Book Description

Run run run.

That's what twelve-year-old Annie loves to do. When she's barefoot and running, she can hear her heart beating . . . thump-THUMP, thump-THUMP. It's a rhythm that makes sense in a year when everything's shifting: Her mother is pregnant, her grandfather is forgetful, and her best friend, Max, is always moody. Everything changes over time, just like the apple Annie's been assigned to draw. But as she watches and listens, Annie begins to understand the many rhythms of life, and how she fits within them.

This fantastic book starts off with a girl named Annie running, running, running. This book is called Heartbeat, written by Sharon Creech. Heartbeat is a quick, short, easy to read realistic book formed into a really long poem.

Heartbeat takes place in a small town with a girl named Annie as the main character. Annie loves to run, but she really loves to run barefoot. Then one day, her mother was ill and Annie thought that she may die. Fortunately her mother was actually going to have a baby! Annie kept on thinking of what the baby would look like and if it would be a normal baby or not.

This book is great, and I really think you should read it because it's short and really easy to read, plus it is a Rebecca Caudill Award nominee. I was able to read this book in a day or two because it was such a great book. I really got into it!

Now there is a boy named Max and a girl named Annie they're best friends. They love running bare foot, especially by Mrs. Cobber's red barn. They also love to run in the trees and over the creeks by the red barn. Annie's mom was having a baby pretty soon. They would call it the alien baby because it would always be kicking. One day when Annie had to go to school she had art. Her teacher told them that they had to draw one apple for 100 days. So then when she got home she stared drawing one whole apple. Then the next day her grandpa took one bite from apple she was drawing yesterday it gave her a new idea. So the next 99 days she drew the apple with another bite in it. Then Max one day got asked if he could join the boys running team. He said yes but the coach said you needed running shoes. But for pratice he didn't have to wear shoe's. One day Max came over to my house and grandpa gave him something It was running shoe's. Then the next day it was the big race!
Annie went to watch Max run then at the very end of the race Mrs. Cobber came And said to Annie your mom is having the baby. So she had to leave the race but she saw that Max didn't win. But her mom did have a baby it wasn't a alien, it was a boy! Then everyone was happy. She went back to school on the hundredth day with her hundred apples. The very last one in the folder Was just a stem. Now that you know smoething about this book you can go read it!

In this poetic novel by acclaimed author Sharon Creech, Annie, a twelve-year-old girl, is trying to find out who she is. A lot happens in this short one-hundred-and-eighty-page book.

Annie's mother is pregnant, her grandfather is beginning to forget things, and her friend Max is extremely moody. Annie loves to run, and throughout the book there are "thump, thump, thump" lines where she can hear her heart beat in rhythm with her feet, which are running hard. Hence the title of the book.

In Annie's art class, the students are asked to take an apple and draw a picture of it for one hundred days. At the end of the project the students are to turn in one hundred drawings. There are poems in the book devoted to the one apple.

I love Ms. Creech's writing and admire her poetic style. The characters come alive as if you knew each one of them personally. I love reading books like that; they seem so real. HEARBEAT is a simple, fun, fast read.

Heartbeat
Book Written By: Sharon Creech

Run, run, run. That's what Annie, a kind free-thinking twelve-year-old girl, loves to do. Her friend Max, a competitive and moody thirteen-year-old boy, is now giving her a hard time until the point that she has to hurt him. What will Annie do?
Everything starts to change for young Annie. Her mom is pregnant, her Grandpa is now fragile and forgetful, and of course Max, more rude and even more moody than ever! And Annie, she suddenly starts to realize and understand the rhythms of life and how she fits with them with each step she takes. Heartbeat is a wonderful story that lets you explore the train of Annie's thoughts, emotions, and lifelong questions that she may never figure out.
I recommend this book for anyone-people of all ages-whether you're an adult or a young child. This question will keep you wondering just as it did me, "Why are we here on this earth?"

Heartbeat by Sharon Creech is written in poetry form. Footnotes give us more about the characters. The chapter's names give hints about what will happen in that chapter. Annie is the main character. The most important event is when Annie helps her mom take care of her grandfather. You should read this book because it will be good for kids to read in poem form, whether they think they like it or not. Parents can read this book to so they can practice reading poems.

Diagnoses for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have escalated dramatically over the past few years, and right along with these diagnoses have been prescriptions for Ritalin. Considered a family-saving wonder drug by many parents, Ritalin gives children who have trouble in school or difficulty socializing (due to poor impulse control) the ability to slow down, focus, and behave. Success stories abound, but not everyone is convinced.

Pediatrician and family therapist Lawrence H. Diller thinks it's time to reexamine the ADD "epidemic" and our responses to it, particularly our eagerness to use medication as a first strike. In Running on Ritalin, he poses many thoughtful questions: Are behavioral problems in over 15 percent of elementary school-age boys really the result of neurological aberrations? Is performance pressure so great that parents seek out ADD diagnoses (and Ritalin) to give their children an edge? Does it make sense to give so many kids daily doses of a drug with as much potential for abuse as speed? His answers are equally thoughtful. Refusing to polarize the issues (he prescribes Ritalin to some of his own patients), Diller explores the roles played by advocacy groups, drug companies, schools, and the government in creating the ADD mania, and makes a plea for calmer thinking about behavioral problems. He can only hope that adults take the time to sit down and pay close attention. --Rob Lightner

Book Description

In a book as provocative and newsworthy as Listening to Prozac and Driven to Distraction, a physician speaks out on America's epidemic level of diagnoses for attention deficit disorder, and on the drug that has become almost a symbol of our times: Ritalin.

In 1997 alone, nearly five million people in the United States were prescribed Ritalin--most of them young children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder.  Use of this drug, which is a stimulant related to amphetamine, has increased by 700 percent since 1990.  And this phenomenon appears to be uniquely American: 90 percent of the world's Ritalin is used here.  Is this a cause for alarm--or simply the case of an effective treatment meeting a newly discovered need? Important medical advance--or drug of abuse, as some critics claim?

Lawrence Diller has written the definitive book about this crucial debate--evenhanded, wide-ranging, and intimate in its knowledge of families, schools, and the pressures of our speeded-up society.  As a pediatrician and family therapist, he has evaluated hundreds of children, adolescents, and adults for ADD, and he offers crucial information and treatment options for anyone struggling with this problem.

Running on Ritalin also throws a spotlight on some of our most fundamental values and goals.  What does Ritalin say about the old conundrums of nature vs.  nurture, free will vs.  responsibility? Is ADD a disability that entitles us to special treatment? If our best is not good enough, can we find motivation and success in a pill? Is there still a place for childhood in the performance-driven America of the late nineties?

2 out of 5 stars Dr. Diller has no class.......2007-04-19

I saw him in person when my son was 5 and he blamed my son's issues on our fmaily dynamics. Turns out Dr. Diller was wrong and my son has ADHD, a language delay, and now learning disabilities. I wouldn't give him another dime. The book is not as helpful as finding a good psychiatrist. And Dr. Diller is a "developmental pediatrician" - I thought all pediatricians know about development? He is an over-priced regular pediatrician.

1 out of 5 stars Good book, but another endorsement for Ritalin.......2006-11-07

This book is well-planned and discusses drugging your child for various reasons, including the gamut from sluggishness to hyperactivity. I was convinced that the author actually intended to present a multi-modal plan for dealing with "the symptoms that are often known as ADD." That is, until I read that his idea of exercise is a little wrestling with Dad (no kidding) and that he is aware of no evidence that diet affects brain chemistry. Most of the symptoms of ADD read identically to those listed for hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Low blood sugar involves some lethargy, but is also characterized by angst, irritability as well as hyperactivity. Hypoglycemia is also a condition that is , ahem, not known to exist, but every physician knows how to administer the wrong test for it. Athletes call the exercise-induced hypoglycemic period "recovery." Alcoholics pour a drink. Smokers light up. Others just crash or drink coffee. Wow. And to think that Speed (oh, Ritalin) can help with that.

Homework burden cutting into your videogame time?
Can't sit in your chair during school?
Talk back to your parents?
Rough play with your pre-school friends?
Zone out and play with a toy too long ?
Stick out from the herd ?

After all of the well-written prose, this book is just an attempt to legitimize the increased prevalence of Ritalin. Modern psychiatry is about writing life-long prescriptions, and now they have a way to start as early as age five. Now, if only there were prescription for those pre-school years ...

5 out of 5 stars Living imbalance.......2005-11-24

There is no test for ADD. Competitiveness, underfunding for education, and the use of day care centers for young children may cause the increase in supposed instances of ADD and the prescribing of Ritalin to alleviate the symptoms. The issue of the validity of the diagnosis and the supposed cure is of some concern since the medicine also helps people focus who aren't ADD. That ADD is a neurological disorder is a reductionist view.

Unchecked ADD behavior is alienating to the student because so many negative responses from others are provoked. Such experiences may cause the person to drop out of school. Studies following individuals from childhood to adulthood show that medication alone doesn't alter outcomes. The multimodal approach is recommended by psychiatrists. It may be useful for the physician to work with the unhappy or angry child alone.

Ninety percent of the Ritalin worldwide is consumed in the United States. There is an American rejection of underperformance. Additional factors contributing to the rise in ADD diagnoses and use of Ritalin are the exigencies of the managed care system and an emerging culture of disability. The identification of the ADD disorder is socially defined notwithstanding the possible biological attributes.

The book cites the case histories of the author with a number of his patients serving to flesh out and delineate the concerns he raises that some of the trends highlighted may have negative consequences to the development of healthy personalities.

4 out of 5 stars A Balanced View.......2004-10-01

I started this book with some trepidation, expecting the author to be dead-set against Ritalin. This was not the case at all. He points out many positives about it, and frequently prescribes it to his own patients. He does examine (and question) the huge increase in the diagnosis of ADHD and the use of Ritalin, but in an insightful way. As the aunt of an ADHD child and a mother who is considering evaluation for her own daughter, I found the book very helpful. As we go through the process, I am already successfully using some of the behavioral techniques he discusses in the book.

I did feel that the book could have been quite a bit shorter, as the author seemed to repeat himself quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars A book that at least asks the tough questions.......2003-06-13

This books raises a lot of the questions I had but that I never see addressed elsewhere. It duscusses the fact that Ritalin does not cure ADD. It talks about the dramatic rise in ADD diagnoses and Ritalin prescriptions and discusses possible reasons. It also looks at some of the history and viewpoint of CHADD, the major support group for ADD. And it discusses how family environment and parenting techniques can play into a child's behavior. I think it also makes clear that Ritalin boosts everyone's performance, not just ADD kids or adults, and that the research stating that ADD results from faulty brain chemistry is less than proven.

At the same time, the book is also reassutring about the relative safety of Ritalin. And, every case study of his patients he cites seems to include at least a trial of Ritalin, so he is not at all flatly against the drug. He is in favor of looking at the bigger picture of the patient's life, not just writing out a prescription.

I think this book is definitely worth a read for anyone with a child who "has" ADD. And if you are someone who wonders why nobody seems to think it is any big deal to put your 6 year-old child on this highly-regulated stimulant drug, then you might feel the same relief I did in reading a book that at leasts asks questions, even if it doesn't have all the answers. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Why stress is good for us.......2007-10-04

I'm tired of self-improvement books that coddle the reader by focusing on relaxation and self-affirmation exercises, teaching us to shut out the trials of life instead of embracing and learning from them. This is not one of those books.

Instead this book teaches that stress is key to personal growth. Loehr defines a "Toughness Response" to pressure - biochemical, psychological, and behavioral - and instructs us on how to develop it. The author's sports performance background is readily apparent: the book, while easily readable, alternates between scientific discourse and a life coaching tone.

Loehr makes it clear that if we want to perform ideally under pressure, we must be willing to train for it. The essential message is that we can achieve the "Toughness Response" by carefully monitoring, understanding, and finally managing the ebb and flow of stress in our lives through discipline, training, healthy habits, and positive thinking. For those who are interested, Loehr even suggests a specific regimen in which readers take dozens of daily personal statistics from low and high pulse to productivity level to sleep quality to emotional state to exercise levels. But this book will still benefit those who are not willing to make that organizational commitment.

While it's common sense, I was refreshed by the reminders to strive for an ideal balance of challenge and rest and to make an effort to benefit from life's unexpected variety.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......2005-08-05

This is one of the best books I have read on positive (what the author calls "tough") thinking, especially when feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, etc. It has piqued my interest and I will be doing more research into sports mindset training to find out what I can learn and apply for myself. I found this book as helpful or even moreso than THE POWER OF FULL ENGAGEMENT, which he cowrote much later. It has many of the same themes, but more focus on how to be confident, tough, and relazed and having fun.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking!!!.......2002-04-13

Using competitive sports (particularly tennis) as a model, "Toughness Training for Life" defines toughness as 4 principles: flexibility, responsiveness, strength and resiliency which apply to everyday life and to a person's physical, mental, emotional and overall well-being. The overall effect one is looking for is creating balanced waves of expending and recovering energy and the avoidance of under- and over-training. There are some real world examples of out-of-balance lives (for example, overtraining physically, undertraining emotionally) and specific steps to correct the problems.

There are 2 other principles that I found particularly useful: 1) If you're having fun, you most likely are in-balance and operating at IPS; conversely, if the fun stops-pay attention and 2) Pain is merely a signal of an unmet need - interpret it correctly and respond appropriately and the pain goes away.

If you've ever heard the cliched wisdom about drinking plenty of water, getting enough rest, finding the silver lining in every cloud, etc. but wondered why or how it helps, "Toughness Training For Life" explains it thoroughly. Using a modified version of Maslow's pyramid, all aspects of toughness are covered, including specific sections on the physical, mental and emotional components plus special sections on the education system and on toughness for women.

Highly recommended! Also try; "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" (another paradigm of happiness); "Egoscue Method" (more on physical alignment); "The Bodies Many Cries for Water" (a very overlooked recovery strategy) and "Mastery" by George Leonard.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of theory, few specific tools.......2000-10-12

I picked this book up after reading an article about Loehr's program in Outside Magazine. Unfortunately, the article had more specific, day-to-day advice than this book does. Loehr's ideas are very interesting and ring true, but he spends a great deal of time justifying his theory and reviewing brain biochemistry and physiology experiments. Then he throws in some case studies and some vague recommendations - eat multiple small meals a day, target your heart rate during exercise, reframe your inner dialogue, etc. Based on the magazine article, I was expecting a program to help you identify your weaknesses when it comes to implementing these changes and structure a program around that. I was expecting a realistic look at why people fail to become tough and how to work around it. The book starts to do that, but never really follows through with specifics.

5 out of 5 stars Bible of Balance.......1999-11-24

We are taught through life that "we are strengthened by trials." That is not true. We don't grow stronger by adversity. We are made stronger through _healing_ from trials. The same applies to Nietzsche's popular sport/war chant "that which does not kill us makes us stronger." Anyone who has seen a homeless Vietnam Veteran knows that Nietzsche was wrong. "That which does not kill us, which we heal from, makes us stronger" is perhaps a better saying. WWII did not make us stronger. It made us dead, or at best, bitter. Yet a few were able to be strengthened by the combined process. What separated those few? What kept them alive, submissive to their captors, and able to transcend their adversity and use it to their advantage? This is the subject of Loehr's book.

How do we balance our stress and recovery cycles so that we maximize our growth potential?

This is one of my favorite books, because I, like everyone, am constantly seeking order and battling frustration...

He has other books along these lines, but this is the newest and most comprehensive.

1 out of 5 stars A Guidebook for Christian Parents.......2007-05-16

I agree 100% with the reviewer that said this book should be sub-titled 'A Guidebook for Christian Parents'. Personally, I don't appreciate his religious bent and I think it should be clearly stated that this is where he is coming from.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Rules Every Parent Must Know to Survive.......2005-08-18

Dr. Leman's book is a down-to-earth handbook for parents navigating the difficult waters of adolescence. He doesn't mince words, and he backs up his advice with studies and his own experience as a family counselor. I found his advice right on the mark for dealing with my 14-year-old as well as my 12-year-old, although they have very different personalities. I bought a copy for future reference after reading the library's copy and loaning it to several friends. Those library fines can really add up!

1 out of 5 stars adolescence isn't terminal.......2005-06-29

They were handing these books out for the parents at my old school so I decided to read it.
First of all, Kevin Leman seems to be a very conservitive republican. He says you should read your kids the Bible to show them that God wants them to wait until marrage for sex. This is not called "A Guidebook for Christian Parents," so I'm sure that people of many other religions are reading this book. Also, if kids want to have sex, parents telling them not to is not going to stop them. If you tell them just not to do it, they will go at it anyways without any protection.
In another part of the book, he says that a divorce can cause girls to sexually mature faster. What he is suggesting is to not get divorced. What he did not mention, however, was the effects that fighting parents can have on children.
He seems to think that all teenagers are ashamed of their parents and will not listen to them just because it is the parents that are telling them to do things. Can you get any more steroetypical? I'm sure if any teen saw their parents reading a book that all it does is describe teens they would be furious. This is because NOT ALL TEENS ARE THE SAME!!!! Just because we are under the age of 21 does not mean we all have a little conference and plan how we are all going to act the same way and make our parents miserable.
For the good of your children, do not buy this book. Remember they are individuals!!!! And just for the record, his "humor" is pathetic!
I know I am going to get negative feedback, and I understand because there are the arguments that I am only a teenager myself so I don't understand things about raising one. But I hope that you try to understand my views because, after all, this book is about people like me.

5 out of 5 stars Seriously Fun Advice!.......2007-09-12

Jill Conner Browne has a REAL voice that speaks volumes about love, friendship and living life "out loud". Buy one for yourself and one to lend to friends, better yet, it makes a great birthday gift!

5 out of 5 stars Not just For Women Only!.......2007-09-11

Since this is the 289th review posted here, I can't see much point in writing an actual review. So , here are some of my favorite bits:

The recipes! This was totally unexpected, and I only read them because she's such a good writer. And the names! "Fat Mama's Knock You Naked Margaritas"! " Come Back Sauce"! "Danger Pudding"! -- the latter prepared by boiling an unopened can of condensed milk.... "You shouldn't do any of this yourself, because you could be killed. Come by my house, and I'll make it for us. I'm very brave."

"What to Eat Before and After an Assignation

Well, "before" is a no-brainer; you can't eat a damn thing. If you do, your stomach will pooch out like you're twelve month's pregnant, and it will ruin the lines of your trashy lingerie...."

"Chapter 10, Men Who Signal Danger.
    Run away! Run Away!"

Chapter 11, Men Who May Need Killing. Which is where you'll find detailed instructions on what to do if you find a possum sleeping under your bed. At 2:30 AM.
"What would daddy do? He would know, without the slightest hesitation... Daddy picked a fine time to be dead for fifteen years..."

And I won't even try to describe the Houseguest's Dilemma: "...all the lights blazed on, and there stood her hosts, staring in bewildered disbelief at this grown woman squatting over and urinating into their very large mixing bowl."

This certainly isn't a "For Women Only" book -- indeed, it's as funny a book as I've read in quite awhile. You never know with humor, but if you like Florence King ("Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady"), definitely try Browne. And, if you've missed King, you're in for a treat there, too.

Not to be missed, if you're a fan of raunchy slapstick.

    Happy reading--
    Peter D. Tillman

This book is funny, but the recipes are wonderful. I laughed outloud as I read, but I couldn't wait to make some of this food. When I did make the food it was easy, reliable, and GOOD!! I have shared so many of these recipes already, and I get tons of compliments!

    Book Description

You have nothing to lose but your old PR's!

Attention Runners, Triathletes, Cyclists & Fitness buffs!

Do you suspect that your best race or sleekest body is in there somewhere, waiting for the right schedule, coach, or series of workouts to bring it out? The author agrees. He thinks most athletes and fitness buffs train incorrectly.

This book is the only one on the market that comes with a guarantee: Use the system for a month and if you're not running or training better than you ever thought possible, return it for a refund and an apology! The book even includes a chapter of case histories of runners who began using the program and within weeks started seeing amazing improvements. And not by running harder, but by using the heart monitor to ensure that their recovery days were run easy enough!

The author offers athlete/readers the following enticements:

    * Race and train better than you ever thought possible
    * Get fewer injuries and avoid overtraining
    * Train efficiently without feeling tired all the time
    * Learn to USE a monitor, not just wear one
    * Get out the door in 10 minutes, WITH A PLAN!
    * Adapt the monitor to YOUR training, not the other way around

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars His Methods Work.......2007-10-04

This book is great. For the person that said he had them running 17 miles the first week. First, if they would have read the book, he has a scratch program in the back of the book for true beginners. Second, your running ( actually probably walking)those miles at <70% your max heart rate if your just beginning to run. These is a great book. I have read and implemented his method into my marathon training program, and had not run in more than 5 years when I started. I have had no injuries, and about to run my first marathon. If you are patient the first month and read the book his method works.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Over-train.......2007-04-09

Runners will find this guide to managing your heart rate during workout especially helpful, but athletes of all kinds will find something useful.

3 out of 5 stars Serious runners' guide has lessons for all.......2007-02-07

Parker's message is that most runners over-train by following the standard advice to keep their heart-rate between 70-85% of maximum for their daily workouts. He explains first that the percentage should be based on the range between resting and absolute max heart-rate, not simply the max value. But his main point is that you should alternate easy and hard days - on the easy days, keep below 70%, and on the hard ones, above 85%. This allows the glycogen level to recover between hard runs, which the conventional method fails to do.
As a middle-aged layabout trying to fend of aging by jogging rather than a real runner, I found the book worked for me, increasing my endurance and even my pleasure in running.

2 out of 5 stars Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot.......2007-02-04

This book is for runners, as a walker it is of limited value.

3 out of 5 stars Book Geared for Runners.......2006-11-10

I ended up sending this book back because it is really geared more towards a runner. Not someone like me who walks mostly and lifts weights for more general health. I ended up sending this book back because it was a little too complicated for me. If you are someone who is looking for a book to help a beginner with a heart monitor, I wouldn't suggest this particular book.

I imagine it's a great resource for a runner though!

    Book Description

In these days of corporate scandal, there's a far more pervasive and serious problem going on right under our noses. It's a family takeover orchestrated by our kids. That's right - children are taking control of family units in record numbers. When a man and woman marry, says author Ed Young, they occupy the leadership roles in their relationship. But in some cases, as children enter the family arena, that begins to change. The kids slowly become the center of the family universe as parents relinquish control to them.In effect, the children become Kid CEO's and the parents become the support staff. As parents, we have charge of our children for only a short time. It's up to us to prepare them for life.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Kids CEO.......2004-09-17

Loved the pratical advice on how to raise children in a selfish world. The author comes to fresh conclusions that most child rearing books give. I plan on trying a few of the recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars There's hope for the family.......2004-09-10

Every parent needs to read this book! My wife and I have a two-year-old and have learned so much about how to raise our son on solid principles that work. And at the same time keep our marriage a priority in the home. Ed Young's words are right on the mark: children have taken over the home and parents have let them. Giving kids everything they want is not giving them the best in life. Among his practical advice is a challenge for every parent to have a regular date night with their spouse and to keep a set bedtime for their kids. If parents just did those two things, it would revolutionize families today.

      Book Description

In the late 1970s Ondaatje returned to his native island of Sri Lanka. As he records his journey through the drug-like heat and intoxicating fragrances of that "pendant off the ear of India, " Ondaatje simultaneously retraces the baroque mythology of his Dutch-Ceylonese family. An inspired travel narrative and family memoir by an exceptional writer.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Remembering Family.......2006-12-08

I read this book for a Canadian fiction class and really liked it. The language was so interesting and different from anything I had read before. It is a wonderful story about a wacky family. There are good times, bad times, funny stories, tragic stories, and just plain wacky events. It really makes you want to take a look into your own family and find out all of the "juicy" details. I really liked the book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting story.

3 out of 5 stars hit and miss........2006-10-24

fans of michael ondaatje's poetry will no doubt like this book; however, do to the hit and miss nature of each chapter, i doubt that this book would win him many new fans. an impressionistic collage of place & family members, this book is closer to the ethic of poetry, forsaking narrative structure for short pieces that jump here and there to paint a family in an exotic place and time. plenty of good prose, but lots of the pieces are too random and are just not interesting. worthwhile, but not highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Pictures of yesterday.......2004-03-08

Considering that this is in fact an autobiograpy, one can not judge it's contents. After all, you can not judge ones life, either you like it or not in a sense of discussing literature. But, what you can discuss is the manner in which that biography is written. Ondaatje present's life of his family trough generations who lived on Ceilon (Shri Lanka), in a series of random images, which are more like picture, than prose. Many times he stops to grasp certain individual and present his little history, his life, which than influenced the rest of the family in some perverse way. When reading this book, experienced reader will find such compositions that corresponds in that what crtics call 'modern', others will find interesting and compelling story, which never grows in boredom, with fluent narrative style that keeps ones eyes fixed on pages long after the lights went out.
Comparing the Ondaatje with other authors of the modern world,
Ondaatje lacks the one thing that he "must" have when presenting himself in a way he does. By focusing himself merely on a problems of his own, of a personal character in every (which, of course, includes this one)book, he voluntarily forgets that there is other life, other world going around him. When tending to write intelectual prose, one should, at least in one way, give some focus on that matter too.
But, when all this comes to conclusion, if you like (auto)biograhies - buy this one, if you don't, skip it. It's simple as that...

      5 out of 5 stars delicious.......2002-08-04

both the style and the subject of this novel are easy and enjoyable to absorb. mostly a memoir including some letters and poems. it has a great sense of humor and is full of passionate, and most importantly interesting accounts of the definatly NOT run of the mill family history Ondaatje has.

      5 out of 5 stars What a family!.......2002-03-19

This book was just so enjoyable and hilarious but yet so beautifully written. From the beginning till the end Ondaatje opens up to the reader (in a journal entry) this magical and beautiful world. Onddatje's adroitness to include the reader right there in the conversations he has with various family member will bring you to tears. His captivating sytle takes the reader back in time with him trhough such tear jerking and amusing experiences.

This memoir will give you a deatiled verbalization of each city and place in Ceylon, so that the reader has a clear picture of what it was like to actually be there. His simple structure of setting things up, will make you feel the temperature and jungle like atmosphere by his entailed descriptions.

Ondaatje reminds me of Stein in certain passages because of how he holds nothing back from the reader. It's as though he's sitting down and talking to you while showing photographs and stories of his exuberant and loud family.
