Martha Raddatz does a good job of making you experience an episode in Iraq from the viewpoint of the soldiers. She lets them tell the story. Perhaps it would have been good to include more of her viewpoint or some corollary material but it is fine book as it is written and portrays an important story in this horrible war.

I don't ever write reviews on here but this is one of the best books I've ever read. Written from many different points of views between Iraq and the United States, it pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading. I have told all of my family and friends (and a few random people in the bookstore) they must read this book. it truely is phenomenal and makes me cry and support the soldiers and their families so much.

We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure for cancer. We think of remission as the only possibility. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. This is possible because in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. That mark was passed in December, 1992. the discovery of the cause and cure of all cancers has stood the test of time and here it is!

I tend to be very leery of books that promise any sort of "cure" or give false hopes. Although I had mixed emotions on this book, I do see how it can perhaps give hope to the most discouraged of cancer patients.
I don't think I'd recommend it to any of my cancer patients in general, but I do think that those of us in the medical profession might be able to pick out a few interesting parts and maybe recommend it to those few patients that are realistic but perhaps need a bit of encouragement with their diagonsis.
It was a quick read, though I tended to skip sections that bored me.

This book offers some very credible insights and a viable cancer treatment protocol. I have heard nothing but positive feedback, so far, from people who have tried this program, though the regimen is extreme (perhaps necessarily and certainly worth the effort) and there is some dispute as to the diet - she may allow too much carbohydrate/sugar. But I agree 100% with the rest of her protocol to fight fungus, heavy metals, etc. We live in a very toxic environment and will be lucky to live ¾ the lifespan of our parent, unless we learn ways of detoxing our bodies and changing our environment.
After over 20 years of medical research, one thing I have learned is that if you want to understand the processes leading to a particular medical condition, ask a scientist. Ask your doctor and you're likely to get a blank stare or a simplified (nonscientific and often illogical) explanation which will usually vary greatly from one doctor to the next. Simply put, doctors are NOT scientists and most certainly not nutritionists. (Would you trust a mechanic who didn't know what to put into your car's engine)?
I have left a doctor's office, on many occasion with my mouth agape. Their training comes directly from the pharmaceutical industry and it is sadly apparent to those who have their eyes open that if they don't have a drug for it or a surgery, you're doomed. If they DO have a drug for it, you are even more likely to be doomed, because you'll need a dozen other drugs to offset the effects of the first one. Don't forget that the #2 cause of death in this country is death by doctor, hospital or (legal) drug complications and that legal drugs are responsible for 40 times the number of deaths as illegal drugs, yet the allopathic community screams loudly about the dangers of alternative treatments though death at the hands of an alternative doctor wouldn't even begin to touch the number of deaths from Vioxx prescriptions alone (Vioxx killed my mother)!
Why do you think medical schools have a personality/psychological test for admission? They are looking for a certain type. Doctors, for the most part, tend to be good students, obedient and often without exceptional intelligence or creativity (there is indeed a vast difference between intelligence and good study habits, whereas the rare maverick doctor and great scientists tend to be the opposite - Einstein flunked kindergarten, was brilliant, creative and independent). It would astound most people if they were to be made aware of the inflated egos and insatiable ambition in the medical community - I have been appalled by the back-biting and outright plagiarism rife in their world. Many would rather sacrifice the lives of thousands than concede that their theories or failed methodologies have been incorrect all along and most of the rest are too afraid of losing their credibility via the powers that be (the AMA, FDA and other arms of the pharmaceutical cartel) and are intimidated not to speak up or try anything unconventional - they have seen what happens to those who dare to do so.
Be careful of the "established truth"...it usually lacks credibility. Pasteur got laughed out of the medical community, the doctor who suggested that obstetricians should wash their hands before delivering babies got banned and it took penicillin 30 years to be accepted by mainstream medicine. Idiots have always ruled the profession, all the way back to the barber/doctors - in fact I think they were wiser than today's counterpart - bloodletting, after all, is less dangerous than oxycontin or liposuction.
Now we have bogus "experts" paid by the cartels to debunk any cure that threatens the monopoly of big medicine (and oncology is BIG MONEY - in fact among the BIGGEST money in medicine). A couple of people on here (including a doctor) cited "Quackwatch" in order to debunk Hulda Clark. Just to give a taste of the witch-hunt that is going on today and who's behind it, read the following quote by the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation actually debunking the credibility of the leader of Quackwatch, and you'll understand the forces we are up against, as we strive to filter out the truth.

My brother has been given 1 year to live and offered no hope of recovery from his rare stage IV cancer, by the allopathic community. But, in spite of their admitted inability to do ANYTHING other than drug for pain, the AMA, the drug cartel and their Gestapo (the FDA) have such a lock on the cancer cash cow, we have no alternative unless we find some doctor who is brave enough to help (in spite of the threat of losing their license - not because any of them have ever harmed anyone, but because they are cutting into chemo-profits. We speak in cryptic tones reminiscent of backstreet abortion days and it is very clear why Hulda Clark needed to move her treatments to Mexico, as have some Nobel Prize winners who have been persecuted by our FDA and their bosses (most of the cures I have heard of first hand have come out of Mexico, though the FDA is starting to put pressure on the Mexican government). Sadly those same mobsters are the prevalent bully in most countries because the pharmaceutical cartel is bigger than the oil cartel, worldwide. Follow the money.
Now, when I see that someone has been run out of the country or scoffed at by the "big boys," I take a second look at their treatments, because they are obviously successful enough to threaten someone's profit margin. God bless the rare doctors and scientists who are willing to stick their necks out and actually heal people, in spite of the ridicule and threats of persecution.

I have three words of inquirey: ARE YOU SERIOUS? This is the single most incredible, non-credible hoax I have ever read in my entire life. Anyone who reads this book and takes a single word to heart is spitting in the face of scientifically proven fact! Furthermore, they are putting power into the hands of an unqualified "Doctor," allowing her to continue with her ridiculous stipulations about parasites, electronic detectors, and teeth pulling. May the world's forces band together against this woman before she decides that the best course of action to cure the common cold includes drinking drain-o.

The Jesus Family Tomb
The Jesus Family Tomb by Simcha Jacobovici and Charles Pellegrino reads like a murder mystery or a cheap spy thriller. It is interesting and holds the reader's attention despite a glaring misrepresentation of accepted investigative procedures. Jacobovici and Pellegrino have an agenda and the facts are made to fit.
There are several misleading and non-factual theories presented. The alleged "Jesus, son of Joseph" ossuary may actually be inscribed "Hanan" according to Dr. Stephen J Pfann, a noted expert in Semitic languages who agrees with ancient phonetic writing scholar, Dr. Rochelle Altmann, about the inscription on the alleged Jesus bone box.
There are also experts in disagreement with the so-called Mary Magdalene ossuary inscription. Both Richard Bauckman of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and Ben Witherington, a professor at Asbury Seminary in Kentucky, believe the inscription speaks of two people placed in the same bone box, a common practice in first century Judea.
The authors state that by statistical analysis the chances are 600 to 1 in favor of this being the Jesus Family tomb. However, the reliability of the assumptions made prior to the analysis, along with the way they are stated in words, is critical to the acceptability of the results of the analysis. Any statistical analysis that accepts disputed data and rhetorical debris-"In"-; will produce garbage-"Out."- What are the numerous assumptions accepted as fact concerning the ossuaries? This is the relevant analysis question to be addressed before the statistics are reviewed.
The use of DNA analysis in The Jesus Family Tomb provides a popular appeal in addition to a scientific aura. The subsequent DNA analysis of two ossuaries in the Talpiot tomb showed that they were not linked by DNA. However, there had been looters in the tomb and in the ossuaries. Dr. Ian Barnes of the University of London says that there is a good chance that "the DNA belongs to someone who excavated the tomb." It is totally absurd to do a mitochondrial DNA analysis on two ossuaries that have disputed inscriptions, (out of the ten ossuaries present in the Talpiot Tomb), then theorize that Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene were married and had a son, Judah.
"Patina" testing is a method of analyzing mineral deposits, which build up on artifacts over years to determine the archaeological origin of those artifacts. The James ossuary, displayed in 2002, is linked by Jacobovici and Pellegrino to the Jesus tomb by patina testing. The James bone box has a forged inscription which says "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus." Dr. Ronny Reich of Haifa University in Israel says that the inscription patina of James ossuary is fraudulent.
The most disturbing inconsistency in The Jesus Family Tomb is the selective reliance on New Testament scriptures. The genealogy of Mary is cited (Luke 3:23-38) as an example of numerous "Matthews" in Jesus' family. It is an attempt to rationalize the Matthew bone box and its auspicious presence in the Talpiot tomb (p.78). Jacobovici also cites Acts 1:23-26 as though it carries historical authority (p.78). He also quotes Mark 6:3 which names Joseph as one of Jesus' brothers. Jocobovici and Pellegrino use this canonical scripture to reference Joseph as historical fact (p.77). The authors quote the New Testament as authoritative in saying Philip was the apostle to the Greek-speaking Jews (p.206). Jocobovici quotes Mark 15:26 saying the Romans referred to Jesus as King of the Jews (p.90). The authors quote John 2:19 about Jesus claim to rebuild the temple in three days (p.28). The aforementioned citing are a sampling of Jocabovici and Pellegrino's selective splicing of their tale with New Testament scriptures which are, historically, the only support for their background information. No justification is presented for trusting certain texts over others. As illustrated above, the authors rely on certain portions of the accounts of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John while simultaneously ignoring other portions. It is an attempt to "have it both ways." The authors use the New Testament text (especially historical data), as support for their hypothesis while at the same time ignoring the message and contradicting the world- view of the whole New Testament canon.
Archaeologist Dr. Jonathan Reed, Professor of Religion at the University of La Verne says, "It's what I would call archeo-porn. It's very exciting, it's stimulating, you want to watch it, but deep down you know it's wrong."

First off, this isn't really a book about the alleged Jesus Family Tomb. Rather, it's about the making of the Discovery Channel special. If that kind of "behind the scenes" stuff interests you, you will probably enjoy this book.
I myself was rather disappointed with this book. I really wanted to see proof of a historical Jesus. Unfortunately the best the authors can come up with is the names on the tomb. Since the names "Jesus," "Joseph," and "Mary" were among the most common names at the time, that's not very compelling proof. Even the so-called "stastical analysis" presented is not very convincing. I felt like they brought director James Cameron aboard to lend some credibility to this project, knowing that they could not present any convincing proof.

Fiction or fact?.......2007-07-26
I read to be informed, inspired, entertained, amused, shocked, and hopefully, enlightened. It is hard to find a book that can encompass all of the above. But this book did just that.
Not only does the author claim to have found the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth, but that we also now have Jesus' DNA. The first thing that went through my mind was, you guessed it, can we bring Jesus, or a copy of him, back to life? After all, both Christianity and Islam claim that Jesus will come back to earth! Will this be the way?
More fascinating is that in the tomb were supposedly Jesus' wife Mary Magdalene and their son Judah. So were Jesus and Mary Magdalene married as has been proposed by many recent scholars (as well as by Dan Brown in The Da Vinci Code)?
If this is really the tomb of Jesus, how will this affect Christianity? And how will this affect Islam? According to Islamic belief, Jesus Christ did not die on the cross, and both his body and spirit were lifted to heaven in order for him to return again to earth before the Day of Judgment. According to Islam, Jesus' body is not on Earth, but in Heaven together with his spirit.
There are many skeptics to the claims in this book. The names in the tomb are common names. In the era of Jesus many were called Mary, Joseph, and Judah (the author does calculate the possibility of these names together and comes with a very convincing probability). Why would Jesus have a family tomb when such tombs were a practice of the wealthy, which Jesus was not? Why would his tomb be in Jerusalem, and not in his home town of Nazareth? If this is really the tomb of Jesus, why was it kept a secret throughout the centuries? The author does give his own opinion to those questions, and they are very convincing, but a more important question is how were Jesus' followers able to keep Jesus' tomb a secret when they kept burying Jesus' descendants in it. First, Jesus was buried, then his brother, then his wife, and probably his son last. Regardless of the sequence to the burials, all those burials and the tomb were kept a secret, especially when we are talking about a city with only about 100,000 citizens?
However, one has to keep an open mind and come to his own conclusions. I found the book very convincing, but I also found other books claiming that Jesus was buried in Pakistan and India just as convincing. So who is right? Or is no one right? Or are the scriptures alone right? But which scriptures are right, the Christian scriptures or the Islamic scriptures, which came later and attempted to correct the earlier misconceptions and errors in past religions?
The documentary and the subsequent book did anger a lot of people, and that was expected. A quick visit to amazon.com in this book review section will reveal very hostile people towards the author, which I personally don't think is right or moral. Worse than the simple hostile reviews are the threats against the author which forced him to seek police protection. Those threats forced the entire second printing of the book to be pulled from the shelves of bookstores, and sent back to the publisher. According to the author, "this was the first time in the entire history of American publishing, that a book was pulled from distribution while it was still on the New York Times Best Seller List, and that a film was pulled from a network while it was still ranking in the Neilsons as the highest rated show that the network had aired in nearly two years."
God is great! I love God, no matter what name one gives Him and no matter who His prophets or chosen religion is. I live by the universal MESSAGE of all religions, and if one looks carefully, it is all one and the same. The MESSAGE! The rest is interesting and historical, but the message is the core. We should concentrate on the message of Jesus and all live together peacefully and in the pursuit of other's happiness and well being!

Justin Johnson was raised in Georgia where boys are taught how to use a gun from an early age. Justin enlisted after 9/11. "Mom, things aren't good. It's scary. You wouldn't believe this place. It's messing with our heads. Mom, you just never know. There are kids, ten- to-twelve year-olds and they got machine guns. You don't know: are they friendly or are they the enemy."
Casey Sheehan was raised in California. Casey's mother discouraged her son from enlisting in the army. He was loyal and loved his country. She offered to take him to Canada so that he could avoid Iraq, but he declined.
Casey and Justin met at Fort Hood, Texas. The two became quick friends although they didn't have a lot in common. "Both were quiet, strong, patriotic, and God-loving young men." "Both young men prayed to God and hoped they would make it home to their moms and dads, sisters and brothers."
Justin and Casey were both killed by radical Muslims.
Joe Johnson wanted revenge on the terrorists. He signed up with a unit shipping to Iraq and "swore to God and to Justin that I would go to Iraq and kill as many of them as I could." Joe was filled with hatred. "I could kill all the insurgents and it would never bring Justin back, I don't think I'll really get anything out of it except for maybe that one moment of satisfaction when I finally kill somebody. But as far as long-lasting feelings of satisfaction, I don't think I'll find it in Iraq. There's hardly a day goes by that I don't wish I hadn't a spent more time with him."
Cindy Sheehan was also filled with hatred but she took it a different direction. "She blamed President George W. Bush for Casey's death and called the Muslim radicals who killed Casey and Just "freedom fighters." "Cindy posted herself outside the president's Crawford ranch. She became a media phenomenon, thanks to a campaign by well-paid media experts from the Left." Her grief and the media destroyed her family.
"A parent should never have to bury a child."
Catherine Moy & Melanie Morgan expressively share the tragic story of two young men killed in Iraq, two families torn apart. Moy and Morgan capture and convey the pain and anguish the families are suffering. I found myself in tears as I read this book. The bravery of Justin and Casey is celebrated on these pages. I want to be careful not to state an opinion of the actions of the families for I would not add to their pain. After reading this book, the deaths become more than a news story. This book gives Justin and Casey a face and brings them into you heart. This book describes the divide in American opinion concerning the War on Terror. Regardless of which side of the divide you stand we must never forget the young men and women who are fighting this war. Ms Moy and Morgan are to be commended on their presentation of the heroic lives of these two young men. I highly recommend "America Mourning" to all.
Unfair to both sides.......2007-03-02
This book is one of the saddest pieces of "journalism" I have ever read. It is a smear job on both families. Not just Sheehan, but the ridiculous amount of personal stuff thrown out there on the Jackson's makes the reader wonder: What does any of this have to do with argument? All in all, a book that appears to be profiting from the death of two brave men. I am thoroughly appalled by the words and tactics of the authors. I am apolitical, so maybe I didn't enter this book with the frame of mind necessary to feel good about the dragging through the mud of two brave and decent soldiers families. Is this what they fought and died for? Flat ridiculous.

I mostly read just Stephen King books, but this book was one that I had heard about and decided to purchase. I was very glad to read about one family that cared so much for their son that his father enlisted to avenge his son's death. Unfortunatly, reading about Cindy Sheehan only wanted me to get a gun and shoot her. She did nothing but lie and kept her family from mourning their son's death. I really enjoyed this book.

If the authores would of just stuck with the story it would of been a 5 star for me. It had too many political judgements but all in all it was a good story. I heard they are thinking of making a movie out of this book. That I would like to see but I hope they focus more on the Soldiers and not so much on the politics.

Good book about the rich out of touch with the rest of us..........1999-07-25
Some interesting parallels between the Busches and the Kennedys... Kind of ironic that while Budweiser is the drink of the working class and blue-collar people, the Busches seem completely out of touch with them...but that isn't surprising: most rich people live in a different world... August Busch IV, the current head of A-B, comes off as a pretty seady, unsavory character... Unprosecuted vehicular manslaughter and fleeing from St. Louis police... Would be interesting to get the take of natives of St. Louis as to the influence of the Busches... Willing to bet they have the run of the roost...

This book was one of the few memoirs I have written when in the end I placed the book down and sighed "wow." What a wonderful story. The author rolled experiences together in western Montana with his dad and grandmother and turned it into a lovestory for fathers and grandmothers, for people of Montana, and all that using very little dialogue. (That gave the book a sense of truthfulness, as who can recite full conversations that took place years ago?)
The constant struggle with man against nature, man against man and man against himself come alive in these pages. Montana and its bittersweet closeness never leave the reader; its isolation and wide open sky are always in the background. Thus the title is so perfect for this beautiful memoir.
This was my first Doig book and I will definitely read more of him. I definitely consider this book one of the top ten in American 20th century writing.

This is my all time favorite book. Period. Beautifully written, thought-provoking. It will make you want to move to Montana. It will make you love open sky and a horizon that goes on forever and the importance of family.

This was my first Ivan Doig book, and I loved it! As a result, I've read most of the rest of what Doig has written and thoroughly enjoy reading about (and remembering) the areas of Montana where I used to live.

As soon as I started reading This House of Sky, I fell into Ivan Doig's world. By the end I was so mesmerized by his wonderful language and vivid characters that I was wandering around the house with the book up to my nose, bumping into things, trying to do chores one-handed while reading. I would never have believed that a book that starts out with the gasping, hideous suffocating death of one of the author's parents and ends with the gasping, hideous suffocating death of the other one could contain such boundless love of family, such joy, and such beauty. Doig's vivid writing shades perilously close to poetry, and he has an eye for the perfect anecdote to illustrate his point. Doig evokes in the endless drudgery of Montana ranch life a heroic struggle, and turns his hardworking, mercurial father into one of the great figures of modern literature. As a chronicle of Doig's childhood and its end and of the Montana sheepherding life in the early parts of this century, This House of Sky is a spectacular success; but as a tribute to his beloved family and especially his father, the book is a powerfully moving classic.

My prep for going to Rwanda was reading this book. This is a snapshot of the state Rwanda was in during the 100 days and the aftermath. However, much has been done to repair the damage. This is a time of reconciliation and healing. Go to Rwanda and see for yourself. It will change your life.

What a great book. Such insight and it really helps you understand what happened in Rwanda. Especially the history of all the long ago violence and things that have happened over the years. Great book and a must read for everyone.
This could happen everywhere or anywhere in the world. Can really open your eyes into how much we all could be killers or saviors at any one time.

The Heartbreak of Hate.......2007-04-10
Gourevitch's jarring telling of the atrocities of hate hit with an imact of severe sorrow. The overwhelming scale of the murders in Rwanda are incomprehensible. It is sad to realize that in this age people allow hate and propoganda to rule their lives.

Heartbreaking stories from Rwanda.......2007-03-19
This is a superb book, a collection of interviews and incidents from the genocide in Rwanda. There are portraits of unimaginable betrayal, brutality and horror, but also of heroism--the owner of the Hotel Rwanda, for instance. The description of the conduct of the "refugee" camps is particularly useful as a warning on what is likely to happen in the next crisis, and should force us to re-examine our ways of providing relief for people in distress across the world.

Everyone Should Read.......2007-10-04
I am so sorry that I did not read this book 5 years ago. It explained why my mom behaves the way that she does. I think that everyone needs to read this because there is not a person alive that does not or will not love someone who has dementia or Alzheimers. It gives medical information that is easy to understand as well as ways to best deal with their loved one. It reassures the caregiver that they need to take care of themselves and it helps them to realize that thier loved one still loves them but is sometimes unable to show it in acceptable ways.

For those of us who are caregivers, this book is a lifesaver. Before reading this book I was certain that many of the behaviors that my family member exhibits were unique to her. While I often read about Alzheimer's, I never read anything that made me stop and realize that, first, I am not alone, and second, that there are ways that I can handle situations better. This book is full of great suggestions on how to deal with the many behavioral issues that are exhibited by those with Alzheimer's and dementia.
Whenever I have an especially difficult day, I go online to the Alzheimer's page and remind myself how difficult it is for my family member. This book drove home that message, yet more importantly provided me with some tools on how to deal with these issues. I cannot stress enough how much I thought our situation and the behaviors were unique; it is liberating to realize that they are not. As well, understanding why the person exhibits such behaviors makes it much easier to respond correctly.
I wish I could thank the authors personally for this book. I hope they both know that their wisdom, concern and awareness of the Alzheimer patient has made a difference for me, and I am certain has made a difference for many others.
Caregivers -- buy this book, you will find some stress greatly diminished.

I can not stress enough just how helpful and informative this book is. My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease 6 years ago. In those 6 years we have seen numerous doctors, taken numerous tests, spoke to many Social Workers, Home Health Aides, etc. NO ONE gave me the advice, information, suggestions, help, etc., anywhere near as well and thorough as "The 36 Hour Day".
I think so highly of this book and recommend it so much; that just last week, I had a meeting with the Director of Nursing, Head Nurse, and Social Worker at the nursing home where my Dad resides. I highly recommended this book and told the Dir. Of Nursing, it should be mandatory reading for anyone working in the facility.
If you have a loved one or are a care taker of someone with Alzheimer Disease---RUN do not walk, to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of this book.

The author kept you interested all the way through the book and even though you already know the outcome, you are hoping for a better ending. Great read by Robert Alexander. I am now going to read Rasputin's Daughter by Robert Alexander.

Coincidentally, the day I started this book there was a news announcement that the graves of the missing Romanov children had possibly been discovered. I should have known that it was a good omen! I had been looking for a novel about the Romanovs for some time and this hit the mark. THE KITCHEN BOY is a wonderful mix of fact and fiction and a valuable history lesson, too. Mr. Alexander did an outstanding job of turning turbulent times and a tragic event into an entertaining novel that I couldn't put down. So believable that I had to convince myself that the fictional mystery ending really didn't happen - or did it? Simply wonderful!

Romantic fantasy but decent reading.......2007-07-05
Knowing little about Russian history, it was interesting to me that R.Alexander was able to weave certified history into his romantic fantasy of a novel. I felt pushed to learn more about Russian history, but not to repeat reading this novel or other books by R. Alexander, I am sorry to say. This book was reviewed by a small book group that I belong to. The ladies all felt the same way about the novel. On the whole, looking at subjects that came to us when reading the book, we were astonished at the sheer waste of money on Romanov jewels and the terrible waste of millions of lives. Also, once again, we were sad that Russia has never managed to be anything but an autocratic society, whether the Tsars or the Communists rule. We hope for better government of that large land of such wonderful potential.
That Night in Yekaterinburg.......2007-07-04
Over the years, many books, both fiction and non-fiction, have been written about the events of July 16-17, 1918. On that date, in the town of Yekaterinburg, the Russian royal family met their fateful end.
Misha Semyonov is an elderly Russian man who is living in the suburbs of Chicago's north side. Nearing the end of his own life, he begins to record a tape for his granddaughter, Kate, detailing what he knows about the Romanov family. Misha, it turns out, was the kitchen boy in the House of Special Purpose in Yekaterinburg. He served the last tsar and his family, and through his recounting of the events leading up to their death, he paints a detailed picture of the last days of Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children.
But the story doesn't end there. The innocent kitchen boy's account of the night's events explains the disappearance of two of the Romanov bodies (those of tsarevich Alexei and his sister, Maria), as well as what happened to the bodies of the family. But along the way, Misha covers his own tracks, and it is only through Kate's investigating skills that his big secret is revealed.
Robert Alexander does an excellent job painting the anxiety and uncertainty of those last few weeks in Yekaterinburg. The novel is vivid, with many Russian phrases (and their English translations), notes that can be found in the Russian Archives, and the picture of a loving family confused by their sudden change in circumstances.
To be honest, the novel reads a bit like "The Diary of Anne Frank," though not quite as candid. However, it is an excellent theory into the murders that ended Russian imperialism and changed the face of the world forever.

I received this book for my birthday last year and still enjoy looking at it. In fact, I was getting ready to order it for a friend for the holidays when I saw an earlier review of this book that also mentioned another vacation home book called Second Home, I bought it, too. I highly recommend both books. This is wonderful dream book, as is Second Home. Second Home also includes pointers (throughout the book) on deciding where you might want to have a second home, real estate shopping tips, and ideas on building and decorating, too. Second Home is as inspiring as Family Houses by the Sea, but it offers the bonus of being practical and talking directly to me about what I can do to actually realize my dream of having a weekend house.

We are accumulating a wonderful little stack of books related to second homes as we plan a getaway of our own. This one is a favorite because of its dreamy photography. I also highly recommend SECOND HOME: Finding Your Place In The Fun, which is a new book that mixes dreamy photos of real homes with some helpful tips on finding a location as well as buying, building, remodeling, or decorating a second home. Like Family Houses, Second Home is a larger hardback book. Gorgeous.

And therein lies the beauty of this book. Yes, some of the homes are older & some are rustic-but there's the sleek & contemporary too. In other words, something for everyone who loves to live by the water (or wishes they did). Buy this book to appreciate the different ways to express loving the natural light & atmosphere in a home that is reflective of the sea. You may not get Decorating Lessons 1-100 - but thats not the point. You can escape thru this book, dream thru it, share it, admire those who have created beautiful spaces in beautiful places - without displaying every obvious "seaside" nic-nac but with much good taste & class. Buy it for those pleasures & of knowing that kind of life does exist & can be lived by those to whom it means the most. To the authors - a beautiful volumn - thank you for seeking these places out & creating an arm chair trip to some incredibly beautiful spots by the water.

A beautiful book that captures what it feels, smells and looks like to live by the sea. If you want glitzy resort style houses then this book is not for you. The houses shown are not show cases for a glossy magazine but places filled with memories and life. It's my favourite beach house book.
Seaside Fantasies Brought to Life.......2000-06-30
This book was my inspiration for a beach house I just finished completely cosmetically rehabilitating. The book took me all the way through the process by stimulating me with the beautiful visuals of its photos. I would look through it repeatedly, looking one time at flooring, another at windows, and so on, depending on where I was in my rehab process. I can't imagine it not being a superb stimulus for anyone.
