Book Description

Corrie Ten Boom stood naked with her older sister  Betsie, watching a concentration camp matron  beating a prisoner."Oh, the poor woman,"  Corrie cried."Yes. May God forgive her,"  Betsie replied. 5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-09

I bought the book The Hiding Place because I had the lost the one I had. I greatly enjoyed the book. It is well written, and Historical. Her story is one that should never be forgotten. The book was in great shape when I got it.

5 out of 5 stars Biography of a True Christian Heroine.......2007-08-08

This is the first book you should read to get to know Corrie Ten Boom, a woman whose life took a dramatic turn when her family was caught up in a turbulent and tragic time when the Nazi's occupied Holland. Corrie, her father and sister were morally convicted to harbor and hide Jews who were facing arrest and deportation. After being betrayed, they were sent to jail, and eventually Corrie and Betsie were sent to Ravensbruck, a German concentration/death camp. Throughout her life, Corrie held onto her Saviour Jesus Christ, and found out that there is no pit too deep that God is not there to pull you out.

Corrie is completed honest and transparent in describing her life. She does not sugarcoat her own mistakes, and the bitterness and hatred she harbored in her heart. She does not make herself out to be a saint. But as a real human being experiencing the depravity of human sin, she in her own power could not forgive or love her enemies. She was incredulous upon hearing her sister Betsie pray for the Nazi's, and as Betsie got physically weaker and weaker, she was strengthened spiritually, encouraging Corrie to let go her hatred, and to spread the word of God's love through the most horrible circumstances. Betsie, before she was set free (passed away), also inspired Corrie to open a home for displaced people after the war. Miraculously Corrie was set free and able to make her way home. She fulfills Betsie's dreams of opening a rest home, and ministering to people who had suffered so much at the hands of evil.

The book ends in 1946. To find out about Corrie's return to Germany and her ministering to former prison guards, make sure to read "Tramp for the Lord."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Love, Courage, and Faith.......2007-08-06

Corrie Ten Boom and her family exhibited true Christian love. They did not shrink from their duty to hide the persecuted Jews, nor did they lack courage as they were arrested and placed in concentration camps. Several family members died, with only Corrie surviving due to miraculous intervention. Did she harbor bitterness? Yes. But her faith in the Lord God Jehovah sustained her through this difficult time. She came to the place in her spiritual life where God changed her heart, enabling to forgive her captors. This is truly a story that will warm your heart and point you to a personal Savior, Jesus Christ, who loves and cares for His children. Read how God directs their paths, even when imprisoned, and blesses them mightily despite their circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars GRIPPING and inspiring!.......2007-08-04

I really tried not to read this book right before bed b/c of the tough content, but I just couldn't put it down!

The voice is delightful--warm, genuine, matter-of-fact--appealing neither to sentiment or false piety. Corrie shares her story honestly and so pleasantly that you feel you are sitting with her over a cup of tea. She makes no pretense about her own bravery, but humbly shares her own struggles and how the Lord faithfully sustained her. The lessons on forgiveness are timeless and unforgettable. Be careful; you're likely to feel conviction to apply these truths to your own life! =)

I would not recommend this book for small children; anyone under the age of 10 might be too upset by some of the content (her sister's death, their cruel treatment in prison)--but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone who has ever wondered:
--would they have courage to stand up for their faith if put to the ultimate test?
--why does God allow bad things to happen to "good" people?
--when should one fight back and when should one humbly submit
--is it safe to trust God in absolute surrender?

May God bless you as He blessed me in reading this book!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing novel.......2007-07-17

This is a beautiful novel about one woman and her family's journey as they smuggled Jews in their home and other "safe houses" in war torn Holland during the 1940's. Corrie and her family ended up in jail and finally a concentration camp because of her willingness to protect God's children during the Holocaust. Her faith and God's truth ring out clearly in her writing and remarkable story. It really pushed me to think of a more Godly perspective instead of one of this world. This is an excellent novel.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting books I have read recently.......2007-08-23

Joel Greenblatt's book is a masterpiece of investment information. The book provides valuable information for anyone involved in the markets, whether they are an individual investor or a finance professional.

The book details several types of special situation investing and explains the pros and cons of these situations. What was most impressive about this book however, is that manner in which he manages to explain everything he is discussing in such a clear, and engaging fashion. Although I do not usually think of finance books as "page turners" I read this one virtually, in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars My other favorite book.......2007-05-17

I know the title of the book sounds like a joke but it's a great book. In fact, it is my favorite investment book after Warren Buffett's letters to shareholders. Joel Greenblatt takes you to investing areas that aren't followed closely by Wall Street and help you make money at the same time.

I am also a sucker for investment books that are fun to read and doesn't cause me to feel like I'm chewing glasses. This doesn't mean this book isn't top-notch! For what it's worth, I would've probably pay over $50 for this gem.

5 out of 5 stars A good book, despite the title.......2007-04-15

Although the title leaves a little to be desired, and you may want to hide it from friends who think you have a get-rich-quick scheme brewing, this book is actually full of insightful knowledge about special situation investing. These are situations in which the market may misjudge a company's stock price and a smart investor may be able to jump in and take advantage of the temporary mispricing. A few examples include spin-offs, where a company will break off a part of its business as a new company with its own stock, corporate restructuring, merger securities, and companies recovering from bankruptcy. Each chapter covers a different concept and includes a few examples.
The book is written well with lots of humor throughout. A beginner without an adequate background in business may find the topics confusing, but intermediate investors should be able to find some practical knowledge of places to look for mispriced companies. A warning: the ideas do require some homework. Be prepared to read through press releases, financial statements, and other boring pieces that no one else bothers to read to find potential picks. But that's what value investing is about, finding the stocks that no one else bothers to look. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Uncover the Secret Hiding Places of Stock Market Profits.......2007-04-14

I am usually turned away by cute and quirky book titles, and though this rule is usually a good one to follow, this book is another good reason not to always judge a book by its cover. The sub, sub-title is the real heart of the book on how to "uncover the secret hiding places of stock market profits". If I add one of my favorite lines in the book, "you don't have to be a genius, but you do need a basic understanding of financial statements, some common sense, and the patience necessary to gain experience" this quote really sums up the thesis of Mr. Greenblatt. His theme being that I will describe and point the way to some of the hiding places of possible under appreciated value opportunities, but you as the investor must put in the due diligence and a little work on your own.

Though this book was originally published in 1997, Mr. Greenblatt is still at his trade and doing well which bodes well for this book and its teachings. Toss in a little uncertainty, a special situation, your due diligence, and your on your way as you now know the hiding places.

5 out of 5 stars Who are you?.......2007-03-14

There are two types of people; people who save money and people who don't. It is really easy if you don't save money (you will suffer when you are old, but now you are fine). If you save money, you are always thinking about where to invest money. You can either put money in bank (where you are barely beating inflation) or you can put money in stock market.
There are two types of people who do "something" in stock market; people who trade and people who invest. If you believe in investing and not trading, you are perpetually worrying about finding "cheap" stocks (if you are buying "expensive" stocks then you should STOP and start trading instead).

It really doesn't matter which category of people you belong to, you really need to read this book as a starting point for your investment education. Joe gives you some investment scenarios to consider for finding "cheap" stocks, but, more importantly he does that in very "average Joe" friendly way. Really easy read.

Book Description

More and more scrapbookers and paper artists are seeking clever ways to make their albums and paper projects more interesting and three-dimensional. One of the most exciting ways of accomplishing this is by adding interactive elements, such as doors that open and reveal hidden layers, and envelopes and pockets that hold secret text, personal letters, or special photos.

Pockets, Pull Outs and Hiding Places: A Guide to Interactive Scrapbooking, Memory Art and Paper Art teaches the paper engineering techniques for making three dimensional and interactive “paper tools” such as vellum pockets, hinged doors that reveal mini booklets underneath. These tools are applicable to scrapbookers, memory, and paper artists at any level of experience. The tools are also adjustable enough to be used in any style of work.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for altered book artists.......2007-09-18

I truly enjoy this book as a resource for making altered books. It contains lot of ideas to give your altered books interesting elements and ways to tuck in little extras. I have to disagree with the reviewer who says it is just about scrapbooking. I don't scrapbook at all and find this an invaluable help for my paper arts hobby. However, scrapbookers will enjoy the ideas, as well.

2 out of 5 stars It's OK, but not enough diagrams.......2007-08-02

I got this book because, like many others, wanted to get some good ideas on incorporating these elements into my collage and photo art. The focus is very scrapbook-y, but that wouldn't matter to me if there were at least some good diagrams/step-by-step instructions on how to complete the projects.

I have several other bookbinding books that show complicated binding approaches with diagrams that make it so easy to complete. This book needs some diagrams! In this book, there were many ideas I had seen before, but I still thought the examples are a nice collection of approaches, however, the instructions are poorly written.

On a positive side, the templates are nice.

Since I have several other books that show similar examples, I will probably end up giving this book to a friend who scrapbooks. I do think this is a good book for scrapbookers--the examples and ideas will appeal to them. I'm somewhere between scrapbooking and collage/mixed media artist, so there are other books that appeal to me more.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!!.......2007-03-10

I had always wondered how these things were done. This book if informative and the instuctions are very good. I recommend this one very highly.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets.......2007-01-13

Great and easy to use with full sized templates. The instructions are clear with excellent photos. Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative Ideas.......2006-08-20

I found the various different ways of creating sketchbook/journals exhibited in this book very helpful in offering my students creative options to bookmaking.

Book Description

Corrie ten Boom was a woman admired the world over for her courage, her forgiveness, and her memorable faith. In World War II, she and her family risked their lives to help Jews escape the Nazis, and their reward was a trip to Hitler's concentration camps. But she survived and was released--as a result of a clerical error--and now shares the story of how faith triumphs over evil. For thirty-five years Corrie's dramatic life story, full of timeless virtues, has prepared readers to face their own futures with faith, relying on God's love to overcome, heal, and restore. Now releasing in a thirty-fifth anniversary edition for a new generation of readers, The Hiding Place tells the riveting story of how a middle-aged Dutch watchmaker became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's death camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century.

Corrie was a prisoner in one of Hitler's concentration camps. As an abused wife, I found myself identifying very closely with the prisoner, Corrie, as she ministered to my wounded spirit through her wonderful book, The Hiding Place. I realized as I was reading it, that I too lived in a concentration camp. I have found that all of Corrie's books transcend time and place in their ability to touch hearts even today.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Christ's Unbounded Forgiveness.......2007-08-29

This classic work touches on so many feelings and thoughts. For me, the most interesting part was the one where she came across the SS man who had been at Ravensbruck (p. 238). Hatred and revenge came to Corrie's heart. She could not bring herself to shake his hand. She realized that she could not forgive him in her own power, and so she prayerfully asked for the Lord's forgiveness to flow through her. At once, her hatred melted away and was replaced by overwhelming love. She realized that the Lord, who commands us to love our enemies, also gives us the means to do this.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational, Horrific, Suspenseful, Humorours true story........2007-08-15

The first publication of The Hiding Place introduced me to Corrie ten Boom, who became my heroine. Several years later, I saw and heard her in person at First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Nuggets from this story continue teaching me to this day. Recently, I bought five copies to share with friends. Not counting the Bible, The Hiding Place probably made more impact on my life than any other book.

5 out of 5 stars A simple yet inspiring story of faith.......2007-07-13

This book is a Christian classic, but for some reason I never picked it up until recently. It is the story of one family as they are simply obedient to the Lord's leading in the impossible situation they find themselves facing. John and Elizabeth Sherrill do a wonderful job of tuning you in to Corrie and the ten Boom family, both through peaceful times and wartime. The style is simple yet profound, and I guarantee that you will be moved by this powerful story!

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Read.......2007-06-18

When the topic of this book comes up among friends and acquaintances, the response is usually that someone read the book when they were a teen, and that they appreciated the story. It is great that young people are reading the book, but this piece deserves to be read by every thinking adult. In fact, I would argue that the older a soul is, the greater the appreciation will be for the content of the Ten Boom's story.

Oftentimes people reference this book in light of the ethical dilemmas raised concerning devout Christians lying to protect Jews. But the contributions this book makes to an outlook on religion, society, and life run much deeper than that interesting question. In a world where many are confused about the distinction between good and evil, that line is clear in the book. When we struggle to commit ourselves to causes greater than our own luxury and amusement, we read of a simple family that literally gave their lives for what was right and true. In a culture that is fairly fuzzy about its religious commitments, we know that the Ten Booms did amazing things out of love for their God.

This is a well-written book that has a lot to say, and deserves to be read no matter our age.

In this latest from bestseller Elizabeth George, China River, recuperating from a failed love affair, agrees to accompany her ne'er-do-well brother Cherokee to the Channel Islands to hand-deliver a set of architectural drawings to an expatriate millionaire whose plans to fund a museum commemorating the war-time exploits of his Guernsey neighbors comes a cropper after he's found dead under suspicious circumstances. George spins an intricate and lively plot that spotlights the efforts of series regulars Deborah and Simon St. John to help Deborah's old friends free themselves; in the process, she introduces a fascinating cast of secondary characters, many of whom had much more obvious motives to wish Guy Brouard dead than the California siblings who seem tailor-made for a frame-up. A fine addition to George's ouevre, this thirteenth outing in her popular series will delight her fans. --Jane Adams

Book Description

An isolated beach on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel is the scene of the murder of Guy Brouard, one of Guernsey’s wealthiest inhabitants and its main benefactor. Forced as a child to flee the Nazis in Paris, Brouard was engaged in his latest project when he died: a museum in honor of those who resisted the German occupation of the island during World War II.

It is from this period of time that his murderer may well have come. But there are others on Guernsey with reason to want Guy Brouard dead: his wives, his business associates, his current mistress, the underprivileged teenagers he mentored—any of whom might have harbored a secret motive for murder. As family and friends gather for the reading of the will, Deborah and Simon St. James find that seemingly everyone on the history-haunted island has something to hide. And behind all the lies and alibis, a killer is lurking. In order to bring this person to justice, the St. James must delve into Guernsey’s dark history—both past and present—and into the troubled psyche of someone who may have exacted retribution for the most unspeakable crime of all.

In A Place of Hiding, bestselling novelist Elizabeth George marks new territory in the darker landscapes of human relationships. She tells a gripping, suspenseful story of betrayal and devotion, war and remembrance, love and loss...and the higher truths to which we must all ultimately answer.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Perfection.......2007-07-24

Absolutely fascinating character studies within an intricately woven plot in a mysterious locale makes this a great page-turning read! Just as the island itself is reluctant to give up its WWII secrets, so are the characters -- multi-layered facets and motives are hidden within each and from each other. Another brilliantly executed work from Ms. George!

3 out of 5 stars A Place of Hiding.......2007-07-18

Elizabeth George is a prolific and very popular author. I'd recently read With No One As A Witness and found it very well written. Then I tried to read What Came Before He Shot Her and I couldn't get into it. A Place of Hiding is somewhere in the middle of these two books. Deborah and Simon St. James are summoned to Guernsey in the Channel Islands to act as detectives because Deborah's friend, China, has been arrested for the murder of a philandering philantrophist named Guy Brouard. She and her brother, Cheyenne, were hired as couriers to deliver a package from California to Guy Brouard. The book seems to go on too long with two many sub-plots. The setting in Guernsey in the Channel Islands did add interest, but overall this is not one of her best.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-05-12

I'm not sure why this book has gotten such negative reviews. The marrage of Simon and Deborah needed to be explored at some point and this was the story. The setting was great, the mystery kept me guessing and Simon and Deborah acted as they normally act. Deborah realized she needed to grow-up and beome an adult and Simon is reluctant to let her go there. It was a story that needed to be told to keep the story going. Elizabeth George's novels are as much about the characters as the mysteries. In any case I liked the book, I like where the St. James's are going and would recommend this books highly.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the series.......2006-12-01

I must be in the minority who find this novel to be the best of George's mystery series. I'm a huge fan of the St. James marriage and it was a treat to have Deborah featured so prominently in this book. In addition, the story was so well written that I had no idea who had committed the crimes in question until the very end. The setting in the Channel Islands was a welcome change of pace from past novels. Sadly, it's obvious with this book's sequel, With No One as Witness, that Ms. George is headed in the direction of revisiting the tedious back-and-forth between Lynley and St. James over Deborah. I doubt I'll continue reading the series after that last novel, which I really didn't enjoy, but this one was a great!

5 out of 5 stars Surprised.......2006-07-10

I was a little surprised with all the negative reviews of this George novel. I virtually read it in one sitting/day. It is a novel with an interesting setting with intriguing historical contexts and a mystery of all is not what it seems.

It was also a "growth" story of two of George's recurring characters-the St James who I enjoy. I like the way George uses them to reflect all that is not in the Lynley marriage. And I do think this is a novel which sets up alot of what happens in the next of the series which I have already quickly read. While I enjoy the other characters to a degree it is reading what George does with the St. James in her "soap opera" portions of her novels which I really like. In this novel Deborah, in particular, and there is little talk of her infertility, faces alot of humbling situations and the hard facts of living. So does Simon but the one thing the couple sustains is their love for each other and the strength it gives them.

I thought the whole of the arc of the mystery intriguing as well as other characters-all learning all is not what it seems and how to deal with that. Frankly I thought it was one of her best novels and while it does deal with sexual themes and innuendo less so than for example what I thought was amorality in In Pursuit of A Proper Sinner. I too was surprised as to George's use of the treatment of animals in this novel-not really typical but then maybe that was all part of the parallel microcosms she creates in her novels.

I'm a fan of Joseph Finder, but don't purchase this book if you've already read COMPANY MAN.

NO HIDING PLACE is simply COMPANY MAN with a different title. It's not unusual for British publishers of an American author to use a different title than the one used in the US.

If you haven't read this book, I heartily recommend it. I loved this thriller, and I think it's probably Finder's best recent effort. It has the strongest character development and the most realistic plot of all his corporate thrillers.

If you like Harlan Coben, you should give Finder a try. I think Finder writes in a similar style, and is probably a little bit more original with his plotlines.

Book Description

This exceptional novel about family, love, and the innocence and terror of childhood was one of the most applauded and auspicious debuts of the last year. Compared by reviewers to Angela's Ashes and Wuthering Heights, The Hiding Place was the only debut work to be shortlisted for England's prestigious Booker Prize -- in the company of Kazuo Ishiguro and Margaret Atwood -- and went on to become a universally praised U.S. national best-seller. Set in a Maltese immigrant community in Cardiff, Wales, and peopled with sharp-edged, luminously drawn characters, The Hiding Place is the story of Frankie Gauci, his wife, Mary, and their six daughters. With her "unusual gift for letting her characters' interior lives come forth" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Azzopardi chronicles Frankie's unforgivable betrayal: gambling away his family's livelihood and eventually the family itself. The Gaucis' story is seen through the eyes of Dolores, the youngest daughter and the embodiment of bad luck in her father's estimation, condemned to bear the mark of a family that is rapidly singeing at the edges. Dolores presents an unsparing portrayal of the fear and hopelessness of childhood amid grim poverty and neglect, of children growing up without safety nets and on sunken foundations. Sustained by a tightrope tension and a stark, youthful wisdom, The Hiding Place conjures the coarse sensuality of life among the docks, the smoky cafes and bars, the crumbling homes and gambling rooms of Tiger Bay. "Astonishing and iridescent" (The Times, London), The Hiding Place is a mesmerizing exploration of how family, like fire, can shift suddenly from something that provides light and warmth to a dangerous conflagration, sparing no one in its path. "A harrowing and remarkably self-assured first novel [that] possesses all the immediacy and emotional power of a memoir...." -- Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money...........2005-12-10

After reading the other reviews, I felt compelled to warn the unwary and gullible people who believe them. This was her first novel, obviously, and in my opnion was atrocious. The characters are poorly created, and the only interesting person with any depth is the mother. I like my share of depressing novels, but this one really just bites the dust.

4 out of 5 stars (4.5) "Third degree damage".......2005-03-07

"My father's love is chance." Frank Gauci is a gambler of Sicilian-Maltese descent who has lost his half of a business and the decent home his family occupied. Now the family of two adults and six daughters live in a few crowded rooms in Cardiff, Wales, while Frank thoughtlessly loses the few possessions left and his wife, Mary, cope with what is left of her dreams. It is hard to imagine a more destitute world than that of the Gauci family.

This is the story of poverty, of the loss of family and the respect of strangers, when the weight of an indifferent world presses against hope until it is extinguished, leaving only despair in its wake. Yet, even in this hollow den of few comforts, a mother's love for her children is indestructible. Delores is born in 1960, another disappointment to Frank, who wishes for boys, only to be denied. When the new baby is burned in a kitchen fire, her left hand permanently disfigured, the family is driven deeper into a black despair. Delores senses the rampant emotions in her house, particularly the anger: "I am breast fed: I get rage straight from the source".

The few small rooms of their home are filled with growing bodies, with no hiding place. Tragedy strikes randomly, leaving all without privacy, sorting emotions that fly through the rooms with nowhere to land as the clamor of need presses the air from the dismal rooms. Four girls who sleep in one room with their mother know everything about each other, form alliances against the weaker ones, especially "the crip", and yearn for space. But even this desperate place is a home, where children form attachments and memories. A raging, cruel father is still a father, a mother meant to be a source of comfort, even as her mind is unraveling.

Eventually, the mother breaks down and the girls are given into foster care, the young girls who crowded the small rooms scattered to the winds, disentangling from sisterhood. Their poor, rattled mother cannot save her daughters from the daily violence that weaves the fabric of their lives. Delores is marked for failure, the badly deformed left hand ruined by the fire; Fran's scars are self-inflicted, a continuation of the beatings that marked her childhood, a self-tattoo etched on the inside of her arm; Celesta rises above the past, her husband's wealth a key to forgetfulness; Luca and Rose are embittered allies with shared disappointments and Marina has long disappeared.

"Children burnt and children bartered. Someone must be to blame." Finally, the girls gather at the death of their mother, Dol in the lead, as they dredge up the pain of years of betrayal, exposing the withered heart of a selfish father and the desperate soul of a mother who could not protect her children. The past must be purged of secrets, harrowing images, lost childhoods, broken promises and heartless reality.

This book is ferocious, unsparing in its honesty and relentless in search of the truth. The prose is adamant, impossible to ignore. That such a story can be told is a testament to the wisdom and courage of the author, her brilliant prose seductive, yet terrifying, awakening the monsters that root so easily in the soil of abject poverty. But the spirit of survival is not easily extinguished, the innocent, battered souls released to the light. Luan Gaines/2005.

3 out of 5 stars not bad, not great.......2004-06-14

The Hiding Place was a good book but it could have been better. Sometimes I had to read certain sentences or paragraphs over b/c I wasn't sure what was going on.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2003-05-01

I won't easily forget this book, which is a story about people and remembering people. The most gorgeous aspect of the writing is how a moment or a feeling becomes perfectly captured in brief, humble lines of prose. Azzopardi does not use long discursive explanations which are so often relied upon by authors. Each character becomes flesh and blood through short paragraphs and careful breaths. The sensitivty of the telling draws you in just as much as the tragedy of the story. I am grateful for writers who seek our imagination via the heart. Azzopardi appears to be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2003-04-29

As in the big world of prizes, The Hiding Place was also shortlisted for our book group's summer selection. I'm glad it wasn't chosen for our discussion as it left me a bit speechless.

T.A. gives you a perfectly drawn world. Her talented writing does not require long discursive explanation (yet the story is far from short). Anyone who appreciates the work of writers like Virginia Woolf would be touched by this novel, which analyzes memory and human nature. It has been described as a book about child abuse but more accurately, it's a book about people and remembering people.

I won't forget this one.

5 out of 5 stars This book is not a novel.......2007-09-30

One of the other reviewers indicated that this book is a novel, it is not! it was a true story, about a very brave Dutch family during WWII. It's the story of the only one who survived, and her devout belief in Jesus Christ, and how her faith carried her thru a horrible time, and sustained her. She was not young when she entered a concentration camp, and was 52 when she left. Her entire life before and after her time in a concentration camp, was a true testimony to God. I'm sure when she died in the early 80's God greeted her with a huge hug, and said "WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT"!

3 out of 5 stars Study Guide was Helpful.......2006-02-28

I purchased the study Guide for 'The Hiding Place' because I was reading the book over a period of several weeks and meeting to discuss it with a group of middle school girls. The study guide did a good job of summarizing the historical setting of the book and giving me some ideas for questions to generate discussion. Since my group does not have an academic goal in discussing the book, many of the questions about vocabulary definitions were not applicable to us.

5 out of 5 stars Great Devotional.......2007-08-23

This is a great tool in sharing with others how perseverence in Christ and sharing with others makes all the difference in a fallen world. May our hearts be ignited with the burning of the Spirit that Amy experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Amy Carmichael always touches my soul!.......2007-05-02

This little book is wonderful. I own many books by and about Amy Carmichael. Amy's writings are always encouraging, and her insights inspire me to strive for what she had--a PERSONAL and CLOSE relationship with God. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a little something extra added to their devotional time; you can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars a good devotional, especially if you are familiar with Amy Carmichael.......2006-07-09

The editor of this little book took 40 excerpts from the various books and writings of Amy Carmichael. At the end of each excerpt, the editor writes his own short prayer that goes along with the theme. These were meaningful daily devotionals for 40 days. They will probably mean more if you are familiar with the life of Amy Carmichael. (She was a missionary to India in the early 1900's.) For instance, some of the devotionals on suffering will certainly mean more to you if you are familiar with the suffering Amy went through in the final years of her life. Amy has "been there" and can speak from first hand experience...

I'd also recommend the biography of Amy called "A Chance to Die : The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael".

5 out of 5 stars You Are My Hiding Place.......2004-03-16

My mom gave me this book when I was in early high school. It spoke to me then as a young Christian, and it speaks to me now more than 15 years later. I go back to it every once in a while. It both challenges me and comforts me. I highly recommend this book. There are even small prayers at the end of each section that you can either pray yourself or help you begin your own prayer. I also spend time reading the verses surrounding the beginning verse of each chapter.

5 out of 5 stars You Are My Hiding Place.......2001-12-05

A friend of mine let me borrow this book. God spoke to me so much through it. I've never read anything other than the bible that was so real. She challenged me. This is a 40 day devotional, but sometimes I read 2 or 3 in one day. I cannot say enough about how great this book is. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful worship resource.......2007-03-08

The same amazing arrangements of the same wonderful songs that are heard on the "Hiding Place" CD. Contains the music for piano and vocals, as well as guitar chords, exactly as it is heard on the CD. I was blessed the day I listened to my first Selah song, and now I'm able to pass that blessing on to my church!

5 out of 5 stars The above reviewer is VERY mistaken.......2006-12-28

Hello! I am a member of Selah (I play the piano in the group)and feel that I must post an answer to the one-star review. The songbook DOES indeed contain all of the songs on the "Hiding Place" CD, and they are in the exact keys that we recorded them in (I should know!). I don't quite understand how this reviewer did not realize this, but I wanted to post to let anyone who might be considering buying this book know that it is accurate!

Thanks!

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed!.......2006-11-08

#1 The music isn't in the same key as the CD, which is common.
#2 All of the songs on the CD aren't in the songbook! There was no way to tell that on Amazon before I bought the book.
