Books by politicians are not often worth reading, but John McCain's Faith of My Fathers is an astonishing exception to the rule. The Republican senator from Arizona has a remarkable story to tell--better than just about any of his peers--and he tells it well, with crisp prose and an unexpected sense for narrative pacing. The first half of the book concerns his naval forbears: his grandfather commanded an aircraft carrier in the Second World War, while his father presided over all naval forces in the Pacific during the Vietnam War. They were the first father-son admirals in American history. Young John McCain knew he had enormous shoes to fill and rebelled against many of the expectations set for him. At the Naval Academy, he was nearly expelled, graduating fifth from the bottom of his class. He never became an admiral, but achieved fame another way: as a naval aviator in 1967, he was shot down over North Vietnam and spent several years in POW camps, where he was beaten, tortured, and nearly allowed to die. McCain describes the awful details of his imprisonment and tells how he stayed mentally strong during seemingly endless months of solitary confinement and how he communicated in code with fellow captives. Faith of My Fathers concludes with McCain's release and contains no information about his subsequent political career. It is, nonetheless, a complete and compelling memoir of individual heroism--one that will interest both political and military history buffs. --John J. Miller

Book Description

John McCain is one of the most admired leaders in the United States government, but his deeply felt memoir of family and war is not a political one and ends before his election to Congress. With candor and ennobling power, McCain tells a story that, in the words of Newsweek, "makes the other presidential candidates look like pygmies."

John McCain learned about life and honor from his grandfather and father, both four-star admirals in the U.S. Navy. This is a memoir about their lives, their heroism, and the ways that sons are shaped and enriched by their fathers.

John McCain's grandfather was a gaunt, hawk-faced man known as Slew by his fellow officers and, affectionately, as Popeye by the sailors who served under him. McCain Sr. played the horses, drank bourbon and water, and rolled his own cigarettes with one hand. More significant, he was one of the navy's greatest commanders, and led the strongest aircraft carrier force of the Third Fleet in key battles during World War II.

John McCain's father followed a similar path, equally distinguished by heroic service in the navy, as a submarine commander during World War II. McCain Jr. was a slightly built man, but like his father, he earned the respect and affection of his men. He, too, rose to the rank of four-star admiral, making the McCains the first family in American history to achieve that distinction. McCain Jr.'s final assignment was as commander of all U.S. forces in the Pacific during the Vietnam War.

It was in the Vietnam War that John McCain III faced the most difficult challenge of his life. A naval aviator, he was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and seriously injured. When Vietnamese military officers realized he was the son of a top commander, they offered McCain early release in an effort to embarrass the United States. Acting from a sense of honor taught him by his father and the U.S. Naval Academy, McCain refused the offer. He was tortured, held in solitary confinement, and imprisoned for five and a half years.

Faith of My Fathers is about what McCain learned from his grandfather and father, and how their example enabled him to survive those hard years. It is a story of three imperfect men who faced adversity and emerged with their honor intact. Ultimately, Faith of My Fathers shows us, with great feeling and appreciation, what fathers give to their sons, and what endures.

Download Description

This deeply felt memoir by one of this country's most admired leaders tells the story of three generations of an American military family. The grandson and son of two of the U.S. Navy's most revered commanders, Senator John McCain shows how this legacy of military service and courage helped prepare him for the biggest challenge of his life when, as a naval aviator, he was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and seriously injured. When his captors realized McCain's identity, they offered him early release. In what has now become a legendary act of heroism, McCain refused the offer and was subsequently tortured, held in solitary confinement, and imprisoned for more than five years.

Faith of My Fathers is about what McCain learned from his father and grandfather, and how their example enabled him to survive. Told with humility, grace, and humor, it is a story of three imperfect men who faced adversity and emerged with their honor intact. It is a story to inspire and instruct, one that shows what fathers give to their sons, and what, ultimately, endures.

4 out of 5 stars Just Great.......2007-08-05

What an excellently written memoir by an American Hero. Mr. Mccain has a uniquely gritty humor which I personally enjoy, and the tales of his family's struggles, and more importantly his own- should be a required read for anyone entering military service.

5 out of 5 stars John McCain, The Real Life Jack Bauer.......2007-06-09

John McCain encompasses every thing that makes a person a hero. His service both in Vietnam and in public life is extraordinary, uncompromising and principled. He would have made an excellent president in 2000. But sadly, by 2008, at the age of 72, I fear that he will simply be too old, too battleworn both physically and mentally to be an effective president.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing tale!.......2007-03-29

Heard FAITH OF MY FATHERS by John McCain with Mark Salter
that details the Arizona senator's life before his political career.

It is an engrossing tale about how he followed in the footsteps of
both his grandfather and father, the first father and son to be
promoted the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy . . . but McCain
wasn't as successful; he graduated fifth from the bottom of
his class at the Naval Academy and was nearly expelled.

However, he achieved fame in another way as naval aviator when
he was shot down in 1967 and became a POW in North Viet
Nam . . . for several years, he endured both physical and
mental abuse--yet managed to survive while many others did not.

FAITH OF MY FATHERS made me appreciate the sacrifices
made by McCain and all the other soldiers who have served
and/or continue to serve our great county . . . it also reminded
me about the fact that when America is in a country where others
don't want us to be, then anything can and does go with respect
to how people get treated when captured.

I was glad that McCain chose to narrate this book himself . . . it
made my listening even more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story of an Amazing Family.......2006-11-20

As reviewed [...]

After seeing Senator John McCain speak a few times over the years, I grew curious to learn more about him. He always comes across a very intelligent and insightful person. I knew he served in Vietnam and was held as a POW for a few years, but I had no idea what he and his fellow POW's endured while in captivity.

McCain's Faith of My Fathers was published in 1999 but is as inspiring a read today as it will be 50 years from now. McCain comes from a long line of American military heroes. His grandfather and father were both four-star admirals in the Navy. Although McCain comes across as a very reserved and quiet man, he apparently knew how to have a good time in high school and through the Naval Academy; McCain isn't at all shy about sharing some of the more colorful details of those formative years.

This isn't just a book about McCain's years as a POW, although that is the focus for the second half of the book. That part of the story is remarkable enough, but the coverage of both of the elder McCain's and their military highlights make for a truly special read.

4 out of 5 stars McCain for Prez........2006-01-15

John McCain's book is verywell written. I found the advanced vocabulary outstanding. The way the book is put together is very hitorically orientated. He starts with his Grandpa and the impacts he made on John's life, then about his own father and the sacrafices that helped shape his faith. How he did in the navy and being shot down. Finally he tells you about His struggles in 'nam and how his hardships there helped make him a better man. A really good biography and tribute, John McCain for President. GOD bless POW*MIA not forgotten

5 out of 5 stars Faith and faith filled!.......2007-07-18

I've been nothing less then impressed with this series since book #1. And after book #4, "Faith of My Fathers," I'm still highly impressed. Taking the story of Manasseh, Lynn Austin seemingly took it, and split it into two parts. And she was quite clever with the delivery. Some might assume that this came to an abrupt ending, leaving the reader clueless. If you know your Bible, there's nothing clueless about it. This is what I'd call the II Kings version of the story. Yet in The Bible, Manasseh's story continues in II Chronicles. And it worked that way with a lot of the kings. In a lot of cases, most of the kings we read about in The Bible concerning The Northern and Southern Kingdoms were split into two different sections, II Kings, and II Chronicles. From Jehoshaphat, to Joash, to Amaziah, to Jotham, to Hezekiah, to Manasseh! ALL THESE KINGS and more were split up into the two sections. Ok, there's the Bible history lesson! What about this story? Read on!

Ahaz, Manasseh's great-grandfather, was one of the most worthless kings in all of the history. And Manasseh wasn't too far behind him. He was the son of one of the greatest kings to ever reign, Hezekiah. If you don't know the whole story and read this, you'll wonder if anything good ever came out of Manasseh. Lynn Austin, being the author, and better yet, the voice of reason, gives Manasseh a reason to be bitter, and to do what he did. But Austin gives Manasseh a childhood friend in Joshua, who's as clumsy as an Ox! His nickname is Ox. But something happens. And from nicknames to nonsense, there is a reason that these two former best friends are now bitter enemies. King Manasseh is nothing but a master of disaster, and he raises hell throughout the land! He has people executed, and he destroys what he father put together. Joshua wants nothing more then to get even.

If you're wondering if some of the things in this are extreme, they are indeed. What's worse, they really happened. But the good news is that certain people didn't forget the faith their fathers held so dear. I think that's where the title comes from. Because when times get so tough, the question is simple. Are we going to run to God, or run away from God? I'd personally suggest not running away from the great Yahweh! But I think when things get tough, you want to be a rebel just as much as Manasseh. But what do you do? Where do you turn? And for the record, by the time THIS story comes to a close, he still has a chip on his shoulder.

But there is one final installment, and it happens to be "Among The Gods." I think it should be pretty good. That's probably going to be Lynn Austin's II Chronicles part of this story. I already know the end, but I can't wait to read her novelization of it! She's a great storyteller. So far, I have yet to be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars historically awesome series.......2006-08-25

ms austin is the first female author i,ve ever read, but after reading this series on the kings of judah it's completely opened my mind to all writers;the only regret is she didn't continue on with more books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars amazing 4th book!!!.......2006-07-01

Faith of my Fathers is the 4th book in Lynn Austin's Chronicles of the Kings series. After King Hezekiah's death, his son Mannasseh becomes king at age 12. Fear grips Mannasseh's heart as he begins to question God as to why his father died when he faithfully served God. Years later, as he goes to visit his mother's grave in the cemetry he comes upon a man who calls himself a "priest" and begins to accuse everything Mannasseh has grown up with and had been taught. The accussations make Mannessah call upon the prophet Isaiah and his palace adminstrator Eliakim--Mannessah's boyhood friend Joshua's father. During their conforntation King Mannessah accuses Eliakim and Isaiah of conspiring aganist him, using Isaiah's own prophecies aganist him. Eventually Eliakim and Isaiah are executed leaving Eliakim's family in great danger. Joshua and Mannasseh, once best friends have become bitter rivals. Joshua must now find a way to flee Mannasseh's terror while keeping his family safe.

I found this book to be the best out of the first four. And since they keep getting better and better I am guessing the fifth and last book to be more amazing! Lynn Austin does a wonderful job depciting the terror of Mannaseh's reign. He is simply insecure and believes everyone is plotting aganist him. Instead of turning to Yahweh he starts turning to the stars, mediums, etc. for answers. He even begins promoting orgies for worship and sets up Asherah poles and places for women to "offer" themselves to the idol goddess. I have never shed a tear in the first 3 books of this series but the beginning of the book when Eliakim and Isaiah were being falsely accussed and then executed drew a tear from me. It's amazing to see how even when confined to the darkness of a prison and facing death the next morning, these two men trusted God to the very end. I also found it exciting to read about Joshua's plans and such for smuggling himself and his family out of the country. Especially near the end he decides to smuggle the ark of the covenant and Mannasseh's brother--Prince Amariah to Eqypt.

With a host of new characters and some old ones as well this is definatly worth the read. I'm looking forward to reading "Among the Gods" and hope Lynn Austin decides to write more biblical fiction in the future. :-)

INSIDE FRONT FLAP

Relevant — Practical — Compelling

What happens to your faith at work? Do you struggle to live for Jesus while earning a paycheck?

The truth is, when you go to work, you don’t have to check your faith at the door. Successful businessman Regi Campbell shows how your witness and your example can make a huge difference in your workplace and impact lives for eternity.

God is calling you to more than what’s in your job description. Your peers need it. Your Father requires it. It’s His business and only you can accomplish it.

— Doable —

Story Behind the Book

“I’m a business guy who committed his life to Jesus Christ in my early thirties. As a brand-new, fired-up believer, I wanted to make a difference for God, but business was all I really knew. I did what most new Christians do—plugged into a church, joined a Bible study, and started family devotions. But the office was still an enigma: a place where I felt no purpose, a place where I was just serving my time. I felt thwarted and stalled from doing anything for God there. I’m thankful the Lord showed me that the marketplace is where I am supposed to be. Even more, He has shown me some useful ways to think about the people I work with...and to help them move toward Jesus Christ. I wrote this book to share the road map that has made workplace evangelism and discipleship doable for me.”

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get ready to be convicted.......2006-11-10

This is the best guide I have ever read to helping you understand personal evangelism and to putting it to work.

5 out of 5 stars More than a typical Christian Book.......2005-12-16

About My Father's Business is more than a Typical Christian book. It is a discussion of the calling and the lifestyle of "making disciples". As a result it makes the reader deal with issues of our heart like "How much do I really love the people around me?" and "What are the core motivations of my life?". Seeing this book as another book about workplace evangelism is a superficial reading of a book that calls out to much, much more. Campbell's setting is mostly the workplace becasue that is where his experience lies. About My Father's Business is a profoundly challenging book for Christians ready to expand beyond knowing more to following Christ. Letting this book seep into your life will challenge you in new and fresh ways to live in daily dependence on the guidance of the Spirit and to live sacrifically out of the overflowing gratitude in your heart.

5 out of 5 stars great evangelistic tool!.......2005-12-14

This book includes an incredible tool for evangelism called the IMAP. It lined up perfectly with a passion for evangelism God was birthing in me, and as a result it's been one of the most impactful tools I've ever come across. It's helped me see the areas where I'm weak, it's given me consistency in keeping in touch with people, and it's given me vision for what to pray for them for. As I've had a desire growing again to have my time on this planet be all about personal ministry, this has been possibly the most effective tool I've come across to help me do that.

5 out of 5 stars really refocuses you on what Christianity is all about.......2005-08-18

It seems to me that today's mainstream evangelical Christianity is guilty of putting too much importance on what people SAY they believe, rather than placing importance on what beliefs actually have meaning in people's lives. About My Father's Business, written in an easy-to-grasp style and in terms that members of most evangelical churches will be comfortable with, urges us to return to the essence of Christianity. Campbell explains that as Christians we should focus on loving and building relationships with others (NOT just getting them to believe what we believe.) This is exactly the attitude that many churches (including my own) need to adopt in order to create a positive influence in today's society.

Go ahead and buy multiple copies, (if you have the $) because you will want your Christian friends to have this book too.

5 out of 5 stars Take this one step toward workplace spritual leadership.......2005-08-06

I saw this book for the first time at PromiseKeepers and was interested as soon as I cracked the cover. Campbell does an excellent job of explaining his thoughts about bringing Christ to work and walks the reader through the thought process. For most the thought of "evangelizing" at work sends shudders down the spine, but Campbell shows that it doesn't have to be as scary as many of us view it. His approach of meeting co-workers where they are and giving them what they need is refreshing, and is far more akin to wading into the shallow end of the pool than jumping into the deep end blind-folded. This book has helped move me on a path to increased comfort in spiritual leadership in the workplace. A must read for those who struggle with how to keep from checking Christ at the doorstep to work.

3 out of 5 stars Better late than never.......2005-12-30

Before reading this book, I couldn't help but wonder what a daughter who seemingly had devoted her entire life to embarrassing, humiliating, and politically opposing her father could possibly have to say about him as he entered the twilight of his life. Now, after reading the book, I'm still somewhat at a loss. The sentiments expressed are endearing, but the story line seems too slick, too polished, and perhaps a little too contrived to be easily believable. Is it really possible that the author could ignore her father's guidance and fret about such things as death all through her lifetime and then in the sunset of his life take solace in his thoughts and the examples he had set for her when she was but a child? I can't help but wonder.

Her introduction of political bias toward the end of the book also disappointed me. It seemed unnecessary; but it was also somewhat telling. By doing so, Patti made it clear that she never did, and at the time the book was written still didn't, understand her father, conservatism in general, or her father's conservative ideals. This was evident when she expressed surprise that her father could possibly believe that "God doesn't make distinctions on the basis of skin color" and went on to say that after hearing him say this she suggested to her brother that her father had spoken to the wrong convention. Ronald Reagan must surely have been one of the last people on earth who would believe otherwise; and either convention would certainly have cheered such a pronouncement -- albeit for different reasons. How could she not know that?

In any event, and regardless of her motives, I'm glad Patti Davis wrote this book. Hopefully, it helped set Reagan's mind at ease; and although it doesn't contain much new information about him, that which is included is quite revealing of his true nature and beliefs. So, despite its diminutive size and any questions concerning the author's objectives, it still makes a contribution to the Reagan legacy. As a minimum, it dispels the liberal myth that Ronald Reagan was not a spiritually motivated and deeply religious man. Hence, whether or not you question the author's motives, as I did, it is still worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Memoir.......2005-08-30

What a beautiful memoir for a daughter to write about her father. Patti Davis, as we all know, was at one stage the anti-Reagan of the Reagan family (hence her dumping of her father's surname.) For whatever reasons, she was at war with herself and consequently, she blamed her parents. Patti has since found peace within herself, and re-discovered her great love for her parents and indeed their great love (and patience) towards her. She also writes in an exquisite manner.

The title for this work comes from a question that the young Patti asked her father, namely, whether it was true that when you saw a falling star, it meant that an angel had just died. Ronald Reagan replied comfortingly, "Angels don't die" and this explanation was just one of many that he gave to his daughter's questions about life and death, and in doing so he imparted to his daughter the greatest gift anyone can give: the gift of faith.

Ronald Reagan, Patti explains, lived what appeared to be a `charmed life' and I find her explanation of this to be fascinating. To live a charmed life you have to be able to stand back from your life with its various problems in order to gain some perspective. The space between yourself and the situation you find yourself in is then filled with prayer. God takes away your fears, and gives you insights and answers in your heart.

Ronald Reagan lived his entire life with this ability to stand back and offer everything up to God. That's how he managed to take on the responsibilities of president with such ease and remain himself. He always treated people equally, be it a King or a doorman.

Though it didn't set out to do so, what I think this book leaves the reader with is the truth that in the end its not what level of success you might achieve in life financially or politically, what's ultimately important is character. And, Ronald Reagan's character was one of the most evolved that a person can attain.

I recommend this book for the above reasons; it's also good in that it details some of the supernatural occurrences surrounding Reagan (including angelic visitations) and helps readers in their own appreciation and understanding of their relationship with their parents.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-02-15

I really enjoyed reading this book. It tells of how much faith Reagan had and also how he gave her the greatest gift ever...faith. Wonderful, touching quick read.

5 out of 5 stars This Patti Davis Book received NO press hype, yet it is a be.......2004-06-12

There is a bitterness toward Ronald Reagan that does not subside. As the man was laid to rest on June 11, 2004 - there were two Tribune Columnists in South Florida that blamed President for AIDS epidemic caused by budget deficits. According to these elitist critics, Reagan created class warfare. Yet as we have witnessed from the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, The Gipper's mourners came from all walks of life.

When Patti Davis wrote scandalous books about her family, it was front page news. I found "Angels Don't Die" on the bargain rack of a bookstore chain shortly after publication. Like Ruben "Hurricaine" Carter's out-of-print book "The 15th Round," sometimes you do not find a book, sometimes the book finds you.

Patti wrote a book in which she reconciles with her father. "Angels Don't Die - My father's gift of Faith" is a spirtual book of common sense philosophy and conviction. Patti comes to grips with her father's emotional distance. Despite his showmanship and gregarious nature, Patti learns that her Daddy was really a very shy man.

This is a great book for people with older parents,
especialy as a coping tool for Baby Boomers and
Generation X reconciling with the World War II Generation.

4 out of 5 stars books.......2004-06-10

I have read several of her books. She's a good writer. I admire her nonconformity/questioning/candor/spirit/honesty/empathy/intuitionand altruistic love for her family. There were troubles in their family. There are troubles in every family or so I've heard. There was justifiable questioning and normal rebellion. What family hasn't experienced this? She helped to eliminate the mystic of famous people being perfect for me. The books she writes are not just about her family, but they do encompass the members as a portrayal of idealogical norms at the time, some of which she did not agree with .She was/is very vocal/honest. I believe that she writes from her heart and the book, for her, was cathartic. She tried to deduce, through her writing, what the problem was and how to fix it. She wanted to help her family, while, at the same time show their true nature. I want to extend, as always, my highest regards and heartfelt condolences during their time of grief.

3 out of 5 stars Preserving a Legacy.......2003-02-13

Unlike Chapman's other books on Christian living which generally take on an "outdoors" theme, this is primarily centered on passing on knowledge to his son.

How many men wish their fathers had done the same?

One essay. One Page. One Paragraph. Anything?

Chapman records his personal thoughts and ideas while always keeping them Christ-centered. Its hard to go wrong living a Christ-centered life.

I read this as prep work for reading Dr. Dobson's "Bringing up Boys". I wanted an insider's view of raising a Godly son, before I went with technical data. My 5 year old is already quickly becoming a young man and its helpful to understand the importance even now of passing on a legacy.

But is this a good book?

I found some nuggets worth keeping. Maybe the biggest thing I've learned however, is its time to set down some things I want my own child to learn.

Book Description

From the foreword by Donald Miller. The beauty of this story—of what you are about to read—lies in its subtlety. This isn’t a self-help book. If anything, it is a documentary. And I hope it is a documentary that gives you a glimpse through a window and into a family that has dedicated itself to this role of pastoring—a lost art that survives change, shifts in culture, even shifts in fashion.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Stories.......2006-03-05

The past sixty years has seen dramatic changes in the culture of America. These changes range from the way religion is viewed and the invention of new forms of media, to the general demise of racism and the controversies over abortion and homosexuality. How Christians have viewed and reacted to these changes has differed over time. Faith of My Fathers explores these changes and much more through the experiences of three generations of pastors.

Though Chris Seay is the principle author, Faith of My Fathers is really a conversation between a family of pastors united by their love for Christ but divided in their views of ministry and culture. The conversations take place between Chris, his brothers, Brian and Robbie, dad and grandfather (Papa). Donald Miller also adds his two cents from time to time.

After introducing themselves, the family begins by discussing inner-church issues, such as the use of different forms of media and music, multigenerational gaps, and the spiritual and family life of pastors. They then move on to discuss doctrine and how to properly understand the Bible. The conversation gets heated when they begin discussing abortion, James Dobson, and how Christians should be involved in politics (if at all). After addressing racial issues, Chris brings up a personal family matter to close the book.

The parts of the book I enjoyed most were those that resonated with my own experiences. Since multigenerational issues were part of the reason I left the church I grew up at, I was intrigued by that conversation. What I didn't appreciate about the book was the input of Donald Miller. Some of his comments, especially his rants again James Dobson and the Republican party, distracted from the stories of Chris's family.

In his foreword, Donald Miller describes Faith of My Fathers as a documentary (15), and I think that's the best way to approach it. Those who are looking for a `how to' in regards to the issues discussed won't find much direction. What they will find are rich and honest stories born out of the real life experiences of men who have sailed the rolling waves of a changing church and culture.

4 out of 5 stars The Generations Speak..........2005-12-04

Do yourself a favor: Ignore the title. Force yourself to at least read the first chapter. That's what I did.

Now, I don't know if it was some sort of male version of PMS or what, but I found myself against all logic continually moved with emotion. I was downright weepy at times-downright annoyed at others. It's embarrassing. Chris Seay, along with his brother Robbie, sat down for an extended conversation with his father and grandfather. All four are "career" ministers with very different philosophies of ministry. This book is nothing more than a transcript of that conversation, raw and mostly unedited. It is insightful, honest and a must read for anyone who wrestles with the ongoing tension between church and culture.

Oh, and "Papa" definitely steals the show.

Should you buy the book? You'll know the answer to that after reading chapter one.

5 out of 5 stars A well-written and honest book about the importance of family in religion.......2006-06-01

In this delightful book, A LEGACY OF FAITH: Things I Learned From My Father, Ruth Graham honestly and tenderly shares what it was like growing up as the daughter of Billy Graham. Ruth, the third and youngest daughter, talks about what it was like to have a world-famous, traveling evangelist as a dad and the lengths to which her parents went to give their children a normal upbringing.

In six well-written chapters, Graham explores different lessons she learned from her father, including love for the world, grace and loyalty. From an early age all of the Graham children were schooled in the business of giving. One of her first Christmas memories is putting boxes together for the needy within the surrounding area. In fact, any gifts sent to the family were immediately given to those in need. Graham recounts a time when a generous patron sent the family a beautiful soda fountain and admits that was a hard gift to give away!

She also describes her mother's efforts to create a normal life for the children when their father was gone so much of the time. She talks about the excitement of her father's homecomings and the gifts he always brought back from his various trips. While home, Billy Graham spent long hours in his study reading, researching and preparing for the next set of meetings. While always welcome to interrupt, Ruth admits she limited any interruptions to a minimum --- not only during those times of study but throughout her growing up years. This was done with some regret.

Graham writes, "My father has set a high standard in giving himself wholeheartedly; I have sought more of a balance and tend to be more restrained. It may be that seeing my father give so much to others when I was a child caused me to become reserved in loving. I think I felt that he gave away so much of what was mine --- attention, concern, love and time --- that I became protective of my heart. I was not willing to give everything away."

In these tender moments, Graham acknowledges some of the pain that accompanied being the daughter of an evangelist to the world. She says there were certain times when she felt she needed her daddy but he simply wasn't there. Yet she acknowledges that it must have been just as difficult, if not more difficult, on him as he prayerfully handed over his family to the care of God time and time again.

Yet Ruth doesn't just reminisce about her father and mother. She also shares glimpses into her own life, which includes two marriages that ended in divorce. She talks about the shame she felt, but also the unwavering sense of love and support she received from her parents.

Overall, A LEGACY OF FAITH: Things I Learned from My Father is a wonderful keepsake book. The layout and design make it an enjoyable afternoon read or even a book to keep out for guests. It's filled with a rich assortment of photos from Ruth's childhood as well as from her father's years in ministry. This is the first time a Graham child has ever shared personal thoughts about growing up with Billy Graham as a father, and it's a book you won't want to miss.
