Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

It includes more than 13,000 entries in Spanish and in English.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Complete.......2006-11-05

This dictionary is well written and comprehensive. An excellent resource for judicial spanish/english translators.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but out of date and missing many key terms.......2006-05-27

Of the numerous Spanish <>English legal dictionaries I use regularly, this is consistently the one least likely to include the terms I need. I suspect it's partly because this is an abridged edition, and partly because the sources that the author(s) cite include very few publications that are even remotely recent. Another problem: the entries generally provide narrative explanations rather than functionally equivalent terms. The explanations are cogent, clear, interesting, and often establish differences in meaning between different countries. However, this approach is not helpful if you're a translator trying to figure out the best English-language equivalent for a Spanish legal term or vice versa.

2 out of 5 stars Diccionario Juridico not what I hoped for.......2006-05-10

As a US immigration lawyer, I was pretty disappointed with this dictionary. It had few of the terms I looked for.

4 out of 5 stars Great tool for translators.......2006-04-05

I am a translator and also and interpreter, and I have found that this is a great dictionary for my translations, althought I must say, that sometimes the explanations can be somewhat confusing, but I still think that is a very good dictionary in general. Just one thing.. I think the authors did miss a few words.

4 out of 5 stars Rough & Ready Translation.......2005-10-24

I am a prosecutor, and I needed a dictionary to help translate the basic legal terms that are necessary to explain a guilty plea to criminal defendants. For my purposes the dictionary has been helpful. The dictionary enables me to find some word that will be close enough to my intended meaning to enable the defendant to follow. It is a handsome hard cover volume.

However, it doesn't have the kind of detail that you might want to explain to clients of different cultural backgrounds the more subtle differences between legal expressions. As one somewhat trivial example that comes to mind, we use the word audiencia for hearing. This dictionary also has the word vista for hearing, but it gives no insight into the difference between the two words -- when you would want to use one rather than the other. So, I just use audiencia because that's what our local translators use, and I trust them.

For simple translations, this dictionary is a great value, and I am very happy to have it. I am not skilled enough in spanish to be able to explain subtle differences in meaning -- or for that matter to write a review in spanish, so I don't find the lack of detail to be a problem. If you want detail, you won't find it here.

Book Description

An icon (from the Greek word "eikon," "image") is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers
and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters--usually monks--followed prescribed models from iconographic
manuals.
The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on
common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. As with other volumes in the Guide to Imagery series, this book includes a wealth of color illustrations in which details are called out for discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Survey course.......2007-07-14

The Getty Museum's reputation for quality is upheld in this small format handbook. Chock full of reproductions, it includes obscure images.

The color quality shows egg tempera's true and intense hues on feel good low gloss paper.

Copy is like a short survey course-informative and addictive. This is a good reference book.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Value........2007-06-13

Good things: For the price, this book has a way more bang for the buck than most icon books. Look at the number of pages, and each of them has an icon. The paper is very nice, glossy and heavy. The icons are explained in depth, with indications of the meaings of each part, and a short history of the icon.

Nitpicks: I wish the book were a little larger, but then again I say that about all icon books. Also, I seriously wish someone would include Ethopian and Coptic and other Church icons in some of these books, especially one this size and this thorough. There were tons of the standard Byzantine/Greek/Russian icons, some of them redundant, which could have had some Syrian/Ethopian/Coptic/Arabic etc icons in there too. But these nitpicks aren't reason to not buy the book, or even deduct a star.

5 out of 5 stars Icons and Saint Of Eastern Orthodox Church.......2007-05-12

This is one of the best description of life sourrounding the main icon that I have seen. Usually the main icon is known but the small icons are seldom known or identified. This is my second copy that I've purchased for a friend who writes icons. My original copy is been held in captivity my another icon writer. Who knows, I may need to buy a third copy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative book.......2007-02-13

I was very happily surprised by the depth of information in this book. Literally every major detail of every icon is explained. The reader will see elaborate icons rendered for the royal doors of churches, as well as the standard portrait-sized images.

The book offers a wealth of knowledge to the student of art as well as to those who want to know more about the spiritual significance of icons.

An enjoyable and edifying history.

5 out of 5 stars A great value!.......2007-01-04

I bought this book because I am interested in icons and wanted more than the few images that are usually featured in books about icons. Well, this volume has HUNDREDS, all arranged by saints and persons of the church. It's a great value for the price. The images are clear and colorful and printed on glossy paper. There is a minimum of words in this book, which I liked because I wanted the images, but there is enough explanation to understand the context and the creation of the image. The book is a small and chunky paperback, and I can predict that I might break the spine if I use the book overmuch, but I recommend this book anyway because of the wealth of images. I am very happy with this book.

This is one of those books that you keep in the library as the perfect reference. The curious minded reader can browse these pages for hours. As the title indicates it is an Encyclopedic work set up in alphabetical order by name. Most entries have biographical information with note of the feast day. The twelve Appendices are a great addition and sort the entries in a range of catagories from Popes, US Martyrs, Mystics, etc. There is a Glossary of terms and a Calendar of Feast Days as well as an Alphabetical Index. Text is broken with the occational black and white engraving. A very comprehensive and complete work on the saints both famous and obscure as well as significant beati.

Book Description

The preeminent resource guide for more than twenty years, this one-of-a-kind book, now available in paperback, has been updated to include those recently canonized and beatified.

Since its original publication in 1980, John J. Delaney’s Dictionary of Saints (more than 200,000 copies sold) has become the leading reference book for the scholar and general reader alike. With more than five thousand biographies of the saints—from the well known to the obscure—this new edition brings to life the inspiring accomplishments of these men and women of God. The martyrs and the monks, the mystics and the virgins, the doctors and the peasants are all contained in this essential volume. To know the saints, how they thrived in their achievements, how they lived in destitution, is to meet a fascinating company of people whose actions have influenced and enriched the history of the world.

Reset in an easy-to use-format, it contains substantial listings for the more popular saints, and thumbnail sketches for those less well known. From Aaron to Zosimus, this modern dictionary has been updated with the entries for the newly canonized, including Italian mystic Padre Pio, Mexican Nahuatl Juan Diego, Polish Franciscan Maximilian Kolbe, and Americans Katharine Drexel and Rose Philippine Duchesne. It also contains a complete listing of feast days, an index of patron saints, and several other useful appendixes.

Funny how sometimes a book comes along and everything is easily explained. I was curious about Saint Christopher after seeing the movie: Crash.

I am a Southern Baptist and have no clue when it comes to Catholic practices. I had no idea that people actually carry statues of saints to give them comfort.

So after seeing the movie: Crash, I wondered just who Saint Christopher was. And this book gave me a detailed description of the kind and generous acts Christopher performed.

If you ever wondered why St. Patrick is so popular or which Saint is the basis for Santa Clause this book will enlighten you. Learn and Enjoy! ~J.R. Fitzgerald

Like a dictionary or encyclopedia, has a short paragraph about each of the Saints recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. Also contains a calendar listing of the saint's day. Very basic descriptions

4 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Saints.......2004-10-18

This book has a solid listing of all the saints, most of whom I've never heard of. There are several saints with the same name which is confusing to the novice, but the details are informative and help keep things in order. Obviously a lot of effort went into researching this book and for that the author is to be commended.

3 out of 5 stars A rush job??.......2004-10-05

In many ways, this is a very good dictionary. Lots and lots of saints, with average entries of c. 20-25 lines per saint. This dictionary doesn't have more errors than the average saints' guide, and less than some. (Farmer's Oxford Dictionary of Saints has the most scholarly and thorough coverage, but fewest saints; the Benedictines of Ramsgate's The Book of Saints has an enormous number of saints but with very brief entries AND NO INDEX LISTING SAINTS BY THEIR FEAST DAY.) What is truly annoying about Delaney's volume is the listing of saints by feast day---which is really the shoddiest thing I've seen in ages. There are dozens and dozens of errors, ranging from wrong date to listing the saint by a variant of name that doesn't actually appear in the text. It's very frustrating to use.

5 out of 5 stars Very insightful.......2007-04-11

This book has greatly improved my understanding of the symbolism employed St. Ephrem. It is an introductory book, not an advanced one, so if you are new to St. Ephrem, by all means give it a read.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry and wisdom.......2002-10-23

I've read this book twice, and have had the pleasure of introducing a number of people to the wonderful hymns of St. Ephrem. Here is an introduction to much more than the writings of an obscure ancient poet; the book is a primer in ancient Christian spirituality (perhaps just occasionally with some anachronistically modern "spirituality"; for that, maybe the book should get 4 1/2 stars). Great themes: paradox, e.g. God hidden and revealed in the Incarnation; the "two witnesses" of Scripture and nature; spirituality, sacrament, and symbolism; patterns of complementarity and contrast in the sacred scriptures; role of the intellect in the life of faith; theosis and exchange, etc. If you admire the writings of Dante, George MacDonald, Charles Williams or C. S. Lewis, you will find a true forbear of theirs here. British composer Sir John Tavener has drawn on Ephrem for texts of at least three of his compositions, including the superlative "Thunder Entered Her" of 1990. I included some of Ephrem's verse in a course and after that, students were coming by my office to tell about how moved by or interested in Ephrem, etc. they found themselves to be. I also recommend Brock's book of translations, HYMNS ON PARADISE. Buy both, and read them. They help Christians to contemplate the Mysteries.

Books with stories that you can leaf through, without reading linearly from cover to cover, are always fun, and for lovers of medieval art, Saints is one of the best. Lushly illustrated, and formatted somewhat like a travel guide, the mini-biographies summarize what is known about each saint. Representative art works are provided, accompanied by sidebars and annotations with arrows that point out key features. Saints in Art is a valuable resource for anyone wishing to decipher the symbology and iconography contained in the religious works, great and small.

5 out of 5 stars everything i wanted.......2005-10-13

this book is awesome! it has info on over 100 saints commonly found in art. stuff like name, time and place of earthly life, what they did, patronage, special devotions, connections to other saints, when they became saints and their feast days are easily found on the sidebar. there is a little biography and then a collection of maybe three paintings and an explanation of who is in the painting and what they are doing as well as the meanings of the objects they are pictured with. for instance, if i ever see a painting of a woman with her hair down pictured with a container of oil or ointment i will know it is mary magdalene. a t-shaped cane is an emblem of St. Anthony Abbot, etc. super useful saint painting decoder.

5 out of 5 stars Holy writ!.......2005-05-14

This title originally comes from the popular Dizionari dell'Arte series by Italian publishers Electa and we should be thankful that the Getty has taken on the task of translating these fabulous reference books into English. Saints in Art is an important source not only for the iconography and hagiography of the principal saints in art but on the great visual history of European painting (with an emphasis on Italian). Lavishly illustrated. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars All the names are here for your new baby.......2002-11-19

A very comprehensive book of all the saints names you want to know and choose for your new arrival. You will be able to see the many variations and what they did that made them a great saint worthy of their name.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Resource.......2002-03-26

Are you sick of pouring through the contemporary name books? Then pick up this treasure. Featuring more than 8,000 girls and boys names, the advantage to this resource is that it lists appropriate patron saints for most of the names, along with a very brief biography of such saints, the meaning of the name and includes the feast day for the patron.

For parents desiring to find Christian names for their children, this is an indispensible resource.

In addition to common Germanic, English, French, and Irish/Gaelic names, the book also features many African-American, Native American, and Arabic names as well.

You'll find such common names as Thomas, Anne, Susan, and David, as well as less common names such as Marva, Montana, LaShawna, and Moesha.

Where there is no appropriate patron saint for a given name, the book will examine the history of a name, break it down into parts, or find a patron that relates to the name's meaning so that very few names do not have a patron associated with them.

I recommend this book for any parent deciding on names for their children.

Book Description

Prior to his religious conversion, St. Francis of Assisi was a liar, thief, and virtual madman known for running naked in the streets. Teresa of Avila healed herself on her deathbed by praying to her patron saint. St. Augustine converted after a terrifying dream in which God beat him black and blue for his pagan beliefs.

These are just some of the colorful and riveting details that can be found in the Encyclopedia of Saints. This single-volume guide includes more than 400 entries that offer detailed biographical accounts of principal saints of the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Drawing on extensive research, the book explores their lives and religious journeys, mystical experiences, philosophies, and important influences. Appendixes include information on patron saints by topic, a calendar of feast days, beatified and canonized popes, an explanation of the canonization process, a glossary of terms, and a glossary of heresies.

Saints profiled include:
Blessed Andre Bessette, Anselm. Barnabas, Catherine of Sweden, Elizabeth Ann Seton, Fabian, Pope Gregory I, Hildegard of Bingen, John of the Cross, Lucy of Syracuse, Mark the Evangelist, Nicodemus, Rose of Lima, Simon Stylites, Thomas Aquinas, William of Norwich, Zita.

I HAVEN'T REALLY READ THIS BOOK COVER TO COVER-BUT IT IS WELL WRITTEN AND WELL ORGANIZED!!! IT'S ABOUT A LITTLE OVER ONE INCH THICK(419 PGS)-I HAVEN'T RESEARCHED ENOUGH TO KNOW IF EVERY SAINT IS COVERED BUT ABOUT 500 ARE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Book on Saints.......2006-02-17

I purchased this book as a gift for a friend and wound up buying a copy for myself as well. It's a great reference book with interesting, factual and easy-to-read backgrounds on hundreds of well known and many lesser known Saints. Each Saint gets about a page of intersting biographical information and and overview of their lives.

4 out of 5 stars Decent comprehensive look.......2005-04-09

I received this book as a gift when I converted to Catholicism several years ago. In recent days, I've read much more of this book than the occasional glance-through I originally had done.

The book offers little that cannot be found online for free, but it is nice to have a handy reference in book form. Just in case the conversation turns to "Who's the patron saint for greeting card makers?" (St. Valentine) - you can look it up, along with brief (often frustratingly too-brief) bios on the saints.

More than 1,300 saints are profiled in this most readable, extensive, and enlightening of references. Curious about the saint you're named after? Attending a feast day for a saint you never heard of? Want an obscure saint to include in your historical novel? Or merely desirous of the kind of feet-up-by-the-fire perusal that only a well-written reference text can provide? David Farmer's compilation of saints includes all English saints; all saints of whom there is or was a notable cult; important saints from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the rest of Europe; and recently canonized saints. Arranged alphabetically, the dictionary starts with Abbo of Fleury, ends with Zosimus of Syracuse, and includes Pelagia of Antioch, Crispina of Tagora, Cunegund the empress, and a wide assortment of other martyrs, popes, spiritual seers, and those, such as Crispin of Viterbo, who were canonized simply for their humble lives and Christian faith. There's also a wonderful appendix of the principal patronages of saints--telling, for example, who's the patron saint of healthy dogs (Hubert) and mad dogs (Sithney), plus an index of the main iconographical emblems of saints, another of places, and a calendar of feast days. --Stephanie Gold

Book Description

This is far more than a dry hagiographical account of the lives of saints. This entertaining and authoritative dictionary breathes life into its subjects and is as browsable as it is informative. Critically acclaimed in its many editions, the dictionary is now reissued into the rebranded best-selling Oxford Paperback Reference series. The entries are concise accounts of the lives, cults, and artistic associations of over 1,400 saints, from the famous to the obscure, the rich to the poor, and the academic to the uneducated. From all walks of life and from all periods of history, the wide varieties of personalities and achievements of the canonized are reflected. Featuring maps of pilgrimage sights in Europe and fully updated appendices, this remains the standard reference paperback in its field. Recently-added saints include the Martyrs of Korea, Vietnam, and the Spanish Civil War, Andrew of Crete, and Emily Rodat, a female hermit of the 7th century. There are also more Scottish and Irish saints, and ancient Welsh saints; more European saints from all centuries, as well as more saints from Eastern Europe; more recently canonized saints and female saints from the USA.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Endlessly fascinating.......2007-01-17

This book is an interesting and engrossing catalogue of saints, primarily from the British Isles. Far from exhibiting the "bias" of which other reviewers accuse it, that focus on British/Irish saints was the_intent_of the book. Although the major saints of the universal Church are included, this book fills a vacuum by concentrating on the saints of the British Isles, the majority of which are obscure and of purely local interest and devotion. In the lives of these forgotten saints, Mr. Farmer has dug deeply through the layers of history to give us a fascinating snapshot of British piety and devotion since the earliest times. Although the tone of this book is scholarly rather than devotional, and some of the early legends and beliefs tend to amuse rather than edify, on the whole the lives of these saints cannot but inspire the faithful.

5 out of 5 stars The Oxford Dictionary of Saints.......2006-06-16

A must for anyone who wishes to sort fact from fiction!

5 out of 5 stars solid scholarship, endless entertainment.......2006-02-03

The Oxford Dictionary of Saints will not disappoint you, no matter what your reasons are for buying it.

It's an excellent reference book. David Hugh Farmer has a real gift for summarizing large amounts of material without sacrificing either natural language or the particularity of the information being summarized. He's especially good at conveying the nuances of sources and their reliability.

Also: no matter what your religious and educational background may be, The Oxford Dictionary of Saints is one of the very best bathroom books ever printed: endlessly varied, always interesting. It's a trove of self-contained little stories.

4 out of 5 stars Oxford Dictionary of Saints.......2002-01-20

An excellent source for information on saints of the Roman Catholic Church and the Ortodox Church up through the Schism. It does not include saints of the Episcopal Church, but does include those popular saints such as Barbara and Christopher removed in the 1968-69 time frame. I use it in writing my monthly column for my parish newsletter.

4 out of 5 stars More than Lives.......2000-10-23

An entertaining and informative dictionary of saints that not only gives the lives of the saints but also a history of their folklore, veneration and relics. Farmer includes "popular" saints like St. Werner (who was never formally canonized), desanctified saints like Barbara, and a few saints of the Orthodox traditions. Appendices list patron saints and symbols associated with the saints. You will not find every saint in this work, but the ones you do find are described in rich detail. I bought this book for a narrow purpose and soon found myself reading it from cover to cover in bed. The only bothersome thing, for me, is Farmer's Anglophilia: he gives space to many obscure English and Irish saints while ignoring some key figures from other parts of the world, like St. Diego of Alcala (for whom San Diego is named). Nonetheless, it is a useful book for either reference or entertainment.
