Book Description
Get Ready to Run!
A complete guide to training for a half or full marathon in sixteen weeks, this book follows the format of TomÂ's previous book The 12-Week Triathlete with simply the best advice on how to run your fastest race while staying injury-free. Whether you are a first-time marathoner, trying to set a new "PR" or looking to qualify for Boston, this book is for you.
"TRAIN LESS AND RUN YOUR BEST"
Some worry that running a marathon will involve hours upon hours of training each week. Others fear that they will become injured. Some veteran marathoners have followed other training plans and experienced both, but TomÂ's approach is much different. His philosophy of "train less, run your best" will amaze you whether you are running your first marathon or fiftieth. Exercise physiologist and sports performance coach Tom Holland -- an elite endurance athlete himself and sub-3 hour marathoner who has run in more than fifty marathons, three ultramarathons, and a dozen Ironman triathlons around the world will teach you how to properly gear up and train in the sixteen weeks prior to your half or full marathon. So when that starting gun sounds, you'll be equipped with invaluable tips and techniques that will put you in position to run the best race of your life.
The Marathon Method provides you with everything you need to know including:
- Easy-to-understand advice on nutrition, hydration, and gear
- Customized training plans for beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners
- Advice on the mental side of running and how to make your mind go that extra mile
- Strategies to avoid hitting the infamous 'wall'
- Tips on pacing, injury prevention, strength training, flexibility, and much more!
Customer Reviews:
Good program.......2007-10-08
I used the advanced marathon training program in this book to cut my marathon time in 4 months from 3:45:17 in Prague to 3:13:55 in Berlin. I ignored his strength/core workout and did the performance training program from [...] instead on strength and core days. This book was excellent for me. The only disappoinment for me was the lack of detailed information on the mysterious taper period before the race day. Two thumbs up though.
Great book with lots of practical advice...........2007-08-28
This is a very simple and straightforward book on preparing for your first marathon. It is systematic and easy to follow. If you haven't run this far before and you are intimidated, this will help you to get over it.
It may sound like a strange suggestion, but I also recommend Making a Change for Good: A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline. This later book has a nice 30 day retreat in the back that will help you with your mental game. If you don't know what I mean, you will once you start running those long distances.
With respect to my background, I was an all state runner in my late teens and ran a lot of long distance events in my 20s. I also have a graduate education in physiology and biochemistry and worked with another person in training athletes in my late twenties. Since then, I have had back and neck injuries and don't do a whole lot of running. However, I'm thinking of wading back into this stream and the gentle approach put forward here seems scientifically sound, easy to follow and simple.
I had a knee injury that was chronic when I was about 12. I got into running because I had a lot of trouble walking and was overweight. Running helped me to get over this injury, restore my self confidence and realize the power of the mind and relationship between the mind and body. This is my current pursuit and passion. Literally, a doctor told my mother I wouldn't be running and would be wearing a splint, she passed away a few years ago... but she showed me the power of intention, commitment, etc. That is not to say everyone can do anything, but most of the time I believe we limit ourselves.
If you have injuries I advise you to talk to your health care provider before taking up running. It also a good idea from a cardiovascular point of view... remember Jim Fix?! However, most people who are reasonably health can run a marathon if they train systematically. Good luck on running your first... and many thereafter. I hope to do one again sometime soon as well.
My review.......2007-08-16
Just what I was looking for in terms of detail, easy-read...everything I wanted to know as a first time marathon runner.

Product Description
The ability to read law well is a critical, indispensable skill that can make or break the academic career of any aspiring lawyer. Fortunately, the ability to read law well (quickly and accurately) is a skill that can be acquired through knowledge and practice. The sooner the student masters these skills, the greater the rewards. Using seven specific reading strategies, reinforced with hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter, this book shows students how they can read law efficiently, effectively, powerfully, and confidently. Reading Like a Lawyer is divided into 3 parts: * Part I introduces the reader to the fundamentals of legal reasoning upon which law-based reading builds; * Part II introduces the reader to concrete strategies for reading effectively in law school; * and Part III teaches strategies for reading law outside of the law school context.

Becoming a lawyer.......2007-09-17
I bought this book for my wife as she was getting ready to start law school in the fall of 2007. Prior to buying this book, she had taken a summer enrichment class aimed at developing the skills necessary to succeed in her first year in law school. My wife read this book after finishing her summer class and before the actual start of her real classes; she did this following one of her professor's advice. Well, she is glad she did! Everything she had done in class was referred to in the book, plus further tips on how to be on top on her law school assignments. So, if you have decided to go to law school, this is the book you need to ace your first year!!
I, myself, am a lawyer too, and I know what a head start she has accomplished.
Mandatory Reading For Law Students -- Critical Reading Curriculum Instructor, Phillip G. Hubbard Law School Preparation Program.......2007-07-20
When I was asked to teach the "critical reading curriculum" at The University of Iowa's Phillip G. Hubbard Law School Preparation Program, I researched methodically to find a text that would be "on point" as they say in the legal world. Ruth Ann McKinney's Reading Like A Lawyer is just that. Written in an engaging and easy to read style, McKinney teaches prospective and current law students all the skills necessary to successfully understand a variety of legal documents. These skills include learning to brief a law case and analyze casebook law, learning how to decipher the complexities of analyzing statutes, and discovering how to read legal cases outside a law classroom's casebook. The strength of McKinney's text is that she provides you with real edited casebook cases, real-world statutes, and real non-casebook (i.e. unedited) cases, ready for the reader to read first-hand. McKinney then supplies the student with a list of questions to help them hone valuable legal reading skills. After a student finishes learning how to read a case, and then reads it, a highlighted and annotated version of the same legal case appears, wherein McKinney demonstrates the areas in the case that are important and should have been identified as important by the reader. Reading these annotated cases is akin to entering the mind of an experienced high level attorney as s/he reads and analyzes a case. When I brought McKinney's Reading Like A Lawyer to the attention of the Dean of Students at The University of Iowa's School of Law, Dean R. Chayce Ramey, I was delighted to learn that he often recommends McKinney's text to law students, and that he himself refers to it when teaching legal skills. I was surprised to see so few reviews of McKinney's text, and I suspect part of the reason is that this is one book many competitive law students would like to keep a secret. Well, the secret's out of the bag -- McKinney's book is an outstanding must read for all prospective and current law students!

I may not be the most unbiased reviewer (I want to UNC Law and know Ruth well) but this is one of the best, if not THE best, book to help law students get through their first days of law school. I use the book myself (I also teach law) and it has the best skill-building exercises I have used. As a legal writing collegue of mine said, "Ruth should walk around with a tiara all day--she really is the queen of legal writing!"
Incredible book. If you buy one book before starting law school to help you prepare for your first semester, this should be it.

Exquisite cookbook with only one fault ..........2002-11-22
First of all this book ain't cheap so I was rather disgusted that if you exclude the cover it contained not one single picture .... OK so it may be hard to take a picture of pasta sauce bubbling in a skillet but .....
Now for the good part ... recepies in this book are stupendous and many are quite unique with some equisite new flavours for pasta sauce that I think I've been making for over 30 years or so.
Although the book is titled 'while the pasta cooks' and its true that all the sauces are whipped together in a pan or wok the intriguing flavours presented by the authors usually will require some planning and a stop at your local supermarket ....
The flavours presented in many of these recepies are so unique, do not fall into the tempatation to either skip or subsitiute ingredients because the simplicity of the recepies makes them very very unique .... nuff said ...
Appart from my whining about the pictures this is one great cookbook ....
The best pasta sauce recipes!.......2002-03-13
This book is awesome! It sits on my counter and I use it on a weekly basis. My friends have quit asking my for my pasta recipes as they assume it is all from this book - they are usually correct.
short and simple recipes - the way they should be!.......2001-06-20
Recipes so short you can make them in the time it takes to cook a pot of pasta. And if they are that short how complicated can they be? These are easy recipes.
Great for when you get home, tired and hungry, and need to cook. Simple, interesting, tasty and best of all fast recipes that won't let you starve while you wait for dinner.
Great variety, easy prep, good sauces.......1998-08-28
I can't believe this book is out of print! It is a great cookbook to have around, because the sauces are so quick to prepare. I've also found the recipes very forgiving, if you don't have exactly the same ingredients.
A must have for busy people........1997-08-01
This is a great cookbook for those who do not enjoy spending all day in the kitchen, but who still want a great meal. I have enjoyed every recipe that I have tried

Book Description
The turbulence Christian kids face today while at school, on the job, and with their friends is enough to make any mom apprehensive. Practically everywhere your children turn, their values are undermined and right and wrong are decided by what "feels good." Respect for life has given way to demands for abortion and the "right" to die. And the media, with its slick, glitzy magnetism, promotes both destructive values and dangerous lifestyles to your kids.
But, moms, you are the first, best line of defense against this cultural tide. And here in this book are teaching strategies, learning activities, and resources--all to help you pass on a Christian worldview so that your children can confidently navigate the rapids of life with the steadfast truths of God.

Customer Reviews:
Essential tool for Christian parents to equip their children to engage the culture for Christ!.......2006-10-05
An absolutely fabulous book - really a "must read" for all Christian parents who want to prepare their children to effectively engage the world for Christ. A Houston-area mom, Arrington does a great job of addressing the fundamental issues that children are facing today - a post-modern and post-Christian culture that is bombarding them with powerful messages contrary to God's revealed truth. So what's a parent to do? Arrington doesn't hide her head in the sand waiting for the rapture; she systematically lays out a plan to equip her family with the answers to the issues they will face in the world using Scripture as her guide.
When I was reading this book, I was constantly reminded of Psalm 127:3-5 where it states:
"Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate."
~ Psalm 127:3-5
I've seen this verse in countless places, but never have I seen the last sentence included. The last sentence tells me that our children will contend with enemies in the gate and that if they are prepared, equipped, and trained, they will not be put to shame. World Proofing Your Kids is an essential tool in the equipping process of our children!
Arrington begins with a basic worldview primer and then dives into various cultural issues from abortion to animal rights and the "right to die" movement. She also addresses the entertainment culture and its profound effect on today's young people. I thought her approach to this issue was the best chapter in the entire book - instead of avoiding all media or cursing TV for its filth and smut, Arrington gives alternatives to the brain-drain of TV seeking to produce depth and understanding resulting in a mind that is not easily amused and is armed to see and counter the lies of the culture.
Arrington writes with a great balance of humor and truth mixed with a healthy dose of personal experience that makes this book easy to relate to and understand as a parent. She is not writing this from the ivory tower of perfect parenting; she reveals her own shortcomings and struggles along the way - but she also clearly communicates that equipping our children for the challenges and opportunities of this cultural crisis will take diligence and determination on our part as parents.
Required Reading for Christian Parents!.......2000-06-13
Not only is this an exceptional book to help parents teach truth and wisdom to our kids, it's also instructive to the parents. . .and a true pleasure to read! Lael has a marvelous, warm sense of humor as well as an astute ability to analyze and teach. I was so impressed with this book I wrote a week's worth of radio programs on it, the transcript of which is online...
Focus on the Family gives a definite thumbs-up!.......1999-06-11
Here in Worldproofing Your Kids are the teaching strategies, learning activities and resources--all to help you pass a Christian worldview to your children. FOF Magazine, April 1998

This is a damned good book.......2005-08-02
I have many books about speaking, presenting, etc.; most of which are singularly unhelpful. This book gives great, practical advice ~ and, if you follow it, you will give a damn good speech. Buy it. Use it.
No Kidding - With This Book You Can Give A Great Speech.......2005-01-09
If you must speak to a crowd greater than one - then you need this book. This book has it all. The author has done extensive research and has read thousands of speeches in preparation for this book. If you want to be the best you can be at public speaking, at selling yourself and your ideas, this book will be your best friend.
As explained by the author here are some of the basics of a good speech:
1. Identify your topic and goal
2. Write your opening line
3. Identify a few key points
4. Support your key points
5. Wrap it up with a summarizing conclusion
Go beyond a basic outline as explained by the author:
1. Acknowledge your audience
2. Take a moment to define your terms
3. Clarify your qualifications
4. Address audience biases
5. Tell them what you are going to talk about
6. Tell the audience why they should care
7. Back up your points with stories
8. Back up your points with facts
9. Back up your points with history
10. Build strong transitions
11. Wrap it up
12. Include a call to action
13. Conclude with the beginning
The book gives the reader 100 fantastic openings for the reader to choose from in preparing his/her own speech. In addition, the book provides the reader with a list of 250 great quotations to choose from in writing a speech. Also, the book provides the reader with an almanac which provides happenings on each date of the year which the speech writer can include when the date the speech is to be given is known.
Really good book to help prepare my speech.......2004-06-17
The outline in this book is better than many others I have seen. I was able to put my speech together much quicker and in a more organized fashion with this book. Great Reference to have in your personal library.
Lot of useful advice!.......2003-03-25
You'll get a lot of useful advice from HOW TO GIVE A DAMN GOOD
SPEECH by Philip R. Theibert, a professional speech writer . . . and regardless of your level of experience in this field, you'll find something that will be of value here.
There's excellent material on how to organize and write a speech, followed by 100 important things you need to know about giving an effective speech . . . I also liked the author's collection of "best" quotations, along with his compilation of 365 ideas relating to historical dates and events that can be weaved into your speech . . . best of all: he shows you how!
Here's just some of the material that caught my attention:
A baseball legend's rules for a long life
Satchel Paige, a famous baseball pitcher of indeterminate age, once offered his rules for a long life:
* Avoid fried meats, which angry up the blood.
* If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.
* Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.
* Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society. The social rumble ain't restful.
* Avoid running at all times.
* Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you.
I'd like to add another rule onto that list. And that one is: Avoid speaking to a group for more than 10 minutes. A long talk might anger up the audience's blood. So today, let me--very briefly--talk about . . .
Use Elvis . . . he always gets a laugh
Well, I know you have to be very cautious about making predictions. Especially when you predict where things are going to be five years from now. For example, in 1973, there were 457 Elvis impersonators in America. In 1993, there were 2,736 Elvis impersonators in America. If this trend continues, by the year 2000 one out of four Americans will be an Elvis impersonator.
Tip O'Neill, US Congressman and former speaker of the House of
Representatives, enjoyed telling the story of the only election he ever lost. As a very young man, he ran for the city council in his hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts. After his defeat, the elderly lady who lived next door said she had voted for him even though he had never bothered to ask for her vote. O'Neill was surprised. He pointed out that he had shoveled her snow every winter. Cut her grass every summer. Couldn't he just assume that he had her vote? But the woman just looked at him and said: "Tip, people like to be asked."
This is GREAT!.......1999-08-27
I bought this book to help me give my first corporate speech. Not only did I give a damn good speech, but every aspect of my communicating life has been improved. I use Theibert's methods for giving speeches, writing, phone calls, and daily conversations. Now I feel more comfortable communicating, whatever the situation.

Wrong Book.......2007-06-08
I ordered the book that is associated with this review. However, when the book arrived, it had a different cover and didn't have the same recipes as I'd anticipated. I had originally checked the book out from my local library prior to deciding on purchasing it. Although the format is the same, I am somewhat disappointed that I didn't receive what I'd actually ordered. I didn't send it back due to the book container other good recipes.
More of The Same 'Ol, Same 'Ol........2007-05-21
If you have any of the prior published versions, there is nothing new in this current one that justifies the purchase.
One-a-Month Cooking.......2007-02-15
This is a very practical guide for big-batch cooking. I learned a lot of helpful techniques and the recipes were practical and intice my trying them. It gave lots of guides for shopping and organizing your cooking day.
Love it !!!.......2007-02-15
I love this cookbook. I love the idea of cooking once a month. I did this before when my children were young and scaled it down to once a week at first. Then worked my way up to once a month. The recipes are easy to follow. You can work your own recipes into the cooking day and now that my daughters are grown and married I decided to get a new copy for myself and one for each of them. Cook everything in one day, and take a great meal out of the freezer every day for a month! What could be better than shopping once and having meals for 31 days? You can't beat this idea.
Absolute time saver!.......2007-01-22
I have used this cookbook for over 20 years, and absolutely love it! When I don't have time to cook, I have something in the freezer that beats fast food. It helped me survive baseball season, dance, soccer, and all the kids activities! It will now help as I pursue an advanced degree. I highly recommend this cookbook. (I will say that 2 people in the kitchen is a must on a cooking weekend.)

Customer Reviews:
The author is my father.......2007-08-02
Given the obvious conflict of interest, I would rather not have given a rating, though I think the book is very clear and useful. Others have thought so too: it has been published in many languages and on many continents, and continues to sell year after year, as the publishers keep asking my father to work on new editions.
The book is organized as a series of case studies (the names have been changed to protect the 'innocent') of people who started businesses, the problems they faced, their attempts (successful or otherwise) to cope with them, and their excitement as they realize they are actually succeeding.
The focus of the book is on how to write a business plan in such a way as to persuade a bank to lend you money. This is often one of the first problems a budding entrepreneur faces, which is fortunate because writing the plan forces him/her to think about the problems likely to face him, and to plan for success.
