Customer Reviews:
Biographies .......2007-10-16
Inspirational book regarding an afro-americana male that overcame terrific odds and became a world famous neurosurgeon and who gives credit to God for his abilities and mother's upbringing for him and his brother in becoming an engineer.
It would be great it his book could be translate to Spanish an other languages which would reach other children an adults.
This is an amazing book........2007-08-25
I was assigned this book for my high school reading list and i thought it would be incredibly boring.I was really surprised by the mix of medical terms and personal circumstances. This is probably the best book I have ever read.
Inspiration.......2007-07-24
I enjoyed this book very much. I am a pre-med student, and I think all pre-med student get discouraged at one point because of all the hard work. Before I read this book, I was nervous about my upcoming semester with the work load. Reading about Dr. Carson's story gave me the extra push I needed to take on the next semester with a little more needed ambition.
The Stuff Heroes Are Made Of........2007-07-13
When you think of a hero, what comes to mind? Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie? Rocky, perhaps? After reading Gifted Hands, there was no doubt in my mind that Ben Carson is a hero.
The most amazing thing is, that upon reading this book, you will realize that he does not regard himself as such. He humbly acknowledges that he is a child of God and that he is out to put out his best efforts in this world. Ben is a gentle giant - he is a highly capable individual with the ability to save lives - and although he is a person that merits much respect, he acknowledges the value of every human as just that: a human. In other words, he considers himself an equal with someone who, for example, sells cotton candy on the beach for a living.
I rated the books five stars because it is so inspirational. Through his well told story- that of a economically handicapped youth in a segregated society who becomes one of the world's best neurosurgeons - he shows us that there are no excuses in life. We all have obstacles - some small, some mammoth - but we can all pull strength from ourselves and God to make something great of ourselves. His faith and virtues have taken quite far in his life - and it has been accomplished by giving his best efforts each day.
Highly recommended reading for everyone - especially anyone facing hard times that make them feel like they cannot be their best - the book engagingly gives us very practical advice.
Inspirational Pioneer.......2007-07-03
If you're looking for an inspirational, I-can-do-it-too book for high school students, this is the one. Having gone from ghetto child to pediatric neurologist, Carson not only recounts his own journey but offers advice to young people as well as their parents. The life and death stories are page turners.

Customer Reviews:
A truly educational piece of literature!.......2004-03-14
This is my first Ben Carson book, and I can hardly finish without constantly stopping to tell someone about this amazing book! I had the brief opportunity to meet this author in February of this year, and I was amamzed then, but after starting the book I hardly know what to say. Dr. Carson has angel's wings! He is a special anointed vessel sent by God! He demonstrates through The Big Picture the ability to relate to all levels of society. He understands the pangs of the least and the priviledge of the greatest. He graciously becomes transparent and reveals of himself for the benefit of the reader. His pearls of wisdom and sound advise yield a real education when reading his book. Everyone needs to read The Big Picture and to apply its principles. I appreciate him sharing in such a meaningful way!
Compelling read.......2003-12-21
This book should be a MUST READ for every parent and teacher as Dr Carson shares from his own experiences how he was motivated as a poor student to become a well known and respected pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital. With fascinating stories from his personal and professional life, Dr Carson weaves his wisdom with great suggestions for the racial, education and health care ills that plague our society today. It is a book you can't put down once you start reading it.
Some Good, Some Not-So-Good.......2001-07-30
The first two parts of this book were inspiring. Dr. Carson started out by illustrating the "Big Picture" with stories from his work. In the second part he went on to talk about the importance of things like parenting, setting goals, etc. I found the last part not at all interesting. In it Dr. Carson talked about his ideas on how to overcome different social issues. This portion was atypical of his normal writing style and I found it neither captivating nor especially thought provoking.
Superb, thought-provoking work.......2001-06-25
Dr. Ben Carson is not just a gifted surgeon. He is a healer who thinks about the spiritual dimensions of human life as well as the physical ones. In this book, he distills his experiences into a compendium of anecdotes, thoughts, and guidelines which spell out "The Big Picture" of human existence. Carson is not afraid to take controversial positions based on his deep Christian beliefs. Even readers who disagree with him, though, will find themsleves pondering Carson's thoughts. Simply put, this is a book that will touch every reader.
Learning From the Simple Things of Life.......2000-03-08
The Big Picture gives one the message, do not overlook the simple things of life, the example of the railway track and the stone, shows that, any action done well, and well explored, can lead to greater things and opportunities of life. Dr. Carson does go into great details of his life's experiences. By the details, I can see similarities between his and mine. In fact, by practicing those household principles his mother taught him, I have been successful in raising two boys to be responsible men. He shows that anyone can live life to its fullest. As Jesus said "He came to give the abundant life." When one lives by Godly principles, success is available to all. Dr Carson gives honor and glory to the best in his life, i.e. honor to his mother, and he gives glory to God. The Big Picture demonstrates that if one man could touch the world with his God given talents, we could all strive to empower others with the same enthusiasm. Everyone can be the victor, and not a victim regardless of one's beginnings. Ben. Carson demonstrates that though we have no choice in our birth condition, and challenges, whether a challenge is of physical, economic, educational or racial origin, we can all contribute to improving our lot in life, and the lot of others globally, by using our brain to educate ourselves, and others, such as our children. The choices we make will in some way impact the world. As consumers of health care, we as individuals have the last say as to whom we wish to provide care,we need to walk the extra mile , and be proactive in achieving compassionate action, for our families and for our community.

Excellent Account of Ben Carson.......2007-03-19
We borrowed this book from the library for a report my son needed to do for school. It's such an inspirational story and an easy read for children that am purchasing this book for our home library.
Ben Carson Biography.......2005-10-17
I work at a shelter for homeless families. We have chosen this book as an encouraging, inspirational book for our youth, and it has been very successful in getting and keeping their attention.
He Brought Another Into Medicine for the Future.......2003-12-13
My daughter read "Gifted Hands" 3 years ago.
She has become a 4.0 GPA student. She is studying so hard that her teacher's asked us what was driving her? We told them that she read a book and just took it to heart. She is totally taken with becoming a Pediatric Neurosurgeon.
All our daughter talks about is (when) she becomes a Dr. and helps the children she will be fullfilled in what her life is meant to be on this earth.
It is quite something since we adopted her out of a ghetto type
environment 4 years ago. She had only been in school 46 days in her entire life of 9 years of age. We burned the midnight oil with her and she blossomed. "A mind and a child are a terrible thing to waste". Thank God that we got her and she is on her way.
Thank you , Dr. Carson, you have done a great thing and continue to be a great motivator to those who will listen.

Solid Stuff........2007-07-13
Inspired by Gifted Hands, I wanted to learn more of Dr. Carson's insights.
Think Big, a book that can be read by novice readers, offers very practical advice and insights that can help anyone be their best. The title is an acrostic for the things that Ben Carson considers essential for success. He defines success as, essentially, knowing you have done your best.
I gave the book four stars because I felt Gifted Hands was much more engaging in giving the same advice - I find Gifted Hands more intriguing because you follow his growth as he realizes and implements the things that turn around his life. However, this book is still highly positive and worth a read - it is highly practical, inspiring, and spells out the advice very plainly for us all to readily apply in our own lives!
Great Book.......2007-03-08
I work with kids and I am reading this book with one of the teens and he is also enjoying the book. It is easy to read and it has a great message.

Ben Carson - my hero.......2005-10-06
as a 7th or 8th grader, i checked this book out from my school library...it must have been around 1995...I had to write a book report about it....I always loved the book because it taught me never to give up..For some reason after that, i always remembered Ben Carson..Anytime, someone said, "who is Ben Carson?", i knew...Now, years later, after graduating from college, I continue to hear Ben Carson acheiving even more..he is my hero!
Hope, determination and god's blessings.......2002-11-05
I read this book in which I had briefly heard the story of Dr. Ben Carson and was amazed at all of his accomplishments. This book was very inspiring and should be recommended reading for all youths and even adults to show them that their dreams can come true. Dr. Carson's story has really helped to inspire me for when times start getting tough that I should look to god for guidance.
The best book.......2001-10-26
I really liked this book. It is a real story of Ben Carson. When he was young other children called him dummy. He always wanted to be a doctor. Sometimes he thought that it could never happen but his mom would cheer him up. I think it's a great influence to kids. You should read this great book. Jk
Excellent book for classrooms.......2001-07-28
I have added this book to my classroom library for 5th graders. They enjoy reading books about diverse people. Ben Carson is our classroom hero!
A surgeon with a inspirational story of success.......2001-01-12
I read this book recently and it is a interestng and inspiring account of Benjamin Carson.
An excellent book to give to a child or teenager who needs that "boost".
Carson, literally went from being among the worst students in his elementary school class to a Yale University graduate and University of Michigan medical school graduate.
Very well done.
Book Description
Some of the most significant figures in evangelical theology explore the traditional view of the doctrine of salvation and its impact on evangelism in this age. Beginning with the doctrine of God as the author of salvation, pressing issues such as the exclusivity of the gospel and modern evangelism strategies, are examined. It's a forceful, clear presentation of how to stay true to biblical doctrines and faithful to the Great Commission in postmodern times.
Customer Reviews:
Evangelicals Who Believe In Calvinism!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-08-26
Given the present theological dynamics surrounding queries into the nature of God and human destiny, it saddens me to encounter Christian thinkers who are determined (no pun intended)to retreat into the fetid bowels of a tired, stale Reformed Weltanschauung instead of bravely engaging the challenges presented to dogmatics and hermeneutics as we approach the new century. What is lacking in these essays is the belief in a personal deity who can transcend our expectations (cf. Deut. 23 and Isaiah 56) - even our expectations regarding the extent of God's saving activity - and whose mercy can defeat our most entrenched theological prognostications! Viva la grace!
Evangelicals Who Believe in God!.......2000-01-23
Edited by a long-respected OT theologian and a rising-star young theologian, this volume is a welcome tool for pastors and laypersons perplexed by the growing horde of "evangelicals" seeking to redefine the doctrines of God and salvation. The contributors (Carl Henry, R. Albert Mohler, D. A. Carson, et al) are unabashed in their commitment to a biblically-robust classical evangelical theology. Thornbury's concluding article contributes much to this discussion by joining his critique of "post-conservative" evangelicalism with a self-critical analysis of the theological reductionism found in some sectors of traditionalist evangelicalism. The shelf of every evangelical pastor and church leader should make room for this volume.
