Clifford and his adventures are always very popular in my classroom. Some may argue that many of Clifford's adventures are a stretch, they are nonetheless captavating to a young audience. In this edition, Clifford after being introdcued to the role of firefighters and the importance of fire safety gets a chance to be a fire rescue dog is his own right. The book is a great seque into fire safety and prevention.

Book Description

The brand-new mystery series starring the brilliant, beloved, and slightly off-balance sleuth from the USA Network's hit show!

Monk's house is being fumigated, and he has nowhere to go. Fortunately, his assistant Natalie and her daughter are kind enough to welcome him into their home. Unfortunately, their home is not quite up to Monk's standards of cleanliness and order.

But while Monk attempts to arrange his surroundings just so, something else needs to be put straight. The death of a dog at the local firehouse-on the same night as a fatal house fire-has led Monk into a puzzling mystery. And much to his horror, he's going to have to dig through a lot of dirt to find the answer.

5 out of 5 stars quirky but interesting.......2007-07-31

Unlike many other reviewers, I don't watch the show, but after reading this book, I think I might like to try watching it. It seems like some reviewers complain because Natalie isn't the same in the book as on TV, but that didn't bother me at all, since I don't know her on TV. Monk is an unusual, and clever detective who finds clues that almost nobody else could spot. The book reads like a cozy, which is fine with me. There is very little hard drama to it. Mostly we just sit back and enjoy the personality of Monk as he gripes about germs wherever he goes.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-03-08

I'm a huge Monk fan. After getting through Seasons 1-4, which I got for Christmas, I was looking for more. I found the books, and thought why not give it a try. Mr. Monk and the Firehouse is an excellent read. Quick and easy, yet suspenseful, just like the show. The first few pages started out kind of "slow", and I was worried it wasn't going to be as good as the show, but once you get about 1/3rd into the book, it gets really good. The story is told by Natalie, which is hilarious. If you've seen the show, it's really easy to picture everything that is going on, it's almost like you're right there with them. Even if you haven't ever seen the show, the book is still worth a read. It's great!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Book!! .......2007-02-21

I love the series Monk and have always been a fan of Tony Shaloub, he is the funniest guy ever. Loved him as Antonio in Wings and equally so in Monk. This book had me laughing out loud, I kept seeing Mr. Shaloub through the book as I read, His mannerisms etc. There is mystery and humor throughout. This was actually the first one I read and I went right out to buy Mr. Monk and the Blue Flu and Mr. Monk goes to Hawaii. Can't wait to get to them.
Very entertaining and a change of pace, truly enjoyable! Hope Mr. Goldberg as more on the way, fun read.

5 out of 5 stars If you enjoy the show you'll enjoy this book!.......2007-01-29

The author does an excellent job of capturing the feel and characters in the television show! Monk's assistant, Natalie Teeger, narrates this episode, which begins with her daughter Julie requesting Adrian Monk's help in finding out who killed the fire department's dalmation that used to visit Julie's class at school. Of course, the case soon expands to include murder, which Monk is quick to include in his investigation. Everybody is exactly as they are in the TV show, which makes this book perfect for fans of this unusual, very entertaining, and often both highly amusing and warm crime drama! Don't mess with Monk!

4 out of 5 stars Like cozying up in front of the TV.......2007-01-10

Lee Goldberg's Mr. Monk Goes to the Firehouse is the first book in a series of mysteries based on the charming television show "Monk," which stars Tony Shaloub as the brilliant, obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk. Monk, a former policeman whose eccentricities cost him his badge, regularly consults with the San Francisco Police Department, helping his one-time partner Captain Leland Stottlemeyer solve ostensibly unsolvable homicides. Monk's genius for detail allows him to notice things other investigators overlook, and Monk pretty much always gets his man--the one exception being that Monk has been unable to solve the mystery of his own wife's murder.

Goldberg's novel, told from the perspective of Monk's assistant, Natalie Teeger, finds Monk investigating a series of related murders, beginning with the death-by-pickaxe of a firehouse dalmation. The quest for Sparky's killer leads Monk far outside his comfort zone--as far, in fact, as the city dump, where the germophobic detective dons a hazmat suit to dig for incriminating garbage. Monk has to wrestle his demons through the rest of the story, too, as he is forced to live in Natalie's house while his own comfortably sterile apartment is being fumigated.

Fans of "Monk," the series, will not be disappointed in Goldberg's addition to the franchise. The story's plot and the characterization of Monk strain credibility in a few spots, but on the whole the book is a great read. The mystery is engaging, but the best thing about Mr. Monk Goes to the Firehouse is the dialogue, which is sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. I don't know how the lines would come across to readers who have never seen the television series (though I can't imagine that a TV tie-in is likely to have a large audience among people unfamiliar with the show), but the dialogue struck me, at least, as vintage "Monk." Reading the book was an experience very much like cozying up in front of the TV for a good episode. I look forward to reading the second book in the series, also by Goldberg, Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii.

Book Description

Firefighters are famous for their food and it s no wonder since they cook their own meals seven days a week. All that practice, not to mention the peer pressure, makes for some of the best recipes in town, especially when that town is a culinary mecca like San Francisco. Firehouse Food introduces firehouse life, its brave denizens, and more than 100 of their best recipes. We meet greenhorns and veterans, retirees and local characters, all the while enjoying terrific meals designed to cook up easy and satisfy the whole crew. The recipes reflect the diversity of the San Francisco Fire Department personnel themselves-Latin-American, Asian, African, Italian, Irish, Eastern European-with a melting pot of delectable flavors. From barbecue by the experts to a Pineapple Upside Down Cake just like mom s, these dishes are forgiving enough for anyone to try, and generous enough for everyone to enjoy. With color photographs of meals, downtime, cookery in action, and of course the food itself, Firehouse Food illustrates the daily routine that turns a firehouse into a family.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SFFD husband uses this book.......2007-05-14

My husband is a SF firefighter and tells me that these recipes get made on a regular basis. My husband is a great cook and enjoys cooking for his fellow firefighters. He also knows that if it's not good he's going to hear about it. When he first started with the department he used this book a lot knowing that the recipes had been tested in the firehouses and became classics. The men and women of SFFD know how to cook and love really good food. If you want to get a sense of what they eat in a real big city firehouse you can't go wrong with this book!

5 out of 5 stars Hot Cook Book For Men!.......2007-05-07

Great hearty foods that have perfect seasoning and with fresh ingrediants. So many of the mens cookbooks are open a can of this and add a can of that. Not so with this one.
Yet, the recipes are easy for those of us who are not in familar territory in the kitchen. This is a collection of the best of the best. You will be your own best customer and you can expect to be treated to accolades and requests of repeat performances.

4 out of 5 stars Good Comfort Food Recipes.......2007-02-19

I think we can all agree that all firefighters are usually good cooks. My boyfriend who is a retired firefighter, asked me to buy this book for him because there is actually a picture of him in it. When it came, he was pleasantly surprised at how good the book was. I also spoke to another firefighter who said that he regretted not submitting a recipe and also thought the book and the recipes were very good.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding flavorful recipes........2007-01-04

My wife got me this for Christmas (Thank you!). She said that just reading it made her mouth water.

This book has recipes from firehouses in San Francisco. If you see this book anywhere, just look through it. That should be enough to want to buy it.

Book Description

Firefighting is a world of absolutes: evil is a red devil that wants destruction and death, good is a charged hose line, full of water to fight the flames. The best and boldest firefighters in the country, the men of Rescue 2 are hand-picked to fight not just the biggest blazes but any other emergency New York can throw at them. The sheer adrenaline of the job is perfectly captured in the dramatic story of their firehouse, a model for others nationwide-dubbed 'the cuisinart' because it slices up new recruits. The story begins in the late 1990s as Phil Ruvolo takes command from Captain Ray Downey, a legendary FDNY leader. Ruvolo inherits a stubborn group of vets, still loyal to Downey. He also steps into a firehouse mourning the recent loss of a brother-Rescue 2's first fatality since the 1950s. Ruvolo not only faces the challenge of transforming the house into his Rescue 2, he must also keep the men united and, later, bolster their spirits through 9/11 and beyond. Tom Downey takes us into the fireman's world: the smell of their coats after a good fire, the hardened eyes of a veteran after a fellow fireman's death, the humor and camaraderie. His firemen are not cardboard heroes; they're a group of gritty, larger-than-life personalities brought together by dedication and a mission to save lives. Rescue 2 doesn't leave a fire until everybody's safe. They're the last men out. Theirs is an inspiring story destined to become a classic.

the most moving book I have ever read.It takes the good with the bad. No sugar coating, all honesty.

4 out of 5 stars A good way to scratch the surface..........2007-03-29

I should know: I'm a firemen's daughter. In fact, I'm a Rescue 2 firemen's daughter (we're a special breed) and have spent my entire life in the wacky world of Rescue firemen. Although it's really hard to capture the type of insanity and devotion these guys have for their jobs - Tom does a really good job. If someone you love is a fireman: read this book. It'll help you understand them better. Hey, even if you don't know anyone whose a firemen you should read this book. I just have 1 bone to pick with you Mr. Downey: Captain Ruvolo's daughters are not what I would call "pampered" (p.62). He loves them and they love him just as much.

5 out of 5 stars great book .......2006-03-25

Amazing stories in this book. You get the feel of the life of a member of the famed FDNY RESCUE 2. It is the kind of book that you read one chapter, and say..."Just one more chapter and I will put it down." But you cant put it down. After I finished the book, I said "I wish there could be more stories." Highly recomend this book to anyone interested in the life of those crazy enough to run in where the rest of the world runs out!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-08-20

A very good documenary about Res2cue. It really captures the lifesyle of firefighters and how they enteract with one another in good and bad times.

It further discribes the hours of vigorous training and education needed to perform rescue work in NY city, from a child impaled on a wrought iron fence to rescuing one of their own from a collapsed building, to the 9-11 collapse of the Twin Towers.

An excellant book for fire service leaders and those who wish to be.

5 out of 5 stars So glad to be an American!.......2005-07-29

What a fantastic book! It gives you just a glimpse of some of the former and present day men of Rescue 2. It's a look into the daily life of a firefighter while also getting to know the personalities of these brave men. I didn't want to put the book down. I laughed and cried throughout the book. I'll always have a high respect for firefighters. This book just reinforced my conviction. Well done Tom Downey!

5 out of 5 stars Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust.......2007-02-02

Molly O'Neill's New York Cookbook is a celebration of the New York Food world. She is the food columnist for The New York Times Magazine and spent five years working on this amazing book. The first recipe I tried was "Katie's Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust." The ingredients looked delicious with cinnamon and chocolate wafers for the crust and a rum and coffee flavored filling. I made it for Easter and everyone was very impressed.

Since the author is a food columnist I knew she would be selecting winning recipes and so I felt confident enough to make the recipe for a big occasion without even trying it out at least one time for myself. I was very pleased with the results and can recommend the recipe to you for any occasion.

Whether you are interested in trying lots of new recipes or you just enjoy reading cookbooks, the New York Cookbook has so much to offer. Page after page of delicious information mingle with the even more delicious recipes. Some of the fun recipes include:

New York Penicillin - a chicken soup made by Aunt Marie Stacey. This stock/soup is then used in a variety of recipes and is very easy to make.

Irish Soda Bread - Make two loaves of bread in no time at all.

Simple Fresh Tomato Sauce - The perfect sauce for pasta made with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, oregano and a little brown sugar.

Shrimp Fried Rice
Shish Kebabs
Meat Loaf
Rosemary Chicken
Chicken Paprikas
Pan-Fried Sole
Yoko's Japanese Salad Dressing
Marrakesh Carrots

Some of the sweet treats include: "Coney Island Fudge" made with cream and semisweet chocolate, "Zoe Morsette's Oatmeal Macaroons," "Aunt Olga's Cardamom Cake," and "Katharine Hepburn's Brownies." If you love ice cream, you may want to try out the recipe for Hot Fudge Sauce and Butterscotch Sauce.

A few of the highlights in this book include:

Food Walks - Wander through food markets
A Few Essential Ingredients in Italian Cooking
Manhattan Clam Chowder
In Search of New York Steak
A Trip Down Menu Lane
Festivals

The New York Cookbook is an extremely well-researched feast that will satisfy the cerebral appetite as well as please your family and friends when you try out the delicious recipes. These recipes have been created by some of the best cooks in New York and you can use them with confidence, knowing you are making something wonderful for dinner or dessert. This cookbook was a wonderful gift from a friend who loves visiting New York and I already have plans to buy copies for friends and relatives. This is a highly collectible cookbook with recipes you will look forward to making year after year.

5 out of 5 stars A Nifty New York Cookbook.......2006-11-10

As a native New Yorker, I consider this a classic ... wonderful anecdotes and recipes from a vast array of people who live in the city. Molly's affection for the city is evident (her brother, Paul, played for the Yankees), and her knowledge of both food and the city makes this cookbook a gem.

5 out of 5 stars New York Cookbook: From Pelham Bay to Park Avenue, Firehouses to Four-Star Restaurants.......2005-08-02

Cooks Magazine recommended this cookbook as being very authentic. I bought it because of their review. They were absolutely right. The recipes are original/authentic New York complete with history and original photos. It's a great read even if you never make any of the recipes.
I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good but some recipes are hit or miss.......2005-04-19

This book has the best spaghetti sauce recipe --my husband and I loved it--it was a way to bring NY cooking to Hawaii since there are not many good italian restaurants out here like in NY, which I miss. On the downside, not all recipes were good. For ex, I did not like the Madison Square burgers nor did I like the Pad Thai noodles (I tried recipes from Keo or Cooking light for Pad Thai which were better). I will try some more recipes from this book and hopefully will have better luck.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to NYC restaurants, and shopping.......2005-02-03

New York Cookbook is a witty, chatty book capturing the essense of New York City through it's unique food culture. There are over 400 delicious recipes from eateries famous, and not so well-known; plus mini-shopping guides to various New York neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge, Chinatown, Flushing, Greenpoint, Arthur Avenue, Hell's Kitchen, and Jackson Heights. Note, the book was published in 1992, and some of the shops mentioned in the book have either moved, or have gone out of business. nevertheles, this book is a great resource. rkchin. http://www.nychinatown.org

4 out of 5 stars Good blend of family drama, humor, and suspense........2007-08-05

Firehouse Dog won't go down as one of the greatest family stories in history (like A Dog Of Flanders or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (P.S.)), but is a good solid story for adolescents, about 12-year-old Shane, who's father is the Captain of the firehouse housing Fire Engine 55. The Captain is a widower who succeeded his own late brother to the job, leaving Shane with very little parental supervision. While ditching school Shane runs into Rexxx, a lost Hollywood movie dog. Shane is caught due to the dog jumping on him, and resents the dog for a while. Rexxx was lost wearing a prop collar so they think his name is Dewey, and can't find the owner; but while trying Shane learns how good Dewey is at tricks and gradually decides he wants to adopt him. So you have a typical dog story situation, the dogs presence helping build the boys character while you wonder if the boy will have to lose the dog if the Hollywood owner ever turns up. But wait there's more: meanwhile Shane learns his father is investigating a series of fires that might be arson -- including the one in which his uncle died. So the plot builds up to a more serious situation with suspense, firefighting action, and a dramatic conclusion. Fortunately this is developed gradually from the more humorous first half of the book, so it works on both levels, and never gets too scary for kids, but never gets dull, with some firefighting action, humor, and a moderately poignant story to hold it all together. Based on the movie starring Josh Hutcherson, who proved his diverse acting skills starring in films ranging from Little Manhattan to Bridge to Terabithia.

5 out of 5 stars An upbeat, educational book.......2000-02-28

This is an excellent book with elements that will grab a child's interest--a loving dog and a fireman's life. The story is told using photos of actual activities at a fire station and the Dalmatian they keep as a pet. The photos give a vivid account of a fireman's lifestyle. It first explains the equipment they use then it shows some of their activities when not at a fire. I particularly liked the sequence beginning with the firemen sitting down at a table ready to enjoy dinner. They're relaxed and chatting away in idle conversation when the firebell rings. In the next photo you see them rushing away from the table with stern looks, all business. The following photo shows them sliding down the pole and diving into their gear. Then they're racing away to the fire. Threaded throughout the story is the lovingly treated dalmatian who also has his responsibilities at the station. The book is interesting, educational, action-oriented, and real.

Not too helpful, meals seam pricey and when your runnin calls it can be hard to let something cook for hours and hours like some of the recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to use.......2007-01-22

Book was a gift for my 16 yr. old son.
Interesting ideas, easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars A fun book, with lots of great recipes.......2001-11-23

This wonderful cookbook has 150 recipes drawn from firehouses from all 50 states. It has everything from main courses, to side dishes, to desserts. My one complaint against this book is that is it organized by area, rather than course, but that's a very small complaint. In between, there are chapters on firefighting in America, firehouse cooks, and systems of cooking in firehouses.

Overall I thought that this was a fun book, with lots of great recipes. I really liked the Chicken and Dumplings from page 110 (of the 2001 hardbound edition), and the Coffee Cake from page 77. I highly recommend this wonderful cookbook!

5 out of 5 stars 150 Mouthwatering Recipes from All 50 States.......2001-09-06

This is "no frills" cooking at its best! If you're looking for regional, family recipes that are easy to prepare without compromising taste, this book is for you. All of the recipes were tested in the Better Homes & Gardens kitchen, and Kite cleverly gives us ingredient amounts for family-size or "firehouse" portions--no calculations needed while your hands are coated in flour. Recipes range from regional dishes like jambalya, enchiladas, chowder and spaghetti to meat loaf, banana pudding and one of my favorites, "Potato Dish from Truck Co. No. 2." This is not just a cookbook. As wife of a veteran fire training officer and firehouse chef, Kite weaves throughout, a brief history, quips and tales of firefighting and dedicates the book "to the honorable members of our society who keep watch over our lives and property every hour of every day--the firefighters."

Thirteen men from Engine 40, Ladder 35 firehouse initially responded to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; only one survived. Located near Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the firehouse was known for its rich tradition and strong leadership. This gripping book details the actions of the 13 men on that horrific day and the heartbreaking aftermath--the search for the bodies, the efforts of their families to deal with overwhelming grief, and the guilt and conflicting emotions of the surviving members of the firehouse. The book is also about the men themselves and the tight bond and sense of duty and honor that held them together. David Halberstam does a masterful job of illustrating the inner workings of a firehouse, with its traditions, routines, and complex social structure that in many ways resembles a "vast extended second family--rich, warm, joyous, and supportive, but on occasion quite edgy as well, with all the inevitable tensions brought on by so many forceful men living so closely together over so long a period of time." He also explains why so many men choose this life despite the high risk, relatively low pay, and physical and emotional demands of the job.

Halberstam and his family live three and a half blocks from Engine 40, Ladder 35, and he writes of these 13 men in such a loving and precise way that he could be describing members of his own clan. Deeply felt and emotional, Firehouse is a tribute to these decent, honorable, and heroic men and a celebration of their selflessness not only as firefighters but also as husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and friends. --Shawn Carkonen

5 out of 5 stars Halberstam & The Heroes of 9/11.......2007-08-30

I don't think you will find any book in which both the author and his subjects are so evenly matched regarding the high quality of work they have put out over the years. Sadly, the firefighters met their match on that sad day where it was their job to run into the direction of tragedy while everyone justifiably were going in the opposite path. Great stories reflect the quality of these individuals and their desire to help others under the worse circumstances.

The other tragedy related to this fine piece is the premature death of the author a few months back in a car accident. If you have never read a book by David Halberstam, please do so. I have read many different books by him on various subjects. He is one of the few people who can write on a subject that I would seemingly have little interest and make it a highly entertaining event just through sheer style and talent. He will be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A simple but effective look at firemen and their bravery.......2007-07-24

Halberstam's lean prose is the appropriate style for this moving portrait of the men at Engine 40, Ladder 35, 12 of whom were killed in the line of duty on 9/11. Each man gets his moment; the portraits are evenhanded, the men shown as human beings rather than super heroes. The events leading up to their final call are incredibly emotional rollercoaster; the day of the disaster is recalled with a devastating clarity. As an examination of the courage of ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances, only its brevity keeps this from being a true masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars A thank you from David Halberstam to his neighbors.......2007-05-02

If you are looking for an all encompassing book that looks at the FDNY role on September 11th and the aftermath - this is not that book. (Try "Report from Ground Zero" by Dennis Smith.) If you are looking for a book that looks at 9/11 with a broad view of the significance of that day on several levels, this is not that book. (Try the 9/11 Commission Report.)

What this book represents is small tribute - a thank you, if you will - to the men who lived in David Halberstam's neighborhood, if only in 12 hour shifts. In a narrow sense, it looks at one particular firehouse and the culture of that house. You are given a glimpse of each man and how they were viewed by their "brothers" on the job and in some cases, why it is that they found the FDNY to be their calling. Think of it as a series of extended obituaries not just for each of the twelve men who died, but also for the loss of what had been the culture fostered by all the men stationed in that house.

By portraying each of these twelve men, in a broader sense I think Halberstam is offering up a glimpse of each of the 343 men who died. Each house that lost a member - and numerous houses lost multiple members - likely had someone who filled the "Sergeant Major" roles that Bruce Gary and Jimmy Giberson had within 40/35. I suspect most houses had a funny guy, or a quiet guy, or a guy who didn't easily fit the fireman stereotype. I knew several firemen who died that day (either directly or through my brother who is on the job) and I can see character traits of those I knew in the men profiled in this book.

The quality of Halberstam's writing is well known and doesn't need commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Firehouse is a winner.......2007-01-10

Firehouse allows the reader to experience the events and consequences of 9-11 for the firemen and families involved. It is a personal account of the crashes but does not get maudlin in its descriptions. By the time you finish the book, you feel that you know the firemen and their families intimately. It leaves you with the greatest respect and gratitude for these brave men and their families.

3 out of 5 stars Firehouse Review.......2007-01-08

While I enjoyed reading the book at the time I must admit it left no real lasting impression on me.

As a firefighter myself I appreciated the way the microcosm of firehouse life was explained and could identify with the NYFD personnel.

Just didn't feel like I had a greater insight to the calamity that befell the NYFD and this firehouse after reading this book than I did before.

A book called "Red Watch" about the London Fire Brigade which is also about the loss of firefighters I found had much more depth to it.
