In the opening of Lance Armstrong's memoir, Every Second Counts (co-authored by Sally Jenkins), he reflects: "Generally, one of the hardest things in the world to do is something twice." While he is talking here about his preparation for what would prove to be his second consecutive Tour de France victory in 2000, the sentiment could equally be applied to the book itself. And just as Armstrong managed to repeat his incredible 1999 tour victory, Every Second Counts repeats--and, in some ways exceeds—the success of his bestselling first memoir, It's Not About the Bike.

Every Second Counts confronts the challenge of moving beyond his cancer experience, his first Tour victory, and his celebrity status. Few of Armstrong's readers will ever compete in the Tour de France (though cyclists will relish Armstrong's detailed recounting of his 2000-2003 tour victories), but all will relate to his discussions of loss and disappointment in his personal and professional life since 1999. They will relate to his battles with petty bureaucracies, like the French court system during the doping scandal that almost halted his career. And they will especially relate to constant struggles with work/life balance.

In the face of September 11--which arrives halfway through the narrative (just before the fifth anniversary of his diagnosis)--Armstrong draws from his experiences to show that suffering, fear, and death are the essential human condition. In so openly using his own life to illustrate how to face this reality, he proves that he truly is a hero--and not just because of the bike. In Every Second Counts he is to be admired as a human being, a man who sees every day as a challenge to live richly and well, no matter what hardships may come. --Patrick O'Kelley

Book Description

The four-time Tour de France winner and number 1 New York Times bestselling author returns with an inspirational account of his recent personal and professional victories—and some failures—and an intimate glimpse into how almost dying taught him to really live.

Since the release of his megabestseller, It’s Not About the Bike, Lance Armstrong has enjoyed a new series of thrilling rides, from the birth of his twin daughters, to an astounding succession of Tour de France triumphs, to being chosen as Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 2002. Continuing the inspiring story begun in his first book, Every Second Counts captures the mind-set of a man who has beaten incredible odds and considers each day an opportunity for excellence.

Armstrong’s previous book recounted his journey from a grim diagnosis of testicular cancer, which had spread to his lungs and brain, to a stunning recovery that culminated in his winning the 1999 Tour de France—the ultimate evidence that he had also won a daunting battle with death.

His new book addresses the equally daunting challenge of living in the aftermath of this experience and making the most of every breath of life. Armstrong candidly discusses his prickly relationship with the French and the ultimately disproved accusations of doping within his Tour de France team, and he writes about his recent achievements, including celebrating five years of cancer survival and how he restored a magnificent chapel in his beloved Spain.

A fresh perspective on the spirit of survivors everywhere, Every Second Counts will invigorate and enthrall Armstrong’s millions of admirers.

3 out of 5 stars Worth It For "The Look" Alone.......2007-08-19

Lance's first book, It's Not About the Bike, is a great book weaving together the author's fight to overcome cancer and his remarkable first win of the Tour de France in 1999.

Every Second Counts continues the story, including action up to and including the 2003 Tour. But it falls far short of the standard set in the original work.

Much of the material dealing with Lance's values as a family man and a cancer survivor is repetitive; having established himself as multi dimensional in Not About the Bike, Armstrong should have gone deeper into the racing action this time around.

Nevertheless I didn't regret reading this. Lance's achievements are astonishing and every bit of insight adds something. The description of the epic moment in the 2001 Tour when, after bluffing, Armstrong stared down Jan Ulrich and blasted past him up the Alpe d'Huez is worth it in and of itself.

5 out of 5 stars Insight to a Winner.......2007-07-23

Lance Armstrong is a unique athlete unparalleled in the world of cycling. This book gives you a look inside his head to find a very focused driven person with an indominatable spirit. You will find it enlightening and sometimes not very pretty, but no one can argue with his willingness to train ruthlessly to win. How many of us would be willing to climb a steep mountain on a bike and then come down and do it again to get it right. He shows us what it takes to win the greatest bike race in the world - multiple times. Lance is a champion among champions and we can all learn something from his drive and will to win!

Step One: Find a bathroom (any facility with a toilet will do).

Step Two: Place the toilet seat in the proper position and squat. (If you wish to be hygienic place toilet paper upon the seat).

Step Three: Defecate.

Step Four: Call your local publisher.

Step Five: Rub America's face in what you have thus created.

Bonus Step If you wish to be extra asinine and full of yourself: Make Special Poo colored wristbands so that every time someone donates a dollar for research your ego is stroked a little more.

5 out of 5 stars Part 2.......2007-05-23

This picks up where "It's Not About the Bike" left off. This is a more mundane read than About the Bike, but it was still a very good read. Lance lets you into his head a bit more to see what makes him tick and what his beliefs are. Well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-03-12

I liked this book even more than "It's Not About the Bike", and I loved that book. I enjoyed learning about the incredible team work involved in something as crueling as the Tour de France. As a woman, I wasn't raised participating in team sports and I never thought of a bike race as anything but an individual performance. I really felt as if I was riding along with the guys up those massive peaks...Good writing in my opinion...Insightful

very good book with practical advice that any salesperson can apply on a day to day basis.I really appreciated that this book is so down to earth and crystal clear.

5 out of 5 stars Kahle's Time Management Book.......2007-01-10

This book was recommended to us by a couple of professors at University of Toledo for its section on territory management. I had initially passed the book by, because the title didn't grab me. The book is very good, even for experienced sales reps. I'd recommend it to any sales rep, novice or experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected - Fully recommend.......2006-04-19

I was a little hesitant about purchasing this book. I feared it would be one more fluffy time management book. But Mr Kahle has clearly walked the salesmans walk which lends great crediblity. I found his point of view and suggestions to be refreshingly candid and hands-on. One of my favorite passages in the book reads:
"You can choose not to do this. You can be like most of the mediocre salespeople in the world. You can allow yourself to become reactive... or you can choose to work far more effetively by implementing the disciplines of thinking about it before you do it, and thinking about it in the right way. It's a free country. It's your choice."

I am very glad I bought the book and will use it as a reference for motivating my team on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful tool for a Sales Manager.......2004-08-01

I bought the book to gain knowledge to help my sales team be more effective. I was very pleased with the book overall and learned some good tips to help educate my reps. I would recommend this book to any Sale Manager or Salesperson who wants to be more productive with the limited hours we have in each day.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-06-11

Dave Kahle adapts many now common time management processes for the specific use of salespeople in the field. His underlying assumption is that it is much more difficult for outside salespeople to apply the usual techniques, since their lives are so filled with uncertainty. Plus salespeople tend to be action-oriented, so they don't commonly want to spend time planning or setting up systems. But, Kahle argues, such organization is critical to success in sales. While Kahle claims that most time management principles and tactics "totally miss the unique challenges of the field salesperson," the material he covers in the book sounds very familiar. It echoes many other books about goal setting, problem solving, decision making and effective selling. We find that while this may be a helpful review of fairly common material in the guise of time management, the information is hardly unique - although its focus on salespeople's needs may give it additional value for them.

The Washington Post praised this as a "how-to classic" and I would agree with them. It's well-organized and filled with top-quality professional advice. It's also very 'readable' - which sets it apart from so many public speaking texts.

I found this book saved me a lot of time and worry, both in preparing formal speeches and informal presentations. Most important, it will make you a much better, and more confident, speaker.

Book Description

In the tradition of The Right Stuff comes the true story of four men locked in a race to transplant the first human heart--a riveting tale of surgical daring, unyielding ambition, and scientific adventure.

Many people remember the beaming face of Christiaan Barnard, the South African surgeon, after he performed the first human heart transplant, and captured the world's imagination. It was a stunning achievement, but he was not alone. In truth it was a four-way race, a fierce struggle fraught with passionate rivalry. The other three surgeons-Adrian Kantrowitz, Norman Shumway, and Richard Lower-were giants in the field, and by early December 1967 they and Barnard were each poised to snatch the victor's laurels. Each had spent years perfecting techniques that would lead to a successful heart transplant; each had monitored his chosen patient's condition, watching the clock, hoping a donor would be found in time.

Some of these men were friends; others were enemies. Only one of them would be the first.

From a dank, underequipped hospital in Cape Town to a cramped lab in San Francisco, the surgeons worked their own individual miracles to prolong their patients' lives, testing the limits of science, and nature itself. Like the classics of medical adventure-from James Watson's The Double Helix to John Barry's The Great Influenza-Every Second Counts is an unforgettable story of not only competition and fame, but of life and death.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every Second Counts.......2007-10-10

An absolutely spell binding account of the early work in the field of heart transplant. Extremely well written and very factual. A great read, indeed, it is almost impossible to put the book down once you begin.

5 out of 5 stars An In-Depth Autobiography.......2007-04-12

This autobiography of Lance Armstrong will show you how teamwork plays an important role in the Tour de France. You'll also see how Armstrong coped after his first marriage ended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2007-01-12

The book deals with complicated medical matters, but is written like a novel and is riveting, and hard to put down. It covers lots of medical and human history and is required reading for those too young to understand and appreciate heart and vascular surgery. Bypass and transplant surgery has changed the world and this book tells who made it possible.

Joseph R. Newell, Jr

5 out of 5 stars "Every Second Counts".......2007-01-09

This well written book provides insight into the personalities, goals and methods of the surgeons who worked tirelessly to develop the procedure of heart transplant. In many ways it reads like a novel with the moral that the best doesn't always win the race. Society and mankind has benefited greatly from the efforts of most of these people. The winner of the race got the spoils but paid a heavy price. It is well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful; couldn't put it down.......2006-09-26

This book does a wonderful job of bringing the story of the world's first HUMAN heart-transplant to life--and for those of us who might be in the medical field--some insight, down the road, of what must have driven other heart surgeons. Remember, the University of Mississippi's James Hardy? Did you know that he used a Baboon's heart--and implanted it into a human? Later, in the 1980's, did you know Dr. Bailey (Loma Linda) used a baby baboon's heart and put it into "Baby Fae"? Remember this? Heart surgeons have been plagued by the Prima Donna syndrome for years--and justifiably; however, this book UNDOES history's fame on Christan Barnard and makes him out to be a fame-driven, and ultimately, sorrowful individual stripped of his fellowship in the American College of Surgeons--while making the American surgeons (Drs. Shumway, Lower, Stinson, Kantrowitz) the real heroes of the heart transplant. I couldn't put this book down. . .and you won't be able to either. Christian Barnard's greatest achievment to science was NOT the heart transplant: it was his discovery of the cause of intestinal atresia, and the help his work in transplantation led the American's to re-define the definition of death from "heart" death to "brain-dead." The hero of the heart transplant is Richard Lower and Norman Shumway. Simply outstanding reading.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed - not the bob bly quality of old.......2001-08-01

bob bly has written a lot of great books. this is not one of them. i have bought and read most of his books. this one is not up to bob's usual quality.

i have learned a lot of useful things from his other books, but not this one. the little content that had potential did not tell me how to actually use his advice. much of it was unusable by normal people and almost seemed like padding to a magazine article to stretch it to a book.

this book stated the obvious things to do but did not tell how to do them. any time management 101 book would tell more than this book.

some of his advice is similar to the simple-minded simplicity books that would have you using the same towel all week to save laundry. obviously bobs stuff works for bob but we are not bob -- we are us and he should tell us stuff that works for us.

bob works hard and is very successful. but i do NOT want to work hard -- i want to work smart. i just want to know how to get the most out of the time i do work because i plan to have some BALANCE to my life and some fun too not just use every minute to make money.

if bob had just explained all of his lists and how he uses them then the book might have been worthwhile. as it is, it seemed like he ground out another book to make money. the quality of the content was just not up to his earlier books.

if you want to use your time more efficiently then read get control of your time and your life by alan lakein.

bob has some 5star books this one is barely one star.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-02-17

Robert W. Bly's helpful, amusing and slim volume is jam-packed with wisdom and plenty of tips to help you organize, manage your time better, cure procrastination and increase your productivity. While some of his advice is plain old common-sense information that you've probably already heard, it may well bear repeating. Just one look around your office may show you how many people have heard some of this counsel before but are still hopelessly disorganized time wasters. Bly includes pertinent data from surveys of leaders and working stiffs who feel overwhelmed by information, too many demands on their time and the constant struggle to fit 25 hours of work and real life into a 24-hour day. He also sprinkles witty and instructive quotes throughout the book, which we at getAbstract.com recommend to anyone who'd like to have a little extra time left over (and that's everyone).

    Product Description

Every Second Counts is a collection of thirty-two human interest articles by Danish-born journalist Richard Oestermann. Through the poignant narratives offered in this collection, he opens a doorway into the lives of ordinary people, including Jews, Christians, and Arabs. The book is a look at the lesser-known aspects of Israeli life. It is characterized by an expression of tolerance and understanding between different groups of Israeli society, as seen through the eyes and experiences of the author who began his career in Israel as a foreign correspondent covering the Adolf Eichmann war crimes trial.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Multi-angle View of Israeli Society and Life.......2007-02-21

In this book, journalist Richard Oesterman presents a window into viewing Israeli society and life from a multi-angle lens perspective ... These stories do not make newspaper headlines, they are not sent on the AP wire, nor are they shown on C.N.N. news. The different angles from which to understand Israeli life include: arts and culture, the Muslim experience, historical viewpoints, kibbutz lifestyle, important political figures, integration of immigrants, religious transformation, guest workers, archeological and Biblical digs, health perspectives, and survival stories.

The author presents the reader either new stories or those which have previously been published - either way - reading them is an eye-opening experience. The reader begins to appreciate the complexity of living within Israel, the only democratic country in the Middle East which has strong ties to Europe and the USA. It is a country and society which was built by both realistic and idealistic people. These strong willed people of faith built the country from the ground up, facing the most formidable challenges of both nature and politics and even today, and everyday, they continually face potential danger right within their own borders.

The reader develops a strong appreciation and admiraton for the people of Israel and what it takes to live there. The reader sees the deep spiritual basis of what it means to live in this land where so much history and Biblical archeology surrounds them around every corner. The reader appreciates how so many different people from so many different countries use their common heritage on which to build a working democratic society where Middle East politics and hostile surrounding neighbors threaten their lives daily. 5 out of 5 stars enblightening stories.......2006-12-17

In this imaginative and insightful book the author seeks to show that there is "nuanced picture of Israel" that doesn't just include the `occupation' and suicide bombings. This is a mighty task and this short read goes a long way towards achieving the goal. Replete with pictures and insightful articles, each of which stand alone, the reader is walked through a typical journey of Israeli life. Various chapters examine the Israeli leadership, the Ethiopian immigrants, `honor' killings among Palestinians, Ariel Sharon, the history of the Hebrew language and bird watching, among other topics. The diversity is what makes this book so wonderful. There are numerous insights, some of which are not really about Israel but about Jews or Arab culture, for instance that out of 750 Nobel prizes, 139 went to Jews. There is a separate sections that details the Jewish quarter of Venice and Jews in Iran. In one of the last chapters the exploits of Count Folke Bernadotte are investigated through a recently published dissertation on the man. Bernadotte was responsible for lat minute negotiations in 1948 between Israel and the Arab states and he was assassinated by the Stern group. Many have subsequently portrayed him as a hero fighting for peace, however the truth is that he was a member of the collaborationist Swedish government that permitted Nazi troops passage through their country during the Second World War. In addition he only pretended to be interested in Liberating Jews but he made sure that the Swedish government never informed the allies of their knowledge about the Holocuast. New information has come to light on his role in these affairs and the information is quite enlightening. It is too bad the author did not include more modern information about anti-Semitism among Swedish officials today, for instance attempts to ban kosher food and make circumcision illegal.
The strength of this collection is in its diversity and the true extent of the topics covered. The interviews are unquestionably a good snapshot of Israeli society in all its oddities and richness. A great introduction to Israel and also a valuable resource as a primer for a variety of obscure topics.
