Mrs. Wishy Washy.......2007-09-29
I am a preschool teacher and I love using this book in my classroom and at home with my children! Great for beginner readers.
Wishy-Washy Winner.......2006-03-17
Joy Cowley has taken our favorite characters and put them into a full length story. The share an adventure to the city and realize that 'there is no place like home!' Mrs Wishy-Washy comes to the rescue just in the nick of time. A total winner!
some questionable words used.......2005-01-14
Be aware that this book uses the word 'hate' a few times and also refers to Mrs. Wishy Washy as 'mean' old lady...its a good fun story, and I still read it to my daughter, but I edit the choices of words along the way...she has the rest of her life to find out what hate is...a two year old doesn't need to know now.
So much fun!.......2003-11-12
This is a great book - full of good old fashioned rhyming fun. That's why my husband and I love it. Our toddler loves the colorful, charming illustrations. Either way, it's a winner and on our top ten list!
Mrs. Wishy-washy Delights Again.......2003-06-16
I teach kindergarten, and my students have read all the books about Mrs. Wishy-washy and her animals. This book has the same fun, joyful tradition of the other stories. The children's immediate comment was "Read it again!". One child wanted to write to Joy Cowley to see if she was going to write another one. This book is a winner.

This is the story of living saints and heroes-- those who abandoned affluent and middle-class lives to dedicate themselves to the poor.
Customer Reviews:
The City of Joy.......2007-09-26
An outstanding book. Highly recommended as essential reading for any thinking person and any person who truely cares about the world and the plight of humanity.
The city of Joy.......2007-01-11
One of the best boooks of Dominique La Pierre, makes you see reality as is, the acceptance with joy of the life you are to live.
"Disease Porn" is the perfect description.......2006-10-30
One of the reviewers below described the book as "cardboard cut-out disease porn" and that is the most apt, succint way to describe "City of Joy". The book dives into rampant filth, disease and raw physical suffering with about as much preamble and relish as any porn video dives into sex. It is about as uplifting as self-flagellation, and as inspiring as Fear Factor.
"... a heartrendering tale of the real heros of Calcutta, a tale of the indomitable spirit of humankind to triumph..." .......2006-05-19
"...The 'City of Joy' shall be remembered as the best account of the life of the people in Calcutta's slums; of the city's never-say-die attitude. The book presents a very emotional account of the daily lives of the poor in the city, and makes the reader fall in love with these little heros, who daily fight the battle of life to mete out a subsistence existence. The book is an eye-opener to the people who have never faced the adversities of life. The author has done a brilliant job in portraying the poor with compassion and empathy. A true masterpiece..."
STORY OF THE UNBREAKABLE HUMAN SPIRIT.......2006-01-05
No other book I had ever read has ever made me more proud about the fact that I am an Indian or importantly, a human being. The moving story, that the author claims is based on facts is probably based on a true one. What is truly remarkable though, is the fact that this is probably not an unusual story or for that matter even an uncommon one! It happens, more so in India that anywhere else, despite 200 years of British rule the Western had not been able to take from these people what they prize most, their dignity. People trying to live a decent life, who hope to live with at least an ounce of self-respect going to great extremes to attain it.
It doesn't surprise me to know this today, nor does it surprise me to know it took so long for the world to know this. What amazes me is that so many Indians have written such bad reviews about this book. It seems ironic that a book that tells a story about the majority of Indians who are uneducated is not appreciated by the minority that are. It makes sense though. This book doesn't directly attempt to glorify India's culture, its traditions or values. Instead it speaks about the bitter realities of a ghetto that almost all educated Indians with a modern outlook likes to pretend don't exist. These are the people that Westerners mostly interact with, these are the people who want to impress India to the rest of the world, and the truths in this book are not what they would think is impressive. It still impressive none the less. In fact it is more than impressive that even at the lowest of low of economic degradation a man can still try to live a life of dignity - the kind that every human being deserves to live with.
IF AFTER READING THIS BOOK YOU SHED A TEAR, either of joy or sorrow, GO TO THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE MOST AND TELL THEM HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM, thank them for who they are and after that thank God for the beauty that is your life and lastly thank yourself because you are a wonderful human-being.
Book Description
With youthful enthusiasm, eighteen-year-old Friend Pitts Williams absorbed the world's fair of 1893 and candidly recorded his illuminating and sometimes romantic observations in this diary. As did millions of others, he traveled by train to Chicago and immersed himself in the captivating sights and events of the greatest world's fairthe watershed and record-breaking World's Columbian Expositon, popularly called "The White City."
His insightful record is illustrated with 270 photographs that the authors have carefully selected from their extensive Columbian Exposition reference library which exactly match the scenes the young man describes.
Customer Reviews:
The Illustrated 1893 Diary of a Trip to the World's Columbian Exposition.......2007-03-26
The book was a nice quick read and skillfully matched the diary of an 18 year old young man attending the the Expo with his father while displaying photographs of what he was observing. Anyone interested in Chicago or US histoty should enjoy the book.
To have experienced it all!.......2004-01-11
The written descriptions and frank comments in Friend Pitts Williams' diary of his trip to the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893 conjures in the reader's imagination the sights that young Friend encountered. Dybwad and Bliss artfully supplemented the text of William's delightfully fresh diary with over 275 photographs and images of most all of the exhibits, buildings, displays, and galleries that Williams encountered on his trip. The reader gets a sense of the sheer magnitude and grandeur of this phenomenal exhibition which occured near the turn of the last century. Now all that remains is the din of voices, music, and machine; the smells and tastes of exotic foods, popcorn, and confections; and the summer breeze of the "windy city." Oh, to have experienced it all!
Book Description
Girls From Da Hood 2 is the story of Helena, Storm and Keyshawn, three very different young ladies living in Marcy projects who are linked together by one man. His name is Malek Shaw, and he's the best and the worst thing that's happened to each one of them.
Helena Smith's life was on track. She was an A+ student and just voted most likely to succeed in her high school class. She was just about to get out of the ghetto on an academic scholarship until the night of her boyfriend's eighteenth birthday. Now her father's in jail, her mother's abandoned her and she's carrying her boyfriend's brother's child.
All Storm Johnson wanted to do was have her baby and spend the rest of her life with her boyfriend, Malek. That is until she woke up one day to find the police knocking at her door. Now she's being charged with possession of drugs with the intent to distribute, and Malek is nowhere to be found.
Keyshawn Nixon is Malek's old flame. She used to be a prostitute, but now she's left the life and is looking for revenge on Malek, the man who turned her out.
Customer Reviews:
The Path to self destruction........2007-04-01
Nikki, Kashamba and Joy are among the most popular authors of today and I expect to be highly entertained whenever I read any of their novels.
Well of course these ladies didn't disappoint...as always they write with an edgy realness that makes you feel like you either have to kick some as* or comfort someone. These authors have delivered three good stories that will surely prompt the reader to stay tuned for the next installment.
Each author has written in her own style what really happens when someone follows the road to self destruction.
I liked all three stories.
Africa - I just wanted to shake her and tell her to wake up and smell the coffee.
Harmony - Is a wanna be, who becomes a has been...I like that twist AND I like Nikko...
Unique - I felt sorry for her but...what goes around comes around.
A recommended read especially if you've read the first book (this is the better book) or if you're planning on reading the third installment.

OK What is that all about they have the wrong editorial for this book anyway i bought this book and i read it in about 5 hours i loved it it was a page turner will order anything that has to do with these authors
Way better than the first!.......2006-06-05
Of course I started with the last story first because I had to see what has become of that hoodrat Unique. And of course Nikki Turner doesn't disappoint and the ending proves superb. I actually felt sorry for Unique's grimey behind but it just goes to show what goes around definitely comes back around. In "Chocolate girl", Kasamba Williams brings the facts. Finally a story about a believable character. One who's not popular in the looks department and experiences some real everyday issues. In "Wanna be", we read about a girl who just wants to fit in and be like her hommies. I was deceived by this story all the way until the end. What a surprise! The three authors of "Girls from the hood 2" really put it down on a serious note. Keeps you wanting more.
Jus Gets Better!!!.......2006-04-11
When I went and bought this book, I was expecting for it to be mind-blowing, intriguing, and better than the first... Needless to say I wasn't disappointed one bit.. I loved this book and felt it was worth every penny..
As for Unique, lets just say what goes around truly does come back around!!! Damn that story had me in tears...
I loved it and can't wait for Nikkki Turner's next Novel
GOOD!.......2006-01-20
Yeah this was good. Africa A.K.A. Chocolate was an ugly girl w low self esteem. She was always told she was ugly even by her own mother. Well, Africa gets kicked out the house. She meets a guy, but this is where she gets stupid. Harmony is a good rich girl, unitl she meets crack cocaine. Read along as she gets hooked and poor. Unique! This chick really gets what she deserves. I was happy they continued this story. This was betta than Girls From the Hood 1

Book Description
It was billed as the greatest event in the history of pair skating: three of the best teams of all time battling for Olympic gold on one night in Salt Lake City. Technical ability was approximately equal. It was the artistic merit score that would decide the gold medal -- the second mark.
Representing Canada, China, and Russia, the three pairs illuminated their distinct cultures. On the second mark, whose culture would triumph? Would it be the beauty of the Russians' ballet on ice, the thrill of the Chinese pair's heart-stopping acrobatics, or the Canadians' passionate connection with the audience? In a down-to-the-wire nail-biter, the difference between gold and silver came down to the vote of a single judge. Hours later, a bombshell: the confession of a French judge unleashed a worldwide debate -- and ultimately produced an unprecedented duplicate gold medal.
The Second Mark reveals what an athlete really goes through to become the best in the world, through the riveting stories of unforgettable people. We meet Yelena Berezhnaya of Russia, who survives emergency brain surgery after a near-fatal training accident and makes it back to the Olympics in less than two years. We meet Zhao Hongbo, a young boy skating in subzero weather in remotest China, who will fulfill his coach's twenty-year dream of catching up to the West. And we meet two Canadians, a barista and a concession stand worker, who had almost quit the sport before deciding to give it one last try -- and becoming world champions.
Exhaustively researched by a skating insider, The Second Mark takes readers deep into the world of the Olympic athlete, illuminating the fascinating differences between East and West. From the frozen fields of China to the secret corridors of the old Soviet sports system, from a tiny farm village in remotest Quebec to the judges' backstage world, The Second Mark tells the compelling human stories behind one of the most controversial nights in Olympic history.

Another take..........2006-02-10
I guess I'm wierd, but what I loved about this book was the backstories on the six skaters, their history, families, coaches, etc. Fascinating stuff. What I got from this was a whole new level of respect and admiration for the pairs skaters coming from Russia and China. I'm also happy to see that the two Chinese skaters featured in this book will be skating in Torino 2006. I'll be watching them with great interest - at least as much as NBC allows me to see of them - and thinking about little six-year old Shen Xue and her bloody socks. There's not much new ground broken on the scandal that rocked the Salt Lake City Olympics, but for anyone interested in knowing more about the skaters involved, I highly recommend this book.
Great Book!!.......2005-06-08
This book has interesting information on the childhoods, tribulations, and triumphs of Jamie Sale, David Pelletier, Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, and Elena Berezhnaya. The one person it is lacking information on is Anton Sikharulidze. It goes through their elite careers and touches on competitions leading up to the games. The play-by-play account of the Olympics brings you back to the day you watched the pair's final. If you are looking for information on the scandal other than what was printed in newspapers, don't bother reading this book. Overall, it gives information that is hard to find elsewhere on the six skater's lives before and after the Olympics. I highly reccomend this book.
Too much backstory.......2005-03-26
The book was not my cup of tea. I don't remember the events enough to care about any of the people covered in this book. The part I was most interested in was the scandal with the judging, not with the lovingly written back stories of each of the skaters. By the time the book got to the bit I was interested in I was bored and put the book aside.
Interesting take on an appalling scandal.......2004-12-02
Goodwin covers the Salt Lake figure skating debacle with style, if not altogether truth - the Russian pair gave a superb performance that on any other night would have been worthy of Olympic gold (and still might have in an uncorrupted panel, since it's a subjective sport). Bad judging, however, is nothing new; it takes place at all levels from the recreational ISI to the Olympics. Recommend for those who are interested in the scandal - otherwise, there's really nothing new that skaters and people who closely follow the sport don't already know.
Perfect marks for this one!.......2004-10-27
Being a fan of a sport such as figure skating, in a country where we don't have winter, is quite hard. I don't get to see as many competitions or information. It is refreshing to have internet, magazines, and a great book such as The Second Mark. It was so good that I couldn't put it down. Goodwin captured the escense of these six extraordinary athletes in a wonderful way. I recommend this book to everyone who loves a great story.

Michael Book, Lois Conner, Judith Joy Ross, Dawoud Bey, Linda Butler, Lee Friedlander, Gregory Conniff, Frank Gohlke, Larry Fink, Douglas Lucak, Nicholas Nixon, and Barbara Bosworth explore Cleveland from the Cuyahoga River to Lake Erie, through local neighborhoods, public schools, arts institutions, and urban gardens.

Emerging as Florida's largest inland city, Orlando in its infancy more resembled the Old West than the Old Southóa frontier town born in the days of the Seminole Wars. The free-spirited early years of cattle ranching and cowboys on the palmetto prairie gave way to a series of booms throughout the cityís history. Whether it was railroads, real estate, citrus, or tourism, Orlando has been a community able to cultivate growth through big dreams and an ambitious attitude. ÝÝ
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Florida Research and Great Pictures.......2004-04-29
Orlando: City of Dreams is a well researched, fascinating account of pre-Disney Orlando in particular and Florida in general. It leads the reader through Florida history as a frontier land of opportunity where fortunes were made, lost and made again. From Osceola's Head through Civil War battles, hurricanes and killer frosts it reads more like a novel than a history book.
The author grew up in Florida, moved out into the world then came back with a new appreciation for the Sunshine State. She includes a portfolio of vintage pictures which effectively enhance the wide open American feel of the book.

Book Description
Published in association with The Art Institute of Chicago
Explore the world of a Native American mound city more than
600 years ago. Based on new research and archival images, and in the same format as Abrams' critically acclaimed picture book biographies such as The Yellow House, this book relates the coming-of-age tale of a young Native American named Little Hawk. With his family and others from their tribe, Little Hawk is chosen to make a trading journey form his small village to the great mound city of Cahokia (800-1400 CE), in the midwestern United States.
In captivating illustrations, including a map of the journey and photographs that depict a range of period artifacts, Al Lorenz presents a historically accurate look at a people and a time that flourished well before the first Europeans arrived. AUTHOR BIO: Albert Lorenz has written and illustrated four other children's books for Abrams. He has been praised for creating "visual excitement" by The New Yorker, "winning visual detail to enjoy" by Booklist and "utterly transporting artwork" by Kirkus Reviews. His illustrations appear in numerous magazines, including The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, and Architectural Record. Lorenz is a professor at Pratt Institute in New York.
