Developer Book.......2007-02-04
It's a school book with an enormous amount of information. It would take years to go through. Great for a class course where an instructor could teach the chapters quickly and point out all of the important details.
It's a good starting point..........2007-01-05
This book is a well intentioned attempt at explaining the development process. Unfortunately, development is too specific depending on project type and region to be easily summed up in one volume. If you are looking for a lengthy and well detailed process overview, this book is for you. If you need something a little more specific, keep searching and let me know if you find something.
Textbook, Not Real World.......2006-09-06
Coverage of theoretical, not application. Useful for referencing concepts and reinforcing a specific point, but much more of a teaching text than reference material.
worst than boring school text book.......2006-08-11
This book is worst than school text book!!! Don't understand how others rated this book so highly. It is full of principles and theories vs. practicle real life informations. If you want to waste $$ or if your desire is to obtain dry, boring book to help you sleep, this is the one.
all about development.......2006-02-25
This book is very helpful to the novice real estate developer or student. It's very clearly written and the information is well ordered. Ideas, concepts and explanantions are well expressed. The glossary is also helpful. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Upon completion of study with Beginnings & Beyond, students will have an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of early childhood education?from its history to present issues and future trends. They will appreciate the emphasis on multiculturalism and NAEYC?s developmentally appropriate practice. This approach promotes a ?both/and? viewpoint, maintaining that there is more than one correct way to care for and educate young children. The text focuses on this viewpoint in discussions of early literacy, spiritual development, discipline, diversity and anti-bias strategies and family relationships. Beginnings & Beyond also stresses the importance of maintaining an awareness of each child?s needs and interests by featuring such concepts as multiple intelligence, ecological theory and NAEYC?s Code of Ethical Conduct. The use of a variety of sidebars, chapter activities, integrated technology and other extras enhance the student?s interest in and retention of the material.

Don't be an American ........2007-03-04
I have used this book for two different child development classes now. If I read abut being culturally sensitive (which to the authors apparently means forget you are an anglo saxon christian american) I will truly be ill. I'm all for accepting everyone for what they are, and abhor racism, but come on, are we supposed to forget that we may be Christian white americans???? The book seems to want us to forget holidays, in case you may offend one person somewhere along the line, and wants you to accept it as okay if some children are brought late to class, because in their culture, being late is okay??? Please.
A wonderful resource for parents and educators.......2006-11-10
I purchased the book for a child development class. I use it constantly for evaluating program, activities and observations of children for educational purposes. It's a great reference.
A Wonderful, Refreshing Child Development Book.......2003-09-07
Finally, a book that offers sensible and realistic approaches to child development which departs from "mythical" ideas of past and archaic culture. Luckily, this volume isn't afraid to address the homogenous fallacies that have plagued our society and discusses significantly the exploration of truly modern theories embraced around the world. People of all walks of life, education, and backgrounds will rejoice in an important concept that this book teaches: genuinely nurturing children as opposed to treating them like pets.
Still the Best.......2002-10-18
Beginnings and Beyond is still the best Early Childhood Education text out there.
Moral people beware.......2002-08-21
If you have a conservative, moral or Christian bone in your body, this book will sicken you beyond your wildest imagination. If you fall into any of the above described categories, then this book will classify you as a "European male," or of "European Ancestory". This book preaches strongly a so called "diversity" but if you are a white male the "diversity" of opinions stops. (unless of course you decide to agree with the author.) And if you are a Catholic, you have even more to digest, as the book reaks of anti-Catholicism.
Book Description
"This is not a book about how to collect qualitative data but rather what to do with qualitative data that have been collected. . . . For evaluators who work with qualitative data, this book provides a wealth of ideas on organizing, analyzing, and presenting such data. It is. . . a set of resources for practicing teachers. It is well-organized, clearly written, and practical. I have recommended the book to graduate students seeking advice on ways to treat the data from their field studies, and they too have found it helpful."
--Thomas A. Schwandt in Evaluation and Program Planning
"Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman maintain a high degree of integrity in what they propose and how they present their material. . . . The authors also offer a thorough presentation of issues in qualitative research. The book progresses logically and will be of great assistance to anyone engaged in qualitative research. . . . An excellent addition to any researcherâs library."
--Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation
"The book offers communication researchers some of the best recent work on qualitative inquiry in the human disciplines. . . . Published by Sage, the leading publisher of qualitative research in the social sciences today. . . . Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman offer a ''must-own'' text, in the revisions of their highly influential sourcebook on qualitative data analysis. . . . This second edition updates the 1984 edition, outlining a complex and comprehensive model for a causal, grounded theory and variable approach to the management, analysis, and interpretation of qualitative data. A valuable appendix reviews over 200 computer-assisted models of qualitative data analysis. . . . This work brings the communication scholar up-to-date on where qualitative methods are in current sociological and educational discourse."
--Norman K. Denzin in Journal of Communication
"The first edition of this book was terrific, and the second edition sets even higher standards. Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman simply demystify qualitative data analysis, offering practical advice on how to code text and how to compare cases systematically. Most important, they bring the conceptual power of matrix analysis to qualitative research. This book is not just for qualitative social scientists, though. Itâs a must-have book for anyone who teaches social research methods."
--H. Russell Bernard, University of Florida
"The second edition of
Qualitative Data Analysis is a stunning accomplishment, a major advance beyond their first edition. Thoroughly comprehensive in scope, well-written, and easily accessible, Qualitative Data Analysis provides the best developed and most rigorous set of analytic procedures now available in the social sciences. Qualitative researchers have, with this new edition, a revised and expanded version of their Bible. Its virtues are many: guidelines for reducing and displaying qualitative data; how to build a grounded, conceptual framework; advice on sampling and coding strategies; how to do within and cross-case designs and matrix displays; a thorough review of the ethical issues in qualitative analysis; and strategies for writing and presenting the final report. I recommend that this book be on the shelf of every qualitative researcher. No significant work can be done in this area without reference to Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Hubermanâs new book."
--Norman K. Denzin, University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign
"I think this is a terrific book, and a definite improvement over the first edition. The additions to Chapters 1 and 2 and the new Chapter 3, address issues that have become increasingly important since the first edition was published, and will make the book more useful and influential. The additions to Chapters 4 and 5 are also useful, as is the reorganization of Chapter 5 to make it more coherent. Itâs also more user-friendly."
--Joseph Maxwell, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University
"It is a goldmine of ideas, sources, tactics, recipes, warnings, aphorisms, examples, and questions. A wondrous collection."
--Harry F. Wolcott, University of Oregon
In 1984, the
First Edition of
Qualitative Data Analysis addressed a critical need faced by researchers in all fields of the human sciences-how to draw valid meaning from qualitative data. It provided methods of analysis that were practical, credible, and reliable. This groundbreaking book has now been revised to take up where the first edition left off and account for the phenomenal expansion of qualitative inquiry since then. In the
Second Edition, Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman bring the art of qualitative data analysis up-to-date, adding hundreds of new techniques, ideas, and references that draw on the experience of the authors and many colleagues in the design, testing, and use of qualitative data analysis methods. Each method of data display and analysis is described and illustrated in detail, with practical suggestions for adaptation and use. The growth of computer use in qualitative analysis is reflected throughout this volume, which also includes an extensive appendix on criteria useful for choosing among the currently available analysis packages.
Using examples from a host of social science and professional disciplines and stressing a hands-on, practical approach,
Qualitative Data Analysis,
Second Edition remains the most complete treatment of this topic available to scholars and applied researchers.

Qualitative Data Analysis: An Expanded Sourcebook(2nd Edition).......2007-08-23
Don't let the date published scare you away from this book. The guides are applicable to any person wishing to perform qualitative data analysis.
Fantastic resource for first-time researchers.......2007-03-22
As a first time qualitative researcher, I found this book indispensible during my data analysis. It clearly explains multiple analytic techniques, providing the researcher with many alternatives to use in developing conclusions. The descriptions are easy to understand and supported by insightful examples. If you are looking for a roadmap to guide you through qualitative research, this is the GPS of qualitative data analysis.
the nuts and bolts to put the thing together.......2006-07-20
I am working on my dissertation. This book got me out of my thinking chair and to my writing desk. The philosophical approach to qualitative research is very contemporary and will take us into whole new areas of research to improve and 'polish' humanity. My only objection is the cost. Does a book like this really have to cost over $60? Too much.
This is just awesome. This opens up a whole universe for the qualitative researcher........2006-01-27
When one thinks of qualitaitve research one tends to think immediately of focus groups and face to face interviews - but increasingly with research the game is shifting toward online surveys that generate wonderful amounts of open-ended content, and research projects may also involve ethnography and content analysis to gain rich insights. In other words the focus of the professional must shift toward that quesiton: "what on earth do we do with all this 'soft' data?" Those verbatims, those observation notes... there's a huge amount of data waiting for interpretation. Can you systematically analyse it?
Here in 13 comprehensive chapters, over 338 pages the issues are explored from multiple angles, and what Miles & Huberman have achieved in this sourcebook is a thorough starting point for researchers who want to reliably and systematically - dare I say, scientifically - interpret the soft data they must work with. This book is by turns brilliant and inspiring - helped along by clear prose that talks to us as professional colleagues.
I recommend this one very strongly. Your colleagues will blanche when they see you carrying this big grey book - but if they get over the seemingly dry subject matter, they see that these authors have prepared a pathway along which serious qualitative researchers ought to travel.
Great Resource.......2002-05-31
As an advisor of doctoral students, I keep several copies of this book on the shelf so I always have one on hand to loan to students. I find it a very useful resource for students who are planning qualitative research.

Customer Reviews:
Don't rely on this country guide--buy the city guides instead!.......2007-08-07
My friend bought this guide for our trip through Italy this summer. Our trip went through Venice, Florence and Rome, with side trips into Tuscany and Naples/Pompeii. This book contains information on so many different places that it does not provide much useful information on any one city. We felt so lost in Venice and Florence with the scant information provided in this book that we ended up buying the LP Rome City Guide when we got to Rome. You would be much better off buying individual city guides before you leave the US though because travel books are very expensive once you're in the city. I have used many LP books over the years for both domestic and international travel, but I would recommend city books from now on.
a disappointment.......2007-06-11
I own about 20 Lonely Planet guides and am a real fan.
This is probably the most disappointing one to date.
The info seems to be all over the place, sometimes completely wrong or the opposite of what you would expect : A luxury complex in the book was a real dump in reality, a palace not worth while, was probably the best thing we saw on our 10 day trip.
Complete "must see" places are missing and others who LP claims to be "must see" were not that great, so overall the weakest LP guide I've read and used so far.
They should start this one from scratch
excellent service.......2007-05-03
wonderful speedy service from the bookseller. I am in New Zealand and I was getting a little apprehensive - I thought I would not get the book in time for our trip to Italy at the beginning of June but no it arrived here today and I am thrilled - thank you J K Books
Good for getting around & trivia, but not much else........2007-04-18
We just returned from a 10-day trip to Italy, mostly in Florence, Rome, and Milan. We carried both Lonely Planet Italy and DK Travel's EyeWitness Italy. Even though I've been a Lonely Planet devotee for years, I was very disappointed with Lonely Planet Italy.
Good points:
- Lonely Planet is GREAT for getting around. It has fantastic details on how to get from place to place. Even though we were flying in and out of lesser-known airports, the information we needed was there. Also, the Lonely Planet info made it a breeze to plan day trips to some of the smaller cities.
- Great tips! I think this is the biggest saving grace of Lonely Planet Italy. There were some fantastic tips for beating the crowds. In addition to information about advance bookings for museums (both in and outside of Italy), there was some great advice for avoiding queues at other major sights. This was especially helpful travelling during the super-crowded Easter holiday!
- Interesting Trivia. The one area of content that I actually picked up the Lonely Planet book to read was the little boxes of trivia. Things like a short history of Michelangelo's disagreements with the Popes. Most of these are usually fun and interesting to read.
- Lots of things to do! There were lots more listings in the Lonely Planet book compared to our Eyewitness.
- Extensive Hotel and Restarant Listings. The hotel listings are fine if you don't have another way to research them, but with so many great travel sites with candid traveller reviews, this doesn't make so much of a difference anymore. The restaurant listings are still helpful.
- Listings with admission fees. Our other guide mentioned in their listings if there were admission fees at places, but they didn't give the amount. It was nice to check Lonely Planet and know just how much things would cost, since some of the museums are not cheap!
- Lots of websites. I do most of my travel planning online before I leave, so I appreciated having the URLs for everything from hotels to museums to transportation.
Bad points:
- Crazy Itineraries. One thing I've always liked about the Lonely Planet books is the suggested itineraries like "Rome in 5 days." In the Italy book, this was only provided for Rome, which was disappointing, but the itineraries themselves were insane! There's actually a 2-day itinerary that covers almost ALL of Rome, which would be great for a whirlwind tour. The problem is that the longer itineraries were simply to finish the 2-day whirlwind and then see some more obscure sights. It seems that a better option would be to spend more time at the places visited in the 2-day trip. For example, explore some of the great museums that are in some of the areas glossed over by the 2-day plan.
- Absolutely no ratings of listed attractions. The problem with listing so many things to do is that you have no idea which ones you should actually do! I've found this to be a general problem in the Lonely Planet series. In more than one case, we've gone to see something after reading an interesting description in our LP guide, only to find that it's actually pretty boring, and the ONLY interesting points were the ones mentioned in the book. Eyewitness had a "Star Sight" system to mark their highest suggestions, and we absolutely loved this.
- Not enough descriptions or explanations. For example, the Lonely Planet description of the Roman Forums is something like, "To the left was the Temple of So-and-So. Across from that are the remains of the columns that formed the Such-and-Such." Unfortunately, it never explains anything about Such-and-Such or So-and-So, or why they were important. So you really have no idea what you're actually seeing (except the name).
- Too hard to follow. I've accepted this for years, because Lonely Planet keeps the book costs down by printing mostly black and white text, but in some places, it's just too hard to describe where something is. It's too hard to walk through a city square and try to read the prose descriptions of what's around you, especially when it's decorated with a the small literary flourishes that adorned the descriptions in this guide.
Overall, I feel that I just wouldn't have gotten as much out of the trip with only the Lonely Planet book. It's great for the logistics of travelling, but once we'd reached our destination, it wasn't very helpful at all. I highly recommend the Eyewitness guide if you want to learn more about Italy while you're there: Italy (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
great book, but the cross-referencing..........2007-03-29
Great book, great line of books, but here's L.P.'s great quirk: despite an almost too complicated web of cross-references, you can't easily go from an item on the map to the description of that item. That is, if you're standing on Via del Corso and see that you are near five restaurants, it becomes a Herculean effort of page turning to find each of those five restaurants in the text. This seems like a minor point, but it will leave your cursing in the streets of Naples.
A solution that I came to in my more intense and grimy days of backpacking in small groups through Europe was to have one person carry a (well researched) Lonely Planet and another carry a (user friendly) Let's Go. This usually left us with all our bases covered.

The Monk and the Philosopher is a collection of father-son dialogues between Jean-François Revel, a French philosopher and journalist famous for his leadership in protests of both Christianity and Communism, and Matthieu Ricard, his son, who gave up a promising career as a scientist to become a Buddhist monk in the Himalayas. The conversations recorded in this book took place during 10 days at an inn in Katmandu. The range of their subjects is immense: What is Buddhism? Why does it have such appeal to many in the West? Why do Buddhists believe in reincarnation? What are the differences between Buddhist and Christian monastic life? How do science and individualism make authentic Buddhist practice difficult for Westerners to achieve? Despite the simplicity of many of these questions, Revel and Ricard never give simplistic answers. Their discussions are rich without being dense, and, even more notably, they take every question very personally. The result is a book perfectly suited as an introduction to the elements of Buddhist religion (with a good bit of Tibetan history thrown in) that is also an excellent description of what it has been like for one man (Ricard) to practice Buddhist faith. However, as Ricard wisely notes at the end of this book, "No dialogue, however enlightening it might be, could ever be a substitute for the silence of personal experience, so indispensable for an understanding of how things really are." The greatest strength of The Monk and the Philosopher may be its power to return readers to careful attention to the way we pass our days. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Jean Francois-Revel, a pillar of French intellectual life in our time, became world famous for his challenges to both Communism and Christianity. Twenty-seven years ago, his son, Matthieu Ricard, gave up a promising career as a scientist to study Tibetan Buddhism -- not as a detached observer but by immersing himself in its practice under the guidance of its greatest living masters.
Meeting in an inn overlooking Katmandu, these two profoundly thoughtful men explored the questions that have occupied humankind throughout its history. Does life have meaning? What is consciousness? Is man free? What is the value of scientific and material progress? Why is there suffering, war, and hatred? Their conversation is not merely abstract: they ask each other questions about ethics, rights, and responsibilities, about knowledge and belief, and they discuss frankly the differences in the way each has tried to make sense of his life.
Utterly absorbing, inspiring, and accessible, this remarkable dialogue engages East with West, ideas with life, and science with the humanities, providing wisdom on how to enrich the way we live our lives.
Customer Reviews:
Meaningful & Intellectually Provocative.......2007-09-02
The dialogue between Revel & Ricard are meaningful & intellectually provocative. Their open, critical & coherent discussion not merely enabled me to learn more about meaning of life, thru the lenses of both Western philosophy & Eastern Buddism, but also guided me to see things in a more lucid perspective. I look forward to exploring, learning, & experiencing more about the path to enlightenment introduced by Ricard.
Wonderful conversation on religion and philosophy.......2006-10-21
This is a father son conversation on religion and philosophy. It is a wonderful and enlightening look at Buddhism and rationality. What an extraordinary opportunity to explore the juxtaposition between a father and his rational philosophical beliefs and his son having grown up a westerner in a rational family and moving to the spiritual realm of Buddhism. His western lens is very helpful to understand this body of belief.
A must read if you are interested in a conversation that leads to understanding and learning that bridges the rational and the spiritual.
Fantastic.......2006-06-03
I really enjoyed this book at various levels. First of all, as an intellectual exchange of views between father and son, both of whom are obviously very knowledgeable in their fields of expertise. Most of the conversations between them took place in Nepal, and some in northern France. Secondly, I enjoyed it as a means to elucidate some points of Buddhist epistemology and metaphysics. Matthieu did a very good job as a spokesperson for Tibetan Buddhism. Thirdly, I enjoyed it because of what it made me aware of: views like those of Revel, an atheist and skeptical philosopher who stands in the ethical traditions of both Epicureism and Stoicism, are not enough to satisfy my spirit's quest for a comprehensive and organic view of life, since they are issued from a merely philosophical and scientist perspective.
Every time Matthieu made a good point, Revel's reply would be like : "Oh, this idea too was known in the Western philosophical tradition...So and so said the same thing..." It may well be true, but all of these views are part of the Buddhist organic, comprehensive tradition, the chief aim of which is to attain liberation from the illusion of the self, or enlightenment. Clearly Revel prefers a syncretistic approach to a straight forward, comprehensive one, like the Buddhist or the Christian paths.
This was obviously a conversation, not a debate, in which Matthieu would have won hands down. There are many unfavorable reference to Christianity, which makes me wonder if either one, especially Revel, has ever studied the Christian theological tradition.
Intelligent and insightful.......2005-08-05
As some others have said, I have dipped my toes into Buddhism here and there and can say quite frankly that this is the first book that I thought really helped me to understand and visualize this religion/living system without getting too abstract immediately, or without being over simplified and childish. I truly felt that the dialogue challenged my understanding of Buddhism yet helped me get my grounding so that I can begin a deeper and wiser exploration. The usage of metaphoric and poetic language on the part of Matthiew was helpful for me to begin visualizing the ideals of Buddhism, and having Jacques play devil's advocate ensured that it was a healthy and balanced discussion that I truly got caught up in. It's an insightful conversation that makes you feel you are almost the third at the table and I look forward to revisiting this discussion often.
Not really a dialog; more of an introduction to Buddhism.......2005-04-30
As many reviewers have explained, this book is the transcript of a long series of discussions between French philosopher Jean-Francois Revel and his son Matthieu Ricard, a Tibetan Buddhist monk.
The majority of the book consists in Mattieu Ricard explaining basic principles of Tibetan Buddhism, and his father asking questions. They spend a lot of time clearing away basic misconceptions. In reading this book I felt that Revel could have answered nearly all the questions he put to his son by simply reading a few introductions to Tibetan Buddhism.
When I bought the book, it was under the belief that they would be having a two-way dialog, discussing issues from their different perspectives. That is not at all what happens, and this book really works best as an introduction to Buddhism. If you are new to Tibetan Buddhism and you are interested in learning a lot about it, this is a very good introduction, because Revel is not a Buddhist and asks a lot of the kinds of questions Westerners will inevitably ask of Buddhism. It succeeds well on its own modest terms.

This is a Signed - Limited Edition book which comes with a 45 minute CD of Steve McQueen reviewing his scripts for the movie Tom Horn. This book covers Steve McQueen's final 3 1/2 years up to and including his untimely death from Cancer. Includes around 400 Color and Black & White Photos taken by Barbara McQueen.
Customer Reviews:
A Must for McQueen Fans.......2007-03-10
Wow, the photographs are beautiful and highly personal. It's like seeing a private photo album from this marriage. Plus the text is informative and revealing. I'm so glad this part of Steve's life is now so well documented.
It goes perfectly on my coffee table.
The Real Steve McQueen.......2007-03-10
Intimate, touching, insightful, sometimes hilarious passages into the life of The King of Cool, Steve McQueen. We live in such a visual, media oriented world that we tend to get preconceived notions of who movie stars are, based on what we see. The world saw Steve McQueen as the ultimate man- handsome, macho, cool, someone they could spend their hard-earned bucks on back in the day and get their money's worth at the theater. Barbara McQueen, his widow, saw the real Steve McQueen. She got to know Steve, the family man; Steve, the man who loved the great outdoors and his morning constitutional; Steve, the great mashed potato guru, airplane and motorcycle enthusiast. "The Last Mile" shows how little we all knew of his kindness and philanthropy; how little we knew of his yearning for happiness and how he ultimately found it. The photos in this book will enchant you, leave you wanting more. One of my favorites is one where Barbara embraces Steve from behind. That photo alone is worth the book to me. Beautiful model, handsome superstar, real people worn out from what life has dealt them. You can see it in their faces. It makes me sigh everytime I see it because there's not one person I know who hasn't been to that point and had nothing left but an embrace. You will love this book and you will want more. I guarantee you.
Steve McQueen: The Last Mile.......2007-03-10
This book takes you into the very intimate and private world of Steve McQueen between 1977 and 1980.
Consisting of approximately 150 color photos (most of which were taken by his wife Barbara McQueen) and accompanied by Barbara's recollections of their time together.
Unlike some other photobooks where you sense you are watching the star pose, this book shows you the absolutely unguarded and relaxed side of the man as he goes about his daily life, talking to friends, tinkering on his bikes, dozing in an armchair or washing down the pavement outside his airplane hanger.
These are the sort of photos you would usually never see of a movie star - Steve in the morning before he has showered, looking drowsily over a hot mug of coffee, househunting in Montana with Barbara, or lying asleep on the living room floor with his pet dog lying on top of him.
You really feel like you have stepped into Steve and Barbara's house, it is that personal.
The text accompaniment is also very entertaining and educational as Barbara shares her memories of how Steve wooed her, the initial problems he had to overcome in winning her parents approval of the relationship, his personal lessons to her on how to dismantle and rebuild a motorcycle (sadly unsuccessful) or a gun (successful), how he came to propose, and many other intimate and fun moments. Overall it takes you through their entire relationship and serves as something of an autobiography in itself.
All these photos are beautifully presented in a high gloss large coffee table book format.
Released with the first limited edition run of the book is a 45 minute audio CD of Steve verbally working through the script of the film "Tom Horn". It is fascinating to hear him talk about his vision of the film, rework the script and plan his character. You get a real sense of the epic film he wanted Tom Horn to be (but was denied due to the studio slashing the budget), and you realise just how insightful he was with film and acting. The amount of thought he puts into his role should forever dispel the notion that he just played himself on film.
Steve McQueen - The Last Mile is a very special book and no fans collection will be complete without it.
Fantastic!.......2007-03-10
A fantastic book on the last years of legend Steve McQueen! Great job by Barbara McQueen and Marshall Terrill! Touching moments! Great photos!

complete and awesome.......2007-10-09
this is a very complete and up-to-date reference for both digital and analog recording. highly recommended for those seeking information on the technical side of audio engineering
Good, thorough, and useful.......2007-10-01
Modern Recording Techniques was the required textbook for a class on live sound reinforcement that I am taking. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how readable and user friendly it is. The author does a good job in breaking subjects up into bite size (understandable) pieces that fit into the bigger scheme of things. For a textbook this is actually pretty straightforward and useful. If you are looking for a single source of information this is a good book, and the campanion website has added features so that you can hear examples and find out more. I definitely recommend it.
Another good one from Huber.......2007-09-24
I bought Huber's book on MIDI to be used as the text for a college class. When coupled with Modern Recording Techniques, the MIDI book made much more sense. Takes you from where MIDI left off and puts that knowledge to work. Again, written in a clear and concise manner, no frills, just good working and practical knowledge Buy both both his books.
Excellent.......2007-09-16
Product shipped very quickly and arrived in near perfect condition. Couldn't ask for more.
For those who don't understand including other reviewers.......2007-07-09
after reading a few reviews, i was pretty disturbed. although proof reading is very important to writing a book, i would hardly use it to build a strong argument why this book is not any good. I have a copy that is ten years old and is still extremely useful today. That's the beauty of this book. It's a reference book that holds it relevancy to an industry that is so ever changing. i guarantee you that books that try to show you the latest gadgets and opinions will be outdated if not obsolete within 5 years. I think think this book will give you an awesome foundation in sound recording no matter where technology goes. As a producer it's kinda like a switch blade and you never know how far down the road you will use this little "insignificant" tool. It might not answer in detail what you are looking for, but it will surely direct you on the path you need to go. what other sound recording book do you know of will stand the test of time like this one?
gotta respect the wisdom of the old engineers and producers. they ARE the reason why you have the plug-ins that you do for your DAWs.

Must for Hebrew Students.......2007-06-08
Just got them today! And I realize how desperately I needed a memory study tool like this. Perfect.
Excellent for any biblical Hebrew student.......2007-03-14
These cards are great for any student of biblical Hebrew. The only thing that I wish were different is that I wish they were in alphabetical order rather than the order of the book associated with these cards. But the print is very readable, the paper is sturdy, they are the perfect size, and basically everything about the cards themselves is great. You won't be disappointed with the cards themselves, but like I said it would be easier for those of us not using the related book if they were in alphabetical order.
very goog.......2007-01-10
Do you want to learn biblical hebrew ? buy thoses card.
PO FAURE ( France)
In addition you can buy an interlinear bible and the Main concordance of Mr Strong ( i. e. Strong main concordance )
Success.......2006-11-06
Last year I attempted to learn Hebrew on my own vollition without these cards. This year I actually have learned the Vocabulary. Though they are strangely organized at first you can easily place them in better order with their numbering system. Very good purchase.
Is it best or second best?.......2006-07-24
This is one of the two big (about 1000 cards/words) sets of pre-made Biblical Hebrew flash cards readily available for purchase on Amazon. Recently I reviewed the other set, the Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary Cards by Dillard, which sell on Amazon for $12.95. The Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary Cards by Van Pelt and Pratico (part of the Zondervan product line) sell for $17.95, a bit more. As I noted in my review of the Dillard set, if I were still a starving college student, the five dollar difference alone might have inclined me toward Dillard. Now that I've got a real job in the real world, I sprung for BOTH of them. I have been using both of them in my personal study of Hebrew and I like them both, though each is a little different from the other with different strengths.
In my review of the Dillard set, I stated that I liked it the best. I still think I do, but I might have been reacting a bit to what I thought was an unfairly negative review of the Dillard cards by one reviewer. The same reviewer in a shorter review of the Van Pelt and Pratico cards says the Dillard set is "plain awful." I strongly disagree. Basically, the two sets are quite similar: Hebrew on one side and English on the other. There would not be many people who could learn from one but not from the other. But in this review, I will highlight the advantages of the Van Pelt and Pratico set, which I will call Van Pelt for short.
Van Pelt cards are keyed to four Hebrew grammar texts: one by Van Pelt and Pratico themselves, and the others by Futato, Ross, and Seow. I'm not using those at the moment, but if I were that would be very helpful. Some of the cards have some ancillary information such as alternative spellings and irregular plurals (but in smaller print). The Van Pelt cards are a little larger overall. Their length is a little less than the Dillard cards (which are the same length as many standard business cards) but the width is greater than the Dillard cards (not quite the width of a standard business card). And the paper is a little thicker and stiffer than the Dillard set. To me this makes no difference but perhaps the Van Pelt set will last longer because of the thicker paper. The print on the Van Pelt is a regular Hebrew word processor font. The Dillard uses hand calligraphy. What I consider an unfair review of Dillard states that the Dillard calligraphy was not well done and that it was difficult to read. I think the Dillard calligraphy is excellent and quite readable. But if you are myopic and need very big print, the Van Pelt will be better for you (but as I noted, it has some ancillary information in smaller print; the Dillard cards have even more ancillary information in smaller print. But even the smallest print on either card is larger than newprint).
The Van Pelt set advertises an "internet support site" but really this is just an advertisement site for other Van Pelt and Practico products as well as some other Biblical language products. What is not mentioned on the box is that there is a audio CD by a different author "Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary: Learn on the Go" by Jonathan T. Pennington, as part of the same Zondervan product line, in which the most frequent Hebrew Bible words are pronounced. These are not in the same order as the numbered Van Pelt cards, but one can rearrange the cards and put them in the same order. I recently bought the audio CD but I haven't worked with it yet. I cannot attest that the words are exactly the same, but since both sets claim to have about 1000 of the most common Hebrew words in the Bible, there should be a very significant overlap. One could actually use the CD with either the Van Pelt or the Dillard cards though I might expect that they would match the Van Pelt set better. Also, there is a book on Hebrew vocabulary, which I don't own, called The Vocabulary Guide for Biblical Hebrew by Van Pelt and Pratico, which probably parallels the Van Pelt cards quite well.
If you look up the Amazon listing for the Dillard set, which is part of the huge Vis-Ed line of study cards, you can see the reasons why I prefer Dillard. To be honest, they are all weak reasons except for the fact that the Dillard cards frequently have a lot of ancillary information such as related grammatical forms and derivations that I find interesting and useful. In deciding which set to buy I would recommend consulting your teacher, if you have one. Also, if you are using one of the books cross referenced by Van Pelt, then Van Pelt is probably better for you. If you can afford it, do what I did---buy both.

Positive Books Crowd Out Negative Books.......2006-08-26
At first I thought this book was too much for children to absorb. But after seeing the kids' reaction to it and the content of other books the children could be reading, I realized the title of this review.
A Fabulous Character Ed Program!.......2006-03-27
Inch and Miles are now the central characters in our schoolwide character ed program! This beautiful book with powerful lessons from Coach Wooden has been the perfect addition to our program, and it is not the same old charater ed stuff you see everywhere! Each classroom in our school has a copy of the book, and we focus on one or two traits of the Pyramid each month. Students are selected as Students of the Month based on the trait for that month. Every student in the school keeps an on-going journal of writing related to each trait, and students perform special skits, songs, poems, etc related to the traits in the book at our weekly assemblies. Whether you use it individually or schoolwide, this book is a must have for teachers and parents!
A Teacher's Point of View.......2005-10-02
I used this book to begin the school year. I had my students listen to the story to guess each part of the pyramid of success. After the story we built our own pyramid on a bulitan board and discussed all of the elements needed to be successfull. Now I refer to the bulitan board to remind the children of what they are to be doing. This has been a great tool to teach character to my students while keeping control of my class. Inch and Miles are my new class mascots!
Tried and True Journey to Success.......2005-05-07
As a Principal of an elementary school I gave this book to each of my teachers this Fall and we read the book together round-robin style. What an experience! Their enthusiasm has carried through the whole school as our students have all had discussions of the various blocks, the value of hard work and being a person of integrity whatever your path. We so appreciate that Coach Wooden put his successful system into a kid-friendly venue to reach even our kindergarteners. A must-have book for adults as well as children to assist in returning to the basic roots of a successful society. Yes, enthusiasm is important, but staying the course, inch by inch, with confidence and poise, hard work and determination will ensure great accomplishments. So, "hootie-toot-toot" to a rival Bruin we will always be indebted to! Fight on!
Wonderful, Inspirational Book that Every Child Should Have.......2005-04-14
What a wonderful book! The illustrations are colorful and filled with interesting characters. Each block in the "pyramid of success" describes a value in an animated and fun format. A great inspirational book that teaches everyone to to be their best! A terrifically well written that should be shared with everyone you love.
I bought a batch of "Inch and Miles" and gave the book away as presents to my family and friends. "Inch and Miles" is our favorite book in our home library. We recommend this book to parents, educators, and coaches.

"He was," as Salon's Gary Kamyia notes, "20th-century drug culture's Poe, its Artaud, its Baudelaire. He was the prophet of the literature of pure experience, a phenomenologist of dread.... Burroughs had the scary genius to turn the junk wasteland into a parallel universe, one as thoroughly and obsessively rendered as Blake's."
Why has this homosexual ex-junkie, whose claim to fame rests entirely on one book--the hallucinogenic ravings of a heroin addict--so seized the collective imagination? Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch in a Tangier, Morocco, hotel room between 1954 and 1957. Allen Ginsberg and his beatnik cronies burst onto the scene, rescued the manuscript from the food-encrusted floor, and introduced some order to the pages. It was published in Paris in 1959 by the notorious Olympia Press and in the U.S. in 1962; the landmark obscenity trial that ensued served to end literary censorship in America.
Burroughs's literary experiment--the much-touted "cut-up" technique--mirrored the workings of a junkie's brain. But it was junk coupled with vision: Burroughs makes teeming amalgam of allegory, sci-fi, and non-linear narration, all wrapped in a blend of humor--slapstick, Swiftian, slang-infested humor. What is Naked Lunch about? People turn into blobs amidst the sort of evil that R. Crumb, in the decades to come, would inimitably flesh out with his dark and creepy cartoon images. Perhaps the most easily grasped part of Naked Lunch is its America-bashing, replete with slang and vitriol. Read it and see for yourself.
Book Description
Naked Lunch is one of the most important novels of the twentieth century. Exerting its influence on the work of authors like Thomas Pynchon, J. G. Ballard, and William Gibson, on the relationship of art and obscenity, and on the shape of music, film, and media generally, it is one of the books that redefined not just literature but American culture. Reedited by Burroughs scholar Barry Miles and Burroughs's longtime editor James Grauerholz, Naked Lunch: The Restored Text includes many editorial corrections to errors present in previous editions, and incorporates Burroughs's notes on the text, several essays he wrote over the years about the book, and an appendix of 20 percent all-new material and alternate drafts from the original manuscript, which predates the first published version. For the Burroughs enthusiast and the neophyte, this volume is a valuable and fresh experience of this classic of our culture.

(3.5): An Important Yet Flawed Novel..........2007-03-02
I'm not sure how to digest "Naked Lunch" let alone write a review about it. Burroughs' text is one of the most important to come out of the Beats, yet it's hard to read and didn't leave me with any sense of satisfaction. The novel is a true example of a novel driven purely by style and form and I think it hurst the overall vision of the text. I understand that the cut and splice and often tangential writing is meant to recreate a junk addicts perspective, yet at the end of the day, if nothing comes out of the text other than "some of the anecdotes were really something," it's hard to say how successful the novel is. Did I like it? At times. Did I enjoy reading it? Somewhat. I most certainly think it's a novel that has an important place in American History and within American Literature, but I don't think it stands up to "On the Road" and some of the other texts to come out of the Beat Generation.
Not Burroughs' best.......2006-09-08
Although NL has been acclaimed as genius, WSB himself didn't think it was successful. Those of you who are turned off by the contrived shocking imagery of NL and won't read another WSB novel: Please reconsider and read some of his later, more "mature" post-60's novels; Wild Boys, Exterminator! (short stories) Cities of the Red Night, Western Lands, etc.
Those are the books where Burroughs' 'voice' comes through, and makes his earlier writings (NL, Nova Express) seem almost childish.

The postmodern novel, except without the lies.......2006-07-01
The concept of the postmodern novel is confusion between symbol and meaning, explained through self-aware metaphor; Burroughs takes this further and makes a radio show of many small skits associated invisibly (topically; philosophically) around the concept of modern breakdown. He borrows from every source, pulp, science fiction, psychological thrillers, literature (Melville!), and even advertisements in order to create this highly metaphorical book. Where James Joyce and Thomas Pynchon created highly styled postmodern books, they never came close to this degree of truth and understanding of the human condition -- and how it might be transcended. This is one of my favorite books of all time and I will never tire of reading it, although many of the acts in the book are things that make me alternately blush or hide in fear.
Useless.......2006-06-27
For any number of reasons I can probably say that this is one of the worst books I have ever read. I understand that a lot of people think this is genius. I am not one of them. Personally, I don't find endless descriptions of sex with minority boys to be very entertaining reading, let alone genius. I also don't find pointless prose that appears to have no discernable thread of thought to have much value. Personally, I like to read good story tellers, authors like Tom Robbins or Salman Rushdie. Naked Lunch is about as opposed to them as you can reasonably get.
This is one of those books that sounds a lot better when someone translates it for you. In reading the preface where Norman Mailer talks about it in the context of the court proceedings in the 1960s, the book sounds interesting and culturally pertinent. However, upon reading it the book falls far short of the lofty status we get from Mailer's answers on the stand. I understand how Alan Ginsberg, a proclaimed NAMBLA member, would find it's material suitable. I wonder about Mailer though. While I'll never take a stand against a person's writing what they want, I do take pause when someone recommends something like this.
This is not literature so much as a heroin clouded view of the author's own serious problems and his interpretation of our culture's deficiencies. The notion that this is the "naked" truth, or lunch as it is so called, is so absurd that the book should never have been accepted as remotely resembling cult literature, in the past, present, or future. Who reads this and resonates with it? Who thinks, "Yes, gay sex with boys is what my mind is all about? Oh, and all the better that they're Arabs!" Very few people, the author included. Burroughs himself admits this was difficult to write. This is probably due to the fact that the vignettes portrayed here do not, in fact, represent anything so much as the anarchy resplendent in the author's own mind while he struggled with various addictions. As a case study in heroin and morphine addiction, this may have some merit. As a counterculture commentary on society I find it worthless.
This isn't about my sensibilities being assaulted - far from it. If I can read & enjoy Robbins's linguistic forays into sex with nuns, I can handle just about anything. I'm not offended with flying sperm so much as I am insulted that anyone felt this was worth reading; that I was lured into thinking this was a work of art. It's not.
Sometimes I read books that don't suit me, but I understand why someone would like it. This book falls squarely in the camp where people feel they need to proclaim it genius because they're so confused or intimidated by it. This book is far from genius. The author admits it was put together from scraps of things written while he was in his heavy heroin addiction, and that he vaguely remembers much of it. I don't see how, or in what context, this book will appeal to anyone other than a case study of a certain segment of people at a certain instance in time in America.
