none of them believed his many ailments that caused him to miss performances and rehearsals. The other Stones thought he was just being a cry baby or lazy but he gave it his best shot. It just wasn't good enough for the healthy ones who couldn't sympathize with his predicament.

In reading this story I got to thinking of Brian Jones as a beautiful Lonesome Dove, bleeding from the inside and not knowing how to get the help and unquestioning love he so badly needed.

WHAT A RIDE!.......2007-09-06

I'm part of a R&B band myself and got to meet Mick and the rest back in the day. So I try making time to read memoirs and such when I get the time. I've not written any reviews before but this story really caught me up. The book took so many twists and turns different than the rest out there that sometimes all stumble on each other with the same info.

I only wish this book would've gone into the story and testimony of Brian's murder earlier. That was the part that fascinated me. Not to say I want to believe it. But it for sure has more proof than anything I've seen before. All the facts come together and I hate to say that even though I don't want to believe what this story says happened, I can't find anything to prove it didn't happen.

I got to talking with others about this who say they heard similar storys for years but never saw it all laid out so totally. We'd like to see this turned into a film. Not like Stoned that is whitewash, but if this book is made into a movie as its written then we'd have something to watch for sure.

I only wonder why the Brits don't want to open the case. There's to much out there to ignore but hey that's on their heads.

CONNECT THE DOTS............2007-09-05

I usually enjoy a good old fashioned murder mystery and decided upon this story for my next unsolved whodunit. I wasn't interested in the history of the Rolling Stones or their music per se but found the idea, that one of their own had been possibly murdered at the behest of some of their own, intriguing to say the least.
Any reader interested in true crime will find the lady author's last 3 chapters plus 3 part epilogue very enlightening; somewhat reminiscent of Agatha Christie. As I read her results, I began to do research myself into each aspect of the crime that was brought up. Amazingly I found there is much evidence out there if one takes the time to actually look for it in press releases, actual testimony plus word-of-mouth tales swapped as to what actually happened to Mr. Jones at the time of his death and shortly thereafter.
It is mind-boggling that British authorities did not and still have not seriously investigated what was flagrantly a murder for hire. I located old magazine articles (and some fairly new) that corroborate a majority of what Ms. Shepherd attests to in her book. I found interesting also the fact that fans of Brian Jones have so viciously attacked her regarding claims of his not-so-well hidden sexual preference and drug use. All that pales in comparison to the fact he was obviously murdered in a most heinous manner by those laughingly hired to protect him!
I cannot understand why more focus isn't placed on what the meat `n potatoes of this book actually is: proof positive that Brian was purposely done away with and afterwards his prized possessions either callously burned in a bonfire (which again British authorities apparently turned a blind eye into investigating) or hauled off by both his band mates and his killers. That's where the reader needs to focus and not on who kissed whom, male or female, or whether Brian was still heavily imbibing drugs and alcohol at the time of his drowning.
I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy connecting the dots and seeing for themselves that the murder of Brian Jones remains mainly a major unrecognized and overlooked cold case crime. For anyone who likes to see justice served we should ban together and demand a complete, honest investigation into this killing.

STEWED & KEEFED.......2007-08-31

The honeymoon between Sir Mick and Keith apparently is at its end. Fragile nerves and high tensions have reached their peak and Keef is lashing out indiscriminately. His latest target is once again Brian Jones-the 63 year old Stone finds the band's former leader easy prey since the dead are hardly ever known to fight back. He believes he'll have a better chance of winning the battle of words against a ghost rather than take Mick on full force.

Oddly the open wound growing between Mick and Keith comes at a time when the author of Straight from the Heart is ready to announce the release of Brian's audiotapes. Word is she's finally received permission from the "keeper of the flame" for all these many years-who's mainly led a reclusive lifestyle since Brian's murder.

As part of the British rock scene during the late Sixties to early Seventies, I'd heard rumors flying that Brian had a hidden stash of tapes he'd recorded. We all figured they were only of music he'd put together during his stay at Cotchford. Now it appears that not only music was being composed while he lived the life of a solitary man, but that he had recorded his memoirs. Quite a feat for someone whom the Stones insisted was too incapacitated due to drugs and drinking to play guitar.

In my humble opinion I believe the author did a gargantuan job in re-enacting Brian's life in such an authentic and often tongue-in-cheek manner.

This is an easy read and very good advice for anyone at any age. Robin is just so down to earth - you just gotta like her. I have a tremendous respect for her after reading this book - would love to be able to emulate her.

Robin Roberts took her time to tell about life and the lessons she learned on the way from her parents. God blessed Ms. Roberts to grow up in a family with support and much love. Beautifully written keep up the great work. Write another book soon.

Robin's seven rules are ones we could all live by... although she tells us that we should develop our own rules based on our own life experiences. Robin was fortunate to have great parents who taught her well. She stayed true to her dreams and chose her path in life based on those dreams, not someone else's and not by money. This is an excellent book for all to read, but I would say it is especially important for the younger generation. Robin provides a firm foundation for success in life.

As the CEO of Manco, Inc., Jack Kahl is a very successful businessman. Now he can add accomplished author to his list, because Leading from the Heart is a great read that enlightened me to many effective leadership tactics. His idea of a servant leader is inspiring and provides leadership techniques that make people WANT to follow you. This book would be a great guide for any entrepreneur that wants to build a successful business based on good values. Everything in Leading from the Heart is relevant and applicable to real life situations. Kahl's ideas can lead you to a successful career and a happier life as well.

This is a great book. I've been a student of leadership for the past few years, always reading about historically significant men and women and how they were able to impact the world. Then I picked up Kahl's book, and I couldn't put it down. Servant leadership isn't a new concept, many of the powerful leaders I've studied employed this technique. However, in today's society, we rarely focus on a servant leadership technique. Kahl does a great job of outlining what real leadership looks like and how one can implement it in his everyday life. He makes the case that being a servant leader isn't "weak" or "sweet." No, it's the most effective way to influence others, reach your goals, and make sure you AND your team are successful. Whether you are a CEO, business owner, or simply in charge of leading your family, you will find relevant advice and concepts to think about in this book.

When my boyfriend first handed me this book and said I had to check it out, I was honestly a little offended. I've never been one to read life-coaching books in any area, especially not in my job. As a young assistant DA, I thought I did a pretty good job of managing myself and my employees, and I didn't need a book to tell me how to do that. But as soon as I read the first chapter, I realized why he had given me the book, which he got from a friend. Kahl takes a different approach to the role of leadership, championing the idea of acting as a "servant" to those around you in order to get the best out of them. The idea sounded crazy to me at first, but as I starting practicing some of his suggestions, I saw such an increase in productivity and a general uplift in the attitude around the office! I can't believe a simple book could make such a difference, but it sure did. I recommend this book for anyone who is in a position of leadership, no matter how high or low in the company, because you could learn a lot from Kahl.

As a small business owner, I am always looking for good leadership and business books; Leadership From the Heart is one of the best books I've found in a very long time. Jack Kahl shares how he mananged to build a business worth more than $300 million, Manco Inc., and still maintain an ethical, character-driven leadership style. Kahl makes it clear that you can unite ethics and a bottom line, while still being successfull. The best thing about this book is that Kahl's leadership style isn't a gimmic. He really wants to be successful, but he knows that those accomplishments are more lucrative, and feel better, if the people around him are successful too. This book teaches you to be a better leader, better business person, and a better human being.
