Book Description

A personal exploration of the conjunction between ancient Mesoamerican prophesy and New Age higher consciousness.

• Selected by the Independent Publisher's Book Awards as one of the top two New Age books of the year.

• Explores ancient prophesies and their relevance in the contemporary world.

The Incan and Mayan cultures saw themselves as "children of light"--descended from celestial realms--and their prophecies foretell a time of great spiritual awakening. They prophesied a time when the gateways to higher consciousness would open once again. That time is now.

Award-winning author Judith Bluestone Polich draws on her extensive research in quantum physics, archeoastronomy, holography, cosmology, and pioneering studies of human consciousness to show how science and contemporary thought are consistent with this ancient knowledge. As the ancients predicted, the human god-seed is beginning to awaken, and modern civilization is finally beginning to perceive human potential in ways that the ancient cultures accepted as truth. Polich introduces techniques for awakening our own human potential through dreaming, meditations, and the power of sacred sites.

I WANTED TO LIKE THIS BOOK...but it was rambling and very poorly edited. The people who want to convince others that these concepts are true are going to have to do better! Moments of interest... but, overall, disappointing.

I am still reading this book but it is well written. I just loved it and found myself taking notes as I read it which is something I never do. Well worth buying and reading.

5 out of 5 stars The best overview to Andean Mysticism.......2005-01-25

This is a great overview to Andean Mysticism. It covers a wide variety of sources into one well done collection. The author has done her homework and it shows. This books gives you a very strong impression of Incan and Mayan thought. Very well done.

For more advanced studies you can look into Shaman, Healer, Sage by Villoldo and Masters Of The Living Energy by Joan Parisi Wilcox.

3 out of 5 stars Just a little to new agey for my taste.......2002-01-24

The author believes that we are of a higher consciousness and order, she also believes that matter is light frozen in form. The author links the Biblical Elohim with ancient gods that are dedicated to help humanity evolve. ''Possible''. This is a short but interesting book on ancient knowledge. Worth a look at.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!.......2001-11-07

Hi. This book is required reading if you're considering a trip to Peru, Mexico, or are currently on your own mystical cosmic voyage. There are so many wonderful bits of information and it really helped me understand a lot about things that had happened in my life during and after trips to Peru, Greece, Mexico, and other power spots. If you're inquisitive and steadfastly "on the Path", then this should be in your hands. Five stars. To the author: Please write more books, Judith! Thank you for bringing forth this incredible book.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the Discovery.......2007-01-23

Thanks so much to the Fortunes for writing such a helpful book - so clear and full of useful information. After reading and re-discovering my Gift, I am in awe of how easy it is to see His Gifts in others. Thank You!!!

4 out of 5 stars Theologically accurate; Practically insightful; Fantastic for teaching; but Excessive in application.......2005-10-12

The best resource I've found for spiritual gift study so far.

The theological foundation is very sound, making good sense of the main passages on spiritual gifts in a way very few others do. Gifts are broken into 1) Manifestation (sign gifts - 1 Cor 12-14; Acts 2) 2) Ministry (equipping gifts - Eph 4) & 3) Motivational (every-Christian-gifts - Rom 12).

Written in a style anyone can use.

Inventories are great and surprisingly accurate for the limited number of questions used.

Warnings regarding misuse of spiritual gift impulses are very helpful (e.g. a "teaching" gift can incline a person to feel they are always right).

Application into the arena of employment is a bit excessive and beyond the scope of biblical applications for spiritual gifts. Better to do a Myers-Briggs or some other personality profile for that endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars My choice for spiritual gifts work with churches.......2005-05-29

As a church consultant, I am often asked to recommend spiritual gift surveys and resources for churches. In fact, we routinely ask staff members to fill out gift surveys as part of the consulting process. This book--and the corresponding survey available separately--are the tools I have chosen to use in my work.

I realize, of course, that there is no such thing as a perfect spiritual gifts survey. Since Scripture does not give precise definitions to many of the gifts, and there is much disagreement about the nature of specific gifts, the best any gift survey can do is measure whether a person has abilities corresponding to the author's understanding of a particular gift.

The reason I have chosen this survey is because it distinguishes between what the authors call the manifestation gifts (1 Cor. 12), the ministry gifts (Eph. 4), and the motivational gifts (Romans 12). The Fortune's survey measures only the motivational gifts. (I feel the title of "ministry" gifts for the Ephesians 4 gifts is unfortunate since that passage says that those 5 gifts are given to equip all believers for ministry. I prefer to call them "equipping gifts.")

I have found using this survey to be very helpful in our consulting work, especially in assessing church staff needs. The idea is that each of us is motivated to minister mostly through one or more of these seven gifts, and which of these motivates us largely determines how we respond to a given need.

I find it interesting that when Pentecostal/charismatic churches take the Natural Church Development survey (a widely used survey to assess church health), the most common Minimum Factor (low score area) is gift-oriented ministry. However, having consulting with charismatic churches, that result did not surprise me. Why? Because the primary gift emphasis in those churches is on the manifestation gifts (1 Cor. 12), and few of the people in those churches were aware of motivational gifts or drew on that awareness to discern what shape their ministry should take. I say this not to discount the manifestation gifts, but to point out that for the purpose of determining ongoing ministry roles, the motivational gifts are far more useful. That is why I believe as a practical matter, a survey that measures the seven motivational gifts is most helpful.

Like any other authors of spiritual gift surveys, the Fortunes make assumptions in defining these gifts. While their assumptions seem to me to be reasonable, they still remain their opinions, not the teaching of Scripture, and so their gift definitions (just as anyone else's) need to be held lightly. When this tool is approached as giving us useful language for talking about and identifying motivational gifts, and not as "the right way" to talk about them, I have found it to be valuable.

2 out of 5 stars Built on a flawed foundation.......2004-04-20

I applaud the Fortunes for doing a great job of encouraging people to discover and develop their spiritual gifts. Many of their tidbits and applications are very helpful and motivating. However, I have a problem with some of their foundational assumptions.

First, the idea that the "motivational" gifts of Romans 12 are of a different nature than the "manifestational" gifts of 1 Corinthians 12 is, in my opinion, not defensible. While Paul uses a variety of terms, the key word "charisma" is present in both passages. Also, the Fortune theory requires that the gift of "prophecy" in 1 Cor 12 be given a different definition than the gift of "prophecy" in Rom 12 even though the word is the same in both passages and there is no compelling contextual reason for two different definitions. Is it my personal suspicion, based on my study, that at the root of the "motivational vs manifestational" dichotomy is (in part) the desire to avoid dealing with the more "phenominal" gifts of 1 Cor 12 (tongues, miracles, etc.). Please note that I do not adhere to charismatic or pentecostal theology. However, I also don't find any Biblical warrent to exclude the 1 Cor 12 gifts from today's church.

Second, the practical result of this dichotomy is that the Fortunes must find a way for every believer to have not only a spiriutal gift, but specifically a Rom 12 gift ... significantly narrowing the field of variety of gifts.

Third, the Fortunes don't seem to distinguish clearly enough between spiritual gifts - gifts given by the Holy Spirit when He enters your life; and given specifically for the building up of the Church - and natural talents (God-given abilities that can be used in all facets of life). Yes, spiritual gifts and natural talents will often correspond closely, since ultimately they both come from our Creator God. However, the clear Biblical purpose of spiritual gifts is not to find a job you like, but to advance God's Kingdom. I admit that not all "God's work" happens within the walls and programs of the organized church, but to link spiritual gifts to finding a job is, in my opinion, weak theology.

There are some good nuggets in the Fortunes' book. Unfortunately, the flawed foundation points the reader in a less-than-ideal direction. A better basic perspective on spiritual gifts is C. Peter Wagner's little book "Discover Your Spiritual Gifts".

5 out of 5 stars Every one needs to read this book-- pick it up now!.......2000-09-21

Don & Katie Fortune's book, "Discovering Your God-Given Gifts" is a tremendous asset in the library of every spiritual seeker, server and leader.

There are a lot of "gift" books out there and as a teacher, I probably have all of them in our library. This one is great because it presents a clear case for how different lists of gifts serve their unique purpose in corporate worship and life. It is easy to understand and share with others-- you'll want to go through it together in your Bible study group.

All of us wonder from time to time where we fit in when it comes to ministry gifts and service. The Fortunes have hit it on the head when it comes to helping us identify our motivational gifts.

This book is especially useful for ministry teams, small groups and any setting where a variety of people have to relate or serve together. The very first benefit of reading it, is the insight you'll gain to seeing how each of us in our gifts are needed to work together in balance.

Of course, the thing you will love about this are the surveys included that help you determine your primary and secondary motivational gifting. I also recommend that you order directly from the Fortunes several of the supplemental tests that can be used with children, secular audiences etc.

You'll love it. I give it my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling.......2007-07-26

Since the book was written by a Vanderbilt, I dubiously expected a sanitized version and was delightfully surpised to find the author was brutally honest about the characters covered. This book was engrossing. I could not put it down. The portion about the Gloria Vanderbilt custody case was particularly engaging - what a piece of work the maternal grandmother was. But the book as a whole was a gem - I devoured every page and was sad to see it end.
I do agree with the previous reviewer who said a genealogical tree would have helped to refer to when reading about the characters and keeping track of how they were all related to each other, especially since the family was so fecund and so many of the men had similiar names. I think it also interesting the author does not mention precisely which branch of the family he is descended from. So perhaps he is trying to maintain some of his own identity. But all in all, this excellent read has whetted my desire to read more about the Vanderbilts, as well as other East Coast aristocratic families.

5 out of 5 stars Neo-Cons and Especially Cheney Should Take Heed of the Vanderbilt Past.......2007-07-08

A decided warning is given to present-day Neo-cons by Arthur T. Vanderbilt II in his book, FORTUNE'S CHILDREN. That warning, Don't Lose Your Soul for Money and Power, seems lost on the likes of Cheney, Bush, Libby, Rice and the military-oil-industrial complex that run the United States today.

FORTUNE'S CHILDREN depicts what happens when your heart is over-ruled by grasping greed and conspicuous consumption. The original Vanderbilt, the Commodore, mistreats his children and lives a money-grubbing life like Dickens' Scrooge, and uses nicknames to control his children (Sound familiar, quasi-President Bush?)

After the Commodore's death, most of the remaining Vanderbilts use their power and money to build huge pleasure palaces in Manhattan, Newport and in other posh spots, with their wives often dominating their husbands' lives, spending their money on foolish "high-society balls" and ignoring or micro-mis-managing their own children.

Forgetting that their own lives allowed them freedom, many of the Vanderbilt wives manipulate their children, fixing their marriages, allowing them little freedom of thought, and censoring their outside communication with the world. The domestically-weak Vanderbilt men hide away on pleasure ships, devote themselves only to business and often adopt a cold attitude toward their offspring that mimics the mean and cruel Commodore.

Dick Cheney, our real president, might see himself in these pages, as he runs a secret-happy administration, allows no-bid contracts on work in Iraq, leaks damaging information on his enemies and an innocent CIA agent, and stiffens his face into that horrible scowl.

Dick, you should know your power can't last. Why don't you take your health problems to heart and realize what Vanderbilt (and God) is telling you?

Dick, you can't take it with you.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book about fascinating people.......2007-07-05

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am passing it along to friends. Only one item confused me: the author refers to the daughter of William H. Vanderbilt as ELIZA Vanderbilt Webb. We have been to Shelburne Farms where they refer to her as LILA. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-01-14

Written by a Vanderbilt about the Vanderbilt family - truly interesting and hard to put down!

5 out of 5 stars Looking Inside the Gilded Age.......2006-08-28

"Fortune's Children" is a page turner - and an eye opener. Mr. Vanderbilt has done extensive research to document the lives and ambitions of this larger than life, very conflicted family. After visiting Biltmore, I wanted to know more about the family behind the fortune, and this is the book that lays it out - historically, intelligently, fascinatingly. I was only sorry when it ended.

Book Description

The Monroe house is going mad with excitement. Pete has just won a contest, and the prize is a school visit from none other than M. T. Graves, Pete's idol and the bestselling author of the FleshCrawlers series. He's even going to stay with the Monroes while he's visiting! Harold and Howie are thrilled, but Chester the cat is suspicious. Why does Graves dress all in black? Why doesn't the beady-eyed crow perched on his shoulder say anything? Why has a threatening flock of crows invaded the backyard? And most worrisome of all: In each of the FleshCrawlers books, why does something bad always happen to the pets? Suddenly, Graves's interest in all of the animals -- especially Bunnicula -- looks far from innocent. It's up to Chester, Harold, and Howie to find out if M. T. Graves and Edgar Allan Crow are really devising a plot to make their beloved bunny. . . NEVERMORE.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Victor Garber we miss you!.......2007-04-16

I agree enthusiastically with all the reviewers about this very enjoyable installment in the Bunnicula series.

The thing is, I have always gotten the audio books for my sons to listen to while going to bed at night. We have become addicted to Victor Garber's wonderfully expressive characterizations as the true voices of Howie, Chester and Harold. It's like our old friends don't sound like themselves. Patrick Mulvihill isn't bad but he just doesn't compare very well. His articulation isn't as crisp and the characters' voices are much more similar to each other compared to Mr. Garber's.

I wonder why they changed narrators? Oh, well, my sons still liked it. 5 stars for the story, 3 for the narration.

5 out of 5 stars A sensational conclusion to a series with bite!.......2007-02-03

The Monroe household is up in arms once more, but this time, much to Chester's chagrin, Bunnicula the vegetable juice-draining vampire bunny, is not to blame. In fact, none of the Monroe pets are to blame for this latest catastrophe. The blame rests solely on the shoulders of twelve-year-old Pete Monroe. When Pete enters a writing contest, and, oddly enough, actually wins it, he learns that his school will be receiving a surprise visit from one of the coolest authors on the planet - M.T. Graves. M.T. Graves is the author of the awesomely disgusting Fleshcrawlers books. And, while almost everyone thinks that M.T. Graves doesn't even exist, Pete is excited to have the chance to prove them all wrong. The reclusive author has never been seen before, and appears to dislike being around anyone other than his pet crow, Edgar. However, when he learns about Pete's strange pets - Harold, Chester, Bunnicula, and Howie - he opts to stay at the Monroe household for a few days, as opposed to checking into a hotel. Howie couldn't be happier to learn of M.T. Graves' arrival, considering he has read every one of his terrifying books. Chester, on the other hand, is suspicious. After all, the strange writer has made very special requests for his arrival: Bunnicula must sleep in his room, he wants unlimited access to salad - sans the dressing, etc. So when the mysterious man arrives at the front door, accompanied by the infamous Edgar Allan Crow, dressed entirely in black, and followed by a flock of crows who have taken up residence in the Monroe backyard, Chester's suspicions are proven right. There is something bizarre about this man, and he resolves to find out exactly what it is. Putting his reading - and sleuthing - skills to work, Chester begins to research the Fleshcrawlers books, and realizes that there is one common theme throughout them all: the pets always fall victim to some unusual fate. Suddenly, Chester knows exactly why M.T. Graves is so interested in all of the Monroe family pets, especially Bunnicula. He plans on using them for deranged science projects, and writing about them in his books. Harold, on the other hand, thinks Chester is barking - or, rather, meowing - up the wrong tree. But as more and more evidence is found, Harold begins to wonder if this is the first time Chester's suspicions will actually prove to be correct.

While I have only been reading the BUNNICULA books for the past month or so, I have quickly found myself sucked into their original storylines, and fabulous - if not slightly paranoid - characters. So when I learned that BUNNICULA MEETS EDGAR ALLAN CROW was, quite possibly, the last addition to the series, I knew that I had to pick it up immediately and learn what new adventures the Monroe pets had found themselves mixed up in. I can tell you now that this book does not disappoint. Howe has created an intricate, humble character in M.T. Graves. His likeness to the GOOSEBUMPS author R.L. Stine is interesting, and will most certainly appeal to readers who were obsessed with Stine's series in the past, or currently. M.T. Graves' somber personality, stuttering speech, and passion for black is interesting, yet his penchant for being alone makes the reader sympathize with him, and truly get a taste of the saying "beauty is only skin deep." As with previous BUNNICULA installments, Bunnicula is rarely featured within this tale, and, when he is, he is usually sleeping. However, readers will be delighted to have the opportunity to learn more about Pete and Toby Monroe, as well as some new human characters, from the school librarian, Ms. Pickles, to Pete's English teacher, and even the principal of Pete and Toby's school. Even with all of the human characters present throughout BUNNICULA MEETS EDGAR ALLAN CROW, the animals do not take a backseat in the storyline, and still dominate the mysterious tale, taking part in their usual activities: howling, bathing, eating chocolate, and, of course, sleuthing. While many series fall victim to the curse of bad sequels, Howe has managed to keep his BUNNICULA series soaring high, making each book better than the last. A sensational conclusion to a series with bite!

5 out of 5 stars A fun Read.......2007-01-08

This is the first Bunnicula book I have read... and it won't be the last. The author has a great style of writing. Even though it is a children's book you cannot tell where the story is going... which makes it unpredictable and great. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Both newcomers and old fans of the series will appreciate........2006-10-08

Peter has just won a contest: the prize is a school visit from his idol and the author of the FleshCrawlers series. While Peter's excited, Chester the cat is suspicious: Graves dresses in black, has a silent black crow about him at all times, and Chester knows that in each of Graves' popular books, something bad always happens to the pet... humor again blends with the supernatural in a Bunnicula story both newcomers and old fans of the series will appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars The Bun of Darkness is Back... .......2006-09-12

Its been twenty seven years since Bunnicula first hopped from the minds and pages of Deborah and James Howe's Bunnicula: A Rabbit- Tale of Mystery and into the popular lexicon. Merely mention the name Bunnicula to any thirty- something and you are bound to get a smile and a laugh as memories of Chester, Harold, Howie and the Bun of Darkness come flooding back. Finally, the rabbit with a V8 addiction is back; every bit as delightful as he was when he first appeared in 1979, and just in time for us to introduce him to our own children.

In the latest book, Pete Monroe has just won a writing contest, and his prize is his favorite author M.T. Graves, writer of the Fleshcrawler Series, coming to visit his school. M.T. Graves has some rather odd requests for his visit; he insists upon staying with the Monroe family, for one. Chester, the family cat, is suspicious of the writer's motives for the visit and, when he learns that something always happens to the pets in the Fleshcrawler books, he soon is seeing omens everywhere.

The voice of Harold, our faithful shaggy narrator, is just as humorous and engaging as he's always been while he guides us through the latest mystery under the Monroe's roof... what are the true motives of the mysterious horror writer M.T. Graves' visit to the Monroe household, and why his eerie fascination with Bunnicula? Why do bad things happen to the pets in his books? Could there be something unnatural afoot? Chester, the paranoid voice of supernatural conspiracy theories, seems to think so, and long- time fans of the Bunnicula series will delight in the feline's investigatory antics, and the inevitable chaos they cause. Howie, the wire- haired dachshund pup is also on- hand again to provide comic relief and to aid Chester in his investigations. All the characters still resonate as strongly on the pages as they did years ago, and, while the technology of the day has changed (as Chester utilizes computers in his evidence gathering) the spirit of the characters and the book remains the same; timeless. As Neil Gaiman says of Bunnicula, "Bunnicula is the kind of story that does not age, and in all probablility will never die. Or stay dead, anyway..."

Bunnicula himself remains as atonal in this book as he has in all those before it. The character of the rabbit himself still is only developed through the reactions of the other characters to him; we love Bunnicula through the eyes of Harold and his family. Bunnicula himself is still silent on all matters. He is the only main animal character that does not talk... or he was...

Meet Edgar Allan Crow, the seemingly eldrich companion of writer M.T. Graves. Chester believes him to be an ill omen, compounded by the large flock of crows that seems to take up residence on the Monroe property upon the arrival of the horror author. Chester waits on pins and needles for the crow to utter the word "Nevermore", at any moment, a' la Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", yet the crow is strangely silent. It seems he has somehow lost his voice. Still, as the title sugests, there is good reason to suspect that this crow knows more than he is letting on...

The rich, accessable characters of the Bunniculaverse would be nothing without the humorous, suspenseful type of story we all have come to associate with the series, and fans will not be disappointed. The plot takes its twists and turns with the ease of a coaster on its tracks before arriving at its decidedly non- supernatural, yet eventful, conclusion. As with all the books, having read the prior stories is not a prerequisite to enjoy and become engrossed in Bunnicula's world, as any prior information needed to understand the tale is included neatly and with ease of narrative flow in this story. Any new reader to the Bunniculaverse will have no problem finding their way through the story, and will wish to explore the world more fully once finished~!

Only one question remains unanswered at the end of the book... will there be another? The book at the end references the Tales of the House of Bunnicula books; stories which are told by Howie instead of Harold and in which Bunnicula never appears. Without giving details away, the reader is left wondering not when but IF another Bunnicula book will ever grace our shelves. This reader remains hopeful that the Bunnicula series will continue for many more years.

Book Description

“It does a man no good to be free until he learns how to live.”

These were the words of Amos Fortune, born the son of a king of the At-mun-shi tribe in Africa. When Amos was only fifteen years old, he was captured by slave traders and brought to Massachusetts, where he was sold at auction. Although his freedom had been taken, Amos never lost his dignity and courage. He dreamed of being free and of buying the freedom of his closest friends. By the time he was sixty years old, Amos Fortune began to see those dreams come true. Amos Fortune, Free Man is a Newbery Award winner that is based on a true story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent vocabulary resource!.......2007-07-27

I've used Amos Fortune Free Man as a powerful tool in building vocabulary and dictionary usage skills for my fifth graders. It is not an easy read, but does open young eyes to the way of life in colonial America. The book develops the character as they read, and I point that out to my students. Advanced readers told me that they thought it was boring at first but got better as they read. The concept that fiction and historical fiction books often develop in that way came through clearer by having them read the book than by my merely telling them. They learned not to give up on a book after reading just a few pages. I highly recommend it for gifted readers.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Freedom.......2007-03-19

Do you forget how vital freedom is in everyday life? Elizabeth Yates, the author of Amos Fortune: Free Man, informs her readers of how important freedom is. Atamun, the protagonist, was a representation for all of those Africans who struggled up the steep road, full of obstacles, to freedom. He stood for a large mistreated group of Africans who were deprived of their freedom and forced to work against their will.
The central theme of freedom began with the concept of slavery. Atamun, who represents all the Africans who were once free in their own continent, was a prince in Africa until he was captured. All along the perilous and excruciating voyage, Atamun wished for freedom. He wanted to be back in Africa. Africa was a place where he did not need to earn freedom. However, the pain of the voyage was a constant reminder that snickered, "You cannot escape without receiving more pain and suffering."
At last, the voyage ended and Atamun's trials had just begun. He refused to listen to the embarrassing words that echoed from the mouths of those who wished to force him deeper still into the pit of slavery. The Europeans tried to do so by selling Atamun to other Europeans so he would have to work for them. In addition, the Europeans who wanted to buy him insulted Atamun by laughing at his looks and inability to speak English. Atamun was finally bought by a Quaker. He was re-named Amos, but I have chosen to call him Atamun because Atamun was his original African name. The pain of being owned weakened Atamun physically and mentally. Like most slaves, Atamun was re-sold to someone else. Fortunately, he was freed quickly. The burden of being a slave was removed but was quickly replaced with new hardships.
Bigotry and injustice seeped into Atamun's life at different times like poison because his lack of liberty was due to his color. Once, Atamun needed land. He had earned enough money to free his own family. Now, he wanted to expand their lives by giving them land. There was plenty of land, which Atamun discovered in a spacious settlement. The constable of that settlement, however, stood against him. Thankfully, the constable finally agreed. Atamun was lent a large plot of land.
Having journeyed far in his life and gotten past two obstacles, Atamun was proud of himself. However, Atamun did not have the power to do certain things. Atamun reached other obstacles, such as want for land of his own and lack of business. Atamun received business once his reputation as a tanner grew, but Atamun's color caused limitations. At that time, Atamun was unable to sit anywhere other than the back pew at church or to be paid the proper amount of money. He, however, did raise enough money to buy his own plot of land. Atamun reached a final obstacle. What was he going to do about others who were kept down by slavery? Atamun decided to help others by funding the school for Africans in his settlement. Atamun had fulfilled the dream of the slave. Atamun was truly free in his heart, mind, and spirit!
Freedom is a blessing that makes everyone's life better, but most people do not consider its magnitude every day because they have liberty in abundance. Elizabeth Yates did an excellent job of informing you that freedom is essential for a peaceful life and how horrible life can be without it.

5 out of 5 stars What A Great Book To Read .......2006-11-30

Amos Fortune Free Man is one of the best books I have ever read. Amos Fortune is a biography,So he really lived. I personally love to read biographies whether it's sports or history. Amos was from an African tribe, but slave traders came over to Africa. Amos even though he lives in a different country is trying to save his people. This book can make you wonder why something happened or did not happen. This book was so good that I had to read it for an second time. All the biography lovers out there need to read this book. Also this book can get a little boring sometimes, but it's still a good book!If I get another chance to read this book I definitely will.

2 out of 5 stars More Boring Than I Thought.......2006-11-01

As with most other kids I thought this book was not worth writing. While reading the description it sounded fantasticly exciting. In the beginning it actually sounded like an interesting piece of history. By the end it was one of the most boring books I've ever read. Now I have come to realize that just because a book wins the Newbery Medal does not mean that it is a good book. With 1,000 good books one book can be published because it is pollitically correct or is spewed out by a good author. I have no doubts about Elizabeth Yates but I think that Amos Fortune is a book about a man that had a good life, but one that was not nessicarily worth writing about.

5 out of 5 stars Not so boring........2006-04-14

Quite contrary to other peoples opinions on this book I found it engaging rather than boring. The main character (Amos) is an example good of patience. It is well written and an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars It's a really Great book!.......2003-09-01

This is my favorite Arthur book. It is very funny & a creative idea. I first checked this book out from our school library. I liked it so much that I bought my own copy so I can read it again & again.

It is Prunella's 9-1/2 birthday. On her half birthday, everything was in halves. Her friends give her half of things for her birthday. Her older sister, Rubella, gives her a fortune telling Cootie-Catcher.

Every day everyone lines up in front of Prunella's house so they can ask the Cootie-Catcher a question since they can only ask one question a day. It is funny because everyone kept doing what the Cootie-Catcher said to do because they thought they would be cursed if they didn't do exactly what it said.

In the back of the book, it shows you how to make a Cootie-Catcher. This is a really great book!

5 out of 5 stars A can't miss Arthur book!.......2001-12-11

"Arthur and the Cootie-Catcher" is a book that I'm more than sure kids will love. It has an exciting storyline, and I like how Marc Brown was smart to put in the instructions. There were too amy good parts, so I can't say which part's my favorite. Either way, I highly recommend that everyone should read this.

Book Description

There is a skeleton on display in the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut. It has been in the town for over 200 years. Over time, the bones became the subject of stories and speculation in Waterbury. In 1996 a group of community-based volunteers, working in collaboration with the museum staff, discovered that the bones were those of a slave named Fortune who had been owned by a local doctor. After Fortune's death, the doctor dissected the body, rendered the bones, and assembled the skeleton. A great deal is still not known about Fortune, but it is known that he was baptized, was married, and had four children. He died at about the age of 60, sometime after 1797. Marilyn Nelson was commissioned by the Mattatuck Museum and received a grant from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts to write a poem in commemoration of Fortune's life. The Manumission Requiem is that poem. Detailed notes and archival materials provide contextual information to enhance the reader's appreciation of the poem.

5 out of 5 stars Seeking one's Fortune.......2005-07-10

There are as many ways of honoring the long forgotten as there are ways of mucking that honor up. I came to "Fortune's Bones" with just a bit of trepidation, I admit. Though I knew author Marilyn Nelson had created this book to honor a man long dead in the best way she knew how, I was still recovering from a similar, and foul, title called, "Journey To the Bottomless Pit" which also came out in 2004. In both books, a man who was a slave during his lifetime is honored with a children's book of fiction. In "Journey", the book was a simplistic version of a complicated man's life. I prayed that "Fortune's Bones" would not be the same. Those prayers were answered tenfold. Marilyn Nelson tells the story of Fortune in a manner respectful of his life, then accompanies this retelling with a requiem written in his honor. Though I would have enjoyed further factual information on the topic, this is a worthy addition to any poetry collection or non-fiction collection, for children, teens, or grown adults, anywhere.

There once was a man named Fortune. Born a slave in the 1700s, he and his wife and his children all belonged to a Dr. Preserved Porter. Later tests on Fortune's bones show that his life was not an easy one. His back was once broken and though he had a healthy skeleton, he died at the age of 60. When he did, Dr. Porter took Fortune's death as an opportunity to study human anatomy. He removed Fortune's skeleton, tapped the bones, and made himself a complete human skeleton. Every bone was carefully marked and studied by Porter and his ancestors. Years later, Fortune's name was lost and the skeleton was mislabeled "Larry" and given to the Matttatuck Museum. In the 1990s historians did research on it and found Fortune's true name once again. Now the only question that remains is what to do with Fortune's bones. Do we bury them and put him to rest at long last, or do we learn more from them about 1700s slaves and slavery? The question remains unanswered, but author Marilyn Nelson has done what she can. In this book she writes a requiem in Fortune's memory. Filled with free verse poetry, a Kyrie of the Bones, and a Sanctus at the end, "Fortune's Bones" is a text of respect.

One of the many things I loved about this book was the fact that as an author/poet, Nelson tells us why she wrote what she did. One poem is entitled, "Not My Bones", in which Fortune states clearly, "I am not my body", to anyone who cares to listen. This phrase comes from the Vietnamese Buddhist leader Thich Nhat Hahn, a fact that could well have gone uncredited by a less careful author. Each poem in this book is accompanied by factual information pertaining to Fortune's story, along with photographs, papers, tapestries, maps, and other important documents of the period. As a whole these poems speak beautifully together, forming a single Requiem. I especially liked "Dinah's Lament" in which Fortune's wife speaks of the cruel injustice of being forced to dust the bones that once would, "hold me when I cried; to dust where his soft lips were, and his chest what curved its warm against my back at night". Nelson, the accomplished voice behind her other great book, "Carver: A Life In Poems", is at her best here.

Admittedly, there were aspects of this book left unspoken that I (and I'm sure others) would have liked to have heard more about. The book is a Requiem and doesn't dwell on the fascinating process scientists took to discover Fortune again. There's a small series of three pictures on one page that shows three stages of facial reconstruction of Fortune, taken from his bones. That's something that would have made for a fascinating story in and of itself. Or how did the researchers and historians eventually discover who Fortune really was? Who did they talk to? What did they read? Sadly, such information will have to wait for another book. It's not answered here.

"Fortune's Bones", will obviously be snatched up by any child and/or teen assigned to read a book of poems since it's a mere 32 pages altogether. This is a great good thing. In spite of its scant length, this is a title that will teach a lot of information to a lot of kids in a wonderfully stirring way. The poems are mindful of the past and give the greatest of respect to a man of whom we know so little. A wonderful publication

5 out of 5 stars Fortune's remains the Mattatuck Museum.......2004-12-04

Fortune's skeleton is not on display. The exhibit about Fortune at the Mattatuck Museum includes a photographic illusion allowing visitors to see an image of Fortune's skeleton transform into a painting of Fortune as he may have looked in life. Fortune's actual bones have been carefully placed in archival museum storage, awaiting a community decision about whether to bury the remains or preserve them for future study.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Insight.......2007-03-21

I've found this book very helpful in determining my "gifts" as well as my seven year old son's "gifts." It describes him to a tee! It has been a wonderful tool especially in the area of schooling; it gives good insight into strengths and weaknesses, areas of interest, and why children may do certain things that don't always make sense to us as parents. It certainly gives me more patience when teaching my son as a homeschooler.

5 out of 5 stars Gain understanding of your children.......2000-10-13

I found this book a practical and easy to use help in discovering my children's natural giftings and personality traits. It helps explain why their personality "quirks" are really evidences of their own God-given gifts. It helped me better understand them and accept them. I feel I can help guide them better as I understand them better. I can Cooperate with God in helping them live up to their potential, rather than my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars get to know your children better.......2000-01-13

This book is a great resource for parents. I intend to give copies as baby gifts to new parents, it's just that helpful. With it you will begin to understand your child's strengths, their weaknesses, those "little things they do" that exasperate you. Sometimes, I've learned from this book, that annoying habit is a key to their bent, their greatest strength. It will help you direct their interests, know how to discipline them better, understand their friendships, and communicate with them better.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for parent to learn about who their children are!.......1999-02-13

Better than their first effort, and easier to understand, this book explains some of the reason children behave the way they do and how to "train them up in the way *they* should go". Two little quibbles--spanking is not an effective method of *discipline* (discipline's root is disciple--you *don't* hit your students--at least I hope not) and their insistence on putting homosexuality and masturbation on a list of sexual sins. But those are things that can be ignored, and the rest of the book is very well done.

1 out of 5 stars Up on Ebay after 10 miniutes.......2004-05-28

I concider myslef a very well-read Pagan. Over time, I have learned how to distinguish the fact from the author's imagination. And, I have to say, most of this book fell under the latter catogory.

It's so childish, and demening to Paganisam. The author did not even get her facts straight with regaurds to the origin of Goddess Religions. To me, it sounded like she was saying
" Oh, everything went fine and well while we belived in and worshipped the Earth Mother. Everything was about Women. But, then some evil jerks with their One True Man God came along and ruined it all. the end."
Really, the origins of the Earth Mother ("Gaia") are much harder to trace then she made it seem. In fact, most ( if not all) of the aincent people belived in Panthons ( Many Gods). The author also called Panthons something like Paetheons... Odd. Maybe I am just misinformed, but whatever.
It did have a few alright excrsises in the book to get closer to the Goddess, though.. Some of them where just downright perverted. " Get in frount of a mirror, take your clothes off, then with a friend or by yourself, get some body paint, and paint eachother."
    But, that's just my oppinion.
So, if you're looking for a misinformitive book, buy this.
If not, I reccomend looking at "Drawing Down the Moon" by Margret Alder to learn the true roots of modern Paganisam and Goddess worship.
    Bright Blessings,
    ~ LadyEowyn
