Book Description
In his runaway bestseller BIAS, former CBS News correspondent Bernie Goldberg took us behind the scenes and exposed how the liberal media distort the news. In 100 PEOPLE WHO ARE SCREWING UP AMERICA, Bernie took on the villains who are doing their best to cheapen our culture and wreck our country.
Now, in CRAZIES TO THE LEFT OF ME, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT, Bernie speaks for the millions of Americans who are saying: Enough!
Enough of the leftist lunatics like Rosie O'Donnell who think "Radical Christians" – whatever that means – are "as big a threat to America as Radical Muslims." Enough of the hyperbolic liberal rhetoric comparing Bush to Saddam, Abu Ghraib to the Stalinist gulag, and Mel Gibson to Hitler. Enough of the military–hating crazies who run San Francisco. ("Just what this country needs," Bernie writes, "a city with Rice–A–Roni and a foreign policy.") Enough of the hyper–partisan, ultra–PC liberal media, which often seems more sympathetic to the "victims of humiliation" at Abu Ghraib than to our troops who are dying at the hands of Iraqi fundamentalists.
And enough, too, Bernie declares, of the wimps on the right –– the gutless wonders who don't have the courage to stand up for their own principles. Enough of their pandering, trolling for votes, and outspending the Democrats.
Conservatives still believe in important things, Bernie argues, but the jury is out on the Republicans. The 2006 election was a wake–up call, and Bernie warns: If the wimps on the right fail to regain their courage, recover their principles, and reclaim their sense of fiscal responsibility, the crazies on the left just might win the White House in '08.

At last, a book for BOTH Democrats and Republicans!.......2007-10-11
Some folks think I'm a liberal Democrat, but the truth is that
I try to look at all sides of an issue--and even vote Republican
at times . . . consequently, I find myself reading books
that represent all viewpoints of the political spectrum.
Bernard Goldberg is an author I've read and enjoyed in
the past . . . his BIAS got me thinking, always a good
sign, and I found it a fair treatment of how news is presented
by the media.
In his latest effort, CRAZIES TO THE RIGHT, WIMPS TO THE
RIGHT, Goldberg comes
through again . . . he skewers both political parties, as evidenced
by the book's subtitle: HOW ONE SIDE LOST ITS MIND
AND THE OTHER LOST ITS NERVE.
Though Goldberg was initially Democratic, he became
Republican . . . yet what's so great about his writing is that
it is actually quite balanced and doesn't leave you with
the impression that he is doing a hatchet job, in that
what he says presents a factual basis for many
of his opinions.
For example, I liked this one example:
* In another election, San Franciscans voted--60 percent to 40
percent--to ban military recruiters from their public schools.
Funny, I thought liberals were the ones who were always telling
us that "choice" is a good thing. I guess that only applies to
abortions; not to choosing whether or not you want to let students
listen to a military recruiter talk about a career with the army, navy,
air force, or marines. And even though the vote is "only"
symbolic--officially, it's nonbinding--it does tell us how these people
feel about being citizens of the United States of America.
In addition, I liked his use of humor [inventing a proposed new game
show] to drive home a serious point:
* Okay, one senator down, ninety-nine to go. Bob Barker opens the
drum door again, reaches in, and pulls out another name. This
time he announces to the audience, "Robert C. Byrd"-a politician
who, not for nothing, has been given the name "King or Pork" by
Citizens Against Government Waste. You see, everything in West
Virginia is named after Robert Byrd. Everything. And guess who
paid for all of it? You did!
In case you're wondering just where your money went, here's a
very short list of the pork Byrd brought home. There's the Robert
C. Byrd Expressway, the Byrd Aerospace Tech Center, the
Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse, the Robert C. Byrd Industrial
Park, the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing,
the Robert C. Byrd Bridge, the Robert C. Byrd addition to the lodge
at Oglebay Park, the Robert C. Byrd Library, the Robert C. Byrd
Hilltop Office Complex, and about a million more Robert C. Byrd
Projects that would require a lot more pages to list.
Lastly, although I didn't find myself agreeing with all his
points, many of them got me to revisit some of my previously-held
beliefs, such as this one on conservatism:
* There are important reasons, I think that conservatives got feisty
and started throwing their weight around. Liberals started it! Religious
conservatives only became a political force after liberals began
imposing their vision of morality on society. Liberals are the ones,
after all, who thought it was a good idea for grade school kids to put
condoms on bananas. So evangelicals responded with their own
version of sex in the classroom: lectures on abstinence. Same with
same-sex marriage: Conservative Christians never thought about
banning it until liberals came up with the idea of legalizing it.
Regardless of your political affiliation, I strongly encourage you to
read CRAZIES TO THE RIGHT, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT . . . one thing
I guarantee is that you won't be bored!
Fun read, scathing for both parties.......2007-10-07
If you are a conservative angry with being betrayed by the Republicans or a Libertarian disgusted with the waste of your tax money, then I believe you will enjoy this book while learning a few things. Goldberg effortlessly tears into the Liberals irrational mania of attacking Bush more than our terrorist enemies. He critiques the New York Times for their shameless bias toward Liberals while they run front page news for weeks on an supposed injustice on the way Iraqi prisoners of war are treated, then when a soldier is kidnapped and beheaded it is buried deep in the paper and ran only one time. Who's side are these guys on? Are they insane for comparing Bush to Nazis or do they just not study real life history to understand how the Nazis really were? The author will enlighten you how the Republicans have abandoned conservative principles by pandering to groups with plenty of Pork spending of your tax dollars. The Bush administration has far approved more spending than the Clinton White House did. What are they thinking? This is why the author believes the Democrats won the 2006 six elections and why the Democrats could when the White House in 2008. This book is a call for the Democrats to start thinking again and the Republicans to grow a backbone. Amen Bernard Goldberg, while I am a Libertarian I agreed with this entire book, he also touched on the accountibilty needed in the black community and how the Jews are held to different standards than their Arab neighbors. Buy this book for a good read and to be armed with some good points to make in this war for our national politics.
Snap!.......2007-10-03
Oh, it's "comeuppance time" for those pesky liberals and those wimpy Republicans, and Bernard Goldberg is just the guy to scold both sides of the elitist aisles. The former CBS News correspondent writes what I've been thinking for five or six years--since the Bush administration and its rubber-stamp cronies in Congress started acting like free-spending, pandering liberals--in his hard-hitting yet humorous polemic CRAZIES TO THE LEFT OF ME, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT.
As a conservative libertarian, Goldberg (and millions of the rest of us) is fed up with insipid, visceral liberalism--aided and abetted by the mainstream media. The left is fair game, and Goldberg doesn't disappoint as he crtitiques liberal wool-gathering on several issues, including affirmative action, racial profiling, national security, taxation. . .even the liberal culture of hatred and intolerance.
Yet he's just getting started; Goldberg saves his best blows for the Republicans (not conservatives, mind you) who have "sold out." Abandoning their conservative principles and ideals, the Washington establishment Republicans lost Congress in 2006 by pandering to special interests, through corruption, by trolling for votes with taxpayer dollars, by record spending, and by "wimping out" to the left. If the Republicans do not heed the "wakeup call" of 2006, Goldberg warns, they run the risk of losing their conservative base (hear, hear!).
This is a fun read; Goldberg writes in a witty, conversational style, which makes for a fast page-turner. CRAZIES TO THE LEFT OF ME, WIMPS TO THE RIGHT pulls no punches and takes no prisoners; it's a common sense critique of the nonsense and bitter partisanship polluting our culture--penned by an author unafraid to call 'em as he sees 'em.
--D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning
Hard to Swallow.......2007-09-30
Bernard Goldberg never fails to disappoint at disappointing and this is evidenced by his crafty title in which he says both sides of the coin are on the wrong track, but one will soon note that left are crazy, or hopeless, while the conservatives only have to regain their courage and principle. The implication is the that they are obviously the sane ones.
Otherwise the title will not throw off the discerning reader who soon notices that Goldberg makes non-sequitirs, comparisons of convenience, and generalizations, usually about what liberals are thinking or doing, and they have it all wrong. He narrative is as profound as a sidewalk rain puddle is deep, and his conclusions, while some crazy (sorry) are about as original as a child who wants to dress up for Halloween as a ghost.
Some of these shallow comparisons include all liberals as unable to forgive Mel Gibson for his anti-Semitic tirade but were wailing that a convicted killer was executed. Goldberg goes on to muse if the liberals ever knew the names of the victims, which in his eyes proves what, he doesn't say. The reader is supposed infer that liberals don't care about the murdered, or not as much as the murderer. Sheer nonsense!
The low point for me was his suggestion that abu Ghraib not being like a Soviet Gulag. Point made. Nevertheless, it didn't have to become a gulag to provide al-Qaeda an enormous propaganda victory and perennial recruiting poster that undercut the moral probity and justification for war in the first place. If Goldberg is not pooh-poohing the suffering and indignties that would make our blood boil if had been our troops, he makes a connection of convenience that caring about our treatment of prisoners is more important to liberals than the support of our soldiers. I would hope someone would give him a copy of "Oath Betrayed" by Steve Miles, M.D.
If this is part of the author's attempt at humor, it went over my head. It soon became clear that he might be trying to emulate some of his more controversial and conservative fellow pundits with vapid statements that could inflame because of their insensitivity and supersciliousness.
This continues throughout the book, one after another, and space does not allow to add his thoughts on Hurricane Katrina, racial profiling, and other topics which border on the absurd.
The one genius Goldberg shows is his ability to market this fare which has no academic or qualitative value. It's as if he's selling hamburger and calling it steak.
Do yourself a favor, and drown this one in steak sauce.
Either way, it's hard to swallow.
Fun with Goldberg.......2007-09-21
It is always a pleasure to read anything by Bernie Goldberg, if for no then reason then because of the wit and humor that he brings to the discussions of contemporary issues. This is a very varied account of many of his personal gripes that he has with both left and the right in the US, but at the final analysis it is still the right that comes somewhat ahead, although it would seem it is primarily because they are better at not getting their foot stuck in their mouth as often as the liberals seem to be doing these days. One of the main things that Goldberg has an issue with is the lack of civility that goes on in public discourse, regardless of if it has to do political speech or just general politeness in everyday life. It is to Bernie's credit that he succeeds at dismantling those he disagrees with without having to resort to cheap ad hominem attacks and vicious recriminations. It would be great if some other best-selling authors followed in his footsteps. Otherwise, we may have to wait for another book by Bernard Goldberg.

Customer Reviews:
The other Side of Sidney Sheldon.......2007-08-29
The style of this autobiography is uniquely Sheldon and completely engrossing. As he explained in a 1982 interview : "I try to write my books so the reader can't put them down, I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of a chapter, he or she has to read just one more chapter. It's the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter."
The book starts with his impoverished childhood during the Great Depression and surprisingly ends before his meteoric rise as a successful novelist.
Born Sidney Schechtel in Chicago in 1917 to German & Russian parents, Sheldon's life had more ups and downs than a month of roller coaster rides. A long time sufferer from manic depression or bipolar disorder as it is now called, he often turned away at critical moments from paths that were just opening up to him.
Success took time coming his way and even when it did, it didn't stay long. (Not until his writing career took off, then there was no looking back) In his words - "Success is an elevator that moves up and down". His ups included having three musical hits playing simultaneously on Broadway, the Oscar and the Screen Writers Guild award for Best Musical for "Annie Get your Gun" The downs included long periods of unemployment and blacklisting by the studios.
There are so many anecdotes about so many famous people that are a pleasure to read. Groucho Marx was an extremely close friend and also Godfather of Sheldon's daughter Mary. Having seen the Hollywood industry as a writer, producer and director his insights are precise and delightful.
My only disappointment was is that I wish he had written a part two before his death on January 30th, this year. He does throw a few morsels about his writing life experiences, but they just aren't enough for his adoring fans.
The Best of Sidney Sheldon.......2007-08-20
If you're a fan of Sidney Sheldon's, you'll appreciate this book. In addition to being a prolific writer, you'll find a multi-talented writer of many popular scripts. The books includes photos of Sheldon with many of the Hollywood stars he's worked with. A fantastic journey of his life, including his greatest challenge of dealing with bi-polar.
The Other Side of Me by Sidney Sheldon.......2007-05-12
This book is about Sidney Sheldon's life and is very good but is not a page turner like all of his other books of fictional mysteries.
Extremely Disappointing.......2007-05-05
I'm sort of glad Sidney Sheldon is no longer here to read what I have to say about his autobiography.
I was a huge fan of his novels discovering him when I saw the movie The Other Side Of Midnight. This was to be Fox Studio's BIG blockbuster of the summer of '77, but another little movie, Star Wars, upset that apple cart just a little. I loved that cheesy soap opera so much I went out and immediately snatched up every book he had written.
I never cared for Sheldon's TV shows however. They were extremely wimpy, soft and boring such as Patty Duke's show and I Dream Of Jeannie. But he was a master novel writer...at least I THINK it was him. After Jorga, his wife, died, Sheldon's product took a huge nosedive. I found I could not finish his later books. Since she helped him plot the novels, I truely believe it was she who was the brains behind the genius.
The Other Side Of Me is very slow and the problem I had with it was the ease in which he made it in Hollywood. When one door closed, five others opened right up. He apparently remembered EVERY blessed conversation he ever had with every person he ever met. Boring conversations in fact. Small talk!!! Aaaarrrrgghhhh!!! His life became so boring I skimmed at least 75% of the book. In fact it did not get up to steam until around page 252. Then when he got to the part of his life where he got into novel writing, it suddenly ends. I wanted so much to see who or what gave him the ideas for Noel Page in Other Side of Midnight and the ultimately geniusly plotted Master Of The Game. But no,that's it, book's over, go home now.
If you must read this, buy one that's running for $1.00 or so. You won't feel so cheated in the morning.
FANTASTIC!.......2007-03-02
This the best memoir that I have ever read! I had never read a Sydney Sheldon book before, but when he died a few weeks ago, I was reading his obituary and I was shocked at his incredible life! He wrote screenplays for major movies, he wrote broadway plays, he created television shows and he wrote all of those best-selling books! I never knew that the same Sydney Sheldon that created "I Dream of Jeannie" was also the famous author. When I read that he had recently written his memoir, I rushed out to buy it. It is so well written and interesting. I could not put it down. The chapters are short and it reads like a mystery. I couldn't wait to read what happens next. His story is the American dream. He never, ever gives up, even though he suffered from manic depression. He has many setbacks but always bounced back. His story is so inspiring. I highly, highly recommend this fantastic and inspiring book! I just wish it was even longer, because I loved reading it!

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful little book.......2004-09-07
My title is chosen carefully - this is both a wonderful book and a "little" book. Most of those reviewing it who give it less than five stars are simply expecting too much of it, and part of the charm of the book is its simplicity and limited goals.
It is a book with limited goals and aims which collects the available bits of a fascinating story. "Him on One Side and Me on the Other" does not seek to draw any grand conclusions or deeper analysis from these bits, though it does try to fill out the bits and give us the parts of the story that can be filled in from other documents.
The two Campbell brothers represent a bit of America that transcends the Civil War - these are immigrant stories and stories about the growth of the country. But, most of all, they are simply stories. They leave us wanting to know much more about the brothers and their families, where they came from, and what they were doing. Beyond reading the footnotes, it really is helpful to read this together with more analytical histories of the time, both histories of the 79th (a fascinating regiment and story), of 19th Century America (especially its immigrants and industrialization) and, perhaps, though oddly less importantly, of the Civil War.
As an example of one fascinating place where this story and the broader historical moment come together, this book has some great detail on the transition of the military to a professional force. The 79th was a volunteer regiment, one where the men initially picked their own leaders, which made the regiment uniquely political. It also meant that the 79th really did have something of a mind of its own, interpreting orders rather than simply implementing them. In the letters from Alexander, you see some of the strains of this system on a rank and file infantry-man, one who is not apparently moving up through the political or military ranks, and this is one of those places where the stories interact very nicely with the history. There are, however, many others, and the book is highly recommended.
Decent collection of letters with unusual angle.......2000-08-31
"Him on the One Side and Me on the Other" tells one of those stories that sounds like fiction. The Campbell brothers emigrate from Scotland to America. Alexander settled in New York City while James moved to Charleston. When the war broke out, Alexander enlisted in the 79th New York "Highlanders" and James in the 1st South Carolina "Charleston" battalion. Their war service was vastly different: Alexander fought in Virginia, South Carolina and Kentucky, and resigned in 1863 after being wounded in battle. James helped guard the South Carolina coast, was captured in the battle of Battery Wagner in July 1863 and spent the rest of the war in three Northern prisons.
Although both brothers wrote the letters that are collected in this book, they are vastly dissimilar. The majority of the book consists of Alexander's letters to his wife, while most of James's letters were from prison, by nature short and censored. But one from James shortly after the brothers fought in the battle of Successionville in 1862 laid the position down succinctly: "I hope that You and I will never again meet face to face Bitter enemies on the Battle field. But if such should be the case You have but to discharge your deauty to Your caus for I can assure you I will strive to discharge my deauty to my country & My cause." But despite their beliefs in their respective causes, Alexander and James were brothers, and their feelings for each other, as reflected in the letters and Alexander's assistance to James while he was in prison, never changed. They were brothers first.
Also included in "Him on the One Side" is an extensive collection of footnotes, explanatory material and maps.
History.......1999-12-22
Letter collections often can be a catch-as-catch-can propostion. As you can see from the previous reviews, this particular collection has raised some eyebrows. I've already posted my feelings on this book and won't bore you with a restaging. But I would encourage everyone who reads these reviews to approach this book with an open mind. It seems some of the reviewers have different agendas at work for whatever reasons; the bile is a bit off-putting. Obviously, opinions can differ, but there really is no reason to sling insults.
A Good Book for Scholars of the Individual Soldier.......1999-12-20
If you are looking for epic narrative, or soaring flights of Victorian prose, this collection of Civil War letters will not be of interest to you. But if a reader wants to hear a voice from the trenches, to see behind the grand sweep of war to the every day concerns of common soldiers, this book is a treasure. In the blunt, unadorned language of the ordinary man, these letters address the timeless issues of worry about family at home, boredom, frustration, army politics, and longing for hometown news. Mr. Johnston does an excellent job of footnoting events mentioned in the letters, and laying out in consice terms the greater happenings of the army, beyond the letters' scope. He also accomplishes the amazing task of identifying virtually every person named in those letters.
At times I did find the on-page footnoting distracting to the main text. However, upon reflection, I will conceed that to put the footnotes in some distant lump at chapter or book's end would not be as effective. I would have perhaps liked to see just a few more photographs, such as of one or two of the original letters. Yet I realize the scarcity of such photos as Mr. Johnston so fortunately located, and the reader is gratified to have at least the faces of these soldiers to look at.
One should keep in mind the Campbell brothers' Scottish origins, while reading these letters, and look beyond the typical Scots reticence for flowery emotion. Between the lines lies the real story, worry for a wife and young family at home, with little money and no husband/father. Understated poignancy lies in the expressions of concern for the brother under that opposing flag, the search of a shared battlefield, and questioning of prisoners, each brother after the other's welfare. And most notable is the reader's realization that, although they effectively sought to kill each other in the name of duty to country, the resumption of their fraternal relationship is as uneventful as though they had but played on opposing baseball teams.
Family is the strongest thread throughout all these letters, husband, wife, children, brothers and brothers-in-law, whose ties of love are tested but not broken by the conflict that tore a nation apart. Therein lies the lesson of that war; that the nation's divisions would be healed not by politics, but by and in the hearts of individuals.
As a reader of a good many Civil War books, I will say this. For the student of the inside of this war, particularly the words of the men who fought it, this book will find an honorable place on your book shelf.
Real History.......1999-12-20
It's refreshing to learn what it was really like to live through the Civil War without the opinions and embellishments of authors clouding the facts.

Don't be fooled. She's a paid employee. We trusted that she was as truthful as the stories she told. Shame on you Mary. Hard to believe that the book (which we bought after meeting her) is any more truthful.
Amazing Author, Amazing Book.......2003-03-22
I had the opportunity to spend the day with Mary while visiting Anaheim and realized that she is a very amazing person with so much to share. I immediately went out, purchased her book, and read it cover to cover. Her book was very well written and very interesting. I couldn't put it down. I read it cover to cover. I know she has so much more to tell, I hope she has plans for writing another.

Book Description
Come Travel With Me To The Other Side Of Sunset is a collection of impressions the author has encountered over a period of years traveling to destinations around the world. You'll be able to join in the fun of travel with this book of adventures. There is something for every traveler in this book. Chapters about car travel, rain forest hiking, fishing, mountain hiking, horseback riding, and special chapters about events that occurred along the way. Just a reading of the chapter titles will entice you to make a reservation or dream of a trip to come someday.
The style of the book is descriptive and entertaining. Not only do the words bring the destinations to life, but the book has over 100 photographs show you how it looks when you get there. You'll be told what happened and you will also be included in a writing style that is more like a conversation than a 40-chapter reading. You will be able to meet and know about the people that have made impressions on the writer.
These are special people who make traveling fun and hassle-free. If your travel or vacation dreams are docile in nature or you want to go for it all, this book shows both sides of the picture as you travel to the other side of sunset.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE your book!.......2000-03-09
David,
Love your book! Congratulations! The only fault is it's so readable it's hard to put down.
Thanks for all the pictures and note about your family - they look just what I would expect.
Since traveling is what I did a great deal of, I felt right at home with your book. Travel does change one's perspective. I have hundreds and hundreds of slides of various coountries - Italy, China, Egypt, S.America, etc. - once in a while I take them out to relive my memories...
Thanks. - Jeanne Goodman
A Must Have for even those who aren't traveling.......1999-09-01
This book is folksy and riveting, and the style is of sitting around the living room and listening to the stories told. They're good stories. The author's style of writing invites you in and takes you along on a wonderful ride across the country. If you've ever wanted to see it all, this is the way to do it.
This is an easy to read and well-written travel book........1999-08-30
Come Travel With Me To The Other Side Of Sunset is a collection of stories of the travels that Mr. Ladewig has made to many parts of the world. It is easy to read and made me feel that I was traveling with him. In-depth interest is added by the author's active participation and enjoyment in good food, hiking, horseback riding, sailing, scenery, and photography. The book contains many excellent photographs. It also provides many helpful tips and suggestions on how to plan the various aspects of a trip. While this book covers travels to many parts of the world, favorite locations appear to be the out-of-the-way Caribbean Islands and the Canadian Rockies. This book entices me to travel to some places where I have never been, to go back to some where I have been and to dream about the rest. A very enjoyable well written and entertaining book
